Coals occurring in nature are characterized by various properties. According to Polish norms, the classification of coals taking into consideration their calorific value contains coals from type 31 (flaming coal) until type 43 (meta-anthracite). The samples of coal of type 31 were taken for investigation. To this purpose, the approximations of ash contents and density distribution functions were done for this coal type (determination of marginal distribution functions). They were the basis for application of so-called Morgenstern distribution functions to approximate the function Z=L (?), where Z is ash contents and ? - coal density. Then, the comparison between obtained results was performed and the results were statistically evaluated. They are the basis for the further research of other types of coals.

Mining of the red iron ores of the Birmingham district has been carried on energetically during the past 60 years, and their development has created a large iron and steel manufacturing center, the only important one in the South. The district produces approximately 10 per cent. of all the iron ore of the United States (80 per cent. of the Alabama ore mined is red ore); also, 40 of the 400 blast furnaces of the country are in the district tributary to Birmingham. The rapid growth of the district has been made possible through investigations that resulted in radical changes in furnace practice, and a still greater impetus will come from the study of the low-grade, high-silica ores, as a result on which they will be made amenable to treatment by concentration. Mining practice in this district has been comparatively simple because of the occurrence of the ore; but with the rapid extension of the workings and the disturbed condition of the ore bed at some distance from the outcrop, more difficult conditions are encountered and the tendency is toward worse rather than better conditions. Should the high-silica ores of the lower bench of the Big Seam become available through beneficiation, mining practice will have to be modified to meet the new conditions, which will be rendered more difficult by the increased weight of cover that will exist at considerable distances from the outcrop. Support of workings will require greater attention and the efficient and economical operation of the mines will depend largely on the successful solution of the problems of working and handling the ore. History and EaRly Development The first explorers of the coal and mineral lands of Alabama were blacksmiths and mechanics mustered out of the army after the war of 1812. These men recognized the red rock of the Birmingham district as iron ore, and utilized it in making cooking utensils and farm implements. The first blast furnace was built and operated at Russellville in 1818, where also was a foundry and rolling mill. Soft ore was used at that time, but, in 1864, the first red hematite ore of Red Mountain was smelted, near Irondale. In the Bridge River area of the Lillooet district in central British Columbia there is a remarkable exception to this rule. The Pioneer mine has a simple fissure over 3000 ft. long, with no faults of more than a few feet and with only minor variations in width; the Bralorne mine, 2½ miles away at the other end of the same intrusion, has developed one of the most intricate vein and fault systems in the West. Hinged faults displace the main vein for hundreds of feet, and sometimes become valuable veins themselves. The width of ore varies in a few yards from 2 to 60 ft. Changes in grade of ore are just as abrupt. The rocks that follow the veins or are cut by them often grade into one another or into the ore with no definite contacts. Although the complexity of the structure has left many problems unsolved, the development has indicated a fascinating geological pattern. The Bralorne is in the eastern portion of the Coast Range, 55 miles by spectacular mountain road from the Pacific Great Eastern Railway station of Bridge River. The adit tunnel runs easterly from Cadwallader Creek, a tributary of Bridge River that flows into the Fraser River. Steep mountains rise from 3300 ft. elevation above sea level at the creek to peaks and ridges at 8000 to 9000 ft. altitude. The lower slopes are heavily wooded while above 5000 ft. bare rocks, glaciers and snow-fields extend far above timber line. See Fig. 1. Story of the Bralorne The Lorne claim, staked in 1897, was one of the earliest lode locations in the Bridge River district. At that time it was 70 miles by steep and treacherous trail from the railway. For the next 15 years Arthur Noel, Will Haylmore and other local prospectors mined the small, irregular, oxidized quartz veins to a maximum depth of 200 ft., and treated the ore in arrastres and later a five-stamp mill. THE occurrence of the (100) [lOO] or "cube" texture upon annealing of cold-rolled copper has been much investigated.' The conditions favorable for its formation were found to be a high final annealing temperaturez or long annealing time," a high reduction of area in cold rolling prior to the final anneal,' and a small penultimate grain size." The effects of penultimate grain size and of rolling reduction were found by Cook and Richards4 to be interrelated in such a way that any combination of them giving lower than a certain value of the final average thickness of the grains in the rolled material leads to a fairly complete cube texture with a given final