It has been known for sometime that in an ionic lattice, such as that of Ag,S or FeO, the migration velocity of the anion may differ markedly from that of the cation, the cation being usually the more mobile. It has been shown, for example, that during the formation of silver sulphide tarnish on silver, the tarnish layer grows principally by the motion of silver cations through an essentially stationary silver sulphide lattice. Similarly, the growth of wüstite scale on iron proceeds principally by motion of iron ions, this being accomplished with the aid of vacant iron lattice sites into which the iron may readily move. Likewise investigations of solid solutions of various salts show that there is usually considerable difference in the mobility of the different cations. Measurements of the mobility of various metals in liquid mercury indicate that the various metals move at different rates relative to the mercury. In view of the foregoing it seems reasonable to suppose that when any single phase solution is acted upon by a field, the atoms of different elements respond in different ways; in particular, that the force arising from a particular concentration gradient in a binary alloy would cause the atoms of one component to move with a drift velocity which is in general different from that of the atoms of the other component. The recent experiments of Smigelskas and Kirkendall' support this viewpoint, since they found, in essence, that during diffusion in alpha brass zinc moves appreciably faster than copper. This was evidenced by the relative motion of inert molybdenum wires. Such a phenomenon is incompatible with the place interchange theory of diffdsion proposed by several authors, most recently by Bir-chenall and Mehl.2 This theory has, however, also been questioned3v4 for other reasons, principally because of the high energy required for direct atomic interchange. The rather large difference between self-diffusivity, as determined by tracer technique, and mutual diffusivity, as determined with the aid of another element at low concentration, might also be interpreted as favoring the above idea; however. Birchenall and Mehl have pointed out that there is another possible interpretation of this difference; this is discussed later. A rather interesting and pertinent observation was made by Schwartz, who noticed that tungsten lamp filaments, heated by direct current, commonly fail by necking down in the region at the temperature gradient near the positive end, with a concomitant swelling at the corresponding position near the negative end. He introduces considerable auxiliary evidence to show that this phenomenon is occasioned by the motion of tungsten cations which migrate in the high temperature region from the positive end toward the negative end. The mechanism of this migration is not clearly understood. If, however, this experimental evidence be accepted, we are forced to conclude that alloying elements in the tungsten may migrate by the same or a Similar mechanism, whatever it may be, at a greater Or lesser rate, thus giving rise

SOME notes on the works of the Electrolytic Refining and Smelting Company of Australia will no doubt be of interest to members of the Institute, more especially as much of the work is new to Australasia. As many of the members who may read this paper have not been in a position to visit works of this kind, and are consequently not thoroughly acquainted with all the operations carried on, the author has taken the liberty, in some cases, to enter into explanation which would otherwise be unnecessary. The works are situated at Port Kembla (New South Wales), about fifty miles south of Sydney, and are approachable both by rail and water. The Government has recently built a low-level jetty upwards of five hundred feet long, and intends installing at an early date an electrically operated portable crane to facilitate the handling of material to and from the boats. This will mean: a considerable reduction in the length of time that boats are laid up at the jetty. There are also under construction two breakwaters, which, when complete, will materially assist shipping operation...

The Bureau of Mines has developed a continuous ultrasonic flotation cell for the recovery of Florida phosphate ore. Within a small mixing chamber near the bottom of the flotation cell, an ultrasonic probe agitates an injected mixture of air, water, and phosphate ore and breaks the air into fine bubbles. Phosphate particles are preferentially attached to these fine bubbles and floated in the main chamber of the flotation cell. Over 94 pct of the phosphate was recovered, resulting in a 30 pct P205 concentrate. The ultrasonic energy consumption was less than 7 kW.h/mt of phosphate ore.

