TO determine the optimum inside dimension of an airshaft, it is necessary to strike the proper balance between the cost of power for air friction and turbulence losses within the airshaft, on the one hand, and the cost of sinking the airshaft, on the other. An airshaft larger than necessary is extravagant because the increased amortization rate exceeds the reduction in power cost. Conversely, an airshaft smaller than is needed wastes more power than can be justified by the corresponding reduction in amortization rate. The airshaft power is a function of the air volume Q cu. ft. per min. and the air-pressure drop p in. water gauge across the airshaft. † The airshaft pressure drop is calculated by the formula: R X l X O X Q2 P= 5-2 X A3 wherein R is the air-friction coefficient for the portion of the airshaft 1 ft. deep, 0 ft. in perimeter and A sq. ft. in area, when passing an air volume of Q cu. ft. per minute. The mining industry has long recognized the value of dispatch systems in open pit mines as they reduce load and haul costs. Over the years, researchers have proposed many dispatch systems with various limitations and advantages. The simplest dispatch algorithms are the so called 1-truck-for-N-shovels dispatch strategy. These algorithms are limited by the fact that their objective functions do not consider all the objectives of a mine and cannot be applied to all possible truck-shovel configurations. They are also myopic in nature. However, they are simple and computationally efficient and do not require occasional updates of the upper stage problem as required in multi-stage dispatch algorithms. In this work, an agent-based truck dispatch algorithm that conceptualizes trucks as intelligent agents that make autonomous dispatching decisions to maximize their utility is proposed. The advantages of this algorithm includes utility functions that encapsulate all of management’s objectives and agent’s with broad situational awareness. They are also more suitable for autonomous trucks. We evaluate the new algorithm against a simple 1-truck-for-N-shovels dispatch strategies using discrete event simulation. The simulation results show that the new utility function has significant advantages over 1-truck-for-N-shovels inspired utility functions. Future work will incorporate adaptive behavior into the model via reinforcement learning algorithm. INTRODUCTION In an attempt to optimize truck shovel operations in open pit mines in order to reduce the cost of haulage operation, which according to (Alarie and Gamache, 2002) is estimated to be about 50-60% of the total cost of mining, several effective and efficient strategies have been developed. Optimizing truck haulage systems in an open pit mine is one of the greatest challenges of mining engineering and has been the subject of many research projects. It is important that haulage systems are designed to be efficient, in order to minimise haulage cost, improve profitability and increase the total mine value. Although optimizing the number of trucks required in the operation of open pit mines can help reduce the cost, an effective and efficient truck dispatching system add value by ensuring that the available trucks are used efficiently. With truck dispatching systems, the trucks are normally dispatched between the crusher and dumping station (e.g. waste dumps and stockpiles), and the shovels in order to maximize the total output, obtain grades targets, reduce fuel consumptions and other objectives. Truck dispatching, which can have one or more objectives, is typically subjected to certain operational constraints such as truck and shovel capacities, empty and loaded trucks speed, among others. The problems associated with truck dispatching was first mentioned by Dantzig and Ramser (1959) after they made an attempt to determine the optimum routes of a fleet of delivery trucks between bulk terminals and a service stations. The problem occurs in several industrial systems besides mining (Alarie and Gamache, 2002; Gendreau et al., 2006; Rego and Roucariol, 1995). The dispatching problem, also referred in literature as the vehicle routing problem, has seen a number of modifications and extensions with Bertsimas and Ryzin (1991) presenting a dynamic and stochastic vehicle routing problem, and Ralphs et al. (2003) also adding to the original concept, the concept of vehicle capacity routing.

