The major threat to the sustainability of Aluminium Industry is its significant contribution to global warming by way of generation of non eco-friendly gases during its production cycle from Bauxite to the finished product. Though reduction measures are taken in control and effective recovery of values from pot room gases, efforts in use of environment friendly additives in the final products production line is warranted. In this line, the present paper describes our efforts in the use of a new generation refining flux which apart from helping in effective removal of alkali metals, reduction in inclusions and ensure a better metal cleanliness shall also aide in reduction of obnoxious gases generated during the metal refining process prior to casting. The aim of the current work was to reconcile the practical results with the old generation fluxes used. Further improvements to bring in a better metal cleanliness will also be discussed.

Pound Road Quarry is an alluvial gravel quarry owned and operated by Fulton Hogan Ltd. for the supply of aggregate in Canterbury, and is the largest quarry in the South Island in terms of production. It has evolved from three separate quarries, as a result of which extraction has occurred sporadically in a number of areas. Due to this factor, and the need to manage environmental impacts, a detailed quarry management plan was completed in 1995 which formed the basis for implementation of a certified environmental management system.   In December 1997, the quarry was the first in New Zealand to achieve ISO 14001 (TELARC) accreditation for implementation of an environmental management system. The main potential environmental impacts arising from the quarry operation include dust, noise and groundwater contamination, and visual landscape effects associated with gravel extraction, the mitigation of which is achieved by means of æbest practiceÆ methods. All quarry operations are controlled in terms of the environmental management system by means of regular (monthly and yearly) environmental reviews, appropriate auditing of environmental documents, and monitoring of environmental targets in accordance with consent and statutory requirements.

In the states east of the Mississippi River, oil field operations were generally restricted during 1927. Active drilling was chiefly confined to the flood district of Bradford, and to the new areas in western Kentucky, Michigan, and southwestern Indiana. In spite of the general depression, production increased in every state, except Illinois. This unexpected increase is. due to several factors. First, in 1926 there was little flush production outside of Illinois, and the decline 'curves in all states are exceedingly flat. Second, the floods in Bradford, Pennsylvania, and Allegany County, New York, proceeded normally and increased production in those states for the fourth consecutive year. Third, new pools in Kentucky, Indiana and Michigan gave important flush production. Fourth, the general unsatisfactory market forced the operators to scrutinize carefully all their operations and improve efficiency and production in all possible ways. Increases amounted to approximately 2,000,000 bbl. Illinois lost, 900,000 bbl., leaving a net gain for the states east of the Mississippi River amounting to 1,100,000 bbl., or a total 40,268,000 barrels. Pennsylvania and New York In northern Pennsylvania and southern New York, the principal activity centered in the districts where flooding is being used to increase the recovery from the old districts. Once started, the flood cannot be shut off. The producer must drill wells and take his oil on schedule, or irrevocably lose it. Accordingly, in face of an adverse market Bradford and Bolivar operations increased 24 per cent. This area furnished more than 40 per cent. of the oil wells completed east of the Mississippi River last year, although the average initial production was less than 2.5 bbl. Unlike all normal fields, this production increases for several months until water appears in the well. For this reason, these wells will produce much more oil than would appear probable from the statement of initial production. The volume changes occurring during the reduction by hydrogen of single, high-grade hematite pellets under isothermal and non- isothermal conditions were investigated using a time-lapse photographic technique. The major cause of swelling during iso- thermal reduction at temperatures in the range 600-1000¦C, was the disruptive stresses set up during the transformation of hematite to mag- netite. The severity of the disruption was temperature dependent; the degree of swelling increased with increases in the reduction temp erature. Under non-isothermal reduction conditions, in which the pellet temperatures were increased at constant heating rates over the temperature range 500-1000¦C, minor swelling (6-8%) occurred in the initial stages of reduction followed by pellet contractions of up to 15% in the final reduction stages. The low initial swelling and high final pellet shrinkages were due to a com- bination of the temperature dependence of the swelling mechanism, and the sintering of fine pores in the reduced iron in the latter stages of reduction at higher temperatures.

