The results of prospecting operations involving geological data and a large number of geochemical determinations of the metal content of soil samples are plotted and evaluated by computer. Anomalous areas are identified in each type of environment by selecting probability or population boundary values from frequency distributions. The anomalies are plotted to permit correlation with geographical or geological features. Ranking of prospecting targets is made using geographic pattern, geology, absolute value and metal ratios. Three short case histories are presented.

[INTRODUCTION] The significance of gamma exposure to uranium miners has been recognized only in the last few years. Most ore deposits which have been underground mined, were 1% or less U308. Full-time mining of this grade ore can result in exposure exceeding 1 Rem per year. Several companies in Saskatchewan are planning to mine recently discovered ore bodies which contain ore pods in excess of 10% U308. The purpose of this paper is to present dose data which can be used to estimate gamma exposure from high-grade ore deposits, and to present mining techniques which will minimize miner exposure. [Dose Estimates] When one has a point source of radiation, the conventional laws of isotropic emission and the fall of dose with square of the distance, make dose calculations relatively easy. However, if one has an area source of infinite thickness, the assumption must be made that a uniform gamma flux is being emitted from all faces of the source (Figure 1). Dose from gamma emission would fall off only due to air attenuation up to such a distance at which the source can be considered to be a point source (usually 10 times the largest dimension of the source). For short distances, such as to the cab of ore-moving equipment, the dose reduction would be negligible. Assumptions: 1) Radium and gamma-emitting daughters are in secular equilibrium with uranium. 2) All gamma radiation is emitted from radium and its daughters. 3) Average gamma energy of 0.8 MeV. 4) Uranium ore has a linear attenuation coefficient of 0.212 cm-1, similar to that of Si02(sand). 5) Uranium ore density of 3.0 gm/cm3. 6) One curie of radium emits 6.84 x 1010 photon/sec(l). 7) One percent uranium ore contains 1 x 10-8 Ci/cm3 of radium. 8) Each MeV of 0.8 MeV photon results in a dose of 2.10[ ]10-3 mRem/hr. per MeV/cm2 -sec. 1) 9) Minimum ore depth 100 cm. 10) Linear attenuation coefficient instant for radium gamma of 0.374 cm -1 [ ] The photon flux from a radioactive slab is computed as follows: [Flux = photon/cm3 3(1) 2u S] [where, us is the linear absorption coefficient of s the source (uranium ore).] Thus, 1% uranium ore, in the form of an infinite slab, emits 1613 photon/cm2-sec, which results in a dose rate of 2.71 mRem/hr. Valley Camp No. 3 mine was the scene of an experimental shortwall introduced in 1973 in an attempt to improve the recovery from the Pittsburgh coalbed in the Ohio Valley area where adverse ground conditions have imposed partial extraction methods with only 40 to 55 percent recovery of the valuable resource. The Bureau of Mines, under a cooperative agreement with Valley Camp Coal Co., monitored ground pressures and caving in the shortwall section in an effort to determine whether the roof strata, notably the limestone main roof, will cave to the extent that roof pressures at the face are relieved and whether the powered roof supports can sustain the roof load. The Bureau's efforts included mapping of clay veins, instrumentation of chain pillars and shortwall panels with encapsulated pressure cells, recording hydraulic pressures in the legs of the shortwall chocks, and core drilling underground and from the :surface. The experimental shortwall was a qualified success. Recovery increased 5.4 percent compared with partial extraction. Pressures in chain pillars and the abutment zone were not excessive. Hydraulic pressures in the chock legs did not approach the yielding pressure. Apparently, the limestone strata caved and the roof pressure at the face was relieved.

Classifiers that are used to separate granular materials into a coarse and a fine stream, are considered. Fundamental Equations are presented which apply to all, such Classifiers and all feed size distributions. The practical, real Classifier is compared quantitatively with the perfect. Classifier. A Formula is introduced for the Real Classifier Selectivity, that defines what portion of each particle size is sent to the coarse outlet duct. This selectivity function is characterized by three Parameters, one of which (b) is a numerical measure of the sharpness of classification. A new dimensionless variable (J) appears in Equations and Graphs for recirculating load, product size distribution and specific surface in the classified product. This variable combines the effects of sharpness of separation, Classifier setting and fineness of a Rosin-Rammler Type feed to the Classifier. Classifier efficiency is defined, based on Specific Surface.

