In Australian collieries, solutions to the outburst problem must be implemented in a highly competitive environment which has a low tolerance on negative productivity effects. Solutions are only applicable if the overall viability of the operation remains sound. Minimum time must be spent on alleviation and control measures. This is favoured by simple geology, advanced warning and efficient alleviation and control procedures. Research requirements in support of this include 1. an improved means of predicting the nature and location of outburst zones ahead of the face and, 2. an improved means of measuring the effectiveness of gas drainage. For additional safety at the face, a means of continuously monitoring outburst proneness is required. In general, greater emphasis is required on improved instrumentation.

Adsorption of polymers and transport, rheology and oil recovery efficiency of their solutions were studied in the laboratory to evaluate the use of polymers in waterflood-ing. While a tenfold mobility reduction was obtained with polymer concentrations as low as 0.05 per cent by weight, the mobility reduction depended on the type of polymer, molecular weight, salinity and pH of water, crude oil and capillary properties of the porous media. Choice of a suitable polymer and a workable concentration will have to be tailored for each application. Little reduction in the residual oil saturation can be expected from polymer flooding. Improvement in the volumetric sweep efficiency is possible hut the extent of the improvement can best be evaluated by properly designed field testing. Some aspects of the field use of polymer floods are discussed. INTRODUCTION Waterflooding is a simple, inexpensive secondary recovery method and is being used widely. Innumerable laboratory studies have been made to unravel the fundamentals of the displacement of oil by water and to find the ways of most efficient oil recovery. These studies and a great many field case histories have revealed that the prime cause of poor oil recovery is the inefficient and incomplete sweep of reservoir volume by the injected water. Sweep efficiency is affected by many factors of which the mobility ratio is an important one. Mobility ratio M is defined here as the ratio of water to oil mobilities: M = (k»/y,r)/(k,JJJJ........(1) In Eq. I, the permeabilities are the effective permeabilities and depend on fluid saturations and, hence, change during the different depletion stages in a flood. A wide practice is to use the effective water permeability at residual oil saturation and the effective oil permeability at interstitial water saturation in Eq. 1. If the mobility ratio is greater than one, the mobility ratio is unfavorable and water, being more mobile than oil, would finger through the oil zone resulting in poor oil recovery efficiency. If the mobility ratio is favorable (one or less) the displacement of oil by water occurs more or less in a pistonlike fashion. In some waterfloods. the mobility ratio is unfavorable and any additives by which the mobility of water can be decreased would favor more efficient oil recovery. The thing to bear in mind, however, is whether or not the improvement in oil recovery is sufficient to more than pay out the cost of the additives needed. For example, materials like sugars, alcohols and glycerine reduce water mobility by thickening the water, but the cost of material requirement precludes any field application. For an additive to be useful in water-flooding, it must bring about a large reduction in water mobility at low concentrations; it must be adsorbed only negligibly; and it must not completely plug up the formation. Some synthetic organic polymers have shown promise of meeting these requirements and have been used in the field.'-W owever, no in-depth studies of the rheological, adsorption and oil displacement characteristics of polymer solutions have been reported. The present work is a study of these properties. EXPERIMENTAL In this work, concentrations are given on a weight per volume basis; 0.5 per cent concentration means 0.5 gm of polymer is dissolved in enough water (or NaCl solution) to make 100 ml. A bactericide, usually 0.1 to 0.2 per cent by volume of 38 per cent formaldehyde solution, was used in the polymer solutions. The NaCl solution was 30,000 ppm. Some properties of the polymers studied are given in Table I. Physical properties of all cores used are in Table 2. Flow behavior of polymer solutions was studied by three consecutive flow tests in cores. First, water (or brine) was injected at constant rate of about 1 ft/D to obtain the water mobility. Then, filtered polymer solution (prepared in water or brine) was flowed through the core. Since the rate was constant, increase in the pressure drop across the core reflects decrease in the mobility. A soldagem por brasagem a vácuo promove a união de materiais dissimilares com alto valor agregado. Este trabalho visa estudar a interação química do nitreto de boro hexagonal (h-BN) na interface de ligação brasada do par Kovar®/h-BN. As variáveis de processo são determinantes para formação da junta brasada metalurgicamente estável. O trabalho estuda a molhabilidade do h-BN quando em contato com ligas de adição do sistema eutético Ag-Cu durante a solidificação. Foram conduzidos ensaios no h-BN a fim de caracterizar sua aplicação no sensor de posição do feixe de elétrons (BPM) do projeto do Sirius, e as propriedades que influenciam o seu processamento durante a brasagem, como coeficiente de expansão térmica e molhabilidade superficial. Os ensaios de brasagem com a liga Ag-Cu-4,5Ti, mostraram boa molhabilidade e espalhamento na superfície, favorecendo a formação da junta sem descontinuidades. As reações na interface são complexas no sentido de formação de novas fases e intermetálicos e, influenciadas pela seleção dos materiais, que possuem diferentes temperaturas de fusão e coeficientes de expansão térmica. Os resultados indicam que a seleção da liga com Ti, que é o elemento de ativação, promove a interação na superfície do h-BN com os demais materiais da junta.

