The paper presents research on the influence of the goaf methane inflow on a fire. The problem was investigated by a computer simulation of a fire developing in a goaf. A relevant mathematical model of the fire was selected, which considered both burning of coal and methane. The combustion process is very sensitive on the oxygen and methane concentrations, which was indicated on graphs of the fire temperature evolution. Examples of computer simulation for various location of the fire were considerd. Analysys of results confirms the influence of the content of the goaf methane on development of fires.

There are various intermetallic compounds in the Zn-Fe system. We synthesized them at about 673K. A specimen was examined chemically and X-ray diffraction was applied to ensure the formation of intermetallic compounds. Material containing two phases was placed in a Knudsen type effusion cell and the mass spectrum studied to evaluate the vapor pressure of zinc. The thermodynamic properties of intermetallics was then evaluated through measured intensity.

In cooperation with Cyprus Twentymile Coal Co., researchers from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSI-I), Spokane Research Laboratory, conducted a study at the Foidel Creek Mine, an underground coal mine near Oak Creek, CO, to evaluate the stability of underground working conditions as a longwall advanced through a series of backfilled cross-panel entries. Instruments installed in the cross-panel entry pillars, backfill, longwall panel, and adjacent headgate entry were continuously monitored by a computerized data acquisition system as the longwall approached and advanced through the backfilled section of the panel. Data collected from these instruments were analyzed to determine the magnitude and direction of the secondary principal stress changes ahead of the longwall face, deformation and closure of the headgate entry, and stability of the cross-panel entry pillars and backfill. A three-dimensional, boundary element model was calibrated to accurately predict mining-induced stress changes and the distance they occurred ahead of the longwall face. As the longwall advanced through the hackfillcd entries, most of the mining-induced load was supported by the cross-panel entry pillars. The backlill provided stability for the root and Moor of the in-panel entries and also confined the entry pillars significantly improving their load-carrying capacity. Comprehensive information derived from backfill material property tests, instrument data, underground observations, and numeric modeling results document the safety and stability of the 8-Right minethrough and should provide beneficial case study information fur other longwall backfilling applications in the future.

More and more researches and applications of organic chelating agents as depressors or activators are carried out in the course of research and application of modern flotation. The paper puts forward the necessary condition of organic chelating agents as depressors or activators by analyzing the chelating chemical performance of organic chelating agents with metal ions and the stability of chelates formed by them; at the same time, puts forward four sufficient conditions of organic chelating agents as depressors or activators according to different hydrophilic capability of the chelates and different performance of depression and activation of organic chelating agents for minerals. Namely, the ?1+1/4? necessary and sufficient conditions of organic chelating agents as depressors or activators are put forward.

Vibration transmitted to the upper limb by the chronic use of hand tools can result in cold-induced vasospasms finger blanching and cyanosis, similar to that seen with Raynaud’s phenomenon (4). These vasospasms, commonly referred to as vibration white finger (VWF), are in part the result of an increased sensitivity of peripheral arteries to the vasoconstricting effects of norepinephrine (e.g., (1-3)). However, alterations in vasodilating factors could also contribute to vasospasms. The goal of these studies was to determine if exposure to a single bout of vibration alters concentrations of the vasodilator, nitric oxide (NO), in a rat tail model of vibration. To determine if vibration exposure alters NO, we exposed animals to a single bout of vibration and measured concentrations of the synthetic enzymes, nitric oxide synthetase (NOS)-1 and NOS-3 in the ventral tail artery. We also directly assessed arterial concentrations of NO using a nitrate/nitrite assay. Methods General apparatus. Animals were placed in Broome-style restrainers, and their tail was secured to a vibrating or stable platform. Rats were exposed to a single 4 h bout of tail vibration (125 Hz, acceleration of 49 m/sec2 r.m.s.) or restraint control. Animals were euthanized with an overdose of pentobarbital (100 mg/kg) and the ventral tail artery was dissected and frozen. Experiment 1: Male Sprague Dawley rats (6 weeks old, n = 32) were used for all exposures. All animals were maintained in AAALAC accredited facilities, and all procedures were approved by the NIOSH Animal Care and Use Committee, and were in compliance with the CDC Regulations for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals. Animals were euthanized 1 or 24 h after the completion of the exposure. Western analyses were performed on total proteins (80 µg/lane) isolated from the C16-18 artery segments. Band densities were detected by chemiluminescence and quantified using Scion Image, and analyzed using 2-way ANOVAs. Experiment 2. Nitrate/nitrite concentrations.. Male Sprague Dawley rats (n = 24, 6 weeks of age) were maintained and exposed as described above. All animals were euthanized 24 h after the exposure and the ventral artery was collected. Nitrate/nitrite concentrations were measured in ventral artery tissue homogenates using the nitrate/nitrite colormetric Assay Kit (Caymen). Results Analyses of band densities revealed that there was an effect of time (F(1, 17) = 6.03, p < 0.03) on NOS-1 protein in arteries exposed to vibration, with NOS levels being lower in arteries collected 24 h after the exposure than arteries collected 1 h after the exposure. Although NOS-1 proteins concentrations were slightly lower in control arteries collected 24 h after an exposure than arteries collected 1 h after exposure, post-hoc contrasts indicated they were not significantly different than 1 h controls. In contrast, NOS-1 band densities from arteries collected 24 h after the exposure were lower than those collected 1 h after the exposure (p < 0.01; Figure 1). NOS-3

