THE oxidation of titanium has been studied in recent years by a number of investigators.'-W ne of the most important aspects of the reaction of titanium with oxygen, which has been observed by several of the investigators, is the extremely high solubility of oxygen in the metal. A detailed study of the Ti-0 systeml% as shown that the solubility limit of oxygen in a-titanium is approximately 14.5 wt pct 0 from 800" to 1700°C. The unusual oxidation behavior of titanium may be ascribed to this phenomenon, since part of the oxygen uptake enters into solid solution in the metal and only a part is available for scale formation. A more complete study of the kinetics of oxidation of titanium would require information on the influence of oxygen in solution in the metal upon the oxidation rate. Such information would also be of interest in regard to the theory of oxidation of metals. The authors have measured the oxidation rates of oxygen-saturated and oxygen-free titanium between 800" and 1200°C and have found appreciable differences in their rates of oxygen uptake and in the activation energies. The experimental set-up was similar to that described in a previous paper.u The course of oxida-dation was followed continously by attaching the specimen to a sensitive spring balance and observing the extension of the spring with time of oxidation. High purity electrolytic oxygen was used and precautions were taken to purify the gases employed. The specimens were prepared from iodide titanium and were ground on metallographic polishing papers to a fineness of 4/0. The furnace was first evacuated and filled with argon; the specimen was lowered into the furnace, which was then evacuated and filled with oxygen, after the specimen had reached the oxidation temperature in argon. The samples were presaturated with oxygen by means of the following procedure: Each specimen was first heated in oxygen at 1200°C until its increase in weight indicated 13.8 pct by weight uptake of oxygen. The furnace was then immediately evacuated and filled with purified argon five times. The specimen was heated in the argon atmosphere for a period of 72 hr at 1200°C in order to saturate the metal with oxygen by complete absorption of the scale. The temperature was lowered to the oxidation temperature, the furnace was evacuated and filled with oxygen, and the oxidation rate was followed by noting the extension of the spring balance. No oxide film was visible on these specimens at the start of the oxidation experiments. Titanium samples in the oxygen-free as-received condition were also oxidized and their oxidation rates measured. The results are shown in Figs. 1, 2, and 3, which indicate that the initial rates of uptake of oxygen by both the oxygen-saturated and oxygen-free specimens are parabolic at these temperatures. Pyritic smelting, so-called, as practiced in the Black Hills is pyritic smelting only in the sense that Dr. John Percy uses the expression in his " Metallurgy of Silver," where he describes a process for smelting dry silver-ores in connection with iron pyrites, to form a regulus. The ores treated by this process in the Black Hills are very siliceous, averaging about 74 per cent. of silica, from 10 to 20 of iron oxide, 4 or 5 of alumina, and from 2 to 4 of lime. In 1889, while Dean of the South Dakota School of Mines, I took up the question of their smelting. There were neither copper- nor lead-ores in the Hills; hence pyrite and pyrrhotite, of which there are large deposits, were employed to form a regulus. This mixture of pyrite and pyrrhotite, besides being absolutely barren of gold and silver, carried an average of 30 per cent. of silica. The only basic material available as a flux for the great excess of silica in the ores and in the pyrite was a dolomitic limestone. Moreover, the local coke gave 24 per cent. of ash, 60 per cent. of which was silica—as unpromising a set of conditions as can well be imagined. We had before us the examples of Mr. W. Environmental awareness has become a paramount consideration in the issue of planning and licensing arrangements for the disposal of wastes associated with mining operations. In this con- text the disposal of liquid tailings is a difficult and controversial problem with regard to environmental surface disposal. The paper outlines the use of Information Systems for decision support in the safe and environmental disposal of liquid tailings linked to conventional coarse refuse operations. This offers both an economic and an aesthetic approach to a historical perception of waste tipping in the underground coal extraction industry. The paper will demonstrate a prototype system that incorporates multimedia facilities which include data such as; voice comments, site photography, site plans and fluid flow circuits.

