A process was developed based on the thermal hydrolysis and precipitation of iron from solutions resulting from the leaching of zinc plant residue. A study was made of the hydrolysis of iron, at temperatures in the range 140-220°C, in both pure solutions of ferrie sulphate and in leach solutions derived from plant spent electrolyte.At 200°C hydrolysis of pure ferric sulphate solutions results in the precipitation of ferric oxide, Fe2O3, at low acid. concentrations, and a basic salt, Fe2O3.2S03.H20, at hIgher acid concentrations. At 180°C ferric oxide is precipitated at low acid concentrations, but at higher acidities. carphosiderite, 3Fe203.4SO.3.9H20, is the stable phase. Frequently a mIxture of ferric oxide and carphosldente IS produced at 180°C, the ratio of phases being dependent on the non-equilibrium experimental conditions.With solutions derived from plant spent electrolyte hydrolysIS at elevated temperatures results in the precipitation of jarosite compounds of the type NaFe3(S04)2(OH)6 The precipitation of natrojarosite jarosite, and ammonio-jarosite was studied in detail. Temperature, free acidity, and the concentration of sodium potassium, and ammonium ions are critical factors which affect the extent of precipitation.A process based on ammonio-jarosite precipitation was tested in a pilot plant.An alternative method of iron removal based on the addition of zinc oxide calcine, to neutralize excess acidity, and the precipitation of ferric oxide was also tested in the pilot plant. Methane drainage by cross-measure boreholes on retreat longwall faces can be a viable alternative to the vertical gob degas boreholes under favorable circumstances. The research was done in a mine working Pittsburgh coal seam in northern West Virginia under USBM Cooperative Agreement No. 14-09-0050-3252. The study was the first application of this technique to Pittsburgh coal seam. A total of 14 small diameter, inclined boreholes were drilled over a retreat longwall panel from gate roads, to intersect the overlying coal seams. All boreholes were manifolded to a pipeline and the gob gas was extracted by a surface exhaust fan. The methane capture ratio was poor at 7% to 18% at various stages of the longwall panel. A vertical gob degas borehole captured an additional 20% gas. Poor results were due to premature failures of the cross-measure boreholes leading to air leakage. For better performance, the boreholes should be drilled from a point 30 to 45 m (98 to 148 ft) from longwall pillar over the largest chain pillar. The standpipe should be grouted for at least 6 m (20 ft), and the entry containing boreholes and the pipeline must be supported to ensure access for maintenance and optimization of methane capture. Coursing the ventilation air around longwall such that it forces methane migration toward cross-measure boreholes can further improve methane capture. The optimum vertical inclination is 45º ± 10º.

Working in thick coal seams presents many problems, included in these is obtaining the maximum recovery of coal under safe working conditions. In order to obtain maximum extraction it is important to understand the behaviour of pillars left for support purposes. However it is not always the practice to maintain pillar stability it is often required to design for pillar failure. The greatest hazard of pillar mining is uncontrolled pillar collapse. Many major and relatively minor collapses of pillar workings have been recorded in the history of mining. Notable among the collapses was that at Coalbrook Colliery in South Africa in 1960 (Bryan et al 1964). This led to recommendations on the design of bard and pillar workings in South Africa. (Salamon 1967) These design recommendations were based on the statistical analysis of stable and unstable pillar workings and introduced the concept of probability of pillar failure and safety factor. On the basis of this study a safety factor of 1.6 was prescribed for production panels in South Africa. A general review of pillar design procedures, reveals that a new phase of reinterpretation and modification is in progress. This takes into account for instance the effect method of working, whether by conventional drilling and blasting or continuous miner, has on coal pillar strength, and the necessity to review the methods for increasing depth of working. Also, as more is being understood about overall rock mass properties and advanced computer modelling techniques become more readily available, the mine planning engineer is faced with numerous approaches to pillar design.

