Practically all underground work on the Minnesota iron ranges is done by miners working on a so-called contract wage system. This system, while it has certain advantages over the straight day's pay or company-account method of wage payment, has serious and vital defects. In view of the scarcity and demands of labor, it is important that employers of labor scrutinize their systems of wage payments carefully, not only to save losses and trouble, due to labor disturbances, but also to secure the greatest efficiency of their workmen and reduce their operating costs. It is admitted that an adequate, just, and equitable wage is the prime factor in bringing about these benefits. The wage of labor and its method of application and payment have been, and always will be, the main factors in the unrest and dissatis. faction of labor. Not only does labor want and need an adequate wage, assuming that work is adequately performed, but it wants and is entitled to a just and equitable wage. Labor must have respect for the fairness of the wage and for the fairness of the management in the application of the wage It is conceded that the Minnesota iron miners are now, and have been, in the main paid adequately, but the inherent defects of the so-called contract system prevent any just or equitable application of this wage to the various units of the labor body. The defects of the contract system, with its obvious inequalities, favoritisms, and injustices, are cancers in the brain of labor. Every thinking miner realizes these defects and knows just what they are; the unthinking do not realize the details of the subject, but each month they are forcibly reminded of these defects through the pay envelope. As practiced on the iron ranges, however, the so-called "contract " system is not a contract and the name is a misnomer. No true contractual obligation exists. As usually practised, the contract system involves the setting of a price per foot in development work, or per foot or per car, usually the latter, in slicing or stoping, by the mining captain, and assumes its acceptance, though often under protest, by the men. A price is set for each working place, in which there are usually two men per shift. This price includes labor and supplies, such as explosives, fuse and caps, shovels, carbide, etc., and the men divide the total earnings less the amount expended for supplies. Vaal Reefs Exploration and Mining Company Limited operates one of the largest producing gold mines in the world. The annual production of 76 tons of gold from 12 million tons of ore treated is obtained mainly from underground sources. Daily some 6.6 km of stope face is blasted and 41 tons of explosives is used to break the rock. The mine employs 45 000 men of whom 35 000 work underground. The company operates nine large vertical shaft systems of which seven extend more than 2000 m below surface and an eighth, currently being sunk, will bottom at 3700 m below surface.

"To make space for the new South Ferry Station in lower Manhattan, engineers and contractors carved out a new tunnel beneath three operating subway tunnels and tangentially to yet another tunnel. Creating the space required the design and construction of complex temporary excavation support and underpinning systems and the design and installation of real-time monitoring systems. Construction for the new station and tunnel was mainly cut-and cover in a mixed-face area of soil and rock approximately 2,000 linear ft long, 60 ft wide and up to 70 ft deep. Close coordination between the design/build team and the project owner, the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA), was critical.With the construction of this $400 million project, the MTA and New York City Transit (NYCT) are correcting the numerous physical and operational deficiencies of the existing station and improving the lives of millions of commuters. Built in 1905, the original South Ferry Station is on the IRT Broadway–Seventh Avenue Line of the New York City Subway and is the southern terminal of the #1 subway service, which forms a loop to return uptown. The station has a sharply curved single platform on the outside of the outer track of a two track loop. This platform is short and does not allow the rear five cars of a normal 10-car subway train to load or unload. In addition, once the train stops at the station, commuters wait while retractable floor grates bridge the gap created between the platform and the subway car doors, and then they have only one exit from the station. Spray nozzles keep the tracks lubricated to reduce the train wheels’ friction caused by the tight curve. The sharp curvature of the loop and the inability to use half of the subway car doors slow train operation. With the new ADA-accessible station, 10-car trains will be able to open all doors, and additional entrances, escalators and elevators will greatly reduce travel times."

