With either sulfonate or oleate as collector, quartz responds to flotation with moderate additions of calcium only at moderately high pH, where some portion of the activator has hydrolyzed to caOH+ . Calculations of the concentrations of various ionic and precipitated species of calcium and collectors suggest that the products of [(CaOH+) (RSO3)] and [(CaOH+)(01-)] determine whether flotation is obtained under specific conditions. Ion products on the order of 10-12 were calculated for both the sulfonate and oleate systems. The activating effect of calcium ion in nonmetallic flotation systems is of considerable interest because of the normal presence of calcium in natural water. As a result, this phenomenon has received quite some attention in the past. Kraeber and Boppel1 showed that quartz could be activated by calcium above pH 10 with sulfonate as collector. The feasibility of selectively separating quartz from hematite with calcium activation at relatively high pH was demonstrated by Clemmer, Clemmons, Rampacek, Williams, and stacy.2 Cooke and Digre3 showed with a bubble pick-up method that the minimum quantity of calcium ion required as activator for complete pick-up of particles occurs at pH 11.5 for an addition of 20 mg per liter sodium oleate. They also showed that larger additions of calcium (10-fold increase per unit decrease of pH) must be added for complete bubble pick-up as the pH is reduced. Schuhmann and Prakash,4 using a vacuum flotation technique, found that quartz could be floated with moderate additions of calcium chloride and oleic acid at neutral pH, providing the metal ion was present in stoichiometric excess over the quantity needed to form the normal soap with oleic acid. They also reported that calcium will function as an activator only in basic media. More recently, Eigeles and volova5 have shown that essentially complete flotation of quartz is obtained with 6 x 10-4 mole per liter calcium chloride and 1.7 x 10-5 mole per liter sodium oleate at pH 11.6. while no flotation is obtained at about pH 10.9 and below. The importance of adsorption of activator and collector at the air-liquid interface is also demonstrated in these systems. The important role that metal ion hydrolysis assumes in quartz activation systems was also demonstrated recently.6-8 A detailed investigation of metal activation in sulfonate flotation of quartz was undertaken in one system7 and yielded a number of interesting and important observations. Quantification of the data of this system7 to the extent desired was not possible, though, because certain species could neither be ignored nor accounted for accurately. These difficulties can be circumvented when calcium is involved as activator. This detailed analysis was undertaken to obtain a more quantitative explanation of calcium and metal ion activation in quartz flotation. EXPERIMENTAL MATERIALS AND METHODS Sodium alkyl aryl sulfonate9 mol wt 450, and pure potassium oleate were used as collectors. All other reagents used were reagent grade in quality, i.e., n-amyl alcohol as frother, KOH for pH adjustment, and calcium chloride. Conductivity water, made by passing distilled water through an ion exchange column, was used in the investigation. Quartz was prepared by leaching the sized sample (48 x 150 mesh) with HC1 until no iron could be detected in the leach liquor. The experimental equipment and procedure were the same as that described previously.6,10 EXPERIMENTAL RESULTS As the presence of precipitates was noted in all of the systems to which ca++ and collector were added, experiments were undertaken to determine the solubility products of calcium sulfonate and calcium oleate using a nephelometer. With this technique, collector is titrated into a known solution, which in this case was 5 x 10-5 mole per liter CaCl2 at pH 5.5. The steel industry of the United States has depended in the past almost wholly upon imports for its supplies of manganese. Many of the important domestic sources yield ores leaner in their natural condition than the foreign ores the steel industry. has been accustomed to use. To make them available, therefore, either the ores must be concentrated or the practice of the steel industry modified. Roughly 25,000 T. annually of high-grade manganese ores are used for dry batteries for chemical purpose, and in other ways; while approximately 750,000 T. are required for making steel. , By present practice, every ton of steel takes an average of about 14 lb. (1.8 kg.) of metallic manganese. This is generally added to the steel in the form of an alloy, the standard alloys being the 80-per cent. ferro-manganese and the 20-per cent. spiegeleisen, During the year 1917, 286,000 T. of ferromanganese and 193,291 T. of spiegeleisen were made in this country, the former largely from imported ores; and 45,381 T. of ferromanganese. was imported. The metallic manganese represented by these alloys was 304,000 T., the product of roughly 800,000 T. of high-grade ore and 345,000 T. of low-grade ore. Manganese Deposits in the United States Before the war manganese ore was mined in relatively small quantities in the Appalachian region, including Virginia, Tennessee and Georgia, and in Arkansas, but owing to the increase in prices during the past three years manganese mining has been undertaken also in Montana, California, Arizona, New Mexico, Nevada, Utah, and Minnesota. From data now available it appears that in this country deposits of high-grade manganese ores are usually small, while materials lower in manganese and higher in iron occur in appreciable quantities. Although this is going to appear in the December Issue of &E, it is being written long before the end of the year. December, of course, is the time for a summing up of the year's activities. Perhaps, the best way to begin is to report on what went on at the SME Board of Directors Meeting in St. Louis on October 20. This won't be a chronological report, and I shall take time to comment on some of the items we cover as we go along. You should be encouraged to know that your Directors take their duties seriously. Of the 21 current Directors, 19 were present, and three of the new 1971 Directors came to observe what goes on at an SME Board Meeting.

