IN gathering material for this book, I have made extensive use of the archives of Phelps Dodge, contemporary news- papers, and a wide range of secondary sources. Two manuscripts-one on the history of Phelps Dodge by Arthur Train, Jr., and John L. Lawler, the other a biography of William E. Dodge by Richard Lowitt-have been of the greatest value. This paper describes an integrated procedure for the very short term production planning of an open pit and the execution of this plan: the truck dispatching. Integration of plan and dispatch means that the plan is realistic so that its objectives can be realized by the dispatch. This realism is obtained by supplying the plan optimization, which involves mixed integer programming, linear programming and non-linear programming, with experimental O.R. models of waiting and blending. The arrangement of these models in the computer programm has made it possible to obtain very short computing time for the planning in spite of the width of the optimisation. The dispatching of a truck is made by solving a classical assignment problem for each dispatch over a horizon of the expected*next 10-15 trucks to request dispatches. This deep-reaching dispatch procedure uses the continuously arriving information about trucks' positions and shovels situations and models by probability functions the expected waiting time of shovels and trucks. In this manner trucks and shovels are synchronized and last moments' opportunities for productivity gains can be obtained. The dispatch procedure takes .5 second on PDP11. This integrated planning and dispatch procedure gives high productivity while ensuring good blending. Results from the Mount Wright mine of the Quebec-Cartier Mining Co., where the integrated procedure has been installed on the existing computer equipment PDP11, are included.

It is now generally admitted by experts that at least so far as rapid progress is concerned the Alpine system of tunnel-driving is superior to any other. This is perhaps natural in view of the record of experience in driving tunnels through the Alps. These great mountain-chains cannot be treated in the ordinary way by shaft-sinking and driving headings, thus multiplying the points of attack. The work must be done from the ends only, hence speed in driving is of the utmost importance ; and, as necessity is the mother of invention, the concentration of effort to make progress has resulted in an organization and in mechanical appliances that have produced results so much in excess of the usual practice, even in America, that a discussion of the subject in detail should be of much value to the engineer and contractor. The first Alpine tunnel mas the Mont Cenis, length 7.5 miles, driven with a progress that averaged about 7.75 ft. per day. Next came the Saint Gothard, 9.5 niiles long, 18 ft. per day; Arlberg, 6.5 miles long, 27.25 ft. per day; Simplon, 12.25 miles long, 36 ft. per day. The figures represent progress when driving from two headings, so that by dividing them in two we get the daily single-heading progress. The latest of the Alpine tunnels is the Loetschberg, now being driven. In this work the world's record has been beaten by a single day's record in one heading of 36 ft. and by an average daily record in one heading of 29.5 feet. The Alpine range forms a natural barrier between a large section of northern and southern Europe. At Tahawus, New York, National Lead Company operates the MacIntyre Development, This operation produces 10,600 long tons of ore per day for crushing, 8,000 tons for grinding and processing, of which 2,000 tons per day reports as tailing for disposal in an impounded tailing storage area. With the change in location of mining operations at the mine of National Lead Company, a change in the area for tailing disposal by gravity became necessary, This called for the diversion of tailing from near the proposed mining area to areas more favorable for long term storage by gravity. In order to avail the operation of maximum storage for the future, a uniform minimum grade launder was proposed with a minimum velocity and maximum outfall at the discharge. Disposal of the gravity and flotation tailing was formerly accomplished in open ditch from the concentrator at a grade of 1.5 percent. It was desirable to design the new launder at grades less than this for the greater storage elevation.