Recent fatal injuries occurring during pillar retreat coal mining call for better identification of the hazards and recognition of risks. Ground control hazards associated with room-and-pillar retreat mining tend to intensify with depth, requiring extra precautions in the form of additional controls. In many locations these activities are further complicated by local complexities often associated with unique or novel circumstances, such as over-mining or under-mining. One technique recently studied by NIOSH, Major Hazard Risk Assessment (MHRA), may help mine operators to mitigate the risks associated with pillar recovery operations. The approach was trialed at two underground coal mines in southern West Virginia that are currently practicing pillar recovery. The first step in the MHRA process involved reviewing the segments or parts of the pillar extraction mining system and identifying associated hazards and threats to the operation. Some of the high risk hazards at these two sites included: ? Rock fall during pillar extraction covers equipment and injury occurs during recovery operations, ? Rock fall above the roof bolt horizon, potentially injuring ? workers and/or requiring recovery action, ? Rib fall under deep cover, potentially injuring workers, and; ? Strata instabilities associated with subsidence of the interburden due to simultaneously mining two seams in close vertical proximity to one another. The mines? risk assessment teams then considered each threat individually in order to systematically identify potential unwanted events. The top unwanted events were examined individually using structured risk analysis tools. The output from the process includes a list of priority existing controls for monitoring and auditing, and a second list of potential new controls. These controls consisted of: Examples of best practices, ? Enhanced communication, ? Implementing standard operating procedures (SOP), ? Protocols for emergency response actions, ? Effective layouts, ? Efficient monitoring, and; ? Successful audits. This paper documents the process as it unfolded at the two mines, and analyzes the strengths and weaknesses of the MHRA technique as it applies to pillar recovery operations. This work was part of a larger NIOSH research project. NIOSH was responsible for: 1) facilitating the risk assessment process known as Major Hazard Risk Assessment (MHRA), 2) documenting the risk assessment process, and 3) providing mine management with a written draft summary of the risk assessment process. The results of the risk assessment represent the thoughts and opinions of the individual risk assessment teams and should in no way be construed as an endorsement of the risk assessment output by NIOSH or the University of Pittsburgh.

This paper discusses the effect of grinding media composition, mineral type and slurry environment on the wear rate of various grinding media (balls). Sufficient wear data have been obtained and correlated with the modes of wear determined from examination of the ball surfaces using scanning electron microscopy. Five modes of wear have been identified to be operative under certain slurry conditions for the various ball compositions studied.

INTRODUCTION The flotation of minerals from their ores in flotation cells involves understanding many chemical and physical processes ranging from electronic events in the bulk mineral and in the mineral surface regime. molecular events at interfaces, the statics and dynamics of thinning and rupture of microscopic to molecular intefacial films, the fluid mechanics of bubble- particle events, the dynamics of air-water-solid colloid states in a flotation machine, etc. etc. D.W. Fuerstenau, whom we honour in this symposium has made unique contributions to many of these diverse physico-chemical and technological sub-processes. The present paper is concerned with a number of observations of the behaviour of minerals in flotation cells and the surface science of some mineral sulfide-water systems. We do not intend to be comprehensive in our analysis, but rather to highlight the challenges that face the scientific masochist who chooses to understand "froth flotationn. In what follows, emphasis is placed quite deliberately on technologically relevant, dynamic or realistic flotation processes i.e. the recovery in a froth of a given sulfide mineral particle of a given size and history from synthetic or actual ores in a flotation cell. The Musaimeer pump station and outfall project located in Doha Qatar, was designed to collect and manage ground and stormwater and then discharge the treated waters offshore. The project constructed a long outfall tunnel using an EPB TBM with segmental lining, each tunnel ring being 1.35 m in length with an internal diameter of 3.7 m.. The diffuser structure was a 6-arm structure, measuring 294m by 40 m connected to a central manifold in turn connected to the TBM constructed tunnel via a riser shaft drilled from an off-shore barge. This technical paper will discuss the planning, methodology and construction practices employed to connect the TBM tunnel to the diffuser structure 10.2 km offshore.

Method of tunnel excavation is generally classified such as full-face excavation, bench-cut excavation, diaphragm with center pillar excavation, center drift advancing excavation and so on. These excavation methods should be selected properly in terms of ground condition, the area of tunnel section, the arrangement of construction. Center drift advancing excavation method in mountain tunnel construction, is often applied under quite weak ground condition, prior to the main tunnel widening excavation. Recently, the advancing drift is for the excavation of extreme larger section in main tunnel to confirm the stability of face. In addition, we make advancing deformation occur in drift when the construction was done in poor ground like squeezing and swelling ground, and the force occurred in main tunnel was expected to reduce by the effect of ‘dodging’ for support structure. Mechanical relation between drift and main tunnel has been mainly grasped on past experiences in Japan. However, the characteristic of tunnel enlargement was partially discussed by using the three dimensional analysis and the result was grasped by past experiences on the basis of each tunnel construction. It is considered that the natural ground stress is normally released as the advance displacement, but it was released after the main tunnel widening, causing a displacement and deformation increase. Up to now, the construction practice has shown the reduced displacement during the main tunnel widening excavation by the drift, and the numerical analysis agreed with above observation. However, there is no report found that the displacement and deformation at the time of widening excavation of the main tunnel become larger in case of a drift application. In Kyusyu area, western part of Japan, the northern part of Yoshinomoto tunnel was applied an advancing bench-cutting method for a center drift for the purpose of obtaining the geological information for support selection of the main tunnel in widening excavation. The shape of center drift was a perfect circle with a diameter of 4.0 m or 6.0 m and the same temporary support regardless of the geological situation. As a result, the displacement and deformation of the main tunnel after widening excavation were larger than the section where the center drift was not applied. Furthermore, the displacement and deformation of the main tunnel after its widening excavation was considered larger in the section where the cross-section of the center drift with 4.0 m diameter was applied than one with 6.0 m. Therefore, the center drift with a high rigidity support structure had the effect of suppressing the advancing deformation prior to the main tunnel widening excavation.

