The Cawse nickel-cobalt operation is situated 50 km NW of Kalgoorlie in Western Australia, at latitude30o22'30'' south and longitude 121o08'30'' east on the Kalgoorlie 1:250 000 geological map sheet (SH 51-9) (see Figure 1). The project is owned and operated by Centaur Nickel Pty Ltd (CTR) and was the first in Australia to commercially produce nickel metal and cobalt sulphide through pressure acid leach (PAL) technology. Cawse has a total resource base (all categories of resources + reserves) of 213 million tonnes Mt at 0.7 per cent Ni and 0.04 per cent Co, comprising 127 Mt at Cawse Central which is 100 per cent owned by CTR and 86 Mt at Cawse Extended where CTR has a 80 per cent equity. Cawse Extended is located immediately to the northwest of the Cawse Central leases. All current reserves (proved and probable) of 30 Mt at 1.0 per cent nickel are contained within Cawse Central. In addition the Siberia project area 20 kilometres to the NW has a resource of 63 Mt at 0.7 per cent Ni. Cawse is a dry laterite deposit, with nickel and cobalt hosted by iron and manganese oxides. Cawse Central mineralisation extends over a ten kilometre strike length, with three pits currently being mined. The Bunyip pit has the premier nickel and cobalt grades within Cawse Central. There are seven dominant lithology types forming mappable units within current pit exposures. Four of these units are host to nickel and cobalt mineralisation. Ore types are defined as Upgrade, Grind and Non-upgrade, depending on their physical characteristics with respect to the treatment route. Mining commenced in February 1998. To the end of calender 1999 the operation has produced 2100 tonnes nickel plate and 470 tonnes of cobalt as a cobalt sulphide product. Future production will target 9000 tonnes per annum Ni metal and up to 2000 tonnes per annum Co, based on processing 500 000 tonnes of ore per annum.

The Northern Sewerage Project (NSP) is an upgrade to one of MelbourneÆs ageing, under-capacity trunk sewers. It will reduce the volume and frequency of wet-weather overflows to the Merri and Moonee Ponds Creeks and facilitate new housing developments in the northern suburbs of the city. A total of 12.4 km of tunnel and eight vertical access shafts will be excavated as part of the two project stages: Stage 1 (NSP1) will be owned and operated by Melbourne Water (MW) and Stage 2 (NSP2) will be owned and operated by Yarra Valley Water (YVW). The owners require the project to have a service life of 100 years, a requirement significantly beyond many of the current Australian Standards, which aim to achieve service lives greater than 60 years but are typically assumed to achieve 40 to 60 years. Because of the potentially corrosive natures of the external environment along the tunnels and the internal sewer environment, durability was a key concern for NSP1 and NSP2. Stringent specifications were applicable to the tunnel lining systems. This paper describes the corrosive environments impacting NSP1 and NSP2, explains the key design differences between the two stages and details the lining systems considered and selected to achieve the clientsÆ desired 100-year service life. The project design is complete and construction began in 2007.

With depletion of higher grade iron ore reserves, and the need to process finer, lower grade material; there is a need to better understand the recovery efficiency of jigging process. The use of Positron Emission Particle Tracking (PEPT) was examined as a technique, to study the motion of particles inside a laboratory batch jig. PEPT is a noninvasive method that can provide three dimensional kinetic data of a particle during jigging. Particles with different densities and sizes were traced under the same jigging parameters, to obtain a data set that can be used for the development and verification of jigging models. From the results, detailed information on the stratification rate of a particle was obtained, with adequate resolution to see particle movement through an individual pulse. Two problems perplex many coal-mine operators and employees. Is coal-mine dust harmful to breathe; and, if so, is it possible to keep the concentration below the danger point? The medical profession is not unanimous in its opinion of the danger of breathing bituminous-coal dust, but there appears to be ample and increasing evidence that coal-mine dust can be harmful if breathed in large enough doses for long periods. The question of controlling the dust at the point of formation is still unanswered in the minds of many in the mining industry. However, results of limited studies conducted by the Bureau of Mines in 9 bituminous-coal mines indicate that a full-shift average exposure of workers should not exceed about 20 million dust particles per cubic foot of air (m.p.p.c.f.) and that concentrations can be held within this limit without too much difficulty. Furthermore, these studies indicated that an exposure in the neighborhood of 40 m.p.p.c.f. should not be exceeded for an individual operation and that it is possible to hold within this ceiling.

