Although much may be learned about the economics of cold weather operations by studying successful mining ventures in southern and central Canada, it is the purpose of this article to extend the study by considering only permafrost areas. Geographically this means most of the country north of the 60th parallel. In this area, at the present time, only five Canadian companies are carrying on routine and successful mining operations on a year-round basis. However, there have been some score of unsuccessful ventures, and a number of properties in the development stage show promise of being producers. Problems of cold weather are worthy of study. It may be pointed out that successful mines in this area face problems of isolation and costly transportation as well as cold weather. To reach valid conclusions, consider the development of a mythical mineral deposit located on the 65th parallel in the heart of the barren lands; problems of isolation and transportation will be ignored.

Horizontal Waste Heat Boiler (WHB), today's proven and dominating technology for copper smelter gas cooling, has been utilized by the industry for over half a century. During this time development has taken place in geometry, flow characteristics, cleaning technology and design details. This development has been driven by improved understanding of the specific process requirements, gained both by wide experience and by utilizing new emerging design tools, like computer flow modeling. It had to wait till mid 90's to unite effective and proven Spring Hammer cleaning technology and the process benefits gained by gas guiding vanes or baffle wall in the copper smelter WHB design. The new design has demonstrated improvement in gas cooling efficiency and the process conditions down stream in form of less dust sticking problems in the boiler and precipitators. Reduced weak acid production has also been reported as a result of the design. The theoretical aspects, computer flow modeling results and actual benefits measured in old smelting line modernization are discussed. Experience £tom modernization projects such as Phelps Dodge, Atlantic Copper, Mexicana de Cobre, and Nippon Mining, Saganoseki, are discussed. In mechanical design there has been development resulting improved gas tightness with less corrosion and better control of dust sulfation. An essential improvement is the integration of the boiler hopper and dust removing conveyor. Having no steel plate casings in the hopper and conveyor section but using of boiler tube membrane instead eliminates thermal expansion differences. The dust conveyor will be effectively cooled against hot dust lumps falling down while the acid dew point corrosion is prevented in the cooler sections of the hopper. Conceptual features are presented of a new generation Copper Flash Smelter WHB presently under construction at Boliden Mineral, Skelleftehamn, Sweden, where the latest development and innovations are adopted.

By rapidly quenching Ag-Pt alloys from the melt, a continuous series of solid solutions has been obtained. At equilibrium''2 these fcc elements form a peritectic system, Fig. 1. Weighed amounts of silver and platinum powder (325 mesh, purity greater than 99.9 pct) were mixed for 24 to 120 hr, pressed into compacts, sintered at 1000°C in a hydrogen atmosphere for at least 16 hr, and then furnace-cooled. Because of the difficulty in achieving homogeneity in alloys containing more than about 40 at. pct Pt, the sintered compacts were induction-melted under hydrogen in alumina crucibles and then cold-rolled into wires. Small amounts ("30 mg) of alloys cut from various sections of the sintered compacts or rolled wires were heated to at least 50' ~ above the liquidus in an alumina insert held within an induction-heated graphite crucible; then the molten alloy was ejected by a blast of helium onto a lightly polished copper strip held on the inner periphery of a rotating wheel. The flakes thus obtained were typically 1 sq mm in area or often slightly larger for the silver-rich alloys. X-ray diffraction patterns were obtained with nickel-filtered copper K radiation in a 114.6-mm-diam Debye-Scherrer camera with rotated specimens. Lattice parameters and associated uncertainties were estimated from extrapolations against the Nelson-Riley function. High-angle lines were always resolved and spacings were computed relative to r(CuKa!,) = 1.540508 The details of these techniques have been discussed previously.s'6 Lattice parameters of the solid solutions are plotted in Fig. 2, together with the data of Schneider and Esch,' Johansson and Linde,' and Novikova and pudnitskii. Each of the present lattice spacings represents two or more independent determinations. The alloys were homogeneous within 2 at. pct of nominal composition as estimated from the uncertainties in the lattice spacings. Many of the mechanisms involved in the achievement of metastable solid solutions by rapidly quenching from the melt have been previously discussed. There is some evidence" that such solid solubility cannot be obtained when the liquid alloys are cooled