annealing time and temperature. Also, according to the same authors, at a higher final annealing temperature a larger average rolled grain thickness, i.e., a lower final rolling reduction, is sufficient than at a lower temperature. These somewhat involved conditions can be understood readily on the basis of recent results obtained at this laboratory. Hsun Hu was able to show recently by means of quantitative pole figure determinations that the rolling texture of tough pitch copper, which is almost identical with that of 2s aluminum: may be described roughly as a scatter around four symmetrical "ideal" orientations not very far from (123) [112]. In the case of aluminum, annealing leads to retain-ment of the rolling texture with some decrease of the scatter around the four "ideal" orientations, and to the appearance of a new texture component, namely the cube texture." A microscopic technique, revealing grain orientations by means of oxide film and polarized light, showed that the retainment of the rolling texture is achieved through two different mechanisms operating simultaneously, namely "re-crystallization in situ," and the formation of strain-free grains in orientations different from their local surroundings, but identical with that of another component of the rolling texture. Thus, a local area in the rolled material, having approximately the orientation of one of the four "ideal" components of the texture, partly retains its orientation during annealing, while recovering from its cold-worked condition, and it is partially absorbed at the same time by invading strain-free grains of an orientation approximately corresponding to that of another "ideal" texture component. The reorientation here, as well as in the formation of the strain-free grains of "cube" orientation, may be described as a [Ill] rotation of about 40°, see Fig. 1 of ref. 6. The preferential growth of grains in such orientations is a result of the high mobility of grain boundaries corresponding to this relative orientation.' " It appears very likely that in copper the mechanism of the structural changes during annealing is similar to that observed in aluminum (except for the much greater frequency of formation of annealing twins in copper). In both metals the new grains of cube orientation have a great advantage over the new grains with orientations close to one of the four components of the rolling texture. This advantage stems from their symmetrical orientation with respect to all four retained rolling texture components of the matrix; they are oriented favorably for growth at the expense of all of these four orientations. As a result, the growth of the "cube grains" is favored over the growth of the others, as soon as the new grains have grown large enough to be in contact with portions of the matrix containing elements of more than one, and preferably of all four component textures. It is clear that this critical size is smaller and, therefore, attained earlier in the annealing process if the structural units, such as grains and kink bands, representing the four matrix orientations are smaller, i. e., if the average thickness of the rolled grains is smaller. Hence, for a given annealing time and temperature, a smaller penultimate grain size and a higher rolling reduction both tend to increase that fraction of the annealing period during which the above condition is satisfied. Consequently, the percentage volume of material assuming the cube orientation increases. The same is true also for increasing time and temperature of annealing when the penultimate grain size and the final rolling reduction are constant, since the average size attained by the new grains during annealing increases with the annealing time and temperature. For the same reason, at higher annealing temperatures a given volume percentage of cube texture can be obtained with larger rolled grain thickness (larger penultimate grain size, or smaller rolling reduction) than at lower annealing temperatures. The well-known conspicuous sharpness of the cube texture may be interpreted as a result of the fact that selective growth of only those grains is favored that have an orientation closely symmetrical with respect to all four components of the deformation texture and exhibit, therefore, a high boundary mobility in contact with each. The effect of alloying elements in suppressing the cube texture, as described by Dahl and Pawlek,' appears to be associated with a change in the rolling texture. For face-centered cubic metals, such as copper, which do exhibit the cube texture upon annealing, the rolling texture is always of the type described above, i. e., scattered around four "ideal orientations" of approximately (123) [112]. The addition of certain alloying elements, such as about 5 pct Zn or 0.05 pct P in copper, has the as yet unexplained effect of changing the rolling texture into the (110) 11121 type. This texture consists of two fairly sharply developed, twin related components. In such cases, as in 70-30 brass and in silver, the annealing texture again is related to the rolling texture by a [lll] rotation of about 30°, however, because of the different rolling texture to start from, it has no cube texture component. At higher temperatures, both in brassm and in silver," grain growth leads to a further change in texture: A [lll] rotation of the same amount, but in reversed direction, back to the original rolling texture.