As amostras foram recozidas com diferentes temperaturas de recozimento final, resultando em diferentes tamanhos de grão. As perdas histeréticas e B50 foram medidos. Os resultados de B50 mostraram que não houve variação de textura entre as ligas com diferentes %Si. Por fim, os resultados não mostraram variações da energia dissipada pela perda histerética com adição de %Si.

"A portion of the roof for a 129 x 144-inch, nearly 100-year-old sewer outfall in the City of Baltimore had deteriorated to the point that it resulted in the development of a large sinkhole in a residential neighborhood. A subsequent video inspection of the sewer outfall indicated that there was a hole in the sewer outfall, and it would need to be repaired . After initial backfilling of the sinkhole and repairs to the water service lines, a conventional wood shoring system was used to support the excavation and expose the Main Outfall Sewer to inspect and repair it. This excavation was unsuccessful because of loose sandy soils and high groundwater conditions. An innovative use of a steel reinforced jet grout excavation support system was ultimately used to underpin an adjacent 20-inch water main and other nearby utilities, and provide access to the top of the Main Outfall Sewer some 22 feet below the street surface to facilitate inspection and repair of the sewer. This excavation support system was also successfully utilized in the final repair of the sewer roof by serving as a buttress for the new roof system.1.0 IntroductionThe project site is located in a residential neighborhood with brick masonry row houses situated on the south side of Chase Street and a brick masonry church on the north side of the street. Figure 1 illustrates the location of the site. The City right of way is 65 feet wide, and the street is 40 feet curb to curb. The centerline of the Main Outfall Sewer runs parallel to and a few feet south from the centerline of the street. Other utilities running parallel to the street include a cast iron 20-inch water line built about 1910, a 24-inch terra cotta storm drain, a 6-inch terra cotta sanitary sewer, a 4-inch cast iron gas line and a 40-inch electrical duct. Cross utilities included a 4-inch gas line and several smaller water and gas service lines to the church and row houses. One gas line that was not shown in the City's GIS database was exposed during the excavation."

Lime and cement manufacturing has a proud history in Otago, with the earliest lime kilns appearing around 1849 at Caversham and Kaikorai in Dunedin . At Dunback or Makareao (to be precise) three well-type kilns were built by the government in 1899. In 1909 these kilns were leased to the then Milburn Lime and Cement Company. They erected a large brick Schmatolla kiln in 1909, elliptical in plan and fired by coal gas. The kiln operated up until 1944 before being left derelict. The quarry which supplied the kiln also supplied the Burnside Cement works from 1929 up until its closure in 1988. The quarry was shifted to the top of the hill in the 1950s.

The effects of ultrasonic radiation on the electrodeposition of copper-zinc, copper-cadmium, and copper-tin alloys from cyanide baths were investigated by the Bureau of Mines at frequencies of 18.5 and 38 kilocycles per second, and at acoustic intensities up to 0.5 watt per cm3. Significant changes occurred in the composition of the deposited alloys; some of these deposits were brighter, harder, more adherent, or of finer grain size than nonirradiated deposits. The irradiated deposits were also smoother and less porous, and they afforded better corrosion protection for the substrate metal in sodium chloride solution. The limiting current densities of the cyanide baths were increased by the application of ultrasonics. Anode and cathode current efficiencies also were increased, and cell voltages were lowered; the relationship of these effects to current density is discussed. Electrode potential measurements showed significant depolarization effects at both electrodes during ultrasonic irradiation. The resulting decrease in cell voltage was due chiefly to depolarization at the anode, and the anode became less passive.

