Short-hole horizontal degasification systems have been utilized in Island Creek's Virginia Division mines since 1986. These systems remove methane from the coal seam in advance of longwall mining. Without an in-seam methane drainage program, methane liberation rates from the longwall faces may exceed 0.47 cu m/s (1,000 cfrn), requiring 47 cu m/s (100,000 cfm) of air for adequate dilution capability. Optimization of the degas systems has enabled methane liberation levels and the associated ventilation requirements on the longwall faces to be reduced by 50 to 80 percent. Since the inception of the first degas system at the Virginia Pocahontas No. 6 Mine, Island Creek has developed an overall methane drainage program designed to maximize gas production and minimize ventilation requirements for methane dilution. Gas production from the degas systems is affected by four main design criteria: (1) hole location, (2) hole length and spacing, (3) collection system capacity, and (4) time available for drainage. Drilling equipment and materials for the gas collection system are selected to meet the necessary criteria while minimizing manpower requirements. Benefits gained from reducing methane liberation rates from the longwall faces are fourfold: (1) improved safety due to lower methane concentrations in the face area, (2) fewer production delays caused by excessive methane concentrations, (3) lower fan operating costs resulting from reduced air requirements, and (4) enhanced worker comfort resulting from lower air velocities and less dust generation.

The company was formed in 1926 to exploit tin bearing veins adjacent to Aberfoyle Creek in north-east Tasmania. In 1928 a 923ft tunnel was driven to explore and develop the mine 150ft below surface. This put the company on a path to become Australia's second largest tin producer by the late 1960's. Recently, Aberfoyle Resources Limited completed a 1.1km tunnel to access the major Hellyer zinc, silver, lead orebody at 300m depth. Production at 1 million tonnes a year is likely, and will make the company a significant world supplier of zinc by the late 1980's. The intervening 20 year history of survival and diversification illustrates principles of mineral exploration which proved valid in the Australian context. The objective of exploration should be to develop mines which can survive rigorous competition and downturns in commodity prices. Such mines will be based on orebodies with many of the following characteristics described by Richards (1986).

Steelmaking slag was confirmed to be a useful fertilizer for paddy growth as it efficiently supplies Ca and Si to soil water. In addition, supplement of Fe from slag fertilizer has been expected to suppress the H2S generation in paddy soil, especially for the degraded paddy soil. However, on the basis of our previous research, the Fe dissolution ability changed with slag brands, and even some brands could dissolve Fe under paddy soil pH, the supplying ability were not high. To improve Fe dissolution, we found that among various kinds of Fe-rich mineralogical phases in slag, the CaO–SiO2–FeO glassy phase showed highest water solubility of Fe. Because the CaO–SiO2–FeO glassy phase was a quenched molten phase, its dissolution behavior may depend on chemical composition, and this is important for controlling slag composition to produce fertilizer which can easily release Fe. Therefore, in this research, the CaO–SiO2–FeO glassy phase of various CaO/SiO2 ratio, Fe2+/T–Fe ratios, and FeO contents were synthesized, and the dissolution behaviors of Fe as well as other cations from these synthetic glassy phases into an aqueous solution at pH of 5 were investigated. The result showed that the dissolution ratio of Fe increased significantly by increasing Fe2+/T–Fe ratio. An increase in FeO content of glassy phase also increased the dissolution of Fe. In addition, the Fe dissolution ratio showed a local maximum with increasing CaO/SiO2 ratio.

On January 1, 1961 there were 311 petroleum refineries in the United States with a total crude-oil throughput capacity of slightly more than 10 million barrels per day, according to the Bureau of Mines' annual survey. Compared with a year ago, this represents net increases of one in the number of plants and 109 thousand barrels per day in total capacity. Contributing to this increase was the completion of two new plants, one in Hawaii and another in Michigan, during the year. At the beginning of 1961 the industry was building facilities which will increase this overall crude capacity by 36,500 barrels per day. As part of its building program, it was also replacing 329,000 barrels per day of its present capacity. Of the total 10 million barrel per day installed capacity, the industry reported 380,000 barrels per day as being shut-down on January 1, 1961. This included 11,500 barrels per day considered inoperable without extensive reconditioning.

