En el presente estudio se ha tomado en consideración diferentes aspectos geológicos que ayudan a determinar importantes controles estructurales que estuvieron activos en diferentes etapas de la evolución andina. El reflejo de la actividad de estas fallas se manifiesta por la presencia de controles estratigráficos, cambio brusco en la dirección de los ejes de pliegues y emplazamiento de pequeños cuerpos magmáticos, así mismo se encuentran relacionado al emplazamiento de mineralización de estaño, oro, uranio y tierras raras.

The room-temperature microhardness of as-grown and annealed MoaC single crystals was measured on the (0001), {2110), and1012) planes using Knoop and Vickevs indenters at loads ranging front 25 to 1000 g. The orientatimz dependence of hardness with respect to crystal axes was also studied. The average random hardness of as-grown crystals was determined to be 1520 kg per sq nm. Annealing to 2000°C decreased. the average hardness by 150 units. An increase in hardness after annealing at 2200 ;C was noted. Optical and electron microscopy revealed slip and twin traces on all planes studied, as produced by mi-cvohavdness indentations. Basal (0001)(2i10) slip was determined to be the primary slip system and was substantiated by electron transmission microscopy. A secondary {1010)(2110) slip was produced by mi-crohardness indentations. The lattev also produced twinning- of the {10i2)[0001] type, as proven by electron diffraction. Electrical resistivity and elastic-modulus anisotropy were found and correlated with hardness anisotropy and Mo2C crystal structure. Elastic-modulus values were obtained by microhard-uess and ullrasonic methods. Bonding mechanism of Mo2C is discussed. ROOM-TEMPERATURE microhardness indentations are useful for studying hardness anisotropy, slip, and twinning in brittle materials. Slip has previously been produced in this manner in and WS~~.~ Recently, the authors5 reported slip of the {10i0)(11~0) type produced by high pressure and microhardness indentations on hexagonal TiBz (c/a = 1.066) single and polycrystals. This slip system was also reported by French and ~homas' and Taka-hashi and ~reise~ for hexagonal WC (c/a = 0.976) crystals. These results suggest that prismatic rather than basal slip is favored in hexagonal nonmetallic materials having a c/a ratio considerably less than the ideal (1.633). Buerger precession and cylindrical X-ray rotation patterns were previously' taken on cleaved sections of the Mo2C single crystals studied in this work. Th~y were found to be hexagonal MoaC with a. = 3.0233A, co = 4.7344A, and C/O = 1.5660. The latter ratio is close to that of the beryllium metal (c/a = 1.57), which slips primarily on the (0001) plane: but also slips on the (1010) planes.'0 ~irconium" (c/u = 1.59) and titanium12 (c/o = 1.59) deform mainly by slip on nonbasal planes which contain a close-packed direction. This is due to the fact that for these two metals the initial resolved shear stress for slip on the (10i0) prismatic planes is lower than that on the (0001) plane. The prominence of basal rather than prismatic slip in metals of high c/o ratios is shown by cadmium (c/a = 1.89), zinc (c/a = 1.86), and magnesium (c/a = 1.62) which deform mainly by basal slip. However, in case of the latter, by stressing magnesium crystals in tension or compression parallel to the basal plane, slip on (10i0) planes can also be produced.13 Several hardness values for polycrystalline Mo2C are reported in the literature: Biickle ' and Samsonov'~ give a value of 1800 and 1479 kg per sq mm, respectively, at a 100-g load; and Kieffer and Benesovsk~'~ report a value of 1950 kg per sq mm at a 50-g load. ~ott'~ reports a Vickers hardness value of 2000 kg per sq mm, with the load unspecified. A Rockwell A hardness value of RA = 88 has also been reported.'' In the present work, for comparison with single-crystal Mo2C hardness values, a Khnloo value of 1600 It 150 kg per sq mm was found on 99.6 pct pure and 99 pct dense hot-pressed Mo2C. This work was undertaken partly to explain the considerable differences in hardness values reported for polycrystalline Mo2C. EXPERIMENTAL The Mo2C single crystals investigated were prepared by a Verneuil-type process using an electric arc by the Linde Co. of the Union Carbide Corp.lg The largest specimens grown were boules 7 mm in diam by 40 mm in length. The crystals had an average density of 9.04 g per cu cm, with a Mo + C content of 99.8 wt pct. The major impurities were: 100 ppm each Na, Zr, and Ca; 85 ppm 0, 55 ppm Fe, and 10 ppm each Cr and Ta. The crystals were found to be carbon-poor, the average carbon content being 5.73 wt pct (stoichiometric value is 5.89 pct). The molybdenum content was found to be 94.08 pct, which is nearly stoichiometric. Electron-microprobe traverses of selected specimens were done with a Phillips-AMR microanalyzer. Thin-film and carbon replicas were used to prepare electron micrographs. This work was done with a JEM-6A electron microscope. Prior to optical and electron-optical studies, specimens were mounted in Lucite and polished on a vibratory polisher using diamond-paste grades ranging from 9-1 p and Linde A powder for up to 48 hr. Dilute nitric acid was used for thin-section polishing and chemical etching for 1-15 min. Electrical-resistivity measurements at room temperature were taken with a Rubicon bridge, using gold contacts. For hardness measurements, a Tukon Microhardness Tester Type FB with Knoop and Vickers indenters was used. Measurements were taken at loads ranging from 25 to 1000 