The application of the cyanide process to complex sulphide ores for the extraction of the gold and silver is no longer a novelty; but, as an example showing modern teudencies in this direction, the following description of the new milling process at the Lucky-Tiger mine is offered: The extraordinary richuess of the ore in the upper workings of this mine made any thought of milling in its early days seem unnecessary. Its location in an almost inaccessible part of the rugged mountains just south of the Arizona boundary-line, and 60 miles from the town of Douglas, made the expense of bringing in machinery and sopplies a very serious consideration. But, after the property had been shipping high-grade ore on mule-back for a few years, there remained in the mine a considerable tonnage of vein-matter that mas too low in value to ship, but which it wag thought could be milled near the mine at a profit. The first milling-experiment consisted in the installation of Nissen stamps in conjunction with concentrating-tables and Frue vanners, but, as the ore from the upper workings contained most of its silver in the form of cerargyrite, this type of mill mas not successful. The proximity of the mine to the great copper-concentrating mills of Cananea and Moctezuma naturally made the influence of copper-milling ideas felt in the company's next instdlation. At considerable expense a stage-crushing concentrating-mill, with a capacity of 100 tons per day, was built. This mill was modeled along the lines of the most approved practice in copper-concentrators at that time, the main idea being that crushing by stages .in rolls was necessary in order to prevent losses from " sliming." THE valuable results that have followed the application in recent years of microscopic methods of research to problems of ore genesis have been significant, but possibly the recognition of their practical importance is not as general as might be, and while, as a scientific method of investigating ores and rocks, the advantage derived through the use of the microscope is unquestioned, its utility as an aid in solving shining problems arising during actual every-day mine examination and operation may not be fully appreciated. Perhaps the roost logical method of showing some of these practical applications of the microscope will be to consider first the prospect stage of a mining venture, then the uses to which the instrument may be put during the operation of a working and developed mine, and, finally, to discuss some of the problems of a metallurgical nature that ii-my arise during milling and smelting the ore. The valuation of mining property as a preliminary to acquiring ownership or determining the advisability of investing time and money in an enterprise is one of the most important and delicate problems that come before the mining engineer. The many and variable factors that have to be taken into account, as, for example, the geology of the district, availability of supplies, probable mining costs, transportation facilities, and the quality of ore, require a careful balancing of costs against recoverable values.

Nickel-cobalt laterite deposits have become the focus of attention for hydrometallurgical processing. Following the lessons of the second generation high pressure acid leach (HPAL) projects in Western Australia other Ni-Co laterite projects are now evaluating potential HPAL projects with a rigorous integrated approach that begins with geological modeling, resource estimation and metallurgical studies. The Vermelho nickel-cobalt laterite deposit has been under exploration and study for several years with investigations of various metallurgical processes. Recent HPAL studies have indicated that the nickel and cobalt laterite at this deposit is amenable to upgrading by silica rejection followed by pressure leaching. These studies have required a detailed geological investigation to generate a new resource model. The recent development of a sophisticated geological model integrated with a multi-element resource estimation for this complex tropical nickel laterite deposit in northern Brazil provides an example of the contribution of geology at the critical project stage where process technology decisions are made on relatively small samples of the total resource.\ Keywords: Ni Laterite, Geological Modeling, Resource Estimation

