I. CORT'S INVENTIONS. Under this head, it is unnecessary here to enter into details. The facts have been repeatedly published, and a brief outline of them will be sufficient for my present purpose. . The Drake-Rivertree area lies in the far north east of the New England district of New South Wales. Drake is some 500 miles north of Sydney by road and 36 miles west of Lismore. Rivertree is situated 24 miles north of Drake.The Drake deposits were first worked in 1878 for gold which occurred in a very fine state in ferruginous gossan but at depth copper ore became more significant. The lodes at Rivertree, discovered in 1887, were worked for silver but mixed sulphides became more prominent in deeper levels.Several mines operated at each centre and each locality smelted its own ore.The mines at both centres were operated sporadically for many years though production was not particularly substantial.A number of the larger mining companies have shown a recent interest in this mining field with special emphasis on the Drake locality.GENERAL GEOLOGYThe two mining centres are situated to the north and south respectively of a belt of Permian marine sediments and volcanics similar to, and probably representing an easterly extension of, the rocks of the Emmaville district further west.E. REGULAR production of chrome in Turkey started in 1860 with the operation of the Bursa deposits (5, Fig. I). Others were discovered at Makri, near Fethiye (3, Fig. I). For 33 years Turkey remained the principal source of this mineral. While new discoveries were coming in elsewhere, Turkey's output declined until 1921, as a result of four successive wars, which ruined the economics of the country. In 1927 a revival came with the production of 18,000 tons. In that year the Société Minière de Fethiye was formed. This company now operates mines in the Vilayets of Aydin, Denizli, Burdur and Mentese, and it has reached a maximum production of between 80,000 and 90,000 tons annually. The Turkish output therefore increased from 29,000 tons in 1930 to 55,000 tons in 1931; and to 119,009 tons in 1934. The second phase in the increase in chrome production in Turkey came about in 1935, when the Government decided to reorganize and control the mineral industry of the country according to the principles of "government control" of the present regime. Up to that time the mineral resources of the country had been exploited by private concerns. In 1935, the M.T.A. (Maden Tetkik ve Arama) Institute (Institute of Mining Research and Geological Survey) was established by the Government to do the geological and geophysical survey work and discover new mineral resources for the country. Before the establishment of the M.T.A. Institute, the chief chrome-producing region was Fethiye (3 and 4, Fig. I). As a result of the extensive work of this bureau, many new chrome deposits have been discovered and are now in production. The operational field of the mineral industry was given to Eti Bank, another Government-sponsored and Government-controlled establishment. Eti Bank gradually took over the exploitation of existing mines by purchasing them from privately operated companies. Attention was first given to the Zonguldak collieries and to the different chrome deposits scattered over the country. The Guleman mines (14, Fig. 1) were developed and put in operation in 1936. Since then the bulk of Turkish chrome output has come from this mine, which yields the highest grade ore in the world (averaging 52 per cent Cr2O3). In 1939, the recently discovered chrome deposits to the north of Eskisehir went into production, yielding ore having a Cr2O3 content of 51 to 52 per cent. Today, more than ever, the efforts of both the M.T.A. Institute and the Eti Bank are concentrated on finding new deposits and placing them in operation. There are still many promising regions of the country that merit systematic surveying and prospecting for chrome ores. Intorducing the hypothesis that the cause ,òi spontaneous combustion of coal is depending un the accumulation of heat produced by its oxidation, the authors derived the equation expressing the temperature change in a heap i fine coal. To solve the equation, thermal conductivity, specific heat and rate of heat ,eneration of fine coal (-48 mesh) were measured at various temperatures in the range _'0-65¦C. The equation was solved numerically and the volume of fine coal which would ignite spontaneously was estimated as the function of ambient temperature. Using 170 Kg of fine coal, everal experiments for confirmation were conducted. At the ambient temperatures of 60¦C nd 50¦C, coal began to fire spontaneously brut 00 and 110 hours later respectively. In an earlier paper1 one of the authors called attention to the significance of the relative free energies of grain boundaries and interphase boundaries in alloys in determining the shape and distribution of micro-constituents. The ratio of the interphase and inter-crystalline boundary energies (that is, —?12, where ?12 is the energy of the interface between a crystal of phase 1 and a crystal of phase 2, and ?11 is the energy of the boundary between two crystals of phase 1) will be denoted by F. It is this ratio that determines, by the simple triangle of forces relation, the dihedral angle, ?, of phase 2 where it adjoins a boundary between two grains of phase 1. On a metallographic sample various angles are actually obtained because of the random orientation of the plane of observation, but the statistically most frequent angle is the true one. These basic principles were discussed in detail in the earlier paper. The experiments described below show the effect of both composition and temperature on ? and T for some alloys containing a liquid phase, and provide data on the rate of approach to the equilibrium angles in both solid and liquid phases. All the alloys were melted in a graphite crucible and cast into ingots 3/4 by 11/8 in. cross-section. Some of the aluminum alloys consisted of two immiscible liquids from which uniform castings could not be obtained. The amount of liquid phase varied locally to a considerable extent and the analyses were meaningless. Nevertheless, the composition of the liquid would not differ from that in an alloy of the intended gross composition, and the synthetic composition of the alloys was therefore used in considering the surface energy results. The ingots were given initial deformation by cold-rolling to 50 pct reduction, annealed, and given a second 50 pct reduction prior to cutting into small samples for heat treatment at the times and temperatures subsequently reported. The resulting micro-samples were carefully prepared metallographically and examined at magnifications of 650, 1280, or 2500. The objectives used were 21X, 0.40 NA (dry); 41X, 0.65 NA (dry); and 80X, 1.40 NA (oil emulsion). The appropriate angles were measured by rotation of the stage of a Bausch and Lomb metallograph to align the appropriate boundaries successively with a cross-hair in a micrometer eyepiece. About 250 angles were measured on each phase. Though the angles were read to 1°, the accuracy is probably not above 3°, because of uncertainty in setting the cross-hair tangent to the sometimes curved boundary. The corners of very small particles, particularly in early stages of adjustment after cold-rolling, were difficult to measure and the results were slightly dependent on the magnification used (compare Fig 1-C and 1-D). Experiments with various industrial cathodes ranging from 35 wt.% to 100 wt.% graphitic and fully graphitized carbons were carried out in a laboratory aluminum electrolysis cell. Sodium and cryolite bath penetration into the cathode samples was measured by XRD and SEM-EDS analysis. For a higher cryolite ratio in the bath, the cathodes with lower graphitic carbons exhibited more sodium penetration than the fully graphitized. The increased graphitization in the cathode materials can reduce Na, NaF and Na3AlF6 penetration. SEM-EDS inspection reveals that the sodium and fluorides penetration within the cathode samples has different patterns for varying graphitization of the carbon materials. XRD quantitative analysis indicates that there is a large percentage of Na3AlF6 in the penetrated bath. The results can provide useful information for quality evaluation of the industrial cathode products.