g; however, the 100-g load was chosen as the standard load. All measurements were taken at room temperature. For the past 45 years, the casting of refined lead ingots by The Broken Hill Asso- ciated Smelters Pty. Ltd. (B.H.A,S,) at Port Pirie has been mainly by use of manually operated rotary casting wheels of Newnam design. This style of operation was quite satisfactory as far as standard of product was concerned, but was manually intensive and a relatively high cost operation. With most other large scale lead producers already using automated-casting equipment, an investigation which commenced in 1966, progressed through stages of enquiry, design and development until the present plant commenced trial operations in late 1973, and fully operative in late 1974. While certain features of the plant are sed on overseas practices the plant was signed and built within Australia to BRAS ecifications. "The property of the Cariboo Gold Quartz Mining Company; Limited; is in the Wells-Barkerville district of Cariboo mining division. It consists of a group of 106 Crown granted mineral claims and fractions; and extends for over 6 miles along what is termed the Barkerville gold belt. The main portal and mine camp are half a mile south of Wells; which lies at the northeast end of Jack of Clubs lake and is reached by a 55-mile motor road from Quesnel; the northern terminus of the Pacific Great Eastern railway.Gold-bearing quartz veins were discovered on the surface in various parts of the property by different prospectors as far back as 1877, but the work that led to the formation of the present company was performed by Al Sanders in the year 1926. Sanders dug trenches and drove small adits on quartz veins containing gold above what is now known as the Sanders zone. Very little underground work has been done beneath the earliest known discovery-the B.C. vein. The Cariboo Gold Quartz Mining Company was formed in the autumn of 1926. In a recent technical note, Owen Thornton&apos; suggests that wetting liquid relative permeability may be derived from the relationship: where Pd/Pc is the ratio of displacement pressure to capillary pressure at the wetting liquid satdration Sw, and I is the resistivity index at this saturation. Thornton shows that this expression gives values for relative permeability in good agreement with those experimentally determined by Leverett. We have recently developed another expression for krw which seems preferable to Equation 1 since it requires fewer experimental data for its verification. This equation may be derived in the following manner. Making use of the analogy between mass transfer of fluid in a porous medium and electrical conductivity through the fluid in the same medium, we can postulate a hydraulic formation resistivity factor analogous to an electrical formation resistivity factor. From Poiseuille&apos;s Law the resistivity to flow in a tube of radius R is of the form 8u/R², where is the viscosity of the fluid. Similarly7 the resistivity to flow in a porous medium of the same dimensions as the tube is given by D&apos;Arcy&apos;s Law as where k is the permeability of the medium. The hydraulic formation resistivity factor, Ff, is thus the quotient of these two resistivities, or: But permeability is defined by the KO-zeny equation as: where: r is the average pore radius of the porous medium, L. is the average tortuous length of the average pore, + is the porosity, and L is the bed length. This gives Fr as a function of the (La/L) .-.-.tortuosity ratio and porosity, or in explicit form: where: T = (La/L)&apos;, and N is the number of pores of radius, r, which will be found in any cross sectional area, x R&apos;. Computations based on Leverett&apos;s data, quoted by Thorntaon, gives computed krw values somewhat lower than the experimental values. Moreover, other instances can be cited where we find that neither Equation 1 nor Equa tion 2 is checked by experimental data. The work of Botset&apos; on the Nichols Buff sandstone and Morse et a1 on oil wetted Bradford sandstone are such instances. A reason for these discrepancies may lie in the fact that if both Equations 1 and 2 are presumed always to give accurate values for krw, it follows that PC = Pd/Sw". Such an expression, it is well known, is too simple to describe accurately the capillary pressure behavior of all porous media. However, it is believed that a particular advantage resides on the use of Equation 2, since it is not dependent for its utility on a knowledge of the capillary pressures obtaining in dynamic flow svsterns. THE Talisman mine is situated on the Waitawheta (pronounced Wytaffetta) river just above its junction with the Chinemuri (pronounced Chinnemurre) river near Karangahake, NZ. The explored reef-bearing portion of the claim includes the angleformed by the junction of the rivers and extends southwards for slightly over a mile (See Plate V.). The country is mountainous both rivers flowing through precipitous gorges.The trig. station on Karangahake mountain is almost directly above the workings on the Bonanza section and is 1680 ft. above river level, the adit from the gorge giving 1200 ft. of backs measured vertically. The officers of the N.Z. Geological Survey are engaged in a detailed survey of the Waihi district and the rocks of Karangahake are under examination. The rocks of the district are andesites and dacites much altered and silicified. One of these exhibits a columnar structure in the mass in the Waitawheta gorge near the surface workings on Taukani hill, also on the southern bank...

