Studies of the transformation of aus-tenite at constant subcritical temperatures have been numerous since the work of Davenport and Rain.' Considerable information has been obtained on low-alloy steels and on high-carbon alloys containing undissolved carbide or graphite at the austenitizing temperature. Little is known of the isothermal transformation of aus-tenite containing in solution large amounts of both carbon and a single alloying element. In this investigation four steels containing one per cent carbon and with chromium in the range 3 to 9 per cent have been examined with the view to establishing the fundamental character of the isothermal reactions when all carbon and chromium are initially in solution in austenite. Experimental Procedure Alloys The chemical compositions of the steels investigated are given in Table I. The 4 per cent Cr alloy is a commercial steel. The other steels were made by the Carpenter Steel Co. as 50-lb., induction-furnace heats and rolled to 5/8 -in. round bars. Bars were softened at 650' to 700°C. before the specimens were cut. Most of the lines on the transformation diagrams presented here have been placed on the basis of the microscopic examinatioll of partially reacted specimens, Thees specimens were approximately 1/2 by 1/4 by 1/8 in. ill size, specimens of the 9 per cent cr steel were held 10 to 12 hr, at 1200°to 1225°C. before quenching to the various subcritical temperatures. The other steels were held for 2 to 2 1/2 hr. at 12ooOC. before quenching. These treatments, carried out in an atmosphere of purified nitrogen, produced an austenite grain size larger than A.S.T.M. So. I, some grains being 1 to 2 mm. in diameter. There were a few undissolved carbide particles in some specimens of the 9 per cent Cr steel. It is believed, however, that any errors in the results due to incomplete solution of carbon and chromium in austenite are negligible; that is, austenite compositions may be considered as being those listed ill Table I. PREVIOUS work' on a four-component system (Cu-Mn-Ni-Fe) resulted in the development of consistent relationships between the chemical composition and the electrical properties of these manganin-type alloys. The present study was undertaken to develop alloys with temperature coefficients of resistivity and thermoelectric properties more desirable than those of the manganin type, and to determine whether the relationships which had been found for the Cu-Mn-Ni-Fe alloys could be extended to five-and six-component alloy systems. PREPARATION OF ALLOYS The five- and six-component alloys were made from OFHC copper rod, ARMCO iron, electrolytic nickel, manganese cathode chip, and special high-purity aluminum and indium. A Cu-Mg master was used for deoxidation. The compositions of these materials are given in Table I. The alloys were melted and cast as indicated previously,' except that no cover was used and the melts were teemed. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The finished wire size of 0.0808 in. diam was again selected for the reason that the test specimens would be self-supporting, thus eliminating any extraneous effects which might have been introduced by winding smaller diameter wire on spools or forms. The following tests were performed on the finished wires: A) Chemical Analyses—All of the components of these alloys were determined by premium gravimetric methods. The principle residual impurity contained in these alloys is 0.008 pct Mg (by weight), maximum. Tables II and 111 present the mean analyses computed from at least four determinations of each constituent. B) Electrical Characteristics—The test procedures forthe determination of the thermal emf vs copper, resistivity, and the resistance-temperature relationship are given in detail in Ref. 1. It was also shown that the resistance-temperature relationship is of the form Pt = P,n + At -B/2, [1] where P, is the resistance at t C expressed in percent of a given standard resistance, P, is this per- 0 centage at 0°C, and A and B are constants for a given, properly treated, composition. The results of the electrical tests are also given in Tables II and 111. INTERPRETATION OF DATA The modified Linde2 formula, known to be valid for dilute binary solid solutions, was applied to the complex Cu-Mn-Ni-Fe type alloys. This relationship is of the form where Ap is the increase in resistivity. Zb the valence of the solute, Zn the valence of the solvent, and K and K are designations assigned by Robinson and Dorn3 to the constants for the periodic group to which solute element belongs. The units of K, are -cm per valence difference squared per at. pct; those of K2 are pa-cm per at. pct. For the sake of brevity, these units are not repeated in the following discussion. Calculations were made to determine if this formula was accurate for five-component systems. No experimental studies were made of the Cu-In and Cu-A1 binary systems. The effects of indium additions upon the resistivity of copper are given by Linde. These data, along with those of the effects of Mn and Fe, permitted the calculation of the effects of Al.

