Background Data collection system instrumentation and cables are often located in hazardous areas of underground coal mines. As a result, frequent damage to the instrumentation cables occurs from roof falls, heavy equipment, and the relocation of air, water, and power lines. A similar problem exists in surface areas where cables and instrumentation can be damaged by animals and by vehicle traffic. Without a circuit-breaking feature, the damaged cables could cause instrumentation to be ruined, cause power supply failure, and otherwise disrupt data collection in some situations the lack of a circuit-breaking feature might cause an ignition in a methane atmosphere.

Although many metallurgists know that some pearlitic special steels can be made troostitic, martensitic, and even austenitic, without quenching, and, therefore, without exposing them to the dangers of the quenching-bath, the practical significance of such possibility does not seem to have received the attention it deserves. Let us recall briefly the mechanism of the transformation alluded to. In Fig. 1 (after Guillet) is shown the constitutional diagram of nickel-steel; that is, of alloys of iron, carbon, and nickel. Any steel the composition of which falls within the area LPO is pearlitic after slow cooling; any steel the composition of which is represented by a point within the area MLO is martensitic, and any steel within the area MNO is austenitic. Starting with pearlitic steel, then by increasing the carbon-content or the nickel-content, or both, the metal becomes marten-sitic and eventually austenitic; that is, its composition crosses first the boundary-line LO and then the line MO—and it remains martensitic or austenitic after slow (air) cooling.' We have in this way imparted to the metal without quenching it the properties of hardened carbon-steel. In other words, the steel is now self-hardening; Nickel cannot be introduced into solid steel, but by the well-known process of case-hardening it

The South African Minerals Development Act (?the Act?) has been promulgated and will come into full force and effect once it is gazetted. Thereafter, all Old Order mineral rights will have to be converted into New Order mineral rights within a 5-year period, probably by the end of 2008. The conversion of rights will be achieved only with the demonstrated inclusion of empowerment groups in the conversion applications. In addition to the Act, the first draft of the proposed Royalty Bill (?the Bill?) was released during the week beginning 17 March 2003. Comments on the Bill?s contents had to be submitted before 30 April 2003. The contents were to be considered in terms of applicability and acceptability to the South African minerals industry, where after proposed comments and suggested amendments were to be submitted to the relevant State Treasury office. Specifically referring to the Bill, the general response from the industry is one of concern. Since any royalty is tantamount to a tax, the general feeling is that the current mining taxation rates are already internationally competitive and to increase these effective rates, notably at differing rates depending on commodity type, will have an adverse impact on the South African mining industry. A number of these impacts can be mitigated to some degree, depending on the flexibility of the State to address the major concerns.