Environmental and cost pressures sparked renewed interest in gravity separation. Industrial sands in Mexico are generally processed by screening, desliming, and flotation. Gravity separation with spirals was evaluated as an alternative to flotation in order to lower operating costs and decrease water pollution. Outstanding operating results are obtained in glass and foundry sand operations, plus a more competitive position for Mexican producers due to lower operating costs. Coal fines, generally recovered by flotation, have the same cost and environmental advantages when processed with spirals.

In both the Flat River district of southeast Missouri and the Joplin district of southwest Missouri the lead concentrates are of very high grade, free of arsenic, antimony and bismuth, and contain no gold and very little silver. The general practice in both districts is to smelt the concentrates containing 70 to 85 per cent lead on Scotch hearths, to recover 70 to 85 per cent of the lead, and then smelt in a blast furnace the slag formed in the Scotch hearths to bring the total recovery of lead from lead concentrates to over 97.5 per cent. At the lead smelter of the St. Joseph Lead Co. at Herculaneum, Mo., no Scotch hearths are used. In the other smelters in the district the blast furnace plays a minor role to the Scotch hearth . The concentrates produced from the Flat River district are either table concentrates or flotation concentrates containing: Both types of concentrates are received at Herculaneum in box cars after being sampled. Great care is taken in weighing and sampling of cars of concentrates and in the determination of moisture and lead contents. The concentrates are unloaded into bins by an adaptation of scoop grain unloader. Four men unload and sweep a 40 to 45-ton box car of concentrates in 30 minutes. The same grade of concentrates is received each day and no metal-bearing fluxes are available. The problem is to get as high a recovery as possible as cheaply as possible from the high-grade lead concentrates produced by the company's concentrating mills. Sintering The bulk of the sulphur is removed from the concentrates and the fine concentrate particles are agglomerated by double roasting on typical Dwight and Lloyd sintering machines.

