Introduction During the past twenty-five years we have seen considerable exploration for oil on the plains of southern and east-central Alberta. This exploration has to some extent gone on in cycles, with periodic starts, stops, and occasionally some reversals. Each major attempt is usually supplemented by the application of some new method of exploration and, following each period of exploration, drilling tests are made. Whereas oil-bearing horizons are the ultimate objective of these explorations, the preliminary investigation frequently aims at a discovery of structure based on the long accepted belief that accumulations of oil and gas are to a marked degree structurally controlled. At the inception of this general exploration for oil, it was natural that attention should be directed to areas where there was surface evidence of deformation of the underlying strata, but, as the programme progressed, it was found that these surface manifestations of structure were often deceptive when attempts were made to project them to depth, to involve the deeper strata. Drilling of test wells was the only satisfactory method of obtaining exact information.

A case study of longwall mining surface subsidence was performed at a mine in Southwestern Pennsylvania. The mine operated in the Pittsburgh coal seam which averaged 70-72 inches with 6-8 inches draw slate in the longwall location. The average overburden depth ranged from 625 8eet to 660 feet. Three adjacent longwall panels were studied and classified as Panel 1, Panel 2, and Panel 3. The following is information on each and can be seen on the General Mine Map (Fig. 1).

ANNEALING the binary alloy, Mg-0.5 wt pct Zr in a hydrogen atmosphere results in extensive precipitation of zirconium hydride. The morphology of these precipitates has already been investigated.lm3 Squires, Weiner, and phillips4 found, following creep testing of the hydrided alloy at 450" and 500°C, that hydride denuded zones formed along grain boundaries that were aligned approximately normal to the tensile axis. Zone formation was attributed to diffusional creep by magnesium transport down the prevailing stress gradients.4'5 Recently, electron microprobe analysis by Karim, Holt, and Backofen6 showed the zones indeed to be zirconium-free and furthermore it was shown that in compression, zones formed along boundaries approximately parallel to the stress axis. Thus it was confirmed that the zones are formed by diffusional creep. Typical zone-formation is shown in Fig. 1. Karim, Holt, and Backofen also measured the con- tribution to the total strain, from diffusional flow, slip creep, and grain boundary shear: results showed that diffusional strain tends to saturate with increasing imposed strain, while grain boundary shear eventually becomes the dominant deformation mode. It was suggested in explanation that the precipitate-denuded zones are soft and easily sheared, such deformation contributing to the grain boundary shear measurement. A point to be emphasized is that the Mg-0.5 Zr alloy was not superplastic for the index of strain rate sensitivity of flow stress, m = a log log 6 was only 0.25. It was recognized that diffusional creep in a poly crystalline aggregate must be accompanied by boundary shearing.' The suggestion was that the non Newtonian-viscous character of diffusional creep in the Mg-0.5 wt pct Zr alloy is due to resistance to sliding of boundaries lying approximately parallel to the tensile axis.= The work described in the present note should be seen against the above background for it represents initial efforts to observe in a similar way diffusional creep in a superplastic alloy. Previous work with the ternary-alloy Mg-6 Zn-0.5 Zr, pellet extruded, showed it to be superplastic however it does not contain resolvable precipitates to act as internal markers for diffusional creep. Also the fine grain size of the alloy (0.5 p) made conventional metallography rather difficult. Solubility relationships in the Mg-Zn-Zr system are not well known, however making reasonable guesses about the probable phase diagram of the ternary, Mg-Zn-Zr, various heat treatments were attempted to produce hydride precipitation. Tight control of electrode paste additions, hard and soft paste levels, baked zone position and electrode temperatures are integral to superior Söderberg electrode management practices. Paste addition is typically effected through briquettes, cylinders or large blocks. Each electrode paste form has its advantages and disadvantages, but probably a more crucial element from an electrode control perspective is the frequency and amount of electrode paste addition into a Söderberg electrode column. The detrimental effects of excessive soft paste levels leading to Stokes? Law segregation of paste in the electrode column are well documented, while several operators have effectively implemented the use of electrode thermocouples to monitor paste temperatures and automated slipping algorithms to control baking conditions within electrodes. Somewhat less well appreciated are the negative influences of inadequate soft paste levels, especially when coupled with excessive paste cylinder or block additions and resulting high hard paste levels. The alternative of insufficient hard paste levels and associated overheated electrode paste must also be considered, and can contribute to paste segregation directly. This condition also has the potential to generate gas mixtures in the electrode column that are concurrently a potential health hazard, while being prone to spontaneous combustion. Results of industrial trials on electric furnaces using Söderberg electrodes in a variety of applications from ferrochromium, to ferromanganese and even platinum-bearing base metal sulphides smelting are presented to illustrate the influence of paste loading practices on the dynamics of hard and soft paste levels. Possible electrode failure mechanisms attributable to inadequate paste level control will be discussed through some industrial examples. Suitable paste loading practices to mitigate the risks of inappropriate paste levels and associated electrode incidents are presented.