"The design of rock sockets for drilled shafts and piles proves to be a challenge for the Design Engineer. The magnitude of loads on the shaft and the behavior of the rock are critical in determining the required socket length. Several acceptable methods are available in the literature to analyze a rock socket under a combination of axial loads, lateral loads and moments. This paper will present a state-of-the-art methodology to analyze rock sockets utilizing deformation characteristics of the rock. This design methodology was implemented in the design of a major project in New York City.The project discussed herein is a marine transfer station planned for construction at East 91st Street along the East River in Manhattan. In order to support the piers and platform structures at a site with relatively shallow depth of the bedrock, rock sockets were required for the drilled shaft foundations. Rock sockets were utilized to provide the required fixity to the foundations and the structures. Acting at the top of the rock sockets are large shear forces and moments created by the lateral loads transferred from the structure.Upon review of the available techniques, a simplified method was proposed and used to analyze the rock sockets with a significant magnitude of lateral loading. The method recognizes two mechanisms through which the lateral shear and moment are transferred to the rock; a) load transfer through horizontal resistance of rock and b) the vertical shear resistance of the bond between socket and rock.The first load transfer mechanism was analyzed using the p-y curve method based on a rock model developed by Reese. The second was analyzed using a bond stiffness derived from the formula and curves utilized in the AASHTO Specifications for calculation of rock socket displacement. By comparing the two mechanisms, the main contribution to the large horizontal shear force that developed in the rock socket is identified.The paper will present a summary of the design methodology utilized in determining the length of the rock socket. It is believed that the presented method will provide substantial cost saving in selecting the most economical and efficient design length."

The federal standard for limiting exposures to miners from radon daughters was reduced from 12 working level months (WLM) per year to 4 WLM per year in 1971. However, even at that time some researchers were concerned that the new limit would eventually be shown to result in an excess risk for lung cancer mortality in miners. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) is now engaged in a comprehensive review of this topic. As the lead agency in this project, NIOSH has developed a work plan and established a work group to implement this plan. The procedure and specific considerations are outlined in the work plan for developing a comprehensive ionizing radiation standard recommendation for all miners, underground and surface. Such a recommendation will not only include estimates of health risks at various levels of exposure, but also appropriate recommendations for medical monitoring, sampling and analytical methods, sampling strategies, posting, engineering controls, personal protective equipment and recordkeeping. The work group has twenty-four members. Eleven members are NIOSH personnel representing six divisions of the Institute. The remaining thirteen members represent other federal agencies, specifically the Bureau of Mines of the Department of the Interior, the Mine Safety and Health Administration and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration of the Department of Labor, the Office of Radiation Protection of the Environmental Protection Agency, and the Bureau of Radiological Health of the Food and Drug Administration, Department of Health and Human Services. Several factors contributed to the decision to initiate this project. First, the efficacy of the current standard was considered. An initial study group was formed in the spring of 1980 by NIOSH to identify and evaluate articles that contained information on lung cancer mortality risks at and below the present permissible exposure limit. The conclusion drawn from their evaluation was that a two-fold excess risk of lung cancer mortality at and below 120 cumulative working level months (CWLM) of exposure to radon daughters is evident. This composite indication from selected studies was of sufficient magnitude to justify further evaluation. The study group, however, recognized that other studies and information must also be considered in a quantitative risk assessment which would form the basis for recommending an acceptable and feasible permissible exposure limit. A second factor in the decision to pursue further evaluation was the gaps in the current standard that had previously been identified by the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA). These included lack of medical monitoring of underground miners and absence of regulations for surface miners. The seriousness of the health hazard relative to other hazards in mining was also considered. Along with exposures to silica and asbestos fibers, radiation was judged to be one of the major health hazards in mining, These combined factors constituted the justification to develop criteria and recommendations for improved mandatory health standards. The development process begins with a survey and review of the available world-wide information on the topic, including data and information developed by NIOSH. The end product of this review is to be a document that will contain an evaluation of the collected information and support for any recommendations that are made. To develop this document, the present work group has been divided into five task groups with the following emphases: Health Effects, Medical Aspects, Monitoring, Environmental Exposures, and Engineering Controls and Work Practices. The Health Effects task group is to evaluate the evidence from epidemiologic and animal studies of adverse health effects associated with all forms of ionizing radiation encountered in mining and milling operations. The "weight-of-evidence" of the results of all relevant and useful studies will be summarized, with the reasons for emphasizing the cited studies. The critical cells or tissues and the factors that should be considered in estimating the dose to these areas from various types of radiation will be identified. An evaluation will be made of the possible impacts of smoking and exposure to diesel exhaust on the determination of health effects related to radiation. The implications of biologically redundant dose in terms of the time between tumor initiation and death will also be analyzed. The Medical Aspects task group is to review the generally-accepted and the state-of-the-art medical technology for the detection of adverse health effects from ionizing radiation exposure. An evaluation will be made of the accuracy of urine and fecal analysis, wholebody counting, chromosome analysis and nose blows, as well as their usefulness for early detection of adverse health effects. Early detection is of little utility to the affected individual unless subsequent medical care can improve the prognosis. Recommendations for screening tests will be made after carefully considering the accuracy of the diagnostic procedures and the usefulness of early detection. Required recordkeeping and transfer rights will also be addressed. The Monitoring task group is to consider the state-of-the-art technology for the monitoring of occupational radiation exposures. Instrumentation, sampling strategies and analytical procedures will be reviewed for both personal and area sampling. The implications of the associated levels of confidence for non-compliance decisions will be evaluated. The discussion will also include an evaluation of the feasibility of replacing present monitoring systems with recent technology and the impact that a possible lower permissible exposure limit would have on monitoring requirements. The Environmental Exposure task group is to investigate the field procedures and mathematical methodologies which have been used to quantitate exposure levels to the various kinds of ionizing radiation. The magnitude and direction of the possible biases in past exposure assessments will be estimated. Specific attention will be given to the controversies concerning the quantification of the biological dose equivalent and the feasibility of recommending standards for mixed radiation exposures which use "rem" as the unit of measurement. Mechanical sorting of "poor" rock accumulated from past native copper mining operations has been under study at the Michigan Tech's Institute of Mineral Research for several years. Prior to this work, the poor rock dumps totaling approximately 9 million tons containing an estimated 35-70 million pounds of copper (1) have been considered mainly as a local source of road aggregate used from time to time and consequently of minor value. An electro¬mechanical sorting machine developed by International Sorting Systems Corporation of Santa Barbara, California has been tested for preconcentration of the waste rock before conventional milling (2,3). The ISSC machine has possibilities for underground preconcentration of crushed mine-run native copper ores. The objective of the study described here was to provide information about limi¬tations on sortability due to characteristics of the ore and present crushing practices. When the native copper mines were in operation prior to termination in 1969, two types of ore were produced, amygdaloidal and conglomeritic. In the first type copper occurs in vesicles left by gas bubbles entrapped during rapid cooling of the tops of lava flows. The conglomeritic ore beds consist of rounded pebbles and fragments cemented together by calcite, epidote, chlorite, and feldspar; the copper occurs around pebbles, in cracks, and sometimes as partial or total re¬placements of pebbles. The copper in the conglomeritic ore usually is in finer grain sizes than that in the amygdaloidal ore, and large (plus 4 inch) copper masses are virtually absent.