The Sustut Copper deposit, 230 miles northwest of Prince George, B.C., was discovered in August of 1971. Subsequent exploration has included 56,417 feet of surface diamond drilling in 139 holes. The deposit occurs in gently dipping volcanic rocks of the Upper Triassic Takla Group, which outcrops as rugged mountains. The general Mesozoic sequence comprises some 20,000 feet of green and red basaltic to andesitic rocks. The Lower Formation is characterized by subaqueous basalt, andesite and augite porphyry flows with interbedded breccias. They were rapidly deposited in tectonic depressions of limited extent and steep gradients. Fades changes are abundant. The Middle Formation consists of volcaniclastic rocks made up of fragments from the underlying formation. Two cycles are discernible, both with basal turbiditic, tuf-faceous sandstone and shale units overlain by massive, volcanic conglomerates exhibiting graded and cross bedding. A broader, shallower-water basin is indicated. The top of the uppermost unit was subaerially deposited. The Upper Formation is a variable sequence of volcanic sedimentary rocks. Detritus was supplied from a wide source area and included multiple reworked fragments of the lower formations and material from other rock groups known in the region. Zeolite fades metamorphism is recognized throughout the entire sequence. Epidote is particularly abundant in the Middle Formation, demonstrating the results of metasomatism. The mineralized zone is approximately concordant with the strata over 100-200 feet of the Middle Formation succession. It lies just below the zone of transition from subaqueous to subaerial deposition in the top unit. Hematite, chalcocite, pyrite, bornite, chalcopyrite and native copper are disseminated throughout all sizes of lithic fragments and matrix. Concentration into the specific zone is believed, to be due to upward leaching of copper during low-grade metamorphic and metasomitic reaction. Precipitation occurred in the zone of hydration characterized by prehnite-pumpellyite below the oxidized subaerial rocks.

IN the winter of 1941-42, muscovite mica was discovered by a young prospector, Justin Purdy, in the township of Mattawan, Nipissing District, Ontario, a few miles north of the small settlement of Eau Claire, which lies on the main Transcontinental Highway (No. 17) between Mattawa and North Bay. Muscovite had been known for many years to occur in the general Mattawa region, and various small efforts at production had previously been made by individuals working scattered deposits in the area. These minor activities, however, had never led to production of any consequence or the discovery of any important mica bodies. The Purdy finds were made in a heavily timbered, mountainous area lying about three miles north of the low-lying settled land along the highway, and in a section not hitherto prospected. The mica taken by Purdy and two partners from surface outcrops proved so remarkable in point of size of trimmed sheets that the find attracted considerable attention, and the area surrounding the three claims taken up by the prospectors was quickly blanket-staked by various interests. Though a number of other mica-bearing pegmatite dikes were 'found later on these stakings, none proved as rich as those on the original Purdy ground; very little commercial mica was obtained from them and attempts to develop them were short-lived. Purdy and his partners sold their initial production to dealers in Ottawa and Hull, where the Canadian mica industry long has centered. Young Purdy, unfortunately was killed in a motor accident in the early summer of 1942. His father continued mining operations for a few months and produced and sold a considerable amount of mica. In October 1942 the Purdy holdings were acquired by Inspiration Mining and Development Co. of Amos, Quebec, which had been active in staking in the area. This company formed a subsidiary, Purdy Mica Mines, Limited, to develop the property. Under the energetic management of Joseph R. Norrie, rapid progress was made, and production soon attained important proportions. Realizing from the outset the unusual character and potential value in the war effort of the Purdy discovery, the Metals Controller, Department of Munitions and Supply, at once arranged with the Department of Mines and Resources for an official geological report on the area, and also drew the attention of the War Production Board in Washington to what seemed likely to prove a highly important source of strategic-quality mica. Através do estudo dos mecanismos de desgaste dos refratários, optou-se pelo ajuste dos escorificantes, melhoria das práticas de reparo com escória, mudança do projeto dos tijolos e ajuste da vazão das ventaneiras. Com as melhorias implantadas, houve redução do consumo de massa de projeção e aumento em 100% da vida útil das ventaneiras.

Recycling of dust using a rotary hearth furnace (RHF) has gained considerable attention in the past two decades for the sustainable production of steel with less environmental impact. In order to further promote the recycling of electric arc furnace dust and carbonaceous wastes using the RHF process, a mathematical model was developed to predict the reaction behaviour of dust-reductant composites. The reduction kinetics of zinc and iron oxides as well as the volatilization behaviour of volatile matter in the reluctant were considered. The modeling approach and some preliminary results are presented in this article.

