Refractory gold ores and auriferous concentrates containing silver tend to form refractory silver jarosites during pressure oxidation. Earlier work with pure Ag2S has shown that the addition of iodine species to the autoclave feed yields cyanide soluble iodargyrite (Agl) instead. Near complete silver extractions from the autoclave product were obtained at a I-/Ag+ ratio of 5 or more. This paper reports on the pressure oxidation and cyanide leaching of two industrial refractory (arseno) pyritic silver-bearing concentrates: 1. from Peru (sulphosalts) and 2. from the USA (pyrite, with acanthite occlusions). While using a I-/Ag+ mol ratio of only 1 in the feed, it has been possible to obtain 98 and 97% Ag extraction from the two autoclave products by cyanide leaching, respectively. This compares to 11 and 54% Ag extraction from the as-received concentrates and 4 and 15% Ag extraction, respectively, after pressure oxidation without KI present. The results of the testwork are discussed in terms of concentrate mineralogy and pressure oxidation conditions.

PART I.-GASES IN INDUSTRY INTRODUCTION THE part played by gases in industry can be considered from at least four distinct viewpoints, viz: (1) As air to support combustion and life and do various kinds of work (2) As fuel, or as essential to certain chemical processes (3) As sources of danger from explosion or fire ( 4) As hazards to man's health The present paper deals with gases only insofar as they are sources of danger, or are hazards to health. It may be noted, however, that, in point of tonnage, air is one of the most important materials handled in any industrial plant. In the operations of the Consolidated Mining and Smelting Company, for example, 138,000 tons of air are handled daily, the only material exceeding this figure being water. The United States Bureau of Mines has listed no fewer than seventy-four gases and vapours that, under certain conditions, may be considered as ex-plosive or dangerous (poisonous). ISASMELT™ technology is based on the use of an elegant furnace system design which uses submerged lance technology to provide highly efficient mixing and reaction of feed materials in a molten slag bath. Within Peru the ISASMELT™ technology has been applied to the Southern Copper Ilo Smelter, part of Grupo Mexico. Southern Copper selected the ideal technology to meet their sulphur capture and particulate emissions requirements whilst minimising capital and operating costs. The commissioning of the ISASMELT™ in 2007 marked the modernisation of the primary smelting section of their smelter, with traditional batch converters still used for the secondary smelting stage of the copper production flowsheet.

Airblasts have been monitored at four coal strip mines and at a limestone quarry. Thirty-seven production blasts have been monitored with three seismographs, resulting in one hundred and eleven complete air pressure records. Instrumentation selection use is described. Data analysis includes an assessment of the predictability of peak overpressures by means of the cube root scaled distance law. It is found that predictability for the cases studied here is not good. An extensive discussion of possible explanations is included. A detailed analysis of the frequency content of the observed airblasts, of considerable importance in evaluating potential annoyance problems, has been made for all records. A computer program has been written to simulate airblasts induced by multiple-hole blasts. A series of small experimental blasts have been detonated and monitored in order to allow an assessment of the program. It is clear that airblasts, especially when induced by very small charges and monitored at very close distances, are highly sensitive to detonation times. Retrofitting of airblast records occasionally was possible, but considerably improved field work is required to validate or refute the computer model.

A relatively small area in Malaya, about 200 miles long by 40 miles wide, is the most important source of tin in the world. Some tin is recovered in other parts of the peninsula. Of the tin mined, 98 pct is recovered from alluvial deposits. From 1935 to 1941 the average annual world production of tin was 190,000 tons. The average annual production from Malaya during the same period was 62,000 tons or about one third of the total. Other producing countries, in order of importance, were the Netherlands East Indies 34,000 tons, Bolivia 30,000, Belgian Congo, Nigeria, Siam, Burma, China, and a few others with smaller amounts. The serious shortage of tin during the war period was due to the fact that the Japanese were occupying Malaya, Netherlands East Indies, Siam, Burma, and China which, together, formerly were producing 65 pct of the world supply.

