Mt. Newman Mining Co. is now completing an expansion program, begun even before initial construction was complete, which will result in the ability to ship up to 35 million tpy of iron ore by early 1973. Located in the Pilbara region of Western Australia, the mine at Mt. Whaleback is about 700 road miles north of Perth and 265 railroad miles south of the port facilities at Port Hedland. Development of the tertiary crushing and screening facilities best illustrates the orderly, but rapid, sequence through which the capacity of the port loading terminal has been expanded. When the present program is completed, crushing and shiploading capability will reach - - 35 million tpy. Operations commenced in 1969 with 3 crusher lines in service; and despite the 5-million annual ton rating, 6.46 million tons of ore were shipped during the first full year of operation. With continuing increase in ore sales, expansion to an annual capacity of 12 million tons was authorized, and installation of two more crusher lines was begun. As a part of this program, provision for installation of a sixth crusher at some future date was included in the planning; but before construction was completed, new ore sales contracts demanded further expansion to an annual rate of 20 million tons, and the sixth crusher line was authorized. The distributing and collecting conveyors had been designed for extension in length and increase in capacity, therefore, conveyor service was provided for the additional crushers with additional belting and hardware only.

PRESIDENT LITTLEJOHN: Before we open the discussion on the Utah mining laws, I want to bring out what I consider a slight misunderstanding on some of the things that I said this forenoon relative to our comparison of accidents. I did not mean to infer that we, as mine officials, are satisfied we have done the best we can to eliminate the accidents, when I was talking about a four-to- one comparison. I do not want any- one to get the idea in their heads that I do not think we are doing all we can. There is not any of us who can state that, even if we better these figures. It is the general understanding that these figures are based upon ratios per thousand man shifts and not upon the tonnage basis that we use. If it were based upon a tonnage basis, I think the figures would be pretty nearly reversed, for we are producing from two to four tons more per man than they do in Great Britain. The discussion will now be continued as I said this morning. There is a gentleman in the audience here that is as guilty of making these laws as I was, and I am quite sure when speaking he will confine himself to the subject of Utah Mining Laws and the prospective results. Before Mr. Monay starts with his paper, I want it understood that this discussion must be finished by 2:30 for the reason that we have still quite a lot of business before us this afternoon.

Introduction. DURING the latter part of 1915 and the first half of 1916, the writer held the position of geologist in connection with the conservation work instituted by the U. S. Bureau of Mines, on oil and gas land belonging to the Indians of the Five Civilized Tribes in Oklahoma. The duty of the geologist was to correlate formations containing oil, gas,-and water, and to determine the relations of these substances in the different formations so that the conservation agents might carry on their work most intelligently. On account of the rapid development of the Cushing field, which lies in the western part of the Creek Nation, much work was clone there by the inspection force. In the course of the geologic studies a large amount of information was collected, which, on analysis, has disclosed some interesting facts worthy of publication. The report, of which the following remarks are an abstract, has been prepared and submitted to the U. S. Geological Survey for publication. This report is now (June, 1917) in the press and will doubtless be issued in a few weeks. Methods Used In addition to the structure maps showing the folding of the Pawhuska limestone, which crops out in several places in the Coshing field, separate structure maps of the three most important productive sands-the Layton (Fig. 2), Wheeler, and Bartlesville-have been prepared. The U.S. Bureau of Mines is conducting research on the oxidation resistance and structural stability of Fe-(0-8)Cr-(0-16)Ni-(0-16)Mn-3.5Si-lAl alloys as potential substitutes for high-Cr stainless steels. Oxidation tests were conducted in air over the temperature range of 6000 to 9000 C for up to 1,000 h. Microstructures were analyzed at room temperature after hot rolling. The oxidation properties and the structural stability were found to be greatly affected by the Cr and Mn levels. Although substitution of Mn for Ni increased the oxidation rate, the Mn helped to stabilize the austenitic microstructure. Decreasing the Cr content or increasing the Mn content produced higher oxidation rates and earlier oxide spalling. In this study, reaction kinetics, oxide morphologies, and microstructure of the alloys were investigated using scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive X-ray analysis, X-ray diffraction, and electron microprobe analysis.

As free milling oxide gold ore reserves are depleted, more mining companies are having to evaluate the available alternatives for treating refractory deposits. The selection of a treatment process can be very difficult; and, despite the claims of their respective proponents, there is no one process that will continuously prove superior. Selection of the optimum process for an individual deposit is contingent on the size of the deposit, the grade of the deposit and the refractory nature of the ore. Since extensive metallurgical test programs are usually required to determine the optimum extraction process, an inappropriate initial selection may prove costly and time consuming. This paper discusses the steps involved in evaluating a refractory ore in order to expedite the evaluation of the required process through the feasibility study stage.