The, control of drilling and blasting is a complicated dynamic system whose aim is to ensure safety and prepare rock of required grade and the standard level of broken material reserves Unlike other processes drilling and blasting, as an object have the following features: -a large variety of drilling and blasting methods due to specific conditions of blasting, various types of drilling equipment, schemes-of blasting, types of explosives and others; -relative continuity of drilling, the character of mammoth blasts being discrete; -increased requirements to the safety of blasting;; -a great. number of control parameters, some of them having a qualitative characteristic but not a quantitative one; -availability of feedforward and feedback with other mining processes in terms of time and space. These features predetermine the hierarchical structure of an automated system of planning and control of drilling and blasting (fig.1). The system is implemented on the basis of unity of the data base and in interre lation with other problems of controlling mining operations. An automated system of this kind makes it possible to take optimal decisions actually on all the levels and stages of operations, with rock having been blasted before extraction.

"Peirce-Smith converters (PSCs) are extensively used in the copper, nickel, and platinum group metals industries. The typical converting operation involves lateral purging of air into molten matte through a bank of tuyeres. This blowing operation occurs at low pressure from the blowers, resulting in a bubbling regime that is considered inefficient from both a process and an energy utilization perspective. Inherent drawbacks also include recurrent tuyere blockage, tuyere punching, and low oxygen efficiency.Western Platinum embarked on a full-scale industrial evaluation of generating a jetting regime by using sonic injection. Prior to industrialscale tests, a numerical assessment to ascertain the feasibility of implementing sonic injection into a PSC was conducted. The work included flow characterization at high-pressure injection achieving sonic velocity at the tuyere exit. The 2D and 3D simulations of the three-phase system were carried out using the volume of fluid method together with the RKE turbulence model to account for the multiphase and turbulent nature of the flow.This paper discusses the key findings in understanding plume extension, velocity distribution, shear wall stress analysis, and phase distribution characteristics in the system. Plant trials are also discussed with reference to the commercial aspects of a full-scale implementation of sonic injection in the smelter."

"It is quite likely that more than a handful of junior exploration companies will receive some startling news from their accountants this spring when 1989s tax returns are being prepared. These companies could find that, for the first time ever, they will have to write a cheque to the federal government on account of a new federal capital tax which became effective July I, 1989IntroductionMany mining companies which have never had to pay a federal income tax are finding that they indeed have a tax liability for 1989. Non-producing companies, such as junior exploration companies, almost automatically assume that they don't have to pay any income tax. But, a new tax imposed under the Income Tax Act catches especially the company that has no income.Effective July 1, 1989, a federal capital tax (some call it a corporation minimum tax) is payable by any corporate carrying on business in Canada where the corporation has ""taxable capital"" exceeding $10 million. As a result of the popular use of flow-through shares in recent years, many junior exploration companies are finding that their balance sheets show capital stock over $10 million, and that they are consequently caught by the new tax. Further, some of these companies are finding, to their chagrin, that the tax for 1989 was due on February 28, 1990, and that non-deductible interest is ticking away on unpaid taxes."

"Basically, the “Press-in Piling Method” was invented to eliminate construction nuisances, such as noise and vibration which have been serious unsolved problems for advancing societies over a long time. In the construction industry, piling works have been a major cause of noise and vibration, because most piling methods utilize dynamic load to install piles into the ground. The secret of the Press-in Piling Method is to utilize static loading to install pre-formed piles rather than dynamic load. The piles are hydraulically gripped and jacked into the ground by the special piling rig known as the “Silent Piler”. Therefore, the piles can form a robust and firm foundation, which is another advantage of the Press-in Piling Method.The Press-in Piling Mechanism and Implant Foundations The basis of the Press-in Piling Method is simple. The Pres-in Piling Machine installs a preformed displacement pile into the ground by static jacking force. The reaction for the Press-in Force is generated by gripping previously installed piles, which are called “Reaction Piles”. Due to this, the Press-in Piling Machine can produce a powerful piling force whilst only requiring minimal machine size.With the Press-in Piling Method, as piles are pressed into the ground, they are incorporated with the surrounding soils, which provides a large bearing capacity and passive horizontal resistance. These embedded foundations which are firmly anchored into the ground are known as “Implant Foundations”. Being embedded into the ground, the foundations are resilient and maintain their serviceability even in the worst credible design conditions."

