DISCUSSION I. M. Symonds, (Cia. Minera de Penoles, Monterrey, N. L., Mexico)—Messrs. Boeke and Gunther have written most interesting papers describing their zinc de-leading operations. Mr. Gunther was kind enough to show me his operation last fall. Aside from the excellent results, I was most impressed by the ease of control. I had expected a difficult operation requiring careful control and supervision, but found one requiring little attention. The only disappointing fact of the separation is the poor copper recovery in the concentrate of the delead-ing float. The final zinc concentrate still has about 3 pct chalcopyrite, assuming the copper is chalcopyrite, and adversely affects the zinc grade. If the copper mineral is free, the poor recovery is probably due to the high cyanide concentration. Fortunately, about 75 pct of the copper is recovered before the pulp goes to the zinc circuit. Mr. Gunther's remarks about proper cyanide to zinc sulphate ratios cannot be overemphasized. Although our experience has been confined mostly to the conventional lead-zinc separation, we have found these ratios most important, and more important in the mill than in the laboratory. The laboratory appears to give optimum results over a wider range of reagent control than the mill, especially in regard to the effect of cyanide. In handling relatively high grade ores in the mill we usually find that ratios of cyanide to zinc sulphate of 1 to 10 or 20 or higher work best. Where there is a substantial amount of chalcopyrite present it has been noted that cyanide in the range of 0.02 to 0.10 lb per ton of ore is often beneficial in zinc rejection and possibly in copper recovery in the lead concentrate, while larger amounts, say 0.20 to 0.25 lb per ton, will float more zinc and cause a serious rejection of chalcopyrite. On an ore with 15 to 20 pct zinc content we have had to use 0.8 to 1.2 pounds of zinc sulphate per ton of ore with the above cyanide to obtain optimum results. Some time ago we made a laboratory study following Parral and Santa Barbara practice on an ore which had never a very satisfactory rejection of zinc in the lead concentrate. The results were not encouraging and a mill test was not run. Since then the study has been reopened using in the laboratory fresh zinc concentrate from the mill instead of one made in the laboratory. A reasonably clean lead float from the zinc concentrate was obtained. It has been checked several times and each time the zinc concentrate made in the mill responds and the one made in the labora-

The influence of various elements in retarding or accelerating the absorption of carbon during the process of carburization is fairly well known. In general those elements which form carbides accelerate the absorption, while those which do not retard it. It has sometimes been wrongly stated that those elements which raise the temperature of the critical range increase the absorption, while those which lower this temperature decrease it. Silicon is a notable exception to this rule, for its influence is to raise the critical range but to lower the absorption of carbon. Some elements which do not form carbides have no apparent influence upon the absorption rate. Carbon itself retards the absorption rate. With a view to obtaining more exact data upon the subject the following experiments were undertaken: 208 steels of different chemical composition were selected to represent most of the types of modern constructional steels. Specimens 2 in. in diameter and 9 in. in length were weighed to milligrams. They were then packed in the special carburizing box shown in Fig. 1, and kept in the furnace for 10 hours at a temperature of 900' C. A duplicate experiment was conducted at 1,000° C. At equal intervals of time the box was rotated in the furnace so that two complete revolutions were made in the 10 hours. This precaution was taken to neutralize as much as possible any effect of unequal heating. At the end of the 10 hours the box was allowed to cool in the furnace with the doors open. The specimens were then weighed again and the increased weight (carbon) determined. In the following table are given the analyses of the various steels, together with the increased weight of carbon expressed in milligrams.