The outlook for coal continued to improve in 1980, fueling expectations that a long-awaited boom is at hand. The surprising surge in coal exports contributed to the latest wave of optimism. Overseas exports hit 66 Mt in 1980, buoyed by a significant increase in demand for steam coal, up from 1979's 2.3 Mt to 15 Mt in 1980. US coal production rose 6.9% to 750 Mt in 1980 and total coal consumption increased 8.1% to about 725 Mt, due primarily to higher world oil prices and setbacks in the US nuclear power industry. Yet the industry is beset with problems-both internal and external. Although demand for US coal is growing, the industry's excess productive capacity is estimated at over 90 Mt/a. Public utilities, where real increases in coal consumption must come, are still moving slowly, blaming delays on antipollution equipment costs. Coal supplies are uncertain, subject to the vagaries of the UMW. For the sixth time since 1964, the coal industry and UMW failed to renew their labor contract without a national strike, reinforcing the perception held overseas that the US is not a reliable supplier. The expected boom in coal exports will, in part, depend on our ability to assure foreign buyers that US sources are dependable. The US industry is also plagued by inadequate facilities linking mines and consumers: inadequate rail systems, coal ports, and barges, For US producers to be competitive, ports must be expanded, rail lines improved, and harbors dredged to allow 136-kt ships to load coal. The im¬provements will require an enormous commitment and investment. Despite these major problems and unresolved issues, two factors continue to favor an increased reliance on coal as an energy source: abundant US reserves and coal's comparative price advantage. Coal's performance in the 1980s may at last exceed its promise.

Western Australia is the largest state in Australia with an area one and three quarter times the size of Texas. Most of the State is desert or semi-desert, and only the southwest corner is heavily populated. The State has a population of one and a half million people, and one million of these live in and around the city of Perth. Perth is located on the narrow Swan Coastal Plain and is flanked by the Indian Ocean and the Darling Plateau. The Darling Plateau is an ancient peneplain rising some 300 metres above sea level, and forms an important resource base for the population.

"A set of state-of-the-art methods have been applied to study ultrafine particles and nanoscale species arising on mineral surfaces upon milling, interaction with flotation reagents, and leaching of base metal sulfide ores in order to gain insights into interfacial mechanisms. The fine fractions produced by ball milling of a Pb-Zn Gorevsky ore and four Cu-Ni sulfide ores studied with laser diffraction, dynamic light scattering, zeta-potential measurement, Xray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), SEM, TEM and other techniques. The particle size distributions had, aside from the peaks at 20-60 ?m, maxima near 1-2 ?m; the flotation was considerably suppressed when the yield of positively charged ultrafine particles approached tenths % (several kg per ton). High-energy XPS and X-ray absorption spectra revealed that sulfide minerals depleted in metal in air and aqueous solutions were composed of outer “polysulfide” layers, strata with disulfide species, and heavily defective underlayers, and “passivation” was explained by stability of the metal-deficit structures. Dixanthogen at pyrite and copper-activated sphalerite, dixanthogen and then cuprous xanthate on chalcopyrite, and chemisorbed xanthate at galena were specified as the main interfacial products using cryo-XPS of fast-frozen flotation slurries. The particle size, zeta-potential and behavior of colloids of Cu and Pb xanthates and dixanthogens were largely determined by the initial ratio of a cation and collector; the properties of copper xanthate nanoparticles were also affected by incorporated dixanthogen (about 15 wt.%). Submicrometer gas domains of 3-8 nm in height and “hydrophobic” forces upon the probe retraction were found on xanthate-treated minerals using atomic force microscopy and spectroscopy; their impact on flotation is briefly discussed.INTRODUCTIONInterfacial phenomena play a key role in flotation, leaching, water purification and related environmental processes. The mineral processing and extraction of metal from sulfide ores commonly involves milling the ore, which produces, along with the particles of 20 µm to 100 µm, mineral entities ranging from micrometer to submicrometer and nanometer scale. Furthermore, ultrafine particles of flotation reagents, products of metal sulfide oxidation, and so on may form spontaneously and accumulate in production water, flotation froth, deposit on mineral surfaces, affecting the flotation performance, and then enter waste waters, mine and natural drainage, polluting soils, surface- and ground waters (Miettinen et al., 2010; Wang et al., 2014). The efficiency of flotation and hydrometallurgical recovery of values, environmental issues are crucially dependent on the state of mineral surfaces. Particularly, it is generally accepted that the surface non-stoichiometry of sulfide minerals induced by oxidation and leaching should affect their hydrophobicity and reactivity, including so-called “passivation”, but the nature of such surface layers are still a matter of controversy (see, for example, Holmes and Crundwell, 2013). Another phenomenon attracting rapidly growing interest in several areas is low-dimensional gas species (“nanobubbles”) at hydrophobic surfaces that may play a decisive role in particle-bubble attachment in flotation but remains scarcely investigated up to now (Xing et al., 2017). Here, we survey our recent results on the abovementioned problems applying a series of rather new methods and approaches; more details can be found in refs. Karacharov et al., 2016; Mikhlin et al., 2015; 2016; 2016a; 2016b; 2016c; 2016d; 2017; 2017a; Vorobyev et al., 2017."

