Planar solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) offer great promise as stationary power generation devices, primarily due to their flexibility in terms of fuels, high energy conversion efficiency (when both electricity and heat are captured), and their relatively low fabrication costs. However, the anode performance can be compromised by such factors as exposure to certain sulfur-containing fuels and the deposition of coke when using hydrocarbon fuels. In terms of the cathode, its performance is limited primarily by the slow kinetics of the oxygen reduction reaction, while its lifetime can be negatively affected by factors related to the corrosion of currently used stainless steel interconnect materials. This talk will present an overview of these challenges and some possible solutions to these problems. The presentation will also focus on how electrochemical methods can be used to evaluate and improve the performance of SOFC anodes, cathodes, and interconnect materials. In addition, recent promising research efforts directed towards performance enhancement of SOFCs through the use of nanoscale electrocatalysts will be discussed.

Vanadium ore is widely distributed in black rock series (Fan, Zhang and Ye, 2004) in many provinces of China, which accounts for 87% (Zuo, Peng and Dugang, 2001) of vanadium reserves in China. In Cambrian black rock series in south Qinling Mountain, there are large or medium-sized sedimentary deposits such as Zhongcun vanadium deposit, Yinhua vanadium deposit, Qianjiaping vanadium deposit, Xiajiadian gold-vanadium deposit and Lengshuigou vanadium deposit. The vanadium is distributed in other minerals mainly in the form of isomorphic replacement. These types of ore are characterized by no independent vanadium mineral, low grade and vast reserves. Now in China the vanadium extraction technology is backward with low utilization rate of resources. The difficulties of vanadium extraction from black rock series are that the enrichment by means of mechanical beneficiation is difficult; the cost of direct chemical extraction is high and the emission of waste gas from pyrogenic process does not conform to environmental protection standard. Therefore the study of vanadium occurrence, the improvement & optimization of vanadium extraction technology and the realization of pollution-free and low-cost extraction of vanadium from black rock series are of great and realistic importance for environment-friendly exploitation & utilization of vanadium resource in China. The study is based on carbon content in ore of Cambrian black rock series in south Qinling Mountain. Two kinds of ore are selected. Vanadium ore with low carbon content (TC<1%) is taken as Sample 1 while vanadium ore with high carbon content (TC>10%) as Sample 2. Based on analysis of ore?s lithologic features and vanadium?s occurrence, a vanadium extraction technological process characterized by selective grinding, low cost and no pollution is proposed.

The effect of SiO2addition on the decomposition of Li2CO3was investigated at temperatures up to 1000ºC. It was found that addition of SiO2greatly enhanced the decomposition of Li2CO3. The main decomposition reaction started at around 600ºC, and completed just above the melting point of Li2CO3. The major decomposition product was Li2O?SiO2irrespective of the Li2CO3to SiO2mixing ratio while both reactants were available. It was ascertained that a liquid layer betweenLi2CO3and SiO2particles formed and facilitated the decomposition reaction. The governing reaction of the decomposition was the one between the dissolved Li2CO3and SiO2in the liquid layer to form Li2O?SiO2. The decomposition rate was independent of the Li2CO3/SiO2mixingratio until either one had been completely exhausted. When excess Li2CO3existed, it further reacted with the initial product of Li2O?SiO2to form 2Li2O?SiO2. When SiO2was found in excess, on the other hand, no further reaction took place. This is attributed to the fact that uponLi2CO3exhaustion there is no liquid phase available to facilitate further reaction. The apparent activation energy of the decomposition of Li2CO3in existence with SiO2is 198 kJ mol-1.