The solubility of nitrogen in liquid iron alloys containing chromium and nickel has been measured in the temperature range 1550° to 1700°C at nitrogen pressures to 1 ah. The solubility surface has been determined for the iron corner of the liquid metallic ternary to 21 pct Cr and 11 pct Ni. The nitrogen solubility increases markedly with increasing chromium concentration. The effect of nickel and the bilinear effect of chromium and nickel are less pronounced. The solubility data are presented, and interaction coefficients are determined from them. THE solubility of nitrogen has been determined in liquid Fe-Cr-Ni binary and ternary alloys. The work in this laboratory has been directed toward a relatively limited composition range, that is to 20 pct Cr and 10 pct Ni. Humbert and Elliott1 studied the entire ternary; but their investigation was, understandably, limited in this region. The region considered here is of the greatest commercial interest. Knowledge of the solubility in these alloys is important for accurate control of the nitrogen levels in various stainless alloys. Also, the solution behavior is of theoretical interest because of its deviations from ideal dilute solution rules at moderate chromium levels. The nitrogen solubility in the iron binaries has been reviewed extensively by Pehlke and Elliott,2 particularly with respect to the dilute solution interaction parameters. More recently, there has been some interest in accurate descriptions of solute interactions in non-dilute solutions. Most of the investigators have adopted a power series fit to accommodate any non-linearity of the data. The Taylor series expansion is adopted here, using Scimar's notation3 for the interaction coefficients. An alternate method, instead of requiring higher-order expansions, is to restrict the range of the composition variables. A planar solubility surface may be fitted to the data and its range of validity determined. If the axes of this region are displaced from the usual origin—the solvent pure iron—a change in standard state is required for the solution reaction. The standard state for nitrogen in iron is commonly taken as the hypothetical 1 wt pct solution of nitrogen in pure iron. However, for an alloy of appreciable solute concentration, e.g., 13 pct Cr or 18 pct Cr-8 pct Ni, it would be convenient to use that base composition as the solvent and redefine the solution reaction in terms of that particular solvent. A brief derivation follows, defining the free energy of solution in an alloy solvent. Following the treatment by Darken and Gurry,4 for a nitrogen pressure of 1 atm: N (pure component) = N (1 wt pct in solvent) [l] AG=RT ln100/ wt pct N in solvent Taking this reaction for an alloy solvent less the same reaction for a pure iron solvent the relation between nitrogen in pure iron and an alloy is: N (1 wt pct in Fe) = N (1 wt pct in alloy) [2] AG = RT[ln(wt pct N in Fe) - ln(wt pct N in alloy)] Adding ½ N2(g) to each side and subtracting N (1 wt pct in Fe) = ½N2(g), the total free energy for solution of nitrogen in an alloy, referred to nitrogen at infinite dilution, is given by: ½N2 (g) = N (wt pct in alloy) L3] AG°3 = -RT ln(wt pct N in alloy )PN =1 atm Interaction parameters have their usual meaning when ?G°/RT is differentiated with respect to the proper composition coordinate. If desired, the dilute alloy treatment may be utilized with the new reference composition as the solvent. This has. indeed, been done by Small and pehlke5 in their analysis of nitrogen solution in liquid 18-8 alloys. The Sieverts' technique was used for this investigation on an apparatus previously described.6 The materials used in this program were: Ferrovac-E iron, 99.95 pct, Crucible Steel Co.: chromium, 99.95 pct, Union Carbide Metals Co.; nickel, 99.9 pct, International Nickel Co. Recrystallized alumina crucibles were used with no evidence of crucible-melt reaction. RESULTS The locations of the ternary compositions investigated are shown in Fig. 1. It may at first appear doubtful that any further ideas can now come from such a well-trodden soil, when we consider that the ground of the subject has been so thoroughly gone over in many of its phases and that observations have been recorded in technical journals, ever since the days when Luckow and his cotemporaries brought the electrolytic deposition of pure copper to the position of an exact scientific method. Certain facts, however, which seem worthy of note, have come under the writer's observation during an extended use of the method in a large refinery, involving frequent tests of refined Lake and electrolytic copper, and thousands of assays of native copper concentrates and tailings. This work has required a careful study of the conditions suited to the assay of refined copper, and of ores and tailings— conditions which must be varied for each particular case to secure the best results. Especially is this true when we come to the exact determination of pure copper in the high-grade refined metal of the present day. Very slight traces of impurities (especially tellurium, selenium, bismuth, tin, arsenic and antimony) seriously injure the properties of copper, notably its electrical conductivity. Rare earth elements (REEs) have special properties that prompted their extensive use in high-tech applications. The demand for REE has, therefore, increased over the past years, resulting in the supply risk of the materials. Extraction from non-conventional low-grade ores, like easy-to-mine ion adsorption clays (IACs), by hydrometallurgical methods is being explored to supplement the supply of REEs. The extraction of REEs from low tenor IAC leach solutions requires enrichment using cost-effective methods such as precipitation. Therefore, the aim of this study was to understand the recovery of REEs from IAC leach solutions using various reagents for precipitation. In the first part of the study, recoveries of REEs from IAC leach solutions through direct precipitation using H2C2O4 and NH4HCO3, as well as antisolvent crystallization using C2H5OH, were predicted via thermodynamic modelling using OLI Stream Analyzer. Verification experiments were then conducted through the use of an agitated reactor. Simulation results showed that high yields of REEs were possible using each of the reagents, but large quantities of C2H5OH were required. Experimental results confirmed the high yields predicted from simulations. Precipitation with H2C2O4 was found to selectively recover REEs while rejecting Al. However, utilization of NH4HCO3 and C2H5OH resulted in the co-precipitation of Al. Furthermore, the yield of Y from antisolvent crystallization was significantly lower than the theoretical value. The product recovered from antisolvent crystallization consisted of well faceted, large crystalline particles, which filtered faster than the fine, amorphous REE carbonates recovered using NH4HCO3. REE oxalates were crystalline, larger than the REE carbonates and, overall, showed the highest filtration rate.

