WELL known to every metallurgist is the fact that different production schedules will profoundly affect the character of annealed metal strip. Yet the number of conditions [ ] that may be wrought by different combinations of rolling and annealing schedules is so myriad that despite the continual research that is being applied to this subject, the complete picture is not yet known. Copper, like all other metals, during the process of rolling or annealing, develops certain crystallographic configurations which should not be dismissed as being too impractical, for the crystallographic condition existing within the metal is a principal influence upon both the external mechanical properties and the behavior of the material [ ] when it is subjected to such operations as bending, flanging, drawing, and so forth. This report documents the status of a laser-based underground guidance system for tracking and controlling the movements of underground mobile mining equipment. This research is part of a multiple project effort at the U.S. Bureau of Mines to increase mine safety and efficiency by developing technology for computer-assisted mining. Guidance systems, which can track and control the movements of underground mining equipment, are essential during computer-assisted mining operations. A continuous mining machine at the Bureau's surface test facility served as the test-bed for initial development and experimentation of this guidance system. Subsequently, a continuous mining machine in an underground mine served as the platform for in-mine experimentation The first section of this report includes details of the laser sensors, communication network, and computer hardware. The next section includes experimental results, which show the system capable of accurately tracking and controlling the tram maneuvers of a continuous miner underground. The final section discusses conclusions and recommendations.

PREPARATION of mechanically loaded coal in mines where seams contain considerable impurities is a subject that requires careful consideration before machines are installed, unless provision is made at the tipple for its preparation. Conditions vary a great deal in the different seams, so much so that a mechanical loader may be unsuccessful in one seam and yet the same machine may make good in another where conditions are different. The effect of impurities in the coal seam on mechanical loading will also vary according to the thickness of the seam. In thin seams impurities will be more difficult to remove than from thick seams, as will appear later. For the past several years the New River Co. has done considerable experimenting with loading equipment and during this process has changed from one machine to another.

Flow and fracture are admittedly complicated phenomena of which we are yet only partially masters. There is not even nni-.persal agreement as to the details of the language best adapted merely to describe the phenomena, to say nothing of any theory. Certain points of view, however, are widely held, and there are certain general expectations as to what sort of procedures will prove permissible. A complete description of any situation involving fracture would demand a complete history of all the variables in the control of the experimenter. The experimenter endeavors so to choose his independent variables that they are adequate to determine completely the situation in the sense that when an experiment is repeated on the same initial material and with the independent variables running through the same sequence, all the other measurable properties of the system will also run through the same course. It is, I think, the universal conviction that when we are dealing with phenomena of flow and fracture, the most important of the necessary variables are the external forces acting on the various parts of the body; when the force history repeats, with certain obvious restrictions such as that temperature must be constant and non-mechanical forces, such as magnetic field, must be small enough to be ineffective, then the history of all measurable properties will repeat; in particular the alteration of geometrical shape due to flow will run through the same course, and when fracture comes, the character of the fracture will be reproduced. Complete mastery of merely the descriptive aspects of flow and fracture would demand the ability to predict the entire course of flow and complete characterization of the final fracture for every possible combination of forces, varying in time in all possible ways, when applied to bodies of all possible shapes. This full situation is obviously of prohibitive complexity. The first stage in reduction to manageable simplicity is to resolve the total situation into the sum of contributions made by small elements. Our thesis is that if each of the elements is adequately characterized, the behavior of the whole system is fixed. The element is usually taken of a simple geometrical shape, suggested by the mathematics best adapted to the particular situation. The forces acting across the faces of the elements are ultimately determined by the forces acting across the free faces of the whole system. The detailed process of finding the precise forces on the faces of all the elements in terms of the external forces involves the use of a special mathematical invention, the stress, a constructional quantity consisting of six components. The stress at any point in the body is determined by both the external force system and by the physical properties of the body at all points; quite different stresses prevail at the interior of bodies of the same shape under the same external forces in the elastic and plastic ranges. "THE WORLD'S coal resources represent the largest component of non-renewable energy resources. Coal is now regaining Its position following a temporary decline, particularly in North America during a period of about a quarter of a century. This period provided the opportunity to improve both surface and underground mechanization, thereby increasing the productivity and improving conditions for humans in the mines. Similarly, in preparation, improved cleaning of coal from various impurities including sulphur was achieved, to meet the more demanding requirements for coking coal. Progress was also made in combustion, particularly related to the reduction of pollution. Canada participated in most of these developments, despite the country's strong commitment of the use of hydrocarbons during this period. _Bearing in mind the vastness of this land (3.85 million sq. miles) by comparison with countries like U.S.A., U.S.S.R., and China, Canada's coal resources estimated to date are not large and they are scattered. The original evaluation of 1913 estimated the ""reserves"" from seams over one foot in thickness and a limiting depth of 4,000 ft at 1.2 trillion metric tons. D:. ~.R. MacKay, in his evaluation for the 1946 Royal Commission on the coal industry, known as the Carroll Commission, reduced the ""reserves"" to 99 billion short tons. The increased knowledge now available would indicate that the 1913 estimated was too liberal and the 1946 estimate too conservative but both were closer to a resource than to a reserve designation. Some adjustments of Dr. MacKay's estimates were made in 1970 by B.A. Latour of the Geological Survey of Canada and L.P. Chrismas of Energy, Mines and Resources Canada (EMR). In the last decade the Alberta Energy Resources Conservation Board has developed its own methods of evaluating coal resources and reserves. A methodical approach of exploration and evaluation was carried out by Saskatchewan jointly with the federal government of the lignite resources of Southern Saskatchewan. A similar joint program is in progress in Nova Scotia. Meanwhile, the industry itself carried on an extensive exploration program on the outcrops of promising projects in the Inner Foothills belt of Alberta and British Columbia in preparation for surface mining on a very large scale, with some development of hydraulic mines. All these activities have been reflected in the increase of the country's resources and reserves, which now fortunately are separately defined. In 1979 EMR issued Report E.R. 79/9(1>; the data were developed in 1978 and provided to the World Energy Conference Organization<2>. In 1980 the World Coal Study (Wocol), an international group that included Canada carried out a study which updated the W.E.C. data, indicating some reduction of the 1978 figures; quantities were reported in million metric tons of coal equivalent (C.E.)*(Jl."

