Approximately 2,000 persons are killed annually in the coal mines of the United States. There is no question that this number is at least double and probably treble what it should be and by all means the least excusable of the fatalities are those caused by explosions and fires. Fatalities from explo- sions and fires in coal mines are almost invariably caused by carelessness or negligence. Table 1 indicates that the fiscal year ending June 30, 1931, ras by no means a satisfactory one as regaris either the number of explosions or the number of persons killed by them. This tabulation lists all ignitions to which the attention of the personnel of the safety division was called and in- cludes not only major disasters, but also explosions in which fewer than five were killed, as well as several explosions from which no fatalities resulted. It will be noticed that last year there were 26 explosions in mines in 10 States of the United States, resulting in 217 deaths. In the previous year there were 34 explosions with a death list of 199, and in the year before there were 38 explosions with a death list of 139. Hence, the past fiscal year had distinctly a poorer record of fatalities from mine explosions than either of the two previous years. Of the 26 explosions in the past fiscal year, Pennsylvania had 7, West Virginic 4, New Mexico and Ohio 3 each, Alabama, Oklahoma and Washington 2 each, and California, Illinois and Indiana 1 each; the one in California was in a tunnel being driven for water purposes but giving off explosive gas (methane). In fatalities Ohio had the worst record with 38, Oklahoma came next with 45, then Indiane with 38, and Pennsylvania with 23; although Alabama had 2 ignitions and Washington 1, they caused no fatalities. Utch, Colorado, and Kentucky had no explosions reported by the safety division of the Bureau of Mines during the past fiscal year, but were on the list for the previous year, though in the case of Colorado there were no fatalities. On the other hand, Indiana and New Mexico, neither of rhich was charged with an explosion in the two previous years, were on the list for the past fiscal year; New Mexico had the bad record of three explosions, though fortunately with but a total of eight fatalities. Ohio reported 3 explosions to the safety division of the Bureau of Mines in the past fiscal year, 2 in the pre- vious year, and 3 in the year before that, or 8 in the past three fiscal years with 92 fatalities; all of these eight explosions were in open-light mines.

There exists a wide array of industrial by-products that can be shown to produce beneficial responses in the soil/plant environment. These materials range from clean coal technology residues produced in the generation of electric power, particularly those high in gypsum, to mineral 'fines' produced by the aggregates and crushed stone industries. A number of these materials will be examined in relation to potential nutritional interactions in soils and crops with emphasis on trace elements. The significance of utilizing these materials in agriculture as a component of sustainable agricultural systems will be discussed.

Australian wheat belt agriculture is causing a decline of its natural resource base. The major problem, salinity, arises from a small reduction in water consumption by agricultural crops compared to what prevailed under the prior native vegetation. This causes groundwater accumulation which, in the low relief landscapes of the wheat belt, is leading to extensive surface saturation in low landscape positions and dramatic, destructive change in the hydrological behaviour and habitat of streams and rivers. The ability of agriculture to invest in salinity control is severely limited by its long-term decline in its terms of trade. Extensive planting of perennial vegetation has the potential to increase water use and arrest the salinisation process. If these perennials were also commercially attractive, the cost of salinity treatment could be minimised. Given the difficult commercial position of food commodities, it is logical to develop ænon-foodÆ perennial crops, in particular woody crops suitable for industrial products. This paper looks at the example of Sweden, where there has been a generation of investment in developing forest harvest residue recovery, and short cycle woody crops for bioenergy, but with only limited success. In contrast, secondary residues (processing wastes) from forestry industry are readily saleable for low value uses like bioenergy. This suggests that the model woody crop must have a higher value fraction to facilitate delivery and commercial use of its lower value fractions. This model is being emulated in the development of native mallee eucalypts as short cycle woody crops in Western Australia. Some $50 million has been expended on mallee development in the past decade and this has culminated in an engineering demonstration of integrated processing. The putative high value products are activated carbon and eucalyptus oil and the residue (plus waste heat) will be converted to electricity. The potential scale on which crops of this type would be required to achieve salinity control means that many more high value and residue products will have to be developed. Metallurgical charcoal appears to be a promising product option.

