In talking with a good many people, I have discovered that concrete is being used A good deal for a wide variety of oils ranging from 14° to as high as 40° Bé., especially, by some of the western railroads:, If any member has had experience, in storing gasoline in concrete, I should like to learn of it. KNAPP, Ardmore Pa.).-I have had considerable experience in building masonry tanks for gas Holders. I do not believe it is possible to build a concrete or masonry tank of any kind. With hydraulic cement, mortar, which will be absolutely water-tight, unless the bottom and inner wall, after completion are waterproofed with some impervious material. The same will be true of oil tanks, the bottom and inner face of which must be made impervious to oil. Masonry tanks are intended to be sunk in the ground. All that the wall of the tank then amounts to is a retaining wall to keep the excavation in shape and to receive an impervious coating. The bottom of, a; tank, when empty, must be protected by a relief valve from any hydraulic: pressure acting from below. At ordinary prices, for sheets, a tank 100 ft. diam by 20 ft. deep can be built of steel much quicker and cheaper than of masonry. Several years, ago I saw very large oil storage tank under construction in California the bottom and sides being concrete. The sides were, sloped at about the single of repose for the material excavated: If you build a steel oil tank, you can get. .men for the work who do nothing else, and you, are likely to get a satisfactory job; but if you wish to build a concrete or masonry tank it is almost: impossible to find men skilled in building absolutely water-tight masonry Work. The fundamental principles by which bismuth may be removed from lead by pyrometallurgical processes are enumerated. Qualitative discussion of the phase diagrams concerned is followed by presentation of quantitative diagrams. Brief mention is made of the practical aspects. Data presented show how chemical lead (<0.005 pct Bi) may be produced by the Jollivet, Dittmer, and Kroll-Betterton processes. BISMUTH is an element whose properties are very similar to those of lead, and its minerals are associated to a greater or lesser extent with nearly all the major lead ore deposits of the world. In consequence, the lead produced contains bismuth unless a special debismuthizing process is practiced. There does not appear to be any published comprehensive review of the effect of bismuth as an impurity on the properties of lead, and there is some uncertainty as to the beneficial or detrimental effects of small amounts of bismuth in lead used for particular applications. Standard specifications of most countries stipulate a maximum bismuth content of 0.005 pct for chemical lead. With one exception, this specification is met only by lead producers whose ores are relatively bismuth-free, or whose refineries are electrolytic. In lead for certain applications a higher bismuth content is preferred by some fabricators.&apos; In contrast to the refining for silver, copper, and antimony, the refining for bismuth does not usually result in a large overalil economic gain from the sale of byproduct. Thus, debismuthizing is customarily practiced only if market conditions demand a lead with a bismuth content lower than that produced by classical refining; i.e., softening, desilverizing, and zinc refining. Until this century, debismuthizing was carried out only a:; an incidental result of desilverizing, as later described. This century has seen the development of the Betts electrolytic process—the only successful one of many electrolytic processes proposed and patented —and a number of precipitation processes based on the pioneering work of Kroll,&apos; although only one of these, the Kroll-Better ton process,&apos; is in wide commercial use today. It is proposed in this paper to deal only with the pyrometallurgical processes, excluding those based on aqueous electrolysis. Historical Background Prior to 1833 silver (and incidentally bismuth) could not be removed from lead. To recover silver from rich bullion, the only course available to lead refineries was to cupel the bullion, forming a slag of litharge. The first slag tappings or skimmings, on reduction, yielded soft lead of very low silver and bismuth contents. Intermediate skimmings yielded a lead of somewhat higher silver and bismuth contents, which could if desired be recupelled. The last skimmings yielded a litharge very high in bismuth, which could by successive oxidation and reduction cycles be separated into high purity bismuth, and lead returns. This oxidation reduction process, with modern operating techniques, can still be used today to produce a portion of a lead refinery&apos;s output of very low bismuth content, as discussed later. In 1833 Pattinsone discovered that lead bullion could be purified of silver and bismuth by fractional crystallization, the primary lead crystals formed by partial freezing being purer than the melt. "Abstract: The paper describes a large innovative project completed in 2012-20123 by Trevi Group, to develop equipment capable to install ultra-deep diaphragm wall. The project highlights the capacity of SOILMEC to design and build a new hydromill able to reach an unprecedented depth of 250 m, including new devices for monitoring and correct the verticality. The entire project can take advantage of the long and solid experience matured by Trevi and Rodio (now part of Trevi Group), developing in house or, else, select the elements necessary for a high quality product in the ground.The paper describes the results of different systems used to monitor and control the verticality and the twist of panel during excavation, together with the method used to pour concrete. Finally, the results of verification coring and lab tests on concrete samples recovered at various depths are discussed. The test field has been supervised by representatives of three of the major Italian Universities, and lasts almost one year from August 2012 to June 2013.The verification holes made use of an innovative combination of directional drilling and coring, to check the quality of the plastic concrete for the full length of the panel. The data confirmed that the test panel has high quality concrete, meeting or exceeding to the prefixed requirements.With this test, super-deep cut-off walls reaching depths of 250 m have become a reality. This would change the perspectives of dam engineering both for existing dams rehabilitation and for new dams design and construction. With the execution of this test panel, the technology of milled concrete cutoffs has made a ”quantum leap”, pushing the limit of practicable dams."

