"As extruded Mg-9Zn-0.6Zr-2Er magnesium alloys were hot-rolled at 400°C, followed by solution treatment at 400 °c for 1. 5h and artificial aging at 200°C for 10h. Microstructures and tensile mechanical properties of the alloys after hot rolling, solution and aging treatment were examined respectively. Optical micrographs of the as-rolled and as-solution alloys showed fine grain structures, due to the formation of Er-and Zn-bearing compounds at grain boundaries which obviously improved the thermal stability of the alloy. Yield strength as high as about 335 MPa was obtained for the as-rolled alloy, showing that the mechanical properties of the alloy was greatly benefit from the grain refinement and dynamic precipitation of fine MgZn2 during hot rolling. Due to solution heat treatment, vast majority of the Mg-Zn phases dissolved into the matrix, and precipitated out again as fine dispersoid during the subsequent aging, resulting in an enhanced aging-hardening effect.IntroductionWith high specific strength and low density, magnesium alloy has stimulated significant interest for the applications in microelectronics, aerospace and automobile industries. Due to its HCP structure, magnesium alloys exhibit relatively poor strength and ductility. Great efforts have been made to improve the properties of magnesium alloys.Thermo-mechanical processing which combined with subsequent heat treatment can strengthen magnesium alloys due to the strain-hardening mechanism, homogeneous distribution of second particles and grain refinement [1, 2]. However, commercial wrought magnesium alloys have high tendency of grain growth at high temperature due to lack of effective solutions to stabilize the microstructure [3, 4, and 6]. But Magnesium-RE alloys containing high rare earth were reported to have remarkable thermal-stability, Rare earth (RE), such as Y, Nd, Yb, Gd, Ce, were known to form second-phase particles that have higher thermal stability combining with Zn and matrix in Mg[12-17]."

