Compliance standards for respirable dust, which are reduced because of high quartz concentrations, have become an industry-wide problem. Research on the physical and chemical character of quartz-classified particles in respirable coal mine dusts indicates that they may exist in intermixed layers or may he coated by clay or coal material. The relative amount of intermixing varies with the coal seam being mined. If most of the quartz particles of a mine dust are "pure," then the dust may have a high fibrogenic risk potential because of truly free silica and the compliance standard should he lowered. If, however, the quartz is locked inside another material matrix, or coated, a reduced compliance standard may not he appropriate.

The flotation behavior of two high sulfur coals using a non-ionic surfactant as collector from two series of compounds containing oxygenated functional groups was studied in detail using a 2-liter Denver flotation cell. The performance of these reagents was compared with that of an oily collector, namely dodecane. The results showed that at the same coal recovery, a much lower dosage of these non-ionic surfactants was required as compared with that of dodecane. More import was the performance of these compounds as promoters for oxidized as well as un oxidized coal. Mechanisms of interaction of these compounds with the coal are suggested.

A system to continuously measure the concentration of radon in mine ventilating air has been developed and tested in a uranium mine. In use, the air/radon mixture to be monitored is pumped through filters into a scintillation cell where nuclear decay of the radon produces flashes of light. These are electronically counted, giving a quantitative measure of the radon present. Air is continuously drawn from the mine atmosphere into the radon sensor box. This air sample passes through two filters into the detector cell as shown in the schematic diagram. A portion of the radon in the detector cell will experience nuclear decay, producing polomium 218 and an alpha particle. The alpha particles from the fraction that decays strike a zinc-sulfide coating on the inside wall of the cell and produce flashes of light. These enter a photo-multiplier tube which records each flash as an electrical pulse. An amplifier increases the voltage of each pulse, allowing electronic screening to remove noise and other undesirable pulses. The remaining pulses are counted by a conventional data acquisition system.

A cooperative research effort was established between the Tilden Mining Company LC, the United Steelworkers of America, and the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health to lower respirable dust levels in an iron ore grinding and concentrator plant. This cooperative effort involved three field studies to evaluate different techniques to lower respirable dust levels. The greatest impact on lowering respirable dust concentrations throughout this facility was achieved through ventilation changes. The most significant improvement was realized by changing the ventilation profile throughout the entire facility. The ventilation to this grinding and concentrator facility was provided by approximately 40 roof fans operating in either the intake or exhaust mode. The operation of these fans was significantly changed in an attempt to pro-vide more of a directional flow pattern throughout the facility, as well as to more closely balance the intake and exhaust air volume. This change accounted for a 31 pct reduction in respirable dust levels in the primary grinding area of the mill. Another successful modification was to improve the sealing of a reclaim tunnel to the outside and by barricading the access point from the reclaim tunnel to the concentrator plant. This minimized the dust liberated in the conveyor tunnels from traveling through the reclaim tunnel and into the plant. These two modifications illustrate the impact that improvements in ventilation can have on lowering respirable dust concentrations in iron ore processing facilities.