The submission of carefully prepared estimates of the oil reserves of the United States calls for no apology or explanation. In this country, petroleum is a rapidly wasting asset and an occasional appraisal of the amount remaining in the ground is a simple business procedure to safeguard the general welfare and the prosperity of the republic. The rumored danger of failure, in the near future, of the foreign supply on which we depend in constantly increasing amounts makes the immcdiatc review of our available reserves the more imperative. The Director of the U. S. Geological Survey, in March, 1921, requested the American Association of Petroleum Geologists to cooperate in the preparation of new estimates of the oil remaining in the graund. With the members of this cooperative committee, state geologists, regional geologists, oonsulting specialists, and geologists and engineers attached to many companies worked both independently and through subcommittees. The reports for districts, counties, fields, etc., after review by local or state committees, were discussed by the joint cooperative committee in conferences that, in some instances, were attended by the original compilers of estimates for the states or smaller areas. Finally the data were reviewed and the figures revised by the joint cooperative committee, so that the totals given in Table 1 represent the opinion of the committee, which was composed of F. W. DeWolf, W. E. Wrather, Roswell H. Johnsont Wallace A. Pratt, Alexander W. McCoy, Carl H. Beal, C. T. Lupton, G. C. Matson, K. C. Heald, W. T. Thom, Jr., A. E. Fath, Kirtley F. Mather, R. C. Mineral commodity prices are subject to volatility over both the short and longer run – driving fluctuating operating margins for mining companies over time. Such market dynamics influence mine operating decisions depending on the interplay of company-specific and mineral market factors. The company factors include corporate financial strength and price-risk management strategy, as well as mining practices and methods at the operation level. The critical mineral market factor is the price of the ex-mine product. This results from underlying microeconomic and macroeconomic root-causes pertaining to mineral supply and demand, in addition to the activities of financial participants within commodity markets.Significant changes in commodity prices of an extended duration, either up or down, remain the principal influence upon mine economics – and therefore on mining practices too. Accurate and precise forecasting of commodity prices (and of relevant exchange rates) continues to prove elusive both to mineral economists and market analysts. Thus, at any given point in time, there are often widely differing price forecasts available for both the relevant commodity and currency. Companies as a result are unclear how to respond in practical operating terms to such price-side uncertainty – other than to manage incremental capital and operating expenditure. Typical company – and industry financier – responses to the difficulty in predicting future mineral commodity prices are to take measures to manage uncertainties in mining project revenues and costs. These operating practices are prudent – yet come at an economic cost: that is, lost revenue and margin opportunity is inevitable in any such system not easily capable of responding to price volatility in the market. The mine of the future will seek to capture this lost economic opportunity. We describe a new software product designed for the net present value optimization of multi-open-pit blended ore operations in which it is desired and/or necessary to dump some or all of the waste rock produced in the course of operations back into the voids created in the process of ore extraction. The software product simultaneously decides over the entire life-of-mine which material to mine in which year, once mined what to do with it, and where to put that material which it has decided to waste, all subject to annual blend and capacity constraints.