The early stages of recrystallization in a 70 pct cold-rolled Si-Fe crystal of the (110) (0011) orientation were studied with a Siemens electron microscope. Orientation studies based on electron-diffractzotz. patterns confirm the results of previous texture analysis. The driving energy for recrystallizatior and the critical radius for growth were calculated from the dislocation energy and the energy of the subgrain bourzdaries, and it was found consistent with the observed size of the recrystallized grains. The recrystallization characteristics of crystals with different initial orientations are discussed. The recrystallization of cold-rolled (110)[001] crystals of Si-Fe has been widely studied by various investigators.1-4 Their results on both deformation and annealing textures are in good agreement. The rolling texture after 70 pct reduction consists mainly of two crystallographically equivalent (111) [112] type textures and a minor component of the (100) [011] type. The latter is derived from the deformation twins, or Neumann bands, which are formed during the early stages of deformation and later rotate to the (100) [011] orientation upon further rolling reduction. Between the two main (111) [112] type textures, there is some orientation spread, because of which very low intensity areas appear in the pole figure. If these very low intensity areas are considered to be a very weak component in the texture, then a (110) [ 001 ] orientation may be assigned to them. When this rolled crystal is annealed at a sufficiently high temperature for recrystallization, the texture returns to a simple (110) [001]. The purpose of the present investigation was primarily to seek a better understanding of the recrystallization process by using the electron transmission technique. The (110) [0011 type of crystal was selected because orientation data for it are well known from previous studies with conventional techniques. Direct observations on the recrystallization of such a crystal have also been made by using a hot-stage inside the electron microscope, and the results will be reported in another paper. MATERIAL AND METHOD A single-crystal strip of the (110) [001] orientation was prepared from a commercial grade 3 pct Si-Fe alloy by the strain-anneal technique.= The strip was approximately 0.014 in. thick, and was rolled 70 pct at room temperature to a thickness of 0.004 in. Specimens were cut from the rolled strip and were annealed in a purified hydrogen or argon atmosphere. They were then electrolytically polished in a chromic-acetic acid solution to very thin foils. Best results were found by polishing first between two narrowly spaced flat cathodes with the specimen edges coated with acid-resisting paint, followed by polishing between two pointed electrodes until a hole appeared in the center as described by Bollmann.6 It was found that a thin transparent film always formed along the thin edges of the polished specimen. This film was then removed by rinsing the specimen very briefly in a solution of alcohol with a few drops of HF or HCl. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION 1) The Deformed Crystal. From the electron-diffraction patterns taken at various areas of an as-rolled specimen, the texture components as deduced - from ordinary pole-figure analysis were confirmed. Over most of the areas where orientation was examined, a (111) pattern with a [112] direction parallel to the rolling direction was obtained. This corresponds to the main deformation texture of the (111) [112] type. In a few areas the diffraction pattern was (100) [Oil], corresponding to the minor-texture component derived from the Neumann bands. The (110) [001] orientation, which corresponds to the very weak intensity area in the pole figure, was found infrequently. A typical example of the deformed matrix having the (111) type main texture is shown in Fig. 1, where (a) is the microstructure and (b) is the diffraction pattern taken from that area. It was also frequently observed that in other areas more or less continuous rings of weaker intensity were superimposed on the simple (111) diffraction pattern, suggesting the presence of a wide range of additional orientations. Other evidence indicated that the recrystallization characteristics are different in these two different types of areas. The hot-stage observations which provide this evidence will be discussed in another paper. AS shown in Fig. l(a), numerous dislocation-free areas of very small size are embedded in the "clouds" of high-dislocation density. The mining of high-grade, narrow vein deposits is an important field of activity in the precious metal mining sector. The principle factor that has undermined the profitability and effectiveness of mining such ore zones is the substantial dilution that occurs when blasting with explosives during extraction. In order to minimise dilution, the Thermal Fragmentation Mining Method enables the operator to extract a narrow mineralised corridor, 50 cm to 1 metre wide (according to the width of the vein), between two sub-level drifts. By inserting a strong burner powered by diesel fuel and compressed air into a pilot hole previously drilled directly into the vein, a thermal reaction is created, spalling the rock and enlarging the hole to 80 cm in diameter. The remaining ore between the thermal holes is broken loose using low powered explosives, leaving the waste walls intact. This patented method produces highly concentrated ore, resulting in 400% - 500% less dilution when compared to conventional mining methods. The mining method reduces the environmental affects of mining operations since much smaller quantities of rock are displaced, stockpiled, and treated using chemical agents. The fully mechanised equipment operated by a 2-person team (1 thermal fragmentation operator, 1 drilling operator) maximises the effectiveness of skilled personnel, and increases productivity and safety. The Thermal Fragmentation is currently employed in 3 mining operations in North America.