The successful `marriage&apos; between a company seeking to raise funds to develop a project and their financiers calls for a strong mutual understanding of each other&apos;s needs. For a company attempting to raise funding, the alternative methods are ever expanding. The optimum method will vary depending on the financial position, risk/reward outlook of the company and the strength of the project for which development capital is being sought. It is likely that small mining companies will need to raise equity funds for advancing projects to the development stage. At that time, they will probably still require a reasonable level of shareholder equity to meet the requirements of banks and other parties to cover potential cost over-runs on the project and feasibility costs. Larger companies, however, are likely to find it much easier and cheaper to raise debt from banks. When evaluating companies and projects for funding, banks will pay particular attention to the quality and experience of management in developing similar projects and it may be necessary for some companies to retain the services of outside consultants. Before a project needs funding, companies should meet with potential financiers to develop relationships to select and ensure a smooth transaction to funding in the future.

This paper is a continuation and extention of the previous paper on energy-efficient placer mining methods which was presented in 2007 at the World Gold Conference in Cairns, Australia (Nere-tin, 2007a). The paper reports the results only on gravel processing as they were not fully discussed in the previous paper. It is common knowledge that placer gold mining requires processing of large tonnages of gold-bearing gravels by wash plants of different types. In Russia, gold-bearing gravels are mostly disintegrated and screened by the following types of wash plants: a water canon, a derocker or a scrubber trommel. Gold-bearing gravel processing is regarded as highly energy-intensive due to high energy consumption for transportation of large tonnage of material and high pressure water flow rate. The industries requiring a significant expenditure of energy normally estimate the process efficiency by energy consumption per product unit. In order to obtain quantitative data on energy consumption for gravel processing and to estimate placer mining costs, in 2003~2006 four placer gold mines located in the Irkutsk Region were thoroughly investigated through time and motion studies. At all these placer mines gravels were processed by a water canon, a derocker or a scrubber trommel. The objective of the study was to investigate the following parameters: ? wash plant throughput rate per hour; ? hourly diesel fuel and power consumption per cubic meter of gravel processed; ? volume per cent and shape of oversize material; ? different combinations of gravel processing methods. The results from this study were as follows: ? specific energy consumption per cubic metre of gravel processed for different combinations of gravel processing methods was estimated; ? a correlation between energy consumption and unit cost of gravel processing was determined; ? effect of yield and shape of oversize material on wash plant throughput rate per hour was de-fined; ? energy-efficient gravel processing methods were developed. Based on these results, an improved method of gold-bearing gravel processing was proposed. Implementation of this method at a placer mine saved US$ 123 000 in operating expenses only during a short-time Siberian placer mining season. At the same time, this method improved gravel disintegration, screening and processing operations used at the mine. Another advantage of the pro-posed method was higher gold recovery due to reduced yield of undersize material. In order to improve efficiency of gravel processing, a wash system including a derocker for primary gravel processing and a lightweight scrubber trommel was developed. There are two economic benefits of replacing water cannons with the proposed wash system. The first benefit includes lower operating costs for gravel processing due to lower specific energy consumption, while the second benefit is lower gold losses during slurrifying (disintegration and screening) and sluicing of the undersize material.

The recent evolution of the piling market clearly shows a growing demand for screw piles with soil displacement. The recently developed Omega Screw pile ful-fill these new expectations, combining the advantages of vibration-free systems and the behaviour of a displacement pile. The paper describes recent experience and new applications with this very promissing pile. Full-scale load tests were carried out in different countries as U.K. or Sweden. A very attractive and innovative piled embankment is also described, using geogrids in order to transfer the loads from the superstructure to non-reinforced Omega-piles.