The primary objective of the structural geology portion of the Kennecott Copper Corporation-U. S. Bureau of Mines Pit Slope Stability Study was to determine the attitude, geometry, and spatial distribution of geologic structures of the west wall of the Kimbley Pit for use in designing a maximum stable slope for the pit. A corollary objective was to develop and refine techniques for collecting and analyzing geologic structural data with emphasis on numerical methods that could be integrated with other aspects of pit design. Surface mapping techniques used were a modification of conventional joint set mapping and a detailed linear sampling method. For subsurface investigations both oriented core and a borehole camera were used. It was determined that the major faults in the area were favorably oriented for mining a steep stable slope. The jointing or natural fracturing, although complex, was not random in attitude and consisted of several persistent fracture sets and a number of secondary sets. The attitude of the persistent fracture sets was favorable for steeper slope angles, and these attitudes were used in the design considerations. There was no significant difference between the attitude of the fracture sets determined from the former and new slope face.

The economic future of the Palmer Goldfield lies with both the gold mining and the tourist industries. An equitable solution to the competition between the two involves putting a dollar value on the historical evidence there for our Australian heritage.On 23 October 1986 the Queensland Government gazetted the Palmer River Reserves R16 of 16 200 hectares, in recognition of the competing land uses emerging in the region. The intention is that historically significant gold mining sites and relics will be preserved in situ with provision for continued gold exploration and mining.This paper explores and explains the administrative process of achieving a set of Management Guidelines for Rl6 within the Queensland political milieu. The result of that process is the achievement of some of the highest preservation standards in Australia, prohibiting surface disturbance of defined Category 1 sites, and no mining proposal has yet been refused approval.The Palmer Goldfield R16 experience is a major step in achieving a co-ordinated approach to both current mining and preservation of Queensland's mining heritage.

Soda ash, an essential raw material for major industries, such as the glass, chemicals, soap and detergents, pulp and paper, mining and water treatment industries, is traditionally produced by chemical and thermal treatment of trona ore. The treatment processes for trona ore are not only chemically expensive but also energy intensive. Hence, the production of a high-purity trona concentrate at a lower energy and operating cost is of considerable interest to the trona industry. In this study, we describe a possible two-stage process for concentrating trona ore, involving dry magnetic separation followed by flotation, to remove insoluble impurities from the trona ore. The results showed that a trona concentrate of 91.7% purity with a recovery 91.1% can be obtained by two-stage magnetic separation, which could be further improved to 98.1% purity at a recovery of 83.8% by subsequent flotation of the non-magnetic trona product. The purity of trona concentrate is limited by the particle size and impurity content of the trona ore. The operating parameters for magnetic separation and flotation have been identified to obtain an acceptable quality concentrate.

A água utilizada para refrigerar grandes equipamentos de produção, tais como Alto fornos, Fornos do Laminador de Tiras a Quente, Trocadores de Calor das Laminações de Tiras a Frio é originada de diversas torres de resfriamento da Usina, denominadas CBR´s (Casas de Bomba de Refrigeração). A água refrigerada necessita de tratamento químico para proteger os equipamentos de corrosão, deposição e crescimento microbiológico. Este tratamento químico usualmente na CSN é obtido por uma empresa contratada fornecedora de produtos químicos e serviços nestes sistemas. Dentre os serviços destacam-se as análises físico químicas, monitoramento automático das dosagens, avaliação diária dos tratamentos, etc. Recentemente, em Agosto de 2014 houve o início do novo contrato deste tratamento nas nossas CBR´s, mudando-se o fornecedor, os produtos e a equipe de atuação nestes sistemas. Este trabalho visa descrever como foi realizada esta mudança, as dificuldades enfrentadas inicialmente e os ganhos obtidos com esta alteração do tratamento. Destacamos os ganhos no monitoramento em certos sistemas que anteriormente não era realizado, como nos Staves do Alto Forno 3 e os ganhos financeiros em relação ao tratamento.