STUDY of the plasticity of germanium or other semiconductor crystals affords unusual opportunities to extend our knowledge of deformation mechanisms. Crystals are available having extraordinary perfection and very high purity. They deform by slip on the systems {111} <110>,1-3 as do crystals of the simple face-centered-cubic structure. Dislocations generated in them during slip are easily revealed in the form of etch pits on either (111) or (100) surfaces.4,5 This fact alone makes possible more detailed studies of mechanisms than is usually the case with metals but, even further, the effect of deformation on their electrical conductivity is very large compared with metals. This comes about not only because the mobility of the charge carriers is reduced, as in deformed metals, but also because the number of these carriers is greatly altered. This latter effect seems closely related to the formation of both line and point imperfections during deformation and thus provides a needed tool for the study of the kinds and distributions of these imperfections. Other investigators have deformed germanium at elevated temperatures by bending,1, 6-8 compres-sion,6, 0,10 tension,2,3,6,11,12 torsion,23 and indentation." Wang and Alexander" have also reported successful indentation at room temperature. Dislocation etch pits consequent to deformation have been observed and studied.7,8,10,18,14,20 The experiments to be de- scribed here include principally the compression and the subsequent annealing of germanium with concomitant studies of etch pits, microstructures, and electrical properties. Both single crystals and heavily twinned specimens were used. Some indentation studies are included. Experimental Methods Plastic compression was effected in the apparatus shown schematically in Fig. 1. It consists of two tantalum platens contained in a helium atmosphere and so arranged that pressure can be applied by a hydraulic press. The specimen between the platens is heated by the surrounding furnace. The specimen is usually a small crystal cube about 0.30 in. on an edge. A control specimen is always inserted so, that it is subject to the same thermal cycle as the one being deformed. This serves to detect any impurity contamination that might accompany the thermal treatment. For high temperature work, where such impurity contamination often occurs, the specimens were first plated with gold whenever subsequent electrical properties were to be determined. This method" is effective in preventing significant contamination of germanium up to temperatures at least as high as 750°C, as evidenced by the constancy of the electrical conductivities of control specimens subjected to the same heat treatments. The total range of temperature used for deformation was from 375°C, the lowest at which significant flow was observed, up to 900°C. This paper describes the ventilation planning that was per- formed at the Barrick Gold Corporation, El lndio Mine. The El lndio Mine is located at an elevation of approximately 4,000 m in the Andes mountains east of the coastal city of La Serena, Chile. The ventilation planning program consisted of a detailed ventilation survey of the mine and the establishment of a correlated com- puter model. A series of network simulations were conducted to determine the optimum position, size, and configuration of new ventilation raises and main fan exhaust system. Modifications to existing mine infrastructure including; driving of drifts, slashing of airways, and positioning of ventilation controls were examined. Detailed costing information was developed to optimize the location of the new main exhaust raises and fan system. The final ventilation system is expected to increase the mine airflow from the existing 157 m=/s to over 315 mls. This increase was necessary to accommodate an expansion in mine production, diesel equipment utilization, and deeper mine development. Furthermore, the increased airflow was required because of the de-rating of diesel equipment and large air volumes necessary to dilute diesel exhaust at high elevation.