This paper concerns the optimum arrangement of the buoyancy module, which is used for stable dynamic motion and structure stability of the marine flexible riser. The main method of this study is simulation-based design using Genetic Algorithm (G.A) for optimum design and Multi-body dynamic for simulation. The marine riser connects the vessel and the seabed-tracked vehicle. The motion of the riser affects the motion of the vessel and the vehicle. In this study, a marine riser of the deep-seabed integrated mining system (Figure 1) is used. This riser has a strong effect on efficient transfer of minerals. So, the buoyancy module must be equipped to supplement problems of the structure stability and the dynamic motion. Positions and quantities of the equipping buoyancy modules are determined by the at sea experiment (Figure 2). But this method is not easy because the actual sea experiment is expensive, time-consuming and dangerous (Figure 3). Thus, the position and quantity must be determined by simulation-based design. The dynamic analysis models of the riser and the buoyancy module were built in the commercial software DAFUL. In the marine environment, factors affecting behavior are current, drag force, etc.

The stability of floors of large drydocks and wagon tipper sheds at coal terminals is an important matter but quite difficult to solve. Anchors can be used to join floors to foundations thus ensuring the stability of floors by the self-weight of floors and the pull of anchors. In this paper, the author describes the structures and types of the anchors used in the floors of the drydock in Beihai Shipyard and the wagon tipper shed at Shijiu Port, both in Shandong Province China, the determination of bearing capacity of anchors in rock bed of highly weathered granite, the comparison between prestressed anchors and non-prestressed anchors, the construction technology of anchors and the analysis of field experimental data.

Na busca de novas tecnologias para o processo de sinterização de minério de ferro, a recirculação dos gases de saída do processo podem proporcionar algumas vantagens em relação ao processo convencional. Para tal estudo, foi utilizado um modelo multi-fásico de sinterização para a avaliação da recirculação dos gases de saída do processo. Foram analisados cinco casos de recirculação dos gases de saída, do processo de sinterização, visando, sempre uma operação estável do processo. Os resultados de simulação indicam alargamento da frente de combustão com a recirculação dos gases de saída e a possibilidade da redução do consumo do combustível sólido. Como resultado, houve aumento da fração de cálcio-silicatos, proporcionando melhoria da redutibilidade do sínter, além da redução da emissão de CO2 e PCDD/Fs na máquina de sínter.

"The ore currently being milled at Delnite is a high pyrrhotite ore with the gold intimately associated with the pyrrhotite. To get maximum recovery of the gold with the lowest reagent cost, it is necessary to keep the pH as low as possible In the laboratory the best results were obtained with a pH of 10 but in the plant it was found that a pH of 11 was the minimum practical pH. With the n1anual control it was difficult to maintain this figure.The Mines Branch had a conductivity probe (see Fig. 1), developed by Dr. G .G. Eichholz that they wished to try out in plant operation.On June 17, 1963, the probe with all necessary control equipment was installed in the regrind circuit (see Fig. 2) at Delnite Mines. Crushed quick lime is fed at this point but it is also necessary to feed hydrated li1ne at two other points in the cyanide circuit in order to maintain the pH close to 11. 0 throughout the circuit. Only the feeding of the quick lime at the regrind mill was controlled in this test.One thing that concerned me with the operation of the probe was whether the reading on the probe chart would correspond to the pH. A look at the graph accompanying this paper will show that except for very minor variations the graphs of the chart reading and the pH reading are parallel. The upper graph shows that the pH reading and the lime titrations also correspond and that the cyanide titrations appear to have little effect on the pH reading.Table 1 gives the results obtained for the two months before and after the instal1ation of automatic control as well as the two months of control. Unfortunately there was a decided change in ore just after the automatic controls were removed. There was much less pyrrhotitc in the ore than usual thus changing the need for lime and cyanide."