Historically, most investigations of biogeochemical cycling in acid rock drainage systems involved synoptic sampling over longer time periods (one sample per week or month) or intensive time series studies over a few hours or days. However, many important episodic loading events, such as seasonal meltwater and storm events occur on timescales that are rarely observed by these traditional sampling approaches. Monitoring these transient processes, which may contribute the bulk of the annual metal loading, is essential for accurate assessment in acid rock drainage areas. Recent work also has demonstrated dramatic diel (24 hour cycle) variations in trace metal concentrations in response to diel changes in temperature, pH, oxygen, and photochemical cycling (Brick and Moore, 1996; Nimick et al, in prep). To characterise a system that may respond to diel, seasonal, and episodic events, a monitoring program must sample at a frequency that captures the details of these major forcing events. We developed two novel instruments, the Zn-DigiScan and the DigiSampler to examine low and high frequency temporal changes in acid rock drainage areas. The Zn-DigiScan is a battery powered real time in situ chemical analyser designed for long-term deployments with hourly analyses of Zn. Stream physical parameters (temperature, conductivity, dissolved oxygen, pH, turbidity, etc) were measured every 15 minutes with a water quality sonde. The DigiSampler was developed for the long-term daily sampling of biogeochemically active elements and can take either discrete samples or samples integrated over 24 hours. The DigiSampler collects 2 ml samples in a Teflon coil which are separated by 0.2 ml nitrogen bubbles. The sample coil is returned to lab and the 2 ml samples are diluted 1:10 and analysed for trace metals by ICP-MS. Initial results from a three-day deployment at Fisher Creek, MT, USA have successfully demonstrated the ability of the Zn-DigiScan to record Zn concentrations at levels below 100 ¦g/L. Zinc concentrations measured at 30 minute intervals in Fisher Creek showed a diel cycle with low values of ~25 ¦g/L in the late afternoon and increasing to ~60 ¦g/L by early morning. Zn concentrations were inversely related to temperature and pH, suggesting that temperature and pH dependent adsorption was the main factor controlling diel Zn fluctuations. Initial deployment of the DigiSampler also was successful, revealing diel cycles in Zn, Cu, and Mn. Comparison of trace metal samples collected by the DigiSampler showed good agreement with samples collected by an Isco automated water sampler, demonstrating that the DigiSampler can collect clean samples for trace metal analysis at the low ¦g/L range.

"Although a large number of processes have been developed and applied to the separation of barite from other minerals, there is a lack of information in the literature about the separation of barite from iron ores. Nowadays, there are millions of tonnes of iron ore disposed as a waste or tailings given its high content of sulphur in the form of barite. In order to effectively separate barite from iron ore and ensure that mining business is truly creating economic and sustainable values, this paper provides a greater understanding of barite properties, the origin and occurrence of this barium-bearing mineral, and the employed beneficiation processes. A test work is conducted in a barite bearing iron ore from a deposit located in the Republika Srpska (Bosnia and Herzegovina) in order to separate the barite and check if a marketable by-product can be produced by drawing upon rich barite tailings. INTRODUCTION The exploration of iron ore containing barite results in a large amount of unrecovered material. The main difficulty in processing and using barite bearing iron ores is given by their high content of sulphur, silica and barium, which are unwanted chemical compounds in the subsequent processes in iron industry. As a result, millions of tonnes of iron ore are discarded every year into tailings or as a waste, which results in production losses, higher operation costs and environmental impacts (Praes et al. 2013). Therefore, the separation of barite from iron ores not only means reducing the environmental impact, but also an opportunity to generate income and beneficiate society. The beneficiation of barite bearing iron ores is a subject which requires a deeper investigation to solve the challenges faced by the iron industry. There are only a few studies that describe flowsheets proposed for the production of barite concentrate of iron ores. The most likely reason for this gap is that barite is frequently exploited commercially as a primary product rather than a by-product. In order to effectively separate barite from iron ore and ensure that mining business is truly creating economic and sustainable values, this paper provides a greater understanding of barite properties, the origin and occurrence of this barium-bearing mineral, and the employed beneficiation processes. Introduction The frigid regions of Canada's high arctic islands are well-known for major oil and gas explorations. But mining leads the way in development. Cominco Ltd.'s Polaris mine is in its second full year of commercial production, and outstripping the rated production capacity foreseen by its planners. The Polaris mine is located on the shore of Little Cornwallis Island, near the settlement of Resolute Bay. The mine property is compact. It occupies about 3 km2 (0.5 sq miles) of the vast Arctic landscape. A number of mining and technological firsts were necessary to bring a mine into production at this 76° North latitude. Development constraints that had to be overcome included climate, remote location, and the limited ice-free shipping season. Construction of the entire process plant and ancillary facilities took place on a barge in the South where labor and supplies are plentiful. The plant was towed through ice-strewn waters to its permanent location at the mine site 1450 km (900 miles) from the North Pole. Freighters moved the first shipments to the South during ice break-up in late summer 1982. Most of the zinc concentrate is sold to European smelters. The remainder is tolled at a custom smelter in Europe, and the resulting metal is sold by Cominco. Lead concentrate is sold to European smelters. The mine was designed to produce 177 kt/a (195,000 stpy) of zinc concentrate and 41 kt/a (45,000 stpy) of lead concentrate. Actual production in 1983 was considerably greater, with both mill throughput and feed grades being higher than forecast. Production was 217 kt (239,300 st) of zinc concentrate and 51 kt (56,300 st) of lead concentrate. Average milling rate was 2.3 kt/d (2500 stpd), well above the designed capacity of 2.1 kt/d of (2300 stpd). Arctic Climate Extremes The climate is typical of the Arctic: very dry with short, cool summers and long, cold winters. From November through February, there is continuous darkness. Continuous daylight prevails from April to August. Precipitation is light, rivaling the Sahara desert at about 127 mm (5 in.) of rain and snow a year. An almost continual wind forms deep snow drifts against any obstacle on the ground. Temperatures range from a winter low of about -50°C (-58°F) to a relatively pleasant 15°C (59°F) during sunny days in August. Freeze-up begins in September and ice thickness increases from less than 0.3 m (1 ft) in early October to a maximum of about 2.1 m (7 ft) in May. The dramatic rescue of nine Pennsylvania coal miners trapped nearly 90 m (300 ft) underground for77 hours probably would not have happened without the high technology equipment and improved mine rescue training techniques available today. By now, most everyone has heard the story of the accident that occurred at the Quecreek Mine near Somerset, PA. At about 9 pm on Wednesday, July 24, the miners were drilling coal in the room-and-pillar mine. Their drilling accidentally punched through to the adjacent, abandoned Saxman Mine. Old mine maps of the Saxman Mine led Black Wolf Coal, Quecreek’s owners, to believe they were between 60 to 90 m (200 to 300 m) away from the abandoned mine. Those maps proved to be inaccurate.

