VARYING in thickness and in number from place to place, coal seams in the Canadian Rockies also range in pitch from nearly horizontal to vertical, sometimes with overturns. Over the entire coal-bearing area there are considerable differences of rank in coals of the same geological age, and there are marked differences in ash content and washability characteristics. Correlation of seams at mining operations within a few miles of each other has often proved impossible. These factors influence mining methods, and, of course, production results. The oldest coal formations of western Canada are of Lower Cretaceous age, as the carboniferous sediments are marine and contain no coal. Coal is also present in formations of Upper Cretaceous and Tertiary ages. The rank of coal varies from semianthracite in some operations in the Kootenay and Luscar formations of the Lower Cretaceous in the Rockies to lignite in the Tertiary fields of the Saskatchewan prairies. Fig. 1 shows the general extent of the formations.

The southern Powder River Basin (PRB) of Wyoming has developed into the largest coal producing region in the United States in the relatively short time span of 22 years. Since the opening of the first non-captive mine in the Basin in October 1972, truck/shovel fleets have played a major part in this rapid growth. In 1994, more than 200 trucks and 50 shovels will be used at 14 mines to help produce more than 190 Mt (210 million st) of coal in the southern PRB. This article presents an overview of the truck/ shovel operations in the Basin. Fleet sizes are reviewed, applications discussed, operating considerations explored, factors looked at that drive high capacity and restrictions listed for future growth. Fleet size Various sizes of trucks and shovels can be found in the southern PRB. However, a clear trend of increasingly larger size units is being established as producers attempt to remain competitive and productive.

THIS CHAPTER of the Minerals Yearbook relates to employment data and injury experience in the metal, nonmetal, and quarrying industries. Combined statistical data on the mineral industries as a whole can be found in volume Ill. Each industry in the chapter is shown separately, and no attempt has been made to combine and show an overall picture. The voluntary reporting of data on injuries and employment by operators of metal and nonmetal mines and quarries has contributed substantially to the promotion of safety in these industries. Data on injury and employment in the clay mining and milling industry are included for the first time. Table 6 contains data for clay mines only for 1955 and for clay mines and mills for 1956. The clay-mill figures are included with other nonmetallic mills in table 5. The information for norunetallic mills was compiled and published for the first time in the 1955 issue of this report.

"The fluorspar deposits in the Gallinas Mining District, Lincoln County, New Mexico, were examined early in February and again in April 1943 by the Bureau of Mines because of the possible importance of newly discovered deposits and of old mine workings showing fluorite-bearing material. There &re many of these deposits spread over a considerable area, and it appeared that exploration might indicate sufficient reserves to support a local mill that could contribute to the supply of fluorspar needed for war purposes. Accordingly, the Bureau initiated an exploratory program in June 1943, which was completed in August 1944.H. E. Rothrock, Roy Earhart, R. G. Smalley, and V. C. Kelly, geologists of the Federal Geological Survey, began mapping and studying the district in May 1943 and continued this work throughout the Bureau's exploration.David J. Stauffer, district ranger, U. S. Forest Service, and several claim owners assisted in the examinations and subsequent exploration.The fluorspar deposits in the Gallinas Mountains are reached by an unpaved forest road, which, leaves U. S. Highway 54 half a mile south of Gallinas station. The road runs due west for 3 miles, then turns due north just beyond the first cattleguard. This north branch is followed for 2 miles to a second cattleguard. There a left branch extends northwest up Red Cloud Canyon to the Red Cloud, and. All. American deposits; the right branch continues north for 2.miles past the Wade Porter ranch, to another left branch, which goes almost 2 miles west to the Hoosier Group deposits. The remaining deposits are reached by trail from either the Hoosier Group or, more easily, from the Red Cloud claim (fig. 1).The Hoosier Group is in sec. l9,, T.. 1S.,1 R. 12 E.; all of the other known ore occurrences are in secs. 13, 14, and 23 to 27, inclusive, T. IS., R. 11 E. All of the deposits are in the Lincoln National Forest and within the limits of a State game refuge. The nearest railroad loading point is Gallinas, Station on the Southern Pacific Railroad. Corona, the next station north of Gallinas, is a Mile or two farther from the deposits.Minor supplied, telegraph, telephone, freight, and express service, and limited living accommodations, Are, obtainable at Corona, 10 to 15 miles from the deposits of Carrizozo, N. During the last decade it has been established that conventional mineral-processing control strategies based on classical control theory result in significant increases in plant throughput and operating-cost savings. It has, however, also been recognized that conventional strategies have important limitations for complex multivariable mineral-processing systems. These limitations center around the fact that single-input/single- output control linkings often result in highly undesirable interactions between controllers. During the last few years new and promising approaches to solving this problem have emerged. These approaches are based on the use of on-line dynamic models to make predictions which are useful for control decision-making. This paper presents a brief summary of the state-of-the-art for mineral-processing control in 1984. This summary is followed by a review of recent developments in model-based control strategies including those in optimal control, self- tuning regulators and decoupling control. Expected trends for the future in the control of mineral-processing operations are discussed.

