Records show that waterflooding was tried in Osage County as early as 1934, but it was not economically important until a large unitized flood in the North Burbank field was begun in 1950. Development was rapid and by the end of 1960, there were 70 active water flood projects and 16 active pressure-maintenance projects in the County. The locations and status of the water-flood and pressure-maintenance projects in Osage County on December 31, 1960 are shown in figure 1, and information pertaining to these projects as of July 1, 1960 is given in table 1. For the past several years, Bureau of Mines petroleum engineers have arranged tours of selected waterflooding projects for the spring meeting of the Kansas-Oklahoma Water flood Association. These tours are conducted to demonstrate unique operating methods and new field equipment and to provide additional opportunities for exchanging information. Each of these tours has been supplemented by a published report describing in detail the projects visited. This report has been prepared for distribution during the 1961 spring tour of three waterflooding projects and a pressure-maintenance project in Osage County, Okla. (fig. 2).

All metals producers are on an unending search for a competitive advantage. They need to produce in the most cost effective way. Sometimes a new mill might be considered but in this paper we present examples of how this might not always be necessary. A detailed investigation by an equipment vendor who can consider the mill and or plant as a complete entity: mechanics, automation and process control can often find solutions that are both lower cost and can be implemented in shorter time frames.

The commonly traded base metals concentrates of copper, lead, tin and zinc are sold by miners to custom smelters using contracts whose terms were generally established at the beginning of the 20th century or even earlier. Technical clauses in these concentrates for items such as payable metals and penalty elements do not reflect current realities of extractive metallurgical technologies and hygiene/environmental issues.It is an axiom that the miners and smelters have a symbiotic relationship. While the existing antique and arcane commercial arrangements serve the purpose of transferring money from the buyer to the seller, they are not likely to result in the industry achieving better overall technical and economic outcomes. By examining the cases for copper concentrates and zinc concentrates in particular, it will be shown that the practical application of these antiquated technical clauses does not drive the miners to produce the better quality concentrates that should be desired by the smelters. This is despite development of mineral beneficiation and hydrometallurgical technologies that would allow the miners to make better products.The adage that any extractive metallurgical problem in the smelter is cheaper to solve in the concentrator still generally holds.While nickel concentrates are only touched on lightly in this discussion because sales terms are more opaque than those for the other base metals, it is expected that the same conclusions will apply.CITATION:Munro, P D and Munro, S E, 2015. European coal mines are facing a very difficult situation. Despite a steadily increasing world energy consumption, the sales of European coal mines have been going down and production has to be adapted. The reason is the collapse of energy prices aided by the decreasing rate of U.S. $ to Deutschmark in the last few years. The problems are not due to the development of European mines themselves. Assured energy supplies are an important condition for the health of a nation's economy. Contribution of domestic energy production ensures some degree of independence from world market fluctuations as to supply volumes and price, and maintaining jobs and should be achieved within the framework of economic constellations. Governmental energy programs are planned towards meeting this end.

