The beneficiation study of low quality pyrophyllite is conducted to enhance the value of it by selective grinding. In mining stage, the main gangue mineral is quartz, and the content of quartz in ore has an adverse effect on the quality of pyrophyllite. Using the huge difference in hardness between quartz and pyrophyllite, the selective grinding is accomplished using stirred ball mill. As a result, a finer pyrophyllite particle can be easily separated from coarser quartz particle by simple size classification, and the content of Al2O3 of fine particle smaller than 45um increased largely. It means that the pyrophyllite particle is ground selectively compared to the quartz particle, and the quality of pyrophyllite is enhanced.

"This paper presents case histories of driven concrete pile damage detected with dynamic testing methods utilizing strain gages and accelerometers embedded in the pile at the prestressing yard during pile construction. Data from the embedded instrumentation is compared with data taken with external bolt on instrumentation and other test methods such as low strain testing on the same pile. In the most severe cases, the piles were extracted revealing and corroborating the embedded data collector results.INTRODUCTIONDynamic testing of driven pile foundations was originally developed in the late 1960’s and commercialized in the early 1970’s. While the methods of analyzing dynamic test data have improved with the advancement of computer technology, the test method and the sensors used to acquire the data have changed little. In 1998, under a research grant provided by the Florida Department of Transportation, (McVay et al, 2002) an Embedded Data Collector system (EDC) was developed. The collector utilizes two sensor packs, each consisting of one strain gage and one accelerometer, embedded near the pile toe and pile top. Utilizing the toe sensor pack, the system provides reliable real time pile end bearing capacity measurements. This end bearing capacity is combined with a Case Method Solution augmented with an automatic damping calculation to provide the overall pile capacity, pile skin friction capacity and pile end bearing capacity. Also, since the gages are embedded, they have the ability to track all changes from the casting yard (i.e. prestress), driving, and subsequent setup (freeze, relaxation, etc) at both the top and bottom of the pile."

Cold rolling is one of the most important techniques in metal forming since the cold rolling products are almost finished product, The product quality of this process is widely influenced by friction in the roll gap; therefore, controlling the friction and other parameters affecting the cold rolling is very important in order to have a product with high quality, Among the cold rolling parameters, the pressure distribution or friction hill within the roll gap is known as the most significant one, In this study, a new software (Matroll), is introduced which can determine the coefficient of friction (COF) and plot the friction hills for an industrial mill, Besides, based on rolling equations, it offers about 25 rolling parameters as outputs. To verify the software operation, the real industrial rolling data was used as inputs, The results (outputs) are in good agreements with the findings of other researchers, The COF values are very reasonable, The friction hill shows that COF is not constant over the whole arc of contact.

Two flat-lying trona seams 3-to 3.5-m thick, approximately 10 m apart, and at depths of 250 m are mined by room-and-pillar at OCI's Big Island Mine in Wyoming. Continuous miners and a yielding pillar system have contributed to improvements in resource recovery and productivity. Long-term stability with minimal subsidence is needed for a large portion of the mine beneath the Green River channel. This was investigated by computer modeling in 1990. Although results of the study indicated good long-term stability, recommendations were made for stress determinations to verify the model. Stress determinations made in 1997 showed pillar stresses 10% to 20% higher than the model stresses, and barrier pillar stresses 10% to 15% lower. This implies that higher panel stresses will be transmitted from the upper to the lower seam. A stability evaluation of the lower seam is planned before two-seam mining to assess entry widths and support requirements.