FOLLOWING the deformation 01 zinc monocrys-tals, sharply bent basal planes are observed near several types of inhomogeneities. Three of these in-homogeneities have characteristics which are quite regular so that they can be studied and analyzed. These are compressive kink bands, "deformation bands," and the inhomogeneities near end restraints. The present paper describes experiments in which "deformation bands" were artificially produced, and bend plane phenomena are discussed in terms of dislocation theory. Also, two new bend plane phenomena are described. The importance of bend plane phenomena in the deformation of crystals is not widely recognized. Many phenomena may be explained in a manner similar to the discussion in this paper. Jillson1 has pointed out that the "punching effect" in zinc is a bend plane phenomenon and is not caused by prismatic slip.' Bowles3 has suggested that they may be involved in diffusionless phase changes. Cahn4 has discussed the role of bend plane formation in the polygonization of zinc. Experimental Work Tensile Kink Bands: Because of the geometrical similarity between "deformation bands" and "kink bands" (compare Fig. 1 of this paper with Fig. 1 of the paper by Hess and Barrett"), the band shown in Fig. 1 of this paper will be called a "tensile kink band," and that shown by Hess and Barrett will be called a "compressive kink band." It is felt that the term "deformation band" should be reserved for banded structures in polycrystalline materials such as iron." Tensile kink bands seem to form spontaneously in aluminum crystals deformed by tensile loading.7-10 In zinc and cadmium crystals they do not form in good, carefully loaded specimens.'." However, tensile kink bands can be produced artificially in zinc crystals. The present authors did this by scratching one of the flat surfaces of triangular crystals transversely with a sharp needle. Natural tensile kink bands caused by inhomogeneities sometimes appeared in deformed crystals which were identical in appearance with the artificially produced ones. Zinc monocrystals were grown by the Bridgman method in graphite molds. Chemically pure zinc (99.999+ pct Zn) was used and the molds were sealed inside evacuated pyrex tubes during growth. The crystal cross sections were equilateral triangles with a typical base of 0.210 in. The artificial kink band shown in Fig. 1 is typical of tensile kink bands in zinc. The band lies between two bend planes which run from upper right to lower left and is inclined oppositely to the slip bands which are sharply bent at the two bend planes. The general form of the artificial tensile kink bands was independent of the scratch depth (1 to 5 mils deep) and also independent of which side was scratched. These variables did cause variations, however. Deep scratches produced more localized kink bands than light scratches. Also, if the angle between the slip plane traces and a transverse scratch varied appreciably among the three sides, then localization of the resulting kink bands also varied. Furthermore, if the slip direction lay nearly parallel to the scratched side, the band was more developed near the scratched side than at the opposite edge. Scratches produced tensile kink bands for crystal orientations from xo = 15" to x, = 75". Fig. 2 shows a scratched crystal after deformation. One triangular side lies in the plane of the photograph. The right hand tensile kink band was produced by a transverse scratch on the upper right side. The next two kink bands were the result of scratches on the front surface. The kink band at the left was caused by a scratch on the lower back side. All four bands have the same general form. A longitudinal scratch was also made on the crystal shown in Fig. 2 to determine the effect of a scratch on the critical shear stress. The critical shear stress of the scratched region was 33.9 g per sq mm compared to 24.4 g per sq mm for the un-scratched region above it. Fig. 3 shows Laue patterns of the crystal shown in Fig. 2. Fig. 3a shows the pattern of the undeformed crystal. The orientation was x, = 21°, A, = 31". After deformation, Fig. 3b was made of the homogeneously deformed portion of the crystal. The spots are compact but split into two halves. This region was elongated 45 pct and its orientation was x = 14", X = 20"; the sine law predicts x = 14", A = 20.5". Fig. 3c was taken near the center of the middle tensile kink band of Fig. 2. The pattern shows a range of orientations and polygonization in this region. The spread in orientation was due to the fact that the basal planes were curved (see Fig. 1) rather than flat as in the ideal case. Some may also have been the result of elastic distortions and "local curvatures." The orientation range was x = 23" to 32", A = 30" to 42". It is apparent from Fig. 3 that the material inside and outside the kink band rotated in opposite directions with respect to the tension axis during deformation. OPEN-HEARTH refractories are not merely an accessory to the furnace. They are the furnace, to all intents and purposes. The steel work of the main structure is merely an open frame which helps to support the refractories; and the regenerators, a necessary part of the furnace system, consist almost entirely of refractories. Not only do refractories constitute the essential part of the furnace, but they also carry the liquid steel all the way 'to the point where it begins to solidify. On leaving the furnace the liquid passes through a refractory runner into a refractory-lined ladle, then through a refractory nozzle closed by a refractory stopper on the end of a rod protected by refractory sleeve bricks. The liquid is sometimes sent through an additional refractory- lined tundish, a supplementary ladle, or a refractory runner for bottom pouring, until it finally enters the iron mold in which it solidifies. Even in the mold, refractory materials are sometimes used to provide a nonconducting "hot top." This series, from runner and ladle to hot top, inclusive, is often referred to collectively as the "pouring-pit refractories." REFRACTORY RAW MATERIALS The raw materials available are best classified into basic and acid types. The principal basic raw materials are magnesite, dolomite, and chrome ore. The principal acid materials are silica in various natural forms, and fireclay. Magnesite. Austria was the principal source of magnesite (MgC03) until recent years, when the Province of Quebec, in Canada, and the states of Nevada and Washington became important sources for the American steel industry. More recently these natural sources have been supplemented by the so-called "sea-water magnesite"-which is the name somewhat incorrectly given to magnesium hydroxide obtained as one of the products