The Boliden AITIK copper mine is located 100 kilometres north of the Arctic Circle in northern Sweden. A pre-feasibility study was conducted in 2005 with the aim of increasing the capacity of the existing processing plant. After analysis, options to upgrade the existing plant were abandoned in favour of building a new processing plant, with higher capacity and therefore greater profitability. A new plant could be designed with greater flexibility to make potential future expansions easier. A feasibility study for a new 36 Mt/y processing plant including fully AG grinding circuits and flotation was completed in 2006. The project was approved by the Boliden board shortly thereafter. Construction started in the beginning of 2007 and was completed during 2009. Commissioning of the new plant was undertaken in the first half of 2010. The grinding circuit consists of two lines with each line consisting of a 22.5 MW AG mill and a 10 MW Pebble mill in closed circuit with a spiral classifier. The nominal production level is 2 200 t/h for each grinding line. This paper presents the start-up and operation of the grinding circuit.

The year 2019 marks the 70th anniversary of Flash Smelting. The technology was operated on industrial scale for the first time at the Outokumpu Harjavalta copper smelter in Finland in 1949. Since then Flash Smelting technology, now owned and developed by Outotec Oyj and the first plant, now owned by Boliden Harjavalta Oy, have been evolving throughout history by optimizing the process for various feeds and raw-materials, as well as through developing the equipment and operating practices. Even though sustainability was not a popular theme during the first days of Flash Smelting, it has still been the key principle in guiding the development. This is well proven by the wide adoption of Flash Smelting for the processing of copper and nickel concentrates, mostly due to its ability to fulfil the economic and resource efficiency criteria demanded by its operators. This paper describes the history and improvements of the Outotec® Flash Smelting process by looking into the early days of operation and how the development of the process and equipment has taken place over time as a joint effort between the technology provider and the users of the technology. INTRODUCTION In the 1940s, Outokumpu Oy refined the concentrate produced in the Outokumpu mine into metallic copper initially in Imatra, and later from 1945 to 1949 in Harjavalta, based on the most modern electrical melting process of the world at that time. After the war, Finland lost a significant part of its hydropower production, and due to the increasing use of electricity, the availability of electricity weakened, and the price rose. To maintain Outokumpu's profitability, it was forced to look for a melting solution that was not based on electricity.

Image analysis is more and more considered as a powerful tool for quantitative analysis of ores and concentrates. Apart from being very much dependent upon the quality of the imaging principle and the adequacy of the imaging sensor, quantitative image analysis is also the result of a long chain of material, image and pixel sampling strategies. The most reliable way to demonstrate the accuracy and the precision of modal analysis obtained from images is probably to use a blended material with known proportions of pure minerals and confront the results obtained from different analytical tools. This operation has been performed on a series of mineral blends mimicking the tailings of a flotation operation in a plant operating on massive sulfide mineralisation. The intention was to be able to better predict acid mine drainage potential from direct mineralogical observations. Selected sulfide minerals: pyrite (Py), pyrrhotite (Po), chalcopyrite (Cp) and sphalerite (Sp) were mixed as variable amounts within gangue minerals (quartz, calcite, dolomite and siderite). Typical blends contained six to ten per cent (Py); one to three per cent (Po); 0.5 to one per cent (Cp, Sp); 15 to 40 per cent carbonates and 40 to 75 per cent quartz by mass. The 1000 gram blends were carefully sampled and prepared for X-ray diffraction, chemical analysis by ICP-AES and optical microscopy image analysis (OMIA). Results obtained for the different analytical techniques are compared and discussed revealing the limits and strength of each method in the accurate quantification of sulfide and gangue minerals.

Recently, the mining community has begun to move toward a more prominent place in the structure of American society. Extensive press coverage of our energy problems during the past year or two has led to an increasing awareness on the part of the public of the vital role that mining must play if today's standard of living is to be maintained. It appears that mining may be emerging from a status generally characterized in the public mind as an esoteric, dirty, man-killing, land- scape-despoiling endeavor, to a new stature that may eventually become as respectable as agriculture. To be sure, we are still being criticized, as has been the lot of miners since the time of Agricola. In fact, the clamor has never been louder. Nevertheless, the public, in increasing numbers, is beginning to know it needs us. But we cannot be complacent. Our improving stature brings along with it increasing responsibility. The mineral industry will be expected to produce mineral raw materials and fuels in ever larger amounts and sell them at reasonable prices, in the face of rising labor costs, decreasing labor availability, chacging labor attitudes, increasingly stringent environmental regulation, stricter health and safety standards, and a deteriorating geo-political climate.