Mintek was contracted by Oriel Resources plc in 2004 to conduct a preliminary assessment study on smelting ferronickel from the large but relatively low grade Shevchenko nickel ore deposit in Kazakhstan. A detailed feasibility study (?DFS?) was awarded to Bateman BV following promising results from the preliminary assessment study (?PAS?) and small-scale pilot plant test work. As part of the DFS, a total of 450metric tons of ore was collected from three different locations in the deposit and shipped to Mintek. After sampling, the bulk sample was prepared for smelting. This comprised crushing, screening and calcining with each step done separately for the three different lots. The chemical composition of the ore from the deposit is relatively high in silica and therefore falls out of the MgO to SiO2 range that is normally processed by pyrometallurgical means to produce ferronickel. The main objective of the testwork was to demonstrate that a method could be found and successfully applied to smelt these siliceous ores and produce an acceptable nickel-containing alloy. A 2-m ID DC arc furnace was installed with a twin-cathode (electrode) configuration to replicate the proposed commercial-scale furnace and also incorporated an advanced design of water-cooled copper panels in the lower furnace sidewalls to withstand the aggressive nature of the high SiO2-containing slags. The reductant used was a high-volatile coal from Karaganda in Kazakhstan. The reductant addition was adjusted to achieve a 90% recovery of nickel. In the assessment of the process metallurgy, some deviation from equilibrium conditions was observed. This deviation is ascribed to the intermittent existence of a smelting bath partially covered with feed during the testwork. Optimization of smelting conditions should result in the metallurgy (slag metal equilibrium) being closer to the theoretical predictions and make the production of a 20% nickel alloy possible at 90% nickel recovery. The solution for the successful processing of these siliceous ores was found in the attainment of the necessary operational stability through the control of arc length, operating temperature, open-bath smelting conditions and flux additions of up to 10% dolime for the most siliceous of the three ore types. The test work carried out by Mintek provided the basis for the process flow sheet and engineering design of the DC arc smelting furnaces for the Shevchenko Nickel project.

A series of four coal combustion experiments (I)' was conducted at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, Pittsburgh Research Laboratory in the Safety Research Coal Mine to evaluate the response of optical and ionization smoke and CO sensors to a small 0.61 m square smoldering coal fire which transitions to flaming combustion in the presence of diesel emissions. With the increased utilization of diesel engines in underground coal mines, it is important to be able to discriminate fire products-of-combustion (POC) from diesel emissions. One proposed method to accomplish this is the deployment and interpretation of multiple sensors.

Solvent extraction, cementation, ion exchange resin and precipitation methods may be used for the treatment of this kind of solution. In this study, solvent extraction of Ni (II) is investigated by using two kinds of extractants in order to clarify the relationship between extraction equilibrium (static synergistic effect) and extraction rate (dynamic synergistic effect) for several extractant mixtures. The static synergistic effect does not take place significantly for the extractant mixtures of acidic extractants and neutral organphosphorous compounds, while a large static synergistic effect is confirmed when the extractant mixtures of acidic extractants and nitrogen-containing compounds are used. Nickel ions can be extracted in the wide pH range of 3.0-8.0 without any pH adjustment by using the several extractant mixtures. At the same time, the extraction rate remarkably increases by using the extractant mixtures of acidic extractants and nitrogen-containing compounds.

A discussion of the practicalities of carrying out a material balance using simple nodal sensitivity analysis is given. The calculation of the errors involved is reviewed and the concept of co-variance examined through computer simulation. The use of co-variances in such calculations is shown to be practically insignificant. The method proves to be rapid and relatively accurate provided the circuit topology is correct.

THE Greenwood-Grand Forks area of southern central British Columbia, known as the Boundary District, has a long history of mining exploration and production. At the turn of the century this was the premier copper mining camp in the British Empire, its total production amounting to some 20 mil- lion tons. Most of this ore came from the great Granby mines at Phoenix, but the Motherlode mine at Deadwood camp, 6 miles to the west, and several mines in Summit camp, 5 miles north of Phoenix, made important contributions. The large deposits were exhausted in 1918 and the district since has seen only desultory exploration and salvage operations. The orebodies are mineralized skarn zones in limestone members of a thick series of Upper Paleozoic sedimentary and volcanic strata. Chalcopyrite is the primary ore-mineral. Copper carbonates and silicates occur sparingly in outcrops, but the oxidized zone generally is very shallow. Much of the surface is mantled by glacial drift which in most places ranges in thickness from 2 to 15 ft. In some of the hanging valleys, however, the glacial drift may be as much as 100 ft thick and may assume drumlin-like forms.