The purpose of this talk is to report the answers to the-'two following questions: I. What unique services does the mining industry expect of mining and mineral processing engineers? II. What suggestions does industry offer to educators to help revamp curricula to meet the needs of a changing industry? As the result of many questionnaires filled out in person by presidents, managers, superintendents, chief engineers, metallurgists, and other responsible individuals in operations and management of large and small metal and nonmetallic mining companies in the U. S., and to some extent abroad, we now have some, specific answers to the above questions. Although answers to questionnaires continue to arrive at this writing (February 10) the volume already received is sufficient to clearly justify certain conclusions and observations. A copy of the tally of the first 117 questionnaires received accompanies this report, and I am certain that a compilation of additional questionnaire data will merely reinforce, the trends in thinking that have been' established thus far. "The topic of this study is the design of flexible fences to mitigate the risk due to debris flow phenomena by means of theoretical and experimental studies analysed in framework of the Rock Engineering System (RES).The study of the interaction between debris flows and flexible barriers is a major challenge since many different aspects concerning both the slope characteristics and the structure features are involved. Debris flows are often triggered by the mobilization of debris deposits that are generated by rock fall of adjacent rock walls. The rock debris deposits are difficult to be characterized by the physical and mechanical point of view due to their large variability in volume distribution and, moreover, when dealing with high mountains environment, they are also strongly affected by the presence of water at different phases (solid or liquid) depending on the temperature. The debris deposit turns unstable in relation with the geotechnical and environmental features of the areas and the instability evolution in high mountain steep valley is often a debris flow. Debris flow destructive potential is very high and protections are often needed to reduce the debris flow risk.This complexity determines the needs of comprehensive study able to include the global basin dynamic and the environmental conditions. An a-priori analysis of the influence of the different aspects can be useful to focus on the real driving aspects of the problem. Due to the complexity of the system the application of the RES methodology is recommended in order to clearly define the different assumptions needed, their influence on the simulations and a comparison among them.RES allows investigating triggering criteria, flow and depositional processes and interaction of flows with protection fences in a rational way. For this purpose, an interaction matrix is created: it summarizes the key geotechnical parameters that influence debris flows, their interactions and debris/engineering protection opera behaviour. The goal is to quantify the diagonal-off terms to assess the residual risk after barrier construction, using back analysis from real debris flow event and data collection from literature.This methodology is applied to analyze a debris flow event in the Italian Western Alps where numerical analyses are carried on to assess flow characteristics to be used for fence design through the application of an analytical and numerical model developed by the authors (Brighenti et al, 2013). In particular, the velocity and deposition heights have been estimated using the numerical code RASH3D (Pirulli, 2010), which is a single-phase model based on depth-averaged Saint Venant equations. Pathways of different lengths are studied to assess the input data necessary to design the protection barrier and to determine the associated risk. Simulation of the barrier at different places along the valley will also allow to determine optimal barrier location in terms of minimum residual risks by comparing the velocity, the volume and the energy of the debris after the barrier impact.The work will produce a possible design scheme to be adopted in this environment."