Introduction The separation of minerals from complex sulfide ores by flotation requires careful control of the surface chemical behaviors of the minerals constituting the ores. When the minerals in the ore are finely disseminated, extremely fine grinding is needed to liberate the minerals. Fine grinding is not only an energy-intensive operation, but also influences the flotation behaviors of liberated minerals. Steel balls are commonly used for grinding. Galvanic interactions occur not only between sulfide minerals and grinding media but also among the different sulfide minerals themselves. The electrochemical characteristics of chalcopyrite and pyrrhotite when they are independently coupled with steel grinding media and the relevance of these characteristics to the flotation behavior of these minerals have been exten¬sively studied (Cheng and Iwasaki, 1992: Li and Iwasaki, 1992). These studies dealt with reactions in two electrode combinations, simulating mineral-grinding medium and mineral-mineral interactions. In practice, however, it is more common to involve more than one sulfide mineral. In a study of a pyrite-pyrrhotite-mild steel system, Pozzo et al. (1989) provided evidence that a mineral having an intermediate potential could behave differently, depending on the condi¬tion of galvanic contact. This investigation was undertaken to study a chalcopyrite-pyrrhotite-mild steel system to gain better in¬sight into the mechanism of multiple galvanic interactions. A three-electrode system was chosen to simulate a typical copper sulfide ore. The sulfide minerals were represented by chalcopyrite and pyrrhotite. The grinding medium was rep¬resented by mild steel. The nature of galvanic interactions involving these minerals and grinding medium in an oxygen atmosphere was investigated in a three-electrode combina¬tion, and an attempt was made to relate the laboratory flotation results of pyrrhotite-chalcopyrite ores. Possible implications to the differential flotation of complex sulfide ores are discussed. Key words: Electrochemistry, Flotation, Sulfide ores Experimental The pyrrhotite (57.74% Fe, 0.09% Cu, 4.84% Ni and 36.54% S) sample was obtained from Falconbridge Ltd.'s Strathcona mine, Ontario, Canada, and the chalcopyrite (26.00% Cu, 28.57% Fe, 0.05% Ni and 31.52% S) sample came from Transvaal, South Africa. Mild steel (AISI 1020, 0.2% C) was chosen to represent grinding media. A conventional three-electrode cell was used in the elec¬trochemical measurements. The working, counter and refer¬ence electrodes were, respectively, sulfide minerals or mild steel, graphite rod and saturated calomel electrode (SCE, 0.245 V vs. standard hydrogen electrode). The exposed areas of the sulfide minerals and grinding medium electrodes were approximately the same (0.17 to 0.19 cm2). The preparation methods of working electrodes, the reagents used, the experi¬mental procedures and the instrumentation were the same as those described previously (Cheng and Iwasaki, 1992). Rest potentials of pyrrhotite, chalcopyrite and mild steel were measured individually in 0.05-M sodium sulfate solu¬tions. Combination potentials and galvanic currents of the sulfide minerals and grinding medium were measured in short-circuited two- and three-electrode systems. All poten¬tials in this study are quoted in volts with respect to the standard hydrogen electrode (SHE). JOULE-THOMSON coefficients for two natural gases were determined at pressures up to 600 lb. per sq. in. throughout the temperature interval between 70° and 310°F. From these primary data and available information relating to the isobaric heat capacities of the components at infinite volume, the heat capacities of these gases were computed throughout the above-mentioned range of pressures and temperatures. The enthalpies of the gases were computed as a function of state and the results compared with values obtained by several methods of prediction currently available. The results are presented in graphical and tabular form.