Durante mucho tiempo la explotación del azufre en el interior del Perú, ha sido de manera regular dado su bajo consumo nacional y cotización en el mercado peruano. Asi, solo ciertos yacimientos ubicados en el norte de nuestro país producen y generan divisas que no sobrepasan los 6 millones de soles. En el marco de esta situación, el objetivo del siguiente estudio, pretende reactivar el consumo nacional de los yacimientos del Sur del país, -en tanto volumen e importancia comercial por medio del uso de un método de beneficio apropiado. La formación de los yacimientos del Sur, a diferencia de los de Piura y Bayovar, se da por la emanación postvolcánica de gases sulfurosos, generandoimpregnaciones de azufre en las lavas y tufos del Terciario Superior y Cuaternario. Posteriormente se produjeron fracturas en las zonas contíguas de los volcanes, formando depósitos lenticulares de extensión variable. Dichos depósitos son superficiales puesto que solo cerca de este espacio se puede mantener la oxidación del sulfuro de hidrógeno y los gases están a temperatura baja para depositar azufre. En cuanto al costo del azufre tenemos el costo de explotación, beneficio, transporte y embarque. Finalmente, se deduce que la fundición del azufre como la filtración, soliflucción pueden ser favorables en el uso de métodos de explotación menos costosos, asi como el incremento de la explotación depende de un mercado común estable y de un cálculo exacto de los costos de producción.

Competitive commercial circumstances internationally provide a prime impetus for miners to seek new technologies as a means to profitability and survival. Engineering and project management activities play a vital role in establishing, operating and developing the capital facilities used by miners. Computer based technologies are the single most important technology for maintain- ing competitiveness in engineering and project management into the future. Current applications of computers in engineering design and drafting are finding economic applications, computer-aids are more readily introduced, accepted and profitable. Computing technology is advancing very rapidly and on a broad front in hardware, software and communications. This technology advance is improving the ability of engineers and project managers to provide a high quality, responsive and low cost service which will improve in parallel with computer technology. As this technology advances, a key challenge is created for managers in selecting hardware and software, in developing people and organisations and in marketing the technology to advantage. While the future holds many exciting developments, people will still hold the key roles. While the nature of their roles may change, the final acceptance or rejection of technology will be by people, whether as users or owners, who will judge on the basis of whether their stake is improved or not.

"A search for manganese ore by core-drill exploration was carried out by the Bureau of Mines in the Philipsburg mining district in Granite County, Mont., in 1939 and 1940. This work was based on detailed studies of the manganese ore bodies of the district previously made by the Geological Survey.In 1949 further search for manganese in the district was deemed advisable. Diamond drilling was begun the following year as a joint program by the Geological Survey and the Bureau of Mines with the primary purposes of probing ore-leasing structures and extending the limits of known ore bodies. A secondary objective was to test a geologic theory based on a new conception of manganese-ore localization. The exploration targets were designated and the drilling results interpreted by the Geological Survey, and the Bureau of Mines was responsible for the drilling, sampling, and core handling. Improved drilling equipment and methods were utilized in an effort to obtain better core recoveries than resulted from the earlier drilling campaign.The Philipsburg mining district, Granite County, Mont., is 27 miles south of Drurrnnond, about 45 miles airline northwest of Butte, and 1 mile east of Philipsburg. During the course of the investigation patented lode-mining claims owned by the American Machine & Metals, Inc., the Contact Mines, Inc., and the Moorlight Mining Co. were diamond drilled.The district has been an important source of domestic manganese dioxide ore since local recognition of the mineral's importance during World War I. Peak annual output in 1918 of about 127,000 tons of manganese ore was utilized principally by the steel industry. A small but relatively steady output has persisted to the present to satisfy demands by battery manufacturers for battery-grade manganese dioxide.The known manganese deposits of the district are in sedimentary rocks of Paleozoic age. These rocks lie along a north-trending anticline traversed by a series of east-west tension veins. The east flank of the anticline terminates at a steep-dipping fault contact against a small granodiorite batholith.Replacement deposits of manganese oxides and carbonates occur locally in or closely associated with tension veins cutting calcareous rocks, or adjacent to the intrusive. Rhodochrosite has been a common accessory mineral in deposits valuable chiefly for lead, zinc, and silver. Some of the replacement deposits characteristically are irr2gular in outline, whereas others have fairly regular walls marking the limits of favorable beds."

