"An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. A full-length paper was not prepared for this presentation. Not only do epithermal gold deposits provide many challenges in estimating mineral resources, the complexities of these deposits also provide technical challenges in assessing appropriate mining and processing strategies, as well as social and environmental planning and management. The characteristics of epithermal gold deposits include being highly variable with respect to geometry and gold grade distribution, the presence of other economic contributors, mineralogy, texture, rock strength, weathering and alteration overprint. These characteristics influence the economic value of mining projects in an interlinked manner. Consequently, successful exploitation of epithermal deposits requires a holistic approach, coupled with the effective integration of geological data to meet all aspects of mine development decision-making. This paper presents examples of the key technical challenges encountered in estimating and mining epithermal deposits. It also highlights why these issues need to be addressed from the viewpoint of geology, sampling, resource estimation, mine planning, mineral processing and social and environmental planning for the true value of the mining project to be realised.CITATION:Konopa, S, Chesher, R, Gleeson, E, Allen, P and Boakye, D, 2015. To improve mine roof bolt performance, Jennmar Corporation commenced the design and development of a new roof control sys- tem. This new system designated "Insta'l Compression", not only improves safety, but is more cost efficient due to reduced amounts of resin needed per bolt installation. In this paper the research and development of this new system will be outlined. Much of the information presented will be actual test data from various underground operations in Alabama, Kentucky, and Pennsylvania. The development of this system will also cover the design of a new expansion shell, resin compression ring, anti- friction washer, and upgrading of material specifications.

DATA concerning the actual net energy required for pulverizing coal are lacking from the literature on coal pulverization. Power data given in the literature concern gross power and frequently include the power expended on the air blast or product-conveyor system, as well as power lost through friction in the pulverizer itself. Consequently, such data supply no information regarding the net energy consumed in pulverizing or the relative grinding resistance of various coals. In the study of coal pulverizing much work has been done on what is known as "grindability-index numbers," but grindability tests have seldom considered the energy input (that is, the "cause" part of the system "cause and effect"). There are many records of the effect, but even these have questionable value because the "grindability" tests did not make a pulverized product by a method comparable with commercial pulverizers. In many of the tests, only a selected part of the coal was ground, and the remainder continued to be an unknown factor. Furthermore, none of the grindability tests provide the balanced circulating load common to all modern commercial pulverizing. In order to obtain better understanding of the fundamental principles of coal pulverizing, the Bureau of Mines is investigating the "cause" phase; that is, the net energy input or net power excluding friction between the moving parts of the machine. As a first step in the investigation, it was necessary to design and construct a laboratory machine in which no friction-loss corrections are involved, which could grind and finish a minus-3/4 -inch feed, which could be emptied rapidly and completely, which could operate with a continuous feed and finish in an air separator; and, most essential of all, which would be equipped with a measuring device for recording only that portion of the total power consumed in actual pulverizing, hereafter referred to as "net energy input" or "net horse-powerhours." The channel-roller pulverizer here-inafter described is believed to meet these requirements. HISTORY OF THE MACHINE The work started when Ralph W. Smith, engineer, St. Genevieve Lime Co., St. Genevieve, Mo., was appointed one of the consultants of the Bureau of Mines, United States Department of the Interior, in cooperation with the University of Alabama, to develop a machine for testing the abrasiveness of coal. Smith had already developed a machine for testing the abrasiveness of dentifrices,1 and it was thought the same principles might be applied to coal. In several sections of the country new demands are being brought bar cement users. Among these the demand' for truck shipments; and palletized loads present new problems that do not lend themselves to sample solution. In fact these demands have far-reaching effect in the way bagged cement might be marketed. Early solutions of palletized truck loads filled from existing packing and loading facilities have resulted in' slowdown in packing, additional labor and space for palletizing, considerable experimentation in type and construction of pallets, and usually far from optimum truck handling and loading methods.