The technology of making and using ?paste? from mine tailings is increasingly well known by the minerals industry. The primary applications are water recovery and ?stacking? of tailings with minimal use of dams and ponds. This paper highlights some applications, other than water recovery and stacking, that have come to the attention of a paste thickener equipment supplier. As generated by thickeners, paste (also called ?thickened tailings?) is a non-settling, relatively high concentration, suspension of solids that can be pumped. Paste deposits with an angle of repose, allowing minimal use of dams. High solids concentration allows more water recovery at the paste thickener than is achieved in conventional and high rate slurry tailings thickeners. This paper is based on paste as produced in a flow sheet that includes a thickener, underflow pumps that are typically centrifugal, transfer pumps that can be centrifugal or positive displacement, and a distribution system at the deposition site. Examples of paste applications other than water recovery or stacking include: ?mine? an existing tailings pond by removing slurry, recovering coal or iron ore values, and return the new tailings to the pond as a paste that does not res-suspend; use paste to seal an existing tailings pond from leaking to groundwater or to an underground mine; extend the life of an existing tailings pond by thickening the tailings to paste; move an existing dry tailings impoundment to a new location by slurrying, pumping, paste thickening, and redeposit; minimize the size of a filter by paste thickening the feed; operate a paste thickener and filter in parallel on a tailings stream with re-mixing to achieve a high solids concentration. The use of paste tailings technology has been expanding over the last 15 years. The applications, both implemented and under consideration, are increasingly diverse and include all minerals tailings. Tailings handling designers should always consider a paste option to the conventional slurry solution.

Real option value (ROV) method is considered to be more practical and advanced compared to net present value (NPV) method in evaluating a mining project, in particularly when there is substantial uncertainty in the commodity market as well as possible operational flexibility embedded in the project. Usually, it may take months or even years for the commodity product to be available in the market after the mining activation decision is made. The impacts of postponing the delivery of commodity product on the mine?s ROV and NPV are assessed based on the proposed real option method. Postponing the delivery of the products leads to declined NPV and ROV compared to the non-postponing scenario and extended postpone results in higher lost values in NPV and ROV. For a mine with lower mining cost, by postponing the delivery, the exercising threshold of commodity price is lower because the mine owner anticipates that commodity price may rise during the time of postponing. A mine with higher mining cost requires a higher exercising price threshold to ?lock up? the profit when there is ambiguity of market situation due to the postponing of the delivery.

Operations of these two mining companies have some superficial similarities-geographical location, production rates, comparatively large ore reserves; but any critical comparison of mining and milling procedures or of economics must take into account the striking differences in geological environment and mineralogy of the respective ore deposits. The properties are only about 20 miles apart on an upland surface of moderate relief (part of the Interior Plateau of central B. C.) which occupies an area east of Thompson River between the towns of Ashcroft and Merritt. Being in the "dry belt" of British Columbia, water conservation is necessary at both operations.

COMPAÑIA Minera de Peñoles, S. A., at its Avalos unit operates a lead-zinc concentrator having a capacity of about 600 short tons per day. Lead and zinc concentrates are made by flotation methods. The concentrator is at Terminal de Providencia, in the state of Zacatecas, some 70 miles south of Saltillo, Coahuila. The Peñoles-Avalos railroad operating between the plant and Estacion Avalos, a distance of 6 miles, makes connections with the Coahuila and Zacatecas railroad, which in turn connects with the Nacionales de Mexico at Saltillo. The three railroads are each of different gauge, requiring the transfer of all supplies and concentrates at each junction. The mill operates on company ores, on ores from leased mines, and as a custom mill. The custom business is very small. The lead concentrates are shipped to company smelters at Monterrey, Nuevo Leon and Torreón, Coahuila. Since the European war, all zinc concentrates have been shipped to the United States. ORE TREATED The major source of ore supply is a group of four mines owned or leased by the company, some three miles south of the mill in the mountains, from which the ore is delivered to the mill by a gravity aerial tramway. Custom ore comes in by rail. The ores occur in chimneys. The upper levels contained oxidized siliceous ores of lead, copper, silver and gold, with varying amounts of zinc. These ores were direct-smelted. In the first two years of operation a good deal of the tailing loss was caused by the oxidized content of the ores milled. Much of the ore in the transition zones between the oxides and sulphides was not mined. The ores now being milled are clean, hard sulphides in a limestone gangue, with only occasional contamination of oxides. The lead and zinc sulphides are of coarse structure and are freed even above flotation sizes. The galena is usually "steel" colored, easily and quickly floated. When there is any oxidation, it is usually on the coarsest crystals. The zinc minerals vary a good deal in color; a resin sphalerite predominates but there are varying shades of brown marmatites. On an average, the zinc sulphides contain 64 per cent zinc. The only common copper mineral is chalcopyrite. Little is known of the occurrence of gold and silver. Waste minerals are mainly limestone and pyrite, both of which are barren. The ores vary from 20 to 35 per cent pyrite. Solution mining, primarily by heap leaching, has emerged as an important method for mining gold and silver in the United States. Heap leaching offers many economic and environmental advantages over conventional production techniques, in particular for lean ores and old mine waste rock. In order to more effectively pursue research on heap, dump, and in situ solution mining of gold and silver, the Federal Bureau of Mines conducted an extensive survey of leaching practices and problems. This presentation summarizes trends and statistics. Leaching is projected to provide 20 pct of primary mine produced gold and 10 pct of primary silver by the end of 1982. Current leaching practices in the United States are reviewed; operational problems and research programs to alleviate those problems are discussed.