The current National commitment to expanding the human presence into the solar system will clearly require major facilities in Earth orbit or possibly on the moon. Such facilities will need large amounts of materials for structural modules, life support, propulsion, and shielding. The heavy transportation costs in fuel required to lift materials from the Earth's surface make a terrestrial-based space system inherently inefficient. A more cost-effective approach would be to provide as much of the required materials as possible from other bodies in space not having the high cost of Earth launch. This paper identifies potential targets for space-based resource utilization, constraints on exploitation, and relative benefits of various sources.

"The size distribution of the muckpile formed as a result of open pit blasting operations has a considerable effect on the efficiency of loading, hauling, and crushing. Various researchers have developed specialized computer software that uses image analysis methods for determining the size distribution of the muckpile. However, these methods have some limitations. One of the most important of these limitations is that the very fine fragments in the muckpile cannot be used in the size distribution calculation. In this study, 18 test blasts in total were carried out in two limestone quarries belonging to Batiçim Corp. in Izmir, Turkey. A new model was developed in order to ensure that very fine fragments are used in the size distribution calculation. The size distributions of the test blasts were calculated by both the Wipfrag computer program and the new model. Correlations were established between the muckpile size distributions determined by both methods and the parameters determining the efficiency of the loader. IntroductionThe size distribution of the muckpile formed as a result of open pit blasting operations has a considerable effect on the efficiency of loading, hauling, and crushing. Various researchers have established certain correlations for predicting the efficiency of the operations according to the muckpile size distribution so that production can be carried out economically (Tunstall and Bearman, 1997; Nielsen and Kristiansen, 1996; Workman and Eloranta, 2004; Michaud and Blanchet, 1996; Frimpong, Kabongo, and Davies, 1996; Osanloo and Hekmat, 2005; Molotilov et al., 2010). In these studies, the 50% passing size (X50) is generally used. These methods rely on the correct measurement of the size distribution of the muckpile formed by the blast. The most reliable measurement method would be to subject the entire muckpile to a sieve analysis, but this is obviously impracticable. Therefore, computational method based on image analysis have been developed. These include IPACS (Dahlhielm, 1996), Tucips (Havermann and Vogt, 1996), Fragscan (Schleifer and Tessier, 1996), Cias (Downs and Kettunen, 1996), GoldSize (Kleine annd Cameron, 1996), Wipfrag (Maerz, Palangio, and Franklin, 1996), Split Desktop (Kemeny, 1994), PowerSieve (Chung and Noy, 1996), and Fragalyst (Raina et al., 2002). In these methods, the size limits of the fragments forming the material are determined by image analysis on photographs of the muckpile. However, the computer software has some limitations. It does not take into account the third dimension of the muckpile, nor the size distribution of very fine fragments. In particular, the fragment size ranges below 2.5 to 3 cm cannot be determined, and therefore these cannot be included in the muckpile size distribution. However, the muckpile formed by a bench blast contains a wide range of particle sizes (Tosun et al., 2015)."

The Cornwallis Fold Belt in the Canadian Arctic Archipelago contains numerous Mississippi Valley-type (MVT) Zn- Pb occurrences and the world-class Polaris deposit. The occurrences are mainly hosted by the dolostone in the Thumb Mountain Formation which spreads over 25000 km2. Success in exploration requires further understanding of the genesis of these occurrences and an assessment of their parentage with the giant Polaris deposit. Syn-sulfide dolomites in regional occurrences share C-O-Sr isotopic characteristics similar with Polaris dolomites, indicating warm basinal brines enriched in 87Sr. The dolomites and sphalerites contain fluid inclusions with ice-melting temperature between ?45° and ?25°C, which is significantly lower than for most MVT districts in the world (?30° and ?10°C). These characteristics indicate that all the Cornwallis occurrences were produced by fluids of the same sources and/or aquifers. The deposit size was largely controlled by the rate and duration of the metal-carrying fluid flow, and by the availability of reduced sulfur at the site of mineralization.