The flash X-ray has been used more than a decade to study the configuration of the jet from a shaped charge. The high-speed, rotating-mirror smear camera has provided time-distance graphs of detonations and shock fronts in transparent materials, and the high-speed framing camera has given pictorial representations of the progress of explosive phenomena. Adequate means for measuring the paths and velocities of all parts of the shaped-charge cavity Iiner during the collapse phase have not existed heretofore. A technique enabling the single-lens framing camera to make stereoscopic photographs of the cavity liner while it is collapsing has been developed. Analysis of this photographic record gives the directions and velocities of various parts of the Iiner surface, permitting direct quantitative measurement where this has previously been impossible. Significant improvements in shnped-clrarge design are expected to result. INTRODUCTION The familiar oilwell jet perforating charge, generally referred to as a "shaped charge", is related to the Mun-roe charge first described by C. E. Munroe in 1888 and later by Neumann in 1910. It differs in construction from the Munroe charge in that its cavity is lined with some inert material (usually metal)', and it differs in performance by projecting a fast jet of dense liner material against the target instead of a stream of expanding detonation products. Fig. 1 represents a typical shaped charge in axial cross section. The charge is circularly symmetrical about its longitudinal axis. The cavity at the right is lined with metal, usually copper; and, with the exception of air, the liner is otherwise completely empty. High-explosive material is intimately in contact with the convex surface of the liner and extends in the other direction to the booster. This is a pellet of high explosive having somewhat different characteristics and serves to couple the detonator to the main charge. When the detonator is fired, a small hemispherical reaction zone of very high temperature and pressure occurs at its output end. The booster responds, adding its own latent energy to the reaction, thereby initiating the main charge. The reaction progresses throughout the main charge at a velocity of 7 to 8 mm/microsecond until all the explosive material has reacted. With a reaction pressure of about 160,000 atm, the surrounding material is moved rapidly away from the high-pressure zone. As the detonation proceeds along the cavity liner, moving from apex to edge, the liner is collapsed toward the axis of the cavity, where liner material from all parts of the concave surface converges. A zone of extraordinarily high pressure results. with only one escape path—outward along the axis. The particles from the liner, thus, become a jet of very high velocity, with a density characteristic of the material from which the liner was made. The kinetic energy of the jet, concentrated in a small area of the target, has great penetrating power. It overcomes the strength of any target, and the target material crumbles or deforms plastically to escape from the path of the jet. An unlined cavity charge, on the other hand, projects a turbulent body of hot gaseous material against a target and erodes the exposed surface. With equal quantities of explosive, the penetration effectiveness of an unlined charge is a small fraction of that of a lined charge. It still rains in the Choco! I well remember one evening a dozen years ago, while traveling toward the town of Negua in a small champa or dug-out canoe, the rain fell so heavily that I had to work my hardest to bail out the water with a large totuma or gourd in order to keep the canoe afloat, the native boatman meanwhile plying his paddle in the stern. If any one thinks bailing is easy work, let him scoop out a quart or more at a stroke, 40 times a minute for half an hour, and I venture that he will change his opinion. These small canoes required only one paddler to make the 3 miles an hour which is the standard rate of aquatic progress on the Choco. Another time, on the Atrato river, about six o'clock in the afternoon, the rain fell so heavily that an empty gourd, 9 in. in diameter and 4.5 deep, was filled to the brim in 90 sec., timed by a watch. Such downpours are typical, but unless caught in one it is not specially noticed. These downpours seldom last more than an hour, and frequently cover only a limited area, occasionally falling on one bank of a river and not on the other. During the night-time, the rain, if gentle, will usually last until dawn, and sometimes an intermittent drizzle will keep up all day as well, although, as a rule, it rarely rains during the day. The rise of the rivers, due to the rain-fall, varies from a few inches to several feet. One night in August, 1899, the spuds of the dredge Margaret, operating on the Atrato river, showed a rise of 16 ft., and for 3 days thereafter occurred the greatest flood known in that district for 32 years. The Coal Research Bureau of the School of Mines at West Virginia University, using a modified design of a Russian flotation device, was able to obtain a clean coal product containing 7.64 percent ash with 94 percent yield and 97 percent coal recovery. This favorable performance was obtained with the semi-pilot scale flotation cell operating as a simulated three stage unit on slurry taken from the fine coal circuit of a coal preparation plant. This experimental device, consisting of a sheet metal cyclone-like unit mounted on a U-shaped uplift pipe, uses a combined flotation and cyclone action to beneficiate the minus 14 mesh partially cleaned feed product. In addition to providing comparable analytical results, the airlift-cyclone possesses other attractive features among them being a low capital expenditure, utilization of moderate plant floor space, efficient "operation on high density feed slurry, and absence of moving parts.