Heavy mineral deposits are a source of the economic important element titanium, which is contained in minerals such as ilmenite, pseudorutile and rutile. In the Ranobe heavy minerals deposit these minerals occur not only as primary unaltered minerals but also display various degrees of alteration resulting in an increased titanium content of the deposit. The presence of the various FeTi-oxide minerals? textural relations is a reflection of geological processes and may ultimately be used to unravel the geological history of the deposit. These minerals have different chemical and physical properties that influence metallurgical tests and the quality of products produced from various mineral beneficiation streams. It is therefore of metallurgical importance that the minerals are well characterized, defined and monitored during preliminary beneficiation tests.

The domestic and commercial use of underground space dates back to Neanderthal man living in caves. There are many examples worldwide of the imaginative use of underground excavations, either left by mining or purpose-built. World living trends indicate that an increasing percentage of the population is living in and around major cities. Environmental, social and economic pressures associated with urban expansion can be partially catered for by a well-planned and integrated underground space regime. This paper addresses the types of underground development that are complementary to the economic and environmental pressures associated with urban expansion and high density cities. The paper explores the implications of mining and exploration technology and civil engineering, as well as the ancillary professional disciplines (legal, architecture and planning, sociology and education).

This paper presents a strength formula for the design of coal pillars. The formula is derived from results of laboratory experiments, studying the effects of primary factors influencing the strength of the coal specimens/pillars. Five primary factors, significantly affecting the strength characteristics of the coal specimens/pillars were identified and extensive laboratory investigations were carried out. The five primary factors were namely 1) coefficient of friction between loading platens and coal specimens, 2) elastic properties of the loading platens, 3) coal specimen geometry, 4) coal specimen size, and 5) rate of loading. Four to nine levels of variation for each primary factor on the strength of coal were studied. An empirical formula, implementing the variation of the primary factors affecting the strength of coal specimens/pillars, has been developed. A comparative analysis of the results provided by this and some well known formulae is also presented.

