Most of the gold in the earth's crust occurs as finely-dispersed gold and accounts for much of the gold lost in extraction processes and during exploration for gold. The Compositions, sizes, and morphology of fine gold particles (0.01 to 10 ~m in diameter) were studied with high resolution electron microscopy coupled with electron microprobe and microdiffraction devices, using colloidal carbon replicas. Correlations were made between fine gold, mineral associations and ore genesis. The results provide qualitative information on the proportions of finely dispersed, invisible and visible gold distribution in ores. Such knowledge is fundamental when planning an optimum technological recovery process.

A series of austenitic heat resistant Fe-Ni-Cr-Al alloys with different nickel contents have been investigated at 1100 ° C and 25, 50, 50,100 hours in S/0 bearing atmospheres. Before sulphidation test, the specimens were annealed in argon at 1250 °C for 8 hrs. Weight changes were measured using an automatic thermo gravimetric analyzer and corrosion products were analyzed by scanning electro microscope (SEM), energy dispersive X-ray spectrometry (EDAX), X-ray diffraction and optical microscope. The results showed that sulphidation resistance decreased with increasing nickel content. Internal sulphidation controlled by gaseous transport through cracks and pores and the formation of internal sulphide increased when liquid sulphides formed on the surface.

After the Loma Prieta Earthquake, which caused major damage to viaducts in the Bay Area, the California Department of Transportation set up a test programme for foundation piles. Funderingstechnieken Verstraeten B.V., beter known as Fundex, was approached, since one of the piling systems of Fundex, named Tubex, is extremely suitable in areas sensitive to earthquakes and we were very much interested to prove the capabilities of this piling system. Equipment For the installation of Tubex and Tubex grout-injection piles special piling equipment is required. Since our company is not only a contractor, but also a designer and manufacturer of piling equipment, all special equipment for our range of foundation techniques is designed and built by our own piling equipment department. The cultural ages of man have been defined in terms of smelting and hence as a prerequisite, mining for example the iron age and the bronze age. There could be no separation of the man from his role as the technologist (miner/ smelter) for his early metal working efforts were to enhance survival. In the millenniums since, the artisan specialist developed and the technologist emerged. The process is a sort of technical natural selection. From the generalist hunter, gatherer, miner, metalworker we advanced over the centuries with great 'steps for mankind' to the series of specialists each largely intent on securing his/her technical functions from the curious assaults of other tribal members. The relevance of all this to the theme, 'Past, present and future of the Victorian mining and metallurgical industries', is simply that people have always, and will always, be the moving force in our industries. It is the effectiveness of people now and in the future that this paper addresses.

The history, geological setting and local geology of the Magnum vein system, 100 miles west of Fort Nelson in northeastern British Columbia, are described. The system comprises a number of quartz-ankerite veins, mineralized with chalcopyrite and lesser pyrite, occurring in a steep northeastly zone of deformation and subsequent dike intrusion within otherwise little-deformed Precambrian sedimentary rocks. In April of 1970, Churchill Copper Corporation began producing copper concentrates in a 750-tpd mill fed from the Magnum mine.

VAN Arkel 1 prepared ductile tantalum by the thermal decompoiition of tantalum pentachloride on a resistively heated wire (2000° C) in an evacuated bulb maintained at 100°C. Burgers and Basart2'3 observed the formation of a mixture of tantalum carbide and free metal when a carbon deposition base was used. campbel14 suggested the thermal decomposition of the iodide if a lower decomposition tem- perature was desired. To date, the details for preparing high-purity iodide tantalum have not been disclosed. EXPERIMENTAL The tantalum to be purified was symmetrically placed around the clear quartz deposition surface centrally located within a 64 mm cylindrical Vycor bulb. "INTRODUCTION During the recent war attention was directed to prevent the destruction of American industries by sabotage. By Executive order of Lay 19, 1942, the Bureau of Mines was required to conduct investigations and make recommendations that would prevent loss of production of essential war minerals. The Health and Safety Branch of the Bureau of Lines was able to extend its activities with minimum loss of time to include security surveys of the important mineral facilities in the United States.A Mineral Production Security Division was established in the Health and Safety Branch with funds appropriated for that purpose by Congress in April 1942. From July 1942 to July 1945 engineers of this division, under the direction of D. Harrington, Chief, Health and Safety Branch, and J. J. Forbes, Chief, Mineral Production and Security Division, conducted investigations of 1,560 metallic and nonmetallic mines and associated facilities in accordance with the requirements of the Executive order.PURPOSEAn analysis of losses in the production of minerals shows that failure or destruction of equipment either from deliberate or accidental causes produces essentially the same result. Maximum production is insured by the prevention of subversive activities, fires, and industrial accidents."