This work focuses on the operational and safety issues associated with karst voids in large opening underground mines. Issues include water inrush, structural instability, and engineering uncertainty in these environments. Coupled with the fracturing prevalent in folded sedimentary rocks, karsts are complex and challenging ground control risks. Traditional methods of predicting karst locations, such as probe drilling, are impeded by the inconsistent spatial distribution and variable sizes of the features. Ground penetrating radar (GPR) is a geophysical technique that transmits radio waves into a medium and subsequently detects reflected waves via a receiver. The travel time and energy of received signals are then processed and interpreted. The difference in material properties between limestone and open karsts causes strong reflections. GPR is frequently used as a geophysical surveying technique in several industries, however there is a lack of published research on underground mining GPR applications. The purpose of this work is to prove the viability of GPR in underground stone mines for karst detection, and to discuss the importance of karst detection ahead of mining. INTRODUCTION The Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) currently lists 116 active underground stone mines in the United States, the vast majority of which extract limestone for crushed stone products. These limestone mines have the potential to encounter karst voids at some point in their operation, as most karstic regions of the United States develop in limestone rock masses (Kuniansky, Weary, & Kaufmann, 2016). Karsts, the cavities formed by the dissolution of carbonate rock, have long plagued the mining and tunneling industries, as well as been a hindrance on the Earth’s surface, producing sinkholes and ruining otherwise valuable land for construction and public use. The impact of karsts on the Gavarres tunnel in Spain is well documented by Alija et al; constant instability conditions, material spills into the tunnel, and unexpected cavities seriously delayed the project deadlines and “were not foreseen in the design” (Alija, Torrijo, & Qunita-Ferreira, 2013). At the water supply project in Sohngua River, China, Bin et al detail the presence of both water and sediment filled karsts which are sources of disastrous conditions at this tunnel (Bin, et al., 2017). A hydrological tunnel in Lebanon encountered numerous massive karsts in the tunneling path which required remediation via friction anchors, rockbolts, welded wire fabric, channel steel arch segments, invert steel beams, and shotcrete (Leech, Jaoude, & Ghanem, 2008). From a design standpoint, rock mass classification schemes, such as the RMR from Bieniawski and the Q-system from Barton, are not able to represent the true nature of a karstified carbonate rock mass, and therefore complex case-by-case analyses of underground conditions are necessary (Andriani & Parise, 2017).

Multicomponent materials are common in nearly all areas of materials science and technology, yet the use of phase diagrams to represent these complex systems is hampered by the requirement of three or more dimensions for explicit graphical representation. In the present work, the "solid-modeling" capabilities of a computer aided design (CAD) system have been applied to the representation of three-dimensional phase diagrams. Relevant phase diagrams for a hypothetical quaternary eutectic system were constructed and used to demonstrate the capabilities of the technique. These capabilities lead to relative ease of phase diagram construction and improved access to qualitative and quantitative information. Results of this work are contrasted and compared to previous efforts toward computer ,representation of phase diagrams. It is concluded that solid-modeling of three-dimensional phase diagrams can be used to advantage in both education and research.

