The Mungana group of mines, in the Chillagoe district, yielded 334,000 tons of ore giving 31,831 tons of lead, 7,907 tons of copper and 3,228,600 ounces of silver. The Girofla mine produced approximately 220,000 tons of ore, and with the Lady J ane mine supplied most of the ore from this centre. The deposit was discovered in 1888, but active development did not commence from the main shaft until 1898. A subsidiary of the New Chillagoe Railway and Mining Co. Ltd., the Mungana (Chillagoe) Mining Co. Ltd., worked the mine from 1902 until 1914, selling copper, copper-lead, lead ores and fluxes to the smelters at Chillagoe. The smelters stopped operations in 1914 when the richer ores of the Girofla had been worked out and production from the Lady Jane had ceased due to heavyground and fire. The Girofla shaft was 823ft. deep with a cross-cut at 810ft. At the 710ft. level contour drives had delineated the orebody, which had been stoped about 10ft. above the level. Except for flux ores which had been stoped only for favourable smelter tariffs, the orebody was practically exhausted above the 610ft. leveL Under company ownership the mine yielded 139,265 tons of an average grade of 4.QlYr copper, 16.2% lead and 12.5 oz. per ton silver.In 1921 the Queensland Government re-opened the mine and worked it until 1927. The North Lode (Fig. 2) was discovered almost immediately at the 100ft. level and was worked down to the 410ft. leveL The ore from this branch and the completion of the stope at the 710ft. level yielded about 80,000 tons of ore averaging 0.4 copper, 9.8 lead and 7.8 oz. per ton silver during this period.

The future of Materials Processing in Space (MPS) in the Space Station Era is being assured today by a strong coordinated science program which looks to solve these problems, the answers to which serve to underpin the technical foundation upon which future metallurgical and materials processes will be built. The critical link between the product and process development activities that accompany this science endeavor is the "nuts and bolts" hardware that will ultimately operate in the space environment. Ground-based facilities including drop facilities and aircraft provide excellent product development and process concept study tools. Shuttle flights with Spacelab and commercially developed space facilities represent the evolutionary path to Space Station processing facilities. Today the most promising areas of MPS are crystal growth, containerless, and quasicontainerless processing. The unique features of these processes will be highlighted. Finally a more visionary perspective of MPS will be presented that incorporates the limits of today's knowledge with the economic "necessity" of tomorrow.

The use of machine vision in the monitoring and control of metallurgical plants has become a very attractive option in the last decade, especially since computing power has increased drastically in the last few years. The use of cameras as a non-intrusive measurement mechanism not only holds the promise of uncomplicated sampling but could provide more consistent monitoring, as well as assistance in decision making and operator and metallurgist training. Although the very first applications of machine vision were in the platinum industry, no automated process control has been developed for platinum group metals (PGMs) as yet. One of the reasons is that to date froth features could not be related to key performance indicators, such as froth grade and recovery. A series of laboratory experiments was conducted on a laboratory-scale platinum froth flotation cell in an effort to determine the relationship between the platinum grade and a combined set of image features and process conditions. A fractional factorial design of experiments was conducted, investigating 6 process conditions, namely air flow rate (x1), pulp level (x2), collector dosage (x3), activator dosage (x4), frother dosage (x5) and depressant dosage(x6), each at levels. Videos were recorded and analysed to extract 20 texture features from each image. By using artificial neural networks (ANN), the nonlinear relationship between the image variables and process conditions and the froth flotation grades could be established. Positive results indicate that the addition of image features to process conditions could be used as sufficient input into advanced model based control systems for flotation plants. The origins of the electrorefining process date back to 1869, when the first ER cathodes were produced at Pembrey, South Wales. By the time that Pembrey was closing, Chuquicamata tank house was under construction, initiating in 1915 a long history of electrolytic cathodes production. Initially electrowon cathodes and later electrorefined cathodes were produced. During the history of Chuquicamata tank house, there have been several challenges associated with the quality demanded for electrolytic copper. Among them, the transformation from electrowinning to electrorefining in 1952, the onset of the direct commercialization of ER cathodes and the phase out of wire bars in the 80s, several technological changes including the implementation of permanent cathodes, and certainly the constant increase in complexity of the anodes refined. This paper explores the manner in which Chuquicamata has addressed these challenges and examines its links to process characteristics, which have been necessary to maintain a product quality according to market requirements and a brand, “CCC”, that is widely recognized worldwide. INTRODUCTION Located in the north of Chile, in the Atacama Desert, Chuquicamata is an open pit copper mine that for many years has played a relevant role in the global and local mining industry. Known from prehispanic times, the Chuquicamata deposit was initially developed between 1912 and 1915 by the Chile Exploration Company, the operating company of the Chile Copper Company controlled by the Guggenheim Brothers in the USA (Yeatman, 1916). Officially inaugurated on May 18th, 1915, by the President of Chile who pressed a button in Santiago sending a telegraph signal to the power generation plant specially built in Tocopilla, 1500 km north. It signaled the beginning of generating energy, sending it to Chuquicamata, another 140 km east (“El mineral de Chuquicamata”, 1915), marking the beginning of its industrial operation.