High pressure grinding has been introduced into many grinding applications. The high pressure grinding roll offers capacity increases of existing plants and savings in operating costs. Also metallurgical advantages could be achieved. The first high pressure grinding roll in a copper mine was commissioned in Arizona in July 1995. This paper provides information about the operating experience gathered during the first months of operation. The current flowsheet will be described as well as further options for plant arrangements.

The surface effect is one of fundamental topics in physical chemistry that has been studied over decades. However, its effect has been neglected in metallurgy researches and industry applications in the past years. With the progress of science and technology in metallurgy, the consideration of surface effect to the metallurgical processes has been paid more and more attention. In this report, it is shown that, how this factor affects the physicochemical properties of metallurgical processes and how to derive some new and more correct theoretical formulae for its application. Besides, some new technique related to the application of this factor in the experiment has also been developed for both fundamental research and industry applications. It is hoped that these progresses will promote some new developments both in fundamental and industrial applications for metallurgy processes.

"Copper(II) can be recovered or removed from acidic copper sulfate solutions as cuprite or metallic copper powder by reduction with carbohydrates (van der Weijden et al., 2001, 2002). In order to make this process suitable for a commercial scale pipe reactor, process conditions and reactor configuration need to guarantee proper throughput of the dilute suspension. This is where crystal engineering also comes into view. Copper powder characteristics, such as size and shape of particles, influence the tendency to adhere to reactor walls and to agglomerate, which in turn influence the throughput. Furthermore, separation, drying, packaging and product quality, are dependent on the powder characteristics.In this paper the effect of both chemical and physical parameters on the shape and size of particles were systematically studied in a number of autoclave experiments. These parameters include mixing, Cu(II) concentration, pH, temperature, seeding, use of additives and reactor materials. Additionally, Monte Carlo simulations of copper growth inside a Kenics static mixer were made. Results show that the use of additives, and the use of static mixers influence particle characteristics the most."