"Abstract With the development in the construction of heavily loaded structures, the necessity of pile foundations has increased. For the transfer of heavy loads, it is mandatory that the piles need to be socketed in the underlying rock strata. The load transfer in bored rock socketed piles is by end resistance or the combination of shaft and end resistance which in turn depends on the length of the rock socket. The determination of socketing length of the pile at present is mostly based on a few factors which affect the pile load transfer mechanism. The effect of all the possible factors involved, need to be studied in proposing guidelines for the design of rock socketing length of the pile. Analyses are carried out using finite element analysis software (PLAXIS 3D Foundation) to understand the influence of the thickness of overlying strata for different socket lengths of piles in weak rock. From the load settlement curves, the influence of the overlying soil on the rock socket length isobserved and an effective rock socket length is proposed.IntroductionThe determination of socketing length of the pile at present is mostly based on a few factors affecting the pile load transfer mechanism, which sometimes give a better design and sometimes an uneconomical design. Too much socketing length results in more construction time and higher costs. Therefore, the effect of all possible factors involved need to be studied in proposing guidelinesfor the design of t h e r o c k socket length of the pile.The factors that affect the termination criteria of the rock socketed pile are the capacity requirement, thickness and properties of the overlying soil, characteristics of the founding strata, drilling tools used, roughness of the rock socket and nature of loading.A comprehensive study was performed to understand all the above mentioned factors in different types of rocks. In this paper discussion is made on the settlement results, specifically the influence of overlying sand of different densities above a weak rock. The influence of stress developed is not discussed, keeping in mind the size of the paper under study."

The application of square shaft helical piers in expansive soils is a standard of practice in many areas of the United States. Over 20 years of performance monitoring show exceptional performance and economy will result if proper design procedures, specification requirements and installation procedures are followed. This is true for new foundations and the repair of existing foundations, including lightly loaded wood-frame structures on expansive soils. Proper design includes: 1) site geotechnical characterization, 2) pier layout such that each pier is loaded to its maximum design capacity, 3) maximize spans between piers, 4) minimize the number of piers, 5) isolate the structure from the expansive soil with an appropriate void zone below all grade beams, slabs or other components that would otherwise be in soil contact and 6) utilize only single helix piers. Proper specification employs a performance specification that specifies: 1) the design load on each pier with a suitable safety factor, 2) the minimum installation torque, typically 4,000 ft-lbs (5.4 kN-m), or refusal, 3) a minimum pier shaft steel Fy = 70 to 90 ksi (483 to 621 Mpa) and pier helix steel Fy = 80 ksi (552 Mpa), 4) 1.5 to 1.75 inch (38.1 to 44.5 mm) square shafts, 5) smooth shaft surface, 6) the ICC Evaluation Report (ER) number of the manufacturer and 7) the manufacturer ISO 9001 certification for material quality control. Proper installation requires: 1) equipment with sufficient axial compression force (crowd) on the pier shaft so the helix engages the soil and advances to the specified minimum installation torque or refusal, 2) additional specialized techniques for expansive soils and 3) qualified specialty helical pier installation contractors experienced in expansive soils who submit and utilize pier configurations, techniques and equipment that will most effectively and economically meet the specified performance.