Many underground instabilities, such as excessive shield loading and roof falls, occur at longwall faces causing safety problems and production losses. Such instability problems are directly related to roof conditions which can be categorized using geological information. . However, most geologic information describing anomalies and variations of immediate and main roofs are not available before mining resulting in unexpected problems in a longwall face. It is apparent that the evaluation of these geologic anomalies provides a great benefit for longwall stability. The purpose of this study is to evaluate roof categories associated with geological anomalies employing fuzzy set theory. The evaluation is based on real-time monitoring information, such as shield leg pressure, developing load on shields, intervals of periodic weighting, and the ratio of developing loads during periodic to normal times. This paper introduces the application of fuzzy set theory for characterizing roof conditions and evaluating of roof similarities.

Talk some about your background. Mining, particularly coal, runs in the family. I come from a mining family, one generation re-moved. Both of my grandfathers worked in the coal mines. My mother?s father had worked as a coal miner in the South Hills area of Pittsburgh after coming to America from Croatia. My father?s father (who died of black lung long before I was born) had been born in America and worked as a mine foreman and superintendent in mines just outside the Pittsburgh area. My father often talked about when, as a child, he accompanied his father underground on Sundays to check the mine pumps. While I never expected to go into mining, I often read some of my grandfather?s books on mining technology that my father had kept. I started college at Penn State and drifted into mining engineering as my third declared major. I was finally realizing the importance of a career choice. I?ve never regretted that decision. One of my children, Mark, has followed me into mining engineering, much to my surprise and pride. Evidently, he had been listening to the many conversations I had with friends and colleagues in the industry and never considered any other career path. He has since married another mining engineer, Kray Davis Luxbacher, so we truly have a mining family and can talk mining when we get together. My other children are in more mundane lines of work and rapidly tire of the mining discussions. I?ve worked for operating companies: Pittsburgh Coal Co. (then a division of Consolidation Coal Co., and a company I believe both of my grandfathers had worked for), Island Creek Coal Co., and a research organization: Occidental Research Corp. I am now with Glenn Springs Holdings Inc., dealing with legacy issues (primarily environmental) related to Occidental?s previous mining operations (coal and minerals). As such, I have a broad view of the industry and the critical changes that are shaping our industry.

The 21st Annual American Mining Hall of Fame Awards Banquet sponsored by the Mining Foundation of the Southwest will be held at the Sheraton Tucson Hotel in Tucson, AZ on Saturday, Dec. 6, 2003. This year’s inductee, guest of honor and featured speaker at the banquet will be Thomas J. O’Neil, recently retired president and chief operating officer of Cleveland Cliffs Mining. Prior to Cliffs, O’Neil spent 10 years with Cyprus Minerals. He was also professor and head of the Department of Mining and Geological Engineering at the University of Arizona. As representatives of mining heritage, the Hall of Fame will induct James Boyd and Thomas F. Walsh. Walsh discovered a rich gold telluride vein in Ouray, CO, which became the Camp Bird gold mine. Boyd was a former director of the U.S. Bureau of Mines, vice president of Kennecott Copper and later president of Copper Range.

During a recent National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health field evaluation of a newly designed filtration and pressurization system for an enclosed cab of a surface drill, it was determined that the drill operator's respirable-dust exposure was significantly increased during time periods when the cab door was opened to manually guide another section of drill steel into place to achieve additional cutting depth. Although no dust cloud was visible when the door was opened to perform this task, the drill operator's exposure was documented (over a three-day test period) to be nine times higher than when the cab door was closed. Even at this higher respirable-dust concentration, the drill operator's exposure remained well below the permissible exposure limit governed by the federal dust standard; however, an alternative method is being investigated to guide the drill steel in place in order to eliminate this increased exposure. .

Syferfontein Colliery, part of the Sasol group of companies which specialises in the field of petro-chemical production, was established in 1990. The mine is situated about 150 km east of Johannesburg, South Africa. Two coal seams are mined, utilising two 75 m3 draglines, shovels and a fleet of 177 ton rear dump trucks. The mine will reach its full production capacity of seven million tonnes per annum in 1992. During the planning period, prior to the establishment of the mine, management were confronted with the unstable socio-political environment in South Africa which could jeopardise the eventual success of the mine. They consequently conducted a strategic planning exercise to determine guidelines for mine planning to improve the chances of success in this unstable third world environment.The strategic guidelines formed the basis for specific actions taken during the planning and commissioning of the mine. Specific actions were taken in the field of operating cost, labour relations, working environment, logistics and the general environment. First results indicate that these actions have played a major role in the success of the mine to-date. This process can be utilised by others facing similar or even totally different uncertainties.