Many of the platinum metal alloys are hot-forged in the early stages of reduction from ingot and substantial quantities of platinum alloys are commercially employed at very high temperatures in ammonia oxidation units, orifices for forming glass rods and fibers and as cathodes in long-life thermionic amplifiers. They are used also for electrical heating resistors, safety blowout disks, thermocouples and crucibles. The tensile properties at elevated temperatures are important in many of these situations but data on the subject are limited. Creep data also are important, but will not be covered at this time. Scope and Conclusions Tensile tests were carried out at room temperature and elevated temperatures up to 1100" C. on previously well annealed samples of platinum. palladium and several of their important alloys with compositions shown in Table 1. The results are presented graphically in Figs. 1 to 4. The tensile strengths of platinum and the platinum-base alloys (with the exception of the 10 per cent rhodium-platinum alloy) at 1100" C. are from 16.6 to 18.8 per cent of the strengths of the same alloys (well annealed) at room temperature. The strength ratio of the 10 per cent rhodium-platinum alloy is 22.3 per cent, which is appreciably higher than that of the other materials tested. The tensile strengths of palladium and the palladium alloy at 1100" C. are from 10 to 11.2 per cent of the room-temperature values. The elongations of platinum and its alloys tend to increase at temperatures above 600" to 800" C., while the two samples of pure palladium show a maximum at 600" C.

A pyrite flotation concentrate assaying 0·065 oz/ton gold was investigated to determine the mode of occurrence of the gold. Ftom cyanidation and acid leaching experiments it was concluded that O· 02-0· 03 oz/ton goldwas in solid solution in pyrite and the balance of the gold was finely dispersed as grains throughout the pyrite.Autoradiography and electron-probe examination of possible areas in briquetted concentrate did not detect any grains of gold. Neutron irradiation and gamma spectrometry confirmed on 100 mg samples the fire assays obtained on 1 assay ton samples.Oxidation to hematite and reduction to magnetite at 600°C made practically the whole of the gold extractable by cyanide. This technique could be of major significance for gold ores which contain a substantial amount of "refractory" gold.

amounted to about 2000 metric tons. The total output is increasing from year to year. Marine salt is now produced in Haiti in quantity sufficient to supply nearly all the requirements of this Republic, so production tax is now collected. Central America Guatemala-The major production of salt in Guatemala is solar salt derived from sea water, but the Indian population prefers salt derived by boiling coastal marine earth. Salt is taxed by the Government. The industry has been beset by controversies in recent years, especially following the revolution of October 1944. The Government issued a decree in August 1940 designed to control production and price of salt. The creation of a salt consortium was provided for and marketing was to be governed by production quotas. It is understood that the Government pool was later dissolved and the industry is now under older laws whereby production and sales have no limits. South America Panama-Output of salt in Panama in a very recent year was 11,000 net tons of solar-evaporated sea salt. A Government bank is in charge of output and distribution of the product. Colombia-Rock-salt deposits are known in five places-Zipaquira, Nemocon, and Sesquile, in the Department of Cundinamarca, the Cumural y Upin near Restrepo, and San Miguel y Barital, near Medina in Meta Intendency. The latter deposit never has been worked on account of its inaccessibility. Saline springs are worked in four locations. The largest producer among marine salinas is Manare but it is now planned to make Bahia Honda the largest. Some evaporated salt is made in vacuum pans. The deposits at Zipaquira, Nemocon, and Sesquile are believed to occur in the domal type of deposit. All the salt resources are under Government control. Venezuela-The salt industry in Venezuela is under Government control and is taxed. Taxes in recent years, however, have been reduced for salt used in curing hides and salting meats, fish and fish products. Production has approximated 25,000 metric tons yearly but may now be considerably above that figure. The basin on the peninsula of Araya, State of Sucre, which at present is the only important source of salt, could produce at least 175,000 metric tons if more ground were provided-a larger supply than the entire country could consume. This unique landlocked basin of nearly 1000 acres lies 12 ft below sea level. Ecuador-Salt is a Government monopoly in Ecuador and is produced chiefly by solar evaporation close to the shore. "The Young-Davidson mine is in the southeastern part of Powell township, in the district of Matachewan. It is 32 miles southwest of Kirkland Lake, 48 miles southeast of Timmins, and 25 miles by road Northwest of Elk Lake. The Young-Davidson and its neighbour, the Matachewan Consolidated mine, are the two present producing properties in the district. The Matachewan area is the southwestern extension of the Kirkland Lake belt or 'break'. The Young-Davidson mine since coming into production in 1934 has been operated by Hollinger Consolidated Gold Mines, Limited. ""Desultory prospecting(1) has been carried on in the Matachewan area from time to time since the discovery in 1906 of silver in James township at Elk Lake, and some gold has been found in the southeastern part of Alma township and in the central part of Cairo township. The first real interest in the area, however, was started by Jake Davidson's discovery in 1916 of gold on Davidson creek, on what is now part of the Young-Davidson property, and by Sam Otisse's discovery shortly afterwards on claims a short distance to the east, now part of the Matachewan Consolidated property. In subsequent years both of these properties were investigated by various companies; the Young-Davidson chiefly by the Porcupine Gold fields Development and Finance Company, Limited, and the Matachewan Canadian by the Colorado-Ontario Development Company, Limited, which in 1919 was reorganized under the name of Matachewan Gold Mines, Limited. Work was discontinued as the ore was considered too low in grade to be mined"". However, in 1933 Hollinger Consolidated Gold Mines, Limited, undertook to bring the property into production and this became a reality in 1934.The total production to the end of year 1945 was 319,185.59 oz. gold and 73,541.94 oz. silver from 3,228,845 tons of ore. This represents an average grade of $3.67, including exchange and premiums."