A single aggregate mix design was developed based on a slag/Portland binder blend and crusher sand. The primary design criterion, after performance, was the fluidity of the shotcrete and concrete product to ensure compatibility with existing manufacturing and shotcrete equipment as well as the pipeline transport system Cullinan Diamond Mine was investigating. Initial work had determined an optimum slag/Portland to aggregate ratio while retaining a water to slag/Portland binder ratio of approximately 0.4 to maintain the flowability of the product. A super-plasticizer was used to further increase the flowability of the product as opposed to increasing the water content. Finally a polypropylene reinforcement fibre was included in the wet shotcrete product to improve the energy absorption characteristics of the shotcrete. Previous work on the strength development of the slag/Portland based shotcretes and concretes suggests that strength class based on the EN 206 specification is C40/50 while the toughness classification based on the EFNARC plate test is c, or greater than 1000 joules1. Typically, Cullinan Diamond Mine wanted a shotcrete with a uniaxial compressive cube strength of 45 MPa and an energy absorption, based on the EFNARC plate test, in excess of 700 joules. This is an EN 206 strength class of C36/45 requiring a uniaxial compressive core strength of 30.5 MPa and a toughness classification of b1. In addition to the shotcrete development, Cullinan Diamond Mine required concrete products with a compressive strength range of between 25 and 60 Mpa for differing construction operations underground to be manufactured from the same mix design and raw materials as for the shotcrete. Finally, Cullinan Diamond Mine carries out extensive dry shotcrete operations and an investigation into the possibility of using the single aggregate mix design for dry shotcreting was also entered into. This paper presents data that indicates that, under the terms of reference, a wet and dry shotcrete and concrete product appears to be possible from a single aggregate less than 6.7 mm in size, and that a slag/Portland binder is suitable for use as the hydraulic binder in all the products, and that the necessary performance parameters of strength and energy absorption can be achieved.

In order to provide a clear picture of the development of the sink-and-float process of concentration as applied to the iron ores of Minnesota, a few pertinent facts should be brought out concerning the ores and the products of concentration. Iron ore is primarily a cheap commodity handled in immense quantities. The price of iron ore at present, based on a natural iron content of 51.5 per cent, varies from $2.55 to $2.70 per gross ton f.0.b. cars at the mine or washing plant in Minnesota. Last year 92,000,000 gross tons were shipped from the Lake Superior district (Minnesota, Michigan, and Wisconsin) to the furnaces. Concentrated iron ores have no greater value per unit of iron content than ores that can be mined and shipped direct from the shafts or open pits. For years only the higher grades of concentrating ores could be treated and sold in competition with the immense reserves of direct shipping ore available. These higher-grade "straight wash" ores required only the simplest treatment; namely, the washing out of fine sand from coarse ore particles. As the exhaustion of the " straight wash " ore is reached, rock is found replacing part of this sand, and the ore no longer responds to the former sizing treatment. Substantial tonnages of this marginal (jig ore) remained to be treated. Because of the limitations placed on concentrates by the furnaces—namely, low price of product and minimum amount of fines—iron-ore concentration oil has been and must continue to be a one-pass process. Only an increase in price or a change in structure of concentrates allowed by the ore consumer will encourage departure from this practice. Faced with the necessity of handling large tonnages, with the limitations mentioned, iron-ore research men have found their search for new and more efficient methods of treatment seriously handicapped and removed from the field of fine crushing. Sink-and-float treatment appeared to offer the best field in coarse concentration and has