Transient electrical noise events pose serious problems for data acquisition systems used in monitoring acoustic emissions in laboratory and field environments. The U.S. Bureau of Mines has designed and constructed a trigger discriminator circuit for use in ultrasonic acoustic emission studies. Designed for use with signals in the frequency range of 50 to 400 kHz, the instrument examines .incoming signals for frequency content, amplitude, simultaneity, threshold crossings, and number of channels above threshold. If preselected criteria on these properties are met, a plus 5-V pulse is output that may be used to trigger a data acquisition system, allowing rejection of noise events that do not possess useful information. The system was designed for four input channels, but may be expanded to more channels with minimal design changes.

The Wamum and Idzan Creeks Prospect, located 79km W of Lae, Morobe Province, Papua New Guinea (PNG) was discovered by the exploration arm of Conzinc Riotinto of Australia Pty Ltd (CRAE). The detailed surface exploration and 11 vertical holes drilled by CRAE, combined with the recent work by Highlands Gold Limited, indicate the occurrence of porphyry copper-gold mineral- isation and associated alteration. The prospect occurs within andesitic volcanics of the Middle Miocene Langimar Beds. It is bounded by NE trending faults to the NW and SE. The alteration and mineral- isation is hosted in the andesitic tuffs adjacent to high level quartz diorite and hornblende diorite stocks. A NW trend to alteration and mineralisation is obvious in Wamum and Idzan Creeks. The main alteration type is propylitic with minor zones of potassic alteration. A late sericite-quartz-kaolinite-pyrite alteration overprinted the earlier alteration and mineralisation. Copper and gold mineralisation is related to a quartz-carbonate-chalcopyr-ite-pyrite (¦ bornite) vein stockwork and biotite ¦ K-feldspar alteration. The mineralisation system at Wamum and Idzan creeks is low in total sulphides. It is considered as a high- level fracture-controlled system with limited low grade Cu-Au mineralisation.

Manganese ore fines cannot be added to the submerged arc furnace directly as they will prevent even gas flow through the burden. Low gas permeability in the burden will lower the degree of pre-reduction of ore subsequently increase the carbon and energy consumption of the process. In order to utilize manganese ore fines in the furnace, they are typically agglomerated into sinter. In this work, the melting and reduction properties of Gabonese sinter and Gabonese ore have been investigated in pilot scale experiments. Two experiments were conducted, one with 100% sinter as manganese source and one with 50/50 sinter and ore. Lime was used to achieve a charge basicity of 0.72 in both experiments. The composition of slag samples from the excavation of the furnace was established using EPMA(WDS), and the composition of the tapped slag and metal was found using XRF. It was found that while the coke-bed size would determine the tapped slag composition, the melting behavior of the Mn source would determine the mixing with lime.