OSIRIS is a continuous monitoring system for respirable dust which has been specifically designed for mining and related industries. By using the latest microprocessor technology, OSIRIS provides a sophisticated dust measuring system which is a cost effective alternative to regular gravimetric sampling. The system is certified intrinsically safe for use underground. Up to eight underground OSIRIS sensors can be controlled and monitored by a single IBM PC computer located at the mine surface. This computer provides continuous and instantaneous information about the dust concentrations at the sites being monitored. Information is available in tabular and graphical form. The paper gives details of proving trials of the OSIRIS system in some UK coal mines. During these trials, adjacent OSIRIS sensors placed on the same underground roadway cross-section gave virtually identical results. Throughout a good correlation was obtained with conventional gravimetric dust samples. The OSIRIS equipment proved both reliable and easy to operate. Water drives may be natural or artificial. For the case of a natural water-drive reservoir, the volume of water influx corresponding to reservoir pressuve-production history may be calculated by means of the material bal-ance-unsteady state equation. For the artificial water drive or pattern injection water flood, the material balance equation is sufficient to determine the reservoir pressure-production, injection history. However, for both cases to reliably predict reservoir performance, it is necessary to calculate the saturation distribution of the reservoir fluids at different stages of depletion. This paper consolidates the various equations used to determine the performance of water-drive reservoirs into one approach that is applicable to any reservoir that has a natural water drive or is to be produced by water injection. The numerical procedure has been simplified considerably, and the solution is adaptable to either hand calculations or digital computer operation. INTRODUCTION A water-drive reservoir is one in which the predominant source of energy for production of oil results from the encroachment of water into the oil zone. The water drive may be either natural or artificial. Water invasion takes place by expansion of water in the aquifer as a result of the pressure decline transmitted from the oil reservoir. Because water is practically incompressible, a natural water drive requires an extensive aquifer containing a volume of water many times the volume of oil in the reservoir. Provided the permeability of the formation is reasonably high, a moderate decline of reservoir pressure usually causes adequate water influx. If the reservoir pressure decline becomes excessive because of low permeability or a high rate of production, part of the oil production may result from the liberation of dissolved gas which may cause excessive quantities of free gas to be produced along with the oil. In extreme cases, reservoir pressure may decline so rapidly as to cause the oil to be produced predominantly by dissolved gas drive, leading to abandonment of the reservoir before the advancing water has had a chance to flush the entire reservoir. In reservoirs that are not connected to extensive aquifers, an artificial water drive may be created by injecting water into or around the lower edges of a reservoir. Sometimes water is injected within the reservoir through wells interspersed among the producing wells. When injection is carried out in such fashion, the reservoir is in effect subdivided into a number of separate producing segments, in each of which the displacement of oil is simultaneously taking place, and the shapes of which are fixed by the well patterns employed. Because of the natural tendency of oil and water to segregate according to their relative densities, water will tend to migrate downdip regardless of where injected. Accordingly, the injected fluids can be retained within the intended reservoir segments only when conditions are unfavorable to their migration under the force of gravity. Pattern injections are usually confined, therefore, to reservoirs having low structural relief, or low permeability, or when production and injection rates are such that fluid movements in the reservoir are dominated by the pressure gradients rather than by the force of gravity. This study provides quantitative data on vein distributions within seven selected epithermal systems, four deposits hosted predominantly in rhyolitic rocks: Ohui, Wharekirauponga, Neavesville and Komata, and three major deposits mainly hosted in andesite: Martha Hill, Golden Cross and Karangahake. The technique of fractal analysis was used to help quantify vein distribution patterns. The fractal dimensions (D) obtained are related to the number of veins per metre, the degree of vein clustering, and vein thickness. An increase in any of these tends to increase the fractal dimension. It is the relative relationship of these parameters that is important for the characterisation of vein distributions, and the comparison of different deposits. Within the same systems, the rhyolites are characterised by lower vein thickness and vein density, but have a higher degree of vein clustering compared to the andesites. Sections that are deeper and more centrally located within the epithermal system and/or close to major structures, tend to have a greater degree of vein clustering, higher average vein thickness and density, and higher thickness to density ratios. This depth control is most pronounced in epithermal gold-silver systems because they have formed at shallow crustal levels where physico-chemical conditions change drastically both vertically and laterally. In addition to lithological and structural control at vein scale, deposit scale structure is of great importance in the deposition of economic mineralisation. Large open vein structures capable of sustaining high fluxes of hydrothermal fluid, favourable for the formation of large, high-grade gold deposits, are best developed in andesite sequences.