Paper presented at the IAGOD international symposium on mineralisation related to mafic and ultramafic rocks, held in Orleans, France, 1-3 September 1993. The Zinca area was chosen as a suitable location for an investigation of the weathering and secondary dispersion of platinum group metals from the Zone. It was concluded that platinum is immobile while within weathered rock, its mineral phases tending to alter from primary sulphides and tellurides to secondary Pt-Fe alloys. Palladium is variably mobile in weathered rock. In stream sediments Pt occurs mainly as small, dense, discrete particles, giving rise to a nugget effect, whereas Pd probably occurs as much finer particles or chemically adsorbed on to a suitable substrate. Pt shows a rapid decrease in sediments downstream from mineralisation, whereas Pd has a much slower downstream decay

"During a year of challenges in the mining industry, two groups collaborated Aug. 17- 20 for a joint conference on industrial minerals of the Upper Midwest. Hosted in Minneapolis, MN, the 4th Annual SME Twin Cities technical conference and the 51st Annual Forum on the Geology of Industrial Minerals (FGIM) drew attendees from throughout the United States and Canada.Highlights of the event included a one-day field trip on Aug. 17 to a crushed stone and gravel mining and processing operations near the Twin Cities, followed by a visit to a historic mine tunnel within the St. Peter sandstone formation. The latter was used as a speakeasy during America’s prohibition era. A two-day field trip on Aug. 19-20 made stops in central and northeastern Minnesota at a granite quarry and processing plant, a peat harvesting and packaging plant, an iron mine and taconite processing plant, and a silica sand storage and loading operation. In a nod to one of Minnesota’s celebrated luminaries, the group also stopped in Hibbing to visit the boyhood home of Robert Allen Zimmerman, better known to the rest of the world as Bob Dylan.A full-day technical program featuring talks on environmental impacts of silica sand mining, regulatory updates, mine land reclamation and methods for identifying construction material failures (alkali-silica reaction) was bookended by the two field trips.According to Minnesota state geologist Harvey Thorleifson, the keynote speaker of the technical program, “This joint SME and Forum on the Geology of Industrial Minerals conference is a reflection of the important role of the mining industry in society, of the important role that partnerships play, and of the prominence of industrial minerals on the Twin Cities region and iron ore on a national scale.” He added, “While this is a tough year for the mining industry in the region, we are confident in the strength of the profession and the industry in the medium term, as we anticipate a superb SME national conference in Minneapolis in 2018.”"

This topic addresses historic and current techniques of excavating, supporting and lining tunnels of 4 m (13.1 ft) and smaller. Special considerations relate to the economics of working in close quarters and the sizes of tunnel which achieve the required facility in the optimum economic manner are discussed. The excavation discussion includes TBM, conventional and special techniques for hard rock, soft ground, subaqueous, free and compressed air tunnels. Internal and external support methods discusses timbering, steel ribs, bolting, strapping, shotcreting, grouting, and freezing. Lining methods include cast-in-place concrete, concrete pipe, segmented linings, shotcrete, and others.

Application of teleoperated and automated mobile equipment in underground metal mines represents a promising avenue to overcome some of the challenges facing the industry. This paper addresses the issues of overall effectiveness of the autonomous loading and haulage equipment in comparison with conventional man-operated machines. It overviews and discusses the factors affecting availability, utilization and production rate. It puts an emphasis on some problems and risks not present in conventional man-operated systems, as well as their character and criticality. It stresses the need to analyze the factors affecting OEE of the autonomous equipment more in-depth than it has been done up to date and to take them into consideration at the stage of feasibility studies. The paper concludes with some recommendations and indicates the directions of the future research in this field.