"Predictive geometallurgical models are being developed for the Productora Cu-Au-Mo deposit based on geochemistry to reflect variability in Cu species based on Cu sequential leach data (ie oxide, transitional-oxide, transitional-sulfide, sulfide and non-recoverable Cu).Productora, located in the coastal range of northern Chile, is a magmatic-hydrothermal tourmaline breccia-hosted, structurally controlled Cu-Au-Mo deposit hosted by a thick sequence of Jurassic rhyodacitic volcanic rocks. North and north-west striking fault sets control the distribution of mineralised breccias. Alteration is widespread, complex and pervasive. Hypogene alteration assemblages range in composition from distal magnetite-amphibole, to sodic-calcic, to sodic, to phyllic, to proximal potassic. Low-temperature advanced argillic assemblages are locally juxtaposed next to proximal high-temperature K-feldspar-tourmaline assemblages. The dominant hypogene Cu phase is chalcopyrite.A simple Cu species classification scheme based on sequential leach data and S per cent was devised to account for non-recoverable Cu (ie non-sulfide Cu), which is insoluble in weak acids. Through machine learning, a proxy for this Cu species classification scheme was developed based on: depth, Ca per cent, Cu per cent, Fe per cent, K per cent, Mn ppm, S per cent and Ln(Cu/S) plus logged regolith class, thus allowing classification to be extended to areas of the deposit where no sequential leach data are available. The modelled data has been used to generate deposit-wide 3D models for Cu species classification.The validity of the proxy Cu species classification model is being tested against the results of flotation analysis. The Imperial Smelting Process for the simultaneous production of zinc and lead is probably regarded by the ecologist as a necessary evil with the benefits of its products marginally outweighing the adverse effects of its operation. The purpose of the paper is to examine the environmental impact of the process and to provide information which will demonstrate that the process has considerable indirect environmental benefits and that success is being achieved in reducing direct pollution of the environment by the process. About 12 per cent of the world's zinc and seven per cent of its lead is produced by the process. This proportion will increase with the construction of a new smelter in China. After a brief description of the process the paper considers one of its principal advantages, its ability to treat bulk concentrates. The production of these at the mine can have a number of environmental benefits. Less comminution may be required to separate the metals from the gangue than is needed to separate them from each other; recoveries can be improved in flotation resulting in cleaner tailings dams, less power demand and reduced consumption of potentially hazardous reagents. Simplification of mining and above ground ore handling may also give significant benefits . The process is a considerable consumer of secondary materials such as galvanisers' ashes, copper smelter dusts and materials containing zinc and lead derived from steel plant dusts. The majority of these materials are fed to the blast furnace after hot briquetting. The consumption of secondary materials is a considerable environmental benefit since otherwise they would require to be dumped in secure land-fill sites. The operation of the process itself continues to be subjected to increasingly stringent environmental standards of which examples are provided. Details are provided of lead emissions at Avonmouth showing considerable success in reducing these while increasing production. The slag from the process continues to find many useful applications.

Adicionalmente, cuenta con una planta de flotación para el tratamiento de mineral con una capacidad de 30 TM/día. La concentración de estructuras mineralizadas (vetas) está distribuida en tres áreas que se han denominado zonas Eleine, Tembladera y Santa Cruz. La mena de sulfuros tiene una recuperación alta en la planta de flotación (90.79% en plata) puesto que los sulfuros (tetraedrita y galenas argentíferas) no contienen minerales de manganeso."

In the past most of the research in pelletizing has as its aim the production of a physically strong pellet. Now that this problem is solved, more attention is being paid to uniformity in grade and chemical composition. Consideration has been given in recent years to a study of additives which will make pellets partially or fully fluxed. Blast furnace tests show fluxed pellets to have advantages over both fluxed sinter and acid pellets. Lower slag volumes are used more frequently in the blast furnace and the uniformity of the charge, both physically and chemically, is becoming increasingly important. A considerable improvement can be secured by having all of the flux uniformly distributed through the pellets in a calcined state. A fluxed pellet, therefore, should be a superior product. The use of an ore burden that contains an appropriate quantity of fluxing materials is not new to the blast furnace industry. For years the Minette ores of France and Germany, the Clinton ores of the Birmingham, Ala., areas, as well as others, which are low in iron but contain calcium carbonate in sufficient quantities to give them self-fluxing properties, have proven economical. The adaption of the sintering process to the preparation of ore burdens provided a means for artifically associating the fluxstone with the iron ore prior to charging to the blast furnace. In 1944 Torpl discussed the effects of using lime in sinter made in Sweden on the sinter's metallurgical performance in a blast furnace. Hessle2 reported in 1945 on the advantages of using lime in sinter to increase the sintering plants' capacity and reduce fuel requirements. Robinson3 discussed the use of lime in Swedish sintering practice at the 1950 Blast Furnace, Coke Oven, and Raw Materials meeting. One of the suggested advantages was the combining of lime with silica to prevent the formation of a fayalite slag, which is difficult to reduce in the blast furnace. Nilson4 at the same meeting commented briefly on experimental work that had just started in the U. S. on the use of lime in sinter. The literature tends to indicate that most of this early work was directed towards improvement in sinter physical quality, and the fact that the feed to the blast furnace was partially fluxed was incidental. It was not long, however, before blast furnace advantages were being claimed. The matter was forcibly called to the attention of North American operators by reports of remarkable production records established by the Russians using fluxed sinter. The leading step was taken on this continent by the Steel Company of Canada in 1957; McMahon5 reported on the marked improvement in performance of an 18-ft blast furnace using fluxed sinter at its Hamilton works. Other North American operators quickly followed theStelco lead.