been proved by several plants to be well adapted to our problem. The use of ferrosilicon as a medium solid was decided upon. In our present practice, the ferrosilicon metal, carrying about 83 per cent iron, 15 per cent silicon and 2 per cent carbon and nonmagnetics, is crushed to pass 65 mesh and used without further sizing. When mixed with water the specific gravity of the medium may be controlled to within 0.02 per cent above or below the required gravity. INTRODUCTION THE kinetics and mechanism of transfer of a constituent across a slag-metal interface are fundamentally important because many metallurgical processes involve the existence of a slag phase and a metal phase. Industrial processes seldom proceed to equilibrium, and information of the rates and modes of reactions are therefore often of greater practical importance than equilibrium data. A study of the kinetics of sulphur transfer across a slag-metal interface under reducing conditions will contribute a great deal toward a better understanding of desulphurization in the blast furnace process. The general principles existing in the transfer of a constituent, such as sulphur, across a slag-metal interface can be extended to similar transfer phenomena in other metallurgical processes. The present paper will demonstrate how such studies will lead to fruitful results from both the practical and theoretical standpoints. EXPERIMENTAL METHOD The apparatus used was simple. A graphite crucible 1 5/8-in. id, a wall 1/8-in. thick, and a depth of 4 in., was packed in an outer fused silica tube with powdered magnesia. The crucible assembly was rotated at a speed of 235 rpm inside an induction coil. A charge of 250 g of Armco ingot iron was introduced into the graphite crucible and melted by induction heating. The melt was held at a desired temperature [ ] for 3-5 min., after which 7.5 g of granular ferrous sulphide was added and the bath was held for another 3-5 min. A metal sample was then taken by means of a fused silica tube and a rubber suction bulb. Immediately after the metal sample was taken, 30 g of a prefused and crushed slag were introduced. "Caliche, a hardened sedimentary deposit of calcium carbonate that occurs worldwide, generally in arid or semiarid regions, is frequently encountered in Las Vegas, Nevada. The presence of a caliche layer in a soil profile affects the response of deep foundations to axial load. This paper studies the stiffening effect of caliche layers on the elastic settlement of a pile foundation. In order to evaluate the response in a layered soil-caliche profile, finite element analyses were performed on a typical-sized single pile and a pile group, both having constant diameter and length of the pile. The results indicate that the stiffening effect from the caliche is noteworthy, and a layer with a relative thickness of at least one pile width, regardless of its location, reduces the pile settlement for both single piles and group of piles systems by at least 50%.IntroductionThe presence of cemented materials in the soil profile influences the settlement response of foundations. One type of cemented material that can be found in arid places around the world is a sedimentary deposit of calcium carbonate called caliche. Caliche, a hardened sedimentary deposit of calcium carbonate, is common in arid and semi-arid urban areas, such as Las Vegas, Nevada (Wyman, et al. 1993).Caliche is mostly observed in lacustrine, river, and alluvial fan deposits (Jr.C.C 1970). It is also found in Central and Western Australia, the Kalahari Desert, the High Plains of the Western U.S., and the Sonoran Desert of the U.S. and Mexico.Some conditions required for the formation of caliche are that country or basement rocks must be a carbonate type, carbonate must be present in the soil zone of the area, climate regime is semi-arid to arid, there exists widespread capillary activity, and carbon dioxide (CO2) is present in the environment. As a result, caliche occurs as a product of the carbonization process (Atabey, Atabey and Kara 1998). In such areas where foundations are constructed on thin rock layers (caliche), special geotechnical design conditions should be considered, particularly if the supporting rock layer is underlain by a weaker material."