Beginning in 2010, a scientifically-founded water spray system for continuous miners (CMs) has been in development at Southern Illinois University that significantly reduces respirable dust exposure for workers in the face area (patent pending). It includes engineered sprays around the cutting drum, outer bitring sprays, chassis sprays and side cutter boom sprays. About 3.6?4.5 m behind these sprays are additional sprays that cover the area between the CM chassis and the mine roof and ribs. The innovative spray system uses approximately the same volume of water as spray systems currently used on CMs and with similar operating pressures. The innovative spray system design also takes into consideration coal dust wettability. An Illinois mine decided to implement these concepts on a CM during the rebuild stage. Dust control performance of the rebuilt CM was evaluated using gravimetric dust sampling and real-time monitoring with multiple personal dust monitors. The average results based on gravimetric sampling of about 105 cuts show about 30 and 20% reduction in dust exposure for the miner operator and the haulage unit operator, respectively. Visibility in the mining areas was also significantly improved. Since the initial demonstration, the coal company has implemented the system on all of their operating CMs.

The pumping of water from mines in the Central Witwatersrand by J. A. TYSER, Pr. Eng., B.Sc. (Min.) (Associate) This paper describes a system for the removal of underground water in the mines of the Central Witwatersrand, some of which are defunct. The water is pumped by a pump station on 24 level at E.R.P.M. to a surface lime plant and then to a surface treatment plant, where it is treated so that it meets the specification of the Department of Water Affairs relating to the deposition of water in public streams.

"The paper describes in general the objectives, goals as well as theoretical background of "METSI"-project proposal submitted to German BMBF (Federal Ministry of Education and Research). The METSI project is a starting point for technology and know-how transfer of German water management and water treatment technologies to South African Mining industry. "METSI" is Setswana, one of the eleven official languages in South Africa, and means "water". It stands also for "Management System for the Implementation of Environmentally Sound Water Supply Technologies in South African Mining Areas with Involvement of all Relevant Stakeholders". The project focuses on development, design and implementation of mathematical models that consolidate and evaluate existing data and generate substantiated projections of "water" amount and quality. METSI covers a wide range of scientific, technical, social as well as economic questions related to "water in mining"."

PREPARED BY THE PETROLEUM DEPARTMENT OF THE BOARD OF TRADE, LONDON THERE is very little to add to the report printed last year by the Institute as no developments of importance have taken place during the year. The following is a brief note on the various countries: GREAT BRITAIN The United Kingdom is a very small producer of petroleum, practically the whole output being derived from the oil-shale deposits of the Lothians of Scotland. The crude oil produced by distillation of shale in 1922 amounted to 180,000 tons, and the estimated production for 1923 is 207,000 tons. Because of the recent- decline in the market value of petroleum products, the production of oil, from shale can no longer be regarded as remunerative, and the future outlook for the industry is serious unless prices recover. As regards naturally occurring petroleum, the drilling operations undertaken by the Government have now been closed down. Out of the eleven borings undertaken only one, that at Hardstoft in Derbyshire, proved to be a producing well; its output was 125 tons in 1922 and 136 tons in 1923.

THE Huff electrostatic plant of the United States Smelting Company operated in conjunction with its wet concentrator at Midvale, Utah, was the second plant of substantial size installed using the Huff process, and the first plant to be put in operation on the so-called Western complex ores. In spite of the machinery being of early design and consequently embracing many of the mechanical weaknesses incident to a pioneer plant the mill has operated steadily and uniformly since the summer of 1909, about five years now, without any material change other than some re-arrangement of the machinery for better handling of the sizes. The ore, at present coming almost entirely. from the company&apos;s mines in Bingham, is of practically the same composition as that upon which the plant was first put in operation. The crude ore, consisting of the sulphides of copper, lead, zinc, and iron, and containing small amounts of gold and silver, is brought by train and delivered to the hoppers of the wet concentrator, where by jig and table treatment, there are produced a shipping lead concentrate, a tailing and a middling product, the latter being conveyed in push cars to the adjoining electrostatic mill. The crude ore delivered to the wet concentrator contains from 6 to 9.5 per cent. zinc. At times the plant is used also for the treatment of custom ores from the Bingham district and elsewhere, and at such times the results of the plant vary according to the material in use, but as by far the larger portion of the product is that from the company&apos;s own mines, the results given below are fairly indicative of the general work obtained. The accompanying diagram illustrates graphically the flow of the ore through the electrostatic mill. The middling coming from the wet mill containing from 15 to 18 per cent. moisture is hoisted while on the cars by an elevator, and delivered from the top of the elevator to a hopper over the drier. The drier first installed was of too low capacity to take care of the moisture present in the tonnage to which the mill was later