The Clearwater Deposit, a small occurrence of massive-sulphide mineralization enclosed in an envelope of disseminated-sulphide mineralization, was discovered as a result of an aeroelectromagnetic survey in New Brunswick in 1955. Subsequently, additional flights were made over the deposit and various ground follow-up methods were employed to ascertain the nature of their response. All methods proved to be capable of indicating the occurrence with varying degrees of precision. This paper is a presentation and a discussion of the magnetic and electromagnetic data, both airborne and ground, and the self-potential data obtained over this deposit. The attention of Canadian mining exploration companies was initially focussed on New Brunswick by the discovery, in 1953, of the Brunswick ore body. Ground electromagnetic surveys were of considerable assistance in locating and developing this deposit. In the following year, 1954, the Heath Steele base-metal deposits were discovered by employing an airborne electromagnetic device and ground electromagnetic surveys to follow-up the airborne indications. These discoveries demonstrated clearly that both airborne and ground electromagnetic techniques were applicable for locating the near-surface deposits of massive sulphides present in this region. Airborne electromagnetic equipment became available on a contract basis through Aeromagnetic Surveys Limited early in 1955 and was used extensively thereafter throughout a large portion of northern New Brunswick. It was as a result of one of these surveys with Aeromagnetic Surveys Limited equipment in the summer of 1955 that the Clearwater Deposit was detected. The airborne anomaly was located on the ground by means of an electromagnetic survey using a Swedish Slingram unit. During 1956, the region was investigated more thoroughly- in the hope that other sulphide bodies might be located. Airborne electromagnetic coverage was extended and the Clearwater Deposit itself was used as a testing ground for the various methods and types of equipment currently in use in New Brunswick. In this paper com prative data are presented for the airborne magnetic, airborne electromagnetic, ground magnetic and ground electromagnetic surveys over this deposit. The ground electromagnetic instruments used were the McPhar vertical-loop unit and the Slingram and Boliden horizontal-loop units. Self-potential surveys were carried out with a McPhar unit. From the geophysical point of view, all ground electrical methods employed indicated the presence and the extent of the massive-sulphide mineralization with a good degree of accuracy. With gold first discovered at Carrick in 1864, exploration and mining on the Carrick Goldfield in Central Otago, New Zealand, has now been ongoing for more than 130 years. Recorded historical hard rock production from up to 52 different mining claims from 1864 to about 1921 is 24,047 ounces (oz) of gold.   Since 1980 Amoco Minerals New Zealand Limited, CRA Exploration Pty. Limited, Amax Gold Mines New Zealand Limited and Summit Gold (New Zealand) Limited have conducted modem systematic exploration campaigns targeted at locating shear controlled gold bearing quartz lodes and stockwork deposits. More than NZ $1million has been spent by these companies on aerial photography, geological mapping, stream sediment surveys, soil and rock chip geochemistry as well as reverse circulation (RC) percussion and diamond drilling.   RC drilling by Summit Resources in 1997 has identified a 1,500 m long zone of low-grade gold mineralisation at Lower Carrick, with an average grade of 1.00 g/t Au over a 14 m average thickness. This gold mineralisation, hosted within a low angle shear zone, has analogies with the Hyde-Macraes Shear Zone in eastern Otago. Recent exploration and drilling at Carrick has revealed the potential to discover large (>0.5 million ounce (Moz)) low-grade bulk shear controlled quartz vein and stockwork gold deposits similar to those now being mined at Macraes.

R301 is a clad aluminum alloy, composed of a core of a duralumin-type alloy clad with a magnesium silicide alloy. It differs from other well-known clad alloys in that the cladding and the core respond to the same heat-treatments. and therefore the cladding contributes appreciably to the mechanical properties of the material. In Table I are reported the compositions of the core and cladding alloy for the material used for the experiments. This fact is well known and many investigations have been conducted to determine the features of this diffusion. Most of those investigations cover materials clad with pure aluminum; the present investigation covers a material clad with an alloy. Since the cladding thickness on R~OI varies with the gauge, as shown in Table 2, several gauges were investigated. Material and Procedure he material used was sheet of the following gauges: o.o2~, 0.040, 0.064, 0.102, 0.170 Cut in pieces approximately 3 by 5 in., it was in the cold-rolled state and was soaked for increasing times at the following temperatures: glo°F., 940°F., 970°F. A Lindberg cyclone furnace was used for the experiments. The procedure was as follows: The furnace was started empty with controlling pyrometer set at the determined temperature. After the furnace had reached that temperature, it was run for some 20 to 30 min. empty, in order to allow the temperature inside to become stabilized. Then the first samples were introduced. A load thermocouple, with recording pyrometer, was connected with the sample of the heaviest gauge. About 10 min. was required for the material to reach temperature and the soaking time was counted from that point. After zoo min. soaking, the second group of samples was introduced without stopping the furnace. After 200 min. more, the third group of samples was introduced, and so on, until the last sample had been introduced. Every time the furnace was opened and new samples were added, a drop of temperature was registered by the thermocouple connected with the material