The Melbourne City Link Tunnels have been constructed through a BOOT process, the largest undertaking in Australia to date. Tolling commenced on the 1.6 kilometer Domain tunnel in April 2000, and the 3.4 kilometer Burnley tunnel December 2000. The project was delivered by design construct contracting and under ISO 9000. There were a number of major challenges in completing the tunnels, including much higher than expected groundwater infiltration, hydrostatic pressures greater than 6 bar, and unique design and construction applications required to prepare the tunnels for service. This paper covers the end play and final delivery of the tunnels.

The process for determining phosphorus in iron now in most general use in the laboratories of iron and steel works, is, I think, the one proposed bv Mr. Emmerton." In this process the solution of the iron for precipitation by ammonium molybdate is effected by treating the iron with nitric acid, evaporating to hard dryness in a dish, taking up with hydrochloric acid and driving off the greater portion of the hydrochloric by nitric acid. This procedure accomplishes, first, the destruction of all the carbonaceous matters; and, second; it renders all the silica insoluble. Natural gas was introduced to the Melbourne reticulation system in April 1969 and since that date sales to industrial consumers in the Gas & Fuel Corporation of Victoria area of supply, have increased by over 50% This increase has occurred despite the fact that the areas in which the new fuel is available have been dependent on the progress of the conversion operation from manufactured gas. The half way mark for conversion was reached in May 1970. The reason for the adoption of natural gas by industrial users is usually the result of objective financial analysis leading to the conclusion that the new fuel will give the lowest overall production cost. Many factors are involved in such an analysis of which the price of the fuel is only one. Amongst other important elements in the cost calculation are:- -ò òò -(1) The effect of fuel on product quality (2) Maintenance and handling costs for alternative fuel. In addition to economic gains for the individual user, the use of natural gas should benefit the whole community through its effect on such things as, air pollution and overseas balance of payments.

"A new method of managing electricity to reduce costs andimprove profits is discussed. Before taking steps to better manage electricity, it is essential to understand the terms peak demand and energy and their effect on an electrical bill. As part of an ongoing research program, the Bureau of Mines, U.S. Department of the Interior, is monitoring surface subsidence over six longwall panels at three Utah coal mines. These sites are characterized by mining depths of 244 to 610 meters (800 to 2,000 ft .), thick and massive sandstone layers in the overburden strata, multiple seam mining, extraction heights of approximately 1.8 to 3 meters (6 to 10 ft.), and rugged surface topography. Maximum subsidence, angle of draw, timing relative to mining, horizontal strain, and rate of subsidence development are being determined and correlated with mining and geologic variables. Results to date indicate the maximum vertical subsidence over the monitored panels ranges from 0.6 to 0.9 meters (2 to 3 ft.). The major factors controlling the amount of subsidence are the panel dimensions and the status of adjacent panel mining. Only minor surface cracking at the panel ends was evident at any of the sites. In all cases, there was a time lag of several months between the start of mining and subsidence at the surface. As subsequent panels are monitored and additional data become available, better estimates of the effect of various site characteristics on the subsidence will be possible. Ultimately, improved prediction capabilities will allow mine operators in the West to evaluate the potential for subsidence-related damage which could affect the current or future land use above the mine.

