Legislation and Government Programs.-The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) held public hearings in early 1975 on proposed standards for exposure to inorganic arsenic. The findings obtained at the hearings will be considered to promulgate emission standards. Domestic Production.-Arsenic trioxide (As203) was produced domestically only at the Tacoma, Wash. copper smelter of ASARCO Incorporated. Production data cannot be published. Output rose 9% over that of 1974, shipments were less than half those of 1974, and stocks rose 31 %. Production of arsenic metal, begun by ASARCO in August 1974, continued in 1975.

Flotation gases and conditioning of the pulp with them are one of the important parameters of flotation and should be taken into account especially in the flotation of sulphide ores. In this study, flotation of pure chalcopyrite and pyrite samples were investigated with air, oxygen and nitrogen as flotation gas and the effect of conditioning with these three gases also were performed. Flotation gas was introduced for 5min, 10min, 15min and 20 min. For chalcopyrite flotation there was no drastic change in recovery when air, oxygen and nitrogen were used as flotation gas but conditioning the pulp with oxygen for 10 minutes increased the recovery about 8% where pulp potential has been approximately 25 mV with chalcopyrite and 150 mV with platinum electrodes. Conditioning with all three gases decreased the pyrite recovery by about 20% with 20 minutes conditioning. Pulp potential decreased in the presence of nitrogen while conditioning with air and oxygen increased the pulp potential for both electrodes. Generally potential increased for both minerals with oxygenation and aeration time but it was stable or slightly decreased with nitrogenation. Comparison of the gases showed that the different flotation gases do not effect flotation recovery but conditioning the pulp with these gases at pre-flotation effects chalcopyrite and pyrite flotation recovery, most dramatically pyrite.

THE ninth International Petroleum Exposition held at Tulsa, May 16-23, broke all size, sales, and attendance records of previous shows. More than $12,500,000 worth of equipment was on the grounds. There were 546 companies exhibiting and every available inch of the fifteen acres allotted to exhibit was taken. Drake Drive, the main street of the exposition, was literally "supply row" with National Supply, Frick-Reid, Continental Supply, Oil Well, Bridgeport, International Derrick and Equipment, and Parkersburg Rig and Reel companies occupying the entire space. The exhibitors were a cross section of American industry, with such firms, besides the strictly oil equipment firms, as the United States Steel Corp. and others allied to the oil industry, exhibiting. Between $10,000,000 and $15,000,000 of equipment is estimated to have been sold on the grounds during the exposition. Valuable contacts were made by the exhibitors with key oil men. Attendance passed the 175,000 mark for paid admissions in contrast with 154,000 for the eighth exposition in 1934. Visitors registered from Venezuela, Soviet Russia, India, Germany, Spain, Mexico, England, Canada, France, Colombia, Greece, West Indies, and Rumania. Hotels were overflowed and a housing bureau found rooms in private homes for thousands. Oil companies set up a schedule of shifts in order that as many of their field men might attend as possible. AS IS evident from the discussion in previous chapters, the methods by which an open-hearth heat may be made are numerous, but any heat, in the ingot form, may be classified as one of three types, depending upon the degree of deoxidation to which the metal is subjected. These are rimmed, semikilled, and killed, and desirable ingot structures, from the standpoint of distribution of porosity, are illustrated in Fig. 63. These are the most useful types of ingot structure [ ] and represent three stages in the continuous series from "wild" to "dead killed" (see Fig. 23, page 46) ; some of the variations of each type are discussed later in the chapter. The choice of ingot structure and of finishing practice used to produce the desired metal action in the molds is determined by consideration of: 1. Specified final analysis. As an example, the production of rimmed steels is mostly limited to carbon contents below 0.30 per cent and manganese contents below 0.60 per cent; on the other hand the production of low-carbon killed steel requires greater care.