"BHP Billiton (BHPB) West Australian Iron Ore (WAIO) conducts an extensive geometallurgy (geomet) program for its iron ore deposits in the Pilbara. The geomet program provides accurate information to infrastructure engineers, resource geologists, mine planning engineers and the technical marketing team on the performance characteristics of iron ores. Performance metrics include production planning, such as lump/fine splits, processing capability such as the level of ultra-fine iron ore and ironmaking blast furnace properties including tumble index (TI) and reduction disintegration index (RDI). Prior to the introduction of the current geomet program in WAIO, basic geometallurgical information was provided at the deposit level, such as deposit lump percentage and head grade chemistry. As the business value of geometallurgy was realised during the growth period of WAIO, the geomet process was reviewed and formalised into five steps: geomet drill planning laboratory measurement data management algorithm development block estimation.The geomet laboratory process produces simulated iron ore products from drill core, which are then subjected to physical geometallurgy test work. With the large amount of geometallurgy data collected, extensive databases are utilised to collate and organise the data to improve its usability within the business. Algorithms are created from the data to predict important geomet variables and a block estimation method is used to estimate geometallurgical properties into resource models. The predicted geometallurgy data is regularly reviewed at the different steps against plant and shipping data to allow refinement of the geometallurgy algorithms. It is also recognised that geomet data can be used to optimise the operations in existing processing hubs for improved production rate. In addition, future geomet programs will focus on generating data from all available drill core programs, not just dedicated geomet drill holes, and will incorporate new types of data, such as hyper-spectral information, for improved geometallurgical estimation.CITATION:Wright, B, Carroll, T, Flanagan, M, Sua, T and Van Dijken, B, 2013. Unique onsite assembly of a 12.43 m Main Beam TBM and back-up system was completed on September 18, 2008 in the remote mountains of the Sichuan province of China. The equipment was assembled onsite, without previously having been assembled and tested in a factory, utilizing a method called Onsite First Time Assembly (OFTA). The Jinping-II hydroelectric project features four parallel headrace tunnels approximately 18 km long, two of which will be excavated by TBMs and two by drill and blast. A nearby fifth tunnel is being excavated by a 7.2 m TBM to draw down ground water in advance of excavating the headrace tunnels. "The St. Lawrence deposit is a large wollastonite skarn (ca. 9 Mt @ 41.3% wollastonite) adjoining the gabbroic-to-syenitic Leo Lake pluton in the granulite facies Frontenac Terrane of the Grenvillian Central Metasedimentary Belt. It occurs within a horseshoeshaped horizon of quartzite, open to the east. The skarn extends over 1.2 km2, and comprises wollastonite-dominant, wollastonite-clinopyroxene, and diverse quartz-feldspar-sulphide (-titanite) layers, interbanded with, and strongly folded within, the quartzite. As in the world-class wollastonite deposits of the Willsboro district, New York, no carbonate protolith is preserved, and calcite is a negligible constituent of the mineralized zones. Wollastonite development is nonetheless ascribed to metasomatism of a metacarbonate unit by magmatogene, silica-rich, CO2-poor (XCO2 < 0.05) fluids, at P = 350 MPa and ca. 560°C, or, alternatively, 550 MPa and ca. 630°C.Several high-grade zones, averaging >40% but locally exceeding 80%, of translucent, white, tabular wollastonite grains, with lengths of 0.2 cm to 5 cm, have been delimited by drilling. Preliminary beneficiation studies yield high aspect-ratio and high-purity (low Fe and Mn) concentrates.St. Lawrence compares favourably to other known prospects and operating wollastonite deposits: having good chemical and physical properties, low iron content, and high aspect ratios (>20:1). In addition, the deposit has a favourable size and location, and will benefit from a low Canadian dollar. Canada currently has no wollastonite production."