The time-to-fracture test has been applied to pure platinum and to two alloys of platinum under the special conditions of small cross-sectional area of the specimens and of a test temperature above the annealing temperature. While the results are similar in character to those secured with large specimens of steel at temperatures below the annealing temperatures, two differences are noted: (I) an upward inflection in the curves for log stress vs. log time for the alloys, and (2) a sharp break in the curve for log stress vs. log time for pure platinum when single crystals filled the wire. The experiments showed that: (I) platinum and 10 per cent rhodium-platinum maintained their strengths at IIOO°C. better than did to per cent iridium-platinum, and (2) the rhodium-platinum after a time exceeded the iridium-platinum in strength at IIOO°C. Platinum alloys in their service at high temperatures encounter conditions somewhat similar to those that exist in the usual form of the "time-to-fracture"l test with steel. This paper is intended primarily to present results obtained by a "time-to-fracture" test under conditions approximating actual service for platinum (at the temperature IIOO°C. under oxidizing conditions) with three materials, pure platinum (99.99 per cent), a platinum alloy with 10 per cent iridium, and a platinum alloy with 10 per cent rhodium. The experimental procedure differed from that previously used in this type of measurement in that the samples were of small diameter (0.010 in.), were fully annealed, and were tested at a temperature definitely above their annealing points (600°C., IOOO°C. and 1050°C., respectively, for 60 per cent cold reduction and 15 min. heating time2,3). The experimental arrangement was similar to that previously described,&apos; using as heating unit a small, horizontal, platinum-wound furnace, ½ by 12 in., maintained at constant temperature by an automatic controller. The samples were 0.010-in. wires, which had been annealed at 1200°C. by drawing them slowly through the furnace. The time-to-fracture was measured electrically. Elongation was not determined because of the difficulties inherent in the experimental arrangement. Life—that is, the time-to-fracture—was considered the important property in these first tests. No attempt was made to measure the reduction in area, but the types of fracture were noted qualitatively; in the text they are referred to as (I) the normal, plastic, or necked fracture, (2) the knife-edge fracture, and (3) the brittle or intercrystalline fratture with small reduction of area. Results for different constant applied stresses are plotted in Fig. I. In all cases at least two trials were made for each stress, although they cannot always be indicated separately on the curves. A study has been carried out on the dusts from Hudson Bay Mining and Smelting&apos;s Flin Flon copper smelter. The aim of the work was to determine the mechanisms of dust formation and the deportment of the various constituents. The work concentrated on the copper converters, but the electrostatic precipitators and baghouse also clean the reverberatory furnace off gas, so some mixing will have occurred. The dust composition was found to vary with distance from the furnace, and to be made up of three major components: solidified droplets, unreacted flux, and condensed particles. The solidified droplets were formed from material ejected from the converter during blowing, while the flux was blown out of the converters immediately after charging. The condensed particles contained the majority of the lead and zinc, as well as the volatile impurities. There was also a significant soluble content of the dusts, increasing with distance from the furnace. The condensed material may be separated from the remainder by a simple washing and sizing technique.

"Traditionally minerals processing equipment, such as jigs, are studied by characterising the feed and products from these processes. With this approach important details on the mechanisms of a process can be overlooked since assumptions have to be made on the internal operations of the equipment. Positron Emission Particle Tracking (PEPT) is a non-invasive technique that can be used to track a particle’s movement inside a closed vessel. PEPT makes it possible to observe the inner workings of a process, providing new information that was unattainable only a few years ago. Jigging has long been considered as one of the most difficult mineral processing techniques to model, due to the complexity of the mechanisms contributing to the separation of minerals during the jigging process. In this investigation PEPT was used to study the particle flow inside a laboratory batch jig. The aim was to determine if the particle trajectories could provide new insight into the jigging and its mechanisms. Three dimensional particle trajectories were observed with spatial and temporal resolution high enough to see details of the individual pulses during jigging. It was found that the pulse height is very dependent on the position in the jig bed. The vertical component from the trajectories showed the rate at which particles move through the jig bed (stratification rate) and it was seen that the density of a particle affects the stratification rate more that the particle’s size and that the shape in the range that was tested had little to no influence. Other phenomena such as a circular flow pattern was observed inside the jig and it was found that smaller lower density particles are affected by this circular flow pattern which tend to disperse these particles throughout the jig bed. Visualising the flow inside a jig by means of PEPT has shown to be instrumental in the deeper understanding of the process."