Economical dewatering of ultra-fine (minus 74 m) clean coal slurry produced in column flotation to a 20 percent or lower moisture level will be an important step in successful implementation of the advanced fine coal cleaning processes. The main objective of the present study was to evaluate efficiency and effectiveness of three dewatering techniques, namely, hyperbaric, vacuum and screen bowl centrifuge, in dewatering of ultra-fine (D50 ~ 25 m) clean coal slurry produced by the `Ken-Flote' columns operating at the Powell Mountain Coal Company, St. Charles, Virginia. he hyperbaric filter using 3 bar pressure and 165o cake formation angle, provided a filter cake with 23.6percent moisture with a throughput of 800 Kg/m2-h and air consumption of 868 Nm3/t (460 scfm/t). The vacuum filter with 30 percent submergence provided a filter cake with 27.8 percent moisture with a throughput of 122 Kg/m2-h. The screen bowl centrifuge provided a dewatered product containing 32.9 percent moisture at a feed rate of 450 Kg/hr, however, the solids capture was only65 percent. Addition of 1 Kg/t of a cationic surfactant provided filter cakes with 19.1 percent, 23percent, and 34 percent moisture using hyperbaric, vacuum, and centrifuge, respectively. Similarly, addition of 0.5 Kg/ton of copper chloride lowered filter cake moisture to 20.7 percent and 24.8percent, using hyperbaric and vacuum. With the centrifuge no improvement in filter cake moisture was noted. However, use of 80 Kg/ton of `orimulsion' in the centrifuge provided dewatered product containing 26 percent moisture, and the solids capture increased from 65 to 95 percent. The dewatered product appeared dry and was easily handleable.