Drilling accuracy is the foundation to any successful blast operation. Even the best blasting practices cannot overcome poor drilling and still obtain desired results. Inaccuracies in boreholes can result in flyrock, increased vibration, uneven floor, and other undesired effects. As depth increases, variation in actual burden and spacing is expected even if collars are located precisely. Problems arise when this deviation reaches a point where it adversely affects the function of the blast design. Not only can unsafe conditions such as insufficient burden at the face develop, but poor fragmentation can compound adverse effects. As with any troubleshooting, problems cannot truly be fixed if they cannot be measured. As a result, significant work has been done in the past on this subject. Currently, there are both cheap and expensive methods used to quantify deviation for a given borehole. However, implementation of these techniques is limited. In general production blasts, little is known about the variance in designed versus true borehole geometry. This is especially true if the blaster does not see telltale signs of drilling deviation. However, losses in blast performance may exist and provide an opportunity to obtain better fragmentation and reduce fines. As drill and blast operations strive for better optimization, greater focus is being placed on drilling accuracy and solutions to this problem. The following paper details the use of several current methods for deviation measurement in order to help prevent compromises of safety and improve overall blast performance.

In order to recover the chromium resource in chromium-containing vanadium extraction residue, a promising method is to prepare ferrochromium with the residue. The synthetic residue has been reduced under 1300, 1350 and 1400 °C at the reduction time of 1, 2 and 3 h respectively. The reduced samples have been smelted and separated by an induction furnace. The contents of chromium and iron in metallic phase have been determined by an inductively-coupled plasma spectrometer. The results indicate that chromium iron carbide (Cr, Fe)3C7 is the intermediate phase and titanium oxides have been reduced during the reduction process. While the sample has been reduced under 1400 °C for 3 h, metallic phase becomes the dominate phase and reduction reactions almost complete. Moreover, the chromium content in the metal phase reaches 10.19%.