They are marked by long (500-1000 km) volcanic belts which become younger towards the Pacific up the Latest Jurassic-Neocomi- an (2) to Late Cretaceous (3) and Pale- Gene (4).

A significant technological development is discussed for the processing of certain problem power plant flyashes which contain a high water soluble mineral content and which are known to yield inferior flyash based brick. This development is based on the addition of hydrochloric acid to the flyash-bottom ash-sodium silicate blends used for the production of flyash based structures. Favorable changes are evident in (1) sodium silicate consumption, where often approximately one-half of the amount used for making brick from normal flyash is required; (2) processing costs; and (3) strength and appearance of the resulting freshly formed green and fired structural products. In some high cost instances-(above the cost of 30 dollars or less per thousand brick estimated for normal flyashes) hydrochloric acid additions can replace or reduce other costly additives required with problem flyashes to result in a savings of as much as nine dollars per thousand brick. These developments offer promising possibilities for utilizing problem flyashes as well as flyashes which may come into contact with water soluble, sulfur as a result of the eventual application of certain experimental air pollution control processes.

"Le gisement Isle-Dieu est situé sur le flanc sud de l'anticlinal de Galinée. La stratigraphie locale comprend, de bas en haut, la rhyolite du Groupe du Lac Watson surmontée par le basalte du Groupe de Wabassee. Un horizon repère, siliceux et sulfure, d'origine sédimentaire, appelé ""Tuffite Clef', est présent au sommet du Groupe du Lac Watson et pend à 45° vers le sud.Le gisement Isle-Dieu est constitué par une lentille qui recoupe, en partie, la ""Tuffite Clef"". Elle est séparée en deux trorçons par un dyke de tonalite. Les données obtenues à partir des forages effectues à travers la rhyolite sous-jacente permettent de définir les zonations chimiques et pétrographiques de la cheminée d’altération.Ces transformation minéralogiques et chimiques sont caractérisées par un enrichissement en MgO, Fe2O3, MnO et un appauvrissement en CaO, SiO2 et Na2O. La zonation spatiale de ces altérations permet de mettre en évidence la géométrie et l'extension des conduits hydrothermaux. L'épaisseur maximale des sulfures massifs au sein de la lentille est en étroite relation avec l’importance des zones d'altération. Les patrons de variations chimiques dénotent une orientation préférentielle WNW des conduits hydrothermaux. Les parties les plus altérées et les plus déformées présentent localement de fortes variations positives en Zr, Nb, et terres-rares; ces concentrations sont vraisemblablement imputables a /' enrichissement résultant de la diminution du volume lors de l'altération.L'étude pétrographique montre que la porosité et la perméabilité du milieu ont joué un rôle important dans la circulation des fluides car les roches de la cheminée présentent des phénomènes de dévitrification, de bréchification et de microfracturation très prononces. La nature magnésienne de certaines chlorites et la perméabilité accrue du milieu semblent en accord avec le modelé propose par Roberts et Reardon, ( 1978 )"