The Mg-Si and Mg-Ge phase diagrams were rede-levtnined by thermal analysis, and the existence of a single congruent melting compound in each system was confirmed. The melting points of the two compounds Mg2Ge and ,Wg2Si were found to be 1117.4° and 1085.0°C respectively. The euteclics for the Mg-Ge system occur at 635.6°C (1.15 at. pcl Ge) and 696. 7°C (64.3 at. pct Ge); for the Mg-Si system the eutectics are at 6376°C (1.16 at. pct Si) and 945.6°C (53.0 al. pcl Si). The phase diagrams and known thermodynamic data were used to calculate activity values for both systems. The activities calculated for the Mg-Ge system agreed very well with those previously published. Partial molar enthalpy values for the Mg-Si systetn were calculated from the phase diagram for the composition region where no experimental values have been reported. THE phase diagram for any system is an important source of thermodynamic data. Steiner, Miller, and Komarek1 have derived equations which permit calculation of the activity in binary systems with an inter-metallic compound! if the liquidus and enthalpy data are known. The thermodynamic properties of the Mg-Ge and Mg-Si systems have recently been determined in this by by an isopiestic method, and it was considered that it would be interesting to compare these directly determined values with those computed from the phase diagram. The basic features of the Mg-Ge and Mg-Si systems are essentially similar. The one intermediate compound present in each system. Mg2X, crystallizes in the antifluorite structure and melts congruently. Raynor4 has accurately determined the temperature and composition of the magnesium-rich eutectic in both the Mg-Ge and Mg-Si systems. Klemm and West-linning5 investigated the entire Mg-Ge liquidus, employing sintered alumina crucibles; the purity of the magnesium and germanium starting materials was not reported. The melt was not stirred, and the temperature was automatically recorded to an accuracy of ±3°C. The authors reported large weight changes due to magnesium evaporation between 50 and 67 at. pct Mg. The Mg-Si system has been studied by a number of investigators, and the results have been compiled by Hansen and Anderko.6 Significant discrepancies exist between the two principle investigations of voge17 and Wohler and Schliephake.8 Two different grades of silicon were used by Vogel, one of 99.2 pct purity and the other quite impure, containing 6 pct Fe and 1.7 pct Al. The magnesium purity was not specified. The melts were contained in graphite crucibles with porcelain thermocouple protection tubes under an atmosphere of hydrogen. Samples weighing 10 g were rapidly heated to 50° to 100°C above the liquidus: held, and then rapidly cooled without stirring. Accuracy was ±1 at. pct which is equivalent to a maximum error in temperature of ±18°C. Wohler and Schliephake used 97.9 pct Mg and 99.48 pct Si. The graphite crucibles contained a stirrer and the 15-g samples were melted under an atmosphere of streaming hydrogen. The samples were chemically analyzed after each run. Because of the scarcity of the data, the impurity of the starting materials, and the resultant uncertainty and inconsistency in the published liquidus values, it was decided to undertake a reevaluation of the Mg-Ge and Mg-Si phase diagrams by thermal analysis. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Alloys were prepared from 99.99+ pct Mg (Dominion Magnesium Ltd.) with impurities in ppm: 20 Al, 30 Zn, 10 Si, <1 Ni, <1 Cu. <10 Fe; 99.999 pct Ge (United Mineral and Chemical Corp.), and 99.999 pct Si (Wacker Chemie Corp.). All graphite parts were machined from high-density (1.89 g per cu cm) G-grade graphite obtained from Basic Carbon Corp. with a total ash content of 0.04 pct. Boron nitride parts were machined from rods of National-grade H.B.N. boron nitride. All graphite and boron nitride pieces were baked out under running vacuum at 1100°C for 24 hr before us Cylindrical graphite crucibles (1; in. OD, 23/4 in. long, l3/8 in. ID) were tightly closed with threaded graphite covers which had 21/4-in.-long thermocouple wells and 1/4-in.-diam off-center holes for stirrers. The cover and thermocouple well were machined from a single piece of graphite. A stirrer was made from a flat cylindrical graphite plate perforated with five 3/16-in.-diam holes and a 1/2-in.-diam central hole, and was held parallel to the crucible bottom by a 1/4-in.-diam. 4-in.-long graphite rod which screwed into the plate and extended up through a tightly fitting hole in the crucible cover. An iron core enclosed in a glass capsule was attached to the stirrer with an 18-in.-long molybdenum wire, so that the stirrer could be magnetically raised and lowered from outside the system. One crucible and stirrer with essentially the same dimensions given above was made entirely of boron nitride. Chunks of magnesium were premelted, cast into 11/2-in.-diam. rods, and then cut into lengths varying from a to 1 in. A 5/16-in. hole was drilled through the center of each piece to accommodate the thermocouple well and the individual pieces were then cleaned and rinsed with acetone. The total weight of an alloy was 50 to 70 g in the Mg-Ge system and 40 to 60 g in the Mg-Si system. The pure components were weighed to an accuracy