The design of solvent extraction plants has been generally based on the assumption of steady operating conditions in both the settler and the mixer units. However, recent experience in both large and small plants has shown this not to be the case. Mixer transients include start up aqueous locking and partial phase separation in secondary mixers, which both lead to reduced plant capacity or overflow of upstream mixers. Analysis of the hydraulic pressure profiles has generated new design methods to eliminate the effects of the partial or complete phase separation. Changes to the method of specification and selection of primary and secondary mixers have been made to eliminate the onset of partial separation during operation. The observation of settler operation has shown that it is also a dynamic process, even under "steady-state" conditions. Four transient phenomena have been identified that lead to internal circulating flows, poor disengagement of fine secondary haze and erratic and high entrainment levels in the discharges. A, first approximation analysis has shown that there are significant pressure differentials within settlers, and these change along the length and with the phase separation rates. A technique to control the effects of these transients was developed that allows plant performance to be improved beyond "standard" expectations. BEEDON AND C. J. JONKER* Dr Bleloch's paper has outlined the advantages of recycling stack-gas of low nitrogen content in the blast furnace. In the first instance it would appear to be extremely beneficial in controlling the hearth temperature and allowing a 100 per cent oxygen-blast to be used. On a second point however we have to disagree. It is claimed that heat is liberated in the combustion zones by the oxidation of CO to CO2 near the tuyeres and in the subsequent reduction of the CO2 by CO. The author has hypothesized as follows, and we quote: 'The C+CO2=2 CO reaction in the outer combustion zone at about 1 700°C is no longer endothermic due to loss of stability of CO2 and its consequent dissociation into CO and free oxygen.' This statement requires closer examination. If we consider the individual events occurring with the CO in the recycled topgas, with the oxygen in the blast and with the coke in the burden, as done by Dr Bleloch, the following heat considerations emerge. All heats of reaction are calculated from the enthalpy values of each reactant and product, as well as the temperature dependence of their molar heat capacities. (a) At the tuyeres: CO+1/2 O2-+CO2 . . . . . (1) CO, CO2 at 500°C; O2 at 25°C. ?H reaction = -65 000 cals/mole CO The reaction (1) is exothermic. (b) In the outer combustion zone: CO2+C?2 CO . . . . . . . . (2) C, CO at 1 700°C; CO2 at 500 0C. ?H reaction = -56 000 cals/mole CO Reaction (2) is endothermic. The overall heat gain of reactions (1) and (2) is ?H=+56 000 - 65 000= -9000 cals/mole CO i.e. the overall reaction is slightly exothermic, the amount of heat liberated is however smaller than suggested by Dr Bleloch. (c) The dissociation CO2+CO+1/2 O2 . . . . . (3) is a highly endothermic reaction at 1 700 0C, requiring 82 000 cals/mole CO2 to proceed to completion. Furthermore, this reaction (3) is energetically not favoured to proceed, as can be observed from the free energy-temperature relationship of figure (3), which favours the formation of CO2 at 1 700 0C. Hence direct dissociation of CO2 at 1 700 0C appears to be unlikely.* The concept of recycling topgas is however still intriguing from many other points of view. Apart from providing a very efficient method of hearth temperature control, it will create a much higher CO partial pressure in the stack. Manganese dioxide reacts with sulfur dioxide solution in the absence of oxygen to form manganous ion and dithionate ion, together with a small amount of sulfate ion. The effects of SO, concentration, hydrogen ion concentration, stirring speed, and temperature on the rate of the reaction were studied. If it is assumed that undissociated SO2 molecules react rapidly with MnO, at active surface sites and that bisulfite ions react slowly, an equation can be derived that satisfactorily represents the observed reaction rates. For solutions in which the reaction with undissociated SO2 predominates, reaction rates and activation energies estimated from diffusion theory agree well with those found experimentally. Manganese dioxide dissolves readily in aqueous solutions of sulfur dioxide. The nature of the dissolution reaction was first investigated by Gay-Lussac and welter1 in 1819; they identified a new oxysulfur radical, the dithionate ion, S2O6, as one of the reaction products. Since then, the reaction has become a standard method of preparing dithionates in the laboratory and one of the more promising methods of leaching manganese from low-grade ores. In the "dithionate process" developed by the U.S. Bureau of Mines2,3, manganese-dioxide ore is suspended in a solution of calcium dithionate and leached with gas containing sulfur dioxide. The New Austrian Tunneling Method was, as is well known, developed from conventional rock tunnelling. In Germany about 10 years ago the NATM began to be applied to partially stable soils by incorporated excavation and support methods to allow its use with these soils. The advantages of this tunnelling technique - adaptability, ecomomy, and quality have resulted in its widespread usage. Today, about 85 % of all mined tunnels in Germany are produced with this technology. This rapid development has resulted in about 40 companies operating within a geographical area about the same size as the state of Illinois that are capable of utilizing the NATM. In most cases German contract/award procedures allow the contractor to develop alternate design and plans. As a result of this flexibility and intense competition, safety factors have been gradually reduced to the lower limit of what could be regarded as demonstrably safe, and the utilization of the NATM has expanded to include higher risk conditions, namely * excavating larger cross sections. * working with less overburden. * work undertaken under less stable soil conditions.