"High voltage electric pulse comminution (SELFRAG) relies on inducing electrical breakdown that occurs when the resistivity of a dielectric is insufficient to completely block all transfer of electricity while the conductivity is not high enough to fully accommodate the flow of electricity without considerable changes to the crystal lattice. The technology is based on introducing the electrical discharges into solids immersed in water and placed between two electrodes. The technology has received significant attention since investigations have revealed the potential for fully fragmenting particles or pre-weakening rocks in order to reduce the energy consumption in comminution practices, improve liberation and potentially increase the recovery in mineral processing. Mineralogical analysis of samples showed possible liberation at coarser sizes by high voltage breakage in comparison with conventional mechanical comminution.This study explored the potential of implementing SELFRAG to treat the Sandvik’s Mittersill mine tungsten ore (scheelite) for recovery improvement. Accordingly, standard SELFRAG tests were conducted on four samples from the tungsten process plant to evaluate the energy-breakage relation and potential to liberate the value minerals at coarser size fraction for recovery improvement. The size reduction of the ore after processing with SELFRAG revealed that size deportment occurs at 0.4, 0.2, and 0.1 mm, which indicated potential liberation of gangue and target minerals at respective sizes. In comparison with conventional milling, the difference is the deportment of values into 0.4 mm sizes, which was, to some extent, confirmed by SEM liberation analysis. However, more tests are needed to proof the concept. The study has indicated that, despite consuming more energy in comparison with conventional mechanical comminution, there are promising prospects in liberating the values at coarser fraction and improve recovery by making use of SELFRAG. The energy consumption can be reduced through customized generator and equipment setup, which must be further investigated."

"For completion of projects in time with positive results, improvements of productivity and effective project management procedures have become extremely important. This paper discusses a milestone project comprising 198 residential units of stilt plus 4 levels that highlighted the benefits of these key aspects. Success of ground modification procedure benefitting the entire cycle involving End Users, Suppliers, Bankers and Developer is discussed.Soil profile for a considerable depth comprises weak layers of silty clay and sandy clay with varying consistency. Deep foundations have been an automatic choice of foundation for major buildings constructed in similar environment. After serious geotechnical appraisal, reconsideration of the foundation system with an alternative solution of Ground Improvement was found to be optimal in terms of Cost and Time. Full raft foundation on the improved ground by installation of Vibro Stone Columns (dry bottom feed method) was considered as an alternative foundation system. The ground improvement works were completed within 6 weeks (as against 6 months to that of pile foundations) that was made possible through effective project management. Full size plate load tests were conducted to ascertain effectiveness of the ground improvement works. Success of the foundation system was proved by full scale monitoring of foundation settlement during and after completion of the project over a span of 2 years. This paper describes design considerations, quality control in the construction of Vibro Stone Columns (dry bottom feed method) and performance monitoring of the project thereafter.INTRODUCTIONGenerally in weak deposits, deep foundations like bored cast-in-situ piles and driven piles have historically been the foundation choice for major buildings and other structures. Construction of pile foundations is becoming a challenge due to their high cost, large construction time and due to severe environmental issues (noise pollution, ground vibrations and carbon footprint). Since the proposed building complex is located within the proximity of a well-developed residential locality, objections raised by neighborhoods to pile driving activities called for a rethinking on the foundation system.The top 6m to 8m of soil profile comprises of silty clay / sandy clay having highly varying consistency. GWT was encountered at 3.0m below the existing ground level. Under this situation, the reconsideration of the type of foundation system with respect to the geotechnical analysis gave a thought to assess feasibility of ground improvement system."