Scientific and technical research is becoming an expensive business, and needs to be managed as well as directed. Regardless of whether it operates under public or private auspices, a research-and development organization should not tolerate inefficiency or irrelevance. Its true worth is ultimately decided by the impact it makes on its environment. Doing the right things is preferable to merely doing things in the right way. Clear definition and the setting of goals form the crux of the Management by Objectives (MBO) system. This system provides the research establishment with a profound sense of purpose and direction, which is essential for effective planning and control. Performance standards, in association with costs and manpower, value assessment, feedback, and improvement, tend to follow naturally once the principle of a results-oriented management system is adopted. MBO is a participative management system, leading to decentralization and self-control of the individual rather than imposed control. If wisely implemented with the necessary respect for creative work, it can enhance the job satisfaction of the research worker as well as the overall productivity ofthe research establishment.

Because of the coincidental location of orebodies and population in Australia, the mineral sands industry has been subjected to numerous land use conflicts, resulting in the sterilisation of strategic ore reserves and a severe downturn of activity in the eastern states. All tiers of government of various political persuasions were responsible for the decisions leading to this sterilisation. As such, it became a community response to intense land use pressure along an attractive and popular coastline. The resultant high public exposure of the industry has placed it in the forefront of developments in rehabilitation technology. In eastern Australia, the industry has operated in a wide range of ecosystems, many with conservation values. Rehabilitation ech- niques have been developed to suit these varied conditions, and much of this technology is now widely adopted throughout the mining industry. Land use considerations in Western Australia are somewhat different to those of the eastern states. Nevertheless, the same basic principles of rehabilitation apply with modification to suit local conditions and land use objectives. The development of rehabilitation in both Eastern and Western Australia is reviewed, and the direction of future trends is indicated.

A methodology is presented for finding feasible or locally optimal designs in the class of homogeneous, countercurrent, processing networks performing two-component non-sharp separations. The advantage of the methodology developed here is that given a set of independent performance criteria (specifications such as network separation factor, beneficiation ratio or recovery), a feasible or locally optimal countercurrent network design meeting those criteria can be found in one step. In the methodology, graph-theory was used to explicitly obtain the exact network responses of specific countercurrent networks. These responses were used to formulate the linear recursion equations whose solution gives the expressions for the countercurrent network responses which are a function of the stage transfer functions for two-component, non-sharp separations. These expressions are also functions of the network variables n and c. These expressions, together with the set of independent design criteria, were solved simultaneously for n and c using the Levenberg-Marquardt algorithm for systems of constrained, non-linear equations. The network variables n and c embody the coded network design information which is used to find the feasible network design which satisfies the set of independent performance criteria.

SURVEYING of many holes drilled by the U. S. Bureau of Mines in the Metaline district has shown surprising deviations. The holes start in the Ledbetter slate (Ordovician) and pass into the underlying gently dipping Metaline limestone (Cambrian) at varying depths, locally in excess of 1000 ft. All holes start vertical, but one had deflected as much as 35° at a depth of only 300 ft. One hole was found to be deflected 70° at a depth of 1000 ft. These deviations were not indicated to the drillers by any action of the rods or machines. Analysis of the survey data in the light of the observed geology indicates that the holes deviate most in the Ledbetter slate and scarcely at all in the Metaline limestone. The upper part of the "limestone"' in most holes is a massive rock strongly altered by hydrothermal action and essentially homogeneous. The slate is only obscurely bedded but has a cleavage, varying from slight to strong, which is unrelated to bedding. Drill holes have deflected to become nearly perpendicular to the cleavage. Several plans and cross sections are submitted showing the behavior of various holes.