THE mechanism by which the super-saturated solid solution of 20 per cent silver in aluminum decomposes has been reported in two previous publications. 1,2 The analysis of streaks in Laue photograms showed that thin platelike particles (the so-called Guinier-Preston aggregates) form upon {111} matrix planes in the early state of decomposition.1 The size of these particles is larger, the higher the temperature at which they form in accordance with nucleation theory;3 at all temperatures they increase in size with aging.2 When they have grown thick enough to afford three-dimensional diffraction, powder X-ray photograms show that the structure is not that of the equilibrium precipitate y but that of a transition lattice ?'. Since this is also platelike in shape and also lies upon the {111} matrix planes with the {110} direction in the matrix parallel to the {11.0} direction in ?', it seems likely that the original platelet particles are merely ?' in an early stage of formation, and thus finely dispersed. The atomic spacing and pattern on the {00.0} plane in ?' are identical with those on the {111} matrix plane to which it lies parallel, and since comparable directions in the two planes are parallel, the lattices are thus coherent at the interface; an analogous coherence has been found in aluminum-copper alloys.3 The structures ?' and y are both close-packed hexagonal and are oriented alike; they differ only in interatomic distances. Consequently, ? ' is regarded as y strained from its ordinary dimensions by the lattice coherency between it and the matrix.2 The lattice movements that transform the matrix to the equilibrium precipitate appear to be very simple.2 The mechanism of precipitation in this system is simpler and is more precisely known than that in any other system,2,4 hence the system should be a profitable one for the difficult task of correlating property changes with structural alterations. The present report provides additional studies on powder X-ray diffraction from alloys of 10 per cent, 20 per cent and 30 per cent Ag, and presents the correlation of crystallographic changes with changes in microstructure, Brinell hardness and electrical resistivity of the three alloys. Anchored steel pipe piles are being used more frequently in British Columbia for shoreline projects such as public ferries, cruise ship docks, containership terminals and locally in the expansion of the Vancouver waterfront convention center. While a 36? diameter driven pile may provide adequate compression loads it will not always achieve enough penetration to provide the required tension loading. That is why bundles of threaded anchors or strands are drilled through the center, past the pile tip, and anchored into the underlying strata. Drilling up to 250 feet deep through the piles in variable water bearing strata presents challenges. Southwest Contacting Ltd. (SWC) recently completed the three largest anchored pile projects in BC; Vancouver Port and Convention Center Expansion, Vanterm Container Terminal and the new Prince Rupert Cruise Ship Terminal. This paper will present the separate challenges encountered drilling the anchors. At Prince Rupert, the recently completed Northland Cruise Ship Dock ultimately required a cased system to drill and install triple thread bar anchors. When 200 foot long steel pipe piling was unable to penetrate the highly fractured gneiss/schist bedrock to obtain a seal and consolidation grouting was unsuccessful, a modified cased system was advanced deep enough into the rock to eventually seal. The 3-#20 bars were changed to 12-strands since the bars wouldn?t fit through the smaller cased hole. The options were limited because each dolphin only had enough room for a small hydraulic drill rig that wouldn?t have the power to fully case the holes. The Canada Place Pier Extension in Vancouver?s Harbor led to the development of an innovative tip design used later at Vanterm. The 36? diameter steel pipe piles were driven closed end but modified to permit drilling through a concrete plug at the base. The driving of the piles at Canada Place often knocked out the plug so we were faced with 50 feet of sand up inside the pile when the drilling started. This led to discussions on how to safely remove the sand, solidify the tip, and continue drilling to get past the tip without undermining the pile. Finally, Vanterm Berth Extension was completed with a unique drilling system because the pile tips stopped in hydraulic sands, as opposed to the native till. We were faced with advancing the casing to the till without undermining the base of the pile. With 100 psi water pressure at the pile base after we broke through the concrete plug, the trick was to prevent charging the sand with our 250 psi air which liquefies it and forced it up our drill casing. And of course, it has to happen just before Christmas holidays!