As the cyanide-method for the extraction of gold from ores is extensively used in the United States and elsewhere, and appears destined to prove a factor of increasing importance in the metallurgy of gold, a description of the latest laboratorymethods may prove of interest. The history of the development of the process in the United States has been analogous to that of all new processes. Many failures are to be recorded and a few successes. It is the opinion of the writer that, had the following simple tests been better understood, many of the failures would not have occurred, and we should probably have a larger number of successful plants in operation. While the process is not simple, but requires a high degree of chemical and engineering skill, the determination of the adaptability of an ore to the method is generally not difficult. While the laboratory-results will not always coincide with the actual results obtained in the mill, they will serve as a guide and control on the working of the mill, and mill generally suffice to determine if the ore can be

The results of an exploratory investigation by means of resistivity measurements at -195ºC, on the aging characteristics of a set of Al-Mg alloys with a maximum content of 7 pct Mg, are reported. Whereas for dilute alloys (Mg < 1.5 pct) only a decrease in resistivity is observed at about 100°C (due to the elimination of quenched-in vacancies), for more concentrated alloys such a decrease is preceded by an increase in resistivity in the range between -60ºand +40°C. Following some previous suggestions, this increase is considered as good evidence for clustering of solute atoms @reprecipi-tation process). From the analysis of the results it appears that, although the process is substantially similar to that observed in other Al-rich alloys, it is characterized by a strong interaction between vacancies and zones. THE process of formation of Guinier-Preston zones, i.e., preprecipitation,1&apos;2 which occurs during the aging at about room temperature in many supersaturated aluminum-rich alloys, has been extensively investigated in the past few years by several workers.2,3 owever, a very interesting question arises when the case of Al-Mg alloys is considered: although it is very easy to supersaturate Al-Mg alloys, just in the same way as for many other aluminum alloys showing preprecipitation, only very little experimental evidence was available until a short time ago in the literature supporting the existence of "natural" aging in supersaturated Al-Mg alloys (see, for example, Refs. 4 to 6). On the other hand, as is well known, the X-ray method is not useful in this case because the X-ray scattering factors of magnesium and aluminum atoms are about the same. Recently, however, Cordier and Detert7 have stressed that during the aging at about room temperature of a supersaturated Al-Mg 10 pct alloy it is possible to detect an increase in resistivity; since, as is well known, such an increase is observed also in most alloys showing preprecipitation, the above authors have interpreted their results as evidence for the formation of magnesium-rich clusters (or Guinier-Preston zones) during the aging. In the course of or ientative investigations on preprecipitation in several aluminum-rich alloys, we also could detect a similar phenomenon in more dilute Al-Mg alloys, see Instituto Sperimentale Metalli Leggeri, Annual Report, 1959, and also Ref. 8. Since the details of our observations, although of a preliminary nature, differ from those of Cordier and Detert and allow one to draw a more advanced picture of the preprecipitation process in Al-Mg alloys, we have thought it useful to report our results in this paper and to comment on them briefly.

Se trata de un yacimiento epitermal de baja sulfuración, emplazado en autobrechas y tobas donde mediente los análisis químicos de los muestreos realizados se determinó valores de leyes en Au 0,10g/TM a 0,81g/TM, estimandose recursos inferidos de 70MT @0,10-0,80 g/t de Au, lo cual convierten en un prospecto de gran potencial.