Gold and platinum group metals (PGM) do not dissolve in sulfate electrolyte from anode during electro-refining of primary copper. The PGM form solid ‘slimes’ which accumulates at bottom of the electrolytic cell. Typically, 8 to 10 ppm silver is present in copper cathodes, which is equivalent to almost 2% of silver loss during electro-refining. The silver can be cemented with cathode copper as soon as it is dissolved into the electrolyte from anode or during entrapment of slime particles in cathode. Over a period of time, the concentrates grade has deteriorated and change in type & amount of impurities in concentrate has resulted in higher silver loss during refining process. Therefore, an in-depth investigation was carried out in both fire- and electro-refining processes to understand the root causes of higher silver loss in copper cathodes. The detailed characterization and the plant data analysis were carried out. The results of study revealed that higher silver loss in 3rd crop cathodes as compared to 1st and 2nd crop cathodes from same anode. In anode silver was present in two forms, dissolved in copper (solid solution) and in slime phases such as Cu2-xAgxSeTe. SEM-EDX study of anode cross section confirmed higher silver and oxygen content in central region (core) of anode as compared that in both air and mold sides. This is due to non-uniform cooling of anode which was confirmed by the solidification modeling. Higher concentration of oxygen & silver at core of anode rised Ag+ concentration in electrolyte and slime particles during 3rd crop. The results of study were used to optimize the anode cooling process and also electrolyte chemistry to reduce the silver loss. The details of study carried out are discussed in this paper using the results of modeling, characterization and experimental studies. INTRODUCTION In the electrolytic refining of copper, fire refined copper anodes are used as raw material. Anodes contains copper of the range 99.5 to 99.6%, rest being the impurities. Hence, the purpose of the refining is (1) to remove the impurities so that final cathode conforms to the LME specifications and also (2) to recover the precious metal from the anode copper. When anode is dissolved, most of the impurities reports to the anode slime settled at the bottom of the cell, and rest dissolves in the electrolyte. Dissolved impurities remains in electrolyte and are removed during electrolyte recycling. However, sometime dissolved impurities and slime particles get entrapped in cathode due to disturbances in operational conditions. Metals dissolving in the electrolyte are the elements such as Ni, Co, Fe, Zn. The electrode potential of As, Sb and Bi being close to that of copper, these elements partly dissolve in the electrolyte. Noble metals like Ag, Au, Pt and Pd are generally insoluble and are thus expected to report to the anode slime. A small amount of the sliver content from the anode is dissolved in the electrolyte. Because the dissolved silver electroplates on the cathode at a smaller applied potential than copper, the cathode typically contains up to 8 ppm of silver. This is referred to as ‘silver loss’ in cathode (Cooper, 1987). Fortunately, silver is a rather benign impurity in copper due to its electrical conductivity being higher than copper. However, higher silver loss in cathode is loss of revenue for Copper smelter due to significant difference in their LME price.

A field emission scanning electron microscope equipped with EBSD has been employed to evaluate the role of 0.013 wt% Nb on the evolution of the microstructure and texture of a novel thermomechanically processed low-alloy, medium-carbon steel. Specimens were subjected to hot-rolling with a total reduction of 80%, four passes in the recrystallization regime and four passes below the non-recrystallization temperature. Immediately after rolling, the strips were quenched to 420 °C and subsequently cooled slowly in a furnace to simulate strip coiling with transformation of austenite to bainite. The results showed that Nb microalloying results in a finer microstructure with a sharper texture when compared to an identical steel but without Nb. In addition, analysis of the retained austenite texture indicated that the main bcc texture components are the product transformed brass and copper components in the parent austenite.

RITER, Salt Lake City, Utah.-We have every reason to believe that oil flotation Will soon come into general use as a final guard against slimes losses in concentrating mills, not only in the case of zinc ores, but also in the case of other semi-precious ores. It also promises much as a primary process for the concentration of minerals that are not adapted to gravity methods. Moreover, modifications of the process involving selective or preferential flotation are gradually becoming understood, and will make it possible to eliminate pyrite and other minerals occurring as undesirable impurities in zinc concentrates. And what perhaps is of equal importance, further modifications promise an effective method of separating zinc blende from ores that are chiefly valuable for copper, lead, anti precious metals, thereby making an asset out of zinc which has heretofore been a liability. The tendency of certain pulverized minerals to float on water, especially after having been in contact with grease, has been known to mill-men for a long time, and was formerly something to be deplored and to be striven against. All at once, this tendency has become a saving grace; and now, like tardy converts to a new faith, we are zealous advocates of something we once despised. I was once employed at a mine in the Tintic mining district of Utah¬the old Eureka Hill property-where ores that were too low in value to Warrant being sent to copper or lead smelters were treated in a combination mill. The ores contained gold, silver, lead, copper, zinc, manganese, arsenic, etc., in varying quantities and in varying mineral forms, mingled in a quartz and calcite gangue. The material was stamped fine and then concentrated on Frue vanners so as to make a smelting concentrate, after which the tailings were thickened and treated in amalgamating pans for the recovery of non-concentratable precious metals. In the amalgamating pans, under the influence of heat and agitation, a dark greasy froth or scum sometimes formed on the surface of the ore mixture. This froth or scum was composed mainly of mineral sulphides, and its occurrence might have meant only casual losses in the previous concentration, except that the phenomenon was accompanied by faulty amalgamation of the precious metals and by excessive losses in the mill tailings. Grease and oil, present by accident, were the cause of the trouble.