"At the Falconbridge Limited, Canadian Nickel Division, Sudbury Operations, we investigated the ""NO NOISE"" ear muffs model NN3-F which is a Swedish product with foam-filled sealing rings (the Hellberg Standard Volume Hearing Protector). It is used extensively at Falconbridge mines in Sudbury.The research which was carried out in the four Falconbridge mines was conducted under three different headings: manufacturer's attenuation data (psychophysical method), clamping force and head size (bizygomatic diameter), and attenuation tests (physical methods) under working conditions.Manufacturers of hearing protectors claim their products offer noise reductions of 23 decibels (NRR) or more, but they fail to point out that this reduction is obtainable only under ideal conditions. The reality of attenuation under working conditions, as several studies have found, is quite different.Methods for using short measurements to determine the noise exposure index, and for controlling muff-wearing habits, were developed at the Elliot Lake Laboratory. Measurements taken at Falconbridge on ""NO NOISE"" ear muffs revealed that they have a practical attenuation of some IO to 13 decibels. It is important to note here that measurements also revealed that clamping force (thus attenuation) was in an inverse relationship with ear muff comfort. Measuring attenuation using noise dosimeters was a difficult job. Not a single surveyor would accept these measurements (physical method) for absolute accuracy. Apart from that, it was impossible to measure, in one shift, more than two work stations. Because of this, we sought a solution: measuring head size and clamping force in relation to actual attenuations.A detailed analysis of the relationship between attenuation and head size/clamping force was done at four mines. Standard deviation ellipses (standard error ellipses) for head size versus clamping force are in close agreement with measurements that were carried out. In order to measure clamping force an apparatus was constructed and a method for measuring suspension system durability is described in Appendices Band C of this report. At the same time we sought to reduce deterioration of ear muffs in mines as well as to put in place a system whereby attenuation can be controlled and improved. The clamping force apparatus can be operated automatically. The proposed control system is quick, simple and efficient . This system is equally applicable in small and large mining operations, and it can be totally automated and the data computerized for audit of the results. This control system is a new step in controlling ear muff attenuation in working environments.From these measurements of NN3-F ""NO NOISE"" muffs it can be concluded that ear muffs are not the total solution to protect the worker from noise.As the results were evaluated folio wing measurement, Falconbridge switched from the NN3-F ""NO NOISE"" muffs to approximately 90% Mark V ""NO NOISE"" muffs and 10% Mark V MSA muffs. These new muffs showed much better head size versus clamping force relationship and can be expected to produce 14 dBA or better attenuation of noise. "INTRODUCTIONThe Laboratoire Souterrain de Modane (LSM) is an underground research laboratory located in the Western Alps on the French – Italian border. It is located in the middle of the 13km long Fréjus highway tunnel that links Modane (France) to Bardonecchia (Italy) in correspondence of the highest overburden of 1800m. The LSM current activity is mainly based on the investigations about the dark matter and requires very sensitive instrumentation which shall be protected from cosmic rays. To comply with the new legislation about safety in tunnels, the highway tunnels owners agreed in 2007 the construction of a parallel safety tunnel, at an average distance of 50m from the existing tunnel and the laboratory owner CNRS (Centre National de recherche scientifique) also decided to extend the existing laboratory with the construction of a new 17000 m3 cavern allowing the installation of wider and more powerful instruments that could increase chances of success of research. Preliminary studies stated that, considering both geological and functional issues, the most appropriate location for the new laboratory shall be in between the two tunnels and parallel to the existing laboratory (see Figure 1).Hence, the CNRS asked Systra, already in charge of the works supervision of the safety tunnel, to realize the design of the new cavern. The laboratory extension includes the construction of a 40 m long cavern with 300 m² cross section and two smaller tunnels connecting the safety tunnel and the existing laboratory to the new cavern. The minimum distance between the front face of the new LSM and the highway tunnel is about 25 m.The French and the Italian authorities, responsible of the exploitation of the Fréjus highway tunnel, asked the CNRS to develop an accurate study indicating that the construction of the laboratory extension would not have any negative impact on the existing structures of the highway tunnel. The main results of the developed study by Systra are summarized hereafter. The construction works should begin prior to the end of the construction works of the Fréjus safety tunnel in 2018."

This paper is in the nature of a rough preliminary report on the progress that has been made in the application of the mass spectrometer to various problems arising in the petroleum industry. A few years ago the authors considered a number of the problems that were arising in the qualitative and quantitative measurement of small amounts of hydrocarbons. The methods available of making analyses by chemical techniques appeared to leave much room for improvement. Without going into the reasons at this point, attention was turned to the possibility of employing physical instead of chemical methods of accomplish-ing the desired results. A preliminary investigation disclosed that the mass spectrometer presented a possibility of solving many problems which could not easily be accomplished by other methods. Work was begun in developing the necessary apparatus and technique. A great deal of encouragement and many valuable suggestions were received from Dr. Robert A. Millikan, Dr. W. R. Smythe, and Dr. W. N. Lacey, of the California Institute of Technology, and from Dr. E. 0. Lawrence, who recently received the Nobel Prize, of the University of California. The authors particularly wish to acknowl-edge the very great willingness of these out-standing scientists to be helpful in solving many of the problems that were involved. So far as the authors are aware, this was the first application of the mass spectrometer to commercial work. The results were considerably better than had at first been anticipated. Briefly, it is pos-sible to run a qualitative and quantitative analysis of an unknown mixture of hydro-carbon gases, with an accuracy of better than plus or minus 5 per cent of each of the various constituents. An exceedingly high degree of sensitivity has been obtained, and a relatively short time is required to com-plete an analysis. Furthermore, it is un-necessary to separate a mixture of gases into its various components in order to complete the analysis.