In 1846 a bill was pending in Congress to reduce, or eliminate, the tariff on coal; the debate caused the same writer to visit the mines on the north side of the James River and to write a letter about them to the same paper.' Omitting the political arguments, his account follows: "July 13, 1846. "Early in the morning we rose, washed, combed, and ate a first-rate breakfast, and then went to the Tuckahoe, mined by Messrs. Sneed and Dietrock. Coal was first discovered here sixty years ago, and mined by Colonel Thomas Randolph, the proprietor of the land. They were worked by him for his smith-shops. Since which time they have been worked periodically, up to the war of 1812, when they were abandoned; and recommenced in 1837 under the management of Dr. W. T.- Scott. Subsequently a Company was formed called Tuckahoe Coal Mining Company, which purchased the whole track at a cost of $30,000. They commenced the sinking of a shaft and went as far as 412 feet, and then pitched the fat all into the fire by hauling off altogether in despair. In 1843 Major Sneed went to work at it, and succeeded. I may here remark that Major Sneed has been the pioneer in this business on the North side of the River, and has sunk more shafts than any other man who has pursued this vocation in Eastern Virginia. The difficulties and expense in sinking these shafts are sometimes immense. The coal on the outcrop or surface is not always a guide to where it may be found imbedded many hundred feet under earth and rock. "The Tuckahoe Pits are on the Eastern end of the coal field, within twelve hundred yards of the Canal, and about twelve miles from Richmond. They employ fifty hands and raise some three hundred thousand bushels of coal per year. It is highly bituminous and excellent for the manufacture of iron. The Tredegar and Belle Isle Rolling Mills are supplied with it. It must be good and of the right kind', or they would not use it. These pits are the only. ones on this side troubled-with gas-of course ventillation is necessary. There is not as much water in this Pit as I have found generally in many others, although they have extended their operations to a considerable distance under ground. I have observed in examining the coal mines, that, where they are sunk over four or five hundred feet, they are annoyed by gas, and where there is a less depth they are troubled with water. It is evident, therefore, that water, in the region of these coal fields, does not run through the earth to any extent, even five hundred feet deep, and the farther you go below that the greater the increase of gas. "We next visited William Cottrell's Pits, situated one mile and a half north of this. He employs some thirty hands, and raises from 4 to 500 bushels per day. "T. & R. With solvent extraction now being accepted as a major method for recovering copper from leach liquors, the authors' company decided that in tankhouse design full advantage was not being taken of the benefits available from sol- vent extraction produced electrolytes. Consequently, a major development program was undertaken to examine means of operating such tankhouses with current densities in excess of current electrowinning practice. Techniques investigated included high circulation of liquors, current reversal and the application of ultrasonics. At the same time there was a necessity for improving the quality of cathodes produced from electrolytes of high free acid content. The application of anodes which are capable of reducing or eliminating the lead content of cathodes is described in the paper. The other problem area in eletrowinning from solvent extraction produced electrolytes is the production of a higher degree of acid mist. Techniques for alleviating this problem are described bearing in mind their possible effects on the solvent extraction section of the plant.

The world's production in 1939 of petroleum substitutes—of which approxi-mately 97 per cent are direct substitutes for motor fuels—is tentatively estimated at 108,ooo,ooo bbl., or equivalent to the combined output of crude oil in 1939 of Rumania, Mexico and Colombia. With few exceptions, these figures of production represent also actual figures of consumption. The United States, owing mainly to its output of natural gasoline, leads all countries in the production of these products, with about 53 per cent of the total. In European countries, particularly Germany, the imminence of war in 1939 forced an increase in production and im- provement of methods of manufacturing motor fuels, largely from coal, with the result that this country produced in that year over 20,000,000 bbl. of substitutes. The Institute has lost a valued member by the death of Eckley B. Coxe, Jr. He bore the name of one who was largely instrumental in founding the Institute, and to whose support and guidance as active member, Vice-President, and President, the Institute owes. much. Eckley B. Coxe, Jr., was the nephew of the late Eckley B. Coxe. He held a large interest in the coal estates owned and developed by his family, and he was thus naturally led to take a continuing interest in mining matters, and for years and up to the time of his death was a full member of the Institute. He died at his residence, Drifton, Pa., on Sept. 20 last, aged 44. He was a member of the class of '93 of the University of Pennsylvania,. of which great institution he was a devoted alumnus. His educational and charitable activities were numerous, but his chief life-work and interest was in archeological investigation and research in Egypt, carried on through the Museum of the University of Pennsylvania of which Museum he was President. The discoveries made by the various expeditions financed and directed by him, and the notable publications issued by his direction and at his expense, chronicling the results, are among the most important researches ever made of buried Egypt. Mr. Coxe was a member of the International Historical Society and of many educational and charitable organizations. By his will, among other bequests, he left $500,000 to the Museum of the University of Pennsylvania and $100,000 to the University, the income of the latter fund to be applied to increasing the salaries of the professors of the Institution. He also left $100,000 to the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, of which he was a manager, and in addition thereto $10,000 of which the income is to be applied in providing Christmas presents for .the child patients, and in providing an annual dinner for the patients and attendants of the hospital. He bequeathed $50,000 to Leonard Hall, an associate mission of the Episcopal Church, at South Bethlehem, Pa., $25,000 to the Epileptic Hospital and Colony Farm (Philadelphia) ; $50,000 to the Philadelphia Orthopaedic Hospital and Infirmary for Nervous Diseases; $15,000 to the United Charities of Hazleton, Pa., the income to be applied to the salaries of nurses; and $25,000 to the Mining and Mechanical Institute of the Anthracite Coal Region of Pennsylvania, founded by his uncle, Eckley B. Coxe, and of which Eckley B. Coxe, Jr., was an active trustee up to the time of his death. This Institute is known as one of the best preparatory schools for technical education in Pennsylvania, and is mainly devoted to extending an opportunity for education by day and night schools to the boys and young men of the Anthracite Region. Its principal is an alumnus of Lehigh University; it has an able local Board of Trustees, and an Advisory Board consisting of the Provost of the University of Pennsylvania, the President of Lafayette College, and the President of Lehigh University, all three of which institutions have established prize scholarships in the institute. Mr. Coxe carne of a distinguished ancestry, the record of which is fully given in the biographical notice of his uncle, Eckley B. Coxe, by Dr. R. W. Raymond, in Vol. XXV of the Transactions.`