An experimental investigation of the relative effectiveness of standard bullets and "shaped charges" in perforating dense, hard formations is reported. A method is described which simulates the conditions under which a shot is normally fired. Results are evaluated on the basis of depth of penetration, extent 01 Fracturing. extent and nature of formation damage, and other physical characteristics. INTRODUCTION A study was made of the relative merits of bullets and "shaped charges'' as applied to well completions in hard, dense formations such as those encountered in the Permian Basin. The planning of the laboratory program stipulated that core samples should be prepared and mounted in such a way that perforation shots of either kind"" could be fired into them, keeping the factors pertinent to good shooting practice similar to what they would be in a well. The shooting was done in a buried tank. with the sample and shooting equipment covered with water. The depth of water was calculated to he sufficient to simulate the inertial effects of well fluids for the duration of an explosion (a few micro-seconds). Flow measurements were attempted on the specimens after perforation. Due to the lack of uniformity of the limestone, shale breaks. etc., these measurements proved to be of little value to the study. The mounting materials were removed. so that the character of the penetration. fracturing, etc., could be observed. METHOD Laboratory samples were selected from the hard. dolomitic sand cores from Block 31 Field. Core pieces having a 3 3/4 in. diameter and a useful length of 10 to 12 in. were used. Selection was aimed at those pieces having a minimum of shale streaks and other irregularities. The ends were cut off square Manuscript received in the Petroleum Branch office June 28, 1951. Prior to lbeing mounted. the cores were soaked in water to prevent them from absorbing water out of the wet concrete, thus weakening it. A set of steel capsules was fabricated for holding the core Samples. Seven-in. casing was cut in two-ft lengths. of which one end was closed by "orange-peeling" and welding, and the other was threaded to accept a standard bull plug. The bull plugs were fitted with copper tube connections .so that pressure could be applied when the capsules were made up. The cores were mounted in the capsules by means of wire centralizers whose function was to hold the Core in proper position while concrete was poured and set. WHILE vast quantities of limestone and dolomite are used in metallurgy, the estimated production in 1926 being 23,860,000 tons, there are many problems connected with their use which have not received adequate study. The literature of metallurgy is notably lacking in comprehensive discussions of fluxing or furnace stone. Approximately 900 lb. of limestone is used for every long ton of pig iron produced in the blast furnace, but this important constituent of the charge receives little attention compared with the intensive study that has been applied to ores and fuels, the other important constituents of the charge. In an effort to elucidate some of the doubtful points, the writer has made a wide review of metallurgical literature, and has had the disappointing experience of finding not more than a paragraph or two on metallurgical stone for each two or three thousand pages of literature reviewed. Furthermore, the limited information supplied is in some instances contradictory and even absurd. For example, a correspondent in a reputable metallurgical magazine classifies magnesia and silica together as impurities in flux "that must be melted and run off as slag." From the furnace operator's viewpoint it is desirable that as complete knowledge as possible be obtained concerning the effects of chemical composition and physical character of the stone on its action in the furnace and on the quality of the metal produced. A better knowledge of these features is advantageous also to the quarry operator in that it enables him to work more intelligently in producing stone that will best satisfy the metallurgists' requirements. The following pages comprise a brief compilation of data now available. Much of the information is well established and probably acceptable to most metallurgists. On some points there is room for debate, and the chief purpose in presenting a paper at this time is to arouse discussion which will throw more light on controversial points and thus assist the author in preparing a more comprehensive and accurate dis¬cussion of metallurgical limestone problems.

Employee relations are structured to provide prompt resolution of complaints and differences. No lost time due to industrial relations differences has been encountered during the history of the mine.Safety and Loss ControlAll mines are concerned and occupied with a wide range of activities to ensure the safety of its employees. Selbaie is no exception. Programs to achieve success in safety and loss control have been implanted since the start of construction and development at Selbaie and have followed three interesting stages of evolution."

Por ello, es más fácil mantener un nivel alto de cianuro, que un nivel alto de oxígeno disuelto en la solución, principalmente si se utiliza aire en lugar de oxígeno.

THE revision of this chapter has presented a problem in that heavy-medium jigging has come into the picture since the chapter was originally written (seven years ago), a practice in which an artificial medium is built up and maintained in the jig circuit. As this development makes the jig a "true" heavy-medium process, the method belongs in the chapter dealing with such processes. Although putting this development in its proper position in the book involves some repetition, this seems to be the best procedure, and it has been followed. As the chapter on jigs in its original form was intended to be more or less a handbook on jigging for the use of the practical man, and the great bulk of the material therein is still generally applicable, the text has been re-used in large measure. Two major changes should be noted: (1) the portion of the text relating to the refuse-withdrawing mechanism of the McNally-Pittsburg jig has been entirely rewritten, and (2) a description of the hutch valves on the Jeffrey jigs has been added. Jigging is the stratification of a mass of solid particles in upward and downward pulsations. The stratification usually is effected in a rectangular open-top container having a perforated bottom through which the pulsations of water are applied to the materials to be separated; in separating coal, to a mass of coal and refuse. Jigging usually is a continuous process involving three steps: (1) the reception of the raw coal, (2) the stratification of the coal and refuse so that the refuse settles to the screen plate, and (3) the overflow of the cleaned coal and the withdrawal of the refuse collected on the screen. The jig is the most universal washer ever devised. It is handling in practice a wide range of closely sized coals and ores, mixed sizes of coal from 8-in. to 0 through 3/4-in. to 0, and mixed sizes of ores down to 7/32-in. to 0and even smaller. It is treating materials ranging in specific gravity from that of gold at 19 to that of coal at 1.30. It is handling feeds in which the proportions of high-gravity materials range from 90 per cent or higher, as for some iron ores, to 10 per cent or less for some coals. It is handling feeds containing all shapes of particles-round, rectangular, and flat. It is handling simple separation problems and difficult separation problems.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines treated mixed and contaminated super alloy scrap by pyrometallurgical and hydrometallurgical methods to separate and recover metal values. Best results were obtained by leaching Zn-treated or atomized scrap with HCI-02 at 9SO C and 50 psig 02' This resulted in dissolving approxi-mately 98 pet of the AI, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni, and Zn while rejecting over 98 pct of the Mo, Nb, Ta, Ti, W, and Zr as an insoluble refractory residue. Chlorine was successfully substituted for HCI to leach Zn-treated scrap but was unsuccessful for leaching atomized scrap. The leaching solution was treated by pH adjustment and hydrothermal precipitation at 2000 C for 4 h to remove AI, Cr, Fe, and other contaminants as a filterable precipitate. Recovery of Co and Ni would be accomplished by solvent extraction and e1ectrowinning. Chromium recovery as a ferroalloy was demonstrated.

