The coal measures of the South Wales coalfield contain at least 50 horizons at which coal seams are known, to occur. More than 300 samples of coal were collected from these coal measures and this paper outlines thefindings of an investigation of the pattern and distribution of 12 trace elements in South Wales coals. A comparison of trace element contents of the South Wales coals is made with trace element values found elsewhereand an attempt was made to establish the organic affinity of the elements in different seams and in the coalfield 'as a whole. An important function of such an analysis is to determine the order of abundance of trace elements and this was performed for individual seams and for the whole coalfield.The interrelationship of certain elements in some seams is also examined with a view to understanding the effectiveness of such an approach to seam correlation.Ranges of values are quoted together with the mean values of the various elements. Variations of elemental values within a seam section and over the coalfield as a whole are discussed.

This paper describes the characteristics of electric arc furnace slag (EAF slag) as an aggregate of concrete along with the chemical composition, leaching concentration of heavy metals, the soundness of EAF slag and compressive strength of mortar with 20% and 50% replacements of sand. The results showed that leaching of heavy metals and soundness of EAF slag satisfied Korean environmental limit and Korean Industrial Standard for aggregates. The compressive strength of mortar increased as the replacement ratio of EAF slag for sand increased.

"Seven lithologic units, informally characterized, were recognized in the vicinity of the Montauban orebody. The first five lie in stratigraphic order. From structural bottom to structural top these are: (1) grey composite gneiss; (2) dark grey quartz-biotite gneiss; (3) quartz-biotite-garnet gneiss hosting several calcareous, aluminous and magnesian members and gold mineralization; (4) light grey quartz-muscovite-(sericite)-biotite gneiss; and (5) metabasafts. The last two intrude the sequence: (6) amphibolite dykes and (7) pegmatite veins. The orebody lies on the inverted limb of an overturned synform verging to the west with the metabasafts marking the core of the fold. As the foliation is folded, this fold is attributed to deformation ""D2""; deformation ""DI"" being responsible for the formation of the foliation. A late brittle deformation developed shear zones with probable strike-slip motions. The refined stratigraphy and the identification of the structural position of the orebody provide new tools for regional interpretation and prospecting.RESUMESept unités lithologiques ont été définies informeffement à proximité du gisement de Montauban. THE rolling process may be considered as a case of a nonhomogeneous plastic flow. In such a heterogeneous deformation there is no direct general solution, and the plastic deformation varies from point to point as a function of the coordinates. It is practicable to determine these plastic strains only at the conclusion of the rolling process, and the local strains can be studied by observing the deformations produced in a suitably placed grid system. Strains at the surface of a bar after rolling have been reported by MacGregor and Coffin,' but the strain distributions within the bar have not been previously observed. Siebel² has investigated the plastic deformations resulting from wire-drawing by splitting the wire along its axis, milling a grid coordinate system on the inner plane surfaces, and binding the .wire together so that it would pull through a die as a single unit. This method was possible because of the rotational symmetry of the die. In the rolling process, however, such a system was not readily applicable. This paper describes another method of including a grid system, and reports some preliminary data on the plastic rolling strains within a square bar. Experimental Procedure 2.1 mm wide (144 network squares per sq in.) was punched from a thin lead sheet with a steel die and supported in a brass mold by thin copper wires. Pure tin was then poured around the grid to form a solid bar, with the network securely imbedded at. a given position. This bar was then machined to a square 15.2 mm (0.60 in.) wide, and then radiographed. The lead grid was quite adherent and sufficiently ductile to follow the deformation of the bar faithfully. The network lines also remained sharp enough to maintain a high radiographic contrast, and the tin bar, with the grid included, could withstand considerable deformation at room temperature without splitting at the interface. In order to fill the mold, it was necessary to cast the tin at 260-280°C and during pouring the lead grid was supported at short intervals to prevent warping. Some shrinkage cavities were encountered, but only bars which were free of shrinkage in the network region were used. This method is similar to the one employed by Steinberg" in an investigation of the strain distribution in a tensile specimen. Before rolling, the machined bars were radiographed in two directions to obtain accurate initial dimensions of each square and to observe whether the grid was straight and correctly positioned. The rolling was performed in a small hand mill with 2 in. diam rolls at room temperature, and a 20 pct reduction based on the original height was employed. The rolls were clean and no lubricant was used. Halfway through the bar, at the center of the network, the rolls were reversed and the bar extracted. These bars were then radiographed again