"Pile response under combined uplift and lateral load is very important and it is imperative to evaluate the effect of combined loading and only few studies were reported on pile behavior under combined uplift and lateral loads. Model pile made-up of aluminum having an outer and inner diameter of 25.4 mm and 19.4 mm respectively is used. Dimensions of the model steel tank are fixed as 1.0 m x1.0 m x 1.2 m (depth) to avoid the boundary effects under combined lateral and uplift loads. Experiments were carried out on single piles at isolated uplift, isolated lateral loading and combined lateral and uplift loading, embedded in sandy soil. Results indicate that load–deflection behavior is nonlinear for isolated uplift and lateral load tests as well as in case of combined loadings. It is also observed that the behavior of piles under isolated loadings is substantially different when compared to combined loading.INTRODUCTIONPile foundations are generally used to support compressive loads from superstructures. Some structures, like transmission towers, mooring systems for ocean surface or submerged platforms, tall chimneys, jetty structures, etc. are constructed on pile foundations, which have to resist large lateral and uplift loads and moments. The various loads (compressive, lateral and uplift) and moments act on the piles simultaneously rather than isolated manner. There are well-established theoretical methods present to evaluate the pile behaviour under different isolated loadings namely, verticalcompressive, vertical-uplift and lateral (Poulos and Davis, 1980), but there are very limited studies focused on pile behaviour under combined loadings. Though there is good number of studies reported on pile behaviour under combined compressive-lateral and compressive-uplift loadings (Ramasamy, 1974; Jain et al. 1987; Zhang and Small, 1999; Dash and Pise, 2003; Karthigeyan et al. 2006 & 2007; , there are only very few studies reported on pile behaviour under combined uplift and lateral loads. Darr et al. (1990) described an approach to a rational solution of the interaction of pile to combined uplift and lateral loads based on analytical and experimental studies. Influence of cyclic loading was also considered. Narasimha Rao and Prasad (1993) investigated the uplift behaviour of pile anchors subjected to lateral cyclic loading. There were many onshore and offshore situations where lateral cyclic loading may affect both the pullout and lateral loading capacity of pile anchors. Jetty and wharf structures are usually subjected to lateral forces from wave and wind action. If these cyclic lateral loads are acting on the supporting piles, the resulting movement of the upper part of the embedded length of pile may reduce the skin friction. This progressive deterioration in pullout resistance may not be reflected by a pullout test made soon after the installation. Hence, Tomlinson and Woodward (2008) pointed out that a generous safety factor on the ultimate pullout load should be adopted for piles in such situations. Mroueh and Shahrour (2007, 2008) presented a threedimensional finite element analysis of the response of battered piles to the combined lateral and vertical pullout loads. Nevertheless, the model is not validated well due to lack of good experimental data based on rigorous experiments. Thus there is a scope for investigating the effect of lateral load on pile behaviour under uplift load and vice versa based on carefully designed experiments, which is main focus of the present investigation."