An assessment of methods currently available for the accurate determination of low concentrations of platinum in ores and mineral concentrates indicated that prior treatment of the sample by fire assay procedures is necessary. To enable rapid determinations to be carried out, instrumental methods applied to the metallic bead produced from the fire assay treatment have been evaluated, considering maximum flexibility for concentration variations, minimum chemical operations, and adequate sensitivity.Atomic absorption spectrometry proved suitable, giving solution determination limits of 0&#183;4 p.p.m. Pt, 0&#183;1 p.p.m. Pt, or 0&#183;06 p.p.m. Pt under various extraction conditions using aqueous and organic agents. Thesedetermination limits related to 1 assay ton of sample (32&#183;67 g) produced easily readable and accurate readings within the range of platinum contents (0&#183;03-2&#183;0 p.p.m.) of economic interest in deposit evaluation and prospecting. The technique shows promise of also being suitable for determination of palladium and gold.

Construction vibrations may be harmful to adjacent and remote structures, sensitive instruments and people. Construction vibration sources have a wide range of energy, displacement, velocity and acceleration transmitted on the ground. Effects of different dynamic sources and soil conditions on construction vibrations is analyzed. Consequences of construction vibrations are developed in various ways. It is important to assess intolerable vibrations before the beginning of construction activities. Guidelines for preconstruction survey are presented. Pre-construction survey and prediction of anticipated vibrations by IRFP method, monitoring and control of measured vibrations are important steps in preventing intolerable vibration effect.

ABSTRACT Since 1964, the Iron Ore Company of Canada has deposited iron ore tailings into Wabush Lake in western Labrador, Canada. From 1999 to 2008, the authors completed multibeam bathymetric and sampling surveys and an airborne LiDAR survey. These data were integrated to study the evolution of the tailings delta shoreline and lakebed elevation. Subaqueous channels evolved between surveys, influencing the tailings depositional pattern. With this analysis it is possible to evaluate the effect of disposal strategies on the delta topset and tailings accumulation. This project uniquely couples marine and terrestrial techniques to follow the fate of tailings in a dispersal system.

MASSACHUSETTS INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY, In refining copper, the metal is melted down in a reverbera tory furnace in a more or less oxidizing atmosphere and then further subjected to an oxidizing smelting in order to eliminate the common impurities, most of which have a stronger affinity for oxygen than has copper. In these operations some of the copper is oxidized to cuprous oxide and dissolved by the metal bath. When the quantity of dissolved cuprous oxide has reached about 6 per cent, the metal is said to have been brought to " set-copper." A button-sample will show a depressed surface and, when broken, a single bubble at the apex of the depression; the fracture will be brick-red and dull. It is essential to carry the oxidation to this point in order to know that the impurities have been oxidized as far as it is possible under the given working-conditions. Nearly all the cuprous oxide of the set-copper is now reduced to the metallic state by poling, when "tough-pitch" copper will be obtained. A button-sample will show a flat surface. Upon breaking, it will be found that the former bubble has disappeared and that the fracture has become rose-colored and shows a silky luster. The quantity of cuprous oxide allowed to remain in the copper will vary with the impurities still present in the metal and with the degree of pitch that it is desired to reach. It is essential for the general physical and the mechanical properties of the resulting copper that such impurities as arsenic, antimony, bismuth, lead shall be present in the oxidized state, as they are