INTRODUCTION MINERAL deposits of Salmo map-area (Figure 1) have aroused the interest of prospectors for more than a half-century. Properties within the map-area have produced lead, zinc, silver, tungsten, and gold. Sheep Creek mining camp ranks fifth in the Province in the total production of gold, but during recent years interest has been concentrated upon base metals, and meticulous prospecting and exploration have resulted in the discovery of many large zinc-lead orebodies. PREVIOUS WORK Geological investigations of the region were begun long ago, and it is interesting to trace the development of ideas with our increasing knowledge of the geology of this complex area. The first geological examination of the rocks of Salmo map-area was made in 1859-60 by H. Bauerman (1), who was employed as geologist accompanying the first international Boundary Survey. Bauerman examined the rocks exposed along Pend d'Oreille river and published a section indicating that the sedimentary rocks are probably of Palaeozoic age, and are intruded by granite of unknown age. McConnell and Brock(2), in 1894 - 1900, carried out the reconnaissance mapping of the West Kootenay Sheet, on which they outlined the Mesozoic rocks of the Rossland Beaver Mountain volcanic groups that they believed rested unconformably upon the sedimentary rocks to the southeast, which they regarded as of Palaeozoic age.

Ground behaviour in the vicinity of a roadway has been investigated using a physical model and in situ tests during a roof fall. It was discovered that behaviour of the ground is governed by irreversible displacements of adjacent rock clusters. The cluster is a short-living sector of a rock mass that moves as a solid body. For the lack of degree of freedom, the rock mass must be divided into clusters that are forced to move one after another in space and in time. These clusters permanently rearrange and reform during irreversible (inelastic) ground deformation. The crowded clusters have to yield to each other and alter their velocity and direction of movement to accommodate their motion into the excavation. Such behaviour involves uneven and irregular vertical deflection and the movement of adjacent rock blocks in the roof, sides and floor of an opening. Such movement destroys the symmetry of horizontal displacements with respect to the centre line of the opening. A set of indicators that a roof fall is imminent has been identified. Horizontal displacements and dilation must be controlled in order to maintain the stability of an underground opening. Such a state retains the self-supporting effect of the roof and contributes to rock bolts bearing capacity.

THE measurements on the formation of multi-layered scales on pure iron1 and the metal -lographic examination of the produced layer of FeO, Fe,O,, and Fe2O3 shown in micrographs2 throw much interesting light on this apparently well-known subject. Professor Paidassi announced2 that in a few months7 time further results are going to be published with regard to the growth of Fe2O3 and Fe2O3 layers on an Armco iron as a function of temperature. Because of the very thin layers of Fe2O3 which are shown by Paidassi (Fig. 10 of ref. 2) when samples were scaled in air at 700°C for 4 hr and because this is not in agreement with the present author's previous observations, the following experiment was recently carried out. Polished cylindrical samples 13/64 in. in diam and 1/4 in. long from electrolytic iron used for spectro-graphic work (Hilger, H.S. Iron rods, F.693) and an Armco iron sample 1/4 in. in diam of the same length were suspended in a muffle furnace on Nichrome wire and annealed in air for 4 hr at 700°C 5OC. Because of the known easy peeling off of the Fe2O3 layer which is mainly in the form of powder (purple red dust on the surface) the samples were protected against any draft and shock. "Placer gold mineralizations have been observed in the north-eastern parts of Greece. Some of them have been at first evaluated to be of special interest so, exploration campaigns have been designed and carried out. Among the other exploration techniques applied on the sites of interest, drilling was the one to give the detailed information and data for the evaluation of the deposits. Having collected the data from trenching and two consecutive drilling campaigns, they were processed geostatistically to estimate the ore reserves and therefore the economic interest of the deposits. The latter was done by using exploitability indices, which would give a rough idea whether the deposits were economically feasible. A small number of such deposits have been spotted in the area and have been explored and evaluated as above. The present paper deals with the most important of them, giving all the process followed and the results derived from the exploration carried out."