The main deposits of gold-sulfide ores of Russia are characterized as refractory raw material with the non-uniform finely-interspersed sulfide mineralization, submicron gold, the low gold content (3-5 ppm) and non-uniform distribution of the gold associated with pyrite and arsenopyrite. These ores show low indicators of extraction of gold and silver at cyanidation. Flotation is one of the basic technological procedures of processing of gold sulfide ores however simultaneous presence of pyrite and arsenopyrite and lack of effective methods of their selection constrains application possibility of flotation schemes because of rigid requirements to flotation concentrates under the arsenic content and practically excludes smelting of pyrite concentrate. The main losses of precious metals at flotation technologically are concentrated in thin classes (up to 15 %) demonstrating an inefficiency of standard reagent modes. For an estimation of expediency and possibility of application of selective flotation of pyrite and arsenopyrite a scientific substantiation of the mechanism and criteria of selection of gold-bearing ferrous sulfides of various material structure is developed and for difficultly divided pairs of sulfides with close technological properties the new selective reagents providing effective extraction of gold from hard-to-beneficiate ores are designed. The original technique for modifying surface composition of natural sulfides by nano-sized Au is worked out and the mechanism of selective adsorption of new reagents ? oxypropyl ester of diethyl-dithiocarbamatic acid (OPDTC) and oak bark extract (OBE) on Au-bearing sulfide minerals is revealed. Formation of almost insoluble OPDTC-Au compounds is defined by methods of scanning electronic microscopy (SEM) and UV-spectroscopy. Application of developed reagent modes using new reagents have been tested in laboratory conditions at flotation gold-sulfide ores samples and collective concentrate probes providing high extraction of gold and improved quality of the concentrate (less than 2 % As). The function of advertising is communication. Viewing the advertisements of mineral suppliers exposes the reader to a broad spectrum of purposes: announcements of new products, availability and supply, departmental services, company image, etc. It is the advertiser&apos;s hope that the message being conveyed is the same message being perceived by the viewer. To maximize this probability, the advertiser at least must carefully construct precise copy, identify the target audience and select the appropriate advertising medium. A truly successful and efficient ad, however, also must accurately reflect a product&apos;s life cycle, i.e., the rise and fall in demand for a product. Buggy whips and radio tubes are classic examples of items formerly in high demand. Industrial minerals are similarly affected by occurrences of product life cycles.

"The mining industry is taking advantage of the increased performance resulting from the use of variable speed A C drives for large motors. This technology provides increased efficiency under the variable speed and torque requirements of such drives as mine hoists, conveyors, and air moving equipment. The technology does introduce voltage spikes on the voltage wave form that stress the insulation system to a greater degree than would occur with a constant voltage source. These voltage spikes must be considered in the design of the insulation system used for these motors.BackgroundHistorically the insulation systems for large AC motors were designed to withstand with reasonable life the voltage stresses of a 60 Hz constant sinusoidal voltage. One of the design tests is a voltage endurance test that requires the application of a 60 Hz voltage from conductor to ground equal to four to five times normal and establishing a time to failure. These higher than normal voltages accelerate the normal aging process by causing extensive partial discharge activity (corona) within the insulation system and the time to failure is a relative indication of insulation life.In addition to the voltage endurance test at 60 Hz, the individual coils are subjected to a surge voltage test to establish the withstand capability of the turn to turn insulation under switching surge conditions. The surge voltage is a fast rise time, 0.2 microsecond to crest value, voltage spike that can be caused by a circuit breaker or contactor closing operation. These voltage spikes can have a crest value of greater than 3.5 times the normal line to ground crest voltage of the normal 60 Hz power supply. The standard withstand test value is thus 3.5 times normal line to ground voltage. Because the voltage surges or spikes occur mainly during start and stop switching conditions, voltage endurance under these conditions has not been a major factor in insulation system design."

For many major mining projects the time frame from initial planning to production can be measured in terms of decades. Hecla&apos;s Silver Shaft project, which is scheduled to go into production by the end of this year and includes a complete surface facility, shaft with an ultimate depth of 2,348 meters (7,700 feet), complete ore pass and loading pocket system, and 610 meters (2,000 feet) of development drifting and stope preparation, was initially concieved in the Fall of 1979. This duration of a mere four years from conceptual engineering to production is a testimonial to what can be accomplished when a progressive mining company and an innovative contractor work together as a team rather than developing into two warring camps as often happens.