"The use of shotcrete is a mandatory means for rock support and therefore for safety in many underground mining operations. If shotcrete gets into the flotation feed though, it can negatively influence the flotation process. This especially occurs when sublevel stoping, cut-and-fill or room-and-pillar methods are applied because as the mining face moves on, formerly applied shotcrete layers are mined together with the ore.As shotcrete does not differ significantly from fluorspar ore in its physical properties it gets moved through the comminution process and is fed to the flotation plant like the ore. To prove the influence of shotcrete on the flotation process, a laboratory test series was conducted at the Unit of Mineral Processing (AMR) of the RWTH Aachen University. The shotcrete grade of the flotation feed was varied between 0 and 10% through addition of pure shotcrete. Flotation parameters and also reagent dosage were held constant apart from the addition of the pH regulator, which was dosed to reach a constant pH of 8 at the flotation start. Results showed that with increasing shotcrete grades in the flotation feed the fluorspar recovery as well as general mass recovery decreased. The enrichment factor of Fluorspar also decreased with increasing shotcrete grades in the feed.In an effort to eliminate the shotcrete contamination of the flotation feed, a feasibility study for use of sensor-based sorting prior to the comminution process was conducted. Rock sorting not only reduces the bad influence of shotcrete on the flotation process, but also reduces comminution costs. INTRODUCTIONShotcrete is used in underground mining on a regular basis. It is used for rock support and therefore to increase safety in the underground mining environment. In mineral processing the presence of shotcrete can cause difficulties for example in the concentration processes. In flotation the highly sensitive reagent mixtures can be disturbed by the chemical activity of shotcrete and therefore recovery rates and selectivity of the process can suffer.Shotcrete is a special form of concrete which is applied pneumatically with high velocities and is compressed by its impact energy. Since the process is especially suitable for work in difficult environments and overhead areas, it is established in underground mining for many years. Shotcrete is not only applied in pre-processing of the mines, but particularly of use for cut and fill, as well as room and pillar mining methods. There it is used to secure excavation chambers. When the mine face is secured with shotcrete and subsequently the mining continues, the applied shotcrete will automatically be mixed with the ore."

A study of the swelling behaviour of a single batch of high-grade iron ore pellets during hydrogen reduction in a fixed bed showed that the extent of swelling is governed by the nucleation and growth of crystalline iron protuberances from the wüstite grains. Over the reduction temperature range 650 to 1000°C, it was found that substantial degrees of swelling can occur at temperatures in excess of 850°C, and significant variations in the swelling behaviour of individual pellets from different bed levels are observed under these conditions.The results are discussed in terms of a recent swelling theory and shown to be in general agreement.

Single crystal nickel-base superalloys such as PWA1484 exhibit superior performance compared to conventional superalloys, and are used extensively in turbine blade applications requiring good high temperature properties. The life of these blades is typically limited by cracks and erosion. Due to the high cost of these blades, welding techniques are being considered to weld/repair worn components, extending their useful lives and delaying the need for expensive replacement components. However, the sensitivities for solidification cracking and post weld heat treatment cracking are relatively high in these alloys. Electron beam (EB) welding can deliver concentrated heat sources and has the potential to address these issues. Numerous welding trials and structural tests must be conducted to identify the optimum method and welding parameters. Weldability is studied over a range of material conditions, welding parameters, and directions. The influence of welding parameters on the fusion zone microstructure and resultant weldability is investigated using combination of microscopic examination and micro-hardness testing. This paper summarizes some of the results of a feasibility study conducted to understand the effects of welding parameters on localized microstructural features, cracking sensitivity, and mechanical properties of autogenously EB welded coupons of single crystal PWA1484.

The Bureau of Mines and Kaiser Steel Corp. are cooperatively demonstrating the shield-type roof support in the longwall mining of a 10-1/2-foot-thick coalbed at the York Canyon mine near Raton, N. Mex. As part of the demonstration, the shield supports have been successfully and safely moved from a completed longwall face to a new longwall face. When these shield supports were moved in 1976 they were the largest and heaviest longwall support system in use in U.S. coal mines. The shield supports, preparations for moving them, the actual move, and installation at the new face are discussed.

Significant investigation into the problem was done by Crandell, Langefors, et al, Edwards and Northwood, and again by the Bureau of Mines. This resulted in an effective Safe Limit standard expressed in particle velocity as 2.0 inches per second.