The concept of local equilibrium is examined and, in particular, the applicability of the concept to two-phase binary diffusion couples is discussed. It is concluded that, if binary solid solutions are treated thermodynamically as ternary solutions, vacancies being the third component, then recent experimental observations of nonequilibrium interface compositions (i.e., compositions different from the phase diagram values) are consistent with a state of complete dynamic equilibrium at the interface. CLASSICAL approaches to diffusion and to other irreversible processes often utilize a postulate of "local equilibrium". That is, one assumes even in the presence of gradients, fluxes, and time changes of properties, a) that the Second Law can be formulated locally, and b) that thermodynamic equations of state among intensive properties are identical with those for equilibrium phases. A direct consequence of this assumption, for example, is that one would calculate the total entropy of a nonequilibrium phase simply by integrating the entropy density (eu per unit volume) over the volume of the phase, assuming that entropy density is the same function of energy and particle density as for equilibrium phases. In the study of diffusion and of diffusion-controlled phase transformations, metallurgists take this concept of local equilibrium for granted and utilize it automatically. In fact, experimental evidence of all kinds is overwhelming that "local equilibrium" is a valid limiting law, approached more and more closely as gradients and rates of change approach zero. On the other hand, we have neither experimental nor statistical thermodynamic proof that this principle of "local equilibrium" should remain rigorously valid at high gradients and for rapid processes. Theoretically, in fact, one would expect deviations because interactions between adjacent volume increments of material affect the evaluation of entropy. Also one observes experimentally structural and small energetic differences between equilibrium and nonequilibrium phases. The purpose of this paper is to present a thermodynamic framework for the study and correlation of deviations from strict local equilibrium in isothermal diffusion and related processes. This procedure, in effect, preserves the principle of local equilibrium by thermodynamically assigning the deviations from static equilibrium properties to a defect component. Although this theory is entirely phenomenological, the possibility does exist of correlating the theory with experimental observations of defects under favorable circumstances. The most immediate application appears to be to the equilibria at the interfaces in two-phase binary diffusion couples. A recent pertinent work by Eifert et al.1 has shown that the concentrations of aluminum in the a(fcc) and B(bcc) phases at the 0-8 interface in Cu:Cu-12.5 wt pct A1 diffusion couples are greater than those given by the phase diagram. It is postulated by these authors that the supersaturation of the o phase at the interface provides the driving force for the a-to-B lattice transformation; the excess free energy of the a phase, ?Gaxs, arising from the greater-than-equilibrium aluminum concentration is about 3 cal per g-atom. On the basis of the schematic free energy-composition diagram shown in Fig. 1, Eifert et al. concluded that the thermodynamic situation at the interface is one of the partial equilibrium; that is, = for the more mobile aluminum whereas will be reexamined in the latter part of this paper. THERMODYNAMIC PROPERTIES OF DEFECTS A rigorous analysis of the thermodynamics of defects requires an added degree of freedom in the Phase Rule sense, because the standard formulations of solution thermodynamics (partial molal properties of components, free energy minimization, equality of chemical potentials, and so forth) involve the implicit

The Olympic Dam deposit in South Australia contains 2% copper and 0.06% uranium, which are present as bomite, chalcocite, chalcopyrite, uraninite, coffinite and brannerite. The copper is principally recovered using flotation. The flotation tailings, which contain the bulk of the uranium, and typically 0.3% copper, are leached using sulfuric acid and an oxidant at atmospheric pressure. This paper describes the results from a detailed investigation of the leaching behaviour of this ore. The influence of acid strength, Fe3+ concentration, redox potential and temperature on the dissolution of uranium and copper minerals was studied. Experimental data were obtained from extensive batch leach tests. Mineralogical studies, including SEM analysis of individual mineral grains, were also carried out. The maximum extraction of uranium determined experimentally was in good agreement with that predicted from SEM determination of the proportion of refractory brannerite in the ore. The leaching rate of copper was found to be independent of acidity over the range 20 g L-' to pH 2.0, but was strongly dependent on temperature and Fe3+ concentration. Uranium extraction showed a weak de endence on acidity, Arrhenius temperature dependence and a complex co-dependence on F>+ concentration and redox potential. A kinetic model has been developed, which predicts copper and uranium dissolution. This model will be incorporated into a more comprehensive model that can be used to predict leach performance and reagent consumption for specific ore samples.