THREE years ago, when the Process Research Laboratory at Allis-Chalmers Manufacturing Co. sought a remedy for the increasing cost of disposing of great quantities of spent sands from foundries, R. C. Edwards developed a continuous inclined paddle scrubber which removed a substantial amount of the charred coatings from the grains with a surprisingly small amount of degradation of the sand itself.1 The satisfactory results obtained on foundry sand, using this piece of equipment in conjunction with classification, suggested that a similar procedure could probably be applied to the cleaning of other sands, such as those required by the glass and chemical industries. This paper describes the flowsheet and the results of tests performed on impure natural sands. The four materials tested were silica sands obtained from widely separated geographical areas. Three of the sands tested contained various amounts of iron oxide and the fourth an excessive amount of calcareous bonding material. The iron oxide was present predominantly in the form of grain coatings, which were scuffed by the paddle scrubber, and in all cases a product was manufactured which would meet one of the sets of specifications imposed by the glass industry' The Edwards paddle scrubber used in these tests consists of a rubber-lined steel cylinder 18 in. in diam and 48 in. long, mounted on a frame so that its slope can be varied 5 ° to 35º from horizontal. This variable slope permits controlled flow of material through the machine. Rubber paddles rotate inside the cylinder and are secured to a center shaft 2 in. square, which extends through the entire length and is turned at both ends so that it can be supported by sleeve bearings centrally fixed in the end plates of the shell. At the upper or feed end it extends through the bearing on the end plate into a sheave, to which the motor drive is connected by means of Texrope transmission. The four sets of paddles mounted on the shaft, two in each set, are made of rubber belting, 1/4 in. thick, 9 in. wide, and 16 in. long. The two paddles in each set are secured on opposite sides of the square shaft, but in the same longitudinal position along the shaft axis. In other words, the two paddles in the set operate 180° apart. Each successive set is mounted 90º from the preceding one. One end of each paddle is bolted to the square shaft and the other weighted by a steel bar, 1x1 ½ x9 in. long, which is attached about 1/ 2 in. from the outer tip of the paddle. By centrifugal force at proper shaft speed, these weights force the paddle surface to rub smoothly against the rubber lining of the cylinder. During operation, the sand forces its way between the paddle face and the surface of the cylinder, providing the necessary abrading action as the pulp flows by gravity down the length of the cylinder. The capacity of the machine is limited by the amount and the hardness of the coating material and by the quality of product desired. Minerals are mined as a one-time crop, and the processing of one ton of ore results in there being one ton less to be recovered from the deposit. Although some minerals occur in greater abundance than others, they are to a greater or lesser degree exhaustible. Depletion Allowances One of the distinctive features of the mineral industries is the allowance for depletion. The depletion allowance is a much maligned and misunderstood principal of our tax structure. Although imperfect in design, it has nevertheless served as a constructive incentive for the development and expansion of the minerals industry.

An extensive program of marked ball wear testing (MBWT), laboratory corrosion studies, and worn ball surface analyses has been used to gain insight about the role of corrosion in the overall wear process. In some environments, localized corrosion is observed; the actual wear mechanisms in such cases are pitting/spalling and abrasion. Factors affecting the occurrence of pitting include the abrasiveness of the ore, corrosivity of the slurry, corrosion resistance of the media, and galvanic coupling effects. Elimination of pitting substantially improves overall wear resistance. When pitting is not observed, the contributions of general corrosion are significantly less.