The regional syndeformational metamorphism affecting the Itabira Iron Formation (IIF) at Quadrilßtero Ferrffero (QF) was formerly discussed by Dorr (1965), who proposed that quartz grain size could monitor the metamorphism, according to James (1955), and that the formation of haematite could be the result of the synchronous metasomatic process. Herz (1979) suggested the existence of three metamorphic zones, not mentioning the haematite formation. It could be observed that the primary oxide phase in the IIF is magnetite and most of the hard haematite was derived from the metamorphic replacement of magnetite, forming micaceous or schistose haematite. Differently from most iron formations in the world, the formation of haematite deposits at QF occurred under high oxygen fugacity during metamorphism. The haematite microlaths display a strong preferred orientation, which determines the alongated shapes of the fragments. The terms foliated and unfoliated haematite have been applied by Dorr to the micaceous or schistose haematite, and to the isotropic, hydrothermally derived haematite. Under the microcope, the haematite exhibits a strong crystallographic or lattice orientation encircling the magnetite and martite porphyroclasts. The strain rate determined and defined the textural variation, size and economic importance of the deposits and the ore grade. Metamorphism at QF increases eastward and resulted in the formation of a gruneritic Fe-Mg amphibole, at the western portion, followed by a cummingtonitic amphibole at the central-western part, succeeded by the actinolite zone at the central-eastern part, and finally to the tremolite-anthophyllite zone to the east. These zones, arranged in a north-south pattern, can be followed in the pelitic units, whereas appear sericite-chlorite, kyanite-chloritoid and garnet-staurolite respectively. Carbonate geothermometry in IIF also may support the metamorphic variations. At the western zone the haematite forms small lenses within the itabirite, P-contents are slightly higher than in the remaining IIF, haematite grain size is minute, resulting in a submicaceous texture and the amount and dimension of relict magnetite within haematite is greater than in the other parts of QF. Jangada and Serra Azul deposits are examples of this zone. The central-western zone is characterised by significant haematite deposits, in considerable quantity and size, haematite grain size increased, in order to produce a micaceous texture, the P-contents and the amount of magnetite decreased. Pico do Itabirito, Cappo Xavier, Capitpo do Mato and Tamanduß correspond to the deposit type of this zone. At the eastern-central portion the amount of the hard haematite deposits decreases, increasing the soft haematite ore due to higher strain rates. However, it can be perceived that the relict magnetite almost disappeared and the haematite grain size became coarser than the haematite from the western zones. At the eastern zone, the haematite deposits exhibit typical schistose texture, the magnetite porphyroclasts are absent and the lowest P-grades in the haematitic iron formation. The haematite bodies characteristic from this zone are Andrade, Morro Agudo and the deposits at the Itabira District. The hydrothermally derived compact and isotropic haematite deposits, formed subsequently to the micaceous haematite bodies, were generated after deformation ceased, but under very high fluid pressure. The metamorphic reactions magnetite + quartz + H2O = grunerite + haematite and magnetite + quartz + H2O = grunerite + O2 were decisive in the formation of the metamorphic haematite deposits.

A numerical model has been developed to simulate the effectiveness and costs of a number of conceptual remedial measures aimed at reducing acidity and metal concentrations in the Ngakawau River and its tributaries near the Stockton Coal Mine, situated on the West Coast of New Zealand. The Stockton Coal Mine has been in operation over the past 100 years. During that time, seepage from waste rock dumps has contributed to elevated acidity and metal concentrations in the Ngakawau River and some of its tributaries. The yearly mean rainfall at the mine site is 6000 mm. The model, developed using GoldSim software, simulates rainfall, run-off and stream discharge for 26 tributaries. It then calculates acidity and metal concentrations in the mine impacted tributaries and the dilution downstream from the mine. The model has been calibrated to measured flow and acidity and metal concentrations in the Ngakawau River and some of its tributaries. Acidity and metal loads are removed from the system in accordance with specified efficiencies and capacities of the respective conceptual remedial measures. The user can compare specific remedial measures, or a combination of conceptual remedial measures. The model predicts the acidity and metal concentrations at a number of monitoring stations for any remedial strategy selected by the user. It also calculates the capital and operational costs for that particular remedial strategy. This paper presents the development of the numerical model and describes how the end-user can use it to compare the efficiency and costs of various remedial strategies by running different æwhat ifÆ scenarios.

A consortium of Canadian mining companies, engineering firms and the Ontario Government has supported Hydrochem&apos;s efforts in the last year to design and cost a 10 tpd NITROX PROCESS® demonstration plant. A 5 kg per hour mini plant was installed at the Hydrochem facilities in Brampton, Ontario. This paper describes design testwork on Dickenson Mines arsenopyrite concentrate and application of the findings to the demonstration plant flowsheet. The control of nitrates in discard solids and stack gases is discussed in detail. Nitric acid oxidation of arsenopyrite results in significant ele- mental sulphur formation, enough for it to be detrimental to sub- sequent cyanidation. Flowsheet variations aimed at dealing with this process characteristic are discussed and testwork results on one option (hot liming) are described.

