The use of solvent extraction (SX) in process metallurgy is particularly attractive as it is applicable to a wide range of solute concentration and pH, and it allows complete separation of chemically similar metals such as nickel and cobalt and the rare earths among others. It is therefore applicable to the processing of low grade and complex ores, which is increasing and expanding owing to the diminishing reserves of quality ores, and this has driven the increasing and expanding use of SX.The current SX technology, however, has inherent limitations owing to the use of mechanical agitation as it induces high shear mixing. Excessive shear produces very fine droplets, and while this favours mass transfer, it also leads to sluggish phase separation. High shear mixing is also known to favour crud formation. All these factors as well as high power and reagents consumptions contribute to poor process efficiency. Electrostatic solvent extraction (ESX) is similar to conventional SX except that mechanical agitation is replaced with electrostatic agitation. In direct contrast to mechanical agitation, it allows the production of very small droplets that can be made to maintain intense motion, which favours mass transfer, without affecting the phase separation. In addition, as it uses an electrostatic field, the power consumption is minimal. Hence, it promises to be a superior alternative to conventional SX mixing although an application of the technique is yet to be achieved.Our work to develop an application of the technique in process metallurgy has now established that electrostatic field has no effect on either the stability of the reagents or the chemistry of the process. A volumetric flowrate that is comparable to that of a conventional sieve plate pulse column is achievable. We have also established that electrostatic fields can be made to yield much narrower droplet size distributions than those of mechanically agitated contactors, and they allow better control of droplet motions, which include oscillation and linear motion and hence, mass transfer. These are significant advancements toward our goal and shall be discussed in this presentation.

IT has often been stated that the steel industry did no research or development work in the decades preceding 1920. If restricted to organized research on the quality and field of application of structural and engineering steels, this statement may be true. But the industry did conduct a vast amount of process research during this period, although some of the projects were not carried out as separate organized research programs. Securing a low cost of tonnage production was the sole problem receiving serious attention from the industry prior to 1920, and today this is still the major problem. Those in the industry deserve much commendation for the important increase in production capacity per dollar invested and for the markedly lowered cost of production. In recent years, a distinct change may be noted in the attitude of the steel industry toward research involving its product. With the advent of high-speed machinery both in the manufacturing and transportation industries, steel as a quality engineering material has come to the fore. In the past, high-quality carbon steels and alloy steels have been introduced over a period of years, largely at the insistence of the consumer and partly prompted by research carried out by those interested in the use of the alloys. The commercial introduction of these materials made slow progress.

Current commercial processes for producing ceramic carbides require temperatures of 1400–2000 °C and often use extensive milling operations to produce a powder product. A process that could reduce the energy requirements of commercial carbide production could allow for these materials to be implemented in a greater number of applications. In this study, tungstate (WO4 2−) and silicate (SiO3 2−) anions were adsorbed onto activated carbon and converted into silicon carbide (SiC) whiskers and a mixture of tungsten and tungsten carbide (W/WC) crystals via carbothermal reduction using inert and reducing gas atmospheres at temperatures much lower than what is required by current commercial processes (950 °C for W/WC/W2C and 1200 °C for SiC). The adsorption process was statistically-optimized via a central composite response surface analysis using DesignExpert 9. Inductive coupled plasma optical emission spectroscopy (ICP-OES) was used to measure, and optimize, adsorption efficiency while the carburization products were characterized using X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy.

Some years ago the open Hearth Committee of the Institute reached the conclusion that the reading of "set" papers tended to preclude the specific and detailed discussion of specialized problems of current interest to those operating steel plants. As an innovation the Committee distributed in advance of the meeting in May, 1927, a questionnaire containing a list of 27 topics involving operating problems. The subsequent discussion of the questions, participated in by 37 members, was a conspicuous success. Semiannual meetings have been held since; and at the conference of November, 1929, at Chicago, 131 men were present and the minutes comprised a book of 133 printed pages, thereby, indicating the growing value of the conference in the eyes of both the metallurgists themselves and the companies that employed them. With this example in mind, the Directors felt that definite advantages would accrue to a similar conference to be participated in by smelter officials and metallurgists engaged in the operation of copper reverberatory furnaces. The settlement of the Carson litigation, which for several years had virtually stopped public discussion of reverberatory practice, offered an opportune time for launching the scheme. Although the Conference may become largely self-financing in the future, some funds were regarded as necessary to conduct the first meeting. The members of the Rocky Mountain Income Committee, in view of the fact that copper smelting was essentially an activity of the Rocky Mountain area, recommended the project be, in effect, underwritten by the Fund, and the directors approved an appropriation for this purpose. Invitations were extended to high executives of the various-companies interested to send representatives to an initial meeting to be held at Salt Lake City, May 26-27. The response was enthusiastic. Twenty-three metallurgists representing 12 different plants were present to discuss the comprehensive-program relating to construction and operating phases of reverberatory smelting. It was understood that the record was not to be included in the regular publications of the Institute but that it would be prepared for private distribution among the participants and the officials of their companies. That the exchange of views and experience was no less instructive and stimulating than it was frank, full and informal is indicated by the following transcript of the minutes of the meeting.