Optimization of the rock cutting performance plays a major role in the tunneling operation. For a given set of tool and cutting environment, rock fragments may be chipped away in numerous manners and it is crucial to understand and be able to predict the dynamics at the cutter-rock interface. This paper presents rational and realistic 3D finite element modeling of rock cutting where typical computational issues ?such as contact formulation, appropriate rock material response, mesh distortion, and crack propagation? are overcome. Cutting forces and failure mechanisms in this finite element analysis are successfully validated by laboratory single-cutter scratching tests in sandstone.

El distrito Minero de Yanacocha está conformado por 10 depósitos epitermales de oro de alta sulfuración emplazados a lo largo del corredor estructural NE-SW. Quecher Main es uno de estos depósitos que fue descubierto y desarrollado en los últimos años como resultado de un nuevo enfoque en los trabajos de exploración. El descubrimiento y exploración del depósito se realizó entre 1998 - 2002, después de una evaluación económica cuyo resultado fue negativo el depósito fue descartado. En el 2013 el proyecto fue re-evaluado con el objetivo de encontrar zonas mineralizadas de oro en óxidos cerca de superficie; posteriores trabajos de mapeo, geoquímica superficial, y perforación de taladros diamantinos perpendiculares al corredor estructural NE-SW encontraron zonas con alta ley de oro (Au > 1g/t) en profundidad en óxidos.

Longwall mining is one of the most widely practiced underground coal mining method. The behavior of the longwall gob is very critical in the understanding of the complex ground response to longwall mining. In the limited data available, the values of gob moduli used in numerical modeling ranged from 1,000 psi to over 300,000 psi. Such a wide variation in moduli would greatly affect the results of the numerical analysis. A better understanding of the behavior of the gob will allow numerical models to be more accurate for simulating longwall mining conditions. In this study, a gob model based on the Terzaghi's model was incorporated into the comprehensive finite element package, ABAQUS, to simulate the loading behavior of longwali gob material. A case study was used to verify the proposed gob model.

In order to better predict and manage benthic disturbance by deep seabed manganese nodules mining, we needed to conduct a benthic disturbance experiment at the selected area, which has a similar environmental condition as the preservation reference area. Therefore, we have performed environmental baseline studies from 2003--not only to select the benthic environmental impact testing site but, also to detect any environmental changes before and after mining activity. Since then, a large dataset of various parameters ranging from physical (e.g. temperature, salinity, current, weather), chemical (e.g. dissolved oxygen, nutrients, dissolved and particulate organic carbon), biological (e.g. bacteria, plankton, benthos), geological (e.g. Mn-nodule abundance, sediment shear strength) and others (e.g. bathymetric profile and slope, mass flux) have been accumulated. Using this dataset, descriptive statistics and cross-correlations were performed to select the benthic environmental impact testing site. Outcome of this analysis suggests that the potential benthic impact testing site would be a rectangular-shape area (10 km × 10 km) and located at 10°27'~10°33'N, 131°53'~131°58'W, which is latitudinally the same as the preservation reference area.

A simplified two-dimensional plane strain numerical technique for the non- linear modelling of a tabular mining excavation in brittle host rock under high stress conditions is described. The model has been developed using relatively straightforward assumptions based on extensive underground investigation of the fracturing and deformation of rock at the stope face in deep gold mines on the Witwatersrand, together with observed rock behaviour under laboratory conditions. The reef rock is modelled as a linear string of yielding elements which interact horizontally, while the elastic rockmass remote from the reef is modelled using boundary element techniques. This elementary technique is shown to produce results which agree closely with the observed behaviour of the fractured rock during the mining of a remnant pillar