Manufacture of aluminum foams still suffer from nonuniformity and poor reproductively for there is lack of basic knowledge of foaming process. In this paper, carbon fibers are used as novel stabilizing additive for aluminum foams, and the structure evolution of aluminum foams with different fiber content was studied. A laser rangefinder was used to detect the expansion rate of different al foams. Al foam samples are solidified at different foaming time to determine its relative density and cell size distribution. Results indicate that the cell size of foams linearly increases with the decrease of density, and the slope of the line is influenced by fiber content. The relationship between expansion ratio, density and cell size of the foams is discussed. It is concluded that the density of resulting foam is influenced by the rate of gravity driven drainage, and its cell size is determined by expansion ratio and foaming time.

"The high rock pressures at the deeper levels of the Tsumeb Mine have necessitated the changing of the mining methods and the introduction of cable bolts. After two rockfalls in the cable-bolted stopes, the mechanics of cable bolting were investigated. Practical methods were developed to find the best grout mixtures, the bond stresses between cables and cement, the bond stresses between rock and cement and the load on the cable bolts, which was mathematically calculated from data observed underground. The design of the cable bolt support system as used at the Tsumeb Mine is explained. GeneralThe Tsumeb Mine is in northern South West Africa/Namibia, approximately 400 km by road from the capital city, Windhoek, at an elevation of 1300 m above sea level. Mining operations in Tsumeb were started in 1905 by the Otavi Minen und Eisenbahn Gesellschaft and continued, with an interruption during the Depre ssion, until 1940, when the mine was closed and taken over by the Custodian of Enemy Property. The present owner, Tsumeb Corporation Limited, obtained the mine in 1947 and restarted the underground mining operations in 1949 after the mine was dewatered. Currently, the stoping operations are between 26 Level (840 m below surface) and 38 Level (1260 m below surface). In addition, the mine is an important silver producer and has produced 670,100 kg of silver since 1947."

The purpose of wrapping ball mills with thermal/acoustic blankets is twofold: 1) to maintain the desired temperature inside the mill, and 2) to reduce the sound emanating from the mill. This field case study focuses solely on the latter, evaluating and documenting the sound level reduction attributed to the installation of the blankets on ball mills and its potential to reduce the noise dose experienced by the process attendant. One of the three ball mills had already been treated (baseline) before the evaluation started. However, treating the remaining two mills still proved to be very effective, further reducing ball mill noise in the near field by as much as 10.0 dBA and producing far field noise reductions of 3.0 dBA or greater, extending as far as 35 feet from the mills and to the floor above. The model developed from the survey data shows that a process attendant spending a substantial portion of a shift in the mill building will experience a significant reduction in overall noise dose.