A large percentage of Southern Appalachian coal reserves are located in seams less than 36" thick. As thicker and currently more mineable deposits are exhausted, methods of underground thin-seam extraction must be developed. Past experience with highwall mining of thin-seam coal has indicated that recovery rates tend to be lower than in conventional operations. It is suspected that this will also apply to underground thin-seam mining, regardless of proposed technology or mining method. Backfilling is one alternative for thin-seam coal mining; although backfill has been used extensively in hard rock mining its use in coal mining has been limited. The ability of backfill to provide additional ground support may enhance coal recovery by allowing for the design of undersized pillars. Backfill is capable of providing additional ground support by restricting lateral deformation of surrounding coal pillars and roof. This additional support can result in significant increases in recovery from thin-seam coal deposits. However, the overall feasibility of backfill is dependent on the in situ behavior of the fill material, the properties of the fill, the effects of the filling method on the total mining operation, and the cost of filling per extra ton of coal recovered.

THE opening session of the Institute was held at Hazle Hall, Tuesday evening, October 27th, with a large attendance of members. President Raymond called the Institute to order, and after a few introductory remarks, introduced Mr. I. Lowthian Bell, President of the Iron and Steel Institute of Great Britain, and Honorary Member of the American Institute of Mining Engineers. Mr. Bell was received with great applause, and made his acknowledgments in a brief speech, of which the following is the substance: He desired to thank the Institute personally for the honor conferred upon him in his election to membership, and also for the invitation extended last year to the body of which he was President. The difficulty felt by many members of the Iron and Steel Institute, of leaving for a long journey the works of which they had charge, aggravated by special industrial troubles at the time of the invitation, had obliged them to conclude that it could not then be accepted in a fitting manner. The iron manufacture of this country is a subject of great interest to Englishmen, who look with pride upon the achievements on this side the water of the descendants of a common ancestry. His own reception in this country had far surpassed in cordiality even the well-grounded anticipations he had formed from the assurances of the President and other friends. Notwithstanding the flattering manner in which his friend, in introducing him to the Institute, had spoken of his contributions to the science of iron metallurgy, he could not take to himself alone the significance of this welcome. He knew it was a recognition of the services rendered by the body which he had the honor to represent; and he was glad to see present a member of that body, Mr. Thomas Whitwell, who had fortunately been able to make the journey at this time, and whom he had had the pleasure of meeting on the shores of Lake Champlain. A computer simulation is being developed for in-situ leaching of unbroken, Zn-Pb-Ag sulphide ore. Ferric chloride is the selected reagent. Experimental work showed that a diffusion control model of the kinetic aspects was better than a surface chemical reaction control model. Entrapped reactive grains were accessible to reagent in the samples tested. Precipitated sulphur did not seriously hinder the reaction.

Dissolution mechanism and solubility of chlorine in the oxide melts, such as CaO-SiO2-Al2O3 (-Na2O), Na2O-SiO2-Al2O3 and CaO-SiO2-FeO systems, have been equilibrium technique was employed with controlled Po2 and PCl2, (Po2 = 10-6 -10 19 atm, PCl2 10-6 -10-13 atm at 1673-1748 K). The solubility of chlorine in the 40mass%CaO-40mass%SiO2- 20mass%Al2O3, slag was found to vary in proportion to Pb2/ w and pc/z/p' which proved that chlorine dissolved in the melts as C1 anion. Hence, the chloride capacity (CCI-), indicating the ability of molten oxide to absorb chlorine, has been defined as; The Ccl value was observed to increase with increasing slag basicity and temperature, and showed a reasonable relationship with that Of CS2-. Based on the result obtained in the present study, chlorine distribution during incineration with slags was predicted quantitatively.