THE increased demand for titanium alloys with improved high-temperature creep strengths has stimulated interest in silicon as an alloying addition to titanium. Silicon is a potent solid-solution strength-ener and, if added in sufficient concentration and properly heat-treated, can also dispersion-strengthen titanium by eutectoid decomposition.' However, better understanding of the nature and distribution of the resulting silicide dispersion in more highly alloyed titanium matrices is necessary for the development of useful titanium alloys which utilize the latter strengthening mechanism. This note describes the chemical and crystallographic characteristics of the silicide phase as it occurs in a typical high-temperature near-a titanium alloy matrix. Several Ti-6A1-3Sn-3Zr a11oys containing various amounts of silicon ranging from 0.1 to 1.0 pct were melted as 10- to 20-lb ingots and processed into 1/2-in.-diam bar stock. The microstructures of specimens annealed at various temperatures were conveniently summarized by the (Ti-6Al-3Sn-3Zr)-Si pseudobinary phase diagram illustrated in Fig. 1. Comparison with the Ti-Si equilibrium diagram indicates the substitutional solutes (Al-Sn-Zr) increase the eutectoid temperature and decrease the a terminal solubility. Annealing at temperatures sufficiently high to dissolve the silicon in a ß solid solution and cooling rapidly enough to preclude coarsening generally produced a uniform dispersion of fine silicide particles, whereas annealing at temperatures near but below the ß transus produced relatively coarse silicide particles. Annealing in the limited a, plus 3 region produced a duplex coarse and fine silicide array. Several a-annealed specimens were examined by X-ray diffraction to determine the crystallographic identity of the precipitate phase. Copper Ka X-ray diffraction patterns of bulk specimens which contained 0.5 and 0.8 pct Si were virtually identical to that of the silicon-free Ti-6Al-3Sn-3Zr base alloy except for a slight shift in some of the high-angle diffraction lines. One of the primary requirements for successful operation of an enriched gas-drive project is to control the composition of injection gas. This can become a serious and difficult problem, particularly in cases where the enrichment material is being furnished from a number of field -produced gas streams. It is possible to effect control of the injection gas composition through frequent or continuous sampling; however, this can be extremely costly and, in many cases, impractical due to laboratory requirements of time. Another alternative would be to provide a calculation technique which would be flexible and sufficiently accurate to predict composition of the liquid and gas streams of interest at any point in the system. The purpose of this paper is to discuss a technique that was used successfully on an operating enriched gas-drive project for developing information which could be used for controlling composition of the injected gas. FIELD OPERATIONS The particular field (hereafter called Example field) in the example operation being discussed is composed of four oil reservoirs (A. B, C and E) and one gas condensate reservoir (D). Casinghead gas from the oil reservoirs and gas from the gas condensate reservoir are gathered through a field gathering system as shown in Fig. I for injection into Reservoir C. The gas mixture which is recovered from the five reservoirs for injection purposes is composed of gases liberated in 19 individual separators, each operating at a separate temperature and pressure. PROPOSED CALCULATION TECHNIQUE It is well known that vapor-liquid equilibrium calculations in general use throughout the petroleum industry can be used to predict reliably the phase behavior of hydrocarbon mixtures, particularly at pressures less than 1,000 psig. It is then a simple matter to account for the material on a ComPonent basis by m''ing flash and material balance calculations at each separation point in a hydrocarbon system. Accordingly, it was proposed to use vapor-liquid equilibrium and material balance cal- culations with a medium-sized electronic digital computer as a basis for developing a control procedure for use in controlling injection gas composition in the enriched gas-drive project. Although the approach is a simple one, the numerous vapor-liquid equilibrium calculations involved make the problem laborious; in this particular case, it would have been impractical to make sutficiently complete analysis without the aid of digital computing equipment. "1. INTRODUCTIONDo contractual practices affect project outcome? Can better contractual practices improve the likelihood of project success? The consensus amongst experts is that better contractual