THROUGHOUT the anthracite industry&apos;s history, the problem of handling and dis¬posing of refuse material has been one of major importance. In the early days of the industry&apos;s activities, only the large sizes of anthracite were satisfactory for market requirements and the smaller sizes were deposited as refuse. As time went by, more efficient coal-burning equipment was developed and a market demand was created for the finer sizes of coal. This demand made it possible to recover market¬able coal from banks deposited as refuse in the earlier days of mining. The same condition holds good today and we can see a definite trend toward the objective of utilizing the No. 4 and No. 5 buckwheat sizes. Under present conditions, we know that a limited market exists for No. 4 and 5 buckwheat; we know that the finer sizes of anthracite can be burned as pulverized fuel; we know that these fine sizes can be processed and sold as bri¬quettes, and we also know that the heat content of these fine sizes of coal is compar¬able with that of the sizes now merchan¬dized. Therefore, it should be the objective of the industry to conserve these fine sizes of coal in such manner that if and when processing facilities are developed, and market demands exist, the material can be salvaged and made available to meet these demands. From the standpoint of economical future reclamation, the ideal method of disposing of refuse containing the finer sizes of coal is to deposit it in banks separate and apart from other breaker refuse. By this procedure, the minimum amount of material will be processed in future salvage operations to recover the No. 4 and No. 5 buckwheat sizes. Many collieries in the anthracite region are operated under leases that have a specific term. These lease agreements provide that, upon expiration of the lease by term, exhaustion or otherwise, the ownership of the refuse material reverts to the lessor. Therefore, a question was raised in the minds of these operators: Why should I assume the expense of such pro¬cedure when I have no assurance that I will benefit by the future processing and sale of these fine sizes? Under present conditions, the answer to this question is not one of choice but of necessity, as restrictions imposed by legislation make it mandatory on operators of preparation plants to take necessary steps to properly treat silt-laden waters before permitting them to enter the streams. By reason of these restrictions, the disposal of fine sizes becomes a secondary_ rather than a primary operating con sideration, and the procedure for disposing of this refuse becomes a matter of choice governed principally by topographical and geographical conditions. METHODS OF HANDLING REFUSE There are three principal methods of handling and disposing of fine-size refuse; namely :

The effect of the chemical composition of pulverized bituminous coal particles on their physical transformation during the initial stages of combustion has been investigated. The results suggested that cenosphere formation does not require extensive thermal decomposition of the coal particles. The vitrinites in the bituminous coal softened earlier and developed larger cenospheres than the othe macerals. The coal particles swell to a higher extent during combustion than in pyrolysis; however, the cenospheres formed in the former process experienced a higher extent of fragmentation. The development of microporosity occurred predominantly after the resolidification of the swelled char particles. The type of macerals originally in the coal did not significantly affect the microporosity of the chars. Conversely, the morphology and anisotropy of the chars were strongly dependent on the maceral composition of the coal.

The utility of yeast, Saccharomyces cerevisiae, in the separation of quartz from hematite is demonstrated. Yeast cells, as well as their metabolites, functioned as flotation collectors, depressants or flocculants and dispersants for hematite and quartz. Interaction between yeast and the above minerals resulted in significant surface chemical changes, rendering quartz surfaces hydrophobic and hematite hydrophilic. Mineral-specific extracellular proteins and exopolysaccharides were secreted by yeast cells when grown in the presence of quartz and hematite, respectively. Quartz could be efficiently separated from hematite through microbially induced flotation and selective flocculation.

"Epithermal Zn-Pb-Cu-Ag-Au quartz-carbonate-barite veins at the Silver Queen mine near Owen Lake, west-central British Columbia, are hosted by Late Cretaceous Tip Top Hill andesitic volcanic rocks. The veins form a rectilinear northwest-northeast pattern that differs slightly from regional structural trends. The main northwest-trending veins are oriented very close to the trend of regional northwest faults, but the crossing veins tend to be more east-north-easterly (070 degrees)compared to a regional north-easterly trend (040 degrees). The character of the veins suggests they are extensional features formed by dextral slip related to Paleogene oblique subduction, or intrusion of magma at depth, or both.In detailed exploration at the mine, the veins cannot be modelled as simple tabular sheet-like bodies. Instead, they are complex structures that divide and rejoin, forming multiple veins or stringers, or are found in shear zones as replacement features with quartzsericite- clay-carbonate-pyrite alteration haloes of variable width that make definition of vein margins and correlation from hole to hole ambiguous. In addition, individual veins within each of the main structures have en echelon characterboth along strike and down dip.Geological and assay data must be carefully studied to define the margins of these complex veins before any estimation of ore reserves may be made. Where multiple veins occur in a section, ore/gangue mineralogy, assays, character of wallrock alteration, and thickness of vein and mineralized hangingwall, median and footwall zones must be used to evaluate continuity of mineralized structures. Well-defined sections are projected into areas of increasing complexity. Once the vein boundaries are defined, metal concentrations, important metal ratios(Au/Ag, Pb/Zn, Cu/Zn), and true thicknesses of the vein provide the basic data for reliable ore reserve estimation."