Bench top centrifuge is used to study the consolidation behavior of phosphatic clays. A mathematical model (based on first order kinetics) is developed to describe the relationship between the void ratio (at any time) and the effective stress. Permeability of the sediment as a function of the void ratio is also described. The obtained data are compared with that obtained by other consolidation testing methods. Centrifuge results indicate that consolidation data may be developed in a short period of time (hours) as compared to days or weeks when other techniques are used.

Low-temperature heat capacities and high-temperature enthalpies were determined calorimetrically for Na2Cr04, A reversible transition was found at 700° K with an isothermal heat of transition of 2,263 cal/mole. High-temperature X-ray diffraction analysis showed that the transition was a crystal change from the low-temperature orthorhombic form to the high-temperature hexagonal form. At 795° K the hexagonal form had the parameters a, = 5.691 and co = 7.478 A. Powder diffraction data for the high-temperature form are given and possible structures discussed. The melting point was determined to be 1,065° K with a heat of fusion of 5,810 cal/mole. Enthalpy and entropy increments from this investigation were combined with other data from the literature to calculate enthalpies of formation, free energies of formation, and equilibrium constants of formation from 298° to 1,400° K. Equations that represent enthalpies above 298° K are given.

S. potash producer-whether in New Mexico, California, or Utah--once simply took from the ground a mixture of sodium chloride and potassium chloride, crushed it to a maximum of 10 mesh, and separated the two salts by physical methods. He piled the sodium chloride on the desert and sold the potassium chloride to fertilizer mixing companies. Seven companies in the Carlsbad basin of New Mexico now use at least three basic processes for making the separation and at least three more processes have been or are under investigation. Both here and in Australia, the unique commercial and tax features of joint venture are finding favour in forestry, fishing, technology and infrastructure projects. For New Zealand mining companies, joint ventures provide a means of access to foreign know how and investment funds, while retaining their corporate independence and their hard-earned tax losses.   This paper discusses some of the practical income tax and GST considerations where a joint venture structure is contemplated. The first part of the paper considers income tax, and in particular how joint ventures enable companies to access and carry forward tax losses. It explains why a joint venture may be advantageous relative to a jointly owned company.   The second part of the paper concerns GST and the focus is on two aspects: 1.   Joint ventures may be registered for GST. In some instances they have no choice and are required to do so. Where a joint venture is registered in respect of a taxable activity, the members are not permitted to register in respect of the same activity. This may be problem where the member has incurred its own expenses and the member wishes to register in its own right to claim back the GST on those expenses. This paper explores the issue and possible solutions. 2.   It is not uncommon to see joint ventures claiming GST on the costs of production, and the production being sold (and GST is being charged) by the members. In this paper we consider whether these arrangements have a tax risk, and what can be done to make them technically sound.

The load test program for the pile foundation at Soldier Field included static and dynamic load tests at four locations around the site. The dynamic tests were run with no knowledge of the static results, and comparison between the two is very good. It was necessary to use a special testing hammer (not the production hammer) to demonstrate capacity with dynamic testing. Over 90% of the piles were HP14x89 with a design load of 230 tons (18 ksi). The load tests showed a capacity in excess of 590 tons for all tests where sufficient set up time was allowed. The remainder of the piles were mostly HP 12x53 with a design load of 100 tons (13 ksi). The measured capacity of these piles was typically about 250 tons. One experimental HP12×74 pile with a nominal yield of 65 ksi held 730 tons (67 ksi) before failing.