Project management is not a task to be undertaken lightly. Mining projects generally present even more challenges due to ChinaÆs remoteness and complexity. Having experiences in project management in the West is certainly an asset, but China can present the uninitiated with any number of headaches. To undertake a project there can have many problems that are unique to China. For the last 15 years, China has seen an increasing number of foreign capital investment projects in the mining industry. Practices involved in mining project development have experienced/are experiencing an evolution. Since 1996, Sino Gold Mining Ltd has delivered three mines in China, ie Jianchaling Gold Mine, Jinfeng Gold Mine and White Mountain Gold Mine. Through the work, Sino Gold has established a solid knowledge base and a capable and skilful workforce in effectively undertaking mining projects in China. This paper is concerned with the experiences accumulated so far by Sino Gold in project management in China. An overall review is conducted regarding the reform of the mining project development in China. Opportunities and challenges are highlighted within the political, economic and culture context. Brief summaries of the development of the three gold mines are presented.

An established method exists for the computation of rope lifetimes for shaft hoisting applications in the mining industry. In an earlier study, during the 1990s, an initial comparison of the calculated and actual rope life for various types of hoisting plants showed reasonably good correlation. In the meantime the calculation method has been developed further. The rotation behaviour of the rope during hoisting and the effects of multilayer spooling on drums are now considered in the assessment of expected rope lifetimes. The ability to determine an estimate of rope life in advance is particularly useful for mining companies. Such analysis allows them to predict the effects of rope choice in their particular application and thereby reduce the total cost of rope ownership. Such calculation techniques also allow designers of winding plants to identify aspects of the hoisting configuration that may negatively affect rope life. Often small (low-cost) changes, like increasing the diameter of head sheaves, can result in considerable improvements in rope performance. This paper describes the extended lifetime calculation method and gives further examples of the comparison between actual and calculated rope lives for operational double-drum mine hoists.

"The segregation of magmatic sulphides from mafic and ultramafic silicate magmas, in many circumstances, leaves the magma with a lower-than-normal Ni/MgO ratio, which is characteristic of both lavas erupted from the magma chamber and olivine crystallizing within it. Two end members of the segregation process are discussed; i) batch segregation and ii) fractional segregation.In the former, the critical factor is the magma/sulphide ratio. Computer modelling suggests that where this ratio has been less than 1000, the magma will be recognizable as anomalously low in Ni, due to sulphide segregation, and thus a good target for exploration. In fractional segregation, the critical factors are the proportion of sulphide to silicate being segregated and the degree of fractionation.Samples believed to represent the liquid portion of komatiitic lava f lows from a series of unmineralized sequences in the Abitibi greenstone belt, Canada. Belingwe belt, Zimbabwe, and Barberton Mountainland, South Africa coincide with the sulphide-free fractionation model. They are in marked contrast to samples from the ore-bearing districts of Kambalda and Scotia. Western Australia in which distinct Ni depletion, corresponding to fractionation of olivine plus sulphide in a ratio of between 100 and 200:1 is recognizable. Ni-depleted olivines also mark the sulphide-bearing Dumont intrusion of the Abitibi belt.The Moxie intrusion of northern Maine has distinctly Nidepleted olivines, as does the nearby and petrologically related Katahdin body. In both of these intrusions, the composition of the olivine allows reasonable predictions to be made of the Ni tenors of sulphide showings within them. At Katahdin, the Ni depletion is so widespread that little hope is help out for the presence of economic concentrations of sulphide. At Moxie. the olivine compositions suggest that the best chance of economic sulphides lies in the southern lobe of the intrusion.Ni-depleted olivines also characterize certain rock units within intrusions of the Insizwa complex, Transkei, Southern Africa. Many millions of tonnes of Ni have apparently been removed by sulphides from these rock units, many more than are contained within the single mineralized occurrence so far identified at Waterfall Gorge."

