Gas cycling is generally considered a much less efficient oil recovery mechanism than water flooding. HOWever, recoveries from some fields have been exceptionally high as a result of gas cycling. Recovery from the Pick-ton field, for example, was calculated to be 73.5 perceni of the stock-tank oil originally in place. In evaluating pressure maintenance projects, determining how much of the recovery is due to displacement by gas and determining how much is due to vaporization of the imrnohile oil in the flow path of the cycled gas is very difficrilt. Even though most of the oil is recovered by displacetr~ent, the success of a project may depend on the amount of oil vaporized. A limited number of experiments have heen performed with a rotating model oil reservoir that simulates gas cycling operations and allows a separation of the oil from, tile free gas flowing into the laboratory wellbore at reservoir conditions, thus revealing which is displaced oil and which is vaporized oil. It Iras been determined that the amount of varporizatio'n is .significant if proper conditions exist These experiments show that oil vaporization depends on pressure, temperature, volatility of the oil and amount of gas cycled. Increases in each of these conditions increase the volume of oil vaporized. Data from six experiments affecting vaporization are presented to illustrate reservoir condition that range from favorable to unfavorable. 111 these eaperitnenis recovery by vaporization ranged from 73.6 to 15.3 percent of /he immobile oil (oil not produced by gas displacerrlt). INTRODUCTION Between 1930 and 1950, gas cycling was a popular. oil recovery practice. especially for the deeper reservoirs. Later, with many case history-type studies published for both gas cycling and waterflooding, it was generally believed that waterflooding was far superior to gas cycling, even when gas cycling was conducted as a primary production procedure by complete pressure maintenance. A good example illustrating the advantage of water-flooding over gas cycling is given in a paper by Matthews' on the South Burbank unit where gas injection was followed by waterflooding. The author concluded in part that "Early application of water injection, without the intervening period of gas injection, would have recovered as much total oil as ultimately will be recovered by waterflooding following the gas injection, and total operating life would have been shortened". This appears to be a logical conclusion. However, it should not be applied to all fields. Pressure maintenance with gas in the Pickton field, as reported by McGraw and Lohec;' will result in a much larger percentage of oil recovery than was obtained in the South Burbank unit. The great success in the Pickton field resulted partly from vaporization of the immobile oil in the flow path of the cycled gas. The amount of vaporization is related to the following conditions: volatility of the oil as reflected by the APT gravity of the stock-tank oil; reservoir temperature; reservoir pressure during gas cycling; and the amount of gas cycled. Therefore, the U. S. Bureau of Mines is investigating these effects on vaporization in a research project using a model oil reservoir. Three different stock-tank oils having 22, 35 and 45" API gravities are being used as base stock to synthesize reservoir oils. Experiments are being performcd to determine vaporization at 100, 175 and 250F and at 1,100, 2,600 and 4,100 psia. This is a progress report showing the results from six experiments. Other Bureau of Mines reports"- concerning vaporization are listed. LABORATORY EQUIPMENT AND PROCEDURES The equipment ' consists of an internally chromium-plated steel tube packed with finely sifted Wilcox sand. The tube is approximately 44 in. long and has an ID of 13/4 in. The sand section contains approximately 570 ml of voids, has a porosity of 32 percent, and a permeability to air of 4.3 darcies. A unique feature of the laboratory reservoir (Fig. 1) permits the tube part to rotate at 1 rpm while the outlet and inlet heads are held stationary. The outlet end contains diametrically opposed windows to permit observatlon of the flowing fluids, and two valves, one on the top and the other at the bottom. Oil and free gas. when being produced simultaneously, can be separated by manipulating the two valves to keep a gas-oil interface in view through the windows. Thus, only gas is produced through the top valve and only oil flows through the bottom valve. The laboratory equipment was designed to study vaporization. Therefore, a uniform reservoir was made using dry sifted sand as opposcd to using a consolidated sand core with interstitial water. Furthermore. the reservoir was tilted to minimize fingering of gas. Current over-capacity in coal production provides assured and relatively low-cost supplies to coal importers. At the same time, it is of serious concern to coal producers who invested considerable sums in the expectation that overseas demand would continue to grow rapidly. This paper assesses the reserves available for export, the export facilities, the coal supplies which can be put through them, and the market prospects for the future. It assumes, rightly or wrongly, that there will be no major and prolonged disruptions in supply from any major sources of coal. COAL RESERVES FOR EXPORT Economically recoverable reserves in the non-communist world amount to about 470 billion tonnes. These are sufficient to sustain current production levels of 2 billion tonnes a year for 235 years.