At Sams Creek a peralkaline granite porphyry dyke hosts gold-bearing sulfide-quartz-siderite veins. The granite dyke intrudes Ordovician-Silurian metapelite and quartzite, and has thin lamprophyre dykes along its contacts. The mineralised veins and the granite and lamprophyre dykes have been deformed during several phases of folding, the youngest of which is Early Cretaceous. The granite has been hydrothermally altered, with early magnetite-siderite¦biotite alteration overprinted by sulfide and quartz-siderite veins and quartz-perthite-albitesiderite-pyrite-rutile¦sericite alteration assemblages. The sulfide veins are composed of arsenopyrite + pyrite ¦ gold ¦ galena ¦ sphalerite ¦ chalcopyrite ¦ pyrrhotite ¦ graphite, with minor quartz and siderite. The gold contains significant silver (up to 30.8 wt per cent) and ranges in fineness from 692 to 844. Immiscible liquid-rich fluid inclusions, in quartz protected from recrystallisation by enclosing arsenopyrite, contain carbonic liquid that homogenised at temperatures of 320 - 355¦C. The Sams Creek gold deposit is distinguished from the orogenic gold deposit type by its stockwork veining, magnetite-siderite¦biotite alteration, high sulfide content, ore mineralogy and the absence of mineralisation in the metapelite country rocks. Features of the Sams Creek gold deposit do not fit neatly into existing classifications of granite-related gold-bearing deposits. The peralkaline composition of the Sams Creek granite and the absence of molybdenite and paucity of chalcopyrite, are major points of difference with gold-rich porphyry copper deposits. The presence of a lowsulf idation-state ore mineral assemblage, carbonate alteration and carbonic fluid inclusions at Sams Creek are typical of many of the reduced granitic intrusion-related type of gold deposit. However, notable differences are: the reduced type granites are metaluminous and calc-alkaline; and Sams Creek only has high As in contrast to elevated Bi, W, As, Mo, Te, and Sb in the reduced type. The Sams Creek deposit also shows affinities with gold deposits associated with alkaline magmatism, and it appears to be a new variant of this type as an As-Au deposit associated with a peralkaline granite and lamprophyre.

Provide a simple and effective means of measuring mining-induced pressure changes in coal mine roof and pillars. Approach Develop a reliable, easy to fabricate and install borehole instrument which measures mining-induced pressure changes in pillars and in the mine roof. Ground pressures are monitored through use of aluminum platens coupled with d copper flat jack. How It Works The Bureau&apos;s instrument measures mining-induced pressure changes by transmitting strata pressure through the aluminum platens to an oil-filled borehole platened flat jack (BPF). Pressure in the flat jack is displayed on a gage located outside of the borehole. The instrument is in-stalled in the borehole by inflating the flat jack using a hand-held hydraulic pump. In addition, the platens have been designed to allow up to three BPFs to be installed in a single borehole, thus permitting pressure change measurements in more than one direction from a single borehole. The reports for the years 1942 and 1943 were written in 1943 and 1944, respectively, and were summarized at the meetings of the Institute in February 1941 and February 1944, but were held in manuscript form until released for publication in 1945. 1942 During the year 1942, developments in the Peruvian oil industry continued to be subject to repercussions from the swelling war effort, which steadily diverted more of the normal supply of men and materials into war channels, and necessitated the rerouting of supply lines. The result in Peru was an increasing demand for crude oil and products. The production of petroleum in Peru in 1942 was 13,626,259 bbl., as compared with 11,935,584 bbl. in 1941—an increase of 1,690,675 bbl., or approximately 14 per cent. The largest increase, amounting to over 61 per cent, was from the Lobitos fields, but this increase was caused largely by the subnormal production in 1941. International Petroleum Company&apos;s production in the La Brea y Parinas field increased 727,111 bbl., or 7 per cent, whereas the Peruvian Government&apos;s production in the small Zorritos field declined 10,380 bbl., or approximately 20 per cent. The final production figures for the Ganso Azul field at Agua Caliente were not available for 1942 at the end of the year, but the production was believed to have increased approximately 80 per cent from 1941, or from 13,750 to approximately 25,000 barrels. Development and Exploration Exploration in Peru in 1942 was very limited and confined to areas adjacent to the older producing fields, and the efforts there were largely expended in the extension and development of the producing areas. This situation resulted partly from the shortage of transportation and drilling equipment, and also from the strong demand for increased production of oil. . International Petroleum Co. completed 69 wells during the year, including seven exploratory wells, three of which added moderate extensions to the proven areas. Sixty of the completions were oil wells and nine were dry holes. Lobitos Oilfields, at Lobitos and Restin, is understood to have concentrated its drilling effort on development rather than on exploration. The Peruvian Government operating at Zorritos confined its drilling to the development of the small producing areas previously found. During the year it announced plans to drill three exploratory wells in the Pirin area of southern Peru (see map on p. 638). It was reported that the Government had made a survey of the Sechura area (representing the southern part of the Northern National Reserve as shown on the map), but no work under this arrangement was announced. The Cia. Ganso Azul, at Agua Caliente, completed its No. 6 well as a producer on March 27, and during the year it completed the installation of a 400-bbl. topping plant.