"Biological cementation of the Mandena heavy mineral sand deposit in Madagascar was causing difficulty in dredge mining and hence in planning and control of production rates. An investigation was initiated to better evaluate the geotechnical properties of the orebody by defining the distribution and geotechnical properties of the cemented strata, in order to generate a site-specific geotechnical model for the deposit. The geotechnical characterization was developed by an integrated approach using several ground investigation techniques such as piezocone (CPTu) testing, geotechnical drilling, standard penetration testing (SPT), as well as laboratory testing. The final outcomes of the investigation included a 3D geotechnical model showing the distribution and extent of the cemented areas, as well as the typical geotechnical parameter ranges associated with each of the defined geotechnical units. The interpretations developed were incorporated into the mine and production planning to ultimately optimize operational planning and control.IntroductionQIT Madagascar Minerals (QMM) is a heavy mineral sand mining operation at Mandena, near Fort Dauphin in Madagascar. During the final planning and commissioning stages of the project, the need to fully characterize the unusual geotechnical conditions was identified and a geotechnical investigation became necessary.Nature of the problemDuring the commissioning phase it was found that mining production was being hampered by biologically cemented/indurated layers encountered within the sands. Closer inspection of the indurated horizons in the dredging face revealed that these layers contain a high loading of bacteria and fungi. It appears that the bacteria produce an extracellular (outside the cell) polysaccharide (i.e. sugar and carbon salts), which form a gelling biofilm to trap nutrients. There are a number of different bacteria. The fungi, on the other hand, produce a network of fibrous strands that bind the sand grains together. Thus both bacteria and fungi probably contribute to the ‘apparent cohesive’ strength or binding of the indurated sand (Lynn, 2008)."

The objective, of the Diesel Emissions Evaluation Program (DEEP)-sponsored project at IncoÆs Stobie mine, was to conduct a long-term field evaluation of selected diesel particulate filter (DPF) systems, available to the underground mining industry. Nine state-of-the-art DPF systems were retrofitted to heavy-duty and light-duty vehicles and were subjected to extensive long-term in-mine evaluation. Periodic efficiency tests were conducted at various stages of the study (in 2001, 2002 and 2004) to establish in-use efficiencies and durabilities of the tested DPF systems. During efficiency tests, the vehicles/engines were operated over several steady-state operating conditions. Various instruments were used to measure particulate and gaseous emissions upstream and downstream of the filter systems. The results were used to assess the effects of the filter systems on the concentrations of diesel particulate matter (DPM), nitric oxide, nitrogen dioxide and carbon monoxide in the vehicle exhaust. Experience with the operational issues related to deployment of the filter systems on underground mining vehicles, coupled with the assessment of the filtration efficiencies, were the primary objectives of the study. The variety of filtration systems and regeneration concepts used in this study offered the opportunity to investigate the advantages and disadvantages of the various types. Some of the major issues studied were criteria for selecting the filter media, means of regeneration, the long-term operational reliability, and the occurrence of unwanted secondary emissions.

Pictured on these pages are the eight RMCMI Scholarship Award Winners for the 1990-1991 year followed by a brief profile. All winners, except John Nixon from Texas, were present as guests of the Institute at the June convention in Keystone, Colorado to receive recognition at the Welcome Session Monday, July 1, 1991. Each state vice president served as the host for the collegiate winner. In addition to receiving a plaque from the Scholarship Chairman, Dr. Donald Gentry, each winner receives $750 tuition credit for the coming academic year. As this is a continuing award, the winners from the previous year will receive another $750 for tuition credit in their senior year if they have maintained good academic standing and are recommended by their university. Criteria for these awards to be made in the spring annually is (1) That the award be made to a sophomore student and used as tuition during the junior year. (2) That the recipient be both a U.S. citizen and a resident of the state involved. (3) That the recipient have good academic standing, be pursuing a degree in a mining related field and have an expressed interest in Western coal as a possible career path. The scholarship program includes curricula other than those in the mining departments, but in the engineering disciplines, such as geology, mineral processing and metallurgy. Contributions to this worthy project are tax deductible to each individual RMCMI member or his firm. This paper will explore the technology behind and applications of smart motor control centers (MCCs) being used today in mineral processing facilities. The two technologies to be discussed are solid-state motor controllers that can be installed in MCCs and the complementary digital communication networks that can transmit operational parameters of the solid-state devices to the supervisory system. The toughness and reliability of solid-state technologies have led to a dramatic increase in their usage throughout the mining industry. Products such as solid-state motor protectors, controllers, and variable frequency drives have demonstrated greater flexibility and performance in a variety of applications than their electromechanical and mechanical counterparts. The three key trends apparent in the solid-state devices are: 1. A shift to smaller, smarter, more integrated devices, which allows a single solid-state device to serve the purpose of multiple electromechanical devices but in a much smaller form factor. 2. Distribution of control logic in motor control devices rather than conveyed through a hard wired connection to a central automation system. 3. Embedded network communication that allows supervisory systems to have an expanded view into critical loads and sensors. In applications, the use of smart actuators and sensors with integral local intelligence and communication allow a supervisory controller to send high level commands and let the smart device coordinate its own work The ability of smart field devices to return noncontrolled, nonpoled information opens a whole array of new capabilities for preventive maintenance and diagnostics and forms the basis for an effective motor management program. The smart motor control devices this paper will explore are the smart motor protectors (SMP), smart motor controllers (SMC), and variable frequency drives (VFD).