At Kalgoorlie Consolidated Gold MineÆs (KCGMÆs) Fimiston Operations, located on the periphery of Kalgoorlie Boulder in Western Australia, roughly 7.5 million tonnes of rock are broken each month for the extraction of gold. With the close proximity of neighbours to the mining operations in the Chaffers Cut Back, special blasting techniques and tools were employed by KCGM to manage the blast induced vibrations and noise in this area. The i-konTM initiation system coupled with OricaÆs complementary modelling and analysis tools offered the complete blast management package. With these tools KCGM management and Orica Mining Services commenced an investigation into the benefits of electronic initiation. Prior to the commencement of electronic blasting, initial modelling was conducted to examine the vibration time waveforms and their frequency content, as these were expected to have an impact on vibration interaction with structures such as large buildings and urban dwellings. This work looked at results measured for a previous conventionally (pyrotechnic) initiated blast in the area and compared it to the results obtained when the blast was modelled with electronic initiation and faster timings. The predicted peak particle velocity (PPV) and structural vibration factor (SVF) were calculated. From the results it was concluded that the investigation into using i-konTM electronic initiation system and SHOTPlus«-i blast design software had some real potential to improve blast vibration management on the cut back. The use of the electronic initiation system and complementary software allows intricate timing designs to be accurately placed into blasts. The system has a number of working modes that allow either the precise design timings to be logged automatically into each detonator or to be manually logged where a variation from the design exists. Where such variations from the design occur, the electronic system permits the actual timings used to be uploaded back into the design file. This allows both design and real actual timings to be stored for future analysis or reference.

Introduction The Conda Partnership&apos;s Dry Valley phosphate mine is a thinly bedded, multiple seam open-pit mining operation where selective mining techniques are used to recover phosphatic shales. The mining methods used are truck/shovel and scraper/dozer operations. Ore is shipped 32 km (20 miles) by rail to a beneficiation facility. The ore is upgraded by washing and calcining. The mine and beneficiation complexes are owned by the Conda partnership. It is a joint venture between Beker Industries Corp., of Greenwich, CT, and Western Co-Operative Fertilizers (US) Inc., of Alberta, Canada. The Partnership operates as a separate entity of the two partners. The Dry Valley mine is located 48 km (30 miles) northeast of Soda Springs in Caribou County in southeastern Idaho. The mine is situated on the Caribou National Forest. Mining operations take place between 2 and 2.4 km (6400 and 7900 ft) in elevation. It is accessible partly by 32 km (20 miles) of paved roads and 16 km (10 miles) of dirt roads. The winters are long and severe, and the summers are short and mild. This article describes the history, geology, exploration, mining, and reclamation that makes this mine Idaho&apos;s largest producing mine and the western US&apos; leading phosphate producer. History and production In the mid-1950s, Western Fertilizers of Salt Lake City, UT, drove an exploratory drift in Maybe Canyon. A large bulk sample of phosphatic shales was analyzed for phosphate content and processing characteristics. No large scale mining or processing operations were undertaken. In the late 1950s, the Dry Valley property was sold to Central Farmers of Chicago, IL. No major operations took place. In 1964, Central Farmers sold the property to El Paso Products Co. of Odessa, TX. El Paso Products supervised the mining operations of Wells Cargo Mining Co. from 1965 through 1967. During this time, El Paso Products built a beneficiation facility and a fertilizer complex in Conda. A 32-km (20-mile) railroad was also constructed from the mine to this facility. From 1968 through 1972, the mine was shut down due to a depressed fertilizer market. In 1972, El Paso products sold its ore reserves, beneficiation plant, and fertilizer complex to Beker Industries Corp. In 1979, Beker Industries sold 50% of its ore reserves and 50% of its beneficiation plant to Western Co-Operative Fertilizers (US) Inc., of Alberta Canada, forming the Conda Partnership. It has operated the mine and beneficiation plant since January 1979. From the mid-1950s to the mid-1960s, no substantial production took place. From 1965 to 1967, El Paso Products stripped 3 Mm3 (4 million cu yd) and mined 2.3 Mt (2.5 million st). From 1972 through 1983, 50 Mm3 (66 million cu yd) were stripped and 18 Mt (20 mil¬lion st) were mined. Geology The Wells Formation forms high ridges and hillsides in the Dry Valley area. It is best exposed along the west face of Dry Ridge. It forms the imposing wall on the east side of Dry Valley. The formation is divided into two members. The lower member, about 213 m (700 ft) thick, is dominantly thin to medium-bedded limestone and silty limestone. It contains nodules and stringers of chert and minor sandstone. The upper member is composed principally of thick-bedded to massive cross-bedded, light-gray to orange-yellow, fine grained sandstone. There is some interbedded brown to light-gray limestone. This member varies from 369 to 457 m (1300 to 1500 ft). Recent investigations indicate that the upper Wells is of Permian age. Under some conditions, the Wells may be water-bearing. Otherwise, it has no apparent economic significance. Grandeur Member (Park City Formation) Overlying the Wells Formation is a distinctive light-gray to white dolomitic fossiliferous limestone. This unit has been identified by the US Geological Survey (USGS) as the Grandeur Tongue Member of the Park City Formation. This member is sometimes absent due to its contact with the Meade Peak Member of the Phosphoria Formation. It is easily detectable by its color, hardness, and fetid odor. Phosphoria Formation The Phosphoria Formation of Permian age was named from Phosphoria Gulch, Bear Lake County. The formation has been studied extensively and developed for its economically valuable phosphate reserves.