Since the return of the Petroleum and Natural Gas Division of the Bureau of Mines to normal peacetime functions following World War II, a coordinated program of oil and gas development and production research has been in prog- ress, and the importance of the problems has been evaluated so that the Bureau can render greater service to the oil and gas industry. Among the problems associated with development and production research, those concerned with efficient utilization of the Nation's reserves of hydro- carbons contained in gas-condensate type reservoirs continue to receive major emphasis. For a number of years an important part of the Bureau's work has been the study of two pressing problems associated with production from such reservoirs; first; an investigation of fluid properties, and the second, finding a means of controlling corrosion. Studies of the characteristics of gas-condensate fluids have resulted in the publication of a number of reports, which cover a broad field. In general they deal with subjects such as the properties of a fluid from a well; development of research equipment, means of combatting corrosion, and the many aspects of gas-condensate engineering. To provide experimental data on relative liquid and gas volumes and critical pressures and temperatures, a windowed cell was constructed that permits ob- servation of the fluid phase while making the tests. Experimentation in the field on the use of inhibitors to control corro- sion of equipment in gas-condensate wells has disclosed that solutions of chromate are effective retardants of corrosion. Engineering field studies of the Carthage and New Hope gas-condensate fields are in progress, and reports on the Sheridan and Lake Creek fields have been completed. The oxidative degradation kinetics of chalcopyrite have been studied by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The obtained data are necessary for the kinetic description of the flash fusion process, which can contribute to the optimization of the smelting process in copper extractive metallurgy. Activation energy (Ea) evolutions of the involved processes have been determined by several isoconversional methods; in this sense, the chalcopyrite oxidation processes could be adequately described, among studied models (E1641–16, Ozawa–Flynn–Wall, Kissinger–Akahira–Sunose and Friedman), by the Kissinger–Akahira– Sunose kinetic model. Using this method, Ea and A values are found to be very dependent on the conversion. Under lower conversion levels, higher Ea and A values have been calculated with respect to that found for medium and higher conversion levels.

The objectives of this study were to examine a representative cross section of formal safety analysis techniques developed for the nuclear and aerospace industries, to recommend those methods that would be suitable for application to the mining industry, and to include those methods in a user's manual. Volume XI of this report, the user's manual, describes several methods that were determined to be immediately transferrable to the mining industry. The handbook gives detailed instructions on appropriate application and utilization of the methods. Other techniques will require further development before they can be effectively transferred to the mining industry.

The fact is that part of provided energy to aluminum production smelters will be lost as waste heat and it never used for aluminum production. One part of waste heat is escaping from the potroom exhaust gases, which was studied for possible recovery in a desalination plant to produce distilled water and the paper was presented in 2011 TMS Annual Meeting. However, it was shown that waste heat recovery plant to produce distilled water is highly profitable but the main fact is that the exhaust gases from potroom are highly corrosive, abrasive and dusty. The main challenge for desalination plant construction, which is using aluminum smelter exhaust gases as the main heat source, is the highly corrosive environment that makes the situation difficult and complicated for equipments design and plant construction. In this paper, we are trying to study a detailed investigation regarding the heat exchangers fouling, corrosion in heat exchangers including heat exchangers' material, how often we need to shut down the plant for maintenance or cleaning, and plant thermal efficiency with considering fouling."

While systems to remove sulfur oxides from flue gases have been used at coal fired power plants since 1931, critical need for flue gas desulfurization has only occurred since the late 1960s following the passage of the Clean Air Act Amendments. Commercial and advanced flue gas desulfurization processes (FGD) are reviewed. Advantages and disadvantages of the processes are discussed. Regulatory requirements leading to the development of FGD systems are identified. The location and operation of coal fired plants may be determined more and more by the regulatory requirements for sludge disposal, waste, water discharge and air emissions.

Dust generation data have been obtained from 19 industrial Outokumpu flash furnaces. Statistical analyses of the data have been carried out and the most significant factors affecting dust generation evaluated. The results indicate that dust production may most effectively be minimized by: 1) Minimizing the distance between the molten slag and the furnace roof 2) Optimizing burner design and combustion parameters.

"Iron aluminides hold great promise for intermediate temperature applications (to ~ 600°C) because of their excellent oxidation and sulphidation resistance and good strength. However, they have poor low temperature ductility, a feature which is exacerbated by water-containing environments. This paper presents an overview of the effects of environment on the ductility of iron aluminides, including the effects of iron aluminum ratio; ternary alloying additions, particularly boron; strain rate; and temperature. The mechanisms involved in water-induced embrittlement are discussed.IntroductionOver the last few years, it has became increasingly evident that the ductility and fracture toughness of many intermetallic compounds, particularly aluminides, are reduced dramatically if they are mechanically tested in either air or in hydrogen-containing atmospheres (1-5). For FeAI and Fe3AI, it has been shown that water vapor, for example in air at room temperature, can form atomic hydrogen by reacting with the Al atoms (1, 2). As a result in iron aluminides, the environmental embrittlement process is quite similar to traditional hydrogen embrittlement. This can be easily demonstrated by either testing an iron aluminide in an environment free of the deleterious species or by testing at high strain rates, both of which result in greater ductility. The purpose of this paper is to review recent progress in understanding environmental embrittlement in FeAI and Fe3AI, and to consider possible environmental embrittlement mechanisms. Greater understanding of this phenomenon will lead ultimately to remedies to this problem which is a major reason for preventing the practical application of these materials. Although blasting remains the most inexpensive method of fragmentation in hardrock mining, the significance of the costs of blast-induced rockmass damage in terms of mining efficiency and safety is becoming increasingly recognized. There is no straightforward and systematic method of adequately measuring blast damage in on-going mining operations. This paper considers various techniques available to measure blast damage, making particular reference to recent underground hardrock mine studies. It concludes by proposing a damage audit procedure for integration into routine mine production control.