THE texture method (utilizing monochromatic copper radiation) was applied to determine the orientation of the columnar grains of two vacuum cast beryllium ingots of 3 in. diam. Samples were mounted in a fixture as illustrated in Fig. 1, which permitted rotation and translation in order to approximate the method used for wires. The specimens were aligned so that the major axes of the columnar grains were parallel. Rotation was around the growth direction. After each translation the specimen holder was rotated 2 deg (1 deg for the samples from the second ingot) until a range of 30 deg on either side of the vertical was covered. The speed of translation was 1 mm per sec. A representative Debye pattern is shown in Fig. 2. The pattern was compared with theoretical patterns for various orientations. Also shown in Fig. 2 is the disposition of reflections on the (10i0), (0002), and (1011) Debye rings for the two possibilities that growth is either in the <10i0> or <ll30> direction. It is apparent that no significant preference for the direction of columnar growth is indicated. It is considered that the lack of a preferred orientation is due to the occurrence of the phase transformation (reported by Martin and oore&apos; to occur above 1250 "C) which masked the original solidification orientation. One of the most difficult places to ventilate in any mine is the working face area. With an everchanging configuration, continual modification and extension to the ventilation system is necessary to maintain an adequate supply of fresh air and to avoid mixing and recirculation in the face area. In coal mines, methane emissions and high dust levels as coal is broken and removed from the face area can produce unhealthy and dangerous conditions if ventilation is not adequately monitored.

This study was undertaken primarily to determine the reasons for certain variations in the soundness of gravel aggregate taken from a number of widely separated points on the Tennessee River. Under laboratory tests, concrete made with these various aggregates in some cases exhibited marked differences in specific gravity. crushing strength and durability. Gravel was studied in detail from Chattanooga to the mouth of the river and to a lesser extent from Chattanooga to Knoxville. The causes of variation were determined, and variational curves were constructed, which accurately predict the composition of aggregate at any point on the river and therefore its relative suitability for use in concrete. The aggregate at any point is suited for making sound concrete; the variance of suitability is due to varying percentages of sandstone and weathered material, which are less sound than other constituents. Introduction When it is stated that the aggregate from one point is inferior to that from another, it must not be construed to mean that the gravel is unfit for use. The classification upon which such aggregate ratings are based is largely arbitrary, thus inferiority or superiority is merely relative. Samples of gravel were selected from stockpiles at the dams of the Tennessee Valley Authority under construction, from the stockpiles of private companies along the river, and from samples taken by the gravel-exploration barge of the T. V. A. One hundred or more gravels of each size studied were selected at random by taking small handfuls while walking around the piles. These were separated according to the different mineral or rock constituents present, and the percentage of each constituent was obtained by counting. At least three such samples were taken from each size, and all checked with one another within a few per cent. The results were then averaged. In order to check on the accuracy of such sampling, a whole sample was taken from one point after the gravel was thoroughly mixed. The two methods gave approximately identical results. An economic analysis for evaluating coal preparation plants in the Appalachian Region is presented. A complete coal preparation plant which includes multi-streams and/or multi-stages coal cleaning circuits, complete closed water circuits, environmentally acceptable refuse disposal and reclamation systems is used to determine the capital and operating costs. The plant is capable of producing metallurgical grade clean coal or deep cleaned steam grade coal for future power generating plants use. Utilizing a profit maximization as a decision criterion, an optimal yield, and optimal coal clean¬ing circuits, closed water circuits, and disposal and reclamation systems for a given coal characteristic may be selected among the process alternatives by using a process simulation-economic model of the coal preparation plant. A deterministic analysis is used to calculate the discounted-cash-flow interest rate of return (DCFIROR) and project the selling prices, and determine the Return on Investment (ROI) for the cases of 32.65% and 52.74% plant utilization with producing two cleaned products. Sensitivity analyses are performed to quantify the effect of total capital investment, operating cost, run-of-mine cost and yield on an economic criterion-ROI and selling prices. A probabilistic evaluation using the Monte Carlo simulation technique is further made to quantify the risk involved in obtaining the desired profit levels. The results of the economic analysis for a given coal preparation plant configuration and characteristics of raw coal indicates that the selling prices of producing two cleaned products are greatly affected by the change in percent of plant utilization (production schedule), yield, and run-of-mine cost, and total capital cost. The sensitivity analysis also shows that the total capital investments has a three times greater effect on required selling prices than operating costs. The risk analysis shown that the overall economics look very attractive with current coal sale prices and 52.74% plant utilization.