Black Mountain, a polymetallic base metal mine located in the Northern Cape territory of South Africa has been blessed with high grade economic ore for many years. Now that the Broken Hill orebody is nearing the end of its life, a lower grade orebody (Swartberg) is being exploited to supplement production from Broken Hill. In addition, ore from stopes in the upper levels of the Broken Hill orebody is considerably tarnished (oxidized). As a natural result, the remaining ore contains a higher percentage of magnetite, pyrrhotite and pyrite than in earlier years. Bismuth, cadmium and cobalt also occur in the ore in higher quantities. The life of the mine has been lengthened with the discovery of further deeper-lying ore reserves extending from the Broken Hill orebody suitably called the Deeps section. However, to bridge the gap between development of the new reserve and the exhaustion of the old reserve, these lower grade and tarnished (oxidized) ores have to be treated. The mine has had reasonable success in identifying unfavourable or problematic ore types and stockpiling them separately to blend in small quantities with more favourable ore. Bench and plant scale tests have aided identification of the various ore types and significant improvements in flotation metallurgical results have been seen. Copper, lead and zinc metal occur as sulphides in the ore. The mill consists of a differential and sequential flotation process that extracts copper concentrate, lead concentrate and zinc concentrate respectively with silver metal recovered in the copper and lead concentrates. This paper describes the ore blending strategy employed at the mine to maximize the econo-metallurgical efficiency of the operation.

The principle regarding roof bolting were that: a) the loose and fragmented rocks were suspended from or clamped to more competent surrounding rock and b) generally, by clamping several layers of thin and laminated strata, a more competent monolithic beam is created.

T. M. Drown, South Bethlehem, Pa.: Mr. Thackray's paper shows in a striking way the high degree of rapidity and ac curacy exhibited by the chemists of our steel-works in ordinary everyday practice. That determinations made in an hour should present only slight differences in the third place of deci male is certainly matter for surprise and congratulation. This remarkable result has been due, perhaps, in part, to a remark able cause. The managers of works, ignorant of all the diffi culties of the laboratory, have demanded "the impossible " of their chemists—and the chemists have done it! Andrew A. Blair, Philadelphia, Pa.: Mr. Thackray's paper is extremely interesting, especially in its bearing on the question of a standard method for the rapid determination of phosphorus in the laboratories of steel-works. Before discussing the re sults in general, I desire to explain the results obtained by me under method A'. This is the method which I have used in the work of the sub-committee on Methods of the Interna tional Steel Standards Committee. It may be described briefly as follows: Solution in nitric acid; oxidation of carbonaceous matter by permanganate; precipitation of phosphoric acid by molybdate solution; reduction of molybdic acid in the reductor, and titra tion by permanganate. This method was used apparently by only three chemists, Dr. Dudley, Mr. Crowell, and myself. In determining phosphorus by this method, among the most essential points to be considered are the ratio of iron to molyb dic acid, or the reducing action of zinc on molybdic acid as compared to its reducing action on iron, and the ratio of molyb dic acid to phosphorus in the ammonium phospho-molybdate obtained by precipitation from the solution of the steel. In regard to the first point, the usually accepted ratio is 1 to 0.90756, or, as it is roughly stated, 0.9076, which is based on the assumed reduction of the molybdic acid to Mo12019,. This

BORN a Chicagoan, on Aug;. 31, I879. Oscar Johnson lived in that city until young manhood. As a youth delivering newspapers he set his sight on the l university of Chicago and at sixteen years of age he began working summer vacations in the foundry of the Pullman Company. Misfortune came to his family during the summer of 1898 when tuberculosis took his only sister and brother. His mother, apprehensive of Oscar's health, urged him to try the West at least for awhile. So late summer found Oscar in Salt Lake City, employed by the Trent Engineering & Machinery Co. At that time it was busy building equipment for use in the war with Spain. Though he did not know it then, Oscar war was laying the groundwork for his present membership on the Mining Equipment Industry Advisory Committee of the W.P.B., a post which keeps him commuting between Denver and Washington.