INTRODUCTION THE senior author of this paper, while in Colorado on other official business, made a trip to the Cripple Creek gold-mining district to get more data than are at present available regarding the composition of the gas that issues from the rock into the mines of the district. This was done at the suggestion of George S. Rice, Chief Mining Engineer of the Bureau of Mines. There are many questions of interest and importance in connection with the ventilation of the mines in the Cripple Creek district, such as the menace to life and mining of a suffocating gas entering the mines from the rock, the danger due to powder smoke (from blasting operations), and danger of continued inhalation of rock dust by the miners. This report confines itself to the first problem, the gas from the rock, and principally to one phase of this question, the composition of the gas and its effects on men and lights. A more thorough study of this and other ventilation problems is planned. That the, rock gas is a real menace is shown by the fact that miners (variously estimated from 25 to 50 by different persons interviewed) have been killed by it in the 25 years that mining has been vigorously carried on at Cripple Creek. Many men have had narrow escapes from death, some of them having been incapacitated for days. In addition, much loss of time results because at certain periods of the year or on certain days it is impossible to enter some workings. IT is now generally recognized that the gravitational method of geophysical surveying is a valuable aid in elucidating the geological structure of the subsoil and enables the practical geologist to deduce the presence of useful deposits. The particular suitability of the torsion balance to the location of large and important subterranean structures has given rise to a wide. application of this method by many of the important oil companies in their search for future supplies, and so intense have been these efforts that little has been heard of the method in other connections, with the exception of occasional references to its application in the location of hidden deposits of metallic ores, salt and lignite, and a number of accounts of its use in the elucidation of geological structures. Its success in the location of salt domes is well known, and. establishes it as one of the most important of the geophysical methods, especially for the indirect location of oil. In the British Isles, however, no large occurrence of oil is likely to be revealed, and here the practical application of the gravitational method has been restricted almost entirely to the search for ores. This type of survey possesses well marked characteristics, and presents a gravitational problem that has necessitated the development of a special and probably unusual plan of campaign, full details of which it is hoped will shortly be published. The problems and difficulties encountered in this work are of necessity fundamentally related to those met with in the search for oil by means of the torsion balance, but they also possess several special and distinctive features which undoubtedly differentiate them from the obstacles confronting the oil prospector, and which call for special consideration and treatment.

This paper reports on a study of the impact of fast growing new technologies on the market for copper over the next 15 to 20 years. The greatest threat is clearly the inroads of fiber optics on the traditional market for copper in communication cable. Opportunity areas identified include heat pumps, solar power and heat, desalination, electric vehicles and others. The overall impact of new technologies on copper is expected to be modestly positive if adequately encouraged by effective R&D.

"Over the last 50 years disposal of uranium mill tailings has evolved from dumping untreated tailings into the nearest depression to depositing chemically-stabilized tailings into highly engineered management facilities. This paper describes the evolution of disposal methods and the criteria which have determined the development path followed. Remediation techniques to bring older and now unacceptable tailings deposits into satisfactory compliance with today's· regulations are reviewed.With the closure of the uranium mines in Elliot Lake, Ontario, considerable effort is being made on decommissioning the tailings areas by developing long term maintenance of water covers. The innovative methods being used to develop these water covers are detailed. Methods now under development in Saskatchewan for subaqueous deposition of high density or paste tailings for permanent disposal in mined out open pits are described.SummaryThe technology for uranium mill tailings disposal in Canada has evolved considerably over the past 51 years. This evolution has been driven by an improving understanding of how best to safely and permanently store tailings, in conjunction with stricter environmental protection regulations. Old sites are being decommissioned in situ, but may require long term care and maintenance. The use of water covers is an important technique in eastern Canada to prevent intrusion, radon evolution and, for the Elliot Lake tailings, acid generation. The major drawback of water covers in any above ground disposal method is the requirement that a long term maintenance and monitoring plan be put into effect for each site.New higher grade mines in Saskatchewan will increasingly use disposal in mined-out pits using the pervious surround method and/or paste tailings technology as a method to permanently dispose of these wastes and to permit “walkaway” after a few years of monitoring."