This chapter deals with those sands employed by foundries for the manufacture of cores and molds used in the casting of such common metals as steel, gray iron, ductile iron, aluminum-based alloys, and copper-based alloys. Most metal is cast in "green sand" molds in which the sand mixture, consisting primarily of silica, clay, and water, forms a plastic material. This plastic material is rammed around a pattern in a split box called a flask, then the box is separated, the pattern is withdrawn, and the metal is poured. These green sand molds are broken apart when the metal has solidified. The sand is then remixed and a new mold made for the next casting. To a lesser extent silica sand is mixed with resins or oils and, after forming, the mixture is hardened by either heat or chemical reaction. In any case, the foundry mold or core is used just once before being broken up and remixed for manufacturing another core or mold. By far the greatest consumption in the foundry is of those types of sand high in silica, low in clay (under 0.5%), and occurring in numerous locations thoughout the United States. Consumption End Uses Foundry sands fall into four distinct categories: silica sand, lake sand, bank sand, and natural molding sand. Silica sand is a general term used to describe washed, graded, dried, and cooled clay-free sands which are found in many parts of the United States. They generally contain 90 to 100% silica but vary greatly in chemical analysis and grain structure. Lake sand is the sand dredged from Lake Michigan or dug from the dunes bordering that lake. Bank sand is composed primarily of silica grain but containing up to 5% clay. It is shipped in both the damp and dry state but the normal processing of bank sand consists only of drying and scalping. Occasionally two different grades of bank sand are blended prior to or during loading. Natural molding sand is a term used to describe a sand containing sufficient clay as mined to be suitable for molding purposes. Clay content may vary from 10 to 24% with the balance of the material consisting primarily of silica sand. These sands range in fineness from one peaked on the 20 mesh to one which contains more than 50% of the particles passing the 270 mesh. Lake sands are relatively coarse and are used in great quantities for the production of automotive castings. Bank sands and natural molding sands are gradually phasing out as the production of castings becomes more a science and less an art. The vast majority of foundry sands used today are those known as the silica sands and lake sands. Foundry sands are used in two basic ways. The majority are used in the green or uncured state with the balance used in the cured or set state. Green sand is grain bonded with clay and contains varying amounts of water to plasticize the clay in order to bond the grains together. Green sand is either naturally bonded or "synthetic" sand. The naturally bonded molding sands are generally found in the Hudson River Valley of New York State, Cumberland County in New Jersey, and in Tennessee and Mississippi. Synthetic sand is molding sand compounded in the individual foundry. It is made up primarily of graded silica sand, western or southern bentonite, water, and carbonaceous and/or cellulosic materials. Green sand is used primarily in making molds. The use of naturally bonded green sand has been declining for many years, primarily because naturally bonded sands are more difficult for the foundryman to find and control. Weir Minerals ? Linatex has developed a new approach to the dewatering of fine solids, particularly mine and process plant tailings and wastes. The Weir process, patented in 2009, uses standard process equipment in a standard flow sheet, but applies this approach to materials previously thought to be too fine to be dewatered with this type of equipment. The process can be applied to a wide range of materials, making lower moisture products that can be re-used elsewhere or sent to disposal. It has already been tested successfully on a small scale in Australia on coal fines, zinc mine tailings, red mud, iron ore tails, and copper/gold tailings. The principal factors affecting the solids recovery have been established as: 1. The % solids in the slurry feed to the process ? a higher % solids provides a higher recovery. 2. The particle size of the feed solids ? coarser feeds provide higher recoveries. The key factors affecting the % solids in the dewatered product have been determined to be: 1. The particle size of the dewatered product - coarser materials produce a higher % solids in the dewatered product. 2. The height of the discharge weir on the dewatering screen - a higher discharge weir on the dewatering screen also yields a higher % solids. 3. The angle of the dewatering screen. Setting the screen horizontal increases the travel rate, reduces the bed depth and reduces the % solids in the dewatered product. Back-sloping the screen up to 5° reduces the travel rate and increases the % solids in product. Eight plants ranging in size from 3 t/h to 40 t/h have been sold to a range of customers in China, for coal and iron ore tailings treatment. Australia has one plant, a small unit rated at 30 t/h of sand fines, and has recently completed test work on iron ore tailings for a dewatering plant rated at 135 t/h. Additional tests are under way with clients around Australia, to demonstrate the capabilities of this process on specific applications and to provide confirmation that materials can be processed successfully, before moving on to larger scale tests or full size plants. The advantages of the Weir process include - lower moisture in products, uses proven equipment, lower capital and operating costs, lower maintenance costs, reduced power consumption, compact footprint, can be used in parallel or in series with existing equipment, modular design to facilitate redundancy or expansion, efficient water recovery and simpler water management, reduced cement in backfill mixes, smaller tailings disposal footprint, reduced earthworks requirements, much lower seepage losses, more stable tailings mass, progressive site rehabilitation, reduced impact on local wildlife, reduced risk of dam wall failure, and reduced environmental monitoring and compliance costs.