During the past decade the genesis of the lead- and zincdeposits of the Mississippi valley has received special attention from many distinguished observers. But their united egorts, instead of settling all disputed questions, have, in many respects, involl-ed the general problem in greater uncertainty than would be thought possible under the circumstances. In place of the harmony of opinion that might be expected, there is unexpected disagreement, largely due to the fact that, instead of giving attention to a possible multiplicity of ore-producing conditions among the different deposits, the attempt has been made to bring all deposits under a single genetic head. To a new observer of the lead- and zinc-deposits of the Mississippi valley, it appears at the outset that all the deposits cannot possibly have had the same genesis. In fact, different modes of origin have been often asserted for the ore-bodies, but the difficulty has been that each writer has referred them either all to one category or all to another, and no intermediate ground has been considered possible. Such a position now appears to be clearly untenable. The opinion that, in the deposits of the region under consideration, the ore-materials represent original depositions, made at the time the rocks themselves were formed, is no longer held by any authority, and therefore need not be considered here. "Among the methods proposed for spent activated carbon regeneration, the most acceptable is, thermal reactivation, because in this case the existing equipment for manufacture of activated carbon can be adapted for this purpose.In order to conduct the process of thermal re-activation of spent activated carbon directly at gold mills, a fullscale drum-type furnace with external electric heating has been developed, i.e. EPV-300 model with a throughput rate of 50 to 120 kg/hour. Its use ensures restoration of the adsorption properties of carbon up to the level of fresh activated carbon with an insignificant (by 0.7%) decrease in strength and with a high (95% to 97%) yield of reactivated carbon.During the recent years, activated powder carbon has been extensively used in flotation processes for treating polymetallic ores at ore treating plants to improve recoveries of main metals (copper, lead, nickel, etc.).Especially large volumes of activated powder carbon are used at the Talnakh concentrator of the Norilsk Mining and Metallurgical Complex in Russia for absorption of residual flotation reagents from recycled water in order to ensure efficient selective separation of minerals with similar physical and chemical properties.IntroductionSorption technology based on active carbons use starts being applied in such an important in the widest sense of the word strategical branch of economics as non-ferrous metallurgy. Thus since the middle ninetieth Russian gold extraction industry began to apply widely the processes of sorption from pulps and solutions by means of high-resistant granulated active carbons. That provided the start of gold ore minefield exploration, increasing of gold extraction from the ore and reducing its loss with the ""tails"" of process. At present more than 40% of Russian gold is extracted with the help of sorption technologies [1].Another field of active carbons application in non-ferrous metallurgy is the processes of non-ferrous ores floatation at ore-mining and processing enterprise. For that purpose powdered (less than l00µm) active carbons are used for providing the effective selection of minerals with similar physicochemical properties. Using alternating tension-compression straining, the hardening of magnesium oxide single crystals was studied up to large stresses and strains. At 0.25 pct plastic strain amplitude, the hardening curve is approximately linear with slope 25,000 psi from the shear yield stress, 7 to 8000 psi, to 35,000psi. Above this stress, the slope decreases. The strain hardening behavior of MgO is considered qualitatively similar to that of metal single crystals. The relatively high stress attainable by strain hardening is associated apparently with the high yield stress on the cross-slip system, (001) <110>. Cleavage fracture during testing is uncommon. It is argued that the centers of high internal stress at glide band intersections, at which cracks tend to nucleate, are dispersed by cyclic strain. Special features of the glide band structure produced by cyclic strain and revealed by dislocation etch pits, support this view. Strain hardened MgO has mechanical properties greatly superior to the as-received material: yield stress, greater than 100,000 psi; elongation to fracture about 1 pct. A material is said to strain harden if the yield stress increases with an increment of plastic strain. This definition is usually applied for straining done in one direction, but is also applicable when the strain direction is periodically reversed, Fig. 1. For certain metal single crystals, data are available which permit a comparison of the hardening behavior for cyclic straining and for tension straining.&apos;-4 With certain qualifications, these data show that the same processes of hardening are operative in each type of test.5 Despite this fact, the importance of the technique is not immediately evident, although tension-compression studies of the common metals appear to suggest some deficiencies in theories of strain hardening developed exclusively on the basis of tensile tests. However, a recent observation suggests that the cyclic straining method may be very useful for studying semibrittle crystals in which large plastic strains are not accessible in unidirectional testing. The observation is that zinc crystals, when strained in tension-compression at -52°C, do not fail by cleavage at low stress (-500 psi)6 as they do in tension, but harden to a limiting stress of more than 5000 psi over a total plastic strain of about 600 pct.2 An important characteristic of the behavior of zinc crystals is the high stress, relative to the yield stress, attainable by strain hardening. By comparison, the hardening of aluminum single crystals tested by an identical technique saturates at 1100 psi. This difference is best explained by the cross-slip hypothesis of dynamic recovery.7,8 In zinc, cross slip is difficult because of the high yield stress for glide on planes other than the basal plane in the < 1120 > zone. The present work was undertaken in order to test whether these methods and ideas are applicable to other materials. Magnesium oxide single crystals, in common with most crystals of the rock-salt structure, deform plastically but fail by cleavage after a small strain when tested in tension. It was hoped that larger strains would be attained using tension-compression. There is, in addition, evidence 8a which shows that slip on the probable cross system, (001) < 110>, is difficult in magnesium oxide; it may therefore be possible to attain high stresses by strain hardening. 1) EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Experimental methods used in this study were based in part on techniques reported in papers of Stokes, Johnston, and Li.&apos; MgO blocks, purchased from Norton Co., were used without further annealing. Specimens were cleaved to dimensions approximately 0.125 in. sq and 1 in. in length. The gage section, formed by chemical polishing, was sprinkled with 280 mesh silicon carbide particles in order to introduce fresh dislocations. The crystals were then cemented into cylindrical aluminum adapters and clamped in an Instron testing machine. One of two alternating straining programs was used. In the first, total cross-head travel was established and increased in steps after various numbers of cycles. In the second, a capacitance gage was used to directly measure the elongation of the specimen and the crosshead was controlled so as to keep the plastic strain amplitude constant. The straining was always symmetrical with respect to the initial, zero strain condition. While both procedures produce strain hardening, only the latter permits a measure of the total plastic strain so that hardening curves may be drawn. Constant plastic strain amplitude tests were done