This report, the third in an annual series, outlines recent trends and developments in the minerals industry. Discussed are new methods, equipment, techniques, and systems used to more, effectively extract and process minerals and fuels. Environmental considerations, reduced ore grades, and the related increased quantities of material handled were the dominent concerns of the minerals industry in 1972. Productivity increased in most mineral commodities as equipment became more mobile, versatile, and sophisticated. Increasingly, equipment designs incorporated health and safety features. There was considerable interest in the field of energy and in pollution-free metallurgy processes.

[The quantity of explosives sold in the United States in January, 1931, for domestic consumption, amounted to 368,100 kegs (9,202,510 pounds) of black blasting powder, 4,810;000 pounds of permissible explosives, and 16,533,000 pounds of high explosives other than permissible. These figures are based on reports received by the United States Bureau of Mines, Department of Commerce, from nearly all manufacturing companies, and include an estimate of sues by several companies that do not furnish monthly reports. Reports actually received from manufacturers shored sales of 365,977 kegs of black blasting powder (consisting of 220,892 kegs of granular powder and 145,085 kegs of pellet powder), 4,687,900 pounds of permissible explosives, and 15,498,152 pounds of high explosives other than permissible. Sales in January, 1931, were smaller than in January last year, the decreases being 14 per cent for black blasting powder, 19 per cent for permissible, and 17 per cent for high explosives other than permissible. Sales in January 1931 when compared with soles in December 1930, show increases for all three classes of explosives as follows: 2 per cent for block blasting powder, 16 per cent for permissible explosives, and 7 per cent for other high explosives. PERMISSIBLE EXPLOSIVES: Of the 4,687,900 hounds of permissible reported sold during January, 97 per cent was used for coal-mining operations, Including 32 per cent for anthracite mines and 65 per cent for bituminous mines. The following Staten were the largest users of permissible explosives daring January: Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Illinois, Alabama, Kentucky, Indiana, and Utah. Their combined sales represented 89 per cent of the entire sales reported for this class of explosives.]