The thermodynamic activity of MnO was measured in MnO-CaO-MgO-SiO2slags that are typically encountered in the production of manganese containing stainless steels. Gas equilibration-quenching technique was employed in measuring the activities. Activity of Mn in Pt-Mn alloys were redetermined at 1600°C which reconfirmed earlier results of strong negative deviations. MnO activities were then measured by equilibrating slags of various compositions based on a statistical experimental design procedure with Pt-Mn alloys under controlled partial pressure of oxygen in MnO saturated platinum crucibles at 1600°C. Activities of MnO were found to increase with increasing concentration of MnO, basicity and CaO to MgO ratio. Two multi-coefficient repression models were developed to predict the activities and activity coefficients of MnO in slags at 1600°C. Keywords: activity, MnO, slag.

Tins paper proposes two units (believed to be new) for designating, respectively, capacity and efficiency for primary and intermediate crushers. CAPACITY Operators know that the tonnage of rock that can be put through a particular crusher in a give time depends primarily upon the crusher setting (open setting for jaw and primary gyratory types; closed setting for cones and rolls), and secondarily on the lithological character of the feed, its maximum size, the amount of fines that it carries, its moisture content, and the method of feeding. The proposed capacity formula states a relationship between all of these factors in one empirical equation, as follows: TR = TR80KK&apos;K" [I] in which Ts, called "reduction tons per hour" is the new capacity unit; T = tons of feed per hour requiring crushing; R80 = "80-per cent reduction ratio"; and K, K&apos;, and K" are constants that approximate quantitatively lithological character, moisture content and method of feeding, respectively. T is the hourly weight of material in the feed that is coarser than the coarsest discharge of the crusher. (For marked departures from the normal specific gravity range - 2.5 to 2.7 - T should. be adjusted to corresponding volumes.) In the crushers under consideration, discharge from the crushing zone is limited by the minimum dimension of a particle. Passage of the particle through a square-mesh screen is limited by its intermediate dimension. Sheppard1 has shown that the ratio of maximum: intermediate: minimum average dimensions of broken rock fragments may be taken as about 1.5 : 1 : 0.6 for nonslabby rocks such as are normally crushed, while for slabby rocks, such as thin-bedded sedimentaries, foliated schists and gneisses, and the blocky metamorphics, the ratio is of the average order I.3:I:0.3, with the possibility of an even smaller relative value for the thickness. Gaudin2 finds the corresponding ratio for 150 + 200-mesh pyrite to be 1.4: 1 : 0.6. The hourly tonnage of crusher-plant feed, therefore, should be diminished by the amount thereof that would pass a square-mesh screen of which the aperture is S times the crusher setting, where S is a shape factor with the value 1.7 for rocks that break exceptionally cubic; 2 for ores and rocks that exhibit no appreciable tendency to slabbiness; and 2.5 to 3, or, in exceptional cases, even larger, when the tendency to slabbiness is marked. R80 is the quotient of the theoretical square-mesh aperture that would pass 80 per cent of the feed, divided by the aperture that would pass 80 per cent of the product. Sheppard&apos; has shown that the ratio of maximum: intermediate: minimum average dimensions of broken rock fragments may be taken as about I.5: I: 0.6 for nonslabby rocks such as are normally crushed, while for slabby rocks, such as thin-bedded sedimentaries, foliated schists and gneisses, and the blocky metamorphics, the ratio is of the average order I.3:I:0.3, with the possibility of an even smaller relative value for the