Sulphuric acid addition is a major driver of the economics in the processing of nickel laterite ores by high pressure acid leaching (HPAL). Understanding the optimal acid addition rate is essential for the success of any HPAL operation, and this is especially true at Ambatovy, where the composition of the feed tends to vary significantly on a day-to-day basis. Most studies on the effect of acid on nickel extraction in HPAL have used laboratory testwork as their basis. Although these studies are invaluable in assessing the economics of a new project, they are limited by the range of ore composition that can be tested and the differences between the operation of the laboratory equipment and the commercial plant. To enable optimization of the acid addition at Ambatovy, operating data from the HPAL operation were obtained using OSISoft’s PI system and the data from several periods were examined to develop relationships between acid addition and nickel extraction. The initial relationships from 2014 focused on the acid required to achieve a target nickel extraction of 95%, with aluminum and magnesium in ore and feed slurry solids content as the major variables. As Ambatovy ramped up through 2015 and 2016, the calculated acid requirement was further refined to address the effects of HPAL temperature and retention time, and the oxidizing/reducing characteristics of the ore, and to generate acid requirement relationships as a function of ranges of nickel extraction. These relationships supported raising the target nickel extraction to 96% and enabled the development of an economic model between acid addition and nickel extraction.

The shrinking core model for coarse particle leaching has been generally accepted as describing the leaching of a copper oxide or sulfide ore. However, when a mixed oxide/sulfide ore-is leached this model can not be used in its simple form because at least two and possibly three separate leaching processes are occurring simultaneously (dissolution of oxide copper minerals, secondary copper minerals and primarily copper minerals). It has been impossible to isolate their individual leaching curves from the recovery/time curve generated by the column leach test. This paper describes a tests program carried out at the Groupo Mexico, Mexicana de Cobre's La Caridad operation in which the individual recovery/time curves for the leaching of copper oxide mineral, secondary copper mineral and primary copper minerals were developed from standard column leach tests. Once the individual recovery/time curves were developed scale-up of the column leach test results to the commercial heap leaching operation is possible by using the shrinking core model.

In July 1994 the Premier, John Fahey MP, announced that the New South Wales Government would make available a total of $40 million over six years in new funding for the Department of Mineral Resources. These funds are to be applied directly to the generation of regional geological and geophysical information. The Government's initiative known as `Discovery 2000', is aimed at providing a major boost to the exploration industry. The Government expects new discoveries to be made and new mines to be developed because of the initiative and, perhaps, the first ever commercial oil or gas production in New South Wales. The Government's return will come from increased economic activity, and from the increased royalty return from higher levels of production. Quality information is the key to successful exploration. In the highly competitive business of mineral and petroleum exploration high quality regional geological and geophysical information improve both the efficiency and effectiveness of the area selection or project generation process. Using the `needle in the hay stack' analogy, Discovery 2000 will vastly improve industry's chances of finding the haystacks. It is up to the mineral and petroleum industries to find their respective `needles'. Careful target area selection is probably the most critical factor in mineral exploration. The ability to select the most prospective areas, or to identify prospectivity that others have failed to recognise, can make all the difference between success and failure. Government geological surveys clearly have a crucial role to play in providing the geoscientific information infrastructure that companies must have if they are to make the discoveries this country needs to pay its way in the world. It is the regional information generated by Governments that sets the scene for efficient exploration. This regional information includes regional aeromagnetics and radiometrics and gravity, regional geological mapping and tectonic analysis, and geoscientific databases. The New South Wales Department of Mineral Resources (by various names) has been providing such information for over 100 years and has led the way in many aspects of the generation and dissemination of geological, geophysical and metallogenic Information.

This paper is based on the accident prevention pro-gram carried out in the coal mines of Alberta. It defines the role of the Alberta Mines Branch and of The Work-men's Compensation Board, and relates how a safety pro-gram was initiated. The formation of the Alberta Class 1 Mining Safety Council is also described. The responsibilities of both management and the individual worker are then outlined, and the main features of a successful accident prevention program are delineated. T HE purpose of this paper is not to repeat generalities and platitudes about industrial safety, but rather to relate the experience of Alberta coal mines during the past number of years in their efforts to keep accidents to a minimum. It has been learned from experience that many basic principles are as sound today as they were 20 years ago. How-ever the complexities of modern mining methods and the modern man or miner have created problems that did not exist then.