practices really do improve project outcomes. With this in mind the members of the International Tunnelling Association (ITA) Working Group 3 on Contractual Practices (WG3) pooled their collective knowledge to publish in 2011 the document entitled The ITA Contractual Framework Checklist for Subsurface Construction Contracts (ITA Working Group 3, 2011). Written for projects involving significant subsurface works, e.g. tunnels and caverns, the ITA Framework Checklist explains the major contractual issues that must be considered to ensure a successful project. Its goal is not to specify how each issue should be resolved, but rather to highlight the issues and give recommendations on how they should be addressed. The Checklist is compatible with, and provides guidance for reviewing, standard contracts such as FIDIC and NEC. One of the authors is a co-author of the Checklist and has contributed to previous papers describing the Checklist and its applicability to hydropower projects (Hodgkinson & Wilson 2014, Hodgkinson & Wilson 2015). The Checklist identifies a series of issues that should be contractually defined, which can be summarized as follows: •,Methods for dealing with geotechnical uncertainties should be defined in the contract •,There should be an appropriate level of geotechnical/geological investigation •,Sufficient mobilization periods should be allowed •,Sufficient time should be allowed for testing and commissioning •,Procedures for timely dispute resolution should clearly defined •,Quality and performance requirements should be clearly defined and measurable •,Provision should exist for cost consequences of unforeseen circumstances •,Dispute resolution processes should be clearly defined •,Payment processes should be fair and clearly defined •,Risk should be clearly allocated and parties should be able to bear the risks they carry •,There should be a mechanism for adjusting payments according to conditions •,The risk management approach should be clearly defined •,Admeasurement or unit price approaches are recommended •,The responsibilities of each party must be clearly defined •,The consequences of non-performance should be clearly defined •,The construction programme (schedule) should be realistic."

The first neutrinos in nature ever detected by man were "caught" in a unique laboratory some 3 km (over 2 miles) underground in one of the world's deepest mine shafts at East Rand Proprietary Mines (ERPM), Boksburg. Only 100 m from where gold is being mined from the rock face a small team of South African and American physicists work on one of the most fascinating and important fundamental research projects that is currently exciting the imagination of the scientific world. Neutrinos are sub-atomic particles just as are protons, neutrons and electrons, but they are unique in that they have neither electric charge nor mass. Cosmic neutrinos travel at the speed of light and penetrate stars and planets. Even a million kilometres of solid lead would not provide a satisfactory shield against them. Stars are believed to "burn" by means of nuclear reactions which produce enormous fluxes of neutrinos. The sun, for example, illuminates the earth with visible light, but also bathes it with neutrinos. After World War II, two American physicists, Profs Frederick Reines and Clyde Cowan, experimenting at a large nuclear reactor, succeeded in obtaining direct evidence of the existence of the laboratory-produced neutrino. It then became very important to establish whether neutrinos also existed in nature. This knowledge would lead to a greater understanding of the forces of nuclear physics, of the behaviour of nuclear particles and, indeed, is also relevant to astrophysics. From the start it was clear that the search for "natural" neutrinos would be difficult. Questions which arose were- * how could they be traced if they were without mass or electric charge? * how could other nuclear particles be screened off? * could these not be wrongly detected, or even prevent accurate detection of neutrinos? Neutrinos were known to be produced along with charged particles, by the reaction of primary cosmic rays with the constituents of the atmosphere. It was also known that when the neutrinos collided with matter, they themselves produced the same type of charged particle which could be detected if the unwanted charged particles from the atmosphere could be screened off. What was needed, therefore, was a laboratory where the particles produced in the atmosphere could be screened out, yet which would receive and detect the particles produced by the neutrons' collision with the matter (solid rock) in the vicinity of the laboratory. This meant that scientists either had to build a laboratory with an