The Westerly Storage Tunnel is a 25-foot diameter segmentally lined storage tunnel that is a major component of the Northeast Ohio Regional Sewer District's Project Clean Lake that is designed to capture 39 million gallons of untreated CSO overflows from entering Lake Erie. During the final stages of the project completion, a large-scale rock fallout incident occurred during the final lining installation operations at the down-stream end of the tunnel that extended beyond the designed primary support system. This paper outlines the level of coordination and collaboration between the Owner, Designer and Contractor to remediate the situation safely, quickly and effectively.

The paper describes a variety of existing techniques and equipment which when combined together permit faster and cheaper drilling of shafts in soft to medium strength formations. Drilling fluid circulation, methods of hole stabilisation and bit design, including the advantages of flat bottomed and conical bits, shrouds and skirts, tungsten carbide, long tooth and disc cutters are considered. The principles of rock chip transportation and bottom hole cleaning are described together with a new and very efficient fluid circulation system which was invented by the author.

The kinetics of dissolution of nickel matte in the presence of manganese dioxide with silver ions was investigated. The catalytic silver ions enchanced the leaching rate up to a factor of 17. The effects of stirring, temperature, particle size, concentrations of Mn02, silver and ferric ions, and the experimental procedures were studied. Solid residues at various levels of nickel extraction were examined by SEM, TEM, electron micoprobe and X-ray diffraction. These results indicated that the dissolution reaction was topochemical and fits a surface reaction control model. The activation energy was calculated to be 39.15 KJ/mol. The leaching rate of Ni3S2 was independent with stirring rate, but the reaction rate constant was inversely proportional to the initial particle diameter. The order of the reaction rate are 0.41, 0.69, 0.33 with respect to Ag+, Mn4+ and Fe&apos;+ con-centration respectively. Thus a kinetic rate equation was developed. In this paper, the technology of producing fluxed pellets by using hydrated lime as binder instead of bentonite was carried out. Green balls with 0.8% bentonite and others with 2% hydrated lime were obtained under the same conditions of 1.5% coke, 1.45 basicity and balling at 8.5% moisture for 13 min in disc pelletizer. The properties of two types green balls were as follows: drop numbers of 4.8 to 5.0 times/0.5m, compressive strength of 19.7 to 24.2 N/pellet and thermal shock temperature of 280 to 385?, respectively. Comparing with bentonite as binder, the compressive strength of fired pellets with hydrated lime is elevated by 13.8% and climbs up to 3113 N/pellet under the following conditions: preheating at 1050? for 10 min and firing at 1300? for 15 min. The hydrated lime also improves the metallurgical performance of fired pellets. The reduction index was enhanced from 68.6% to 70.6%, RDI+3.15 increased from 90.1% to 98.8% and reduction swelling index dropped from 22.4% to 7.4%, respectively. Therefore, hydrated lime can not only replace bentonite as binder to enhance the firing behaviors of green balls, but also effectively improve the metallurgical performance of fluxed pellets which can be used as high quality feed for blast furnace.

Expansion of the Plum Island Wastewater Treatment Plant requires interconnection of three operating pump stations using only two existing 10-ft diameter shafts for access. These two existing shafts require additional support to allow access 130 feet below grade. Interconnection requires rehabilitation of an existing tunnel, excavation of two new tunnels, and abandonment of additional existing tunnels. Construction has discovered unexpected conditions at all three connection points. The CMAR contracting method has effectively accommodated project team discussion, value engineering decisions, and allocation of risk during preconstruction and construction phase services.

The possibility of deeper production in the Buena Vista Hills was first considered in 1933. At that time, however, the heavy state curtailment program served to deter any operator from drilling test wells, which, if successful, might upset the proration schedules. Because most of the acreage was held by several major operators and the remainder by substantial independents, the adoption of a plan of cooperative development was considered desirable. Such a plan was formulated for the development of any deeper oil and gas horizons that may be found to exist. This plan, which was signed by the Secretaries of the Navy and of the Interior on behalf of the United States on July 9,1936, is now effective for the development of lands within the area shown on Fig. 1. Unlike most unit plans, the present cooperative development plan permits each operator to drill and produce his own wells. For the purpose of this plan the Buena Vista Hills field is divided into two pools. The present production is classed as the " old pool,"&apos; while any future production below a certain marker which roughly coincides with the bottom of the Santa Margarita formation is included in the "pool" to which the provisions particularly apply. Naval Petroleum Reserve No. 2 lies within the area and constitutes the major portion of the Federal leases subject to the plan. There are 39,040 acres and 27 operators within the area. Twenty-six operators controlling 99.5 per cent of the acreage have signed the agreement. Geology oF the Buena Vista Hills The Buena Vista Hills consist of a low range in the southern portion of the San Joaquin Valley, and are roughly parallel to the adjacent Temblor range to the south.