This paper gives the results: first,, of a research into the somewhat extensive literature of titanium; and second, of a series of original tests upon the effect of titanium on iron castr ings. New investigations have also been made upon the effect of titanium on steel, but I hope to treat this subject in an independent paper at some later date, and, therefore, will not discuss the experiments in detail here. The combined results of this study, which extended over a period of more than two years, can be briefly summarized as follows : 1. Steel or cast-iron, in which the titanium is properly proportioned, and which has been properly treated, is improved in strength, toughness, and durability against wear, such 'as, for example, the wear of railroad-rails, of steel and chilled-iron rolls, car-wheels, etc. 2. These improvemerits seem to be caused, not so much by the direct effect of titanium on the metal, as by its cleansing influence in removing harmful impurities, such as oxygen and oxides, nitrogen, occluded slags, and perhaps also sulphur. It appears also to reduce segregation, which would contribute to the same end. 3. In order that its effects may be fully realized, the treatment of steel or iron with titanium must be correctly performed. Blasting is an essential component of most mining operations, and is used to reduce the rock mass to a workable size distribution, as well as to create stable openings and pit walls. Frequently, there is little difference between the designs of blasts to achieve these two functions, though more advanced operations have developed different designs for these very different functions. To assist in the appreciation of how blasting practices can impact on the stability of rock openings and pit excavations, this paper reviews the role of high pressure explosion gases on final block stability. It is assumed that the stability of all surface and underground excavations are, to a greater or lesser extent, controlled by the interaction between discrete rock blocks. Typically, these blocks will be defined by either natural, or excavation induced, jointing.

Among the objects of interest which the members of the Institute are invited to examine in connection with this meeting is the Brown segmental wire-gun, which will be seen in process of construction at the works of the Pennsylvania Diamond Drill and Manufacturing Company, at Birdsboro. This is a 5-inch breech-loading (highpower) rifle, 19 feet long, constructed upon the system of Mr. J. H. Brown, an inventor of recognized genius in many branches of mechanical industry, and under the engineering direction of Lieutenant G. N. Whistler, Fifth U. S. Artillery. The system consists essentially of the subdivision of the inner core or tube of the gun, which takes up the initial compression, into longitudinal segments of such size that a higher physical condition and degree of special elasticity may be set up therein than it is possible to produce in the larger masses of metal heretofore used for the tube of the modern high-power cannon. The process consists in winding layers of square steel wire, subjected to a constant tension of 130,000 pounds per square inch, around these segments, which, when so held together, form the tube of the gun. A lining-tube may or may not be used. The steel segments used in the gun now under construction are 18 feet 4 inches long, and 3 inches thick at the breech, from which they taper to 0.8 inches at the muzzle. The physical condition of the segments has been determined by test-pieces, cut from each end of each segment, which show the following characteristics: Tensile strength, 165,000 pounds per square inch. Elastic limit, 105,000 pounds per square inch. Elongation at rupture, 14 per cent. in 2 inches. They are of crucible chrome steel, made by the Carpenter Steel Works, at Reading, Pa. The wire which holds them together has 0.005 square inches sectional area and is wound under a constant tension of 650 pounds on each strand, equivalent to 130,000 pounds per square inch. Significantly reduce respirable dust exposures of longwall shearer operators when cutting out at the headgate. Approach As a result of Bureau research, a ventilation curtain is recommended to be mounted between the stage loader and the coal rib to more effectively prevent the ventilation air from blowing across the shearer drum as it cuts out at the headgate. Some mine operators already employ this method of reducing dust, but a vast majority do not. How It Works One source of extreme concentrations of respirable dust for longwall shearer operators is the shearer headgate drum as it cuts through into the headgate entry. As the drum cuts into the entry, it is exposed to the primary ventilation airstream. The high velocity air passes through and over the rotating drum, picking up large quantities of dust.

The progress in comminution is often described by the specific surface area and the energy utilization or the brakeage ratio and breakage function. The principal mechanisms of size reduction are therefore, well known. All four parameters share a common disadvantage: They are limited in describing the behavior of a feed material with fine particles and a wide particle size distribution. An alternative is to describe the progress in comminution with ? The particle size distributions Q(x) before and after the stress or ? The particle concentration ratio pcr(x), which combines these two states. In the case of a self-similar fracture behavior, (in short: self-similarity) the progress in comminution can be simplistically described by the relationship between a reference particle size and the stress intensity. Self-similarity means self-similar breakage functions of geometrically similar particles of the same strength, a certain stress situation and stresses up to the breakage point. Self-similar breakage functions show the same curve at different stress intensities when the fragment size x is normalized with a reference particle size xNorm. This behavior was demonstrated for single particle comminution repeatedly and unequivocally. In the field of particle bed comminution, these results differ in literature. Therefore, the self-similarity in particle bed comminution was systematically investigated at the Institute of Mechanical Process Engineering and Mineral Processing of the TU Bergakademie Freiberg as part of a research project. Limestone, quartz, silicon carbide and glass beads, were examined with a hydraulic press. The particle sizes covered monodisperse fractions in the range of 1-1000 µm, bimodal mixtures of these fractions and polydisperse fractions. The results obviously show that there is no self-similar fracture behavior in the case of glass beads, quartz and silicon carbide. Statements on the self-similarity of limestone are much more difficult: Only some of the investigated limestone fractions show a similar clear, non-self-similar behavior. Self-similar curves appear particularly for fine monodisperse fractions as well as bimodal mixtures, which stressed with pressures above 200 MPa. Considering the measurement accuracy of particle size analysis the coincidence of the curves can be explained by the fact that progress in comminution almost ends above 200 MPa. At this point, a hydrostatic stress state is reached in the particle bed which is known from the literature. This stress state inhibits further fractures. Overall, it has been verified for the investigated materials that there?s no self-similar fracture behavior in particle bed comminution. One reason for the diverse opinions in literature is that there are three types of particles after the comminution in the particle bed: ? Particles which are stressed below their breaking point, ? Particles which are stressed right up to the break point, and ? Particles which are stressed beyond their breaking point.