I HAVE previously demonstrated to you as well as I knew how in what way ores are treated and then how the separated metals are brought to their pure and ultimate limit of perfection by means of smelting and other artificial fires; all except gold, which remained incorporated in the silver. Because the method used for the others does not serve for this, and if indeed it did serve it would be a great labor and could not be done without a great loss of the thing, it is therefore necessary to proceed with the practice of another art if you wish finally to extract gold from the bonds of the intrinsic substance of silver, for it exists bound and scattered in this like the soul in the body of living creatures. In this, unlike the other works where you make direct use of the vigor of the fire, you use a substance that is like water, drawn by the force of fire from a very powerful composition of two materials. This is a very marvelous thing to consider as a liquor because of its powerful effects. It is made by artificial distillations and it has an acid property and the power of corroding and reducing into itself silver and any other metal placed in it, with the exception of gold. Nothing is apparent in it except a pure water. It is indeed a very ingenious thing for which we must be greatly indebted to that philosopher, alchemist, or whoever else was its discoverer. The silver that contains gold is put in this water, and from its former quiet state you will see it change as if forced to combat and breathlessly devour and consume that silver in itself and change it into water. This happens in a very short time and with very little help from the heat of the fire. All the gold that was united in the silver you will see like sand at the bottom, and when the water is taken off by decantation it will freely give you all the gold without any loss. Nor is it so ill-mannered as to fail to restore the silver to its place if you wish; and though it seems to have consumed and spoiled it as it was before, it returns it to you without loss. Many buildings in Boston are founded on untreated wood piles, which can deteriorate and lose their structural capacity if groundwater levels are lowered below the tops of the piles, exposing the wood to air in the unsaturated soils that surround the piles. The problem of wood pile deterioration due to lowered groundwater levels in Boston first became evident in 1929 following discovery of rotten piles beneath walls of the Boston Public Library building. Repairs to reconstruct the library building?s wood pile foundations were made in 1930 using pit underpinning methods. Today, more than 80 years later, the subsurface conditions beneath several of Boston?s historic neighborhood areas continue to be plagued with low groundwater levels - regrettably resulting in ongoing deterioration to the wood piles that support some of Boston?s oldest and most beautiful buildings. Pit underpinning is still recognized as the preferred approach to repair wood piles and restore uniform foundation support beneath the impacted buildings. This paper provides a brief historical review of the land filling in Boston through the early 1900s that led to the use of wood piles as building foundations. Also discussed is the impact that groundwater level can have on the long term performance of wood pile foundations and the pit underpinning procedures used to reconstruct decayed wood pile foundations in 1930 beneath the Boston Public Library, and today beneath some of Boston?s oldest buildings. Also included are discussions on engineering controls and permitting requirements that help ensure safety and protection to the workers and buildings during underpinning, and some procedures being used to supplement and improve the loading capacity of the reconstructed foundations and facilitate construction of new useable below-grade space.

"A bulk mining method is employed at the Lockerby mine resulting in the formation of large muck-piles. If these muckpiles remain in the stopes for some time they may agglomerate to the extent that the muck cannot be removed by a scooptram. A laboratory investigation was undertaken with sulphide material from the mine in order to detemine the time that oxidation begins and the flowability of the material as a f unction of several factors. The laboratory results are applied to the conditions in the muck-piles.The time of the beginning of oxidation of the material decreases as the sulphide composition, water content and availability of air increases. Oxidation is retarded by the addition of a copper sulphate solution instead of water. The unconfined yield force (strength} of the material increases with an increase in the sulphide composition, water content and time. The material ceases to be free-flowing before there is visible evidence of oxidation and this suggests that oxidation actually begins earlier and that agglomeration is also due to the capillary action of water.Broken ore should be removed from the stope prior to the time a muck-pile ceases to be free -flowing-perhaps as early as two days f or high-grade ore and 5 days f or low-grade ore. In order to control dust, 1.4 weight per cent of a 5 per cent solution of copper sulphate should be added 10 the muck-pile rather than water. This inhibits oxidation and increases the time that a muck-pile remains free-flowing."