Although alloys of copper and silicon were examined several years ago,' and their excellent mechanical properties were shown, it was not until C. B. Jacobs 2 introduced manganese in small quantities to the alloys that they became of commercial importance. A few years ago The American Brass Company took over the patents and commenced to manufacture the alloy under the name "Everdur." The present study of the constitution of the ternary system was undertaken in order to reach a fuller understanding of the behavior of the alloy. Review of Previous WORK on the BinaRy Systems There have been no papers published dealing with the constitution of the ternary system, although some tests of the mechanical properties have been described," which indicate that there is a change in solubility with temperature. Copper-silicon System The copper-silicon system has been studied in detail by the author and is described in two papers published in 1928.V he portion of the diagram up to 8 per cent. silicon, as determined by this research, is reproduced in Fig. 1. Operating mines in Wyoming and Montana, which are generally characterized by shallow overburden and thick coal seams, are faced with reclamation problems which are unique to this area. Unlike the eastern or midwestern mines, removal of thick coal seams and lack of sufficient overburden creates overburden deficiencies that require careful evaluation prior to mining to insure compliance with regulatory requirements. Computer models and computer graphics can assist in such evaluation where appropriate alternatives can be selected which satisfies both the regulatory requirements and minimizes cost. This paper presents one such model used in evaluation of backfill requirements for restoration of surface and ground water regimes, restoration of mined-out areas to the approximate original contour, and the blending of the mined-out areas to the surrounding topography.

"Tin ore from the southeast of Yunnan in China is a complex polymetallic low-grade ore. Because of the highly disseminated extent ore, cassiterite flotation was applied in industrial production instead of the low efficient gravitational separation. Benzohydroxamic acid (BHA) was widely used as a collector in cassiterite flotation, but the consumption of BHA was large. In this study, the influence of octanol in cassiterite flotation from the southeast of Yunnan using BHA as the collector was investigated. The results indicated that single octanol showed almost no flotation capability to cassiterite without BHA. However a small amount addition of octanol as the auxiliary collector can decrease the consumption of BHA significantly, while did not reduced the recovery of cassiterite obviously. Infrared spectra analysis indicated that the single octanol adsorbed on the surface of cassiterite was unsteady adsorption, and a new entity assembled of BHA and octanol in a well manner was able to adsorb on the surface of cassiterite steadily. The probable self-assembly structure model of BHA and octanol existing on the surface of cassiterite was analyzed. INTRODUCTION Cassiterite is the prime and economic mineral from which tin metal is extracted economically (Qin et al., 2011). The estimated tin metal resources in the world is about 4.9 million tonnes, about 30.5% of which is distributed in China (Mineral commodity summaries, 2013). Cassiterite has many characteristics such as including heavy, hard, and extremely brittle in nature. Hence cassiterite is preferentially concentrated by gravity separators. However, the influence of particle size on gravity concentration is obviously. The separation efficiency is very high for coarse particles while it drops down considerably for fine sizes. (Turner and Hallewell, 1993). Application of flotation and development of selective surfactants have made it possible to recover fine and ultrafine cassiterite from the gravity tailings. A substantial amount of research work on cassiterite flotation has been reported in the past years. The outcome of such research has helped to develop various collector reagents such as cupferron (Vivian, 1927), sodium dodecyl sulfate (Edwards and Ewers, 1951), sodium oleate (Collins et al., 1968), salicyaldehyde (Marabini, 1978), alkyl and aryl arsonic acids (Senior and Poling, 1986), alkyl and aryl phosphonic acids (Gruner and Bilsing, 1992), alkyl sulfosuccinamates (Khangaonkar and Kamarudin, 1994), and alkyl hydroxamates (Sreenivas and Padmanabhan, 2002)."