In the spring of 1943, when it was evident that the Tensleep bandstone in the Elk Basin Field, Wyoming and Montana, held a large reserve of petroleum, Bureau of Mines engineers obtained samples of oil from the bottom of nine wells and analyzed them for such physical characteristics as the volumes. of gas in solution. saturation pressures or bubble points, shrinkage in volume caused by the release of gas from solution, expansion of the oil with decrease in pressure, and other related properties. The composition of the gas in solution in the oil was studied. The pressures and temperatures existing in the reservoir and the productivity characteristics of the oil wells were determined. The data obtained indicate that the oil in the Tensleep Reservoir of the Elk Basin Field has unusually varying physiral characteristics, such as a saturation pressure of 1,250 psia and 490 cu ft of gas in solultion in a barrel of oil at the crest of the structure and a saturation pressure of 530 psia and 134 cu ft of gas in solution in a barrel of oil low on the flanks. The hydrogen sulfide content of the gas in solution in the oil varies from 18 per cent for oil on the crest to 5 per cent for oil low on the flanks of the structure. Of even greater significance is the fact that these and other variable characteristics of the reservoir oil are related to the position of the oil in the structure. Many geologists and petroleum engineers have considered that all the oil in a petroleum reservoir has rather uniform physical characteristics and that equilibrium conditions prevailed in all underground accumulations of oil and gas; that such is not always so is borne out by the results of the study by the writers. INTRODUCTION The Rocky Mountain region is one in which may be found striking examples of the unusual in oil and gas accumulations, as is evident from the following: The high helium content (7.6 per cent) of the gas in the Ouray-Leadville limestone sequence in the Rattlesnake Field, New Mexico, and gases of similar helium content in other fields; 50" to 55' API gravity distillate in solution in carbon dioxide gas and recoverable through retrograde condensation, in the North McCallum Field, Colorado; the occurrence of gas, oil, or both in closely related structures contrary to the usual concepts of gravimetric segregation: the accumulation of gas and/or oil in structures closely related to other structures that apparently are more favorable but do not contain oil or gas accumulations; the high hydrogen sulfide content (as high as 42 per cent) of the gas associated with oil in some fields in the Big Horn Basin, Wyoming; and the wide range of fluid chararteristics found in the Elk Basin reservoir. Elk Basin, an interesting old oil field that has been producing oil from the Frontier formation since 1915, is situated in a highly eroded basin resulting from the erosion of the crest of an anticline and some of the underlying softer shales. The field came back into national prominence during 1943 when it became known that it was the largest single reserve of new oil discovered in the United States that year. The Tensleep sandstone was found to contain oil in November. 1942, when a well drilled to a depth of 4,538 ft (44 ft into the Tensleep sandstone) flowed oil at the rate of 2,500 B/D. By the end of 1949, 137 oil-producing wells and five dry holes had been drilled, and approximately 32 million bbl of oil had been produced. Approximately 6,000 acres may be considered productive of oil in the Tensleep Reservoir, and estimates of the oil that will be produced average 200 million bbl. The Tensleep Reservoir has further interest because it ha-greater closure than any oil field in the Rocky Mountain region; the closure of the Elk Basin anticline is variously estimated at 5.000 to 10,000 ft. of which the top 2.00 ft of the structure contained oil. SUBSURFACE OIL SAMPLING Fig. 1 is a structural map of the Elk Basin Tensleep Reservoir, on which the nine wells used in this study and the numbers correvponding to the well designations hereafter referred to are shown. Wells 1. 2, 3, 4, and 8 were tested and sampled during October and November. 1943. and Wells 5, 6. 7, and 9 during June and July, 1944. An electromagnetic type sampler developed by the Bureau of Mines and described by Grandone and Cook' was used in obtaining the subsurface oil samples. As the wells were tubed nearly to bottom, the sampler was run as far as possible in the tubing hut never below the top perforations. In 1984 and 1985 the U.S. Bureau of Mines performed a mineral survey of the South Jackson Mountains Wilderness Study Area covering 60,211 acres of mountainous terrain of Humboldt County in northwestern Nevada. Approximately 550 lode claims have been located within or adjacent to the study area from 1900 to the present. Total recorded production for the area is 28.19 ounces gold, 1,105 ounces silver, 959 pounds copper, 6,016 pounds lead, and 12,446 pounds zinc; an additional two carloads from one mine contained an unknown amount of metal. In early 1986, there were eight active properties with a total of 126 claims. Wescord Resources and Long Lac Exploration (Texas) Inc. are involved in a joint exploration of the Jackson Mountains for volcanogenic massive sulfide deposits. Development at the Claudia mine continues in 1986. Results of the survey indicate that there are no identified mineral resources or reserves within or adjacent to the study area. Twenty-two properties have mineral occurrences containing gold, silver, copper, lead, zinc, iron, antimony, vanadium, and cobalt, with silver, copper, and iron being the most abundant.

Seafloor massive sulfides (SMS) in the western Pacific have received much attention as resources for gold, silver, copper, zinc, and lead (Lenoble, 2000). Since the end of the 1980s, SMS have been found in the back-arc basin and on oceanic island-arc areas. The typical representatives found are in the Okinawa Trough and on the Izu-Ogasawara Arc near Japan (Halbach et al., 1989; Iizasa et al., 1999), in the Lau Basin and the North Fiji Basin near Fiji (Fouquet et al., 1991; Bendel et al., 1993), and in the East Manus Basin near Papua New Guinea (PNG) (Kia and Lasark, 1999). The higher gold, silver, and copper contents in one of the areas increased the chance for profitable mining operation, which was considered by a private company (Malnic, 2001). The company gathered investment money and announced to start the commercial mining from 2010 (www.nautilusminerals.com). On the basis of geological information of the Sunrise Deposit of the Myojin Knoll on the Izu-Ogasawara Arc (Iizasa et al., 1999) and geotechnical characteristics of SMS (Yamazaki and Park, 2003), some preliminary economic validation analyses of the SMS mining in small production scale were reported by one of the authors (Yamazaki et al., 2003; Yamazaki and Park, 2005; Yamazaki, 2007). The results showed high profitability of the SMS mining.