AS I have told you before, "alloy" here signifies nothing but the mixture of one metal with another in friendly companionship. Whenever you wish to do this, you should consider the purpose that moves you, whether it is to increase the quantities, or for corruption. Then you should choose whatever has by its nature more affinity with what you wish to alloy, or whatever is best for your purpose. Give it in the melt the proportion that you wish or as much as it can support without being entirely removed from its first nature, as [73v] water is in wine or white in black if too much is added. However, you must make the proportion with a definite ratio by weight and not by chance in order that you may bring your work to the degree of perfection that you desire. For he who, proceeds with his eyes closed not only stumbles many times but frequently falls. Therefore you must know first that gold does not join in an alloy with any metal other than silver and copper. Thus if you wish to make a work of gold or to have it made, and begrudge the expense of having it fine, or if you find that you do not have enough, or if you do not care about such fineness, you must decide exactly how many carats less than perfectly fine you wish it to be, or by what weight you wish it to be increased. In order to do this accurately weigh the fine gold that you have and accompany it with silver or fine copper in the quantity that you wish to give it, and melt both these things together very well. So that you may understand the procedure better, let us suppose that you wish your gold to be 23 carats. You are to imagine that the whole quantity is twenty-four parts because this is the final limit at which the gold can be perfect. Now if this were the case, you would put in one part, which corresponds to one twenty-fourth of the whole quantity. You will have taken away one carat of the value of its fineness and increased it another in quantity. In the same way it will happen if you put in two or three or four or six. Up to the limit of one-half, you will always have gold according to the denomination of the lesser virtue and the greater quantity. The Minfurn is a novel carbon-regeneration furnace developed at Mintek. It combines the advantages of direct resistive heating in a vertical-tube furnace with those of continuous operation, in a furnace whose capital, operating, and maintenance costs compare favourably with those of conventional rotary kilns. After successful tests under experimental conditions on carbons containing different contaminants, a 3 kg/h unit was installed on the carbon-in-pulp (CIP) plant at the Klipwal Gold Mine near Piet Retief, where it has been operating at, on average, 123 per cent of its design capacity. Since the installation of the Minfurn, monthly average losses of dissolved gold of less than 0,02 p.p.m. have been maintained for several successive months for the first time since January 1989. It is also possible that the monthly average residue values have been reduced. Further improvements to the carbon circuit are possible, and the possibility of making further savings by a reduction in the carbon-throughput rate still needs to be investigated. The mathematical modeling of the furnace has progressed to the stage where the future scale-up and design of the Minfurn can be carried out by simulation of the performance of different designs, and choosing the design that yields the desired performance.

One of the greatest threats of mining in hard coal mines are underground fires, which in the past often resulted in the mining disasters. Implementation of scientific principles of fire fighting into practice contributed to a significant reduction of fire hazard in coal mines. However, despite numerous achievements of science in the fight against the underground fires, they still occur creating a potential hazard for the miners and contributing to generate significant costs of fire-fighting operations, the temporary suspension of production or loss of longwalls. This concerns both spontaneous fires and exogenous ones. A significant decrease in the number of spontaneous fires was the result of cooperation between Polish scientists with experts in the field of new methods of fire hazard prediction and selection of new fire prevention and fire hazard monitoring methods. A significant part played here researchers from the Central Mining Institute. The original method of endogenous fire risk assessment based on calorimetric tests of coal and developed mathematical model of the process of coal self-heating allow to predict the risk of spontaneous fires and select proper fire prevention measures adequate to the involved risk. The frequency of exogenous fires is in the last few years is low, but their share in the total number of fires is relatively high and constitutes about 30%. This results from the prevention activities, carried out regularly in mines which are aimed at reducing the fire hazard connected with the use of fire-resistant conveyor belts and other non-metallic materials. Further directions to reduce the hazards connected with underground fires should focus on improving the methods for monitoring hazards together with automation of fire fighting operations.