Carbonate rocks are widespread throughout Ontario and provide raw material for more uses than perhaps any other rock type. The principal carbonate rocks that are used by industry in Ontario are Paleozoic era limestone and dolostone. Limestone is a sedimentary rock that is composed mainly of the mineral calcite (CaCO,) while dolostone, also a sedimentary rock, is composed mostly of dolomite [CaMg (CO,),l. The majority of the province's limestone and dolostone extraction occurs from Paleozoic era rocks located in southern Ontario. Calcite and dolomite are also found in Precambrian marbles, calcite veins and carbonatites, however, utilization of these rocks by industry has been less common. Calcite and dolomite-rich rocks are utilized for a wide variety of uses including raw materials for cement and lime manufacture, chemical and metallurgical stone, fillers and construction aggregates (Derry, Michener, Booth and Wahl and OGS 1989a). For some uses chemical and physical requirements are very important. In the manufacture of glass, for instance, the chemical requirements of source materials are very important and very stringent. In other uses physical criteria such as whiteness may be more important. Although carbonate rocks are quite plentiful within the province, deposits that contain high concentrations of calcite or dolomite are somewhat limited. For that reason, this paper focuses on deposits that are known to, or may contain, a high percentage of calcite and/or dolomite. The paper emphasizes potential sedimentary limestone and dolostone resources, as these are the carbonate rocks most commonly utilized by industry in Ontario.

This paper describes of processing tests of 8 flotation concentrates containing precious and base metals by pressure oxidation (POX) method. Concentrates 1 and 2 were gold-copper concentrates. Zinc and silver were by-products in these concentrates. These concentrates were processed by POX with following cyanidation of POX solid residues, copper solvent extraction and zinc carbonate precipitation. The recoveries of gold, copper, silver and zinc from these concentrate were 98, 99, 30 and 99%, respectively. Concentrates 3 and 4 were lead-zinc concentrates. Silver was by-product in concentrate 3. Gold, silver and copper were by-products in concentrate 4. Concentrate 3 was processed by POX with following reduction smelting of POX cakes for primary lead recovery and zinc carbonate precipitation from POX solution. The recoveries of lead and silver into ingot were 96 and 98%, respectively. The recovery of zinc was 99%. Concentrate 4 was processed by POX with following zinc carbonate precipitation and reduction smelting of POX cakes. Copper was precipitated from the POX solution using sodium sulphide prior zinc precipitation. The recovery of zinc into carbonate concentrate was 99%. The recoveries of lead, gold and silver into lead bullion were 95, 99 and 98% respectively. The recovery of copper into sulphide concentrate was 99%. Concentrate 5 was gold-pyrite concentrate, and concentrates 6-8 were double refractory gold-arsenopyrite concentrates. Silver was by-product in these concentrates. These concentrates processed by POX and CIL. The recovery of gold from concentrate 5 was 98%, and from concentrates 6-8 was 85-90. Low gold recovery from concentrates 6-8 was associated with preg-robbing factor. The recovery of silver from gold-sulphide concentrates did not exceed 10-20%. The low silver recovery was associated with argentojarosite formation that is resistant to cyanidation. The flowsheets for complex processing of precious and base metals sulphide flotation concentrates based on this test work results were proposed.

O presente trabalho estudou a evolução microestrutural durante o recozimento no campo intercrítico de um aço baixo carbono com micro-adição de nióbio e molibdênio, laminado a frio, destinado a indústria automobilística, sendo este material da classe dos aços bifásicos. Com o intuito de verificar se os parâmetros utilizados no processo de fabricação (laminação a quente e a frio em função de uma determinada composição química) foram definidos de forma eficaz para obtenção da microestrutura esperada para um material “Dual Phase”. Os estudos foram suportados pelas análises da evolução microestrutural durante o processo de recozimento em escala laboratorial e análise dilatométrica, com o objetivo de determinar a faixa de temperatura no tratamento de recozimento em que as melhores propriedades foram atingidas. As caracterizações microestruturais e mecânicas foram avaliadas por Microscopia Óptica, Microscopia Eletrônica de Varredura (MEV) e ensaios de dureza Vickers.