ABSTRACT: An evaluation of the importance of the thermo-hydro-mechanical couplings (THM) on the performance assessment of a deep underground storage design has been made as part of the international DECOVALEX III project. It is a numerical study that simulates a generic repository configuration in the near field in a granite medium. The thermo-hydro-mechanical evolution of the whole configuration is simulated over a period of 100 years. The model used to represent the unsaturated behaviour of the various porous media makes allowance for moisture transfers through the effect of thermal and water gradients. The paper presents a comparison of the temperature, water pressure and stress fields obtained by TM, TH, HM and THM coupled calculations. The results demonstrate that temperature is hardly affected by the couplings. In contrast the influence of the couplings on the mechanical stresses is considerable. This is attributed to the key role that water has on bentonite swelling or shrinkage effects that are dependent on its saturation level variations. ZUSAMMENFASSUNG : Im Rahmen des internationalen Projekts DECOVALEX III wurde untersucht, wie groß der Einfluss thermisch-hydraulisch-mechanischer Kopplungen (THM) auf die Leistungsfähigkeit eines Konzeptes zur Lagerung hoch radioaktiver Abfälle zu bewerten ist. Bei dieser numerischen Behandlung wird eine generelle Lagerungskonfiguration in granitartigem Milieu simuliert. Die thermisch-hydraulisch-mechanischen Prozesse werden für eine Dauer von 100 Jahren simuliert. Bei dem Modell, mit dem das Verhalten der verschiedenen, unterschiedlich porösen Milieus in ungesättigtem Zustand dargestellt werden soll, werden die Feuchtigkeitstransporte infolge thermischer und hydraulischer Vorgänge berücksichtigt. Verglichen werden in diesem Artikel verschiedene Temperatur-, Wasserdruck- und Beanspruchungsfelder, die sich aus TM-, TH-, HM- und THM gekoppelten Berechnungen ergaben. Dabei stellte sich heraus, dass die Temperatur nur gering von den Kopplungen berührt wird. Die Einflüsse der Kopplungen auf die Mechanik sind hingegen bedeutend; ausschlaggebend dafür ist der Faktor Wasser, der den Bentonit je nach Sättigungsgrad quellen oder trocknen lässt. Le modèle utilisé pour représenter le comportement non saturé des différents milieux poreux prend en compte les transferts d’humidité sous l’effet de gradients thermiques et hydriques. L&apos;article présente une comparaison des champs de température, de pression d’eau et de contraintes obtenues par des calculs couplés TM, TH, HM et THM. Les résultats montrent que la température est peu affectée par les couplages. Extraction of manganese, gold, and silver from a low-grade manganiferous-silver ore was investigated by thiourea leaching followed by standard cyanidation. The levels of reagent concentrations in this investigation were 0.0 -1.0 M thiourea and 0.0 -1.0 M sulfuric acid. Temperature and agitation speed were maintained at Z5 °c and 300 rpm, respectively. The dissolution of gold, and silver was shown to be dependent mainly on sulfuric acid and thiourea concentrations. In general, 50.0 % Ag, 98.0 % Au, and 75 % Mn were recovered from a Mn-Ag ore by thiourea leaching. Overall silver extraction of 98.0 % was obtained by cyanidation after thiourea leaching. Thiourea leaching of sodium bisulfite leach residues was also studied, and the total extraction of gold and silver were 97 % and 40 %, respectively. Finally, a two-stage thiourea leach was also investigated.

This report is the outcome of work prosecuted by the writer, assisted by Mr. J. D. Robertson, during the past five years. It is shown that sodium can be removed very readily from molten aluminium by the use of a beta"-alumina, the more highly conducting form of beta-alumina, provided that the surface of the tube is wetted by a layer of salt. From current/time plots the theoretical amount of sodium removed has been calculated and excellent agreement obtained. The beta"-alumina tubes can be immersed directly in the Al without fracturing if they are pre-heated for a few minutes prior to immersion. According to its stability beta"-alumina should be attacked by molten Al at low Na contents, but in these experiments the salt acted as a protective layer. Magnesium chloride is a relatively cheap salt, whose Mg product can be used within a foundry. The only other product is NaCl, which can be used in-house as a flux or sent for disposal. No polluting gases are used or produced and no drosses created. The time for removal of sodium was quite short, comparable to that for chlorination