Neither the copper orebodies nor the zinc-lead-silver orebodies at Mount Isa were formed syntectonically as has been claimed for the last 20 and 10 years respectively. Both orebody types were cogenetic, coeval, and formed early during the sedimentation and diagenesis of the host formation. The copper orebodies are interpreted as having formed diagenetically at hand specimen scale, syngenetically at formation scale. The zinc-lead-silver orebodies are interpreted as having formed primarily by sedimentary means at both hand specimen and formation scales.

Although it is well understood that in flotation collection zone and froth zone are deeply interconnected, and reagents (and in particular collectors and frothers) cannot be selected without considering their synergistic effect, this concept is rarely applied in plant practice. The feed mineralogy also has an important role in how particles and reagents interact in flotation, which is sometimes overlooked by operators. In this work, a combination of batch flotation tests and froth stability measurements was used to optimise the collector and frother scheme for the flotation of a copper ore. The methodology was applied to an Australian copper plant which was experiencing high variability in froth stability in the roughers when the feed ore mineralogy was changing. It was hypothesised that chalcopyrite in the feed in combination with isobutyl-xanthate had a destabilising effect on the froth phase under the reagents scheme used. Froth stability was restored if a shorter chain length, less hydrophobic, xanthate was employed. It is apparent that the hydrophobicity of adsorbed films at the solid/liquid/air interfaces has a critical role in enhancing or reducing froth stability. Unstable froth causes a reduction in copper recovery in spite of a high collection zone flotation rate. The case study suggests that collection zone and froth zone can rarely be optimised independently of each other. With the laboratory procedure adopted, a more suitable reagents scheme was determined to respond to changes in the feed mineralogy, avoiding fluctuations in plant performance due to unexpected froth instability.CITATION:Farrokhpay, S and Zanin, M, 2012. A number of mineral deposits occur in close proximity to the Pacific plate fronts. Among these deposits are gold-silver and the base metal sulphide deposits of copper, zinc and lead. Gold deposits that commonly occur in these areas are of hydrothermal origin. Of these the epithermal deposits have attracted the attention of the exploration geologists as well as the metallurgists. One vital aspect of the activity of the geologists is the development of models for epithermal gold mineralisation in the Pacific Rim. These models can also be used by metallurgists for predicting gold extraction processes. This paper reviews the mineralogy, fineness and the host minerals of gold and examines the data in the light of gold mineralisation in the southwest Pacific Rim. The gold mineralisation models proposed for the Pacific Rim have been used to predict gold extraction processes suitable for the various mineralisation types. Discussed also are the mineralisation and treatment processes of some selected epithermal gold deposits and gold-rich porphyry copper deposits in Indonesia, Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands, Fiji and New Zealand.

The central part of the early Proterozoic Ketilidian orogen in South Greenland consists of an I-type granitoid batholith transected by four regional NE-SW-trending shear zones. Thebatholith was probably emplaced during subduction, from the south toward the Archaean craton in the north, in a sinistral transpressional system. A regional sediment sampling program covering5000km2shows a close connection between a gold-mineralized trend and one of the major shearzones within the epizonal facies of the batholith. The gold mineralization is not directly related to the major shear zones, but occurs in quartz-veined and silicified second-order structures. High-grade(up to 114 ppm Au over 6 m) low-tonnage mineralization is found within these second-order structures cutting both amphibolites and granitoids. The mineralization is characterized by negligible or small alteration halos. Gold is associated with various element combinations of enhanced As-Bi-W-Cu, which indicate that the mineralization is mesothermal in origin.