The potential for recovery of enriched uranium from spent nuclear fuel which has been consolidated into a nuclear waste form was explored in the studies reported here. The waste form of interest is iron-enriched basalt (IEB)--a silicate-based, fused-cast ceramic. IEB samples were prepared containing fuel assembly materials that simulate the core debris of Three Mile Island Unit II;1,2 the nominal composition of the consolidated waste form is given in Table 1. Ore Types The IEB samples, or man-made uranium ores (MMUO), are in two different mineralogical forms. Each MU0 was made by melting the constituent materials and holding at about 1500°C for 1 h. The MMUOs were then heat treated to control crystallization and crystal growth and then cooled to room temperature.

"The Process of gas purging in molten Aluminium has been an industrial practise for many years. The melting of alloying elements and their rapid distribution in the bath is very important. To improve the mixing and homogenisation process, at RHI NON FERROUS METALS ENGENEERING GMBH a lot of CFD calculations were done. The so developed new ""purging program"" was tested at Alumino Catalan S.A., Spain. The results of the testtrials were very satisfactory and corresponds very well with the calculated data."

Excessive use of computers in teaching, especially in self-learning programs, may destroy creativity and initiative. It is essential that engineers remain innovative to develop new technology. Safety legislation may have hindered the Development of mine managers. It may be necessary to develop two distinct streams of mining engineers. One should be biased towards human relations and safety, to 'be a certificated mine manager, and the other should be mathematically based as a high-technology mining engineer who would not necessarily qualify for a certificate of competency without a postgraduate course.

In the expansion program of the iron ore pelletizing plant at Kakogawa Works of Kobe Steel Ltd., an automatic computer control of products fineness on grinding department is practised. The main problem of the process control of a grinding system is scattering of measured fineness values of products. The scattering comes from the inherent nature of grinding systems, sampled powders and measuring systems. A method is developed to presume the exact status of the plant from scattering products (fineness values and to achieve a stable con trollability of the plant by utilizing the computer. An on-line fineness analyzer, an automatic sampling device and vari-speed air separators are also developed to compose the automatic grinding plant. This report introduces the fundamental epts and results of the automatic fineness rol system of the grinding plant.

Flow maldistribution in the iron blast furnace has been studied analytically by the use of the vectorial form of the Ergun equation and experimentally via packed columns and a cold model of a blast furnace. Experimental results are presented showing the effect on fluid flow patterns of the following types of nonuniformities in a packed bed: the increased voidage at the wall ("wall effect"), the decreased voidage at the interface between layers of materials with different sizes and shapes, and the differences in resistance to flow of bulk regions of a column with different sizes and shapes. The proposed theory is applied to the calculation of fluid flow patterns for these nonuniformities. Velocity profiles, as calculated from these flow patterns, were found to agree reasonably well with experimental measurements obtained via hot wire anemometry techniques for laboratory scale packed columns. Calculated fluid flow patterns are presented for blast furnace burdens which show how flow patterns are affected by (a) coke segregation and (b) the relative differences in resistance to flow between coke and oxide pellet layers. For the cold model study, calculated flow patterns are presented based on photographs of a given burden distribution. The velocity profiles calculated from these flow patterns were found to agree reasonably well with the velocity profiles measured from the cold Model.

"With regard to control environment pollution in the roasting pretreatment of sulfur & arsenic-bearing gold concentrate, roasting of double-layered pellet was proposed. In the paper, the characteristics of double-layered pellet roasting were studied. Removal and solidification rates of sulfur and arsenic were investigated as primary factors. The result indicated that the removal and solidification rates of arsenic reached up to 95.91 % and 98.95% while the sulfur was 97.19% and 97.90% respectively on the premise of adopting slaked lime as solidified agent at temperature of 6000, the package proportion of 2.14 and roasting time of 3h. However, pyrite and arsenopyrite were transformed to hematite and magnetite and product of solidification mainly consisted of calcium sulfate, calcium arsenate and calcium sulfite within optimum roasting parameters.IntroductionUtilization of refractory gold resources has been gradually concentrated on with the depletion of the gold resources which are easy to deal with in the world [1]. Sulfur and arsenic-bearing gold ore is a typical refractory gold one, in which ultrafme gold is encapsulated in the structure of metal sulfide minerals [2,3], so it gives poor recovery through direct cyanide leaching. These refractory ores need pretreatment before the process of cyanide leaching to undermine lattice structure of pyrite and arsenopyrite containing gold [4] so that the gold could touch with cyanide solution [5]. Among various methods of pretreatment, conventional roasting method is most effective, but this process generates gases such as S02 and As203 harmful to environment. Therefore solidification roasting was proposed to solve this problem occurring in the conventional roasting at the end of last century."