This paper presents a mathematical model for the study of the 2D movement of blast bench faces based on the high-speed video analysis of three blasts at El Aljibe quarry (Spain) recorded at 2,000 frames per second. In these blasts, a set of bags of 0.75 × 0.75 m were placed in front of a selected blasthole defining a reference plane in which to study the kinematics of the movement. The burdens range from 3.86 m to 5.54 m, with a bench height of 12–13 m. An affine transformation system was calculated to convert coordinates from the video images into actual spatial coordinates. The problem is established from a multi-objective minimization approach in order to simultaneously optimize two defined objectives: trajectory fitting using Total Least Squares regression, and time–displacement regression using Ordinary Least Squares. Muti-objective minimization formulation produces Pareto plots of non-dominated solutions, i.e., optimal combinations of initial velocities and response times, (i.e. time between detonation and the onset of bench face motion). From the Pareto frontier, the most balanced solution is selected. Blast response time lasts only a few milliseconds and appears so brief at the frame rate used that it is difficult to detect visually. In this context, the bi-objective optimization-based approach proves to be a more robust tool than frame-by frame survey for quantifying such a rapid event while also maintaining a strong performance in the trajectory fitting task. Root Mean Square Error (RMSE) for the two minimizations average 0.22 m and 0.13 m, respectively. The initial velocities obtained range from 4 to 17 m/s, and the response times 0.7 ms to 21.7 ms. An analytical model is also presented for predicting fragments initial velocity and response time as functions of blast geometry and rock mass properties, explaining approximately 87% of the total variability.