enormously thick lead shield for their detection work. . . or they could go as near as possible to the centre of the earth where only charged nuclear particles of the very highest energies could penetrate. ERPM was clearly the most suitable place in the world where so effective a "neutrino trap" could be set. Under more than 3 000 m of solid rock the apparatus for detecting neutrinos is well shielded against unwanted nuclear particles produced in the cosmic radiation which can reach the laboratory only in a steeply vertical trajectory. Other particles are easily stopped by the great thickness of rock. The air-conditioned laboratory is at one end of a 150 m long tunnel, 2,5 m high and wide, blasted from the rock. The electronic recording equipment is housed here, while the rest of the tunnel is filled with the detection system. When a charged particle passes through a detector element, it produces a minute flash of light which is recorded and which triggers a flash-tube array. This then defines the trajectory of the charged particle, which is also recorded on film for analysis. So far 82 neutrinos have been detected, 50 at the present level and 32 at a higher level, and the findings have borne out the physicists' theoretical expectations. In this joint project Profs Reines, J. P. F. Sellschop, Director of the Witwatersrand University's Nuclear Research Unit and M. F. Crouch of the Case-Western Reserve University of Ohio are the Chief Investigators. INTRODUCTION The Heath Steele mine is located in the Bathurst-Newcastle area of northern New Brunswick. It is jointly owned by American Metal Climax, Inc. and the International Nickel Company of Canada who hold a 75% and 25% interest, respectively. The ore deposits of lead, zinc and copper sulphide occur in very fine grained pyrite and/or pyrrhotite masses. A consistent spatial relationship with a quartz feldspar porphyry is characteristic of these deposits and the many other similar sulphide deposits in the district. The two principal mineral assemblages of pyrite-sphalerite-galena, and pyrrhotite-chalcopyrite-pyrite, occupy characteristic positions relative to the enclosing rocks. This feature and the nature of the sulphide mineralization are described and the variations in metal content are noted .with special emphasis on the lead-zinc ore zones. The mine product ion rate is 3,000 tons per day of a mixed lead- zinc and copper ore which is extracted from the B-1 zone. The complex nature of the ores presents many metallurgical problems. Optimum metal recoveries are achieved when milll feed grades are relatively consistent and proportions of the contained metals are with in acceptable limits. Ore outlines and stoping blocks are delimited by close spaced diamond drilling. From this information it is possible to forecast the grade of any portion of a stoping block. Production from the various stopes may then be scheduled so as to achieve an acceptable mill feed grade.

Introduction The Fortitude deposit is located in Nevada's Battle Mountain mining district in the central Great Basin region of the Basin and Range province of the western US. The deposit is at Copper Canyon in the southernmost portion of the district, about 19 km (12 miles) southwest of Battle Mountain (Fig. 1). Mining activity in the district began in 1866 (Roberts and Arnold, 1965). Base and precious metals were mined by underground methods intermittently until 1955. Placer gold was first discovered at Copper Canyon in 1912. Moderate scale dredging of alluvial gravel at the mouth of Copper Canyon was conducted by the Natomas Co. from 1944 to 1955 (Johnson, 1973). In 1967, Duval Corp. began large scale open-pit copper mining. (Sayers, Tippett, and Fields, 1968). Copper prices decreased and precious metals prices increased in the mid-1970s so Duval's exploration efforts at Copper Canyon shifted to precious metals. These exploration efforts resulted in the discovery of the Tomboy-Minnie deposits and shortly afterward, the Northeast Extension deposit at Copper Canyon (Blake, Wotruba, and Theodore, 1984; Fig. 2). The Fortitude deposit was discovered in late 1980, after Duval had proceeded with precious metals production at Copper Canyon. Converting the existing plant facilities at Copper Canyon to a precious metals recovery system was completed in 1978 (Jackson, 1982). Production from the Tomboy-Minnie deposits began in early 1979. Precious metals production moved to the Northeast Extension deposit in 1982. In late 1984, after three years of preproduction stripping and mining of the Upper Fortitude ore zone, production from the higher grade Lower Fortitude ore zone began. Currently, Battle Mountain Gold Co. operates the Fortitude deposit. Production from the Battle Mountain mining