The intimate association of iron formation and massive sulfide deposits has been documented by many investigators (McAllister, 1960; Hutchinson, 1972). In a classic example of such an association four distinct facies (oxide, carbonate, silicate, and sulfide) were identified in an Algoma type iron formation occurring in Paleozoic rocks, but exhibiting physical features (banding) and chemical composition (SiO2 + A1203 + Fe2O3) typical of Precambrian iron formations. The geochemical variation of the iron formation was studied by analyzing 62 samples for Si, Al, Fe, P, S, and CO2. Following a model proposed by James (1954), the geochemical and mineralogical variation of the iron formation can be used as an excellent tool for the exploration of massive sulfide deposits.

A numerical method for discriminating between replacement and sedimentary processes is applied to a folded stratiform sulphide occurrence. It is shown that numerical treatment of chemical analyses from a single diamond drill hole allowed a rapid assignment of the ore to the syngenetic sedimentary class and thereby enabled a revision of the evaluation program concerned with consequent reduction in costs.

HARD as it is at any time to provide more than three million tons of coal each year for power plants, the task really gets rugged in the wintertime when the fuel freezes solid in the cars. At the Marysville plant of the Detroit Edison Co. the problem of unloading cars of frozen coal was severe because there was an unloader over only one of the two tracks in the coal unloading house. Moving downward by their own weight, with no driving force to aid them, the spuds of this old unloader were unable to break through the crust on a frozen coal car. 20,000 Lb Force To meet this problem, a new mechanical car unloader was installed over No. 2 track and placed in service in December 1947. It is a Kenney type unloader built by Heyl & Patterson, Inc. of Pittsburgh, Pa., a modification of equipment originally designed to unload iron ore cars. The major advantage of this unloader is the force with which it can drive the sharp spade on the end of its ram down through the pockets of a frozen coal car. The unloader consists of the following major units: 1. A traveling bridge structure. 2. A traveling trolley. 3. A retractable and oscillating ram. 4. The operators cab and controls. The bridge is provided with safety hooks to prevent its being lifted from the rails by the upwards push of the ram. The bridge will travel 190 fpm and has sufficient traction on its four wheels to move three loaded 70 ton cars. The trolley runs on tracks supported by the bridge girders and also has upper tracks to control the push from the ram. Two of the single-flange trolley wheels are driven by a one and a quarter hp dc motors equipped with magnetic brakes. The ram is raised and lowered by a 20 hp dc motor equipped with a magnetic brake. A full stroke of a little over 14 ft is given the ram through its rack and pinion drive and the spade can be pushed down into a loaded car with a force of about 20,000 lb. A 15 hp dc motor with a magnetic brake is applied to this drive and is able to swing the ram 45º either side of the vertical. The usual procedure in emptying a coal car is first to drive the sharp spade down through the coal until the pocket is opened and the coal starts to run out the hopper. When all the hoppers are open, the sweeping action of the ram and spade is used to move the remainder of the coal in the car over to the open hoppers. The travel of the trolley permits cleaning the sides of a coal car with the edges of the spade, using the sweeping motion of the ram. It is still necessary to clean out the corners of the car by hand. Final Clean-Out This unloader was a new development and there were improvements to be made before it was completely satisfactory, such as reduction in speed and conversion to ac drive motors. However, it helped at Marysville and unloaded many frozen cars that would have taken a lot of heating to thaw out enough for the old unloader to handle. The mechanical coal unloader described above was a considerable improvement but still left a job to be done by hand-the final cleaning out of the coal cars. The ram had the ability to open a hole through the hopper cars, but did not meet required unloading speed. "The ability to adjust the speed of a SAG mill offers benefits to the process and to equipment maintenance. It can be provided with some slight effect on availability ranging from somewhat enhanced to somewhat reduced, depending on the particular equipment that is used. Several techniques have been developed for monitoring the magnitude of the contained charge, and several algorithms have been used to control mill feed rate and mill speed. The various benefits and the means by which they can be realized are examined and compared. Reasons for Variable SpeedProcess RequirementsThe recovery of minerals from ore is dependent on particle size and residence time in process. Separation in a given plant is most efficient at a particular rate and a particular size (e.g., 80% minus 200 mesh). If the particle size increases, less mineral will be liberated. If the particle size is significantly reduced, the process of choice may not be able to effect separation, and power, media, and maintenance costs would be increased.If a SAG mill-ball mill combination delivers the desired throughput at the correct size for efficient separation when processing ore of the design hardness, some adjustment must be made to maintain this condition when the ore changes. The processing of ore softer than design will result in overgrinding, unless:• the throughput is increased inversely to the change in hardness which lowers recovery by overloading the separation facilities;• or the SAG mill feed rate remains constant, but the speed is reduced to feed coarser material to the ball mill for finish grinding to the desired size.There is also the effect of changing milldiameter to consider. A nominal 36 ft diameter SAG mill will have an effective diameter of 35 ft with new liners and 35 ft 6 in. with worn liners. A mill designed to operate at 0.76 p.u. (per unit) of critical speed with new liners (9.84 rpm) will be changed to 0.765 p.u. with worn liners. If 0.76 p.u. is the desired value, the mill speed should be reduced to 9.77 rpm."

