The variation of elastic modulus with terrzperature between -150° and 600°C has been investigated. Compounds close to equiatomic cornposition exhibit very low modulus values and very high damping near room temperature. The modulus rises steeply with both decreasing and increasing temperature. The modulus minimum and the high damping are believed to be connected with a martensitic transformation of TiNi. In bulk material this transition takes place slightly above room temperature quite rapidly and reversibly, with a hysteresis of some 30°C, depending on the Ti:Ni ratio. Oxygen impurity affects the reaction time. THE inter metallic compound TiNi has been reported to exist in an ordered CsCl (B2) structure,l-6 the homogeneity range varying rather markedly with temperature.7 Some investigators reported this compound to decompose peritectoidally to Ti2Ni and TiNi, between 650° and 800°C,3 or below,',g the latter workers also suggesting the decomposition to be strain-sensitive. Purdy and Parr were the first to report a structural transformation to a new, possibly hexagonal, structure at 36°C,7 a temperature indubitably too low to allow the significant amount of diffusion necessary for a peritectoid reaction. Mechanical-property investigations of compositions close to TiNi just above room temperature have qualitatively shown remarkable anomalies, particularly with respect to clamping,' and to a "memory" effect, that is, plastically deformed material returning to its original shape on being heated through the "decomposition" temperature.9 The original explanation of this effect—based on the apparent experimental observation of Ti2Ni or TiNi, formation in the material subjected to tensile or compressive stresses, respectivelp—does not appear plausible. It appeared more probable that the change involved may be a martensitic, diffusionless structural transformation, similar to those observed in other B2 structures such as 0 brass,'' AuCd,ll and AuZn.12 The existence of such transformation has been established recently,', although the symmetry of the low-temperature structure is not yet known. The present paper describes the elastic modulus and damping behavior of polycrystalline TiNi in both structures. EXPERIMENTAL METHOD 1) Specimens. All the specimens to be investigated were prepared from premelted electrolytic nickel and iodide titanium by nonconsumable arc melting and casting in a water-cooled copper mold. The cast billets were canned in mild steel, extruded, and swaged to approximately 0.375 in. diam. The cans were then removed by pickling or machining. Preliminary material balance checks indicated no significant weight losses on melting (less than 5 mg on a 50-g button); hence nominal compositions have been used throughout. In agreement with previously reported observations7 no single-phase material was obtained at—or close to—Ti 1.00 Ni1.00 a small amount of finely divided second phase always being present. It was found that most of the oxygen impurity was associated with this minor phase, which was identified as oxygen-bearing Ti2Ni—possibly Ti,Ni,O. THE purpose of this paper is to present briefly a description of some of the special methods of separation or concentration, either singly or in combination with others, and to give certain operating data and examples. Explanation of the usual methods of large-production mill treatment, such as flotation or wet tabling, or of chemically treating industrial minerals, is not included in the scope of this paper, although one of these methods might be, in certain instances, augmented by one or more of the special methods that will be enumerated herein. Description of these special methods will be centered on magnetic separators, electro-static separators and air flotation or air tables.

During 1975, the Reclasource Corp. constructed and started up a plant for the recovery of mill scale, coke breeze, blast furnace dust; blast furnace sludge; and TOC dust, at the site of Crucible Steel, Inc., Midland, Pa. The Reclaform Process was employed as the criteria for plant design. This process takes the solid wastes (as listed above) which are commonly found in integrated steel mills, sizes them, forms them through the use of a carbonaceous binder briquetting system, and fixes the binder through a final heat treating step. Blast furnace tests have been performed on 15,000 tons of Reclaform briquets. This paper gives a brief history of the program, and describes the process and the raw materials involved. The blast furnace campaign and its major conclusions are discussed.