Collectorless flotation of sulphide minerals from Lyon Lake ore (Mattabi Mines Ltd.) has been studied both in the laboratory and plant. Among the four major minerals chalcopyrite showed the greatest response to collectorless flotation, followed by galena. Flotation of sphalerite and pyrite was minimal. Collectorless flotation was influenced by pulp potential and pH. Experiments using different gas compositions showed collectorless flotation was promoted when the pulp potentials were greater than about 0 mV (SCE). The study of the effect of depressants showed that SO2 at pH < 8.0 depresses both galena and chalcopyrite but at pH 9.5 flotation of chalcopyrite recovers. Use of NaCN preferentially depressed chalcopyrite compared to galena. Preliminary results from plant tests at Mattabi Mines Ltd. confirm that collectorless flotation occurs and that it is preferential for chalcopyrite and to a lesser extent galena. Practical implications of collectorless flotation in plant practice are discussed. A critical factor will be silver recovery.

Pyrophyllite, a hydrous aluminum silicate (Al2 Si4O10 (OH)2 ) has been mined in North Carolina and marketed without beneficiation for the past 100 years, but recent demands for higher-grade material indicate that an economical concentration method is needed for at least a part of the pyrophyllite production. Past production has depended upon selective mining and hand sorting, which is often unsatisfactory because of the finely disseminated character of the ores. The major impurity in North Carolina pyrophyllite ores is quartz, which accounts for the abrasiveness of the commercial product. Since pyrophyllite is only slightly heavier than quartz, those ores cannot be beneficiated by simple gravity-concentration methods. Some separation can be attained by differential grinding and air classification because of the difference in hardness of the two minerals) but the separation is not sharp. Froth flotation of pyrophyllite from Quartz has never been attempted commercially, but if the demand for high-grade material is sufficient, it would seem that this process offers the most premise of being economically feasible.

Estimation of operating costs in the nickel production industry requires a detailed analysis of material flows from mine to smelter to refinery. Despite the small number of nickel producers compared to other base metals, the existence of two very different ore types (sulphide and laterite) and a wide variety of mining and processing technologies make the identification of these flows of critical importance if an accurate global picture is to be obtained. Smelting and refining processes in nickel metallurgy have evolved with a high degree of adaptation to specific operating conditions in different locations. Overall costs are calculated by combining individual cost elements for each unit in production chains from mine to saleable metal product. The average cost of western world primary nickel production in 1995 was US$2.07/lb ($4560/tonne). Average operating costs remained virtually unchanged in the three years to 1995 after an 8.5 per cent fall in 1993, but a 3.9 per cent increase to $2.15/lb is expected for 1996. A major factor in this rise results from the lower prices of copper and cobalt this year, reducing the by-product credits available to major producers.

The never-ending quest for gold-bearing ore deposits is a primary industry in Canada, employing people of widely differing expertise. The exploration models for gold deposits are generally geologically complex and the targets have relatively small cross-sectional areas. These problems are compounded in Canada by the minimal outcrop exposure in most mineral provinces and the high percentage of water-covered areas. Naturally the chances of successfully delineating an economic gold deposit are very much greater if all parties involved can act as a team of explorationists constantly confemng amongst themselves particularly as the applicable disciplines generally overlap and complement each other. Three case histories (see Figure 1) are presented to illustrate this philosophy with emphasis placed on the role of the geophysicist in translating the exploration model as defined by the geologist into physically measurable parameters and identifying target areas with similar characteristics. The Conwest-Miminiska property in Ontario is a grassroots exploration play. Additional ore reserves needed to be delineated on the Salmita property in the Northwest Territories. At Laura Lake, near Chapais, Quebec geophysical methods were employed to trace thin high-grade mineral intersections under deep overburden and severe cultural interference.