A method is given for predicting the complete gravity drainage characteristics of arbitrarily long columns from centrifuge drainage measurements on reconstituted core samples. Oil residuals corresponding to hundreds of years of normal gravity depletion can be obtained in a few hours on the centrifuge. The gravity flow rate at any stage of the depletion process may be determined from the time correlation derived, and experimentally checked, in this study. INTRODUCTION Apart from the original observations of Muskat et al1, research publications2,3,4 on the subject of gravity drainage have been largely concerned with establishing in detail the saturation, S as a function of the height, z, in a draining column at any given time, t. Some form of numerical integration must be employed to obtain production rates and cumulative production even when S(z, t) is known. Furthermore, the relevant experimental work has been concentrated on drainage of a single wetting liquid from unconsolidated media. Since oil production usually concerns the drainage of a partially wetting liquid from consolidated media, in the presence of connate water, and since it is unlikely that sufficient information exists to establish S(z, t) in detail for any natural reservoir, the published research work appears to be, at best, only qualitatively applicable to production problems. With this in mind, the present study was undertaken by the writer. Experiments were planned whose results would have two advantages over existing measurements: 1. Observations were to be made on specific reservoir rock, reconstituted with formation water and formation oil. This would reduce their generality, from the research viewpoint, but increase their utility for production purposes. 2. The measurements were to be self-integrating, i.e., the phenomena were to be described and interpreted in terms of cumulative results. THEORETICAL DEVELOPMENT It was commonly known that centrifuging a liquid bearing porous medium increases the drainage rates and minimizes capillary end effects. The specific problem lay in selecting an acceleration, a, such that the mean residual saturation of a model cylinder was equal to the residual saturation of an arbitrarily long prototype column when the latter was drained by earth gravity alone. A large opencast gold mining company in Africa had just completed a feasibility study for an expansion of the operations. A traditional net present value project valuation methodology had been used that showed a very positive net present value (NPV). The project team had conducted a qualitative risk assessment that identified and logged all potential project risks and had subjectively incorporated &apos;risk&apos; via the discount rate and other assumption contingencies around gold price expectations, operating parameters, etc. Management requested that an independent quantitative risk modelling approach be adopted to obtain a better understanding of the impact of risk on the overall project valuation and confidence level in the final valuation. A detailed project valuation model was configured in the Cyest Carbon Modelling Technology platform, and the stochastic modelling module used to perform the Monte Carlo simulations. Analysis of historical operational performance data relating to actual achievements versus planned and budget determined the historical variability of the underlying parameters as well as variance to budget. This was done at a detailed level for mining rates and costs, processing rate, costs and recovery, and other operational efficiency measures. External market assumptions relating to gold price, exchange rate, and inflation were modelled and the dependency between them modelled using a copula. This case study will demonstrate the approach taken to building and populating the quantitative risk model and the overall results of the Monte Carlo simulation. The final valuation demonstrated that the project had a 44 percent probability of an NPV less than zero i.e. a 44 percent chance of project finance loss.