The Perth Mint receives gold and silver from various sources for evaluation and refining. The metals are received in many forms and vary widely in assay. Refining is carried out using the Miller Process and the and the resulting market quality bullion is sold in a range of weights and alloys to suit the international bullion market and public demand. INTRODUCTION The Perth Mint was established in the late nineties as a branch of the Royal Mint, London, to refine the gold from the newly established gold- fields in Western Australia. The branch was opened for business in June, 1899. After refining, the bulk of the gold was used in the manufacture of sovereigns and half-sovereigns. Nowadays, although most of the gold received comes from the W.A. goldfields, some gold is deposited by producers in other states and in Papua-New Guinea, as well as scrap and trade wastes from manufacturing jewellers and old jewellery from the general public. Silver is deposited in the form of old silverware, recoveries from-photographic processes etc. Gold or silver may be lodged at the Mint in person, through a bank or other agency or by registered post. Telegraphic advice is usually given when gold is sent by the latter, so that insurance may be effected.

Until a comparatively few years ago, interest in tantalum was limited almost wholly to its scientific investigation, but its extreme resistance to the action of even the strong mineral acids, its great avidity for the common gases, hydrogen, oxygen and nitrogen, and its capacity for transforming alternating to direct current are winning for it a place in our industrial life. Tantalum is not attacked by any single acid except hydrpfluoric, nor is it affected by solutions of alkalies. Aqua regia, which readily dissolves both platinum and gold, has no action on it. This resistance to the common corrosive agents is an outstanding property of tantalum and accounts for many of the applications to which it has been put. When heated, tantalum reacts readily with oxygen and nitrogen and absorbs large volumes of hydrogen, 740 volumes being taken up at a dull red heat. This capacity for absorbing gases is being utilized to an increasing extent in the manufacture of vacuum tubes, in which tantalum is used for the metal parts, especially for grid wire. It is said to be a superior metal for this purpose, particularly in power and sending tubes, because of its low secondary emission. The use of tantalum in the manufacture of electrodes, dishes, spatulas and other laboratory apparatus appears to be fairly steady. There has been some development in its use for dental instruments, surgical tools, pen points, hypodermic needles and acid-proof pumps. Recently it has been used in the manufacture of spinnerets for the rayon industry, of nozzles for the manufacture of artificial casings for sausages and of lining for plant equipment. Tantalum in Electrolysis It has been known for some time that certain substances permit the passage of an alternating current in one direction more readily than in the other. The influence of pulp potential on the flotation behaviour of sulphide minerals in laboratory batch flotation tests is discussed in terms of self-induced flota- tion, collector-induced flotation, and depression.' Assuming that the pulp poten- tial is controlled by the same factors that determine the genuine redox poten- tial, an attempt is made to interpret the experimental results in terms of potential-dependent reactions based on bulk thermodynamic data. Self-induced flotation is displayed by many sulphides in moderately oxidizing solutions but not in reducing solutions. The available evidence suggests that the hydrophobic entity could be sulphur produced by superficial oxidation of the mineral but this has not been established beyond dispute. In general, flotation is observed near the potentials at which sul- phur would be expected to form and the minerals which produce sulphur seem to float the most strongly. Collector-induced flotation is most conveniently studied on minerals which have only slight self-induced floatab- ility. The mineral-collector interaction is potential-dependent hence flotation is generally only observed in limited ranges of potentials. While the general form of the floatability-potential relationship is similar to that predicted from thermody- namic data close correspondence between predicted and experimental results is not always observed.

There is no doubt that simulated ventilation networks must be adequately verified before they can be extrapolated and used for predictive purposes. There are two general approaches as to how the verification can be established and these are summarised as follows; The first approach is to measure all individual branches with trailing hoses or barometers to get individual pressure drop and flow per branch and then calculate individual resistance factors for input into the software. The simulator is run, checking that the output makes general sense (check some sensitivities if possible). The network is now considered as verified. The pressure drop to be measured is relatively small and thus it is inherent that the measured set of individual K factors will be imprecise no matter how much care is taken in the measurements and the resultant simulations will inherit the same problem. In the second approach, the network is assembled using estimated (Atkinson) K factors (based on physical features of airway, past experience and catalogued typical K factors). Only the main primary flow rates are measured and hence the relative distribution of the primary ventilation in the main airways is determined (probably about 10 off primary air flow measurements). Main critical pressure differentials at main and booster fans and across critical doors are measured (probably about 6 off primary pressure differential measurements need to be made). The simulator is run and the computer model is used to iterate and select an updated suite of K factors so that the flow balances and pressure differentials are correctly simulated (typically only 2 or 3 iterations are all that is needed). The network is now considered as verified. The pressure differences to be measured will be substantial in absolute terms and can be measured with high precision. Also, because only primary flows are measured, these will generally be measured at higher air speed points and hence improved relative accuracy. This leads to more accurate simulation results. As partition curves are widely employed to characterize screening efficiency which, by definition, should include a time parameter, it is shown, perhaps for the first time, that time is already included in the partition curves and how. Laboratory and plant results are used to show how screening efficiency depends on feed composition, near-mesh and oversize material and screen motion, and how these factors may combine to give an erroneous result that two identically efficient screens are different and two screens of different efficiency are identical. Reasons are given which show why a renewed interest in screening would benefit not only screen engineers and operators but also those concerned in formulating standard specifications of screen analysis methods.