In recent years, market rates of interest have risen well above their historical long-term average. Also during this period, the short-term variability of interest rates has been greater than in prior years. Interest rates have a significant effect on the operation of our economy. They influence the extractive industries in a number of ways. Their major long-range impact is on in- vestment decisions-specifically the valuation of mineral deposits. An understanding of the factors that influence interest rates is important to the engineer or businessman who makes the investment decisions for the mining company. The effect of changes in the market rate of interest on the value of mineral reserves is critical to the future financial success of the mining enterprise.

"A novel selenium removal process called Recycled Green rust/Ferrite Process is developed by MMC. In this process, a mixed Fe2+-Fe3+ hydroxide compound, green rust (GR), reduces selenate to elemental selenium, while GR is consequently oxidized to magnetite Fe3O4. Sequencing batch-mode experiment showed that the residual selenium concentration gradually decreased with the number of batch test increased. Stable selenium removal was achieved when the number of batch test exceed 15 times. Optimum selenium removal ratio reached 99.95% where initial Se concentration 2.1mg/L decreased to 0.001mg/L. Furthermore, the continuous feeding test carried out through a pilot-scale plant with a feeding capacity 600 L/hr. Approximately 860-hour-feeding test was carried out for the selenium-contaminated groundwater which had an averaged selenium concentration of 0.88 mg/L. Selenium concentration in the effluent from thickener maintained less than 0.01 mg/L (selenium removal rate of 99%) until a net operating time reached 800 hours.IntroductionJapan is one of the largest producers of selenium, and thus there are potential environmental impacts of selenium on soil and aquatic environments. The Mitsubishi Material Corporation (MMC) owns some real estate properties whose soil and groundwater was polluted by selenium and other heavy metals. These sites include former industrial plants: a smelter for nonferrous metal and a fabricating semiconductors and pigments. Selenium in aquatic environment commonly exists in four oxidation states, namely, VI, IV, 0 and -II. Selenate ion (SeO4 2-), the most oxidized form of selenium, and selenite ion (SeO3 2-) are highly soluble and mobile. Elemental selenium (Se0) is insoluble in water and therefore has much lower toxicity. Because selenium is carcinogenic and teratogenic at high concentration, the national effluent standard in Japan is fixed at 0.1 mg/L and the environmental standard at 0.01 mg/L. Although there are several selenium removal techniques, the most conventional process is coprecipitation with a ferric hydroxide because of its simplicity and low cost. It is known that selenite is adsorbed strongly on the surface of ferric hydroxide, but selenate is not. The low affinity of selenate on oxide mineral surfaces was demonstrated by the fact that selenate could be easily displaced by adding competing anions, particularly sulfate ion. Selenate removal from polluted water is one of the most difficult techniques, and more effective methods are desired. MMC developed a novel selenium removal process [1]. In this process, the concentrated slurry that contains Fe(II)-Fe(III) hydroxyl-salts known as Green Rusts (GRs) contributes to selenate removal. The main components of the iron precipitate in the reactor are GRs and their oxidation product, magnetite (Fe3O4)."

Deposition of uranium in the South Alligator river area has been influenced structurally by reverse faulting; and lithologically by carbonaceous shales and sandstones. Mineral assemblages suggest a mesothermal-epithermal epigenetic mode of origin. The ultimate source of the uranium and associated metals is probably in deep seated magmatism which is expressed at surface in the widespread penecontemporaneous vulcanity.