FOR a long time propeller-type fans have been considered a very adequate means to move great quantities of air against small static pres-sures. They have been in use for this purpose in mines, as well as in other installations. For static pressures of over 2 or 3 in. of water, the centrifugal blower almost ruled the field until very recently. Some attempts were made to use a number of propellers in line. Such arrange-ments made it possible to obtain pressures higher than 2 in. of water, but they complicated the construction and increased its expense, and the efficiencies were not improved. The more recent development of propeller-type fans has been decidedly influenced by the intensive aerodynamic research in connection with aeronautical development, which has taught us, in particular, how to use airfoils properly. The characteristic that makes an airfoil so valuable is the fact that when it moves through the air a high force component, the "lift," acts on it vertical to the motion, while the "drag" in the direction of the flow is small. The ratio of lift to drag is approximately 20 to 1 at the angles at which the profile is used in practice. An element of the turning blade, the movement of which, relative to the air, is mainly in the direction of the plane of rotation, thus experiences only a small "drag" FIG. 1.-DIAGRAM OF FORCES ON WING SECTION. opposing its rotation, and for this reason a relatively small torque is required at the driving shaft. At the same time there is a strong force component at 90° to the plane of rotation. This force is parallel to the propeller axis in the direction opposite to that of the flow of air, with a correspondingly high pressure increase.

"The Dywidag-Systems International DSI Tandem Anchor bolt, with an improved expansion shell-washer design, can substantially reduce potential entry roof falls caused by twisted or deformed expansion shells of the traditional mechanical anchor bolts during installation. In addition, the improved anchorage system can also ensure that a consistent and high installed load is achieved, which is critical for effective beam building under thinly laminated or layered roof conditions. This paper discusses the genesis and anchorage performance of the Tandem Anchor bolt, and analyzes the tension/torque relationship of different mechanical shell anchors using data obtained from both lab and field tests. It also discusses roof bolting mechanisms, roof bolting systems, and factors influencing effective beam building. Finally, numerical modeling was used to analyze the effect of bolt pretension magnitude on entry roof stability.INTRODUCTIONThroughout the history of underground mining, keeping the roof from uncontrollable collapse has been the greatest concern of the miner. Tremendous strides have been made in better understanding, predicting, and supporting the mine roof. This conference has spent the last twenty-eight years sharing information and distributing it to the mining community. A paraphrased statement from former Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld adequately describes the challenges to the mining engineer as it pertains to roof control: it is a study of known knowns, known unknowns, and unknown unknowns. It is the hope of the authors to address some of these unknowns.The paper discusses the development of bolt anchorage systems from dry shells to shells with resin-assisted anchorage. It looks at some of the issues faced with the anchorage shells being used when introducing the insertion pressures caused by resin cartridges. The rationale behind the shell design changes was to compensate for this resin induced stresses.An improved expansion shell assembly (a slotted expansion shell base, a tapered cramming plug, and a novel support nut with tapered top) for mine roof bolts makes up the Tandem Anchor (U.S. Pat. No. 6742966); this minimizes the possibility of twisting seen with traditional mechanical shells and thus prevents springy bolts and shell leaves from breaking. A fully grouted Tandem Anchor bolting system has the advantages of both the pure mechanical point-anchor and the non-pretention fully grouted bolting systems. Once installed, the installed load or pretension will be locked in and never bleed off. Compared with the fully-grouted (2-speed resin) tension rebar bolting system, the fully-grouted Tandem Anchor bolting system can (a) reduce bolting cycle time (about 15 seconds per bolt), boosting coal production and productivity; (b) provide a greater installed load or pretention; and (c) achieve a consistent tension/torque ratio, which gives better bolting quality control. Therefore, a fully grouted Tandem Anchor bolting system is the most effective means to reinforce a weak rock mass intrinsically by the theory of beam building. For thinly laminated or layered roof conditions, a higher installed load or pretention (50% or more of the bolt's yield strength) can make a roof bolting system much stiffer, which results in less roof movement. Numerical modeling results show that the magnitude of the roof's tensile stress and relaxation zone can be substantially reduced under a higher installed load or pretention."