Backfilling is one of the options available to the mining engineer in mine design. The decision as to the type of backfill is dependent on the purpose for which it will be used. For example, in a situation where high-grade, steeply dipping multiple reefs are to be mined, the purpose would be the following: ? to facilitate maximum extraction; a ? to minimize loss of fines; ? to allow closely spaced multiple reefs to be mined; and a ? to create a working platform. The physical properties required which will satisfy the abovementioned requirements can then be defined; the design of the fill plant, as well as the transport of the fill, will be governed by these considerations. The same procedure is also adopted in deciding on backfill in single- reef gold mines. The first question to be asked is the purpose of the fill. It may be to reduce the energy release rate, for environmental reasons, to reduce timber usage, to improve productivity, to reduce stoping costs, to obtain higher mining extraction, and so on. Only after one, or a combination, of these factors has been selected, can the specifications for the fill be decided on, and the plant designed accordingly. The introduction of backfill at Sheba Gold Mine will be used to illustrate the procedure adopted by Anglovaal in determining the type of fill required.

During the last decade, use of freeze conditioning agents (FCA) to ease unloading and handling of both run-of-mine and washed coal during periods of cold weather has become an accepted practice by the coal industry. This paper reviews some of the mechanical means of easing the handling of coal during periods of cold weather, as well as their use in conjunction with FCA's. Factors required to promote a successful cold weather handling program are also covered. Mechanisms by which FCA's function and the influence of various substrate characteristics on the ultimate response to freeze conditioning agent performance are discussed. A modified approach to freeze conditioning is presented.

The Hartley layered mafic igneous complex within the Great Dyke of Zimbabwe contains economically-recoverable quantities of platinum group metals and gold, nickel, copper and cobalt. The recoverable metals are concentrated in a thin gently-dipping stratigraphic unit - the Main Sulphide Zone. The Hartley Platinum mine, jointly owned by BHP and Delta Gold NL, is scheduled to come on stream at the end of 1996 at an initial mining rate of 2.16 million tonnes per annum and will produce approximately 150 000 oz of platinum and 3300 tonnes per annum of nickel, as well as saleable amounts of palladium (110 000 oz), rhodium (11 500 oz) and copper (2232 tonnes).

The kimberlites of northern Europe are related with a large crustal block having a northwest-southeast orientation. Kimberlites penetrate the Archean formations of crystalline basement, Late Proterozoic rocks, which are overlapped by Middle Carboniferous and younger deposits. The kimberlites bodies include pipes, dikes and sills of Upper Devonian age. Within the region, rocks of two magmatic series form diamond-bearing kimberlites. Aluminum rocks form a new type of diamond-bearing rock that is not found in other diamond provinces. Kimberlites of this region are characterized by highly developed deuteric alterations, a low content of associate minerals, the presence of two diamond generations and an increased content of jewelry-grade diamonds.

The rnunber of Cenozoic volcanoes which has already been found in China surpasses 600. An ancient Chinese tourist, Xu Xiake (1587-1641 in the Ming Dynasty), mentioned in his travel notes the volcanoes and hot 'springs in Tengchong, a country of the Yunnan Province, 400 years ago. In 1927, the geologist, Yun Zhanli, expounded generally on the recent volcano distribution in China. In the '70's, China not only accomplished aerial photography and produced topographic and geological naps covering the whole country, but also obtained a new understanding of the geographic distribution and process of development of the Cenozoic volcanoes through Landsat imagery; interpretation and ground verification, together with C14 isotope dating and analysis of volcanic rocks.

The appearance of the Cornish miner in South Australia was, in the simplest terms, the result of resource development economics. In Cornwall in the middle of the 19th century tin and copper mining was declining, while in the new colony of South Australia copper mining was booming. Experienced hard rock miners in Cornwall there- fore escaped unemployment at home by accepting an assisted passage to South Australia. There, in a colony where they were needed, they made their skills available and received good wages. There are many testimonies which support this simple thesis. Take for example the following extracts from contemporary newspapers in Corn- wall: Persons of small capital will find this an excellent opportunity for emigrating to the young and thriving colony ... The miner will find a rich and unbroken field for his operations. The Colony abounds with minerals... (West Briton, 19 July 1844) Miners make a great deal of money here (South Australia). All of them earn ú2 to ú3 per week and in many cases when they have a portion of the mine on tribute one person has cleared ú100 in a couple of months or so. (Cornwall Royal Gazette, 21 July 1848)