"In this study, the rheology of liquid crystalline polymer (LCP) melts through simplified 2-D and 3-D die geometries is simulated using Polyflow™. It is known that rheological properties of LCPs are close to long chain polymers and their directionality is close to those of small molecule liquid crystals (SMLCs). As a result, different rheological models (both viscoelastic and generalized Newtonian) for long chain polymers in Polyflow™ were investigated based on the available capillary rheometer data. By varying the parameters in these models, it is possible to adjust the effect of shear viscosity, normal stress differences and relaxations times on the rheology of the polymer. The free surface of the extrudate coming out of the die is simulated and the amount of die swell for different types of rheological models is compared. This study indicates that the Bird-Carreau model best applies to thermotropic LCP materials as quantified by die swell. Since the rheology of the LCPs affects the orientation of the crystals, the result of this simulation can be further used to predict the orientation of crystallines inside and outside the die.IntroductionAny rod like molecule or crystal tends to orient itself in the direction of shear as it moves within a flow. Since polymers consist of long chains of molecules, they experience the same phenomena when flowing in the melt condition. For most polymers, the molecules change direction and distribute uniformly in space during the solidification. However due to the higher inertia of the crystals in the liquid crystalline polymers, the oriented crystals will keep their order during the solidification and as a result the final product will show anisotropy in material properties."

In the early 1970s, it became a concern that exposure to the mineral fibers associated taconite ore processed in Silver Bay, Minnesota would cause asbestos-related disease including gastrointestinal cancer. At that time data gaps existed which have now been significantly reduced by further research. To further our understanding of the types of airborne fibers in Silver Bay we undertook a geological survey of their source the Peter Mitchell Pit, and found that there are no primary asbestos minerals at a detectable level. However we identified two non-asbestos types of fibrous minerals in very limited geological locales. Air sampling useful for risk assessment was done to determine the type, concentrations and size distribution of the population of airborne fibers around Silver Bay. Approximately 80% of the airborne fibers have elemental compositions consistent with cummingtonite-grunerite and the remaining 20% have elemental compositions in the tremolite-actinolite series. The mean airborne concentration of both fiber types is less than 0.00014 fibers per milliliter that is within the background level reported by the World Health Organization. We calculate the risk of asbestos-related mesothelioma and lung cancer using a variety of different pessimistic assumptions. (i) that all the non-asbestos fibers are as potent as asbestos fibers used in the EPA-IRIS listing for asbestos; with a calculated risk of asbestos-related cancer for environmental exposure at Silver Bay of 1 excess cancer in 28,500 lifetimes (or 35 excess cancers per 1,000,000 lifetimes) and secondly that taconite associated fibers are as potent as chrysotile the least potent form of asbestos. The calculated risk is less than 0.77 excess cancer case in 1,000,000 lifetimes. Finally, we briefly review the epidemiology studies of grunerite asbestos (amosite) focusing on the exposure conditions associated with increased risk of human mesothelioma. © 2008 Elsevier Inc. The Basalt Waste Isolation Project of the U.S. Department of Energy is a part of the National Was re Terminal Storage Program. Its mission is to assess the feasibility of siting a nuclear waste repository in the basalt formations which underlie the Hanford Site of the U.S. Department of Energy. The progress in all program areas is summarized in this paper. Activities conducted to date have led to the identification of possible repository candidate sites within the Hanford Site.