South Texas, one of the world's important oil and gas-producing areas, continued to hold interest during 1939 as another scries of new fields and new producing levels was developed within its boundaries at a fairly continuous rate throughout the year. There were 1801 wells drilled in this area in 1939, compared to 1678 in 1938; of these, 1515 were drilled in established fields, or as extensions to proven areas (semi-wildcat), and 286 were drilled as rank wildcats, in search of new production. Among these rank wildcats, 22 produced oil, 7 produced distillate and gas and 257 were abandoned as dry holes (see Table 5). Of the 1515 field and cxtension wells, 1213 produced oil, or distillate and gas, 50 produced only gas and 252 were dry; 38 found new productive sand levels in proven ficlds. Jim Wells County led this district in discoveries, having had 9 new fields arid 9 new productive sands found within its border during 1939. Most activc of the 1939 discoveries were Reynold?; and Ben Bolt fields in Jim Wells County and Minnie Bock field in Nueccs County; among producing fields the most activc were: East White Point and Aransas Pass (McCampbell). Production from South Texas in 1939 totaled 55,105,506 bbl. against a total of 56,152,122 bbl. produced in 1938. South Texas should continue its present rate of developrnent and exploration and this should result in the discovery of many fields in its numerous oil-bearing zones, and should also lead to more knowledge of the possibilities of its deeper horizons, such as the Mt. Selman and Wilcox formations; with the latter holding particular interest at the present time. Tide Water Associated Oil Company's A. M. Bruni No. I, Cole-Bruni field, Webb County, the deepest well drilled along the Mirando trend, was carried to 8959 ft., where it started to blow out from a Wilcox sand topped at 8954 ft., making gas, distillate and mud under heavy pressure. After the well was killed, drill stem beeame stuck and was cemented in place in order to test a Queen City (Mt. Selman) sand logged from 5620 to 5675 ft. This and other shows found in other wells along this trend, but out of this district, have served to increase the importance of this but little explored Sparta-Wilcox trend of South Texas during the year, and more activity along it is to be expected in the near future.

The aim of this paper is to point out the various ways in which design is taught in standard four-year mining engineering curricula in American colleges and universities; to discuss the reasons apparently justifying the great diversity of procedure that exists along this line; and to indicate possible solutions to the difficulties now attending the teaching of design. A study was made of typical four-year mining engineering curricula in 15 colleges and universities of the United States (Table I). Great diversity in content of the various design courses, if taught as described, became apparent immediately. It appeared that it might be both interesting and instructive if the cause for this colorful variety could be found. Was the cause local mining conditions, departmental individuality, or actual necessity? Study of the school catalogues revealed that the various design courses could be classified into two fairly distinct types; namely, (I) those dealing with mine equipment or structures, and (2) those dealing with underground layout of mine workings. It seemed reasonable to label the first type of course "mining design" and the second type "mine design." Some such distinction must have been in the minds of mining educators, for we find both names (i.e., mine design and mining design) used to designate the design courses included in the various mining curricula Unhappily, the name and the apparent content of such courses do not, in all instances, conform to the classification made here, although in most instances such conformation does obtain (Table I). It is possible that in the exceptional case the method of teaching a design course, and consequently the content of it, may have been changed at some time without change in the name of the course. Apparently only 3 of the 15 schools made an effort to cover both types of design in their curricula (Table I). Two other schools did not list or describe any course of study that could with certainty be taken as a design course. Of the remaining 10 schools, 9 gave a mining-design type of course and one gave a strictly mine-design type. Obviously, the preponderance of design courses afforded are of the mining-design type. Why? To answer this question, it is necessary to make a study of the prerequisites for the two types of design courses taught. In all schools the design courses were taught in the senior year; in eight, design was taught throughout both semesters; in two, it was taught during the first semester only; and in three it was taught during the second semester only. Consequently, excepting the last three cases noted, it is obvious that all prerequisites for a design course should be completed by the end of the junior year PREREQUISITES What are the probable prerequisites for the different kinds of design courses as they appear to be taught? Component wear due to particle-laden flow is a significant challenge in the minerals processing industry in the handling and transportation of abrasive mineral slurries. Studying wear through experimentation is time-consuming and expensive; therefore possessing the ability to accurately simulate, understand and predict wear in these complex environments is highly desirable. The ability to predict wear is important in both the design of equipment in order to maximise the performance over the wear life of the components, as well in minimising potentially costly and dangerous failures and unscheduled maintenance.. Particle-induced wear is a complex problem, requring an understanding of coupled fluid-solid motion, geometry deformation in response to fluid-solid behaviour, moving geometries and wear modelling. Although the literature demonstrates that rebounding particles and changes to surface profiles can have a significant effect on subsequent wear rates and patterns, the challenge of implementing a model to account for this effect in complex geometries has been addressed by only a few authors in the literature. This paper describes a new wear simulator, leveraging fluidity, an open-source, massively parallel, finite element based CFD simulator capable of unstructured adaptive meshing. The wear simulator includes the ability to model particle-laden flow using representative Lagrangian particles and dynamic remeshing of geometry in response to wear and component movement. These capabilities are demonstrated using wear and the associated dynamically deforming boundaries within a Coriolis tester arm, with the results comparing favourably with the experimentally observed wear patterns. The Kaiser Aluminum Company Smelter, one of several in the Pacific Northwest, was built in 1942 and operated by the Olin Company during World War II and then purchased by Kaiser Aluminum after the war. At its height, the facility employed over 350 workers and was capable of producing 73,000 tons of aluminum per year. It was closed in 2000 through a combination of rising electrical and labor costs, and the inability to compete with more up-to-date foreign facilities.