Previous studies of plastic deformation of metals have emphasized the important role of bending and constraints during strain under relatively pure stresses.1"5 Some new phenomena such as early conjugate slip6 and polygonization7 are intimately concerned with the relief of bending stresses, the former by slip and the latter by a process analogous to re-crystallization. However, few analyses of the bending deformation of single crystals were found in the literature, and those8,9 are sufficiently previous to the modern interpretations of slip to invite further investigation in this area. The transverse bending mode of testing, using the two-point loading method, was selected because the center portion of the specimen may be considered as under a theoretically pure bending stress with a uniform bending moment. Considerable attention was given to both the lattice distortion and flow characteristics of the crystals during deformation. Experimental Proeedare A specimen under the action of equal and opposite couples at both ends is said to undergo pure bending. The shear and moment diagrams of a specimen under the two-point loading method of transverse bending are shown in Fig 1. The moment over the middle-third of the span is equal to PL/6, and the vertical shear is zero. Fig 2 (A) illustrates the stress distribution in the elastic range on a plane across the middle of the specimen. It can be seen that the normal stress has a maximum value at the extreme surfaces on the tension and compression sides, and decreases proportionately to zero as it approaches the neutral plane. However, when the plastic range is reached, the stress distribution is no longer a straight line relation, but changes in a manner which can be best illustrated as shown in Fig 2(B). The following calculation and stress analysis are mainly in accordance with the works reported by Timoshenkol0 and Kochendörfer.9 From the simple beam formula, the maximum normal stress will occur at the surface of the specimen. For a round specimen with a radius r and for a rectangular specimen with a height 2h and width 2b, the maximum normal stress, Sp, will be given by the following formulas: For round specimen: 2PL Sp = 3pr3 [1] For rectangular specimen: Sn = 8bh2 [2] Since it is reasonable to consider that slip takes place under the same conditions as in uniaxial loading, the resolved shear stress S?, along the operative slip direction will be as follows: For round specimen: 2PL sin x cos ? Sp = 3pr3 sin x cos ? [3] For rectangular specimen: PL S8 = 8bh2 sin x cos ? [4] where X is the angle between the specimen axis and the slip direction and X, the angle between the specimen axis and the major axis of the glide ellipse. It was also reported by Kochenclorfer9 that the critical bending moment, that is, the bending moment exerted on the specimen to initiate slip, should be higher than the value given by the equations stated above. The increasing need to process lower grade contaminated copper concentrates and simultaneously produce higher purity copper cathodes necessitates a more diligent control in the electrorefining process. Ion exchange processes can be a powerful tool in controlling electrolyte impurities to ensure trouble free operation within the tankhouse and to help maintain cathode purity. In addition, some impurities can be recovered as a value added product. The use of a short bed ion exchange process provides a unique opportunity for impurity management in copper refineries. Several metals are discussed in this paper, including Sb, Bi, As and Ni and their methods of control and recovery within the copper electrolyte circuit. INTRODUCTION To produce a high purity copper product by electro-refining a copper electrolyte, it is important to control the concentration of impurities such as arsenic (As), bismuth (Bi), antimony (Sb), and nickel (Ni). These impurities are introduced into the electrolyte from the copper anode and can affect the copper product and the production operation. The presence of As in the copper product results in a lower electric conductivity and reduced workability of the copper. High levels of Bi in the electrolyte will result in a copper cathode product containing Bi. High Sb concentration will cause undesired floating slimes. A variety of methods have been developed to control the level of these impurities in the copper electrolyte including precipitation, liquid extraction, and ion exchange. These impurities can be recovered and used. This paper discusses novel methods that utilize short bed ion exchange technology to control these impurities. Also, the use of ion exchange to recover acid from the liberator cells bleed for reuse in the tankhouse is reviewed. SHORT BED ION EXCHANGE Short bed ion exchange technology has been employed extensively in the metal finishing industries for over forty years. Unlike conventional ion exchange, short beds are fixed beds without freeboard space. The application of short bed technology results in significant benefits when compared to conventional ion exchange. The resin used in this technology has a significantly smaller diameter than conventional ion exchange resin. As a result of the smaller resin size, exchange kinetics improves dramatically. This facilitates operation at higher flow rates and the use of smaller beds with a small mass transfer zone length. Smaller beds are especially important for applications that use chelating resins due to the high cost of the resin.