In this paper the effect of the ratio of grinding and grindable size classes (ore lumps, particles and grains) and the guantity of intermediate size classes in the feed of the primary wet autogenous grinding "Cascade" mill is studied and the features of the influence of these factors on the mill capacity are shown. On the basis of the experimental data from Lebedinsky mineral processing plant, where magnetite guartzites are processed, a coefficient of the "total ratio of size classes" in the feed of 9x3 m "Cascade" mill was estimated. It helps to get an evaluation of the effect of ore size classes ratio in mill media on the mill capacity and to work out some ways for its optimization in closed or semiclosed technological circuites of primary autogenous grinding. The operation of the specific energy effects for some intermediate size classes, removed from the mill as circulating load, is proposed to improve its efficiency before regrinding in "Cascade" mill and decrease negative influence of such classes accumulation in the mill media.

The epithermal deposit is hosted by Tertiary volcanic rocks that lie between mid-Miocene normal faults of the Northern Nevada Rift. Petrographic, laser-ablation and metallurgical observations suggested that the gold occurs in two principal forms: native (and electrum) and disseminated in arsenopyrite. It was proposed that gold is distributed between two parageneses with distinct mineralogical associations. Detailed downhole geochemical study supported the observations. Concentrations of Au, Ag, As, Sb and Se were determined from drill core and reverse-circulation cutting composites and contoured on cross-sections. Gold was indeed shown to have a bimodal distribution with the two parts separated spatially and perhaps temporally, implying that two separate genetic processes acted to concentrate gold at Mule Canyon

The microbial leaching of metal sulfides is now an established biotechnological technology. Over the past 25 years, refinements in the engineering design of bioleaching processes have paralleled advances in our understanding of the diversity and role of the micro-organisms driving the process and the mechanisms by which micro-organisms enhance metal sulfide oxidation. Commercial success started with the treatment of refractory gold concentrates using mesophilic micro-organisms, followed by the development of tank bioleaching processes for the treatment of base metal concentrates. This was, initially, a mesophilic process with limited potential for recovery of copper from chalcopyrite concentrates due to slow rates and low copper extractions. The exploitation of thermophiles represents a major breakthrough in the development of bioleaching technology for the treatment of chalcopyrite-containing ores and concentrates. This development also opened the route to heap bioleaching of chalcopyrite ores, which is now a major focus of research programmes and piloting campaigns. This paper reviews the historical development of minerals bioleaching processes and gives an update on the current status of commercial tank and heap bioleach operations around the world.

Natural chromium-bearing spinels (chromites), which are used as refractory materials in basic steelmaking, are the only commercially important chromium ore and are also encountered as difficult-to-separate contaminants in ore deposits of potential economic value. Techniques for characterization and separation of ore materials frequently are dependent on the magnetic properties of the constituent minerals. An experimental program was initiated to explore the effects of temperature and of simple mechanical and thermal treatments on the static magnetic properties of several ore-grade natural chromites. Studies of the temperature dependence of the magnetic properties showed that the natural chromites, which are dilute in the magnetic ions Fe and Cr, order magnetically only at cryogenic temperatures. However, mechanical treatment in the form of crushing produces a magnetic component that is ordered at room temperature and that is of sufficient strength to alter magnetic-separation characteristics. The additional magnetic component apparently is associated with surface structures which develop during crushing and disappear after heating to above about 500°C. Preliminary studies indicate that this surface structure enhances the susceptibility of the chromite grain surfaces to gas reactions at moderate temperatures.