Numerical solutions of immiscible flow problems in which dispersive effects of capillarity are dominated by convection require excessively fine grid spacing with attendant high computing costs. The use of coarser spacing reduces cost but often produces oscillation or undue dispersion associated with displacement fronts, A numerical formulation is proposed here which should be applicable to two-dimensional flow problems. it is in part analogous to an approach previously tested for miscible systems. The convective transport is approximated using a change of variables to yield a coordinate system moving approximately with the local characteristic velocity. The capillarity-induced dispersive terms in the differential system describing the process are approximated with respect to a fixed coordinate system by the usual implicit formulation. One-dimensional tests of the procedure yielded results in which the saturation profiles tended smoothly to the zero-capillary pressure solution as the ratio of viscous to capillary forces was successively increased in a sequence of calculations. This contrasted favorably with solutions by other numerical procedures which would require attendant grid refinements to approach the zero capillary pressure results. INTRODUCTION Numerical solution of displacement problems has until recently relied on applying methods developed primarily for transient heat-flow problems. Such problems are classified as parabolic in type, and where the heat transport is purely by diffusion their solutions are characterized by a high degree of smoothness. It is not surprising, therefore, that for approximating these solutions available finite difference methods are quite adequate. In flow problems the transport is partly by diffusion, partly by convection or flow. Although the problem remains of parabolic type because the dispersive effects of capillary forces or diffusion play some role in every displacement, at high flow rates the problem is dominated by convection, and solutions tend toward those of equations of the hyperbolic type. Solutions of hyperbolic problems are characterized by the translation of fronts, or discontinuities, that may progressively increase in sharpness. Numerical methods for treating parabolic problems become less and less satisfactory as displacement rates increase and the role of dispersion due to concentration or capillary pressure gradients becomes small relative to transport due to flow. In computation the difficulty manifests itself as an error associated with the grid size chosen. 1-6 In summary, if the heat-flow type approximations are to include the terms arising due to convection, one of several choices may be made: (1) an upstream (to the direction of flow) approximation for the convection terms may be used; (2) a centered-in-distance (CID) approximation may be used; or (3) a recently developed approximation based on the theory of oscillation matrices may be chosen.6 The last appears to have significant promise for one-dimensional flow problems; its extendibility to two or three dimensions is an open question. In either of the first two approaches, a suitably small ratio of v&/D must be maintained, where v is the velocity, & is the grid spacing and D the effective dispersivity in the direction of flow. In the first choice, the approximation of the convective part is only first-order correct and errors introduced appear as a numerically induced dispersivity of magnitude proportional to v?x. In the CID choice, the approximation can be second-order correct, but the difference formulation fails to satisfy the maximum principle unless a condition on v?x/D is met. Practically, this means that for high flow rates oscillatory solutions may result in the neighborhood of a front unless exceedingly small grid intervals are taken. While the procedure proposed by Stone and Brian4 permits a less severe limitation to be placed on this ratio, ultimately the flow rates increase relative to the dispersivity the oscillation obtains. The structure and tectonic setting has had a strong influence on gold mineralisation at the Porgera gold deposit. Here, the structural controls on the mineralisation at Porgera are discussed and placed in a regional tectonic context. The Porgera gold deposit is related to the emplacement of the Porgera Intrusive Complex. Prior to intrusive emplacement at Porgera,Papua New Guinea was affected by a major fold and thrust episode which occurred in response to arc-continent collision in the Late Miocene. After crustal shortening the region experienced a relaxation of compression which is expressed in the deformation accompanying mineralisation at Porgera. The first stage of mineralisation (stage I) is hosted by extension fractures, and is spatially associated with exposed intrusive stocks. A later episode of mineralisation (stage II) is hosted by the faults and fractures of the Roamane Fault Zone, which was active as a dip-slip normal fault during stage II mineralisation. Therefore a change in the tectonic environment from shortening to extensional tectonics can be seen at Porgera before and during mineralisation. Rapid fault-slip during stage II mineralisation may have aided high-grade gold mineralisation by subjecting hydrothermal fluids to changes in pressure, temperature, fluid-fluid and fluid-rock interaction. Uplift to form the highlands of Papua New Guinea occurred after mineralisation and was largely complete by 4.0 Ma.

SUCCESS in any underground mining operation is determined by accessibility of the orebody, which in turn is dependent upon maintenance of passage- ways to the mining zones and temporary support of the voids caused by extraction of ore. This is accomplished by one or a combination of the following methods: timbering, back-filling, pillaring, or, more recently, rock bolting. Timbering has usually been the principal means of maintaining these underground openings necessary for mining operations. Timber, however, does not prevent ground movement beyond the scope of localized sloughing, which is indicated by the gradual failing of the timber itself. Besides this, timbering has always been a costly process, and with the decline of available supplies of timber close to the mining areas, mining men have constantly sought other methods of controlling ground.