In Silver Plume, Colo., there is a bachelor miner who offers individualized tours of his mine, The Silver Cloud. It is an interesting tour because he drove the mine himself and the view from the shack up there is spectacular. Beside that, he will probably invite you into his kitchen to sit around the old cook stove and drink coffee. When Andy first started his tour business he put a sign on the main street to advertise the fact. The sign read in part: "Women not welcome, but they will be tolerated at $3.00 a head”- the usual fee is $2.50. The sign lasted about 48 hours. Andy had to take it down because "all the ladies in town got mad at me. Now I take them all for $2.50 right across the board," he says. The mining industry is not only reticent about hiring women but traditionally does not even permit women to enter some mines. It would appear, what with the recent action on an equal-rights-for- women amendment in Congress, that we may be wise to examine the prospect.

"SUMMARYThe Ringelmann Smoke Chart fulfills an important need in smoke abatement work and certain problems in the combustion of fuels. A knowledge of its history and method of preparation is, therefore, of interest to many. Since instructions on its use are not shown on the recent edition of the chart, those included in this revision of the previous information circular, by Rudolf Kudlich, now are a necessary complement to the chart. More detail regarding the use of the chart is included than was given in the earlier manuscript.INTRODUCTIONThe Ringelmann Smoke Chart, giving shades of gray by which the density of columns of smoke rising from stacks may be compared, was developed by a Professor Ringelmann of Paris. Maximilian Ringelmann, born in 1861, was professor of agricultural engineering at l'Institute National Agronomique and Director de la Station d'Essais de Machines in Paris in 1888, and held those positions for many years thereafter.The chart apparently was introduced into the United States by William Kent in an article published in ""Engineering News"" of November 11, 1897, with a comment that he had learned of it in a private communication from a Bryan Donkin of London. It was said to have come into somewhat extensive use in Europe by that time. Kent proposed in 1899 that it be accepted as the standard measure of smoke density in the standard code for power-plant testing that was being formulated by the American Society of Mechanical Engineers.The Ringelmann Chart was used by the engineers of the Technologic Branch of the Federal Geological Survey (which later formed the nucleus of the present Bureau of Mines) in their studies of smokeless combustion beginning at St. Louis in 1904, and by 1910 had been recognized officially in the smoke ordinance for Boston passed by the Massachusetts Legislature."

The Federal Bureau of Mines has conducted research in support of the National Aeronautical and Space Administration&apos;s (NASA) Apollo program to acquire fundamental scientific and engineering knowledge of lunar-mineral resources for NASA&apos;s Office of Advanced Research and Technology. Equipment and techniques were developed to conduct soil shear tests in a simulated lunar environment. Shear tests performed with this equipment in ultrahigh vacuum and controlled laboratory atmosphere showed that simulated lunar soil increased in strength in the simulated lunar environment.

Most of the existing models of the mechanisms of drilling and cutting processes are oversimplified in both stress state and failure criterion. On the other hand numerical modelling techniques are a more versatile method with great potential for development. In reviewing drillability and predicting performance of excavation machines the empirical tests, which simulate the physical breakage action in excavating processes are seen to be the best in terms of penetration rate predictability. Future methods of determination of drillability should concern the breakage characteristics and rock abrasivity involved in the two basic types of attack, i.e., percussive and rotary drilling.

An industry-wide demand for bigger and more efficient trucks, with their supposed economies of scale, is well established. Some trucks have been, and often are brought "off the shelf," with the manufacturer offering only certain minor options, much as in the private automobile industry. The market is well established; there is keen competition; in recent years there have been few significant changes, and few are expected. With large trucks (100-ton-capacity and over), however, the situation is different. Here, with an individual truck costing several hundred thousand dollars, there is an ever in- creasing trend to engineer a truck for a specific application. The body will be designed and sized for the material that the truck will carry; the engine and transmission will be geared to the haul profile, and tires will be designed to suit road conditions and work requirements. Early Truck Development Haulage trucks designed expressly for open-pit mine service were introduced during the 1930&apos;s. The first models to arrive on the scene hauled about 15 tons, and easily outperformed the modified highway trucks that had been used for mine haulage up to that time.