During the past 20 years, FKC-Lake Shore, located in southern Indiana, has been working with Contitech, the German conveyor company, to push vertical conveyor technology to new depths and open up additional opportunities for underground mine owners. Historically, the underground mining industry has largely been unable to realize the benefits of these efficient systems due to the design limitations in maximum depth and capacity. Until recently, only relatively shallow depth mines with low production rates have been a ?t for a vertical conveyor system. This, however, is changing with technical advancements in the Pocketlift system. With each milestone, a new vertical conveyor record is set for depth and capacity. For instance, in 2002, FKC-Lake Shore set one such record with the installation of a Pocketlift system at a mine in the Illinois coal basin with a lift height of 273 m (896 ft) and a production rate of 1.8 kt/h (2,000 stph). Although it was unthinkable at that time, today?s vertical conveyors are capable of reaching lift heights up to 700 m (2,300 ft) with an average production rate of 450 t/h (500 stph). These new lift heights and production rates are opening the technology to more potential mine owners and shifting the way people look at moving material in the future.

Mineral aggregate, the most widely used mineral resource globally, has attracted little academic or public interest. Of all mining developments, the aggregate resource is seldom factored into resource management decisions. This lack of recognition to the strategic aggregate resource has significant economic, environmental, and social implications. Impact to the economics, the environment, and the community coincide with the key elements of the United Nations concept of ?sustainable development?. To build on the concept, the mining sector contracted the International Institute for Environment and Development to assess how mining activity contributes to sustainability. As a result, a useful assessment process was developed by the Mining, Minerals and Sustainable Development (MMSD) Task Group entitled ?Seven Questions to Sustainability: How to Assess the Contribution of Mining and Mineral Activities.? In Alberta, recent opposition to mineral resource development by community residents offers an opportunity to employ the MMSD?s assessment procedure. The public opposition to the mining activity was addressed through a stakeholder planning process initiated by the municipal council of Sturgeon County, Alberta. As a result the Calahoo/Villeneuve Area Structure Plan (CASP) was formulated and adopted. To measure the effectiveness of the CASP planning process in terms of sustainability, this paper applies the MMSD?s Seven Question assessment to the Calahoo/Villeneuve Area Structure Plan.

The three gas-producing "pools" discussed in this paper are in Sweet-water County, southwest Wyoming, and Moffat, County, northwest Colorado. The newly developed Bateman Flotation Machine has proven its versatility in roughing and cleaning flotation circuits. This mechanical flotation machine has the dual performance capability of suspending solids and dispersing air at relatively low power inputs without compromising these two important fundamentals. This new development has been successfully marketed to a wide cross section of concentrator mineral processes. The mechanical design of the flotation mechanism has been optimised to reduce operational costs and to lower manufacturing costs. Production process environments were utilised for verification of the scale-up of each cell volume size rated mechanism. These thorough investigations produced performance data which could be accurately quoted. This paper is a historical account of the Bateman Flotation Machine. Technical details of the development are covered with descriptions of the operational applications.

The presence of calcium ion in iron ore pulps causes heterocoagulation of montmrillonite on hematite leading to indiscriminate dispersion. Two methods were investigated to control the adverse effect of montmorillonite: chemical method using such complexing agents as EDTA and sodium tripolyphosphate, and mechanical method involving ultrasonic treatment. Their roles in controlling the adverse effect were investigated by zeta potential measurements, starch adsorption tests, and flocculation and selective flocculation tests.