"Fe-Ga alloys have a large low-field magnetostriction and these alloys are attractive candidates in energy conversion and harvesting applications. Small additions of W also increase the magnetostriction of Fe. In this paper changes in magnetostriction by W substitution for Ga in various Fe-x at.% Ga alloys are presented. Fe-Ga-W single crystals were grown using vertical Bridgman Growth technique. [001]-orientated single crystal samples were prepared with faces within 1 degree off <100> orientation. The samples were annealed at 1150 °C in the alpha-phase region and water quenched. The magnetostriction coefficient (3/2)A-100 measurements were made on these Fe-Ga-W single crystals. The result on the effects of W substitution and annealing on the magnetostrictive behavior of these alloys are discussed.*Support of this work by NSF-DMR under the award DMR-0854166 is gratefully acknowledged.IntroductionMagnetostrictive materials changes their dimension exhibit reversible strains and changes in elastic properties in the presence of an applied magnetic field or the reciprocal effect of changes in the magnetic properties with the application of stress [IJ and are very important in sensor, actuator device, linear motor, magnetomechanical devices, microelectro- mechanical devices, active vibration dampening devices application areas. The discovery of an order of magnitude enhancement in the magnetostriction of Fe with Ga addition coupled with low saturation magnetic fields, and excellent mechanical properties opened up the possibility of obtaining larger magnetostriction values in other low-cost ductile a-Fe phase based alloys with alloying additives that are less expensive than rareearths such as Tb and Dy [2·4l_ The magnetostriction values observed in Fe-Ga single crystals are sensitive to thermal history and composition. The formation of second short range ordering phases and local defects inside crystal structure can also cause a dramatic change to this alloy's magnetostriction behavior [5-9l_"

CONSIDERING the two great interests of to-day, in iron upon the one hand and steel upon the other, and recognizing with measurable distinctness the peculiar fitness of each for special services to which they are applied, the proposition to unite the two metals in combination, to bring into simultaneous use the peculiar advantages which each offers, has great attractions. The limited success which has been attained by trying to bring about such combinations of the two metals through the use of fluxes in welding, has led to the general adoption of the opinion that an effective union of the two metals is impracticable, or to the view that if practicable it would have but limited commercial value. Such opinions are, I think, premature and erroneous, and having gained some knowledge of the character and value of the "Wheeler process" for welding iron and steel without the use of fluxes, I submit the following observations and opinions of the matter for your information, with the hope of eliciting such a discussion of the subject as it may require. The principle of the invention is to bring the two metals simultaneously to a welding heat in one pile, and then to manipulate it.

The impetus for change is further catalysed by shifting consumer preferences, workforces in flux and regional Australians questioning what the transition means for their local community. We need innovative approaches to take a leading role in the industry and support global efforts more broadly. Co-designing an ambitious, shared vision spanning projects, operations and legacy assets with all key parties is a fundamental step to unlock and realise maximum societal, environmental, economic and reputational value. Serious play and gamification can further enhance this visioning process.

The Captain North Extension deposit consists of five sulfide lenses hosted in cherty and chloritic metasediment that is bounded by quartz-eye rhyolite and laminated rhyolite. Lens 2 consists of sphalerite and galena with silver-rich tetrahedrite in chert. Lens 3 contains massive pyrite, with chalcopyrite and minor gold, gradational to minor pyrite in a chloritic metasediment. The other lenses are unexplored. The sulfides occur as beds, fracture infills, and disseminated grains. Reserves are estimated at 207 555 tonnes grading 7.380/0 Zn, 2.76% Pb, and 91.81 g/t Ag. The deposit is isoclinally folded, dips steeply west, plunges 50 degrees south, and is faulted out to the north, where drag folding has reversed the plunge. Minor cross-faults contain talc and sericite. High sphalerite but low pyrite abundances result in poor responses to standard electromagnetic techniques. Lens 3, which contains more pyrite than Lens 2, responds better to induced polarization and allows detection. Geochemical anomalies are found in a nearby swamp and stream, but an impervious till cover inhibits the development of soil anomalies.