A análise por microscopia óptica em quase partículas, obtidas após a aglomeração a frio, é de grande importância para o entendimento do processo de sinterização, pois permite determinar aspectos qualitativos e quantitativos da aglomeração, assim como identificar o arranjo microestrutural entre as partículas nucleantes, aderentes, combustíveis e fundentes das misturas a sinterizar. Neste contexto, foi desenvolvida uma metodologia para preparar e analisar ao microscópio amostras da mistura a sinterizar, visando auxiliar na identificação de relações entre as suas características e os parâmetros de produção e de qualidade do sínter. O método desenvolvido permite determinar a porcentagem de quase partículas, de partículas não aglomeradas e de partículas micropelotizadas em cada amostra. Além disso, permite identificar e medir as dimensões do material (minério, sínter, coque, fundente, quartzo) que constitui o núcleo de cada quase partícula e avaliar o material que não aglomera.

The effect of grinding media performance on milling and operational behaviour was demonstrated under different selected conditions of calcium carbonate slurry milling. A variety of grinding media materials and bead sizes, along with two different stirrer tip speeds, were used in the grinding process to generate a particle size reduction of the calcium carbonate (CaCO3). To determine the optimum milling parameters the collected test data were used to calculate and evaluate specific energy as well as stress intensity under different milling conditions. Solid state galvanic cell with CaF2 as the electrolyte was employed for determining the thermodynamic properties of Nb-Al binary alloys in the temperature range of 973-1073 K. The activities and activity coefficients of Al in NbAl3 were determined. The experimental procedure and the design and construction of the experimental setup have been also explained in detail. Aluminum activity in NbAl3 increased with increase in temperature and shows a strong negative deviation from ideality. The activities of aluminum in NbAl3 were determined to be 0.0165 and 0.0289 at 973 and 1073 K respectively. The stability of NbAl3 has been compared with other available intermetallic systems.

Geophysical studies have extended seaward in recent years, and the important discoveries which have been made have led to a better understanding of geological processes. A present source of certain minerals, the sea will eventually serve as an important source of desalinated water. The continental helves, in particular, represent a potential mineral resource. The expansion of Canadian oceanographic effort that is now underway will eventually lead to the exploitation of the wealth beneath the sea. THE subject of this symposium, which emphasizes the word "geophysics," the specialties of the speakers who are contributing and the nature of the audience at first made me believe that I, a a physical oceanographer, would be out of place. However, I shall undertake to classify myself as a geophysicist, and shall arrange my remarks on my specialty o that they might be of interest to those of you who are predominantly geologists, metallurgists or mining engineers.

At the SME Fall Meeting held in Phoenix, Ariz. last October, Ernest P. Hall, addressing an Air and Water Pollution session, noted that water pollution caused by acid drainage from bituminous coal measures had begun long before recorded history. "Until recently," he said, "man did not begin to understand the physical phenomena which took place to cause [it] and even today he does not know what can be done to prevent it." CAUSES "It is known from the reports of early explorers that drainage from bituminous coal measures was causing water pollution before coal mines were opened on this continent. They noted the nature of the polluted water in the runs and creeks and predicted the presence of substantial deposits of coal based on the appearance and character of the water. Even today, polluted water drains from virgin coal areas which have not been touched by mining machines," Mr. Hall said.

No symposium on die casting could be complete without consideration of the methods of formula and impurity control. No consideration of control would be complete without discussion of that new tool of the analytical chemist and inspector, the quartz spectrograph. Just as there is an increased appreciation of the possible applications of the die-casting process and of die castings, so too is there, slowly but surely, of the spectrograph. At present the role of the instrument might well be compared with that of brass or magnesium die castings. Neither is as widely understood or known as they will be. Product specifications are increasing and are getting more explicit and often more rigid. The designer, metallurgist and production engineer or superintendent will be forced to depend more and more on the chemical laboratory. Sampling, as well as analyses, testing and inspection problems will grow. The chemical laboratory must meet its increased responsibility and use of the spectrograph will become more common. Advantages of increased precision, greater speed, lessened labor and often lower costs cannot be ignored. It will be the purpose of this paper in part to outline the respective fields of chemical and spectrographic analyses and to indicate where one may overlap the other and in part to indicate certain possible sources of contamination of zinc-base die-cast alloys in particular.