My paper presents a discussion of the legislative and departmental requirements in connection with the acquisition of exploration rights for minerals (other than petroleum and coal) in the Independant State of Papua New Guinea, the Solomon Islands and Queensland and he practical problems associated with land entry and land ownership associated therewith. In general there are many similarities in the methodology and philosophy behind the legislation in each country and the contractual requirements established thereby between the exploration company (the explorer) and the government and the mines department or equivalent in each place. There are also a number of differences. I have prepared the paper on the basis that my audience will largely consist of -experienced explorers and the paper is intended to act as a brief refresher and a guide to the philosophy and the practicalities behind the legislation and practices in ground entry in each case. I will deal in turn with New Guinea, the Solomon Islands and then Queensland.

A study has been made of the dislocation substructures produced in hot-pressed beryllium specimens strained to various levels in the range from 800 x 10-6 In. pev in. to fracture. A number of distinctive dislocation configurations were observed in this region which had not been noted at lower levels of strain. These included dislocation-dislocation interactions to form networks, dislocation "walls", subgrain boundaries and complex arrays, interactions between dislocations and large beryllium oxide particles, and the generation of dislocations from certain particles. The nature of these differences in substructure and their relation to the stress-strain characteristics of polycrystalline beryllium are discussed. In a previous study1 of the plasticity of commercial-purity, hot-pressed beryllium a transition was found in the deformation characteristics in the mi-crostrain region. The initial plastic deformation could be represented by a parabolic stress-strain equation, but above a critical stress there was a complete departure from this relation and a reduction in the strain-hardening rate. The dislocation configurations produced by various levels of micro-strain in this region were examined by transmission electron microscopy and a general correlation was established between the observed transition in deformation characteristics and the dislocation structure of the material. The two stages in the micro-strain region distinguished in these experiments were designated as Stage A' and Stage B'. Stage A' type deformation generally was noted up to a plastic strain of -80 x 10"6 in. per in. and Stage B' type from -80 x 10-6 to -800 x 10'6 in. per in. The discovery of two stages in the microstrain region naturally posed pertinent questions as to the existence of any further distinct stages in the subsequent plastic deformation. The purpose of this paper is to present a study of the dislocation configurations produced in similar beryllium specimens strained to various levels in the range from -800 x 10 in. per in. to fracture and to discuss the relation between substructure and the stress-strain characteristics. It is concluded that this region of strain can be considered as a distinct stage in the plastic deformation of polycrystalline beryllium. Tensile specimens of gage length 1 in. and cross section 0.18 by 0.06 in. were prepared from commercial-purity, hot-pressed QMV beryllium and then annealed at 1100°C for 2 hr. 2 followed by a careful chemical polishing procedure.3 The specimens were strained at a constant rate to various levels of strain in the range from -800 x 10-6 in. per in. to fracture (at 0.5 to 2 pct elongation), using the Tuckerman strain-gage technique1 to measure plastic and total strain. Thin foils were obtained from the strained and fractured specimens by chemical polishing3 and were examined using an RCA-EMU 3 electron microscope. Considerable care waS taken to avoid both accidental deformation during the preparation of the thin foils and excessive heating during their examination. Selected-area diffraction patterns were determined for each micrograph. Tilting experiments were also performed whenever appropriate to establish the dislocation zero-contrast position and hence determine the Burgers vector. This operation was sometimes not possible due to the rapid contamination of the foils which occurred in the electron microscope. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION To enable the distinctions between the dislocation arrays at high and low strain levels to be adequately made, the main characteristics of Stage A' and Stage B' deformation are briefly reviewed. 1) Stage A'. In the annealed starting condition there was a variable density (5 x 107 to 3 x 10' cm per cu cm) of isolated dislocations within a grain. The initial deformation in a tensile specimen was heterogeneous, with the dislocation density increasing in a few grains to 5 x 10g to 1.5 x 101° cm per cu cm. The deformation occurred exclusively on the basal plane by the movement of one or more 1/3 (1130) type dislocation systems. The dislocations were long and regular in form and nearly all the intersections exhibited a simple four-point node configuration. No interactions between glide dislocations and beryllium oxide particles were observed. 2) Stage B. In Stage B' there was a large increase in the number of grains exhibiting dislocation movement and also a change in the nature of the deformation, in which jogged dislocations and elongated loops became the characteristic feature. An official of one of the prominent iron companies of the South recently made the following statement during a discussion of the present conditions of the Southern iron business: " The trouble with us in the South has been that we have been satisfied to buy iron and coal lands, build blast-furnaces, and make pig-iron. We stopped at pig-iron, and as a result we are all poor. The South needs diversified industries, and needs to work up its raw products into articles the Southern market can use. If we had realized this sooner, some of us might now be rich." The South is awakening to this view, and in the Birmingham district alone one basic steel-mill is already in operation, and in a year's time another and much larger one will be turning out rails and shapes, with rod- and wire-mills in prospect. It is to chronicle another metallurgical step forward in the same district that I have prepared the following description of the new by-product retort coke-oven plant recently put in opera-

In discussing the waste upon which hinges, or is supposed to hinge, so largely the preservation of our national resources, the conclusions reached would be more reliable if actual experience were consulted, and fewer deductions were drawn from general statements, which are often the product of the imagination. It cannot be questioned that the value of by-products has .not been sufficiently appreciated by us, and that our tardiness in recovering the useful ingredients of the escaping gas of our coke-ovens is one of the most glaring instances of shortcoming in that direction. And yet even for that sin there is some palliation in the immature condition of affiliated industries. I presume that it is admitted, without argument, that, except under very exceptional conditions, all the elements cannot be recovered from most of the ores or natural products which we treat. While it is a shame that the by-products from our coke-ovens should be dissipated, Edward W. Parker's report to the U. S. Geological Survey for 19061 supplies a fairly good excuse in justification of this appalling waste. He says (pp. 773 to 774.): " What has been already commented on in previous reports about the slowness of manufacturers to change from the better known but wasteful beehive practice to the by-product recovery method of coke manufacture is particularly emphasized in the statistics presented in this chapter. For it would appear from the table following that the construction of by-product ovens had about come to a standstill, especially when the records for the preceding five years are taken into consideration. At the close of 1901, when there were only 1,165 by-product ovens completed in the United States, there were 1,533 in course of construction, 498 of which were completed during the following year. At the close of 1902, 1,346 retort ovens were building, 293 of which were added to the completed plants in 1903. At the close of 1903, 1,335 new ovens were building and 954 of these