"A mechanistic model of axial charge segregation in rotating drums is presented. We show that granular material composed of different frictional properties diffuse into axial bands as a consequence of concentration fluctuations in the free surface layer that is caused by friction-limited mobility. A Bagnoldian stress assumption ensures an asymmetric free surface profile thereby providing the essential ingredients for the evolution of axial bands and the subsequent band coarsening observed in the literature. The formulation is sensitive to the boundary conditions of tumbling mills, including particle size and density, mill speed, inter-particle bulk friction, end wall friction and drum geometry (length and diameter).INTRODUCTIONA mechanism to fully describe the axial segregation of charge in a rotating drum remains elusive to the mineral processing industry. With regard to low aspect ratio mills (like ball mills), current thinking favours the use of closed circuit mills with correspondingly low residence times to offset the completely random contact probabilities between particles and balls (Wills & Napier-Munn, 2006). Conical end caps are argued to exploit the centrifugal force to achieve a regular gradation of ball size along the mill with larger sizes at the feed end and smaller ones closer to the discharge. However; segregation along the length has been observed in the absence of conical end caps (Oyama, 1939; Levine, 1999): In these investigations, sufficient differences in the particle’s mechanical properties (particle size, density, shape, surface roughness) was enough to successfully achieve axial segregation. Figure 1 shows the segregation of a bimodal distribution (by size) into bands of larger (darker colour) and smaller (lighter colour) particles."

The Ashanti mine is located within the Lower Proterozoic Birimian of Ghana, and covers a concession of 474 square kilometres at its Obuasi operations which comprise large scale underground, surface and tailings treatment facilities. The mine had operated for a century at the end of 1997 and had produced nearly 25 million ounces of gold, a significant proportion of which came from the underground operations. This paper covers the strategy under which exploration for both surface and underground mineral resources was instrumental in enabling the expansion programme to go ahead together with the methodologies and results that have developed in the exploration area over the last five years. Within capital expenditure constraints, the objective on surface is to replace oxide depletion with a secondary objective of discovering new sulphides in areas other than the main trend. In the underground, the exploration strategy is directed at replacement of both underground and surface sulphide depletion, minimising finding costs and assisting the development of long lead time infrastructure. The exploration application describes the methodologies in use for both surface and underground exploration that have been developed in recent years in conjunction with a description of a major review conducted in 1995/96 of the exploration database using an integrated approach, geochemistry, geophysics, remote sensing and structural geology. A revisit of soil geochemical data in particular, and modification of exploration methodology led to the success in finding relatively significant new oxides in 1997.

Most analysts find that progress has been evolutionary in any technologic field. To be sure, a few discrete breakthroughs can usually be identified, but viewed in its entirety, the curve of technologic progress over time tends to be relatively smooth with few discontinuities. Even in those cases where a major scientific discovery is achieved, the rate of technologic progress is limited by the often surprisingly slow rate of commercializing the concept into usable products. Whereas discovery and invention tend to be discrete events, technical innovation is often a painfully slow process. In spite of overall gradual change, technologic progress in most fields, when viewed in retrospect, tends to reveal certain relatively homogeneous periods where little change is evident, separated by episodes of accelerated progress. Thus, open-pit mining over the past century has changed from predominately train haulage to truck haulage and is now experiencing a major increase in belt haulage. Ore reserve estimation is another field that fits the same pattern, and the history of mine evaluation lends itself to a similar analysis. Evaluating mine investment opportunities is a fascinating aspect of mining. The unique set of risks inherent to every mining project is particularly intriguing. Geologic risks are most obvious, since faulty ore grade and tonnage estimates are among the leading causes of mine failures. Wide swine's in mineral commodity prices are usually cited as another major risk in mining. Because any ore deposit is a finite resource and the miner has limited discretion in selecting a mining sequence, mines are generally at the mercy of notoriously fickle commodity markets. There is a tendency for many mine investment analysts to feel that mineral market uncertainties are unprecedented in severity. Of course, prices in other markets rise and fall also-in some cases as precipitously as with minerals. However, two other mining characteristics tend to compound this marketing risk. First, the preproduction development period for a new mine is characteristically long. Under extremely favorable conditions, a significant mine may be developed in as little as two years, but the norm is four to six years or more. Second, mining is among the most capital intensive industries, consistently ranking near the top among all industrial sectors in assets per employee, and near the bottom in annual sales dollars per dollar of assets. Thus, mine investors typically have large sums invested for a long time before the outcome of the venture is determined by notoriously unpredictable markets. This is not a business for the faint of heart, and the importance of sound investment decision making is obvious. The high risk and technical complexity of mining operations have combined to require greater attention to financial evaluation by mining engineers than by most engineers in other specialties. Nearly all early mining engineering textbooks dealt with problems in mine valuation in a detailed manner; and, today, the sophistication of capital investment analysis is high in the mineral industries. Traditional Mine Valuation Methods Although some evaluation process has no doubt accompanied nearly every mine development throughout history, a formalized quantitative approach first emerged in the last half of the 19th century with the establishment of academic programs in mining engineering. The philosophy and approach to mine valuation that evolved at this time were, with periodic minor refinements, considered the standard for nearly a century. Only after 1960 did major changes begin to occur. The traditional approach to mine valuation reflected the investment community's historic attitudes toward risk. Mines were generally considered too risky for debt financing, and virtually every new mine was financed from internally generated funds or new equity subscriptions. The known coal resources of South Australia are either of poor quality, or expensive to extract, or both. Export quality coal occurs only at great depth in the remote north of the State; the balance of the State's coal resources are suitable only for local electricity generation. Currently there is only one coal mine in the State, at Leigh Creek. This provides fuel for approximately 34% of the State's electricity generation, the balance being fuelled by natural gas. In the near future, new fuel sources must be developed to augment diminishing supplies of natural gas, and to cater for increasing demands for electricity. The South Australian Government has determined that future electricity generation will be based on the combustion of local coals. The geological and geographical environment of the known coal deposits and the quality of these coals are such that the most up to date and innovative technology must be applied to both extraction and combustion processes. The Government, the Electricity Trust of South Australia, and several Australian and overseas companies have embarked on an extensive research and development programme to ensure that these otherwise useless resources can be developed to the benefit of the State.