IN A previous paper1 the authors dealt with the physical properties of cold-rolled and heat-treated Britannia metal of the approximate composition Sn, 91 per cent., Sb, 7 per cent. and Cu, 2 per cent. It was found that cold rolling to more than 50 per cent. reduction produced a continuous softening of the metal when measured by the Brinell machine, whereas the Shore instrument indicated increased hardness; that the strength of the material followed the Brinell hardness and that the metal therefore became weaker the more it was cold-rolled; and further, it was found that hardness and strength could be largely restored to the cold-rolled metal by "baking" for about one hour at any temperature, between 200° and 450° F., the melting point. The higher the baking temperature, the more effective was the heat treatment as far as increased hardness was concerned. It seemed to be of little importance whether the metal was soaked or not at the baking temperature for a great length of time and the rate of cooling seemed to be immaterial. The present paper deals with the same alloy and more particularly with the resistance towards various forms of stress - tensile, bend and deep drawing. The metallography of Britannia metal has in part also been covered and an explanation attempted for the abnormal behavior of this alloy.

FOREWORD In 1974, the Ministry of Housing and Reconstruction (The Client) which subsequently became the Ministry of Development and New Communities of the Government of the Arab Republic of Egypt assigned responsibility to the Arab Contractors (Osman Ahmed Osman and Company) for the design and construction of the tunnels under the Suez Canal. For this project the Arab Contractors of Cairo and Tarmac International of London formed a joint Venture, called Osmac. Sir William Halcrow and Partners of London are responsible for the design of the Ahmed Hamdi Tunnel as a Sub-Contractor to the Contractor. The advisory consultant of the client is a joint Venture between Tippetts-Abbett-McCarthy-Stratton (TAMS) of New York and Arab Consulting Engineers (ACE) of Cairo. INTRODUCTION A site investigation was carried out between Km 141 and Km 150 Suez Canal chainage to determine the ground conditions relevant to design and construction of a road tunnel under the Suez Canal. A feasibility study included aerial surveying, geological mapping and the drilling of 8 boreholes. Detailed investigation included the drilling of 105 boreholes, sampling, piezometer installation, pumping tests, and the digging of trial pits and trial excavations. In-situ work comprised SPT, permeability tests and dilatometer tests. Laboratory testing included soil classification tests, compaction tests, California Bearing Ratio tests, shear strength determination and oedometer consolidation tests as well as chemical analysis of both soil and ground water. The investigation revealed that the ground conditions at the first proposed El Shatt site (Km 148.5) were not favourable for bored tunnelling, whereas they were more favourable at the southern El Shatt site (Km 150.0).

The State of Washington has a federal program that gives the Office of Surface Mining responsibility for assuring the reclamation of lands affected by coal mining. Most of Washington's coal-bearing regions lie west of the Cascade Mountains. The state's coal reserves are estimated at 1.4 billion tons, about 0.3 percent of the nation's total coal reserve. Steeply dipping. minable seams range from 2.5 to 25 feet in thickness. The occurrence of coal in Washington has been documented since the early days of its settlement; at one time, coal production played a significant role in the state's economy. During the late 1800s and early 1900s, coal was second only to lumber in Washington's industrial production. Coal production declined as other sources of energy were developed. By 1959, production was at 200,000 tons. Regulation of the coal mine operations in Washington is conducted by the Office of Surface Mining's Casper, Wyoming, Field Office and its local office in Olympia, Washington. All permit applications and abandoned mine land reclamation are completed by the OSM Western Support Center in Denver, Colorado. Inspections of mine and reclamation sites are conducted by OSM reclamation specialists located in Olympia.