Equilibrium in the reaction was investigated at temperatures of 1500°, 1550°, and 1600°C for sulfur concentrations up to 7.2 wt pct. Multisample crucibles contained the liquid alloys in a resistance-heated furnace using a technique especially designed for the study of more complex alloys to be reported separately. Modern free-energy data are used to correct the H2S:H2 ratio for dissociation of H2S and calculalion of the partial pressure of S2. Published data on the equilibrium are similarly corrected. Thermodynanzic treatment of the data employs the composition variable zs = nS/(nFe — nS) and the activity coefficient Gs = as/zs The data at 1500" and 1550°C are fitted by the equation log s = —2.30zs. Within the limits of experimental error the same coefficient is applicable to the data at higher temperatures. Equations are given for the free-energy change in Reaction [I] as well as for the solution of S, gas in the metal. The heat of solution of 1/2 s2 is -32.28 i2.5 kcal. Uncertainty in the free energy is very much smaller. For dilute solutions of interest in steelmaking, the activity coefficient of sulfur is unchanged from that listed in Basic Open Hearth Steel-making. DETERMINATIONS of the thermodynamic properties of sulfur in liquid iron by Morris and williams1 and by Sherman, Elvander, and chipman' provided a basis for control of sulfur in steelmaking processes. From the standpoint of understanding the chemistry of metal plus nonmetal in liquid solution they left several questions unanswered. The activity of sulfur in dilute solution at about 1600°C was well-established but temperature coefficients were uncertain, due at least in part to the use of the optical pyrometer and uncertainty regarding the effect of sulfur on emissivity. It appeared that deviation from Henry's law increased with increasing temperature, a most unusual behavior requiring either confirmation or disproof. These studies were based on experimental determination of equilibrium in the reaction: At high temperatures H2S is partially dissociated so that the gas mixture contains HS, S2, and S in addition to HS. At the time of the earlier studies the free energies of these constituents were unknown and it was therefore impossible to make adequate correction for dissociation. Observations on the effects of alloying elements by Morris and coworkers1, 3 and by Sherman and Chip-man4 enable us to assess the effects of alloying elements on the activity and to make corrections for incidental impurities in the binary liquid. These studies as well as a number of more recent investigations will be reviewed in detail after out own experimental results have been presented. It was our purpose in planning this study to avoid uncertainties regarding the emissivity of alloys and the errors of thermal diffusion which plagued some of the early attempts,5 by using a resistance furnace and thermocouple in preference to induction heating and optical pyrometer. Modern data on free energies of the gaseous species are to be applied to our data and to those of other investigators to obtain corrected values of K1 and of the activity coefficient and ultimately to relate the sulfur content of the bath to the equilibrium partial pressure of S,. Extension of the study to include ternary and complex solutions will be described in a later section. EXPERIMENTAL METHOD a) Preparation and Calibration of H2-H2s Gas Mixture. The source of hydrogen sulfide was a preparer mixture of 43 pct H2S, balance hydrogen, contained in a large aluminum cylinder. This was passed through anhydrone and through a microflowmeter. Hydrogen was passed through platinized asbestos, ascar-ite, and anhydrone, and through a capillary flowmeter. Argon was passed through copper wool at 500°C, then through ascarite, anhydrone, and a flowmeter. The flow rate of hydrogen was kept constant at 200 ml per min, to which an arbitrary amount of the hydrogen-hydrogen sulfide mixture was constantly added and then the prepared gas mixture was introduced into the reaction tube through a gas mixer. In certain experiments 200 ml per min of argon was added to the hydrogen-hydrogen sulfide gas mixture to increase the total flow rate of gas. The ratio of hydrogen-hydrogen sulfide in the inlet gas was checked for each run by chemical analysis. A sample of the gas taken from a bypass was bubbled through zinc and cadmium acetate solution (4 pct zinc acetate, 1 pct cadmium acetate, and 1 pct acetic acid) to remove hydrogen sulfide from the gas mixture, and the flow rate of the remaining hydrogen was measured by a soap bubble method to determine the volume of hydrogen. The amount of hydrogen sulfide absorbed in solution was determined by titration with iodine against sodium thiosulfate, with starch used as the indicator. The ratio of hydrogen sulfide to hydrogen in the inlet gas could be kept within ±2 pct in the range from 10-2 to 5 x 10"4 which corresponds to from 0.2 to 7.0 wt pct sulfur in liquid iron. b) Furnace Arrangement. Environmental issues have evolved considerably over the last two decades. The main contributing factors, to name a few, have been the changing values of our modern societies, the globalization of trade and its linkage to environment, evolution and accessibility of information/communication technologies, better educated populations, climate change, long range transport of toxics and the increasing influence of NGOs and multistakeholders. As well, environmental management of mining operations had to be realigned in order to meet these new realities and to respond to more elaborated regulations oriented towards sustainability. Environmental Management Systems (EMSs) have emerged and have been introduced to meet not only the assurance of conformance to regulations but also to prevent pollution and to apply the continuous improvement of mining processes. EMS models have been developed and certification to international standards (e.g. ISO-14 001) is a common practice. Globalization has imposed challenges and additional requirements to environmental management. Developing a mine in emerging countries implies dealing with international agencies, local communities and a variety of government infrastructures to obtain a ?licence to operate?. This paper presents the structure of our EMS and how we have adapted its implementation to our operations in South America.

Fundamentally, the development of a minerals processing project is a very risky enterprise. Most mining companies do not have sufficient financial resources to undertake significant projects and hence have to undertake external financing. Indeed, most resource companies understand the high risks associated in developing their projects and therefore, wish others to share in the risks. Most merchant banks, on the other hand, are searching to find suitable resource development projects in which they can share their risk and also share a large proportion of the ærewardÆ. To resolve this issue a Feasibility Study is completed by the project developer and assessed by the merchant bank often with the assistance of an æIndependent EngineerÆ (IE) who assesses the validity of the development proposal. Generally speaking, unless the Feasibility Study has been prepared improperly, the technical aspects of most mineral projects are reasonable. Some of the more recent so-called æhigh techÆ projects are exceptions but these still do not present major technical mistakes or misconceptions. p> In most cases, the major criticism the IE presents after discussing the validity of the ore reserves focuses on production plans, capital costs and operating costs. Of these three parameters the production plan is one in which owners tend to be far too optimistic and financiers, until recent years, have not taken a position. The most critical part of the development plan is the ability of the project, as designed, to attain the required design performance and, even more critically, the ability of the owner to reach and sustain this level of production. In short, how long should the æramp-upÆ be planned to take? Financiers have become more circumspect and are now taking a more conservative view of new project performance by factoring into their project financial analysis longer periods of ramp-up, higher capital costs and higher operating costs. However, these financiers can also be part of the æproblemÆ if they become overly conservative. This paper attempts, by way of case studies available from the public arena, to identify the pitfalls the project owners can meet and possible means of avoiding the disastrous financial conundrum whereby the second or third æownerÆ is the company that reaps the rewards initially extrapolated. The paper briefly discusses this problem by referring to projects known to the author and including previous studies that looked at this very problem. It is emphasised that many of the opinions stated within the paper are strictly those of the author and could be subject of much debate.