The resistivity anomaly known as the K state was studied in Ni-Mo alloys containing 10.5 and 14.0 at. pct Mo. Both these alloys exhibit a large K effect which depends on the mechanical and thermal treatment. On the basis of X-ray diffuse scattering studies which were correlated with resistivity measurements, it appears that the K state in dilute Ni-Mo alloys can be associated with changes in the degree of short-range order within the a phase. An interesting phenomenon that has received much attention in recent years is the K state. The K state is marked by anomalous changes in some of the physical properties of certain alloys without the occurrence of observable microscopic structural changes. One of the early pieces of work in this area was by Thomas' who studied alloys of Ni-Cr, Ni-Cu, Ni-Cu-Zn, Fe-A1, Fe-Si, and Ni-A1. Upon annealing specimens which had been previously cold-worked or quenched from an elevated temperature he found an anomalous increase in resistivity over a certain temperature range. He also found that specimens which had been appropriately annealed to develop the K state showed a decrease in resistivity upon subsequent cold working. These effects are opposite to those found in normal alloys. Although the resistivity anomaly has been rather arbitrarily taken as the "definition" of the K state, there are several other interesting effects which accompany the resistivity increase. In Ni-Cr alloys,2, 3 for example, it was found that the hardness increases with increasing resistivity. It was also found that specimens which have been treated to develop the K state can be cold-worked for as much as an 80 pct reduction of area without an increase in the hardness. In Fe-A1 and Fe-Si alloys4 the K state is accompanied by an increase in flow stress and by a lattice contraction. In Ni-A1 alloys,5 specimens which have been treated to develop the K state also show an increase in elastic modulus. In Ag-Pd alloys6 the increased resistivity observed on annealing a cold-worked specimen is accompanied by an increase in the thermoelectric power and an increase in the Hall coefficient. The explanations of the K state phenomena are varied and depend upon the particular alloy in question. Several theories have been advanced to explain the increased conductivity with cold work on the basis of changes in the electronic configuration of the alloy as a result of local lattice distortions.7"9 Most investigators, however, believe that some type of local order in the solid solution, either short-range order (SRO) or clustering, is responsible for this effect. Theories concerning the relationship between ordering and the K state have for the most part been speculative, since there is little direct X-ray evidence that can be correlated with the above property changes. Much of the previous work on the K state was done in the Ni-Cr system where the small difference in the X-ray atomic scattering factors of the components nickel and chromium makes it very difficult to use X-ray diffuse-scattering measurements to determine the role of local order. In the Ni-A1 system, however, Starke et al.10 succeeded in detecting a connection between local order and the K state. It was found that a small but measurable K effect correlated with increasing SRO in the nickel-rich a phase. The manner in which local order might increase the resistivity of K state alloys is not completely clear. Since most of the known K state alloys contain at least one transition element, significance has frequently been attached to the presence of an unfilled d shell. It has been suggested that during the formation of the K state the number of conduction electrons decreases as a result of the transfer of s electrons to the d shell where they are more tightly bound.1'11'12 Koster and Rocholl13 have proposed that SRO can cause an increase in resistivity for alloy systems in which the number and mobility of charge carriers are reduced when the percent solute is increased. According to this hypothesis, the local environment of a given solvent atom changes in the same manner with increasing percent solute as it does with an increasing degree of SRO; hence the change in physical properties should tend in the same direction. In this hypothesis, SRO is considered only in a statistical sense, and the increased resistivity of the K state is attributed to a change in the mean distribution of electrons and holes in the s and d states as a result of SRO. From the work of Chen and Nicholson on Ag-Pd alloys,6 it appears that the K state can occur in systems for which the d shell is completely filled. These investigators explained the increased resistivity by picturing the SRO as small domains of some form of long-range order (LRO). According to ~ibson,'~ the number of effective electrons can be reduced by the creation of a new Brillouin zone boundary near the Fermi surface of an alloy as a result of the changing crystallographic symmetry that accompanies the formation of a superlattice. This idea may be expressed in terms of the superzone concept.15 In the present work the role of local order in the formation of the K state in Ni-Mo alloys was investigated. The principal tools used in this study were X-ray diffuse scattering and electrical resistivity measurements; however, these data were supplemented by electron microscopic and field-ion microscopic data. The purpose of the work was to determine whether or not the K state in Ni-Mo alloys can indeed be attributed to the formation of SRO as has been proposed by previous investigators.