Edie Creek is located in the Morobe Goldfield about 17km by road from Wau in the Morobe Province of Papua New Guinea (PNG). Four distinct periods of mining development have occurred since discovery of rich alluvials in 1926. During the two years following discovery, individual expat-riate miners with gangs of native labourers mining rich alluvial gravels dominated the field. After the discov-ery of hardrock mineralisation in 1927, companies accumulated leases and devel-oped extensive underground mines and mechanical processing plants at Day Dawn Mine and Edie Creek/Karuka Mine between 1929 and 1942. After the Second World War, the underground operations were not re-opened, and mining activ-ities mostly concentrated on working alluvial and eluvial deposits. From 1962 onwards, Papua New Guinean miners became increasing producers as company activities declined. In 1990, Edie Creek Mining Company Pty Limited, a joint venture company involving Wau landowner groups commenced operations on New Guinea Goldfield's leases. It currently mines by open pit methods, rich quartz stringers and is invest-igating the open pitting of the Edie Creek/Karuka underground workings.This paper describes the mining and processing techniques employed during the various phases of develop-ment at Edie Creek in the past 70 years. The problems and hardships of operating on a new and remote goldfield are outlined.Abstract

Increasing the upper particle size limit of flotation would allow operators to increase mill throughput, save operating costs, simplify flow sheets, and increase rate of return. However, coarse particle flotation is difficult for various reasons, of which bubble-particle detachment has been identified as the major limiting factor. In the present work, the process of bubble-particle detachment has been studied by directly measuring the forces required to detach air bubbles from hydrophobic solids. The measurements were conducted using a hanging balance apparatus. The measured forces were converted to detachment energies that can be compared with the work of adhesion, which in turn is a function of hydrophobicity, surface tension and contact area. The results were converted to detachment energies using the Young-Laplace equation for capillarity. In the present work, the solid surfaces were hydrophobised by coating them with octadecyltrichlorosilane and cetyltrimethylammonium bromide. The results show that bubble-particle detachment occurs in two steps. In the first step, air bubbles are deformed, while the three-phase contact (TPC) line is pinned, until contact angle reaches advancing angle. In the second step, the TPC line moves along the surface until solid/air interface is replaced by solid-liquid interface. In general, the energies of detachment measured in the second step are in good agreement with calculated work of adhesion. Thus, the energy required during the first step effectively represents an energy barrier for bubble-particle detachment. It has been found that the energy barrier varies with surface roughness and surface tension. The results of the present investigation suggest, therefore, that coarse particle flotation can be improved by control of particle hydrophobicity, surface roughness, and surface tension.

An alumina-silica coating was deposited on a nickel substrate by sol-gel process, and the structures and composition were evaluated, The sols were made from aluminium and silicon alkoxide, and an acid catalyst including HCl, To produce adherent silica coatings on nickel, various additives such as surfactant, viscose additive and drying control chemical additives were introduced to the system, and appropriate drying and firing cycles were applied after dipping in solution. The hot corrosion and oxidation resistance of the coating at different temperatures were investigated, The structure and uniformity of the coatings were examined by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), The results indicate that a uniform coating of alumina silica can be produced on a nickel substrate by optimizing the composition and process variables of the sol. Coatings can protect substrates from oxidation and hot corrosion at different temperature up to 1000°C, but is not very effective for hot-corrosion resistance at 1000°C.