The ability to process complex precious metal sulfide concentrates containing antimony and arsenic in an economic and environmentally safe manner is an important problem facing the mining industry in the United States. Preliminary experiments have been performed to evaluate the possibility of treating a complex sulfide concentrate to recover antimony and precious metals while fixing the arsenic and sulfur as calcium arsenate and calcium sulfate. The process involves: • the oxidation of the antimony and arsenic minerals in the presence of soda ash (to collect the sulfur dioxide and to keep the antimony and arsenic from forming volatile compounds), •the selective leaching of the arsenic from the roast calcine with a heated caustic solution, •the precipitation of the arsenic and sulfate with calcium hydroxide and/or calcium chloride, •the reduction of the residual antimony (collecting the precious metals), •fuming of the metal to form a marketable antimony oxide, and •crucible reduction of the residue to obtain a gold and silver dore. Batch experiments, using synthetic concentrates of stibnite and arsenopyrite, were performed to evaluate the first stage of this process. Variables studied included mixture weight fractions, temperature, gas flow rate, oxygen partial pressure, and time. All of the off gas dust and sulfur containing gases were collected and analyzed. The roast solid residues were subjected to arsenic leach tests, and the leach solutions were subjected to arsenic and sulfate precipitation tests. Introduction The ability to treat a precious metal ore containing appreciable amounts of antimony and arsenic is dependent upon the characteristics of the ore. For some ores, selective flotation can be used to separate the antimony and arsenic minerals, which are then treated separately. Unfortunately, many ores are not treatable in this way, and the concentrates obtained may contain appreciable contamination (which limits the ability to make acceptable grade antimony products). If we consider the added value of the precious metals in the concentrate, then it is worthwhile to evaluate the potential for new methods to treat these types of concentrates. In addition, the environmental difficulties associated with arsenic disposal must be taken into account in any proposed process. If there is appreciable arsenic present, then it must be either recovered as a marketable product or placed in an insoluble form. The problem addressed in this research program has become increasingly important as the precious metals mining industry is encountering more ores of this type. A large deposit of this type exists in Idaho where the antimony occurs primarily as stibnite, with minor amounts of kermesite and tetrahedrite (Cooper, 1951). The gold appears in association with arsenopyrite with minor amounts of other arsenic minerals. Flotation has been used to obtain an antimony concentrate. The concentrate, however, is contaminated with appreciable amounts of arsenic and also contains precious metals. If the ore or concentrate contains appreciable amounts of base metals, then the recovery process becomes much more difficult. There are a number of other known deposits of this type in Alaska, Canada, Montana and elsewhere. The objective of this research program was to develop a fundamental understanding of the oxidation and leaching chemistry of the arsenic and antimony minerals so that technology may be developed to treat these ores in an economic and environmentally safe manner. Wendt (1949) and Koster and Royer (1940) discussed the possibilities of oxidative roasting of stibnite concentrates containing arsenic. Wendt describes a process used at a smelter in Czechoslovakia (in the 1930s) where roasting was carried out in rotary furnaces at 723° K (500° C). Most of the arsenic was removed as fume, as well as 25% of the antimony. No sulfur dioxide containment was described. The oxide fume from the furnace went to a heated caustic water leach, where the arsenic was preferentially dissolved and then precipitated with calcium chloride as calcium arsenate following solid-liquid separation. The antimony oxide was sold, and the solid oxide discharge from the rotary furnace was sent to a blast furnace where the antimony metal, containing the precious metals, was recovered. The excavation of sandstone of generally medium strength for the Liverpool Link Line by Dosco Mark 2A Roadheaders has demonstrated the versatility and good performance of road- headers in suitable rock formations. A description is given of the strata traversed by the tunnels together with descriptions of equipment and crews, excavation sequences, operating difficulties and the results achiev- ed. In addition tunnel construction is des- cribed for a difficult section where there was only O.Sm clearance between invert and a four lane vehicular tunnel below, and O.5m clearance between tunnel crown and a century old sewer above.

Most publicity about the copper industry nowa- days is focused on the adequacy of ore reserves and on excessive mining capacity. These concerns, stemming from public awareness of actual and poten- tial shortages and oversupplies, relate to production rather than consumption. Perhaps the reason for this one-sided view is that copper is thought of as a commodity which is conspicuously traded in world markets, rather than as one of many industrial materials that serve today's rapidly changing tech- nology. Copper differs from other widely traded com- modities in that its real cost of production has pro- gressively increased since World War II. The reasons for the increase are identifiable by analyzing operations in one of the world's large producing centres, the copper province of Arizona. Another respect in which copper differs from some other com- modities is that increases in demand occur less auto- matically in the case of copper than they tend to in commodities whose consumption is more directly related to population growth. The copper industry's current inability to generate and attract needed investment capital is attributable to these differences between copper and other com- modities; it suggests that the concept of copper purely as a commodity is outdated. The key to the problem is better integration between the activities of copper producers and users. Depending on cir- cumstances, integration takes various forms- for example, investment tied to long-term sales con- tracts between producers in developing countries and consumers overseas; common ownership of pro- ducing and manufacturing facilities in industrialized

Selection of mining methods, stope dimensions and stoping sequences is usually based on comparisons with other similar orebodies or rocktypes. Rock mechanics principles assist the process, which can be further improved by application of rock mechanics' models - in particular, computer based stress analysis techniques. These models vary in capabilities and potential application but, basically, can be subdivided into techniques which only model the surface of excavations, and those which model the total volume to be analysed. To address the wide range of geometries, stoping methods and sequences, and geomechanical environments at Mount Isa Mines, a number of models have been developed. By presenting examples of their actual and potential application it is demonstrated that appropriate use of these techniques will assist in the determination of mining parameters and improve ore recovery. Examples presented cover sequencing in tabular and massive orebodies, location of shafts and shaft pillars, and backfill and hanging-wall stability. It is concluded that surface techniques are more appropriate for regional analyses and volume techniques are more suited to analyses of detailed, local geometry. Colour computer graphics should be an integral part of data preparation, and results interpretation and Presentation.
