FLUXES, in general, may be classified according to their use as soldering, foundry or casting, and metallurgical and the chemistry of their action follows quite closely this division. The term foundry or casting fluxes, as used here, refers to the substances added to molten metals, preparatory to casting into molds or ingots, with the object of removing small amounts of impurities that have been introduced in handling or melting the metal, which was placed in a fair state of purity by the previous refining or metallurgical processes. The sources of these impurities are the oxide coating on the surface of the ingots, material extracted or mechanically removed from the crucible or furnace wall, and those formed by the reaction of the molten metal with the heating gases or furnace atmosphere. As commonly used, the term fluxes is applied to such materials as ammonium chloride, zinc chloride, salt, borax, and boric oxide. A second class of materials, usually called deoxidizers, includes substances such as metallic phosphides, sub-oxides, carbides, and bo-rides, that reduce the metallic oxides present in the metal. A third class includes various compounds that arc molten and non-volatile at the temperature of the molten metal and are used primarily to protect the surface of the metal from the action of the furnace or exterior atmosphere; to this class belong such mixtures as lime and fluorspar, lime and soda ash, various minerals, etc. In some cases these protective layers may act in a manner similar to the metallurgical fluxes and dissolve or unite with the oxide impurities of the metal, but as generally employed this latter action is negligible since there is little opportunity for the coverings to come into contact with more than the surface of the metal, and hence they arc without action on the body of the molten mass. The use of fluxes is the result of factory experience and tradition, but an extensive study has not been made of the chemical and physical actions that occur or the effects of these actions on the properties of the metal. No entanto, este apresenta uma série de desafios, principalmente em relação à determinação de algumas variáveis e como essas podem afetar a resistência das juntas soldadas. Neste trabalho, investigou-se a influência de diferentes procedimentos de soldagem em tubos de aço SAE 4130 sem costura com e sem a deposição e com a aplicação ou não de pré-aquecimento. Após procedimentos de soldagem, as propriedades mecânicas e a microestrutura da junta soldada, zona fundida, zona termicamente afetada e metal base, foram avaliadas por meio de ensaios de microdureza, de dobramento e análise metalográfica. Foi possível avaliar a influência da aplicação do pré-aquecimento e analisar as propriedades mecânicas e microestrutura das juntas soldadas. Os perfis de microdureza revelaram a importância do pré-aquecimento. O ensaio de dobramento possibilitou a avaliação das juntas de maneira qualitativa. Porém, um ensaio quantitativo, como o de tração, possibilitaria mais informações.

High stress conditions in weak rock masses lead to large deformation and breakdown of the rock material, while stress release events in hard rock mines can lead to sudden and usually violent rock failure. Typical support systems combine various reinforcement and support mechanisms to provide the required convergence control and retainment, but results are often mitigated by failure of surface liners, shotcrete and tendons. The paper reviews differing requirements of support and reinforcement for different failure types. In addition, the mechanical performance of a new reinforcing tendon is presented and analysed in view of the field requirements. Field tests results are presented.