Roadway deformation and stress migration occur with uncertainty and randomness because of geology, tunneling and mining influence. In order to study the surrounding rock deformation and failure mechanisms in three-dimensional stress state, an air return roadway of Yuanyang Lake mine of Shenhua Ningxia Coal Industry Group Co., Ltd. was chosen as a research object. The three-dimensional model was a designed and completed experiment with a dynamic-static coupling load. The model was loaded by hydraulic cylinder, simulating the in-situ rock stress field and the induced stress field of surrounding rock. The deformation monitoring system of the roadway model was constituted by optical total stations, borehole observation instruments, acoustic emission monitoring, and stress sensors. A wealth of data was obtained through an omni observation of surface displacement, characteristics of stress distribution, and deformation and failure of surrounding model material. By acoustic-optic-electric methods, a real-time testing on physical, mechanical, and damage parameters was realized through the experimental process. The results showed that the data of deformation and failure obtained from the deformation monitoring system of the roadway were authentic, which has great significance for warning and forecasting safety hazards of surrounding rock in coal mines.

The reaction COSO4(c)?CoO(c) + So3(g)was investigated from 950° to 1170OK by two different methods. The sulfate was decomposed in a previously evacuated space and Pso3 calculated from the measured total pressure on the assumption that Pso2 = 2P02. The sulfate was also decomposed under conditions of controlled oxygen pressure. The difference in the results obtained by these experimental techniques is attributed to the effects of thermal diffusion. The standard free energy change for the reaction is given by ?F° = 66,292 + 17.273T log T — 102.57 T (±300 cal/mole). It was found by DTA and X-ray diffraction studies that CoS04 undergoes a transformation at 617°± 4°C. THE metal sulfates may decompose directly to the oxide or pass through one or more intermediate basic sulfates. Provided the oxidation state of the cation does not change in the course of the reaction, the decompositions may be described in general as follows: One of the major objectives of this work was to determine the validity of Eq. [3] as much of the existing sulfate data has been calculated from decomposition pressures by Eq. [5]. The type of apparatus generally used for these measurements consists of a reaction vessel at high temperature which communicates with a manometer at room temperature. A temperature gradient is thus imposed on the gas phase causing thermal diffusion which brings about a partial separation of the different gaseous species present in an initially uniform mixture. The basic theory and experimental facts associated with this phenomenon are summarized elsewhere1 and it will suffice to state here that the heavier gaseous species diffuses down the temperature gradient. Since thermal diffusion destroys the homogeneity of the gas phase, it is not necessarily true that Pso2 = 2Po2 in any particular volume element of the gas phase even though there are twice as many molecules of SO, as of 0, in the gas phase considered as a whole. Under these conditions, the decomposing sulfate gives off SO, which dissociates to SO, and 0, and all three species are distributed throughout the system by thermal diffusion. However, the sulfate will continue to dissociate until the equilibrium value of PSo3 is established on the hot zone. Thermal diffusion may distribute SO2 and O2 throughout the gas phase in any way so long as Eq. [2b] is satisfied in the hot zone; i.e. Pso2(Po2)1/2=K3pso3. Wetherstones gold deposit is located just east of the township of Lawrence, in the Otago District of the South Island, New Zealand. The paper will describe aspects of the mining and exploration history of the Wetherstones gold field, current knowledge of the geology of the deposit, and speculate on possible outcomes of exploration in the modern era.   As at the famed Gabriels Gully situated nearby, most of the Wetherstones gold is/was contained in, or recycled into modern drainages from, the Blue Spur Conglomerate (æBSCÆ). The BSC is the basal member of a wedge of auriferous non-marine sediments of latest Cretaceous age which are tilted against the Tuapeka Fault Zone, a structure of regional dimensions. In particular mineralisation of elevated grade (which cannot yet be reliably estimated) appears to be concentrated in an elongate basement depression (ægutterÆ) of width around 100 m, variable thickness to a few metres, and axial length in excess of 500 m. The gutter plunges from the base of alluvial mining (where it has been partly exploited by underground methods) to depths of more than 100 m, beyond which it remains open and untested.   The prospects for a revival of mining at Wetherstones depend upon confirmation of what is here inferred to exist, and the discovery of additional gold. The economic prospects of the project however are enhanced by what is known or indicated of the geographic location, and anticipated geologic, mining and metallurgical characteristics of the mineralisation, and consequent anticipated environmental management issues.   The recognition of gold contained in pyrite in the BSC represents an upside to project economics which has never previously been evaluated. The Wetherstones Basin covers more than five square kilometres in areal extent. There is no modern exploration record of the majority of this area, leaving open the prospect of the discovery of additional gutters, and primary mineralisation in the underlying schist.   Australasia Gold Ltd has embarked on a program to reassess the potential resources of the Wetherstones gold mineralisation, and to evaluate the feasibility of mining.