Skorpion Zinc operates a solvent extraction/electrowinning zinc plant producing over 150 000 t/a of special high grade (SHG) zinc (>99.995% Zn). In the current flow sheet copper and cadmium are cemented from the neutral leach solution using zinc powder, to prevent galvanic corrosion of plant equipment and build-up of copper in plant solutions. This process is effective but unfortunately consumes expensive zinc dust and produces a low value copper product. The EMEW® (Electrometals electrowinning) technology of Electrometals Technologies Ltd. uses a rapid flow of electrolyte through a cylindrical cell to deposit copper or other metals from dilute solution (less than 1 g/L) [1]. The copper can be deposited as powder or may be harvested as a tubular cathode product. The advantage of the use of EMEW® technology at Skorpion Zinc will be to eliminate the use of expensive zinc dust and to produce a high value copper product for sale. Following extensive bench test work, a piloting campaign was carried out at Skorpion Zinc. The tests demonstrated the ability of the EMEW® cell to effectively remove copper from solution through direct electrowinning at lower operating cost than cementation. A Metalurgia do pó surgiu como uma tecnologia incipiente no início do século passado, e desde então é objeto de inúmeros estudos acadêmicos e industriais, utilizada de forma crescente na indústria metal-mecânica desde a década de 1960. No caso particular de corpos a base de ferro sinterizado e suas ligas um tratamento termoquímico de Oxidação a Vapor, também denominado “Ferróx”, tem sido objeto de pesquisa e estudos por ser uma alternativa muito atrativa do ponto de vista técnico e econômico, melhorando as propriedades tribológicas e promovendo a vedação da porosidade interconectante. Este trabalho tem por objetivo estudar comportamento do tratamento de Oxidação a Vapor em peças de média densidade com composição básica de Ferro, Cobre e Grafite, sinterizadas em condições industriais com diferentes temperaturas. IN my address on the " Geognostical Relations of the Metals," delivered before the Institute on the 20th of February last (Vol. I Transactions, p. 331), I spoke of the rocks in the vicinity of Thunder Bay, Lake Superior, where I indicated two series of uncrystalline rocks resting upon the Huronian schists, the lower one consisting of dark-colored argillites and sandstones overlaid, apparently in slight discordance, by nearly horizontal red and white sandstone and marls, which were compared with those of Sault Ste. Marie, and those of the Portage Lake district, on the south shore. These latter sand-stones, according to Brooks and Pumpelly, overlie unconformably the Keweenaw series of copper-bearing amygdaloids, sandstones, and conglomerates, and are in turn overlaid by the Trenton limestone. I then proposed to call this lower series of Thunder Bay, that is to say, the dark-colored argillites and sandstones which are traversed by the silver-bearing lodes of that region, the Animikie group. Shortly after the publication of that address I received an abstract of a paper on the geology of that region by Professor Robert Bell, read before the Montreal Natural History Society, February 24th. He there confirms the statement made in my address that the gold of Lake Shebandowan occurs in the Huronian, which is also seen to be cut by the silver-bearing lodes just mentioned. Professor Bell, in this paper, proposes to designate both what I have called the Animikie group, and the overlying red and white sandstones, by the name of the Nepigon group, for the reason that the upper series is best displayed about Lake Nepigon. This latter series is by Logan supposed to be overlaid by the copper-bearing amygdaloids with conglomerates and sandstones of the north shore (apparently identical with those of Keweenaw) ; and the whole together, including the Animikie group, constitute his Upper Copper-bearing group. These copper-bearing strata are by him supposed to be overlaid by the red and white sandstones of St. Mary, which are apparently the same with those sandstones which, according to Brooks and Pumpelly, overlie unconformably the similar cupriferous rocks of Portage Lake, and are, in their turn, overlaid by the Trenton limestone. Thus the sandstones which at Thunder Cape overlie the Animikie group are by Logan placed in the midst of the Upper Copper-bear-