The Deep Mill Level Zone (DMLZ) is the fourth panel cave mine in the East Ertsberg Skarn System, (EESS) which lies 500 m below the producing Deep Ore Zone (DOZ) mine and up to 1,700 m below the surface. The interaction between the DMLZ and DOZ is occurring as the DMLZ cave grows vertically toward the DOZ footprint. During this process, a rapid change in the global mine system stress is anticipated. This change is forecasted to drive substantial changes in the magnitude and direction of principal stresses in the DMLZ and DOZ mines at PT Freeport Indonesia. These changes will bring the mine system closer to the ultimate capacity of the excavations and can result in significant impacts to mine stability if not managed. Critical to this management, is understanding cave growth and locations, as well as how these changes will impact stress conditions.

Os aços 1Cr-Mo-V forjados são largamente utilizados em rotores de turbinas a vapor, e o seu desempenho em condições de fluência vem sendo melhorado por tecnologias de fabricação. Sendo assim, os fatores metalúrgicos que afetam o comportamento em fluência dessa classe de material vem sendo estudados. O objetivo deste trabalho foi a avaliar as diferenças na microestrutura e nas propriedades mecânicas, a temperatura ambiente, entre amostras de aço 1Cr-Mo-V fundidas em forno elétrico aberto e amostras que posteriormente refundidas no forno a arco elétrico a vácuo (VAR). As amostras foram forjadas a quente e tratadas termicamente em mesmas condições. Para a avaliação das diferenças, foram comparadas as microestruturas nas duas condições e feitas análises de inclusões através de microscopia ótica e microscopia eletrônica de varredura. Foram realizados ensaios de dureza e de tração a temperatura ambiente. Os resultados mostraram que a refusão foi eficiente na redução do teor de alguns elementos deletérios e na redução do tamanho e do número de inclusões, sulfetos de manganês e silicatos de manganês, além de contribuir para uma distribuição mais homogênea tanto das inclusões como da microestrutura bainítica apresentada. A research effort sponsored by the Department of Energy (DOE) and several steel producers, is investigating the benefits of coating steelcasting nozzles with various materials. Coatings were applied to casting simulation nozzles made from industrial tundish nozzles (primarily of magnesia) and industrial submerged entry nozzles (SEN's) (primarily of alumina-graphite) in order to extend casting time prior to nozzle clogging. Nozzles were coated by air plasma spray (APS) using a 9M series APS system from Sulzer-Metco. The ability of these coatings to provide protection from clogging was evaluated using a steel casting simulation. Substrate-coating compatibility was characterized using optical and SEM microscopy.

THE manufacture of charcoal in kilns was declared many years ago, after a series of experiments made in poorly constructed furnaces, to be unprofitable, and the subject is dismissed by most writers with the remark that in order to use the method economically the products of distillation, both liquid and gaseous, must be collected. It is asserted with truth that the number of kilns required for a large production of iron would be so great that it is doubtful whether any works would be justified in making the necessary outlay for their construction, but it can also be asserted with equal truth that for any such production in a given locality the use of charcoal as fuel would be equally unjustifiable. It appears to have been forgotten that there were other manufactures besides iron in which large amounts of charcoal were used, but these consumers seem to have been guided entirely by the results of the experiments of the iron men, who necessarily made the largest quantity of it. Some authors speak in a doubtful way of the quality of the charcoal produced, and a few concede that with great care good charcoal can be made in kilns, but that most of the workmen do not like kiln charcoal. This is the real secret of the opposition to this method of manufacture. Most of these objections were written when charcoal was the most important fuel used by the iron manufacturer, and when what was a large production of iron for several furnaces was less than that produced by a single modern one, in localities where other fuels can be had. Almost all that has been written on the subject related to the use of the fuel for the manufacture of iron in the blast furnace, where very peculiar properties are required, and where the quantity produced is limited by the height of the furnace, and this in turn by the crushing resistance of the charcoal. A large production was, therefore, only possible when the best and hardest woods were used. Of all these objections there is not a single one which is not equally applicable to any method of charcoal manufacture, whether it be meilers, pits, or furnaces.