To prevent injury to miners caused by violent whipping of mining machine trailing cables. Approach: The hydraulic cable controls are adjusted to reduce whip by visual reference of the cable sag to the height of the cable guide. How It Works: The cable sag is adjusted by visually estimating its height above the ground, at a specific reference distance behind the machine. This reference distance is measured horizontally back from the point where the cable leaves the cable guide. The Reference distance is 2H where H equals the height of the cable guide above the floor. See Figure 1. Cable sag should be less during rewinding than during unwinding. During cable unwinding, the cable height (at the refer¬ence distance) should equal 1/31-1. During rewinding, the cable height should equal ½ H. Field tests were made on several manufacturers' equipment after adjusting cable sag as above. Cable whip was greatly reduced for all, and whip was almost eliminated on a shuttle car equipped with a Joy Manufacturing Company 500108-104 cable reef and the newer (nonporous) shuttle valve. The following directions are for adjusting cable sag on a shuttle car equipped with a Joy Manufacturing Company 500108-104 Cable Reel equipped with the newer shuttle valve. Cable sag can be adjusted on machines equipped with other cable reels and valves by referring to the manufacturer's manual and making the appropriate cable valve adjustments.

The natural effect of large ingot-size should be to increase segregation. I have previously pointed1 to the excessive segregation in many large ingots as tending to confirm this, but I have shown that in case of ingots less than 16 in. square this expected effect of ingot-size is liable to masked by that of Note.—The "maximum enrichment" of each ingot, i.e., the excess of the richest spot over the average of the whole ingot, is first calculated in percentage of that average. The average of the maximum enrichment of the several ingots of a given group is the abscissa in Fig. 1. The number beside each spot tells the number of cases which that spot represents. Under these conditions we should expect that, if large ingot-size really does tend to increase segregation, this effect would be shown by taking the average of large numbers of cases, so that the effects of these other variables might off-set and cancel each other.