"Mapping of hydrothermally altered areas, which are usually associated with mineralization, is essential in mineral exploration. In this research, open source reflectance spectroscopy data from the multispectral moderate-resolution Landsat 8 satellite was used to map altered rocks in the Gauteng and Mpumalanga provinces of South Africa. The unique spectral reflectance and absorption characteristics of remotely sensed Landsat data in the visible, near-infrared (NIR), shortwave-infrared (SWIR) and thermal infrared (TIR) regions of the electromagnetic spectrum were used in different digital image processing techniques. The band ratios (red/blue, SWIR 2/NIR, SWIR 1/NIR), spectral band combinations (Kaufmann ratio, Sabins ratio) and principal component analysis (Crosta technique) were applied to efficiently and successfully map hydrothermal alteration minerals. The results showed that the combination of spectral bands and the principal component analysis method is effective in delineating mineral alteration through remotely sensed satellite data. The validation of results by using the published mineral maps of the Council for Geoscience South Africa showed a good relationship with the identified zones of mineralization. The methodology developed in this study is cost-effective and time-saving, and can be applied to inaccessible and/or new areas with limited ground-based knowledge to obtain reliable and up-to-date mineral information.IntroductionMany developing nations depend on exploration and exploitation of mineral resources to sustain their economic growth. Usually, the traditional mineral exploration techniques require enormous finances, prolonged time, and tremendous manpower, particularly in areas that are not easily reachable (Maduaka, 2014). Furthermore, mineral exploration required state-of-the-art techniques and expertise along with geological, geochemical, and geophysical datasets, which may not be easily available or may be lacking where access is problematic (Kaiser et al., 2002; Bemis et al., 2014). Modern remote sensing technology has proved to be one of the highly efficient and robust techniques used for mineral exploration. The use of remote sensing satellite images for geological mapping and mineral exploration usually involves studying the physicochemical properties of rocks and weathering soils, such as mineralogy, landforms, geochemical signatures, and the spatiall distribution of lineaments (Bhattacharya et al., 2012)."

"A computational method based on a continuum-mechanical approach to simulate rock cutting is developed and evaluated. The aim is to obtain the local loading acting at the cutting pick during operation. The explicit FEM is chosen to model the pick-rock interaction. The presented method takes advantage of (i) an advanced material model (ii) a robust contact algorithm and (iii) fast calculations due to parallelization. A damage-plasticity law is chosen and modified with user-subroutines. A user integrated element deletion routine evades critical mesh distortions. Infinite elements at the model boundaries avoid unrealistic deformation wave reflection.INTRODUCTIONExcavation in mining and tunneling is a costly and complex process. Special equipment such as the roadheader (fig. 1) is employed to cut the rock in the excavation process but high material strengths limit their usability (Tockner 1999). Nowadays a challenge is to extend their field of application to harder and more abrasive rock materials. The forces on the pick (fig. 2) are of great importance and determine wear and especially the efficiency of the machine. Figure 2 shows the principle of cutting and the predominant forces. The variation of pick geometry, cutting depth or attack angle will result in an alteration of these forces and determine the efficiency of the process (Tockner 1999). The mechanisms of rock cutting follow the principle of indentation (Kou et al. 1999). Directly under the indenter a hydrostatic stress state evolves causing the material to fail only due to crushing and fragmentation mechanisms. In the close surroundings large strains emerge and tensile cracks are formed but in a further distance the material behaves elastically."

"The cost of energy is a growing factor in the cost of zinc production. Electrowinning from sulphate solutions with periodical reverse current or from acidic chloride or alkaline solutions could be the way to lower costs. A comparison of the energy consumption for electrolysis shows that the alkaline solution may be considered the most promising alternative. IntroductionZinc electrowinning from sulphate solutions is a very energy intensive process (typical specific energy usage : around 3.1 kWh / kg zinc). This energy consumption represents 35% of the total cost of electrolysis and is the most important cost component.In order to lower costs, the energy efficiency of the sulphate process should be improved or alternative processes should be developed. In this laboratory, that objective has resulted in research on electro winning in sulphate solutions with the use of periodical reverse current (PRC) and in acidic chloride and alkaline solutions.Some of the results obtained in this laboratory and already published and new experimental results reported in this paper make it possible to present a more critical comparison of the energy consumption of the three processes mentioned.ExperimentalThe experiments at constant current were carried out as described previously. Specific conditions are indicated in Table I. Current efficiencies were obtained by weighing deposits.ResultsThe best energy consumptions for electrolysis obtained in this laboratory for the three media are presented in Table I. More detailed results can be found in the papers already mentioned."