Tensile specimens were prepared from a single grain of an epitaxially grown Al-CuAl2 eutectic ingot. The eutectic lanzellae were oriented parallel and perpendicular to the tensile axis of the specimens. Since the composite was of the eutectic composition, the aluminum-rich matrix could dissolve up lo 5. 7 wt pct Cu in solid solution and, therefore, was amenable to strengthening by precipitation hardening. The tensile properties of the eutectic single crystals were determined at room temperature as functions of interlamel-lar spacing, platelet orientation, and thermornechanical trealment. The obserced variations in composite stress and modulus with respect to the level of&apos; composite strain are discussed in terms of premature fracture of CuAlz platelets, a distribution function for the strength of the lamellae, and unequal strains due to localized fracture of&apos; platelets. The discontinuous fiber composite model of Kelly and Tyson is modgied to account for a changing distribution of fiber lengths during composite loading. The tensile properties at elevated temperatures were determined for the direc-tionally solidified eutectic oriented with platelets parallel to the tensile axis. The observed properties are attributed to the onset of plasticity of the CuAL2 phase above 150°C. DURING the investigation of whisker- and fiber-reinforced metallic matrix composites in recent years, two major problem areas have developed: 1) The fabrication of the composite involves tedious handling techniques in order to obtain a unidirection-ally aligned and uniformly spaced set of whiskers in the metal matrix. 2) Due to weak interfacial bond strengths or because of the formation of additional embrittling phases at the metal-fiber interface during long-time exposure or fabrication at elevated temperatures, many composite systems have exhibited considerably lower strengths than those predicted by a law of mixtures analysis.&apos; These problems have been bypassed by the technique of growing whiskers and plates of high-strength materials in a ductile metal matrix by controlled unidirectional eutectic solidification.2 The tensile properties of directionally solidified A1-CuA12 eutectic are presented here. This alloy consists of a ductile aluminum matrix, containing up to 5.7 wt pct Cu in solid solution, which is amenable to precipitation hardening by heat treatment and a reinforcing high modulus CuAlz intermetallic phase. The two phases are present in the form of alternating platelets or lamellae. The microstructural stability of this unidirectionally solidified alloy at elevated temperatures has been studied extensively.3.4 and preliminary tensile and bend tests have been reported. 5-7In the present investigation the tensile properties of the A1-CuA1, eutectic have been studied as a function of several ther-momechanical variables: solidification rate. heat treatment. rolling at elevated temperatures. and lamellar orientation. It was felt that the uniformity of structure and excellent interfacial bonding would give tensile properties concomitant with the metal matrix composite theory of strengthening proposed by Kelly and coson. 8-9 The tensile properties that were obtained point to a wide distribution of strengths for the CuAlZ platelets, which leads to large deviations from the predicted mechanical behavior for this composite. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Epitaxial Growth of Eutectic Alloy. The A1-CuA1, eutectic alloy was prepared by an epitaxial growth process. Sections of a master alloy ingot (total impurity content <0.008 pct) were placed in an alundum boat, melted. and directionally solidified to obtain a multigrained plate 12 by 2 by 4 in. This plate was tapered at one end to mate with a seed crystal 1; in. long and 4 by $ in. square. Then the seed-plate combination was placed in an alundum boat which sat in a quartz tube passing through the center of a horizontal resistance wound tube furnace. A dried argon atmosphere was maintained. The temperature gradient in the furnace was such that the liquid-solid interface of the eutectic alloy was located near the end of the furnace and could be observed through the quartz tube. Single-crystal plates were formed by melting the material back to the midpoint of the seed crystal of the desired platelet orientation and then epitaxially growing the plate from the seed by withdrawing the alundum boat from the furnace at a constant rate. This technique was used to produce aluminum and CuA12 lamellae parallel and perpendicular to the transverse direction on the plate. Metallographic examination showed that both phases were continuous across the original liquid-solid interface. It was also possible to grow a plate from two seeds placed side by side: and, although the lamellae of one seed were oriented at 90 deg to those of the second seed, the interface between the two grains remained parallel to the growth direction along the entire ingot length. Maintenance of a straight intergranular boundary during the solidification process was possible as long as both seeds were oriented with their original growth direction parallel to the solidification direction of the plate. Eutectic plates were directionally solidified at rates of 0.2, 1.0. and 4.7 cm per hr and sectioned transversely to the solidification direction to determine the apparent inter lamellar spacing of the lamellae.