The gold content of porphyry copper deposits ranges from less than 0.05 g/t to more than I g/t ((0.0017 to 0.035 oz per st) and the average is about 0.05 g/t (0.0017 oz per st) gold. Perhaps the highest grade mineralization found near a porphyry cop¬per deposit is the Ok Tedi Gold Cap ore body whose grade falls in the 2 to 3 g/t (0.07 to 0.1 oz per st) range. It is difficult to define a gold-rich por¬phyry copper deposit. All porphyry copper ore bodies contain some gold, but there seems to be a fairly sharp break in the gold content at about 0.1 g/t (0.003 oz per st) gold. There is also a problem in identifying dis¬seminated gold deposits that may have an indirect relationship to porphyry copper systems. This relationship is clear cut in deposits such as the Ok Tedi Gold Cap, the El Hueso deposit, the Fortitude and West de¬posits at Battle Mountain, NV, and the Sur¬prise deposit at Ely, NV. There are many other bulk disseminated, epithermal-type gold deposits - McCoy, NV, for example - that might be related to a porphyry system but where this relationship is remains very uncertain. In such places as the Goldfields and Tonapah district in Ne¬vada and in the El Indio, Chile district, there may be a vertically stacked ore deposit rela¬tionship between near surface epithermal deposits and disseminated molybdenite and chalcopyrite enargite mineralization at depth that may represent a deep porphyry system. This, however, has not been positively demonstrated. Most of the bulk epithermal gold deposits are probably not related to porphyry copper systems. Exceptions would probably be Ok Tedi, El Indio, El Hueso, Battle Mountain, and Lepanto where vertical or lateral zoning relationships are more apparent. This author believes that porphyry copper systems are related to a relatively unique type of intrusion that is probably distinct from, for example, the McCoy intrusivebody. For that reason, deposits such as McCoy, Chimney Creek, and the like will not be included in the definition of gold-rich por¬phyry copper deposits for this article. The interpretation of the origin of several of the deposits previously mentioned are subject to an unusual amount of contro¬versy. In this paper, an evaluation about the process mineralogy of the rich iron mine in Mongolia with comprehensive methods is given; this provides foundation of the comprehensive recovery of iron and cobalt in the ore. The research shows that the iron?s grade is 61.23%, Co?s grade is 0.02%, the ore is rich iron ore and its Co content also reaches border mining grade. For the ore, if want get high grade iron concentrate powder, must identify the mineral composition and the occurrence of iron and take into ac-count the recovery of Co content as associated resources. Chemical phase analysis results show that 86.35% of iron exists in magnetite, which means that the theoretical recovery ratio of iron is close to 86%. Minerals spectrum analysis confirmed that the magnetite containing a small amount of Mg, Al, and other impurities, the actual iron minerals to 70.28%, which means that theoretically iron grade iron concentrate only close to 70.28%. Based on the result of iron chemical phase analysis, by investigating the liberation of sulfide minerals and gangue, the recovery index of iron can be forecasted, when grinding fineness is 35%, 45%, 55% and 65% bellow 0.074mm,theoretical content of Fe in iron concentrate separately is 67.71%,67.88%,68.78%,and 69.43%,accordingly the theoretical recovery of Fe is 87.38%,87.05%,86.92% and 86.63%. From the perspective of process mineralogy, the forecast mineral beneficiation indicators show that the ore is easy sorting ore, iron processing operations have higher recovery rate, but wants sorting of high-grade iron ore concentrate still need appropriate grinding fineness. Furthermore, associated element Co, existing mostly in pyrite and pyrrhotite, is valuable in the ore. Pyrite and pyrrhotite have ideal liberation under grinding, so cobalt can be easily enriched in sulfide concentrate.

The City of Manchester is hosting the 2002 Commonwealth Games. A world class Stadium with a 38,000 capacity was commissioned for a site located close to the City Centre. The Stadium location is in an area that was derelict and in need of regeneration and it is envisaged that the Stadium will be the spur for this. The industrial and residential history of the site has left a legacy of buried foundations together with chemically contaminated soils. This Made Ground deposit overlies Glacial Deposits which in turn overlie bedrocks of the Central Manchester Coalfield. Coal mining has taken place from at least 1761 leaving several worked seams and shafts. In order to support the stadium, 1159 conventional augured piles of 600 to 1200mm diameters were used. This paper will deal primarily with the piling operations and testing, but will also discuss the coal seam treatment with respect to piling. A substantial trial pile test programme was carried out together with 11 static load tests on contract piles. The results of the pile tests will be discussed and conclusions drawn.

Exhaust emissions were measured from 25 aircraft turbine engines using Jet A fuel. Analytical apparatus, procedures, and results are described. Carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, nitric oxide, nitrogen dioxide, and aldehydes were measured at engine operating modes representing power levels used in airline operation. Carbon monoxide, hydrocarbon, and aldehyde emissions were highest at idle and lowest at takeoff; oxides of nitrogen were lowest at idle and highest at takeoff. Of the total oxides of nitrogen emitted, nitrogen dioxide constituted from 10 to 100 pct, depending on the exhaust gas temperature. Engines retrofitted with smoke-reducing burner cans produced less carbon monoxide, hydrocarbon, and aldehyde emissions, and slightly more oxides of nitrogen then engines with standard burner cans.