The Imperial Smelting Furnace (ISF) was developed in Britain during the 1950's as a process which could produce zinc from a blast furnace. Since then it has evolved into an efficient means of producing zinc and lead from lower grade raw materials, both of primary and secondary origin. These changes have been in response to the need to improve the cost competitive position of the ISF in a climate of decreasing metal prices. The improvements at the Cockle Creek smelter of Sulphide Corporation Pty Limited have resulted from work undertaken in four main areas: 1. Changes in plant design and operating practice to give more stable furnace operation. 2. Improvements to the quality of sinter being charged to the furnace. 3. Improved monitoring of process variables and the formulation of control strategies based on the improved data. 4. Increased understanding of the processes occuring within the furnace shaft to allow predictive modelling to be undertaken. Work in these areas is still progressing but the work to date has resulted in a significant improvement in the production rate and efficiency of operation.

JUST as I have taught you to refine silver in a small way and to make assays, so now I wish to teach you how to make cupeling hearths in place of these little cupels when you have silver in large quantities. This is done in four ways, as I have seen, but all are alike in the end and differ very little one from the other. There are some who make use of a furnace with a vault built with bricks above the cupeling hearth. There are some others who use in place of this an iron hood like a large cover. There are some others who use only heavy dry sticks of oak or some other thick wood. Others have certain long plates of terra cotta that cover the whole hearth in three or four pieces; the two of these that adjoin have [56] a hole in the middle that leads exactly into the middle of the cupeling hearth, and through this they put in the material and the lead, according to the practice I shall describe.

The condition of the domestic mining industry is obviously affected by the cycles in general business conditions. This study, the results of which are presented in a series of 78 charts, attempts to examine the interrelationships between the general business indicators and the major statistical measures for the base-metals industries during the cycles in the United States economy following World War II. For these industries the cyclical problem is perhaps less acute than the secular-trend problem. However, short-run fluctuations in production and employment do have very important impacts upon the welfare of the regions which derive a significant portion of their income from base-metals mining and processing industries. Any information concerning the normal patterns of development as the industries enter into a cyclical recession will permit better forecasts and perhaps help promote measures to alleviate the distress that occurs. Also, a systematic study of the comparative movements among the statistical measures during a series of cycles can bring to the fore the economic causation involved, and perhaps, after intensive study, can lead to a better method of short-range forecasting for these industries. This study has not fully achieved these aims. However, observations which significantly aid the interpretation of the current monthly statistics on these commodities are made, and some very general conclusions are drawn. The charts are presented so the interested people can examine them and draw additional conclusions. The charts refer specifically to cyclical analysis. The technique of indexing each cycle to its turning point effectively subordinates the longer term trend movements of the data. Thus, certain general conclusions flowing from this study and from the continuing economic research of the Office of Chief Economist will aid the reader by clarifying the frame of reference within which the charts should be examined.

This paper on coarse particle recovery (CPR) summarizes a process to capture coarse particles that are not recoverable by regular flotation. Several porphyry copper operations in the world operate analogous circuits that recover non-floated copper from tailings; however, the case presented here is unique in that extensive underlying test work has allowed the authors to elucidate some fundamental principles behind recovery enhancement. This paper discusses an overview of the flowsheet that is proposed to Minera Escondida Ltda., the nature of copper in the feed to the CPR circuit, and the various unit operations within the recovery circuit.

in March 1999, the School of Mining Engineering at the University of New South Wales carried out a series of underground trials using " Evermine", a South African developed two-part water based polymer membrane. The aim of the trials was to determine the potential of a spray-on polymer membrane such as Evermine as an alternative to conventional rib support systems The mine selected was Angus Place colliery, reputed to have some of the worst ground conditions of any Australian underground coal mine. Ribs at Angus Place are supported by conventional pattern bolting supplemented by wire mesh. The trials indicate that there is significant potential for the introduction of polymer membranes into the underground coal minim; industry Initial results indicated that ribs that had been sprayed exhibited less displacement and spalling than unsprayed ribs. particularly when subjected to abutment loads from an approaching long-wall Further research will he required to conclusively rate the performance of Evermine in comparison to other products in the market and the long term performance of the product