One of the most important problems facing the steel industry at the present time is that of maintaining at a minimum the sulphur content of many grades of steel where sulphur is known to have harmful effects On both quality and yield. The present outlook in this struggle to reduce the amount of sulphur in steel is rather gloomy since the sulphur content of the raw materials available in the United States is gradually rising, with little relief in sight. A flow sheet of sulphur in the steel process is shown in Fig I. The values used here were obtained by averaging coke oven and blast furnace data at No. 5 furnace in Cleveland and are considered typical for high top pressure practice. The sulphur evolved in the blast furnace top gas was obtained by difference and since the amount is relatively small, little significance should be attached to this particular value. From Fig I it is apparent, however, that coals used in the production of metallurgical coke represent by far the largest single source of sulphur in steel-making. As an indication of the decrease in quality of these coals as regards sulphur content the weighed average annual sulphur analysis of the coals supplied to two different steel plants, since 1925, is plotted in Fig 2} The sharp rise since 1940 is strikingly apparent. Another indication of this trend is found in estimates of coking coal reserves. Thus in the case of Pittsburgh seam coals available in Allegheny, Fayette, Greene, Washington, and Westmoreland Counties in Pa. as of Jan. 1937 only 25 pct of the coal reserves would contain less than 1.50 pct sulphur after washing.2.3 Many of these lower sulphur reserves have been seriously depleted in recent years because of accelerated war demands. still another demonstration of the increasing sulphur content of coals on a country-wide basis is found in a report by the Bureau of Mines4 which shows a steady increase in the sulphur content of coke made in the United States. It should be noted that this increase continues in spite of the wider use of coal washing in recent years. Sulphur occurs in coal in three forms, pyritic (FeS2), organic sulphur, and a small amount of sulphate sulphur (CaS04). The sulphur is subsequently found in the coke in combination with carbonaceous material of is composition and as calcium and iron sulphides' In considering the general problem of sulphur elimination, the Republic Steel Corp. was interested in determining which, if either, of the two major forms of sulphur in coal contributes the greater portion of sulphur to the coke. Since the ratio of pyritic to organic sulphur varies widely in different coals, it was thought that if it could be shown definitely that the major part of the sulphur occurring in coke originates from one of the two ""jar forms of sulphur in the coal, it would then be possible to select with confidence coal which, although high .in total sulphur, would yield coke of fairly low sulphur content. The values used here were obtained by averaging coke oven and blast furnace data at No. 5 furnace in Cleveland and are considered typical for high top pressure practice. The sulphur evolved in the blast furnace top gas was obtained by difference and since the amount is relatively small, little significance should be attached to this particular value. From Fig I it is apparent, however, that coals used in the production of metallurgical coke represent by far the largest single source of sulphur in steel-making. As an indication of the decrease in quality of these coals as regards sulphur content the weighed average annual sulphur analysis of the coals supplied to two different steel plants, since 1925, is plotted in Fig 2} The sharp rise since 1940 is strikingly apparent. Another indication of this trend is found in estimates of coking coal reserves. Thus in the case of Pittsburgh seam coals available in Allegheny, Fayette, Greene, Washington, and Westmoreland Counties in Pa. as of Jan. 1937 only 25 pct of the coal reserves would contain less than 1.50 pct sulphur after washing.2.3 Many of these lower sulphur reserves have been seriously depleted in recent years because of accelerated war demands. still another demonstration of the increasing sulphur content of coals on a country-wide basis is found in a report by the Bureau of Mines4 which shows a steady increase in the sulphur content of coke made in the United States. It should be noted that this increase continues in spite of the wider use of coal washing in recent years. Sulphur occurs in coal in three forms, pyritic (FeS2), organic sulphur, and a small amount of sulphate sulphur (CaS04). The sulphur is subsequently found in the coke in combination with carbonaceous material of is composition and as calcium and iron sulphides' In considering the general problem of sulphur elimination, the Republic Steel Corp. was interested in determining which, if either, of the two major forms of sulphur in coal contributes the greater portion of sulphur to the coke. Since the ratio of pyritic to organic sulphur varies widely in different coals, it was thought that if it could be shown definitely that the major part of the sulphur occurring in coke originates from one of the two ""jar forms of sulphur in the coal, it would then be possible to select with confidence coal which, although high .in total sulphur, would yield coke of fairly low sulphur content. DURING the past 25 years, mining engineers have seen the development of a multitude of specialized engineering curricula in the mineral industry field. Bachelor degrees are now !ranted in the fields of mineral dressing petroleum engineering, geological engineering, fuel technology, and many others. These fields were all, previously considered to be part of a mining enginieer's work and elementary phases of them were included in mining engineering curricula. Their emergence has left some mining engineers with the fear that nothing will he left for a purely mining engineer to teach, or that mining engineering graduates will be unable to complete in any of these fields with the more specialized students and thus will have neatly restricted employment opportunies. A secondary reaction has been that if students who began to say that the pining engineering curriculum taught everything but mining, since so many of :he subjects that had always been udedAuded in the mining engineering curriculum now were fields in their own right.