Arsenopyrite is often associated with sulphides like pyrite, chalcopyrite and galena in refrac-tory gold ores. Selective flotation of arsenopyrite from associated sulphides is desirable for effective gold extraction when the gold is preferentially associated with the arsenopyrite matrix. By contrast, presence of arsenopyrite in flotation tailings poses a serious environmental threat due to arsenic dissolution. To prevent arsenic contamination from the mine wastes, it would be more economical and environmentally beneficial to remove this mineral during the froth flotation step. Use of Acidithiobacillus thiooxidans in the detoxification of arsenic containing sulphides is outlined in this pa-per. Biomodulation using Acidithiobacillus thiooxidans resulted in the preferential depression of pyrite from arsenopyrite. By suitable conditioning with cells and collector effective separation of arsenopyrite from pyrite was achieved. Biomodulation with wild cells did not yield separation of arsenopyrite from chalcopyrite. However, bacterial affinity could be induced to a desired sulfide mineral through environmentally controlled adaptation techniques. Through the use of arsenic-adapted bacterial cells, selective removal of arsenopyrite from chalcopyrite was readily achieved.

A new technique has been developed for comprehensively recovering tantalum niobium tungsten ore by adoption of stage grinding, stage separation, combination of flotation and gravity separation, gravity separation for coarse particles, flotation for fine ones, combination of ore-dressing and hydrometallurgy. The new type and high efficiency combinative collector mainly composed of benzyl hydroxamic acid is firstly used to treat tantalum niobium and tungsten slime, besides the new type equipment for gravitational separation ?YTF-C shaking table for fine particles is adopted to treat flotation rough concentrate, hence having notably enhanced both recovery and concentrate grade of fine tantalum niobium and tungsten minerals. The commercial test obtains the tantalum concentrate assaying Ta2O5 31.98% with recovery 43.44% and tungsten product assaying WO3 89.40% with recovery 76.02%. The developed technique provides a reliable approach and an effective way for comprehensive utilization of lean fine complex refractory tantalum niobium tungsten ore resource.