thickness. Gaudin2 finds the corresponding ratio for -150 + 200-mesh pyrite to be I.4: I : 0.6. The hourly tonnage of crusher-plant feed, therefore, should be diminished by the amount thereof that would pass a square-mesh screen of which the aperture is S times the crusher setting, where S is a shape factor with the value I.7 for rocks that break exceptionally cubic; 2 for ores and rocks that exhibit no appreciable tendency to slabbiness; and 2.5 to 3, or, in exceptional cases, even larger, when the tendency to slabbiness is marked. R80 is the quotient of the theoretical square-mesh aperture that would pass 8o per cent of the feed, divided by the aperture that would pass S0 per cent of the product. It is best determined from screen tests.

"Due diligence" is a review or audit of a facility or business to assess and quantify risks and operating status before an acquisition. Due diligence findings can be used to negotiate the price, general terms, and indemnification provisions in the purchase and sales agreement. In addition to assessing out- standing liabilities, necessary capital improvements, and the adequacy of operating budgets, due diligence should include "nontechnical" considerations, such as local community acceptance and relations, and the effect on the company&apos;s public image and operations. This paper will discuss how these considerations can be addressed in the due diligence process and factored into the transaction. Also, innovative means for risk reduction and risk transfer, during and after the transaction, will be discussed.

A paper by Rose1 has called attention to some of the problems of wetting-liquid relative permeability measurement. The premises and conclusions set forth by Rose, namely the applicability of the Hassler scheme of measurement, will be accepted. In addition, it will be concluded that certain electrical analog circuits can be used as a pattern for consideration of possible hydraulic systems of measurements. NEW SCHEME OF MEASUREMENT The object of this note is to propose a new scheme of wetting liquid relative permeability measurement. It is significantly different from those heretofore described, nonetheless it is based on Hassler concepts. The scheme is illustrated in Fig. 1 in terms of the corresponding electric circuit analog. It may be designated descriptively as the "comparison" method of wetting-liquid relative permeability measurement. In this circuit, R, represents the resistance of the core sample which is being studied for relative permeability characteristics, R represents a "standard" resistance, R represents the combined series resistance of the barrier pads, R R2 represent the combined series resistance of barrier pads in the manometer circuit, C, C represent the capacitance of the manometers, E is a constant voltage source, S is the switch or stopcock. This paper describes a joint cooperative project between the CANMET Cape Breton Coal Research Laboratory and the Cape Breton Development Corporation to conduct a trial of split set cable slings for remedial support in longwall gateroads. Slings were installed in two test sections of the 2 West panel, Phalen Mine which exhibited deformation and the potential for excessive deterioration when subjected to the front abutment of the wallface. Roadway support behaviour was monitored at the trial sites, including lengths of roadway with the standard support of steel sets without remedial support. Observations were made on convergence, loading of the steel supports, loading of the slings, and wallface performance. Comparisons are made of the results obtained from the areas with remedial support to that without, which demonstrates that the slings provided effective remedial support limiting further deterioration of the roof. Improved face end conditions have contributed to increases in safety and productivity of the longwall panel.