THERE are sufficient arguments and evidence to indicate that boron should be adsorbed to existing austenite grain boundaries during the austen-itizing treatment. Accordingly, it is possible that boron contributes to the hardenability of heat-treatable steels by the reduction of the interf acial energy of austenite grain boundaries, at which sites are nucleated heterogeneously the decomposition products of austenite. Such a reduction in interfacial energy would reduce the total energy that can be borrowed in these heterogeneous nudeation processes and thus retard the initiation of transformation. A mathematical model has been developed to evaluate the viscosities of melts at high temperatures. The viscous flow in liquid is described by the equation, {n = Aexp(AG*/RT)} based on the absolute reaction rate theory. The Gibbs energy of activation,{ AG* } is considered to be a function of the temperature as well as the composition of the melt. The model has been applied successfully to various metallic and slag systems from unary to quaternary. On the basis of this model, a relationship has been suggested to relate the Gibbs activation energy of viscosity to the Gibbs energy of mixing in binary metallic melts. The viscosities predicted from available thermodynamic data in the case of a number of binary metallic systems using this correlation show satisfactory agreement with the reported experimental values.

Titanium sponge, which is almost pure titanium, is extremely ductile and not easily processed into titanium powder. One method of producing powder is the hydride-dehydride (HDH) process, where titanium sponge is hydrided to form brittle titanium hydride (TiH2). Titanium hydride is easily milled to produce powder and is then dehydrided to form Ti powder. In this work, titanium hydride powder obtained from titanium sponge was used as a starting material for blending and mechanical alloying with elemental powders. Firstly, titanium hydride powder was blended with aluminium elemental powder to produce a homogenized powder, which was then compacted and sintered to produce powder metallurgy compacts. Secondly, titanium hydride powder was mechanically alloyed with aluminium elemental powder and then compacted. The mechanically alloyed powder was characterized in terms of particle size distribution, morphology and microstructure. In both blending and mechanical alloying, the green compacts were characterized by assessing the green density, while the sintered compacts were characterized by their sintered density, microstructure, and hardness. The two processes have resulted in the formation of TiA13 intermetallic compound. It was established that by simple mixing and homogenizing, titanium hydride can be used as a starting material to produce powder metallurgy components in which porosity is a benefit rather than a problem, much akin to metallic foams. From the products obtained in the TiHz-Al system, it appears that titanium hydride can be used as a precursor in mechanical alloying. However, the possible formation of complex hydrides may introduce detrimental properties, and needs to be further investigated. For the production of non-porous components, it would be advisable to dehydrogenate the TiH2 powder before milling i.e. producing titanium powder by the hydride-dehydride (HDH) method. O uso de tratamentos de superfície proporciona melhoria das propriedades tribológicas dos materiais, possibilitando a utilização de materiais comuns, de menor custo e com alta tenacidade, porem menos duros, em condições que exigem alto desempenho da região de superfície. Os tratamentos termoquímicos podem aumentar o desempenho da superfície de forma mais simples e com menor custo quando comparado a processos de deposição de filmes finos. Neste trabalho foram realizados tratamentos termoquímicos de boretação, nitretação sólida e boretação multicomponente em aço AISI 1045 com o objetivo de melhorar o comportamento tribológico. O tratamento de boretação multicomponente consistiu de boretação seguido de nitretação, ambos realizados por via sólida. Foram realizados ensaios de desgaste por deslizamento do tipo pino-sobre-disco com contra corpo de WCCo. Os resultados mostraram o melhor desempenho das amostras apenas boretadas.

Mining of molybdenum at Questa, New Mexico has been accomplished by block cave methods since August, 1983. As caving progresses, a periodic geologic evaluation is made of the rock-types present in finger raises on the Grizzly Level of the mine. The production maturity of the cave can be monitored by relating this data to geologic cross-sections through the ore body. The draw point mapping program is a simple and effective tool that is used in making draw control decisions at Questa.