The age hardening behavior of an Fe-8Ni-13Mo alloy was studied after the matrix had been varied to produce either ferrite, cold u~orked ferrite, or nzassive nzartensite. The aging behavior of the cold worked ferrite and murtensite structures were very similar. The martensite aging kinetics were much different from those observed in earlier studies of aging of maraging steels, even though the martensite wzatri.r had the same dislocation structure as those found in maraging steels. The results suggest that the previously observed precipitation kinetics of maraging steels ?nay have been controlled by the nucleation be-haviov, which in turn were dictated by the alloy compositions and the resultant identities of the precipitating phases. IT is well known that the rate of precipitation from solid solution depends not only on the degree of super-saturation, but also on the density and distribution of dislocations in the matrix structure. These imperfections often act as nucleation sites, and may also enhance atomic mobility. &apos;Thus, the presence of dislocations is important since the type and distribution of precipitates may be determined by them. The precipitate density and morphology in turn affects the mechanical properties of the alloy. A number of studies have been devoted to the precipitation characteristics in various types of maraging steels.&apos;-" These are iron-base alloys containing 10 to 25 pct Ni along with other substitutional elements such as Mo, Ti, Al, and so forth, that are used to produce age hardening. The carbon contents of these steels are quite low, and carbide precipitation is not believed to play any significant role in the aging reactions. After solution annealing and cooling these alloys generally transfclrm to a bcc lath or massive martensite structure characterized by elongated martensite platelets that are separated from each other by low angle boundaries, and that contain a very high dislocation den~it~.~~~~~~~~-~~ Age hardening is then conducted at temperatures on the order of 800" to 1000°F to produce substitutional element precipitation within the massive martensite matrix. Most of the aging studies to date have revealed several common traits in these alloys, regardless of the particular identity of the precipitation elements. Generally hardening has been found to be extremely rapid, with incubation times that approach zero. The agng kinetics, at least up to the time when reversion of the martensite matrix to austenite begins to predominate, frequently follow a AX/~~ = ktn type law, where x is hardness or electrical resistivity, t is the time, and k and n are constants. The values of n are frequently on the order of 0.2 to 0.5, which are well below the idealized values of n based on diffusion controlled precipitate growth models. Finally, the observed activation energy values are typically on the order of 30 kcal per mole, and thus are well below the nominal value of about 60 kcal per mole found for substitutional element diffusion in ferrite. The common explanation of these observations is that the precipitation kinetics are controlled by the massive martensite matrix structure. Thus, the absence of any noticeable incubation time has been attributed, after ~ahn," to the fact that the precipitate nucleation on dislocations may occur without a finite activation energy barrier. The low values of the activation energy are generally assumed to be due to enhanced diffusivity in the highly faulted structure. If this explanation that the precipitation kinetics are dominated by the matrix structure is correct then one should observe a distinct difference in lunetics between aging in a martensitic matrix and aging the same alloy when it has a ferritic matrix. Such a comparison cannot be made with conventional maraging compositions, but could be made with the alloy used in the present study. In addition, the ferritic structure of the present alloy could be cold worked to produce a high dislocation density so that one could determine whether ferrite in this condition would age similarly to martensite. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The composition of the alloy used in this study was 8.1 pct Ni, 13.0 pct Mo, 0.10 pct Al, 0.13 pct Ti, 0.012 pct C, bal Fe. The alloy was prepared as a 40 lb vacuum induction melt. The heat was homogenized and hot forged at 2100°F to 2 by 2 in. bar, and then hot rolled at 1900°F to $ in. bar stock. The aging lunetics were followed by Rockwell C hardness and electrical resistivity measurements. Samples for hardness testing were prepared as small strips approximately 2 by $ by 4 in. thick. Electrical resistivity was studied on cylindrical samples approximately 2 in. long by 0.1 in. diam. The method for making the alloy either martensitic or ferritic was based on the fact that the alloy showed a closed y loop type of phase diagram. At high temperatures, above approximately 24003F, the alloy was entirely ferritic. Small samples on the order of the dimensions described above remained entirely ferritic after iced-brine quenching from this temperature. In practice, a heat treatment of 1 hr in an inert atmosphere at 2500°F followed by water quenching was used to produce the ferritic microstructure. This paper is the third of a series of reports on asbestos prepared by the Bureau of Mines. The reports already issued contain general information, including descriptions of deposits throughout the world.3/ The present paper deals chiefly with milling and marketing. Many grades of asbestos are marketed, and an important phase of milling is the grading of fiber; these subjects therefore are related so intimately that contiguity in their treatment is fully justified. Although the Bureau of Mines is interested primarily in the mining and preparation of raw materials, the fabrication of asbestos products has attained such importance in the United States that brief reference to processes of manufacture is included. CLASSIFICATION OF FIBER Canadian asbestos fibers are divided into three main groups - crudes, mill fibers, and shorts. The term "crude" is applied to fiber of spinning grade measuring three eighths inch or longer, that is. hand-cobbed and not passed through a mill. Mill fibers are obtained by crushing and beating the fiber-bearing" rock, until the, asbestos is freed and, then removing the fiber from the rock by screening or air separation. Shorts are the lowest grades of mill products.