Conventional processing of poly-metallic gold containing flotation concentrates are challenging for a number of reasons. One reason is that substantial copper and zinc in the cyanide leach solution compete with gold and silver for carbon adsorption sites. In this study, metal-cyanide adsorption kinetics and equilibrium are measured on three samples of coconut derived activated carbon and one sample of synthetic carbon. Loading selectivity was confirmed to be in the order gold>silver>copper>zinc for all carbon samples. "The influence of deformation on the properties of short-carbon-fiber reinforced 2024 alloy matrix composites was investigated in this study. It was found that the distribution of carbon fibers changed from the random state before deformation to the ordered state that carbon fibers arranged along the direction of rolling and extruding after deformation. Under the temperature range in control, the increase of rolling and extruding temperature would benefit to improve strength and elongation of composites, but was not conductive to improve the hardness of composites. With the increment of total deformation, all the strength and the hardness of composites became greater, nevertheless the elongation decreased. After being rolled and extruded, the strength and the hardness of composites were all bigger than those of composites before being rolled and extruded; moreover, the strength of extruded 2024 alloy matrix composites was higher than that of rolled 2024 alloy matrix composites under the same heat treatment conditions.IntroductionCarbon fibers have been reckoned as very important reinforcements due to the high specific strength, specific modulus, high thermal and electric conductivity, low expansion coefficient and good self-lubricant properties [1-4]. Light metal composites reinforced with carbon fibers, such as carbon fibers in an aluminum matrix, are widely used and studied. Some studies have concentrated on the interfacial characteristic of CF/Al composites in order to search for the way of improving the bonding between carbon fibers and the matrix alloy [5-8], and on the influence of the carbon fiber percent composition in the composites [9-11]. Some researchers began to take interest in the deforming characteristic and failure behavior of carbon fiber reinforced metal matrix composites [12-16]. However, the same with other metal materials, most of CF/AI composites were prepared by some single processes, such as powder metallurgy, extrusion casting and vacuum press infiltration, which caused that the composites products could not be manufactured directly. In order to cover the shortage of the mentioned above processes and get composites products with perfect mechanical properties and dimensional accuracy, the composites should be reworked by rolling, extruding or forging process. Compared with research about manufacturing process, the correlative investigation on the reworking of CF/Al composites was much less evidently, which restricted the application and the further development of CF/Al composites."

Four massive pillar collapses in limestone mines, and one in a marble mine, occurred between 2011 and 2021 in benched areas at the Appalachian physiographic province. We characterized the rock mass at 43 limestone mines using the Geological Strength Index and, by plotting the results on a physiographic relief map, determined that GSI values between 55 and 70 preferentially occur in the Appalachian and Ouachita Mountains, which were subject to deformation during the Ouachita and Alleghanian Orogenies. Limestone mines located in formations of similar age in the Interior Plains, where deformation was less developed, are characterized by Geological Strength Index values over 80. We present the results of pillar strength calculations that incorporate the Geological Strength Index from mines that experienced massive collapse, as well as from mines with benched areas that did not collapse, to demonstrate the negative effect that a jointed rock mass has on pillar stability. We suggest that pillar designs, particularly those in which benching will be incorporated, should include allowance for rock mass quality. Because of the preferential dominance of lower GSI values in the Appalachians, we further suggest that pillar designs in this environment may require additional engineering assessment, especially where benching is intended. Lower GSI values may often translate into greater overbreak, which results in loss of pillar volume, corresponding wider back spans, and a decreased width-to-height ratio.