A blasting improvement program began in 1985 at two traprock quarries in Connecticut to reduce the levels of ground motions and airblast measured at residential structures surrounding the operations. The quarries are situated within town limits, adjacent to a number of historical and other structures. Although blasting vibration amplitudes were found to be far below those that could produce cosmetic defects in structures, they were perceived to be the cause of structural defects observed by homeowners. Based on a comprehensive * review of blasting practices in place during1985, an extensive vibration monitoring program was implemented. The initial study included the instrumentation of selected residential structures to record and analyze strains imposed within structures from quarry blasting, environmental changes, and from daily household activities. A comparison of the results was made with the results reported by the U.S. Bureau of Mines in 1980. The highest strain imposed in drywall from blasting (13 J_I strain) was 12% and 1% of the highest strain levels recorded for normal household activities and temperature changes, respectively. The present philosophy in production blasting is to attempt to keep vibration amplitudes as low as practical by implementing state-of-art blasting control techniques. Currently, blasting seismographs are placed in a circular manner around each quarry, providing production blast vibration records for 360 degrees of coverage at distances of 2500 to 4000 ft. from blasting operations. Seismograph and production blast records are analyzed each year and become part of a Blasting Improvement Plan submitted to the local zoning commission as part of the annual operating permit process. This paper summarizes the results of previous vibration monitoring programs and outlines the modifications made to blasting practices to minimize the levels of ground motions and airblasts. The public relations efforts and standard corporate procedures used by company personnel to address all blast related complaints and alleged damage claims since 1985 are also discussed.

DURING 1916, the St. Joseph Lead Co. milled 2,505,670 tons of ore. This is a daily operating average of 7855 tons. The economic concentration of such a large tonnage necessarily requires a plant equipped with modern machinery and operated efficiently. The milling process used in producing this output has been a gradual development through the long period of years that the company has been in existence. It consisted of breaking the ore into small pieces by hand, pulverizing in a Blake crusher and a pair of Cornish rolls to approximately minus 6 mm., and jigging in the old-fashioned hand jigs. Only the coarse heavy galena was saved, the gangue being shoveled off and discarded. The output for the first year under this method was only 240 tons of pig lead. The first mill of the company was a combination of extensions and additions built from time to time as the mines developed. It was a museum of early mulling machinery, such as jigs, percussion tables, huddles, dolly tubs, log washers, etc., following no definite flow sheet. The chats, or tailings, were hauled to waste dumps by mule and ox teams, as much as 500 tons per day being moved in this manner, until a railroad was built in 1880. This mill was burned in 1883, at which time the annual output had reached approximately 7300 tons of pig lead. A new mill of 500 tons capacity was designed and built by C. B. Parsons. This mill has been admirably described by H. S. Monroe.1 The ore was crushed in Blake crushers, Cornish rolls, through 6-mm. screens, and treated by jigs of the Parsons type, percussion tables and log washers, or trunking machines, for cleaning the galena. The Iron Road Limited Central Eyre Iron Project (CEIP) area, located on the Eyre Peninsula of South Australia, covers extensive Archaean iron formations that occur as coarse-grained magnetite bearing gneiss. The cumulative strike length, estimated from aeromagnetic data, is at least 95 km.The project is located in a grain growing area 185 km west of the existing iron ore and steel making operations of OneSteel at Whyalla. A narrow gauge railway built to transport agricultural products to the deep-water port of Port Lincoln, 175 km to the south, traverses the project area. A number of well-serviced rural townships are located nearby. Current activities include resource expansion drilling, extensive metallurgical test work, community consultation and a Prefeasibility Study (PFS) that commenced in April 2010.The PFS has encompassed the Central Eyre Iron Project, comprising the three significant iron occurrences (Warramboo, Kopi and Hambidge) and was completed in early 2011. Extensive test work programs and metallurgical modelling confirmed viable process options for the project, using simple off the shelf processing technology.Preconcentration by coarse cobbing yielded promising results, and is the key to reducing not only the capital expenditure but also the operating cost, in particular the power cost, which is the highest operating cost component of a magnetite benefi ciation plant. The ore is also amendable to high pressure grinding rolls (HPGR) processing. This offers a potential for further reduction of the energy requirements.Test work also confirmed that a high grade blast furnace quality concentrate (~68 per cent Fe) can be produced at a relatively coarse grind (P80 106 µm).