Exploration for uranium in Australia commenced only during the 1940s, but in this short period has been very successful as one third of the world's low cost uranium reserves have been discovered in Australia. Total uranium exploration expenditure in Australia up to the end of 1983 was $A(1983) 554 million; this discovered 20 potentially economic deposits and official reserves of 560 000 tonnes of uranium oxide at an average cost of $1 per kg of U 0 . An exponential 8 eserves indicates distribution of uranium r that there could be 54 undiscovered uranium deposits in Australia, each with reserves of 20 000 tonnes U308 or more, in addition to smaller deposits. Using a constant uranium price of $A(1983) 79 per kg, no deposit is economic at a grade below 0.12 per cent U 08 or with reserves of less than 3 000 tonnes. Selecting deposits with reserves of 5 000 tonnes U 0g or more as prime exploration targets, only 39 per cent of discoveries will yield a real internal rate of return (IRR) of 10 per cent or more. After committing a minimum exploration budget of $10 million to this search, an explorer has one chance between 7 and 12 of discovering a deposit that will repay the exploration investment.

Characterization of the rock mass in which deep underground structures are to be located is of critical importance to the feasibility and design of the structures. The process involves areal studies, subsurface exploration and extensive testing to obtain comprehensive data on the rock units which will enclose the excavated structures. The Illinois Deep Hole Project provides an example of characterization of rock at great depth describing the types and variety of tests and studies which were utilized and the results obtained.

In the manufacture of rimming steel—which constitutes the bulk of the world's production of mild steel—the factors that determine the quality of the product are very closely associated with the pouring and solidification of the steel in the ingot mold. The behavior of the metal in the mold is, on the one hand, the resultant of the complex processes through which the liquid metal has passed, and, on the other, it is an indication of the probable behavior of the ingot during subsequent rolling and finishing operations. A detailed study of the mechanism of solidification of rimming ingots ought to yield information that will be useful in controlling the structure of the ingot and the quality of the ultimate product. The first step in such a study is to determine the rate at which the solid shell of the ingot forms from the liquid metal in the mold. A knowledge of the rate of solidification will make it possible to correlate observations of rimming action and gas evolution with studies of the structure, porosity, and segregation within the ingot. Thus, if the metal in the mold is observed to fall, let us say one minute after pouring, the portion of the structure associated with this fall will be located in the part of the ingot that is solidifying at that particular moment. The knowledge that the ingot solidifies to a depth of 3/4 in. in the first minute enables us to locate in the ingot the structural features corresponding to the observed fall. Conversely, the blowhole condition associated with a rising or growing ingot will be found in the part of the ingot that is solidifying at the time the phenomenon occurs. The time required for the complete solidification of an ingot has long been a matter of speculation. It is of considerable practical importance in connection with charging and heating in the soaking pits. Too rapid handling of the ingot through heating and rolling processes has been thought to be associated with excessive pipe and other internal defects, so that a further object of this investigation was to attempt to estimate the time required for complete solidification, or the minimum practical time within which the subsequent operations can be performed with the minimum hazard.

Department of Pathology, British Post-graduate Medical School, London:The experiments here recorded were devised and carried -out during the last two years in an attempt to corroborate the important work of Denny, Robson and Irwin (1939) in which they found that experimental silicosis could be prevented by means of metallic aluminum. By causing rabbits to inhale powdered quartz for several months they induced experimental silicosis. These animals then served as controls for comparison with another group which were dusted with a mixture of quartz and aluminum. In the second group silicosis failed to develop.Our experimental procedure was somewhat different. We resorted to intratracheal insufflation instead of simple inhalation, and we used rats instead of rabbits: otherwise the essential features of the original experiments were carefully duplicated.EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES.A single dose of dust was delivered into the lungs of each animal. The dust was suspended in a fluid medium and injected by means of a syringe directly into the trachea in known quantity (technique of Kettle and Hilton, 1932). The suspensions were autoclaved before use and were injected with aseptic precautions. Having had a long experience of this technique we employed it with confidence and usually secured a fairly uniform dispersal of dust throughout both lungs. To carry out injections successfully one requires, above all, an even suspension of dust which will flow smoothly and quickly from the syringe. This is not difficult in the case of quartz, for, though it tends to settle out rather quickly, this can be avoided by constantly agitating the suspension. The syringe containing the inoculum may be shaken gently right up to the moment of injection and then emptied quickly to prevent sedimentation. Powdered aluminum is more difficult to handle, for the particles tend to flocculate and are not readily made to disperse evenly in saline, even by violent shaking. For this reason an emulsifying agent may be used to advantage, provided it does not complicate the experiment, a point to be mentioned again presently.THE EXPERIMENTSExperiments with quartz alone: Extensive silicotic lesions were produced in 23 out of 26 rats by the administration of pure quartz dust in doses of from 50 to 200 mg. per rat. The dust was so finely pulverised that the particles averaged about 1-p. in size: none was larger than 5 p. and 99 per cent. were under 2.5 p.Eight of these animals survived for seven months and were then killed...