Technology has no recognized rank in what is called polite literature; the subject-matter of engineering is not supposed to lend itself to artistic treatment; we are the hewers of wood and drawers of water to the high-priests of learning that live on the cold summit above our humbler dwellings. Therefore the hierophants smile at the notion of 'style'- “that curiously personal thing”--in technical writing. The "great art" of Pater, the "inevitable phrase" of Raleigh, the "note of distinction" that Arnold demanded are said to be beyond the scope, as they are supposed to be beside the need, of a writer on geology or engineering. This is a narrow view. Science, no less than belles lettres, calls for the best exercise of the human intelligence; the art of writing should be employed as skilfully and as earnestly in a description of the structure of the Sierra Nevada, or of the construction of a tunnel through the range, as in a rhapsody welcoming the rosy fingers of the dawn. The idea still lingers that fine writing does not befit technology, even though the masters of the Victorian period- Huxley, Tyndall, Ruskin-proved that science is worthy to be arrayed in the best robes that the looms of thought can weave. At the beginning of these lectures I quoted Barrie's remark touching the inability of the scientific man to express himself. That imputation has been passed to the technologist, whose utilitarian pursuits are supposed to make him too clumsy for the refinements of human speech. We may not have acquired the self-consciousness of those writers on Art whose "power of expression is so cultivated that their sensual caterwauling may be almost mistaken for the music of the spheres"; nor can we imitate the politicians, who have the ability to speak far beyond anything that they may have to say; but we too have a litera-

Although the foundation of a unified treatment of fluid flow in variably saturated porous media was established more than seventy years ago, no serious attempt was made to develop it until the early 1970's. Ever since, a number of unsaturated-saturated numerical models have been reported in the literature. However, none of these models have treated multidimensional, multiphase flow in deforming media, parts of which may undergo extensive secondary fracturing. A situation such as this is not uncommon in coal mining operations in which the longwall method of extraction is employed. The present model has been structured to handle such physical systems. This paper presents the mathematical formulation, the numerical algorithm, and a further validation and evaluation of the modified model. The model treats a multiphase flow in a three- dimensional regime and handles mining excavations of complex and changing configurations.

"Horsehead Metal Products is a zinc refinery in Mooresboro, NC, treating crude Waelz oxide (WOX) to produce special high-grade zinc by a hydrometallurgical process comprising leaching, zinc solvent extraction/electrowinning, melting and casting and bleed treatment. Cadmium removal by zinc-dust cementation plays an essential role in the bleed treatment circuit to prevent cadmium buildup in the circuit. Silica, though present at a low level of approximately 0.3 percent in the WOX feed material, had a significant impact on the efficiency of cadmium cementation with zinc dust, most likely due to the passivation of zinc dust particles with silica gel. Solid/liquid separation efficiency by filter press was also affected. To identify the source of the silica issues, silica levels were mapped throughout the circuit, and adjustments, including using pregnant leach solution as the feed to cementation, and pH control in the WOX leaching and neutralization were introduced to mitigate the issues created by silica gel in the circuit.