THERE are two general approaches to the problem of increasing profits from an operation. One is to lower expense; the other is to raise income. Mechanical preparation of coal may be used for either purpose but a prudent consideration of many details must precede any decision lest the results be negative instead of positive. It is quite possible that any net gain will result from a combination of the two. Since mechanically prepared coal invariably is a better product qualitatively than a hand-picked coal from the same mine, it is a reasonable expectation that the customer will be willing to increase the producer's income by paying a higher price. Or there may be the possibility that a combination of mechanical mining plus mechanical cleaning will give a lower over-all production cost for the coal in the railroad car. More likely, there will be found a combination of these two factors. From the customer's point of view, the competitive delivered cost per B.t.u. considered in relation to such incidental factors as dust nuisance, handling properties, ash disposal, and ash fusibility determines what he will pay. In-a bulk tonnage such as coal, freight is a very considerable part of the delivered fuel cost, and obviously freight paid on incombustible ash has no economic attractions. INCENTIVE FOR CLEANING Coal is prepared in four major ways: l (1) by screening or sizing, (2) by mixing or blending, (3) by cleaning, including hand picking and mechanical cleaning, (4) by dustless treatment. By a combination of any or all of these methods, coal can be prepared to standard specifications. It is easily possible to have good cleaning and still get a poor final product because of faulty screening or mixing, while it is possible to produce a very acceptable product from mediocre cleaning if the coal is well screened and mixed.

The Star mine, near Neihart, Cascade County, Mont., has been in continuous operation since the construction of a 50-ton bulk flotation mill in 1939. The mine was examined by G. N. Bennett, an engineer of the Bureau of Mines, in November 1942. At that time the life of the operation appeared to be limited and a program of crosscutting and core drilling were recommended. The program had as its objective the investigation of a promising undeveloped area lying west of the Star vein and, if possible, the development of enough reserves in this area to insure continuous operation during the war emergency. Development of additional reserves would then justify necessary changes in the mill in order to eliminate the heavy penalties imposed for excess zinc in the bulk concentrates. The Bureau of Mines work began in February 1944 and was completed in September 1944. The project was started by Wilder R. Brinton and continued by Thomas W. Oster, mining engineers in the Bureau's Montana district office. Beneficiation tests on are and concentrates were made after completion of the underground work. This report presents the factual data obtained during all phases of the Bureau's investigation.

The Bureau of Mines has developed several techniques for draining methane from coalbeds in advance of mining. Drilling long horizontal holes from an underground location is one such technique, which was successfully demonstrated in the Pittsburgh and Sunnyside Coalbeds. The same technique has now been applied in the Mary Lee Coal bed at Jim Walter Resources, Inc.'s No. 4 Mine, Brookwood, Ala., where two holes were drilled horizontally--one to a depth of 1,010 feet (308 m) and the other to 540 feet (165 m). The 1,010-foot (308-m) hole proved successful in degasifying a portion of the Mary Lee Coalbed. The hole drained methane for 1 year, during which time the initial gas flow of 200,000 ft3/d (5,663 m3/d) declined to 65,000 ft3/d (1,840 m3/d). Total gas production was 40 x 106 ft3 (1.1 x 106 m3). The gas was of commercial quality, with 98 pct methane and a heat rating of 990 Btu/ft3 (36.89 Mj/m3). The methane emissions from the faces of the mine section advancing into the degasified zone were reduced by 60 pet. The 540-foot (165-m) hole was terminated prematurely when it became impossible to maintain an open hole. Because of caving, very little gas was drained through this hole.