The provision of professional engineering services in Queensland is regulated through the Professional Engineers Act 2002. The Act requires that anyone providing professional engineering services must be registered and is subject to continuing professional development requirements. The engineering profession is actively requesting the Queensland Government to expand registration to include associate and technologist engineering practitioners. In view of the strong moves at the Federal level towards national registration of professional groups the lessons of the Queensland experience are very relevant across Australia. This paper describes the rationale behind the Act and outlines its operation. It discusses some misconceptions regarding the applicability of the Act to various engineering activities. There is much that the Act has to offer individual engineers and industry generally in establishing, articulating and maintaining standards for professional engineering work. The paper considers legal actions taken to date under the provisions of the Act and discusses the way in which this parallels industry moves towards quality assurance of work force capability.

BECAUSE of the nature of the environments in which metals are handled, it is natural that gases should be suspected of intruding into metallurgical operations, there to produce effects both beneficial and detrimental. The problem of tracing and controlling such effects is often made difficult by the complexity of the conditions surrounding 'their occurrence, even though the fundamental mechanisms involved may be simple and of familiar type. Many gas-metal reactions are known to be implemented by processes of diffusion. These form a homogeneous group of phenomena which become more readily understandable when viewed together, in that the knowledge gained from one serves to interpret the next. It is the purpose of the present paper to present, by means of examples drawn from practice, a brief survey, of the ways in which gas-metal diffusion serves and obstructs the purposes of the metal-fabricating industries. The selection of the cases described was made by consulting more than thirty-six practicing experts whose combined experience provided an extensive coverage of the field and who were in a position to supply examples of occurrences of present day interest. The response was generous and it is regrettable that space permits the description of only a limited number of typical examples with but brief mention of parallel cases. THE NATURE OF GAS-METAL DIFFUSION The term "gas-metal diffusion," although commonly used, is ambiguous in so far as it implies that a definite group of substances may be identified as gases and may be expected to behave in a manner distinct from other substances in association with metals. "Gases" such as oxygen and hydrogen when diffusing through a liquid or solid metal are properly components of the liquid or solid solution; they behave as alloying elements and are not to be distinguished in their diffusion characteristics from other elements, except that each has an individual rate of diffusion. On the other hand, a number of metals in certain temperature ranges are volatile to the extent that they may appear in the form of vapor in metallurgical operations. For the sake of greater definiteness, therefore, it will be convenient to- regard as "gas-metal diffusion" any process in which the result depends upon one or more of the diffusing elements appearing, at some stage, in the gaseous state, or as a compound gas. In the British coal mining industry, during the last decade, a great deal of environmental monitoring experience was acquired, particularly in the Doncaster Area of the Yorkshire coal- field, which had a long history of spontaneous combustion and gas emission problems. This paper summarises the experience obtained and shows how the introduction and operation of these systems has resulted in improved techniqu- es for fire detection and control. Some of these systems are described in detail with emphasis placed on the uses to which output data are put, and their impact upon management at colliery level. Reference is also made to the problems encountered in the development of such systems and how they were solved. The paper also makes reference to the recent Research and Development work of the NCB's Scientific Department and Mining Res- earch Development Establishment (MRDE), which was directed to the design and application of a range of underground sensors, and so ensured continuing progress in this field. The paper refers briefly to a new comprehensive monitoring unit and an integrated fire detection and data transmitting system which are currently being assessed in the Yorkshire coalfield.