Así, los vehículos sin carriles, sobre neumáticos conquistan un lugar en la minería gracias a su movilidad con plena independencia. The status of utilization of copper ore resources, and the application and development of biohydrometallury technology in the world is reviewed. Based on the characterization of Zambia?s copper resources, biohydrometallurgy technology is shown to be a practical approach to extract and utilize the enormous low grade copper resource, such as ore tailings and low grade copper ore in this country. Through the cooperation of CSU, China and MMMD, Zambia, ?CNMC-CSU Demonstration Base of Biohydrometallurgy Technology in Zambia? was launched and several biohydrometallurgy plants are being constructed. This indicates that the biohdyrometallurgy technology would be applied soon in Zambia and in the whole Africa. Biohydrometallurgy technology stands as an efficient alternative to the traditional pyrometallurgy process and it can be the key to unlock mineral resources value. THE principal operating and producing properties covered by the Western Operations of the United States Smelting Refining and Mining Company are the U. S. and Lark mine in the Bingham district of Utah, the Bayard department in the Central mining district of New Mexico, the Midvale mill and smelter near Salt Lake City, the lead refinery of its subsidiary, U. S. S. Lead Refinery, Inc., at East Chicago, Ind., and the coal operations of its subsidiary, United States Fuel Company, at Hiawatha, Utah. Operations of lesser importance at this time are conducted either on company account or by lessees in the Centennial, Bullion Beck, and Eagle and Blue Bell mines in the Tintic district of Utah, the Hidden Treasure and Ophir mines in the Ophir district of Utah, and the White Knob mine in Custer County, Idaho. The Richmond-Eureka Mining Company, in which the Company owns a controlling interest, has leased its properties near Eureka, Nev., to the Eureka Corporation Limited. The Gold-road property at Goldroad, Ariz., has been shut down since 1942, and due to high costs of labor and supplies, consideration is now being given to removal of all surface and underground improvements. The mine and mill im¬provements at the Sunnyside property in Colorado, recently purchased by the Sunbank Corporation, a subsidiary of the Company, are now being dismantled.

SUMMARY AND CONCLUSIONS This report describes a study to develop a detailed set of guide¬lines and equipment recommendations to be used as a guide for mine operators, mine inspectors, and equipment manufacturers in implementing the emergency escapeway standards for metal and nonmetal underground mines. It was sponsored by the United States Bureau of Mines. The first part of this report reviews the historical background of metal and nonmetal mine fires and the development of present and proposed mandatory standards. This is followed by a discussion of the survey of representative mines and how the proposed standard effects these mines. The remainder of the report covers technical discussions of each escapeway component including a comprehensive computer sim¬ulation of mine evacuation. Following the technical discussion of each group of escapeway components is a list of the pertinent guidelines. A study of past mine fires indicates that a serious commitment by operators to the proposed escape standards would be instrumental in saving lives in the future. The most significant event in a recent mine fire, in which no deaths resulted, was the very early discovery of the fire. The evacuation was orderly thanks to careful preparation by the mine personnel. However, the mine was possibly only spared a real disaster because of the discovery of the fire almost at its inception. Installation of automatic fire and smoke warning devices may be the single most important step in preventing future disasters. The self-rescuer has saved many lives in mine fires. Men have also died while attempting to use them. The reason men died was either because the unit was not working or the miner did not understand how or when to use it. There is no good excuse for either of these conditions occurring. Regular maintenance and inspection should prevent unit failures. Frequent instruction on when and how to use the self¬rescuer would prevent confusion and potential fatalities. A means of