FEBRUARY GENERAL MEETING The January General Meeting of the Institute was held in Kelvin House, Johannesburg on 21st January, 1970, at 4.30 p.m. Mr V. C. Robinson (Vice-President) was in the Chair. OBITUARY The Vice-President: "It is my sad duty to announce the death of the following members of the Institute: Reginald Gordon McConnell, Member, who joined the Institute on 24th April, 1946 and passed away on 26th September, 1969. James Henry Moore, Member, who joined the Institute on 28th February, 1951 and passed away on 2nd January, 1970. As a mark of respect to the memory of the deceased and in sympathy with the bereaved I would ask those present to stand and observe a few moments silence." 2. GENERAL BUSINESS The Vice-President: "I wish to announce that except for the student prizes awarded at the November meeting, Council has decided to make no awards for 1969. Are there any further matters to raise under the heading of General? If not, we will proceed to the next item on the agenda which is the presentation of tonight&apos;s paper. 5. PAPER FOR PRESENTATION The Vice-President: "Professor Starfield may I call on you to deliver the paper entitled "A rapid method of calculating temperature increases along mine airways". After the presentation of the paper, the Vice-President said: The Vice-President: "Thank you very much, Professor Starfield. Gentlemen, I think that many of you here, who have to do with the design of mines in an age where costs and difficulties generally, are increasing at a rate which we find almost impossible to keep up with, I would agree with you that we are fortunate to have a band of people like Professor Starfield, and others who are dedicated to producing the tools, and methods which we need to sort out these problems. I am sure that you would agree with me, that the old rule-of-thumb methods are finished forever, that we can never go back to the methods which served us in the past, when we were close to the surface and had not met the conditions which we are meeting now, and which we are going to meet in an increasing degree in the future. It is to people like Professor Starfield, with these clear, completely logically described new methods, that we look for the solution of our problems in the future. I think the whole problem of layout of any mine, is one where you can reliably prognosticate what you are likely to find in a variety of circumstances to meet the wide range of things which must happen when you consider the costs in these modern operations. Thank you very much, Professor Starfield, for coming and giving us this paper. Thank you for making plain to me how these mathematical models of yours are used. I am sure that what you have said will be a very valuable addition to the archives of this Institution. Thank you very much, indeed, and Gentlemen, will you please show your appreciation in the normal way." (Applause). Professor J. de V. Lambrechts, Mr R. Hemp and Dr A. The following notes apply more especially to the purchase of silverlead ores produced in the neighbourhood of Zeehan and Dundas; for it is this class of ore that is principally mined in those parts, and which creates competition among the ore buyers.In the early days of this field, most of the ore passed through the hands of the first buyer who had sufficient enterprise to establish himself at Zeehan but in more recent times, competition has been so keen that there are generally three or four buyers tendering. lf the output was large this would not matter so much from the buyers&apos; point of view but when we consider that the output of the field is only some 1,650 tons per month, and that of this 70 odd tons are produced by the Western and Montana mines, aud being sent home for realization, is withdrawn from local purchasers, there is really not enough for four buyers, especially at the present exorbitant prices they pay the miners.Some of the mines have a fixed sampling day, on which it is tacitly understood that the ore buyers will attend. Others, such as Grubb&apos;s Silver Mining Oompany, No-Liability, send round a printed reminder, stating the quantity of ore, and the date of sampling.