THE scarcity of values of tensile strength of rocks has been explained by the lack of successful testing procedures. In the case of mine rock a description is given' of the difficulties encountered in testing a cylindrical specimen, such as a core, by conventional methods. Over a period of years the following method has given definite and reproducible results with the weakest as well as with the strongest rocks. It does not completely supersede the use of cores with special fixtures but is a supplement in all cases where cores cannot be obtained, as from soft rocks, or in cases where it is less expensive to prepare test specimens by cutting them out of the rock instead of drilling cores. Principle and equipment are the same as for the test for tensile strength of hydraulic-cement mortar.' The test specimen, Fig. 1, has the shape of a briquet. While in the original cement mortar test the briquet is cast in a special mold, it is prepared from rocks in different ways, depending on how easily they can be cut and shaped. Soft rocks, which cannot be core-drilled with a carboloy or diamond bit, are simply hand-cut. Only two dimensions need be watched. The first is the 1-in. diam at the narrowest cross-section of the briquet. The other critical measure is the radius of curvature of the waistline, as the roller supports in the grips have a fixed distance. This radius is ground out of the solid by means of a carborundum grinding wheel having a 3/4-in. radius. Medium hard rocks can be core-drilled with a carboloy bit. The resulting core can be used for nondestructive sonic testing first, and after that for any destructive test. By using an EX-bit and by carefully placing the coreholes, preferably by using a tenplate such as shown in Fig. 1, it is possible to obtain from the rock a punched sample from which numerous tensile briquets can be made. The outside radius of the EX-bit differs from the radius of curvature of the briquet by 1/8 in., but this still permits placing and aligning the specimen in the grips. In the case of bedded rocks the core might have bedding planes normal to the plane of the briquets, and rocks can be tested in any arrangement of the bedding planes desired. Hard rocks, limestones, igneous, and metamor-whic rocks can only be diamond-drilled or diamond-cut. Here the method of getting the tension briquets by accurate placing of EX-drill holes is especially economical. The tops of the briquets made from hard rocks cannot be rounded; they are straight cuts made with a diamond cut-off saw and rounded off on a polishing wheel. Results: As long as specimens broke over the waistline the results were considered acceptable. Further statistical treatment of the tests' showed a satisfactory percentage of standard deviation. The tensile strength values obtained by this method do not represent true values because of the stress concentration caused by the curvature of the side of the piece and because of the closeness of the grips. The ratio of maximum to average stress at the plane of failure has been determined to be about 1.75." All tensile strength values listed in Table I are corrected accordingly. To avoid this stress-concentration, if there are a sufficient number of cores, tensile strength can be measured by imbedding the cores in mortar in the two outer briquets in the gangmold.4 Strain-Measurements: The applicability of the briquet specimens for strain observations was tested in the case of sandstone and shale. Two element Rosette SR-4 strain gages were used. Young's modulus and Poisson's ratio, both in tension, were computed and found to be different from those in compression, determined during the same test series and from the same rock, see Table I. Atualmente, a exigência do mercado pela produção de aços de alta qualidade aliada a redução de custos, impulsiona maiores investimentos em novas tecnologias e a busca pelo melhor conhecimento dos processos que ocorrem na usina siderúrgica. O desgaseificador RH tem-se revelado um equipamento fundamental para produção de aços ultra low carbon, tipo cada vez mais solicitado pelos maiores consumidores de aço. Diante disso, este trabalho visa a elaboração de um modelamento matemático das curvas de descarburação e desidrogenação no RH thyssenkruppCSA. A geração dessas curvas possibilitou o estudo do comportamento do teor de carbono e hidrogênio durante o tratamento das corridas no reator. Os resultados demonstram que o teor de carbono médio obtido não está dentro do esperado, conforme previsto pelo comissionamento. No entanto, a desidrogenação pode ser considerada como satisfatória.