The constantly increasing consumption of Portland cement in the State makes the above subject of particular interest at this time. The increasing demand is due to the rapid settling of the country and the fact that new uses are being found frequently for the above named commercial article. The industry is one that is bound to grow as the population increases, and this being the case it may be well at this time to consider briefly the matter of the chemical and physical composition of proper raw materials. A cement mixture is one that contains approximately 75 per cent, carbonate of lime, 15 per cent. silica, and 5 to 7 per cent. alumina and iron oxides; the other elements being magnesium carbonate and mall quantities of the rarer elements generally associated with limestone deposits. It can be readily seen from the above composition that it is possible to build up this mixture from a number of different materials. First.—A rock high in carbonate of lime can be mixed with clay or shale in such proportions as to bring about the desired composition ; the chief difficulty in the building up of such a mixture is that it is hard to find a clay or shale in which the silica-alumina ratio lies between 4 to 1 and 3 to 1 and at the same time shows physical characteristics which will make certain its adaptability to the practical manufacture of Portland cement. Very often clays or shales are found which are right chemically but contain large quantities of grit or free silica. Such clays or shale must be ground to extreme fineness in the mixture in order to make the silica and alumina combine with the lime when the mixture is burned. On the other hand, clays or hales are often found that have the proper physical characteristics but in which the amount of alumina is too great. Second.—A mixture can be built up of different limestones some of which run above the 75 per cent. requirement and others below;

Certain types of mineralogical alteration due either to weathering or serpentinization, and the effects these transformations have on the flotation of nickel sulfide ores are discussed. These effects are generally deleterious due to: (a) the poor flotation properties of the alteration minerals (as in the case of tochilinite), (b) the nature of the alteration texture (as in the case of violarite), or (c) .close association of the alteration products with other undesirable minerals (such as nickeliferous smythite). Several examples from INCO Metals Company&apos;s mines and mineral prospects are given as illustration.

An investigation into the stability of large open stopes at Premier diamond mine, Culinan, South Africa, is described. The open stopes are located in a weak kimberlite orebody, directly underneath a 75 m-thick sill of gabbro. Two and three-dimensional stress analyses were carried out in a back-analysis of the stresses and failure around the first open stope created under the sill. The results were used in the prediction of the future stability of the planned open stopes, intervening pillars, and sill.

"The planning and construction of prime coking coal beneficiation plants in the nationalized mines in India are reviewed. Flow schemes, construction practice, materials consumption, and costs are detailed.Medium-capacity beneficiation plants with multiple loops are recommended under Indian conditions.IntroductionThe reserve of high-grade and easily washed metallurgical coal in India are quite limited. Prime coking coal constitutes approximately 22% of the total resources and occurs exclusively in the Jharia coalfield in the state of Bihar. Bharat Coking Coal Limited (a subsidiary of Coal India Limited (CIL) the nationalized mining sector of India) owns 80% of the Jharia collieries. The development of Jharia coalfield in the pre-nationalized period before 1971 has been characterized by a large number of small mines with primitive mining methods and low productivity. The production of prime coking coal to meet the demand of the steel industry in India has to increase from the existing level of 11.1 million tonnes to 43.4 million tonnes per annum by 2000 AD, thereby producing 5.61 million tonnes and 22.7 million tonnes of clean coal respectively. An ambitious program has been undertaken for development of bigger mines with an average production of 1 to 3 million tonnes per annum. With the fast dwindling reserves of good quality coking coal, more inferior grade coal seams, having difficult washing characteristics, are now being mined. All the coal from the future mines will have to be beneficiated to make it suitable for consumption of steel plants; the following washeries are being planned for construction by 2000 AD:"

The proposed National Underground Science Laboratory will be housed in the former Homestake Gold Mine at Lead, South Dakota. Uses will include underground neutrino experiments that must be shielded by several thousand feet of rock, as well as ground-water research in fracture-flow environments, and investigation of the microbiology of extreme environments. The Homestake Mine has about 300 miles of underground workings. Seepage of ground water into the mine openings is approximately 500 gallons per minute. Average annual precipitation in the northern Black Hills is approximately 28 inches per year. The majority of this becomes surface-water runoff or evapotranspiration, with little ground-water recharge because of the low permeability of the Precambrian rocks in the area. Dewatering of the workings over the 125 years of operation of the mine has influenced the subsurface hydrology of the 8,000-footdeep mine.