district before 1967 included 4.6 t (150,000 oz) of gold, 65.3 t (2.1 million oz) of silver, 13.6 kt (15,000 st) of copper, 4.5 kt (5,000 st) of lead, and 13.6 kt (15,000 st) of zinc (Roberts and Arnold, 1965). At the time of Duval's 1967 start-up, ore reserves at Copper Canyon included 12.6 Mt (14 million st) in the East ore body and another 3.6 Mt (4 million st) in the West ore body. Both had average grades of 0.79% copper, 16.1 g/t (0.47 oz per st) silver and 0.86 g/t (0.025 oz per st) gold (Blake et al., 1984). The Tomboy-Minnie deposits collectively contained 3.5 Mt (3.9 million st) of ore grading 3.09 g/t (0.09 oz per st) gold and 9.6 g/t (0.28 oz per st) silver. The Northeast Extension reserves were identified as 1.4 Mt (1.5 million st) of ore with an average grade of 2.9 g/t (0.085 oz per st) gold and 5.1 g/t (0.15 oz per st) silver. Initial total reserve estimates for the Fortitude deposit were 14.5 Mt (16 million st) grading 5.14 g/t (0.15 oz per st) gold and 29.8 g/t (0.87 oz per st) silver (Jackson, 1982). Therefore, before large scale mining, the Copper Canyon area contained a minimum of 102.6 t (3.3 million oz) of gold and 541 t (17.4 million oz) of silver as mineable reserves. The Fortitude deposit reserves as of Jan. 1, 1985 were 10.6 Mt (11 million st) grading at 5.28 g/t (0.154 oz per st) gold and 28.5 g/t (0.83 oz per st) silver. THE increased moisture due to water¬spraying for coal dust control is of interest even for mines from which the coal is to be wet-washed before screening, because in many cases wet coal dust materially decreases the loading efficiency of men an equipment at the faces. It also causes serious increase in the normal wear and deterioration of all equipment with which it comes in contact. It is important to the consumer if it increases his as-receive moisture. No attempt will be made in this paper t cover the entire subject of water-spraying of coal for dust control. It will be confine to discussion and data on (r) percentages c dust in bituminous coals, (2) moisture increases due to spraying for dust control in mines or plants by methods which have proven satisfactory for periods of one to five or more years, and (3) a few suggestions for research. SIZE AND PERCENTAGE OF COAL DUST The U. S. Bureau of Mines1 classifies a coal dust all bituminous coal passing 20-mesh sieve (0.0328 in. square opening; The percentage of such dust to be found is ROM coal, of course, varies widely wit. the characteristics of the seam, and with the methods used in the mining and in the preparation of the coal. ROM screen analyses of 12 U. S. coals selected at random from personal files given in Table I show: A few other screen analyses examined indicating 40 pct or more of 2o-mesh X o dust in 3/8 in. X o-sizes were not included because of uncertainty that they were representative. The number of results in Table I is not sufficient to give a reliable estimate of the average, or of the range to be expected, but it indicates that in every case the coal dust is a relatively large percentage of the total ROM coal, and, of course, a progressively larger percentage of resultants as the larger sizes are separated for marketing.

"It is well known among flotation practitioners that the contact angle can be correlated with the amount of material recovered from feed by flotation. The contact angle of solids can easily be modified by the addition of a collector. However, some collectors also have frothing properties thus altering the solid and bubble surface properties simultaneously. To avoid this problem, a technique has previously been used in which silanol groups are attached to the surfaces of the particles, but this method has its own problems. In this work, silica particles with various surface hydrophobicities were prepared using an esterification process. By using alcohols with different hydrocarbon chain lengths, from 4 to 12 carbon atoms, surfaces with a wide range of contact angles could be prepared. The technique was used in the modification of silica particles that were tested in a fluidized bed flotation column, and a laboratory mechanical flotation cell. In parallel experiments, dodecylamine (DDA) was used as a collector. It was found that irrespective of the type of flotation machine and surface preparation method, there was a close correspondence between flotation recovery and the contact angle of the particles. The silanation process has known drawbacks relating to the presence of moisture during the reaction, and the stability of the silane coating after it is been prepared. Esterification does not suffer from these disadvantages. This work has shown that the esterification technique is a robust alternative method for preparing hydrophobic quartz surfaces."