"In September 2011, Menard Oceania (MO) was engaged by Mac Mahon John Holland Joint Venture (MJHJV) to provide ground improvement solution for the $34bn Ichthys LNG development. With close to 400,000m2 of mangrove swampland set to be reclaimed and improved, this project was a great opportunity to showcase the technical, commercial and environmental benefits that Dynamic Replacement (DR) ground Improvement technique can provide. The ground improvement works involved complete design and construction for the Ichthys LNG site located at Blaydin Point on a low lying peninsula in Darwin Harbour. Dynamic replacement and stone columns technique were selected to treat intertidal mangrove mud to achieve required bearing strength, stability and limit settlement to an acceptable levels. The site is underlain by a 3m to 5m thick layer of highly organic mangrove muds with very soft shear strength ranging from 0kPa to 12kPa at depth. The site is exposed to daily sea water level tidal variations of up to 8m, which created significant constructability constraints and slope instability risks. This paper presents the design philosophy, the process involved in the selection of the construction methods, the site constraints encountered during the works and a review of the results achieved, quality control and post constructions performance.INTRODUCTIONInpex Browse, Ltd (Inpex) and its partner Total are developing the Ichthys gas field to pipe gas to onshore facilities at Blaydin Point on the south side of East Arm in Darwin Harbour. The proposed LNG plant consists of gas receiving facilities, 2 x 4.2Mtpa nominal capacity LNG trains, LPG and condensate production facilities, product storage and export facilities, a module offload facility (MOF), a flare pad (FP) and associated off plot facilities.The proposed on-shore facilities are located on extremely soft intertidal mangrove muds, therefore an appropriate ground improvement was required to achieve required strength and stability of site works and limit long term settlement to an acceptable level.Various ground improvement techniques were studied to select the most suitable for the ground conditions and site constraints encountered at the Blaydin point site. Dynamic replacement technique was selected for onshore section to improve soft mangrove mud to depths of 5.5m and Stone Columns (SC) technique was selected for MOF off-shore section to improve intertidal deposits to a depth of 2.5m.This paper presents DR design and construction works performed between December 2012 and August 2013 at Flare Pad Area."

The paper presents previously unpublished results derived from an unique interaction moitoring program conducted in the Sydney Coalfield of Nova Scotia. An abandoned, sealed longwall gateroad was re-entered and instrumented prior to extracting a longwall face 140 m below it. Instrumentation included piezometers connected to a constant head tank to monitor subsidence, and horizontally mounted extensometers to measure strains associated with subsidence. Survey levelling data was also collected. The monitoring results have allowed a number of significant conclusions to be drawn, all of which were either unanticipated or contradict current mainstream thinking. Firstly, interaction subsidence was less than anticipated. Secondly, the effects of rate of face advance on the development of the subsidence profile are evident. Thirdly, compressive strains are shown to remain in the subsided strata. Finally, strata response to undermining was almost immediate. The impact of these findings on the extraction of longwall panels beneath flooded workings in the Sydney Coalfield are discussed.

A concept of plate-tectonic controls for the formation of seafloor massive sulfide (SMS) deposits in back-arc settings was established by Franklin et al. (2005). According to Franklin et al. (2005), a consequence of extension and rifting is subsidence, thinning of the crust, and the rise of hot, athenospheric mantle into the base of the crust. Underplating of the crust by mafic magmas results in low-pressure partial melting of the hydrated crust at a <15-km depth, and the generation of felsic anhydrous melts. The rapid ascent of hot felsic melts, along with mantle-derived mafic melts, results in bimodal volcanism that characterizes rift and volcanogenic massive sulfide deposits (VMS) environments. The rapid and focused advection of the magmatic heat within the rift to the near-surface environment which are required to sustain vigorous long-lived VMS hydrothermal systems. Faults within rift environments may also allow seawater to penetrate into subvolcanic intrusions and mix with magmatically generated metalliferous fluid or allow a direct magmatic contribution from shallow crustal level (3–12 km) magma chambers (Franklin et al., 2005, and references therein). In addition, the caldera-forming processes are favorable for the formation of VMS deposits and the focused high heat flow and cross- stratal structural permeability that is restricted in time and space to caldera development provides an explanation for the clustering of VMS deposits and their restriction to specific time-stratigraphic intervals and structures in the evolution of submarine central volcanic complexes (Franklin et al., 2005, and references therein). The concept is persuasive, although it is based on a series of logically constructed reviews mainly focused on ancient on-land deposits.

This paper presents experimental data for the magnetic field produced by thermoelectric currents around uncracked hard-alpha inclusions in a Ti?6Al?4V specimen under external thermal excitation for different nitrogen content ranging from 1.6% to 5.9%. According to our preliminary results, the magnetic flux density measurements were found to be rather sensitive to changes in nitrogen content with the exception of the intrinsic material background magnetic signal that affected deeply the detectability of inclusions and imperfections in non-contacting thermoelectric measurements. Hopefully, these preliminary results can help identify a non-destructive test method that can detect material inclusions with a level of nitrogen that could be detrimental to Ti?6Al?4V alloy components.