The authors consider the features and advantages of a new promising trend in mineral processing - column flotation. Design aerohydrodynamic and process characteristics of pilot-scale columns are studied. Optimum process parameters for various ores and operations are studied. Flow patterns in cells of various cross-sections are investigated and the relationship between Peclet criterion and specific capacity of cell is determined. On this basis options were developed for optimisation of hydrodynamic characteristics of large capacity cells, including longitudinal sectionalising of the collection zone. It is shown that advantages of high column cells (10 - 13 m) produced in the West can be implemented in a sectionalised machine of smaller height (5 - 6 m). Investigations on the influence of slurry and air bubbles flow patterns indicated that to increase flotation rate of particles of various flotabilities it is expedient to combine co- and counter-current flows of phases in a single column. The proposed designs allow tailings to repeatedly return tailings to the collection zone and alternate co- and counter-current slurry and air flows. For the first time columns with alternating slurry flows (combination of co- and counter-current flows) are developed and commercialised. Unique multi-sectional cells having a number of essential advantages compared to monocells are developed. Design features of the cell allow: implementation of different flotation process flowsheets in a single unit, improved beneficiation process results, reduced specific power requirement, and elimination of sludging of the aerator and cell bottom part. Operational problems restricting introduction of column cells are connected with the aeration unit. The new cells are supplied with pneumohydraulic and stepped airlift spargers, allowing control of bubble size distribution with a service life of not less than three years. Successful operation of the new generation of columns with cell volumes of 15, 25, 40, and 80 cu m and the height of 5 - 6 m in copper, molybdenum, antimony, tungsten and nickel ores and coal slurry processing at different plants in this country illustrated their considerable process and operational advantages and verified the proposed options and relationships. A simulation technique of the flotation process and models for the solution of various problems are developed. A modular model of column flotation is constructed taking into account the kinetic relationship of the process and the hydrodynamic regime in the cell. Based on this, a technique of calculating the column parameters based on laboratory tests is developed (scaling-up), and applied for calculating the design of commercial-scale columns is developed.

The Hoyle Pond underground mine is located in the Porcupine Gold Camp, 18 km east of downtown Timmins. Since the initiation of production in 1985, the operation has produced in excess of 1.9 million ounces of gold at a grade of 15 grams per tonne. Currently, Hoyle Pond ranks 8th in total ounce production for all past and present producing mines in the camp, with the highest head grade of any of the significant past, or present producing mines in Timmins. Cut and fill, shrinkage, longhole and panel mining methods are employed to excavate the narrow gold bearing structures. Using illustrative examples, this paper provides an overview of factors, such as geologic setting, rock mechanics challenges and mine infrastructure, which influence mine design at Hoyle Pond.

DELEGATES from 26 Local Sections and- Divisions of the Institute had three stimulating sessions during the Annual Meeting, a few topics still remaining to be discussed after the two Monday sessions.. The final session was held on Thursday morning. An abstract of the discussion will be transmitted to each delegate present. The topics included: Student relations. Section operation, membership, employment, MINING AND METALLURGY, a new nonmetallic minerals Division. licensing of engineers, and increased allotments of money to Local Sections. Some of the Sections felt that the present limit of $250 allotted to them - from the national treasury was insufficient to carry on their activities, and that this maximum should he increased. A resolution to this effect was passed for transmission to the Board of Directors.

Chromite, the only ore of chromium, occurs almost exclusively in mafic-ultramafic rocks and their weathering products. However, not all kinds of mafic-ultramafic rocks are favorable hosts for possible low-grade chromite deposits. For instance, chromium-bearing basalts are not favorable because they commonly contain < 0.3% Cr2O3, and chromite is almost always less than 50 um in diameter, if it is present at all. Chromite-bearing ultramafic rocks in stratifonn and alpine complexes tend to be either ore grade (> 25% Cr203) or very low grade (< 2% Cr203); intermediate rocks are scarce. In most complexes large tonnages exist only in the < 2% Cr2O3 group and the composition of the chromite is commonly unsuitable for metallurgical use. Some nickel laterite districts contain more than 108 tons of material with 2.0% to 5.5% Cr2O3, and hence, chromium could be a byproduct of nickel in some laterite districts.