Picking up abandoned mining tenements and looking to recover remnant resources around old operations is an opportunity that comes with its own challenges and risks. Reliance on information released to government departments (such as the Department of Mines and Petroleum (DMP) in Western Australia) by the previous owners, can compound the risk.This paper explores Alto Metals Ltd’s Lord Nelson and Lord Henry deposits and surrounds near the town of Sandstone in Western Australia. The Lord Nelson and Lord Henry open pits produced around 2 Mt of ore for over 250 koz of gold during production between 1999 and 2010. There has been no further work carried out in the area between 2010 and 2016. The deposits are open at depth and along strike.Alto Metals picked up the tenements in 2016 and has subsequently re-estimated remnant resources around Lord Nelson and Lord Henry, and publicly reported updated Mineral Resources in accordance with the JORC Code 2012.All of the information was manually compiled from data released to the DMP and annual reports. The most common technique used to suppress respirable coal dust in air is that of spraying with fine water particles. The water droplets are typically much larger than respirable dust particles and they collect dust particles mainly by interception. Dust collection efficiencies can be improved by reducing the droplet size and in- creasing the droplet velocity. This is typically done by reducing the surface tension of water and increasing the water pressure. Dust collection efficiency can be further improved by in- creasing the electrical attraction between the water and dust particles through electrostatic charging. A technique developed by Conoco accomplishes both surface tension reduction and electrostatic charging by discharging weak solutions of surfactants in water at high pressures, 13.8 to 27.6 MPa (2000 to 4000 psi) in an intrinsically safe manner. The paper de- scribes the process and presents related dust suppression data.

In this work, we propose to implement machine learning methods for the automatic classification of mining-related seismic data. The approach retained for the classification is based on a Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) which has been tested and applied to two different mining datasets: the active ore mine of Garpenberg (Sweden), currently under exploitation, and the abandoned coal mine of Gardanne (France), where mining stopped in 2003. The first step of the approach consists in creating a well classified (manually) database of seismic signals separated in different classes as a function of the seismic sources. The selected database is then divided into two groups: train, containing the 70% of the signals, and test, which contains the remaining 30% of the signals within the selected database. The learning phase of the algorithm consists in creating a classification model based on the train group, which is further validated on the test group. The application of CNN for the automatic classification of Garpenberg and Gardanne seismic data shows, respectively, that about 88% and 98% of the seismic events of the two sites can be properly classified. These results demonstrate that machine learning could be a powerful tool for microseismic monitoring in mining and post-mining environments, which could be further extended to the whole automatic processing of seismic data, including signal’s classification as well as microseismic event’s localization.

INTRODUCTION Direct reduction of iron ores has unquestionably become established as an important step in the worldwide steelmaking industry. The history of this development has been long and fraught with difficulty. In 1800, Champlain suggested the direct reduction concept using carbon and a shallow hearth vessel. Roughly 100 years later, Jones attempted a commercial process using carbon and producer gas in a rotary kiln. During the early years of this century, numerous attempts were made to start commercial direct reduction plants using such processes as Hoganas, Wiberg, Krupp-Renn, and others. Most of these were short lived, being abandoned due to a variety of technical and economical factors. Today, however, a new generation of direct reduction processes has emerged. We enter 1977 with at least 40 commercial plants in operation using 15 processes in 14 countries. These plants have combined total annual capacity of roughly 10 million tonnes of direct reduced product. Many articles have been written, and projections made, concerning the future growth potential for direct reduction. As is al- ways the case with projections, the numbers vary, but the outlook does not. Anyone who participated in the years of effort that have gone into this field of endeavor should be excited and justly rewarded by noting the shape of the curve in Figure 1.