Smelting of copper concentrate generates a significant amount of dusts which are collected in electrostatic precipitators. This material, which is a complex oxide of Cu, Fe, S, As, Sb, Bi and others, is difficult to recirculate into the smelting process due to the reported high concentration of arsenic. However, the dust also has concentration of copper above 10wt %, aside from reported contents of silver corresponding as much as 25wt% of the total inventories of this element in the smelters. Thus, it is of economic and environmental interest the development of a process able to reduce the concentration of arsenic in the dust and produce a material suitable to be recirculated into the smelting process. The present experimental work shows the results of a process of dust sulfidization-oxidition able to remove more than 65wt% of the arsenic present. INTRODUCTION Copper sulfide deposits worldwide exhibit increasing concentrations of arsenic. One case of interest would be the copper ores from the northern zone of Chile, which report high concentrations of enargite (Cu3AsS4) (Revista química, 2015) (Latinominería, 2014). The obtained concentrate from this ore is treated in a Fluidized Bed Roaster, producing calcines with low concentration of arsenic (<0.5 wt% As). This material is suitable to be treated in a Flash Furnace. At the roasting process, the arsenic is volatilized and then precipitated as fine particles of complex oxides. Most of this particulate material is removed from the gas stream through a device called Electrostatic Precipitator (Minería chilena, 2014). The experimental results reported in the literature indicate that arsenic present in these particulate materials (or dusts) cannot be eliminated in oxidizing atmospheres (air) or with inert gases (N2) in a Fluidized Bed Roaster even at temperatures as high as 700°C. There is also information that even the recovery of valuable metals from the dust is difficult through hydrometallurgical processes (private communication). This is how in some foundries these dusts are considered environmental liabilities. Advantages and disadvantages of utilizing this method are also discussed.IntroductionWith the introduction of diesel-powered mining equipment in the 1960s there arose several question s for the environmental engineer to consider. These included: 1. What are the constituents of diesel exhaust and how can they be detected and evaluated?2. What are the toxicities and long-term health effects of these constituents?3. What is the ventilating volume required to maintain the concentration of these constituents below toxic levels?Diesel engines are a class of reciprocating, internal combustion engines in which relatively high compression ratios are used to generate high air-charge temperatures, which cause ignition of fuel to occur spontaneously. Ideally, perfect combustion of the fuel would produce an exhaust consisting solely of nitrogen (N2), water (H2O), carbon dioxide (CO2) and oxygen (O2). However, because no combustion process is perfect, relatively small quantities of imperfect-combustion products, or pollutants, are also generated. These include hydrocarbons (HC), carbon monoxide (CO), nitric oxide (NO), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), carbon (C) or soot, and sulphur dioxide (SO2).Currently, the Regulations for Mines and Mining Plants, made under the Occupational Health and Safety Act (Section 176), stipulate that weekly tests shall be made to determine the carbon monoxide (CO) concentration in the undiluted exhaust and at the operator&apos;s position, and the nitrogent dioxide (NO2) concentration at the operator&apos;s position. Also, the aldehyde (as HCHO) concentration in the atmosphere, at the operator&apos;s position, is to be measured at least every three months. Threshold limit values (TLVs) have been established for each of the three combustion products, and each is regarded as a separate entity. Consequently, this does not allow for consideration of interactions and possible synergistic effects between the various exhaust components."

Rapid access longwall mining&apos; or &apos;longwail punch mining&apos; is a proposed extraction method whereby longwall gate roads are driven into a seam directly from an opencut highwall. The longwall panel thus formed is retreated back to within 40 m of the highwall providing an extremely simple, reliable and therefore highly productive longwall mining system. The concept is of particular benefit for the recovery of isolated pockets of coal (adjacent to a highwall) not easily accessible from a conventional underground mine. As panel gate roads are driven directly from the open strip, minimal delays are incurred between the end of open cut and start of underground production, allowing the method to bridge the gap between open cut mining and a total underground commitment. The study was specific to the Bowen Basin, and given the likely conditions, no significant operational or geotechnical hinderances to the concept could be identified. It was therefore concluded that longwall punch mining would not expose the operator to any additional risks above that normally associated with the introduction of longwall mining. Thus, longwall punch mining is an attractive option, both operationally and financially, for open cut mines reaching their maximum economic Death.