Keywords: Mixed extractant, Copper, Cobalt, Nickel, Synergistic effect During separation process of copper and cobalt from nickel sulphate solution, the effects of constitutions and compositions of mixed extractant D2EHPA and PC88-A or Cyanex 272, has been studied. In one step extraction cycle, the following results are obtained:[Ni]/[Co]>4000 and [Ni]/[Cu]>40000 in nickel sulphate solution, [Co]/[Ni]>1000 and [Co]/[Cu]>30000 in cobalt chlorinate solution, [Cu]/[Ni]>10000 and [Cu]/[Co]>200 in copper sulphate solution. It was elucidated that the above-mentioned synergistic mixtures can effectively separate cobalt and copper from nickel sulphate acid solution and achieve a greater synergistic effect.

Most pressure oxidation operations introduce oxygen through a large multi-use nozzle in the vapour space of the autoclave. Sparge pipes extend inside the vessel to the point of discharge below the compartment agitator. However, two zinc pressure leach operations have successfully used a bottom entry oxygen sparge system for a number of years. Recently, the concept has been used in a whole ore gold pressure oxidation operation as well as a copper pressure leach plant. Both of the latter operations also introduce cooling water for temperature control through the same sparge pipe. This paper addresses the benefits of the bottom entry system with regards to autoclave performance and the positive effects on agitator performance.

A technique is described which simplifies the standard procedure for measuring the Bond work index of a specific ore and illustrates how to overcome the strict requirements regarding feed size distribution normally encountered in operating plants. Actual results obtained from various process streams in a copper concentrator are presented and the grindability data are discussed in relation to the observed plant performance. This type of information can be used to gain a better understanding of plant behavior and to assist in the evaluation of plant modifications and process control studies.

In the framework of the Specific Programme: ?Promoting Competitive and Sustainable Growth? a detection system was designed and developed in order to provide an added value service beyond standard instrumentation. In the hydrocarbon industry it will be possible for the first time to detect in a pulse regime, two types of radiation emissions using a single device. This means that any saturation of hydrocarbons can be detected, irrespective of the degree of formation water mineralization, which is a major limitation on currently available neutron-gamma tools, where the formation water has a low mineralization.

The present study examined a process for precious metal recovery (silver and gold) from difficult minerals which exhibit refractory characteristics to cyanidation and ammonium thiosulfate leaching (low extraction and high consumption of leaching agent). It is well known that mangano-argentiferous minerals are mainly composed of manganese, silver, gold, and iron. In this research, a mineral sample from Monte del Favor mine, located in Hostotipaquillo, Jalisco, Mexico, was physically and chemically characterized by X-ray powder diffraction (XRPD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), fire assay, and atomic absorption spectroscopy (AAS). Two-stage leaching was carried out: first to eliminate manganese from the sample using sodium sulfite (Na2SO3) as a reductive reagent and sulfuric acid (H2SO4) and a second stage to dissolve silver and gold with sodium hypochlorite (NaClO) and hydrochloric acid (HCl); the results show extraction around 96% for Mn and 98.73% and 83%of Ag and Au, respectively. The usefulness of high acidity and Na2SO3 to obtain good results in Mn and Ag leaching is discussed along with the roles that HCl and NaClO play in the dissolution of Ag and Au values.