INTRODUCTION "Most people would probably agree that some degree of government control and regulation is essential in modern society, and it will likely continue as an important part of our social organization for the foreseeable future. But most of us tend to be ambivalent about it. In one situation or another we are likely to see government commitment to social benefit programs or regulatory devices either as an expanding encroachment on the freedom of the individual or as an undue interference with private enterprise or with the rules of the market place. But even where there is agreement as to the desirability of government initiatives, either in general or in a particular context, it by no means follows that there will be approval of the mechanisms or procedures used or the means of carrying them out." The above statement is taken from a 1980 Working Paper of the Law Reform Commission of Canada prepared in connection with its study of the exercise of administrative law in Canada and the practices and procedures of administrative tribunals. The Atomic Energy Control Board (AECB) is one such administrative tribunal, and as the federal nuclear regulatory authority, it is responsible for licensing the production, possession and use of nuclear materials, equipment and facilities and enforcing compliance with licence conditions governing the health, safety, security and environmental aspects of the activities involved. Although the AECB was established 35 years ago with the passage in August 1946 of the Atomic Energy Control Act, like many administrative tribunals its role and functions and the regulatory process which it applies have evolved significantly during this period. The changes which have taken place over the years reflect not only the vast scientific and technological developments which have occurred but also the marked differences between contemporary society and the social milieu of the mid-1940s. However, the basic philosophy of nuclear regulation in Canada and the underlying principles of the regulatory process have changed very little. Certainly, the process is far more open in terms of the general public, it has become appreciably more comprehensive and systematic in terms of the depth and extent of both the pre- and post-licensing technical evaluations which are conducted and the ensuing compliance program. Furthermore, it now applies to the whole of the nuclear fuel cycle as well as the industrial, agricultural and medical applications of radionuclides. Nevertheless the following fundamental principles remain unchanged: a. primary responsibility for achieving high standards of nuclear safety and environmental protection in the design, construction, commissioning and operation of nuclear facilities resides with the licensee; b. the credibility of the nuclear regulatory process depends not only upon its technical correctness and practicability, but also upon acceptance by the public-at-large of its perceived effectiveness and efficiency; c. regulatory criteria and principles should be concise, clearly stated and understandable; d. regulatory decision-making should be based upon stated criteria and principles taking into account pertinent scientific and technical facts only; e. fairness and impartiality must characterize all regulatory decision-making; f. the regulatory process should be subject to a comprehensive periodic review and evaluation to ensure that it continues to produce the desired results at justified costs. EXPLANATORY NOTES The mere statement of a set of principles is a relatively simple task. Far more difficult is the explanation of what these principles mean in practical terms. To stipulate that a licensee bears the primary responsibility for achieving and maintaining high standards of nuclear safety and environmental protection may be regarded by some as an attempt by the regulatory agency to evade the responsibilities assigned to it. However, this is not the case. It is unrealistic for anyone to claim that a licensee only complies with accepted norms of public and occupational health and safety and of environmental protection because of the fear of prosecution. Fwe 3 m (10 ft) diameter Microcel™ flotation columns were installed at Clinchfield Coal Company&apos;s Middle Fork preparation facility in order to reduce product ash and increase recovery and plant capacity. The Middle Fork facility is utilized for the recovery of fine coal from a feed stream that consists primarily of 1 .5 mm x 0 material. The columns replaced conventional flotation cells for the treatment of the minus 150 pm fraction while spirals are used to upgrade the plus 150 pm material in the plant feed. The addition of the column flotation circuit resulted in an increase in plant capacity in excess of 20 percent while reducing the flotation product ash content by approximately 7 percentage points. Flotation circuit combustible recovery was increased by 17 percentage points. This paper discusses circuit design, commissioning, and sparging system design. Circuit instrumentation, level control, reagent system control, performance comparisons with conventional flotation, and general operating procedures are also discussed.

Pyrometallurgy has played a very important role in southern Africa for at least four centuries. It continues to do so, and recent years have seen many exciting developments in pyrometallurgical technology. The wonderfully diverse rich mineral deposits in this area of the world have provided some unique opportunities for industrial processes to be established. The ?Southern African Pyrometallurgy 2006? conference was set up to showcase southern African pyrometallurgical operations, and to provide a forum for the exchange of ideas between people working at various types of smelters. Papers have been obtained from a wide variety of pyrometallurgical plants in southern Africa. These descriptions of plant operations (as well as some history, and highlights of current work) will provide useful reference information for some time to come. Contributions are also included from universities, research organizations, and engineering companies, so that the full spectrum of pyrometallurgical activities can be covered. The plant descriptions will be published on a website, where they can be updated as and when required, with the eventual goal of having a description of every smelter in the region. The conference venue was selected to be the &apos;Cradle of Humankind&apos; world heritage area, about 40 km from Johannesburg. Not only does this keep the conference within easy reach of the city and yet far enough out into the countryside to allow people to focus on the conference, it is also within easy reach of many pyrometallurgical plants. There is a particular significance to the choice of location, in that the Swartkrans area close to the Sterkfontein Caves is the site of the earliest evidence of the deliberate controlled use of fire by human beings (about 1.3 million years ago), and this is obviously a necessary precursor to pyrometallurgy. The area also lends itself to a very wide range of outdoor, social, and cultural activities to supplement the technical content of the programme. It is hoped that activities such as a hot air balloon safari and visits to the world-renowned Sterkfontein Caves and Wonder Cave will help to make the conference a memorable one for those able to attend. I trust that the ongoing value of the papers and presentations will make all the hard work of the many contributors most worthwhile.