Detailed measurements made at a test section adjacent to a deep braced cut and other published data are combined to illustrate the limitations of the common methods of predicting movements associated with excavations in soft to medium clay. While past performance data can be used to estimate expected responses before construction in many cases, actual wall and soil deformations throughout construction can only be estimated using finite element procedures. Success of such analyses depends equally upon considering all aspects of construction that induce strains in adjacent soil, such as wall installation, excavation and bracing sequence, and time, and adequately modeling soil stress-strain behavior. Even when these two criteria are met, soil deformations can not be predicted adequately when strain levels exceed those that produce peak shear stress.

Phase diagrams of the CaO-SiO2-FeOx-MgO, Al2O3 systems are necessary for the analysis of copper smelting reactions and sintering process of iron ore. The effect of MgO and Al2O3 addition on the liquidus of the phase diagram of the CaO-SiO2-FeOx system at low oxygen partial pressure was observed. The liquid phase area changed by the addition of MgO and Al2O3 with a changing oxygen partial pressure from 10-8 to 10-3 atm (10-1 to 102 Pa) at 1573K. The effect of Fe3+/Fe2+ ratio on the melting mechanism is discussed.

Continual occupational exposure to vibrating hand tools can damage the neural, vascular and other soft tissues of the fingers. Rat tail models have been developed to investigate the biological responses of the tissues to vibration.1-2 However, the biodynamic response of the tail relative to that of the human fingers has not been characterized. The objective of this pilot study was to compare the transmissibilities of rat tails measured via a scanning laser vibrometer to those of human fingers gripping a handle. Methods In Part I of this experiment, four male Sprague Dawley rats (6 weeks old) were exposed to discrete 5g-rms sinusoids of 32, 63, 125, 160, 250, and 500 Hz. The rats were restrained in Broome-style restrainers with their tails constrained without compression to an exposure platform via elastic straps as shown in Figure 1. The platform was attached to a vertically vibrating shaker. The vibration was measured for the array of points shown in Figure 1 using a scanning laser vibrometer (Polytec) and the transmissibility calculated for each point on the tail relative to the reference points on the platform. In Part II, three male human subjects were exposed at the frequencies specified in Part I - with the addition of 1000 Hz - at a magnitude at the ANSI <0.5-hr limit up to 63 Hz, after which the acceleration was held constant at 5g-rms. The subjects gripped an instrumented handle at 20 N as shown in Figure 2. The transmissibility was calculated relative to the reference points on the handle. [ ]

In this study, aimed at two kinds of ore (lump ore and iron ore fines) and four types of Australian iron ore resources (haematite iron ore, Mara Mamba iron ore, limonite iron ore, and mixed iron ore, such as Newman, MAC, Yandi and Pilbara iron ore), the physical and chemical properties and high-temperature properties were investigated in detail, to master their behaviour and effects in sintering, blast furnace, and non-blast furnace processes. Then, according to the individual properties of Australian iron ores, Chinese domestic iron ores and Brazilian iron ores, etc, the optimisation of ore-proportioning for sintering, blast furnace, and non-blast furnace processes was studied based on the interaction of the individual iron ores and their complementary properties, and the corresponding tests were carried out. The test work results indicated that this method not only improved the technical and economic indexes of sintering, blast furnace, and non-blast furnace processes, but also increased the addition of Australian iron ore. All of these provide the theoretical basis and technical support for highly effective use of Australian iron ore resources in iron and steel enterprises in China.