Meldon Quarry is a seemingly rare occurrence of acid rock drainage (ARD) in a quarrying operation.4 With surface waters discharging to a tributary of a salmon-bearing river, it is subject to stringent discharge conditions. The quarry predates effective environmental management, and preventative, control and treatment measures were not implemented until relatively recently. However, retrospectively implementing standard preventative approaches at the site is costly, technically difficult and of uncertain benefit. This paper overviews the recent site history and introduces data from a demonstration by KEECO (UK) Limited of its Silica Micro Encapsulation (SME) water treatment technology.

A general method-of-lines numerical approach for modeling gas driven fractures has been developed and tested. The numerical solutions agree very well with known similarity solutions for laminar and turbulent flow. Acceptable accuracy is obtained with a very few numerical grid points and with modest execution times. The model has also been checked against the results of several field tests, in which air was used to drive axisymmetric fractures into permeable tunnel-bed tuff.

The Managalase area is remote and little visited by geologists or prospectors. Yet it holds the key to the tectonics and petrology of this part of Papua. The eastern Managalase plateau (M, Figure 1) lies between the Hydrographers andesite volcano (H) and Sesara shoshonite volcano (S) to the south of Popondetta on the Papua Peninsular. It contains over 30 small volcanic centres in an area of only 400 km2 . To the south and west lies the basic-utrabasic belt (B-UB) of the Morobe arc. This is the leading edge of oceanic plate obducted over the Owen Stanley Metamorphics during the lower Eocene time. To the east and southeast lies the Cape Vogel geosyncline where the western end of the Woodlark basin spreading centre enters mainland Papua. The extension of the spreading centre as a suture might pass as far as the southern margin of the Musa Coastal plain. A new pattern of plate tectonic motions has been determined by the global positioning system and the southern margin of the Woodlark plate has been redefined (Tregoning et al, 1998; Taylor, Goodliffe and Martinez, et al, 1999). The Managalase plateau is margined by two inferred faults. These outline a cusp protruding from the main basic-ultrabasic belt where these rocks are near the surface. The westerly arm of the cusp passes through the centres of the Hydrographers and Mount Lamington andesitic volcanoes. Mount Lamington overlies Quaternary alluvium and underlying Tertiary sediments (Arculus et al, 1983) but members of the basic-ultrabasic belt crop out on the southern flanks. The easterly arm of the cusp is an inferred shear zone (and ? fault) connecting up with the terminus of the suture on the Musa coastal plain. Movements on the two faults forming the cusp are thought to have produced the conjugate N-S, E-W faults on the plateau (Ruxton, 1966). To the east, and isolated, are the two large andesitic stratovolcanoes of Mounts Victory (V) and Trafalgar (T) which together form Cape Nelson. Mount Victory was last active in the 1890s. The Waiowa shoshonitic volcano explosion centres (W), last active in 1943 - 1944, lie near the suture adjacent to the actively rising Goropu mountains. Extension in these mountains is clearly demonstrated by the soil profiles being skeletal along a bounding fault and ageing uphill. The incision of small parallel ravines also dig deeper further upslope from the fault. To the south-east of Mount Suckling (K) the Dayman Dome is also an expanding mass. The Owen Stanley fault is parallel, and located to the south of the suture. The Mesozoic metamorphics form the backbone of the Papuan Peninsula. The intramontane Musa Trough is thought to date from the mid-Tertiary. At the eastern end of the trough Pleistocene and Recent ultrabasic breccias and alkali basalt crop out (Green, 1961).

The City of KalgoorlieBoulder is situated approximately 600 kilometres to the east of Perth, and as the major regional centre of the Eastern Goldfields, supporting a population of approximately 25 000. The formation of Kalgoorlie Consolidated Gold Mines in 1989 brought the existing operating entities adjacent to the city under common ownership and management. The Joint Venturers forming the management company are Homestake Gold of Australia and Gold Mines of Kalgoorlie (a Normandy/Poseidon company).This traditional underground mining centre has been worked since 1893, yielding 40.5 million ounces of gold ore with an average head grade of TEN grams per tonne. Historically the heart of the operation has been the famous Golden We located on the Eastern perimeter of the city, in the area known as Fimiston. The other significant operations that form KCGM are the Mt Percy Open Pit and the Mt Charlotte Underground Operation.