THE Sunrise iron mine of The Colorado Fuel and Iron Corporation is in Platte County, Wyoming, about 110 miles north of Cheyenne. It is served by the company-owned Colorado and Wyoming Railway, which connects with the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy and the Colorado and Southern railways at Guernsey, Wyoming, a distance of 6 miles from the mine. The original Sunrise claims were staked mainly by United States Army officers and soldiers stationed at old Fort Laramie, because of small showings of copper in the Carboniferous limestones that form a horizontal capping overlying the Huronian iron ore. A small copper smelter was operated for about three years at Fairbanks, now an abandoned town on the North Platte River. As many of the copper shafts and test pits near the present Sunrise mine were deepened, they penetrated the capping and encountered iron ore or gray sericitic schist, and were abandoned. Evidence of an early interest in iron ore was found when the Chicago claim was stripped for mining. A narrow, winding crevice was discovered, which led downward 20 ft. through the capping to the underlying soft red hematite, in which a room 10 by 14 by 7 ft. had been excavated. Stone hammers and wedges and a few rusted pieces of iron were found on the floor, and the evidence is conclusive that the excavation was used up to rather recent times by Sioux Indian medicine men, to provide war paint. GEOLOGY AND ORE The Sunrise district is in the Hartville uplift, an anticlinal area in which pre-Cambrian rocks similar to those of the Black Hills and the Laramie Mountains are brought to the surface. The lowest part of the pre-Cambrian series exposed is a great thickness of pink, crystalline, Huronian dolomites with thin unstratified beds of schist and quartzite. "In an experiment on a trial embankment, the deformation mode of the improved ground at the toe of the embankment was compared with the deformation mode of the unimproved ground. This comparison showed that the behavior exhibited by the improved ground was the same as that exhibited by the unimproved ground, despite the low improvement rate (ap = 10%) of the ground improvement. Thus, the improved ground and the unimproved ground were found to be functioning as composite ground. Further, the strain that developed in the geo-textile used for the crushed-stone mat was considerably less than the strain specified by the design strength. As a result, it was found that a crushed-stone mat can serve as a mattress.OVERVIEW OF THE TEST CONSTRUCTIONLow Improvement-Rate Soil in Combination with Crushed-Stone MatIn Hokkaido, approximately 2,000 km2 of the land is peat land, an area almost as large as Tokyo. Such land accounts for 6% of Hokkaido’s plains and 2.4% of its total land area. The peat layer is normally 3 to 5 m thick and underlain by a layer of soft, cohesive soil whose thickness may exceed 20 m. In such a ground, consolidation using cement may generate differential settlement between improved soil as a result of embankment construction or lateral deformation caused by the slipping of unimproved ground. Therefore, the improvement ratio (ap) is designed to be at least 50% by the Manual for Construction on Soft Peaty Ground (CERI, 2011 [1]). Consolidation of ground with a low improvement ratio in combination with crushed stone-mat installation is a measure for soft ground (Figure 1). In this method, soil with a lower Improvement ratio than that of conventional improved soil (e.g., ap=10%) is placed beneath the entire embankment and a “crush stone mat”, a layer of crushed stone (t=0.5 m) enclosed by geo-textile, is then placed between the embankment and the soil."

Considerable difference of opinion seems to exist as to whether the rate of air flow when a fan is placed on a given duct should be determined by the use of static pressure or total pressure characteristics. A little study will show that both methods are correct. Assume that a fan is connected to a duct by an expansion piece as shown in Fig. 1, and that steady flow is established. Considering the atmospheric pressure as zero pressure, let the static head at the outlet of the fan be h and the velocity at this point be vl. The total head at the outlet is then h + „"• The total head at this point must be equal to the total head at the end of the duct plus the losses that have occurred between the two points.