"Stirred media mills have proved to be more energy-efficient than the conventional ball milling for fine grinding applications. The mill performance is governed by a number of operating variables including mill stirrer speed, feed particle size, solids content and slurry rheology. A study was conducted to assess effects of mill speed, media size and density, and slurry density on the Stress Intensity (SI) in a VXPmill and thereby the relationship to mill performance. For the mill speeds tested, it was found that the optimum tip speed is 7 m/s. If the speed is too high (12 m/s) energy losses result due to mechanical friction losses and heat generation. If the speed is too low (3 m/s), the kinetic energy is not sufficient to promote breakage. The size reduction ratio increases with the increase in mill speed and the decrease in solids content especially in the coarse fraction particle sizes. The effect of slurry rheology on mill performance was shown by assessing the effects of increasing solids concentration and decreasing particle size. Rheological effects seemed to interact with mill speed such that the mill was less energy-efficient at higher solids content and at higher mill speeds particularly for grinding to fine particle sizes. "Copper-zinc ores often contain gold and silver, which can be recovered into copper concentrate by flotation as by-product. The challenges for operations that produce copper, zinc, gold and silver are the separation of copper and zinc and the low grade of precious metals. Ashele copper-zinc ore in north China contains 2.38% Cu, 0.69% Zn, 0.21 g/t Au and 18.10 g/t Ag and the plant produces copper and zinc concentrates, with gold and silver being recovered into copper concentrate. Copper occurs mainly as chalcopyrite and Zn occurs as sphalerite. Copper is well recovered with a recovery of over 94%. However, the recovery of Zn is substantially low (around 50%) due to fine grain size of sphalerite. In addition, gold recovery is much lower than expected and only 33% of gold in the flotation feed was recovered. The grade of gold in copper concentrate is also lower than the required payable grade (1.0 g/t). To determine the cause for lower Zn and Au recoveries, a plant survey program was conducted on the operation. The information acquired shows that the loss of Zn was mainly in the copper concentrates (accounting for approximately 38% of the head assay); of which, 24% was liberated, 8.5% was associated with chalcopyrite and 4.6% was associated with pyrite, indicating that the separation of copper and zinc was the main cause for the Zn loss, with liberation being the second cause for Zn loss. Future effort in improving Zn recovery should be focused on the separation of zinc from copper. Gold in the ore occurs as both microscopic gold and submicroscopic gold, accounting for 36% and 64% of the head assay, respectively. Microscopic gold occurs mainly as native gold and electrum; it is relatively coarse with a grain size of 10 to 240 µm and a large portion can be recovered by gravity. Submicroscopic gold was mainly carried by pyrite (accounting for 38%), and to a less extent, by tennantite (15%) and chalcopyrite (10%). Gold in sphalerite is nominal (1%). It is suggested that more coarse gold and tennantite be recovered and a gold recovery increase can then be achieved to obtain a copper concentrate with over 1.0 g/t Au through flowsheet optimization. Gravity concentration should be investigated and may be worth added into the existing flowsheet to maximum the gold recovery and grade.INTRODUCTIONCopper-zinc ores containing gold and silver is a subtype of polymetallic sulphide ores. Unlike porphyry copper sulphide ores and iron-oxide copper-gold ores, this type of ores often contains substantial amounts of zinc and lead. Polymetallic sulphide ores are mainly distributed in Canada, such as at the LaRonde and Horne deposits. Other examples include Mt. Morgan in Australia and Boliden in Sweden. Globally, production and reserves from gold-rich VMS deposits account for 1370 t gold. This is equivalent to 1% of the world production and reserves, whereas the Canadian total for gold-rich VMS deposits is 870 t, representing close to 10 % of Canadian production and reserves (Gosselin & Dube, 2005a, 2005b). Flotation is the principal process for processing the copper-zinc sulphides ores, for subsequent smelting, roasting, or hydrometallurgical treatment. Oxidized copper-zinc ores can also be processed using leaching technology. For example, at LaRonde operation (a Cu-Zn-Pb ore containing 3-4 g/t Au and 60-100 g/t Ag) the flowsheet consists mainly of a copper flotation circuit and a zinc flotation circuit followed by a cyanidation process of flotation tails. The precious metals are recovered with copper concentrate, zinc concentrate and cyanidation of zinc tails via Merrill Crowe precipitation (Zhou et al., 2005)."