(Witwatersrand) (Visitor) The effects of stress on the directions of cracks that are propagating in a brittle medium are described. It is shown that the superimposition of stress fields from the holes of an array always adversely affects fragmentation. Consequently, the best fragmentation will result when holes are fired far enough apart in space or time for each to develop its whole crack pattern without disturbance from the others. This concept leads to a philosophy for the design of more effective blasting patterns, which has been verified on model scale and which explains many published, empirical results.

It has been discovered that water insoluble alcoholic solutions of alkyl hydroxamic acids serve as selective collectors for the flotation of phosphate mineral resources (Miller et al., 2000). The effectiveness of the new collector chemistry has been demonstrated by the results from single stage bench scale flotation experiments for feed material from plants in Florida, North Carolina, and Utah. In the best case, from experiments with low grade (5% P20,) coarse feed (16 x 35 mesh), a single stage phosphate recovery of 95% was achieved with a concentrate grade of 31% P20,. Such a separation efficiency could not be achieved using the traditional fatty acid/fuel oil collectors as is evident from a comparison of the respective grade/recovery curves.

At a time when mill availability is at a premium, production costs are rising, and lead time for mill liner casting is a year or more, mill liner design is an important factor in ore grinding. Testing and selection of the optimum liner profile for a given set of mill operating conditions can improve mill capacity, reduce liner wear rate, and lengthen liner life. The mill liner that grinds best, lasts the longest, and costs the least is a necessity for economic mill operation. After testing four mill liner profiles for 3.96 X 3.65-m (13 x 12-ft) overflow ball mills, Climax Molybdenum Co. found that an improved design increased mill tonnage by 2.72 t/h (3 stph) while reducing finish grind by 1.7% minus 100-mesh, reduced liner wear rate, and almost doubled liner life.

During the mineral processing of pyrites sulphide ores of some deposits of Russia loss of gold with tailings and pyrite concentrates amounts up to 40%~90%. The problem of selective allocation of gold-bearing pyrite is crucial. There are 4 mineralogy-technological groups of pyrite determined in copper-zinc sulphide ores, based on the increase of contents of gold in pyrite. The gold associated with group 4 pyrite contents of 85% the total mass of gold found in the pyrite. The flotation behaviour of the enriched fractions of pyrite (98%), of the allocated from the ore of Gay deposit, were studied essentially in various conditions ?? and the charge of Butyl xanthogenate of potassium (ButX). Some products of selective pyrite flotation were investigated by methods of scanning electronic microscopy, energy-dispersive and X-ray spectral microanalyses, definition of specific resistance and thermoelectric moving force.

THE purpose of this torsion balance survey and the quantitative calculations was to delimit the extension of the cap rock at the Hoskins Mound salt dome. The sulfur ore in the Gulf Coast sulfur-bearing salt domes occurs in the lime rock, which is the outer layer of the cap-rock mass, and also in the underlying gypsum zone. The status of the exploration and exploitation of the Hoskins Mound dome at the date of this survey is shown by Fig. 1. The mound had been covered by the very early prospect wells of the Mound Oil Co., and the later and more numerous prospect wells of The Texas Company. The Freeport Sulphur Co. was producing from the flank wells in the southwest quadrant. The limits of the cap were surmised to lie inside the centers of quad-rangles 4F, 3F, the center of the NE. ¼ of 2E, and the north line of 2D. That surmise was based partly on the data of Fig. 1 and partly on the position of the edge of the topographic mound. The management of the Freeport Sulphur Co. wished to block out the extent of its ore reserves with a minimum of expenditure. The management was informed by the writer that no geophysical method could map the presence or quantity of sulfur directly, or determine the presence and quantity of the lime-rock cap independently of the rest of the cap, but that a reasonable probability existed that the approximate position of the edge, the depth and the thickness of the cap-rock mass as a whole could be determined through quantitative calculations based on the data of a very careful torsion balance survey. Considerable lime rock would probably be present, of course, wherever much cap rock was present. This paper presents the data of the survey, our calculated prediction of the configuration of the cap rock, and the degree of confirmation by the subsequent drilling. The survey was made by the Geophysical Research Corporation, under the direction of the writer. The work of the calculations was done by Andrew Gilmour, then assistant to the writer.