Aiming at many controversial reports on Raman spectral pattern of octamolybdate ion in aqueous solution appearing in the literature, a new method for the establishment of corresponding relation between Raman spectral pattern and chemical components of aqueous molybdate solution was put forward using spectroscopy measure and component analyses of saturated solution of ammonium octamolybdate hydrate known structure. It was found that the main characteristic of Raman spectral pattern of the saturated solution was described as the same ?double-peaks, hereinto a weak peak at the boundary? as some literature, but chemical components of the saturated solution were affirmed to be octamolybdate ion (Mo8O264-) and double protonated heptamolybdate ion (H2Mo7O244-), which were in equilibrium in aqueous solution each other. The authors propose that the pattern of the saturated solution can be regarded as the standard pattern of primiparous octamolybdate ion during acidified molybdate solution. It is satisfying that the standard pattern is applied to the identification of primiparous octamolybdate ion during acidified molybdate solution.

The effects of phyllosilicate minerals on the flotation performance and froth stability of a copper ore was investigated. It was found that various phyllosilicate minerals affect the copper recovery differently however they all caused the flotation grade to be reduced. The effect of different phyllosilicate minerals on the froth stability followed the order of talc >> montmorillonite > muscovite > kaolinite > illite. The results demonstrated that there could be a relationship between the deleterious effect of phyllosilicate minerals on the flotation and froth stability. Talc and montmorillonite have both shown the highest effect on the flotation recovery and grade as well as froth stability. On the other hand, illite has the least effect on the both flotation performance and froth stability. Kaolinite and muscovite also affected the copper flotation grade (but not the recovery) while they also affected the froth stability. Therefore it is possible to control the flotation performance when phyllosilicate minerals are present via monitoring and controlling froth stability which needs to be investigated further.

The Florida phosphate industry successfully uses froth flotation to concentrate phosphate in: the particle size range of approximately 28 to 150 mesh. However, as recently as 1965, coarse particles in the range of 14 to 28 mesh generally had not been beneficiated by conventional flotation methods at recoveries high enough to be considered adequate. It has been customary to upgrade this coarse material; by "agglomerate flotation" or "skin flotation" using belts, tables or spirals. While these devices have proved commercially effective, their capacities are much lower than those of froth flotation cells. To determine whether coarse phosphate material could be recovered successfully by froth flotation, Armour Agricultural Chemical Company began a series of pilot and plant tests; in April 1965. Objective of the tests was to compare over-all performance of a froth flotation cell design relatively new to the phosphate industry with results from the belt circuit at the Bartow, Fla., plant.

This study concerns itself with the effects of diesel exhaust on mine ventilation systems. The approach here consisted of the development of mathematical models for emissions, dilution, and dispersion of gaseous pollutants from diesels. The general scheme was to use partial differential equations to predict concentration growths. Specifically, the following situations were modeled: 1. A single stationary diesel engine working in a single roadway. 2. A single diesel engine moving with uniform velocity in a single roadway. 3. Multiple diesel engines moving continuously in a cycle in a roadway with appreciable leakage. 4 Multiple diesel engines moving continuously in a cycle in a roadway with little or no leakage. 5. Multiple diesel engines moving randomly in a roadway with uniform air velocity.