The American literature in the field of dust sampling and analysis has been growing rapidly since 1915. Studies made since that time clearly indicate that there are three fundamental factors that determine the production of lung pathology due to dust inhalation. These are the duration of exposure, the chemical and mineralogic nature of the dust and the concentration of the potentially harmful dust. In the estimation of the amount of the potentially hazardous dust there are essentially three problems involved: (I) a determination of the size of the hazardous dust; (2) determination of the most satisfactory apparatus and technique of sampling, and (3) the most satisfactory method of analysis. A complete study of the literature shows that industrial dust varies ill size from ultramicroscopic particles to those larger than lop in diameter and that relatively few particles are found over 5u in diameter. Approximately 10 to 25 per cent are less than 0.811 in diameter and the median size as a rule is found to lie between 1.25 and 1.75 microns. From the point of view of lung pathology the particle sizes of most importance lie between 0.5 and 5u. Of all the instruments for sampling dust the Impinger apparatus is the only one that will sample a larger body of air satisfactorily with small control errors and high efficiency in both low and high concentrations of dust. The Owens apparatus has the advantage of being more portable and somewhat easier to use but it does riot permit of the sampling of large volumes of air. It has a low efficiency in high concentrations of dust and does not permit dust weights to be obtained. From the point of dust-counting technique the author points out that in 1922 considerable experimentation with dark field and oblique illumination resulted in the conclusion that such methods were not readily duplicated from day to day and therefore yielded somewhat erratic results. This investigation was carried out with low grade Murgul-Cakmakkaya copper ore once used to be dumped away as waste material. Sulphide minerals in the ore sample observed are chalcopyrite, pyrite, sphalerite and to some extent molibdenite; quartz, calcite and dolomite are the gangue minerals. The ore sample assays 0.28% Cu, 2.94% Fe and 3.36% S. Mineralogical study of the ore sample showed that adequate liberation of chalcopyrite for flota-tion was achieved below 100 µm. In flotation tests Aerophine 3418-A was the collector employed, NaOH or Ca(OH)2were the pH modifiers. Deactivators used were sodium meta bi-sulphide, starch, dextrin and lime. MIBC was the frother used throughout the tests. Test results showed that starch alone was the most suitable depressant to give the optimum metal content and recovery val-ues. Activated charcoal was used to adsorb excess collector species in the flotation pulp during cleaning stages After two stages cleaning of the rougher concentrate using starch as the depressant a copper concentrate assaying 21.2% Cu was obtained with 79.5% recovery while the tailings contained 0.01% Cu and metal losses were about 3%

Reduction kinetics of stainless steel slag in iron bath smelting reduction was studied at the temperature of 1500℃ ~ 1650℃. It was concluded that the reduction process consisted of two parts. That is to say smelting reduction was controlled by stainless steel slag melting initially and by interface reaction later. In order to increase smelting reaction rate, the melting point of slag should be decreased at the first stage and adjust the liquidity of slag at later stage. Smelting reaction rate will be accelerated by means of optimize the slag content. The optimal reduction result that all most all of the chromium in slag been recovered was obtained in temperature was 1500℃, basicity of slag was 1.0~1.2, the value of Al2O3+MgO was 25%.