GEOLOGICAL problems are approached from a geometrical (space relations) viewpoint, a kinematical (time sequence) viewpoint, or a dynamical viewpoint. The first two require sound training in conventional geology and in field methods. The third approach requires a solid foundation of chemistry, physics, and mathematics. Modern training for geologists should include close integration of basic sciences with geological principles. INTRODUCTION Our knowledge of the earth has increased tremendously during the last half century. We know more about its surface configuration, the distribution of its natural resources, the procession of living forms that inhabited it in the past, the chemical composition of its oceans, the areal distribution of its surface rocks, the movements of its atmosphere, and so on. Not only do we know more facts about the earth, but we have a better understanding of the processes that take place on and within it, such as the nature of earthquakes, the thermodynamics of the atmosphere, the chemical equilibria involved in the formation of igneous rocks, the mechanics of stream flow, the dynamics of the earth's origin, and so on. Many sciences contributed to the sum total of this knowledge, including such established disciplines as geology, geography, physics, chemistry, astronomy, biology. Out of this accumulation of new knowledge grew also a group of new sciences, such as seismology, oceanography, meteorology, volcanology, hydrology. Collectively these latter are known as the geophysical and geochemical sciences, and to a large extent they began as branches of geology. Until the turn of the century, for example, the study of earthquakes (seismology) was a part of geology, although as early as 1846 Mallet, a physicist, had suggested that the subject could be investigated by elastic-wave theory. Comparatively little progress was made along these lines until the seismograph was developed near the turn of the century; since then, additional earthquake data have accumulated rapidly, but more important, the interpretation of these data essentially has kept pace with their accumulation. In similar fashion, meteorology was generally considered a branch of geology as recently as one or two decades ago. Considerable progress had been made in such aspects as weather forecasting, but the science dates its recent rapid rise from the year 1911, when Bjerknes first applied the principles of dynamics to the analysis of air masses. The rapid development of such disciplines as oceanography, volcanology and hydrology was due in part to the application of principles of chemical equilibrium, of dynamics, and of thermodynamics to earth problems, by men who were essentially physicists or chemists by training. The last half century, therefore, and particularly the last two decades, saw the influx of numerous chemists and physicists into the realm of the earth sciences. "In this study, the recycling conditions of waste liquor obtained after the production of tungsten boride powder from calcium tungstate by self-propagating high temperature synthesis (SHS) and the following hydrochloric acid leaching were investigated in detail. Environmentally unfriendly and extremely acidic (pH~ -0.3) liquor consisting of calcium, magnesium, and boron ions was treated with 1 M sodium carbonate solution to precipitate magnesium carbonate and calcium carbonate phases. The obtained amorphous precipitates were heated up to the temperature of 400°C for re-crystallization. As a result, MgO, CaC03 and CaMg(C03)z phases were obtained, while sodium, boron, chlorine ions were remain in the solution. The present study is still in progress.IntroductionSelf-propagating high temperature synthesis (SHS) is one of the techniques used in the production of a variety of advanced ceramics, inter-metallic, organic and inorganic compounds, oxygen free single crystals, and polymers [ 1, 2]. The reaction becomes selfsustaining and propagates in the reactant mixture, after initiation in SHS process. SHS products may contain the mixture of several unwanted compounds and elements. Therefore following acidic leaching process may be needed to purify the target product. In the previous study, calcium tungstate (Ca W04), magnesium (Mg) and boric acid (B20 3) mixture were reacted to produce tungsten boride powder by SHS process according to the Reaction 1. Then, magnesium and calcium containing byproducts (i.e. MgO, Mg3B206 and Ca3B206) found in the SHS product were leached out by using concentrated hydrochloric acid (HCl) solution to obtain pure tungsten boride powder [3].Ca W04 + 0.5B203 + 4.5Mg = WB + 4.5Mg0 + Cao (1)After the leaching, filtrate solution consisting of different amounts of magnesium, calcium, and boron requires additional treatment for the environmentally acceptable disposal.Several works were carried out about magnesium precipitation conditions and kinetics from brines. Rabadzhieva et al. investigated the precipitation of Mg(OH)z from brines by using NaOH as well as caustic soda [ 4]. Turek ve Gnot investigated the precipitation efficiency of Mg(OH)z for the temperature range between 10-40°C, while the reaction was kinetically experimented by Alamdiri et al [5, 6]. Homogeneous precipitation of nesquehonite (MgC03.3H20) by the reaction of MgCli with (NH4)2C03 in supersaturated solutions and factors that influence the precipitation of MgC03.3H20, such as reaction temperature, initial concentration, stirring speed, titration speed, equilibration time, have been studied by Wang et al [7]. The precipitation of Mg(OH)z by calcium hydroxide from aqueous solutions was studied by Baird et al. [8]. Stratful et al. focused on conditions influencing the precipitation of magnesium ammonium phosphate from wastewaters [9]. 1031"

HOWARD N. EAVENSON, acting for the last time as president of the Institute, presided at the annual business meeting on Tuesday afternoon at 4 o'clock. He spoke briefly of his visits with Local Sections last fall, and read a scholarly address on "Mineral Fuels and Civilization," scheduled for early publication in these columns. Karl Eilers presented the Treasurer's report, showing last year's income to be $134,967.44, compared with expenses of $133.266.51. Comparable figures for 1933 were $121,689.90 and $115,462.60. The Institute's peak income was in 1923 about $208,000. Newell G. Alford read the report of the Membership Committee showing 750 new members elected and placed on the rolls in 1934, compared with 328 in 1933. Losses by resignation last year were 81, compared with 262 in 1933; and 691 were suspended for non-payment of dues, compared with 747 the year before. Total membership, including 579 Student Associates, was 7742 at the end of 1934. Applications for membership have been coming in freely the last few months.