This preliminary bulletin was written as the first of a series of several on the significance of drafts in steam-boiler practice, the succeeding bulletins to be along the same lines but of a more advanced character. The conclusions arrived at are tentative, and are the result of a study of one of the many problems growing out of a general plan of the United States Government to increase the efficiency with which the coals of the country are being used. Greater efficiency requires better boiler and furnace design. The experimental study of drafts on which the conclusions presented in this bulletin are based formed part of the fuel-testing investigations that were carried on by the technologic branch of the United States Geological Survey and have been transferred to the Bureau of Mines. The experiments made seem to indicate that it is possible to double or treble the capacity of a plant without making any radical changes the furnaces and boilers. These increases require about double and treble the quantities of air to be put through the fuel beds and boilers. It also seems probable that rebafHing the boilers will often permit the capacity to be doubled or trebled, while still getting more steam than formerly per pound of coal for uses outside the boiler room. These experiments were undertaken with the object of clarifying ideas concerning the passage of air through fuel beds and boilers. Measured weights of air were passed through two beds of lead shot, series, one of which remained always the same and represented a boiler; the other being varied as to size of shot and depth of bed, and representing a fuel bed. Careful observations were made of the weight of air passing through the beds per minute. All data were plotted in many charts, so as to permit the study of them from several points of view. A number of laws were deduced bearing on the relative amounts of power required to force air through fuel beds of various thicknesses, composed of various sizes of coal, and through boilers of various lengths and areas of gas passages. An important part of the discussion relates to an increase in the capacity of boilers by increasing the amount of power applied to pressure and exhausting fans and thus forcing several times as much air through the fuel beds and boilers. may be possible, as a result of these investigations, to raise the rate of working the boiler heating surface to three or even four times its present value. Such an increase would undoubtedly mean new designs of grates, stokers, furnaces, and boilers, especially fitted for high rates of working. Fan equipments designed to supply three or four times as much air under several times the pressure would be provided with more efficient engines, thus giving an additional factor favoring high-capacity working. It must be borne in mind, as stated above, that the results are tentative. It will cost money to force gases at high speeds through fuel beds and boilers, and there will soon be pressing need of such quantitative data as will enable the largest possible part of the energy imparted by the fans to be advantageously utilized. The mining industry of the United States has long been severely criti- cized because of its high rate of accident occurrence, not only as compared with other industries of the United States but also with the mining industries of other countries, particularly Europe. Statistics, often not strictly com- parable, indicate that the accident-frequency rate in all mining is currently about three times and the accident-severity rate is about seven times as great as the average for general industrial work in the United States. These fig- ures are by no means comforting to humanitarian mining men, irrespective of their status in the industry, and they constitute a challenge that certainly cannot continue to be ignored much longer. The picture becomes much darker when the above statistics are augmented with data indicating that on an exposure basis our mines (more particularly our coal mines) have accident rates two, three, or even more times as great as more or less similar mines in Europe, particularly England, Wales, Belgium, France, and Germany. The sting is alleviated to some extent by the knowledge that our coal mines produce about 4 to 5 times as much coal per man day as is produced in at least some European mines. However, all of these foreign acci- dent statistics should be analyzed carefully before we become very much con- cerned about them, because they are not strictly comparable, for several reasons, not the least of which is the fact that foreign methods of compiling or recording accident statistics often differ materially from ours. Moreover, foreign mining and other conditions are definitely dissimilar to ours in many phases, and numerous other factors affect the comparability of foreign mine- accident statistics with those of the United States. Unquestionably, it should also be taken into consideration that the accident rate of the 140,000,000 or more constituting the populace of the United States as a whole is much higher than that of any other major country in the world and is two, three, or more times the rate of the European countries that have more favor- able mine-accident rates than those of the United States (table 1). Moreover, it is significant that the mine-accident-severity rate of British mines is about six times the average accident-severity rate of the major industries of the British Isles, or but little more favorable than the comparable figures in the United States; namely, that mining has an accident severity rate about seven times the average of about 30 of the major industries of this country.