O estudo desse trabalho foi voltado para a solidificação unidirecional da liga Al-9%Ni usando um dispositivo em que sua câmera interna não permite a existência de gradiente de temperatura para outra direção que não seja o sentido da solidificação. Após o processo de fusão e solidificação foram coletadas amostras de posições aleatórias ao longo do lingote para serem realizados os procedimentos metalográficos, ensaio mecânico e microscopia óptica e de varredura. A macroestrutura se mostrou predominantemente colunar vertical, e a microestrutura se mostrou dendrítica nas regiões mais próximas a extração de calor tendo seu espaçamento cada vez menor, o que influenciou no aumento da dureza. Observa-se também através de análise de microscopia eletrônica de varredura a presença de uma grande quantidade de fibras de Al3Ni, que também contribuíram para o aumento da resistência da liga.

Aiming at the recovery of copper from smelting slag, a flotation approach was studied. It was found that this slag composed of fine particles with complex association and distribution, in which bornite was the main copper-bearing mineral after a detailed mineralogy analysis via polarizing microscope, SEM and XRD. Consequently, flotation was attempted to recycle Cu in slag containing copper sulphide components. Three key factors affecting flotation were ascertained, namely, grinding fineness, the collector and the pH value, while the recovery of Cu estimated by ICP and XRF. Copper concentrate grading at 14.47 with 79.66% Cu recovery was obtained, in the condition of the grinding fineness of −0.074 mm and the proportion of 80%, reagent dosages of 50 g/t for butyl xanthate and a pH value of 10 adjusted using Na2CO3.

The near surface inclined gold ore deposit is mined out at freezing temperature. The replacement of ore pillars by artificial freezing rocks during the rock pressures control in this conditions presented no difficulties. At the present, the mining operations are maintained at a depth of more than 300 meters. The exploration of mining conditions showed partial warming of rock mass and unstable ground conditions. Analytical calculations using a mathematical model of heat exchange predicted undesirable duration of freezing of artificial pillars. Practical techniques and recommendations for mining with ice pillars as an artificial support system using a new freezing method are discussed.

O processo de vácuo é a solução típica aplicada quando é hora de atualizar o nível de qualidade do aço de uma aciaria existente. A instalação do novo RH de 150t na planta integrada no México e do novo Tanque de Desgaseificação à Vácuo (VD) de 135t no Canadá para a produção de tubos de alta qualidade na América do Norte, é um exemplo típico disso. A nova instalação inclui o mais recente conceito de design para este tipo de equipamento: operações totalmente automatizadas e menor impacto ambiental são os principais aspectos do projeto. A solução de bomba mecânica a seco continua sendo a melhor abordagem de investimento e custo operacional para a tecnologia de vácuo. Os principais aspectos do design da planta são descritos neste documento. O desgaseificador a vácuo RH é responsável pela melhoria das performances metalúrgicas, especialmente em termos de nitrogênio, remoção de hidrogênio e nível de pureza do aço. O processo a jusante e os resultados estão estritamente ligados aos desempenhos do desgaseificador a vácuo. Consumption of Diesel fuel oil in the United States has increased very rapidly during recent years. At the present time approximately 5 percent of the crude oil refined in this country is said to be processed for this purpose. This figure represents approximately 20 percent of the total distillate-type fuel oils now being produced in the United States. One factor contributing greatly to the recent increase in consumption of Diesel fuel oil has been the conversion from steam locomotives to Diesel engines by a number of railroads. Other contributing factors are greFl.ter use of Diesel engine8 in buses, trucks, tractors, water craft, and stationary power plants. The growing importance of Diesel fuel oil has resulted in a need by the petroleum industry, engine manufacturers, and consumers for more information regarding the types and quality of Diesel fuels currently being marketed. To supply this information, the American Petroleum Institute and the Bureau of Mines, United states Department of the Interior, under a cooperative agreement, have conducted a survey of Diesel fuel all produced in refineries in this country during 1950. Under the agreements, samples of Diesel fuel oil, representative of actual shipments, were analyzed by the manufacturers in accordance with instructions issued by the Fuel Survey Panel of the Automotive Research Committee of the American Petroleum Institute. Results of the analyses were transmitted to the Bureau of Mines, and that agency has studied the data and compiled them by groups in comparable form as shown in the tables of this report.