The stress-strain behavior of zinc single crystals was measured over a strain range of 10-6 to 10-2. The phenomenon of macroyielding was observed in detail and plastic strains were detected at almost zero-stress. Closed hysteresis loops were observed during loading and unloading in the strain region of about 10-5. From the hysteresis a frictional stress on the dislocation of about 6 psi was obtained. A preliminary analysis indicates that impurities are primarily responsible for the friction. Nonelastic Strains as much as 10 -4 were recovered depending on the amount of prior deformation. Part of the recovered strain occurs instantaneously upon unloading and the remainder occurs at zero stress. The time dependence of the recovered strain was measured. THIS investigation is concerned with the details of plastic deformation preceding the ordinary yield point as measured with the usual strain sensitivity of about 10-4. The approach leads to internal friction observations in the hitherto neglected frequency range below 10-1 cycles per sec. It is believed that if the phenomenon of macroscopic yielding is to be understood, then the stress-strain curve in the neighborhood of the macroyield point should be greatly magnified. It may then be possible to determine whether macroscopic yielding is a unique event or whether it is a process which begins gradually at a lower stress. In the case of low-carbon steel a unique event obviously occurs at the macroscopic yield point as indicated by a drop in the load, but copper appears to exhibit a gradual transition from the elastic to the plastic state. In zinc the yield point is rather abrupt although the data indicates that some plastic deformation precedes large scale yielding.&apos; One of the purposes of this investigation is to determine whether there is an abrupt transition from the preyield microstrain region to the region of macroscopic deformation. Such a rapid transition would support the concept that there is a critical stress for yielding. The concept that yielding is a unique event associated with such phenomenon as activating a Frank-Read source, freeing the dislocation from solute atoms, dislocations cutting through dislocations, or dislocations moving freely by one another, has been expounded widely on theoretical grounds. It is hoped that highly sensitive measurements of strain in the neighborhood of the macroscopic yield point will shed some light on the event known as the "Yield Point". EXPERIMENTAL METHOD 1) Specimens—High-purity zinc was cast into spherical graphite moulds in air and grown into spherical single crystals by the Bridgman method under a positive pressure of Argon gas. Spectro-graphic analysis of cleaved sections from four crystals showed a purity of 99.994 pet Zn. The specimens were acid machined with an 1/8 in. gage section in a form similar to those used by Parker and co-workers.2 Bausch type grips were fastened to the specimen by Epon VI adhesive. The specimens were oriented so that only [1120] (0001) slip occurred. Fig. 1 shows two of the specimens in the grips. Prior to each test, the gage section of the specimen was given a concentrated HNO3 chemical polish followed by alcohol rinsing and air blast drying. 2) Test Method- The shear tests were performed on an Instron testing machine and the experimental set-up was made very "hard". Strain could be measured to a sensitivity of 10 -6 by means of a capacitance gage extensometer. The design and calibration of this type of extensometer to measure microstrain, as applied to pure shear and tensile tests of metals, will be the subject of a separate paper—therefore, only a brief account will be presented here. FoR a number of years an intensive study has been made to improve the blast-furnace practice at Copperhill not only as to cost% but to provide a good grade of gas for the acid plants. This study took us back to the fundamentals of successful pyrite smelting; namely, a blast furnace working on a clean sulfide ore, free from fines, and the use of quartz high in silica as a flux. In 1919, the quality of the flux was improved and its effect on the metallurgy was very marked. To improve the practice further, it was necessary to work out some method of treatment for the sulfide fines and the siliceous and refractory ores, other than in the blast furnace. A series of milling tests indicated that these products could be successfully treated by differential flotation, and in 1922 plans were made and a flotation plant built. It was estimated that the flotation plant would deliver to the smelter 40 to 50 tons of concentrates per day; the problem was what to do with these concentrates. It was out of the question to attempt to smelt them in a blast furnace because of the dust losses and because our practice demands a charge free from fines for satisfactory operation. There is no custom smelter in the vicinity to which concentrates may be sold, pending the time when the tonnage will be sufficient to warrant roasters and a reverbatory furnace. Sintering and nodulizing were investigated but neither method fitted into our scheme of metallurgy. A close study of the converter practice was then made to see if some method could not be evolved to smelt this tonnage of concentrates in a converter without preliminary treatment. At that time, the converter installation consisted of two 12-ft. Great Falls converters, which were handling 12 to 14 per cent. matte. The heat balance of the converters working with 12 to 14 per cent. matte was more than sufficient to smelt the contemplated tonnage of concentrates but the mechanical difficulties of feeding fines into the Great Falls converter made the use of this type of converter impractical. While there was no opportunity to experiment with the Pierce-Smith converter, equipped with a Garr gun, theoretically it seemed practical

The history of mine safety legislation in this country is also a history of mine explosions. Nearly every piece of safety legislation that has been introduced or amended has resulted from some type of a disaster. When coal was first discovered and mined, it was extracted from along outcrops. As the coal became depleted near the surface, underground mining developed. When the first mine penetrated the outcrop, a great number of problems developed, many of which remain with us today. One of those problems is the potential for mine ignitions and explosions. Naturally, when underground mining progressed a few feet into the outcrop, some type of artificial light was needed. Early accounts of mining in Spain, Italy, Japan, and Great Britain indicate that torches served to light the mines. Later, candles were used, and still later, earthern oil lamps containing fish oil were used. As workings got deeper, explosions began to occur. When one did occur it was thought to be the work of goblins or the devil. As explosions became more frequent, it became very obvious that the use of open flames for lighting was very dangerous. A substitute was sought. Dried fish skins which gave off a weak phosphorescent light were tried. A mixture of flour and lime made from oyster shells called Canton phosphorous was also tried unsuccessfully. Fireflies in a bottle were also used.