In engineering analyses, rock is frequently treated as a homogeneous, isotropic, and linearly elastic medium. However, rock material exhibits, in most cases, physical nonlinearity, time-dependency, and anisotropy. In some instances, anelasticity due to nonmechanical effects, such as density and temperature changes, must also be taken into account. The influence of these different anomalies in the physical behavior of a rock material is often neglected. An estimate of the discrepancies which are introduced when classical theory of elasticity is used is consequently required. The easiest theoretical path by which these discrepancies can be analyzed is to vary the constitutive equations of the rock material. The constitutive equations, representing various physical experiences with different types of media, define a class of ideal substances. Assuming different constitutive equations for the description of the rock physical behavior, one can establish a sensitivity analysis to determine how much information is contained in elastic theory for reliable design purposes. The method may be applied also using numerical techniques (e.g., finite element or finite differences) which, because of the nature of the formulation, require one to assume in each case the rock constitutive equations. Theoretical and experimental work is needed to be able to perform such analyses with confidence. Adequate and practical procedures for the determination of the material functions which enter the various constitutive equations must be established. This paper presents such an attempt with respect to the simulation of some behavior patterns of rock material. It is felt worthwhile to stimulate activity in this field and it is hoped to contribute to this objective.

Non-ferrous smelting industry in Japan often had the severe problems about the over production of sulfuric acid. There has been such a closed relation between amount of sulfuric acid from non-ferrous smelting industry and the products of copper, zinc and lead metals that the production of one ton of copper accompanies three tons of H2S04. When the proper balance exists in both markets this situation certainly brings bigger profits. In Xining and Metallurgical Institute of Japan the research commitee concerned with the fixation process of sulfur in non-ferrous smelting industry was established in 1977 and continued the activity for four years untill 1981. This paper will introduce some of the activities involved in the report published by the committee.

"Dado el aumento de la carga eléctrica y la escasez de agua encontrada en la mina Cerro de Pasco Corporation, se vio necesaria la reducción de consumo tanto para la empresa como para los que compran dicha energía, viéndose afectada las subestaciones que alimentan las siguientes propiedades de la C. de P.; la Mina de Goyllarisquizga, mina y concentradora de Cerro, mina y concentradora de Morococha, concentradorade Mahr Túnel, mina San Cristóbal, y mina y concentradora de Casapalca, así como las municipalidades de las mismas, entre otros. Por tal motivo, el objetivo del presente texto busca incrementar la capacidad de las plantas generadoras existentes a través de varios proyectos como la estimulación de lluvias, desviación del rio Colorado, el dragrado del canal de Upamayo, la elevación del lago Junín. Para el programa de refinamiento de zinc, se autorizó la construcción del proyecto hidroeléctrico de Paucartambo con una capacidad de 65 mil K, obteniéndose las siguientes características: la carretera de acceso, represa de desviación, la bocatoma, desarenador, cámara de carga, túnel principal, cámara de equilibrio, válvula de mariposa, funicular paralelo, casa de fuerza, tres turbinas de impulsión, generadores, subestación. Por último, se instaló el sistema de corriente de alta frecuencia que ayudará a las comunicaciones, telemediciones, control de relays de sobrecarga, así como permitirá que las subestaciones entre Carhuamayo y la Oroya controlen la energía usada en los distintos puntos centrales del sistema. "

The heap-leaching process is widely used for recovering different metals. In Chile, copper production by heap leaching has been accounting for between 30 and 40 percent of annual copper production over the last 10 years. This level of production has been achieved through and supported by the use of a mathematical relation known as the leaching ratio (LR), which correlates operational parameters with metal extraction in a heap-leaching operation. In spite of the widespread industrial use of this relation, few scientific studies mention it. This disparity between industrial practice and scientific research could lead to operational decisions that lack substantial theoretical support and to scientific studies with limited industrial impact. This study describes the LR and its current uses and limitations.

My first paper dealing with the theories of the hardening of steel by rapid cooling was published in the Transactions of this Institute in 1896— 30 years ago-under the title "The Microstructure of Steel and the Current Theories of Hardening," hence, also, the title of the present paper. It was extensively discussed and was, I believe, one of the starting points of many subsequent papers and discussions of the same subject, dis-cusssions which at times became almost violent and which led to the formation of different schools such as the "Carbonists" and the "Allo-tropists." Some of the older members of the Institute, who took part in the debate or who were interested observers, will, I am sure, have kept a vivid remembrance of it. The controversy gradually quieted down, apparently for lack of ammunition, without any side acknowledging defeat. Recently, however, interest in it ha been revived through the claims of some that these vexed questions had at last been solved. In an effort to ascertain if possible the prevailing view of those best qualified to express an opinion a questionnaire was submitted to the following gentlemen: J. 0.