Knowledge of the diffusivity of carbon in the low temperature form of iron (alpha iron existing below 910°C) is at the moment of considerable interest in the study of the decomposition of austenite and martensite, the elastic after-effect,123 the magnetic after-effect4 and the decarburization of steel below 910°C. Information on the solubility of carbon in iron, and to a lesser extent its diffusion, is also important in consideration of such phenomena as blue-brittleness, temper-brittleness, "magnetic" aging, quench-aging, strain-aging, and possibly the yield point. In order to obtain more information on these subjects more fundamental knowledge is necessary. It is the purpose of this work to present data on the diffusion and solubility of carbon in the alpha iron. The high temperature form of iron (gamma; face-centered cubic) existing above 910°C is capable of dissolving relatively large amounts of carbon, up to 1.7 pet at 1130°C, while the low temperature form (alpha, body-centered cubic) existing below 910° dissolves only a limited maximum amount of less than 0.02 pet carbon at 725°C, according to data obtained here. Since the solubility of carbon in the face-centered or gamma iron is large, relatively speaking, no great analytical difficulties have been encountered in the determination of the solubility lines5 or of the diffusion of carbon.0 The limited solubility of carbon in alpha iron offers difficulties because experimental procedures and analytical methods for low carbon contents below say 0.01 pet have to be more refined than techniques used for work with gamma iron. Because of the difficulties of applying conventional methods to the determination of the diffusion of carbon in alpha iron, virtually no work has been done on this subject. However, by proper refinement of the analytical method for small amounts of carbon, the determination of the diffusion coefficient can be made readily using modified procedures. The solubility of carbon in alpha iron has been determined over a temperature range by various investigators, but the agreement among them is poor. The present investigation establishes the limits quite accurately. Information of this kind is useful in establishing the correctness of equilibrium diagrams but, more significantly, such information on maximum solubilities, especially when extended to alloyed ferrites, should be extremely important in the study of aging and related phenomena. Literature The literature existing on the diffusion, in particular, and on the solubility of carbon in alpha iron is not extensive. The data which exist are not of a high order of accuracy, much of them being in the realm of conjecture. THE DIFFUSION OF CARBON IN ALPHA IRON Whiteley7 made the qualitative ob- servation, using metallographic techniques, that the rate of diffusion of carbon at the A1 (725°C) point was very rapid and that its diffusion was still rapid at 550°C. Snoek,4 studying the magnetic aftereffect in high purity iron, arrived at the conclusion that the after-effect could be explained by the presence of small amounts of carbon diffusing under the influence of magnetostrictive strain (lattice distortion due to magnetic interaction). In later work, Snoek8 made an estimate of the ratio of carbon diffusion in alpha to its diffusion in gamma iron, and concluded that for a temperature of 910°C the ratio of Da/D? was 2600. Polder,9 basing his calculations of D on relaxation phenomena in the elastic after-effect, estimated that Da is about 1/3 of D? at 910°C (1183°K) and is about 1/12 of Dy at 727°C (1000°K). Polder's equation for the diffusion of carbon in alpha iron was calculated to be 18000 D = 5.2 X 10-4 e-RT cm2 per sec Ham10 obtained data for the diffusion and solid solubility of carbon in alpha iron at two temperatures by using one technique similar to that employed in this study. He found a D of 8.0 X 10-7 cm2 per sec at 702°C and of 2.7 X 10-7 at 648°C. THE SOLUBILITY OF CARBON IN ALPHA IRON Although pearlite is absent in steels containing 0.06 pet,11 0.05 pet,12 or 0.045 pet C,13 it appears that the carbon in these steels cannot be in solution in ferrite. The solubility of carbon at the A1 (725°C) point was first determined by Scott14 on the basis of cooling curves, and was found to be between 0.03 and 0.04 pet C.