The WIPP (Waste Isolation Pilot Plant) Project near Carlsbad, New Mexico. is a research and development project sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy, designed to demonstrate the safe disposal of radioactive waste. A mine (repository) is being developed 2150 feet below the surface in a thick salt bed, which will serve as the disposal medium. The underground ventilation system for the WIPP project was originally designed based on a fixed project scope. The design criteria and ventilation requirements were developed for the performance of various activities as then envisioned towards the achievement of this goal. However, in light of new information and actual site-specific experience at WIPP leading to a clearer definition of the scope-related programs and activities, it was realized that the existing ventilation system may need to be modified. A re-assessment of the ventilation requirements--based on the current status of the facility and a clearer definition of the scope of the experimental programs, waste storage methodology, mine developmental activities. and current equipment list--indicates a two- fold increase in underground airflows from 210,000 cubic feet per minute (cfm) to 425,000 cfm. Various options to provide the increased airflow to the underground facility were considered and analyzed. Based on the techno-economic analysis, safety and environ- mental considerations, and other conditions unique to a facility like WIPP, it was decided to construct a new shaft to serve as the primary fresh air intake, along with the installation of additional fans in parallel with the existing set up. Low cost and the ease with which the new design could be implemented and integrated into the existing ventilation system with minimum impact on current activities and projected schedules were the guiding factors in designing the shaft and related ventilation modifications.

"A colorimetric technique, originally developed for methyl iso butyl carbinol (MIBC) based on the Komarowsky reaction, has been extended to a wide range of common mineral flotation frothers. The procedure, which is briefly described, is shown suited to on-site determinations in a campaign at Kennecott Utah Copper Copperton Concentrator (Rio Tinto). Some observations are described, including: frother (MIBC) concentration evolution down a bank, frother distribution between pulp and froth phases, and loss of frother over time due to adsorption on certain minerals. A possible interference with a fuel oil addition was overcome. MIBC in recycle water was also measured.The ability to monitor frother easily will help interpret gas dispersion behaviour and should permit further optimization of flotation cell hydrodynamics and chemistry. The capability to directly measure should help optimize the type, amount and location of frother addition, and to assess frother recycled with reclaim process water.INTRODUCTIONOwing to the lack of analytical methods, the task of determining frother concentration in plant flotation circuits is not routinely performed. Industrial sites seldom outsource analyses that are both costly and inconvenient, due to the necessity of shipping freeze-dried samples to remote testing facilities. A more direct colorimetric method has recently been demonstrated for the laboratory characterization of common industrial frothers (Gélinas and Finch, 2004). The approach, based on the Komarowsky reaction (Penniman et al., 1936; Coles et al., 1942; Duke, 1947), was previously described by Parkhomovski et al. (1976) for methyl iso butyl carbinol (MIBC). The reaction involves the interaction of the OH group of a higher alcohol, concentrated sulphuric acid, and salicylaldehyde, to yield coloured solutions with intensities that can be analyzed by UV-visible spectrophotometry."

Samples of four different satellite materials were prepared by either hot isostatic pressing (HIP) of the powder or tungsten inert-gas welding of rod onto a 316 L stainless-steel substrate. The samples were subjected to a series of comparative erosion corrosion tests, and generally the Hipped samples experienced between 13 and 24 per cent less loss in mass than the equivalent welded alloys. Resistance to erosion corrosion increased with increasing carbon, chromium, and tungsten contents. Metallographic studies indicated the differences in carbide content between the different satellite materials, and the differences in morphology between the Hipped and welded samples.