Project cost control procedures and computer systems have enjoyed a successful and simple relationship over the past decade, thanks primarily to the proliferation of portable computers or PC&apos;s. Prior to the introduction of this technology, project control was largely a manual and somewhat onerous task of historical data compilations, with little time available for dynamic forecasting, staged planning, or pre-emptive cost control. Automated systems developed during this era were resident on "Heavy Iron" or mainframe computers and were expensive to maintain and operate. Use of these early systems was limited to large engineering, construction, and industrial concerns with the economies of scale and funding required for their successful application. Systems were either designed for critical path analysis or task scheduling, but rarely integrated with the other, much less cost control.

Kaolinite is of very fine particle size in nature and thus its dispersion plays a key role in the successful removal of kaolinite in iron ore flotation and selective flocculation processes. As the most widely used dispersant in the world, sodium silicate has been used as a standard dispersant for kaolinite in the iron ore industry. However, the actual effect of sodium silicate on the colloid stability of kaolinite particles and its dispersion mechanism remain unknown in the literature. In this work, the dispersion effect and dispersion mechanisms of some common inorganic and organic dispersants, including sodium silicate, polyphosphate and a low molecular weight polyacrylic acid, on kaolinite particles were systematically investigated through electrophoretic mobility and colloidal stability studies over a wide pH range. It was found that sodium silicate-kaolinite interactions only take place in the neutral and acidic pH range, while polyacrylic acid and polyphosphate interact with kaolinite from pH 3 to 10.5. Consequently, sodium silicate only disperses kaolinite at neutral and acidic pH. In contrast, polyacrylic acid and polyphosphate disperse kaolinite from pH 3 to 10.5, with strong dispersion effect observed at neutral and acidic pH. In the iron ore industry, selective fl occulation and reverse cationic fl otation, the most widely used flotation route, are both conducted at pH 10 to 10.5. The results of the present study show that, at such high pH, polyacrylic acid and polyphosphate are more effective dispersants of kaolinite, in comparison with sodium silicate.

IN plants casting electric-furnace ingots and converting them immediately into blooms, billets, slabs, bars or forgings, the criterion of quality performance is the soundness of the semifinished or finished product. When rejections are necessary, it is not always obvious whether the defects were caused by an unsound ingot or by improper treatment during the heating and forming operations. To evaluate the effects of the numerous factors involved, it is necessary to accumulate a large number of detailed observations and to analyze and interpret these data properly. Even after a thorough investigation has been conducted, it is impossible, in some cases, to isolate the cause of the defect and say that it is definitely the result of an unsound condition in the ingot or mistreatment of the ingot during further processing. Two factors that are extremely difficult to evaluate are the chemical composition of the steel and time from finish pour to charge in the soaking pits or "track time," and it is necessary to evaluate their combined effects before many other factors can be studied. Plain carbon, fine-grained steel in the range of 0.18 to 0.23 pct carbon, is very susceptible to cracking and the longer the elapsed time between the pouring of the ingots and stripping for charging into the soaking pits, the higher the billet rejections for cracks are found to be. Following the Coalbrook disaster in 1960, research into coal pillar strength resulted in the adoption of the concept of a safety factor for the design of stable pillars in South African coal mining. At the time when the original statistical analysis was performed by Salamon and Munro in the early 1960s, 27 cases of failed pillar workings were considered suitable for inclusion in the database of failed pillars. Pillar failure did not stop after the introduction of the safety factor formula by Salamon and Munro (1967). In the ensuing years, pillars that were created before the application of the formula deteriorated and later failed, as did ones that were created after the introduction of the formula. This means that over time, the database of failed pillar cases increased in size, allowing ever more reliable analyses to be performed. The number of failed cases in the database had grown from the original 27 in the 1960s to 86 by 2011. All the failed cases are contained in the updated database. The database of stable pillars, which is also used in the derivation of strength formulae, has now been extended from 125 to 337 cases. The new database of intact pillar cases is more complete as it bridges the time gap between the Salamon and Munro (1967) and the Van der Merwe (2006) databases. The original requirements for inclusion into the database were satisfied in the compilation of this latest collection. The characteristics of the original database of intact pillars did not change in a meaningful way. The mining depth and pillar dimensions of the new database are largely as they were in the original database. Time-related trends with regard to pillar dimensions and depth of mining could not be found, indicating that the geometrical parameters of coal mining in South Africa have not changed meaningfully in approximately a century of mining. The characteristics of cases in the updated database of failed pillars does not differ substantially from the one published by Van der Merwe (2006). The same difference between that database and the original Salamon and Munro database, namely that the average safety factor of the failed cases had increased dramatically, from 1.0 to 1.5, is still apparent. This may be due to the inclusion of more failures from specific areas that exhibit a disproportionate number of failures at higher safety factors. These areas are the Vaal Basin, Klip River, and Free State coalfields. The new database confirms yet again that there is no correlation between the safety factors of failed pillars and their time of failure. The safety factor on its own is thus not a reliable predictor of longterm stability of pillars. Keywords coal pillar, stable pillar cases, pillar collapse, pillar data base.