A mine collapse severs communication with trapped miners. Landlines are crushed and commercially available radios cannot penetrate hundreds of feet of dense, conductive earth without the use of regenerative repeaters that may also be crushed. This paper describes a proof-of-concept device that uses seismic P-waves, instead of radio waves, to allow communication of a code that represents prearranged messages, including the safe haven location identifier, number of people and air quality, from trapped miners to aboveground rescue units. The transmitter designed is about 0.03 m3 (1 ft3) in size and can broadcast for four hours from its 27-kg (60-lb) battery pack. The receiver consists of a geophone and a 2.5-kg (5.5- lb) signal conditioning unit attached to a laptop computer, which displays the communication signal in real time. Testing in a bituminous coal mine with an MSHA representative revealed the device was able to transmit through 271 m (890 ft) of overburden, at 0° and 12° from vertical, using 500 W of power.

The blasting process is one of the most high-risk activities in mining operations. Shotfirers and blasting crews face hazards from slope failure, toxic gas and fumes, or unstable ground condition every day of the blast. But on the other hand, to ensure all of the holes are detonated, shotfirers are required to reenter the location to check. With advances in technology, nowadays the use of drone in mining is not something that is rarely seen. It has been used for mapping and slope-monitoring. This paper will discuss the application of drone for blasting process in a mining pit in East Kalimantan, Indonesia. By using drones, it is not only safety factor which can be improved but also operational efficiency and technical analysis. The duration it takes for post blasting process can be reduced because the drone can directly enter the location after blast. The technical analysis for the blast can also become more comprehensive, as the before-after photos and video documentation can be taken with wider view. It helps with fly rock calculation and fragmentation analysis too.

The Bureau of Mines conducted research to develop triggered barrier systems for protection against gas explosions that can occur in underground coal mines during the use of continuous miners. Several extinguishing agents were tested in barriers at a simulated mine face. Water, powered by pressurized nitrogen, was found to be efficient in stopping fully developed gas explosions, but it had little effect against the explosion during its incipient stage. Hybrid combinations of currently known extinguishants, however, were successful against incipient explosions. Three hybrids that were developed and tested consisted of Halon 1301, combined with either an aqueous foam solution, water, or a dry chemical powder. The three hybrids were found to be more efficient than any constituent alone. Results of the tests point to a synergism between the hybrid components, and indicate that the Halon aids in dispersing its constituent and also converts the aqueous foam solution into a stable fine foam and the water into fine drops.

H. M. Howe, Boston, Mass. (Communication to the Secretary): One by one our venerated idols are shattered, our cherished beliefs are filched away. Mr. Pearce's interesting experiments on the effect of an intermixture of coal in expelling arsenic from roasting copper-ores seems at the first blush to spike one of the great cannons of our faith. Plattner, however, is so positive that coal does lead to the expulsion of arsenic that we may well pause before accepting Mr. Pearce's results as final, and ask whether there is not some explanation of the discrepancy between them and Plattner's statements. Plattner states that while ferric arseniate decomposes easily under the action of carbonaceous matter with expulsion of arsenic as arsenious oxide (As2O3) and sub-oxide of arsenic (it is now generally thought, I believe, that this supposed sub-oxide is really but a mixture of metallic arsenic and arsenious oxide); cupric arseniate, on the other hand, undergoes this decomposition with difficulty, usually forming a certain proportion of arsenide of copper. Now, may not the whole matter lie just here? Mr. Pearce experimented on an ore containing its arsenic as enargite, sulph-arsenide of copper. This, in roasting, would probably give rise to arseniate