For several hundred years the petroleum industry has flourished in Burma and at the close of the eighteenth century there were over five hundred producing wells in the Yenangyaung field. These were laboriously dug by hand and were exceedingly primitive, yet even today a small part of India&apos;s total production is obtained from hand-dug wells. The Indian Empire, the cradle of the oil industry, today produces but an unimpressive fraction of the world&apos;s supply of petroleum, not because the size of her contribution has diminished, but because it has remained more or less stationary while other countries have far outstripped her during the prodigious increase in the world&apos;s production of petroleum in recent years. Though for the past 10 years the total production in India has been remarkably constant, it has become increasingly difficult to maintain this output and at any rate from the older fields a slow decline may be anticipated unless new productive horizons are discovered. Production figures for the 10 years 192&1929 (the last year for which figures are available) are given by fields in Table 1. Crudes of Burma and Assam The bulk of India&apos;s production comes from the Yenangyaung and Singu fields, from which the crudes are very similar, the only important difference being that the oil from the Singu-Yenangyat structure contains a higher percentage of lighter fractions. The Burma crudes resemble that of the Panhandle of Texas and have a high content of solid paraffin, though strictly speaking the oil is of mixed base with a low content of asphaltum. With the exception of the negligible production from Sabe, the Burma crudes do not require dehydration; the sulfur content is very low and is innocuous. A small amount of naphthenic acids occurs in the kerosene and intermediate oil fractions while the lubricating fraction is practically free from acid. The ash content is low and the average A.P.I. gravity of mixtures of Yenangyaung and Singu oil is 36.4. The maintenance system for underground mobile equipment at Cobar Mines Pty. Ltd. has been modified from that originally planned as a result of experience gained in operating the equipment.Downtime due to breakdowns has been reduced by improvement of vehicle servicing and overhaul procedures.Frequency of breakdowns can be reduced by training operating and maintenance personnel to a high standard, ensuring adequate numbers of tradesmen and supervisors, good maintenance facilities and communications, a well designed mine layout, and a comprehensive stock of spare parts.A maintenance and downtime summary is compiled for each four-week operating period and this is useful in highlighting particular problems where corrective action must be taken.

Barrick Gold Corporation?s wholly owned subsidiary, Barrick (Granny Smith) Pty. Ltd. operates the Granny Smith operation in Western Australia and has been operating a SAG/ball mill (SABC) circuit for a number of years processing a blend of secondary crushed, open pit and underground material. With closure of the open pit in 2008, Granny Smith was considering different options to process underground only material at a lower throughput. Using the existing equipment available on site, a number of circuits were evaluated by Metso Process Technology & Innovation (PTI) through modelling and simulation. A single stage SAG mill circuit was selected based on power requirements and operating efficiency. In April 2008, Granny Smith started operating their SAG mill in single stage, processing primary crushed feed and using their existing pebble crusher for scats. Smaller cyclones were used to control the final grind size. PTI surveyed the new single stage circuit in July 2008 under normal and high rock load conditions to show the effect on final grind size. Granny Smith continued to operate this circuit until the end of 2009, when alternate feed sources resulted in a return to the complete SABC circuit at a higher tonnage once again. The variable speed, single stage SAG mill proved itself to be very efficient and flexible option to process the hard underground Wallaby Deeps material. This paper will review circuit performance following the conversion to single stage in comparison with the full SABC circuit.

Bardon Trimount Inc., a large producer of aggregate, crushed stone, and concrete, was experiencing significant public opposition to its five quarries in the Boston area. It was believed by the authors that this opposition could be significantly lessened if the total number of blasts per week were reduced. Although the blasting company at these quarries, Austin Powder Company, contended that this could easily and safely be accomplished by increasing the size of the blasts, regulations precluded this alternative by limiting the total amount of explosives that could be used per blast.

The Mining Division of Utah Power and Light Company is located in the coal fields of southeastern Utah -main office in Huntington, Utah. The Division will produce 6.5 million tons of low sulfur steam coal in 1988, making UP&L the largest underground mining operation west of the Mississippi. Coal is mined from three underground mines utilizing continuous miner and longwall mining methods. All coal produced by the Mining Division is utilized at UP&L&apos;s two largest steam-electric power plants, the Hunter and Huntington plants with a combined capability of 1,995,000 Kw. At UP&L we believe that to achieve success a company must have clearly defined goals which are understood, communicated and shared at each level of operation. We have also found from experience that a safe operation is generally an efficient and productive operation. As a Division, we have established a goal to achieve the safest, most efficient operation in the country. This is an ambitious goal. To achieve such a goal requires real commitment and a safety/training program capable of achieving needed results. The following is an overview of the program we have established at UP&L which has enabled us to reduce our accident frequency rate from over 40 in 1980 to 8.00 at present, as illustrated in Figure 1.

This paper describes in detail various problems concerning the construction of a pile-raft foundation supporting a 42-storey tower block. The subsurface generally consists of highly weathered sedimentary rock. A comprehensive instrumentation program is implemented to monitor the behaviour of the foundation system throughout the construction period of the superstructure. Instrumentation observations are highlighted in the second half of the paper.