"Coal seams in Tashan Mine of Datong Coal Group in China average 49.2 ft (15m) thick and have been mined by the top coal caving longwall mining method of large mining height. Mining height was 12.5 ft (3.8m) and the top coal caving height was 36.7 ft (11.2m). The gateroad pillar between panels was 124.6 ft (38m). During retreat mining, serious bumps occurred in the gateroads on both sides of the pillar affecting safety production. Therefore, pillarless mining was experimented.Using numerical modeling and comparative study of cases of similar mining condition, it was decided to employ a 19.7 ft (6m) wide pillar, rather than the previous 124.6 ft (38m) wide pillar. Support system for the gateroads was designed and implemented. During gateroad development, pillar failure conditions and entry deformation were monitored. Hydraulic fracturing method was employed to cut off the K3 sandstone along the entry rib so as to reduce the abutment pressure induced during retreat mining. Support reinforcement method combining grouting and advanced reinforcement methods was proposed to insure stable gateroad ahead of mining. Methane drainage and nitrogen injection were implemented to eliminate hazards associated with mine fire and spontaneous combustion.Since the development of gateroad has just completed, and retreat mining has not begun, the effectiveness of the proposed methods is unknown at this point. However, monitoring will continue until after mining. Aluminum single crystals, alloyed with 0.042 atomic pet Cu and 0.11 and 1.1 atomic pct Mg, were subjected to constant stress creep tests, tensile tests, and hot hardness measurements within a temperature range of 300° to 866OK. Calculations based on Dorn's temperature-compensated time parameter, 6, gave a value of DH, = 27,000 cal per mol for the activation energy of early creep in aluminum single crystals. Correlations have been obtained for aluminum alloy single crystals with the parameter E for solid solution strengthening, as well as with the parameter F for solid solution hardening, by using a valence of three for aluminum. Limited measurements on tensile specimens show that the slip band density tends to decrease with increasing temperature and with decreasing solute concentration. INCREASING interest is being shown in the mechanisms of plastic deformation in single crystals during tensile and creep testing. The complexity of deformational processes in polycrystalline materials has led to a search for simpler experimental conditions. Numerous creep and tensile investigations have been conducted with pure, metallic single crystals. To a lesser degree, the effects of alloying elements on the tensile properties of single crystals have been determined. However: the literature dealing with the effects of alloying additions in single crystals under creep conditions is vanishingly small. This paper represents an attempt to narrow this gap in the knowledge of the subject. Previous investigations of creep behavior at the Battelle Memorial Institute1-1 have been of great value in the analysis of the present single crystal data. It is equally desirable, however, to ascertain the extent of correspondence between the behavior of single crystal and polycrystalline materials. For this purpose, correlations, similar to those developed for polycrystalline aluminum alloys by Dorn and co-workers, have been made with the single crystal data. The results from this study have tended to confirm and extend those correlations to the case of alloyed single crystals. Materials and Procedures Three dilute binary aluminum alloys were prepared for this investigation from 99.99 + wt pct Al, 99.8 wt pct Mg, and 99.92 wt pct (electrolytic) Cu. The nominal compositions of the alloys were 0.042 atomic pct Cu, and 0.11 and 1.1 atomic pet Mg. Precautions were taken to avoid contamination of the stock during melting and casting of the alloys. After a heat treatment of 8 hr at 925°F the alloys were extruded, then machined into) threaded tensile specimens with a 3 in. reduced section and a 0.505 in. diam. Spectrographic examination showed less than 47 ppm metallic impurities in each alloy. The single crystals were grown by the strain-anneal method, with a critical strain of about 11/4 pet giving the optimum results. In general, 3 in. crystals were obtained with the Al-Cu alloy, but smaller crystals in the magnesium alloys necessitated the use of 2 in. and 1 in. gage lengths with the low and high magnesium alloy specimens, respectively. After an electrolytic polish, the orientation of that portion of the specimen containing the largest single crystal was determined from Laue back-reflection photographs. Tensile tests were conducted at a constant load rate of about 2 lb per min. Creep runs were made in a constant temperature room, under constant stress at the higher creep temperatures, and constant load at the lower temperatures. The eloneation was measured to within ±5 microin. by a specially designed capacitance extensometer. The ex-tensometer arms were attached to the 3 in. specimens at the shoulders of the test piece or, where the crystals were smaller than 3 in., by knife-edge grips.