The image-based On-line Particle Size Analyzer (OPSA)system has been developed at the University of Utah to measure particle size distributions under plant conditions where overlapped and segregated particles are being transported on a moving belt conveyor. Evaluation of the OPSA system at several plant sites has been completed. The results show a consistent agreement between the particle size distributions obtained from the OPSA system and those obtained from laboratory screen analysis of belt samples. These results and the stable performance of the OPSA system during the field tests suggest that continuous quality control of crushed products is possible using the OPSA system.

Coal has been mined in the Kailuan mining area for more than 130 years. The remaining reserves consist of, in large part, coals that would have been considered economically unminable or technically not feasible by the previous generations. Some of the current operations have to resort to overmining because the lower seams had been extracted in the past. This paper deals with the feasibility and proper layout of mining roadways of overmining carried out in the No. 5 seam of Qianjiaying coal mine of Kailuan mining area using numerical and physical simulation. FLAC2D was used to investigate the characteristics of stress and displacement in the overburden after extraction of the lower seams. It also analyzed the proper layouts of gateroads in the upper seams, i.e. locating them in the stress-relief zone of the gob so that their stability can be easily maintained. In addition, a two-dimensional physical model was constructed for investigation of damages to the upper seams due to mining of the lower seams. Finally, based on the results of investigations, proper gateroads layout was designed and successful extraction was implemented for panel 1357 in the No.5 seam.

Conventional methods of drill hole site selection are reviewed briefly. Two approaches using geostatistics are then discussed, both of which have been shown to yield improved results. Finally, a branch and bound algorithm is described which will select the best locations for drilling from a user specified number of possible drill sites. Two options are discussed. First, the user can specify a maximum drilling investment or a maximum number of drill holes and the program will select the locations yielding the minimum estimation variance. This amounts to getting the most for a given investment. Alternatively, a maximum tolerable estimation variance can be specified and the program will select the number and location of the drill holes to obtain the desired information at a minimum cost. Another benefit of the approach is the quantification of the tradeoffs between investment and information obtained.

The immediate roof at the test site consisted of laminated clay shale that is likely to be susceptible to weathering. With seasonal dry-wet cycles in the mine ventilation air, the roof in the intake air would deteriorate and lose integrity over time. In many instances, the weathering-prone roof would gradually scale off piece by piece between bolts and over the entry corners. In some long-term entries, roof weathering could develop up to 2-3 ft deep with columns of bolted roof hanging under the upper intact roof. If wire mesh is used, the roof bags down and reduces the entry height, and the weight of the bagged roof tends to pull the bolts out and poses a safety hazard. An effective measure is always sought to support this type of weak roof that is sensitive to moisture degradation. One solution is to seal the roof shortly after entry development to prevent moisture penetration so that roof integrity can be maintained for the long term. In this application, a polymer-based sealing material was tested in the Rockspring mine for weathering protection and reinforcement. The material is a one-component polymer powder for spray application onto the roof and rib. The sealant material is mixed with water in the spraying nozzle to apply to the roof and rib as a paste. The product sets within 5-10 minutes and forms a membrane as thin as about 1/8-in. The membrane will quickly develop tensile and bonding strength within minutes and completely cure within a few days. Through sealing, bonding and lateral reinforcement, the integrity of the weak roof can be maintained. The material has been tried in a long-term evaluation over several months in a set of main entries in the Rockspring mine owned and operated by Rockspring Development, Inc., affiliate of Foundation Coal. Preliminary evaluation has shown that the material is an effective and economical solution to ensuring the long-term stability of weathering-prone roof.

"The kinetics of chalcopyrite leaching in acidic ferric/ferrous sulfate media under atmospheric conditions in the presence of pyrite has been investigated. It has been found that pyrite samples from different sources affect the rate of chalcopyrite leaching differently. A strong correlation between the amount of silver associated with the pyrite and its effectiveness has been noted. In this study, improvement of the catalytic properties of pyrite such that all pyrite samples accelerate the rate of copper extraction regardless of their sources is demonstrated, and a detailed discussion of the mechanisms involved in the process of chalcopyrite leaching in the presence of silverenhanced pyrite is presented. INTRODUCTIONIt is well known that chalcopyrite resists leaching in sulfate media. It has been proved that pyrite facilitates the leaching of chalcopyrite (Berry et al., 1978; Dixon et al., 2008; Mehta and Murr, 1983; Muñoz et al., 2008; Nowak et al., 1984, Tshilombo, 2004). Considering the catalytic effects of pyrite on accelerating the kinetics of chalcopyrite leaching, Dixon and Tshilombo (2005) have developed a new process, known as Galvanox™, which has several advantages over other hydrometallurgical processes. Galvanox™ runs under atmospheric conditions, so it requires only low-cost leaching tanks. The sulfur yield at this temperature is high (>95%) which leads to low oxygen consumption and low sulfuric acid generation.