Water is a medium in which flotation takes place, and flotation efficiency is highly dependent on water quality. Of the total water resources on Earth, less than 2.5 percent is fresh water. This water is used in agriculture, by households and by industry. Among the industrial users of fresh water, the mining industry occupies an important position. Furthermore, mining operations are often located in arid areas with very limited access to fresh water. The demand for and shortage of water in these parts of the world, such as the Atacama Desert in Chile, makes the use of seawater by the mining industry the only sustainable solution.

"This report is the second of a series dealing with electrical methods of underground communication nd signalling, and is a discussion of some of the factors involved in -applying radio in mines.A previous report2 described the results obtained by the use of the ""T.P.S."" of ground-conduction method of signalling, and outlined in a general way the requirements for a practical mine communication apparatus.The popularity of radio, the development work on new apparatus, a desire to render humanitarian service to entombed miners, and an endeavor to find new uses and applications for radio stimulated many persons to attempt the application of radio to mine rescue purposes. A number of experiments on underground reception from surface broadcast stations have been conducted by different experimenters in various parts of the country and the widespread interest in the subject is shown by the fact that these tests have been con¬ducted in many States, The Bureau of Mines has received information regarding, underground tests in Illinois, Pennsylvania, Arizona, Utah, Idaho, Colorado, Michigan, Wyoming, Kentucky, New York, Connecticut, and in England, Germany, Italy, and Franc.From occasional press notices and illustrations in different papers it may appear that radio communication in mines and in tunnels being excavated is en established fact, and that the method is comparatively simple. A new separator, known as the Hydrofloat cell, has been developed to overcome limitations of traditional flotation cells in recovering coarse particles. In this process, small air bubbles are introduced into a hindered "teeter" bed of fluidized solids to create light bubble-particle aggregates that can be separated based on differences in density. Laboratory tests conducted with coarse phosphate feeds indicate that the Hydrofloat cell is capable of increasing BPL recoveries by nearly 20% over conventional flotation methods. Based on these encouraging results, a pilot-scale Hydrofloat cell was fabricated and installed at a central Florida phosphate plant. Test data collected using the pilot-scale unit suggest that the BPL recovery of the plus 35 mesh plant feed can be increased by more than 40% through the application of this new technology. This improvement is particularly beneficial due to the very high grade (-73% BPL) of the plus 16 mesh particles in the Hydrofloat concentrate. This article describes the theoretical basis for the development of the Hydrofloat cell and provides an overview of recent laboratory and pilot-scale test results.