STUDIES of the transformation of austenite at constant subcritical temperatures have been numerous since the work of Davenport and Bain.1 Considerable information has been obtained on low-alloy steels and on high-carbon alloys containing undissolved carbide or graphite at the austenitizing temperature. Little is known of the isothermal transformation of austenite containing in solution large amounts of both carbon and a single alloying element. In this investigation four steels containing one per cent carbon and with chromium in the range 3 to 9 per cent have been examined with the view to establishing the fundamental character of the isothermal reactions when all carbon and chromium are initially in solution in austenite. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Alloys The chemical compositions of the steels investigated are given in Table I. The 4 per cent Cr alloy is a commercial steel. The other steels were made by the Carpenter Steel Co. as 50-lb., induction-furnace heats and rolled to 5/8-in. round bars. Bars were softened at 650° to 700°C. before the specimens were cut. [ ] Metallographic Method Most of the lines on the transformation diagrams presented here have been placed on the basis of the microscopic examination of partially reacted specimens. Thees specimens were approximately ½ by ¼ by 1/8 in. in size. Specimens of the 9 per cent Cr steel were held 10 to 12 hr. at 1200° to I225°C. before quenching to the various subcritical temperatures. The other steels were held for 2 to 2 ½ hr. at 1200°C. before quenching. These treatments, carried out in an atmosphere of purified nitrogen, produced an austenite grain size larger than A.S.T.M. No. I, some grains being 1 to 2 mm. in diameter. There were a few undissolved carbide particles in some specimens of the 9 per cent Cr steel. It is believed, however, that any errors in the results due to incomplete solution of carbon and chromium in austenite are negligible; that is, austenite compositions may be considered as being those listed in Table I. The way you were acting last night I did not expect to see so many but you are evidently all right, and survived. This morning's session is the ?RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT? theme, and our first speaker- (and we made a little switch) - is Jack Huebler, Associate Director, Research Institute of Gas Technology, Chicago, Ill. The switch is because of a projector problem. Jack Huebler was born in Michigan and received degrees in Chemical Engineering and Mathematics from the University of Michigan in 1941. He joined the Surface Combusion Corp. immediately and was with them for 20 years, rising to the head of research. He took leading roles in the invention and development of many heat using processes involving gas chemistry combustion and metallurgy. The now famous Erie Mining Taconite Pellet Process was one of these. He pioneered in gas carburizing and in the preparation and use of prepared atmospheres. He specialized in the heat transfer aspects of many new industrial metal heating processes. He left Surface 5 years ago to join IGT.

Recent innovations in atomization of molten metals have occurred in the area of single fluid atomization. Impulse Atomization (IA), one of the single fluid techniques, provides unique capabilities to study different regimes of atomization in a controlled environment. By changing processing variables, a mono-dispersed distribution of droplets above one millimeter in diameter can be produced. This is accomplished through proper characterization of the forces influencing the process and in particular the flow of melt through the orifice. This paper will discuss the approach and illustrate results with molten aluminum and cobalt.

Since the introduction of raiseboring 30 years ago there have been many operational and mechanical design improvements in the raiseboring machine, its reamers and associated cutters. These have now made the technology of raiseboring a routine and practical operation within the underground mining world. Over the last decade these advances have been aided by the introduction of robust automation packages which have allowed unattended drilling and reaming, real time performance monitoring and enhancement and the rapid diagnostic investigation of mechanical and electrical abnormalities. The constraint to higher raiseboring performance is now the drill string. However when it comes to a cost-effective solution of applying the high drill string torque and tension necessary for the next step change in performance, designers have æhit the wallÆ. Whilst carbon fiber reinforced plastic composites with abrasive resistant sheaths may offer a solution, the limit of conventional steel, drill string technology has been reached. This limit to advancement is however based on the drill string being in tension and alternative solutions may exist by literally turning the raiseboring paradigm on its head. This paper describes the story of a small Australian company engaged in the design and manufacture of mechanical excavation machines, two Australian raiseboring contractors and three Australian mines going against tradition and pushing down rather than pulling up.

There is an increasing challenge of waste management regarding the growth of photovoltaic (PV) technology. Often overlooked by its environmental benefits of greenhouse gas emission reduction, PV technology contain metals that are highly hazardous for the environment. Amorphous silicon (a-Si) PV modules employ indium-tin-oxide as transparent conductive oxide and given the high price of indium its recovery could be advantageous from an economic perspective as well. Leaching of indium was predicted by comparing the Pourbaix diagram with the values of oxidoreduction potential and pH measured on a phosphoric acid solution. The a-Si panel was subjected to thermal treatment to remove the proprietary, protective coating and allow leaching to occur. Then, indium could be leached by phosphoric acid in a jacketed reactor, reaching a concentration of 55 ppm (67% leaching rate) with a 0.2 g/mL of a-Si panel to aqueous solution ratio. The leaching of indium with phosphoric acid is novel and could open doors for many other recycling routes for solar panels.

Introduction Today, uranium is of great interest because of its application to nuclear power and nuclear weapons. Kazakhstan has been an important source of uranium for more than fifty years. All uranium products are exported. Results In Kazakhstan uranium exploration started in 1948 and developed in several parts of the country thru mining of hard rock deposits. There are known around 50 uranium deposits in six provinces: Shu-Sarysuyskaya (57%), North Kazakhstan (18%), Syrdaryinskaya (15%), Ilyiskaya (7%), Caspian (2%), Balkhash (1%). In the Northern Kazakhstan province, KazSabton took over Tselinny Mining & Chemical Co in 1999. In this province the stockwork is of Paleozoic and Paleozoic folded complexes origin. In the Balkash province some mining of volcanogenic deposits occurred during the Soviet era. This province’s stockwork is of Endogenous origin.In the Ili province uraniumis mainly found in uranium-coal deposits formed by oxidation of the lignite beds roofs. In the Caspian province the Prikaspisky Combine operated since the 1960s a major mining and processing complex on the Mangyshalk Peninsula. This led to the founding of Aktau. It was privatised as Kaskor in 1992 and operations ceased in 1994. The uranium occurrence is associated with the phosphorous from fossil fish bone detritus conglomeration. In the Chu-Sarysu province, which has more than half the country's known resources, both Stepnoye and Tsentralnoye have been operating since 1978 and 1982 respectively. Uranium mineralization occurred in the regional stratum oxidation zones. In the Syrdarya province slightly to the west of the province’s center the No.6 Mining group has been operating since 1985. Uranium mineralization occurred in the regional stratum oxidation zones.

"The Quintette coal property lies in the Rocky Mountain foothills of northeastern British Columbia (see Figure 1). Quintette and the adjacent Bullmoose property of Teck Corporation are soon to become the first commercial coal mines in the Peace River Coal Field, which is estir1ated to contain 10 billion tonnes of metallurgical coal reserves.Denison Mines Limited acquired the original Quintette coal licenses in 1969 and 1970. Exploration began soon after and the first feasibility study was conducted in 1975. Denison devoted the following six years to extensive planning and feasibility studies of the project. During this period, the provincial and federal governments also undertook studies to assess infrastructure requirements and economic viability of development in this part of the province. Many of the proposed mine sites such as Bullmoose and Quintette were at least 100 to 150 kilometres from the towns of Chetwynd and Dawson Creek, the nearest centres serviced by good highways and a railroad, and a complete network of services would have to be provided if such mines were to be developed. The overall project became known as the North East Coal Development.Concurrently with the feasibility studies, numerous technical and sales missions to Japan were made by representatives of Canadian industry and government, culminating in January 1981 with agreements for Quintette Coal Limited and Teck Corporation to supply a total of 115 million tonnes 8 million tonnes per year for 15 years of primarily metallurgical coal to the Japanese Steel Industry."