GENERAL GEOLOGY Coal is defined as a combustible rock that had its origin in the accumulation and physical and chemical alteration of vegetation. Coal can be ignited and burned like the wood that was man's earliest fuel, but coal gives more heat than the same amount of wood and has many industrial uses. Unlike wood, coal is not generally found on the surface of the ground but is mined from the solid rock of the earth. Before taking up the occurrence, formation, and the somewhat unique character of coal in the rock sequence, let us briefly consider the general character of all rocks in the crust of the earth. Relatively little is known about the very earliest history of the earth, although a number of logical theories have been developed. Manned exploration of the moon and the rocks being returned to earth will, we hope, provide some answers to questions concerning the earth's origin and history. The period of earth history with which we concern ourselves here begins after great areas of water had evolved on earth and substantial land areas of once molten (igneous) rock existed. Weathering and other processes that attacked the surface of the rocks reduced them to small particles. Water provided by rainfall transported this material, ultimately, to large bodies of water where it was deposited. Thus was initiated the geologic sequence of sedimentary rocks that lie above the once molten igneous rocks. The crust of the earth is not completely stable, and throughout the geologic past portions of the crust have moved laterally and vertically. Even today, many coastal areas are slowly rising or sinking. More sudden earth movements are recognized by the earthquakes they cause. Throughout geologic history, rises in sea level or the sinking of the land areas have many times permitted the oceans to cover much of what are now the areas of the continents. The surface, gain boundary, and twin boundary energies, as well as the surface diffusion coefficient, of cobalt were determined from tests at 1354°C in pure hydrogen. A value of 1970 ergs per sq cm was calculated for the surface energy, using the zero creep method. It was possible to measure the creep strains at room temperature because the phase transformation was accompanied by negligible irreversible strain and no kinking. Established techniques based on interference microscopy were used to obtain values for the other three properties. The gain boundary and twin boundary energies were 650 ad 12.7 ergs per sq cm, respectively, while a value of 2.75 x l0 sq cm per sec was determined for the surface dufusion coefficient. In the course of a general study of cobalt and cobalt-base alloys, information was required about the surface energy of cobalt. Hence, the present program was undertaken to measure the interfacial free energy, or, briefly, the surface energy, of the solid-vapor interface of cobalt. The microcreep method was selected for this measurement because other surface properties could also be determined from the accompanying thermal grooving at grain boundaries and twin boundaries. A brief summary of the methods for determining the various surface properties follows. At very high temperatures and under applied stresses too small to initiate slip, small-diameter wires will change in length by the process of diffu-sional creep described by Herring.1 The wires acquire the familiar bamboo structure and increase or decrease in length in direct proportion to the net force on the specimen. For a specimen experiencing a zero creep rate, the applied load, wo, necessary to offset the effects of the surface energy, y,, and grain boundary energy, y b, is given by the relation: where r is the wire radius and n is the number of grains per unit length of wire. The first results obtained from wire specimens were reported by Udin, Shaler, and Wulff.' udin3 later corrected these results for the effect of grain boundary energy. The grain boundary energy is determined from measurements of the dihedral angle 8 of the groove which develops by thermal etching at the grain boundary-free surface junction. For an equilibrium configuration: Measurements of the angle 8 can be made on the creep specimens4'5 or on sheet material, as was done in this investigation by a method employing interference microscopy.= If the vapor pressure is low, the rate at which grain boundary grooves widen is determined primarily by surface diffusion and, to a lesser extent, by bulk diffusion. The surface diffusion coefficient, D,, is obtained from interferometric measurements of the groove width as a function of the annealing time, t. As predicted by Mullins~ and verified by experiment, the distance, w,, between the maxima of the humps formed on either side of the grain boundary increases in proportion to if grooving proceeds by surface diffusion alone. For this case: where fl is the atomic volume and n is the number of atoms per square centimeter of surface. When volume diffusion also contributes to the widening, the surface diffusion contribution can be extracted from the data by the method described by Mullins and shewmon.8 Where a pair of twin boundaries intersects a free surface, a groove with an included angle of A + B (using the groove figure and notations of Robertson and shewmong) forms by thermal etching at one twin boundary-free surface junction. If the "torque terms", i.e., the terms in the Herring10 equations describing the orientation dependence of the surface energy, are sufficiently large, an "inverted groove" with an included angle of 360 deg-A'-B' develops at the other intersection. The angles A + B and A' + B' are measured interferometrically. When the angle, , between the twinning plane and the macroscopic surface plane is near 90 deg, the twin boundary energy is calculated from the relation: 1) EXPERIMENTAL TECHNIQUES Five-mil-diam wire containing 56 parts per million impurities was used for making ten creep specimens. These specimens had about 15 mm gage lengths with appended loops of wire and carried loads (the specimen weight below the midpoint of the gage length) ranging from 3.7 to 149.8 mg. The wires were hung inside a can made from 99.6 pct pure cobalt sheet. Beneath the wires were placed small specimens of 20-mil-thick, 99.9982 pct pure cobalt sheet from which the relative twin boundary and grain boundary energies and the surface diffusion coefficient were measured. All the specimens were annealed at a temperature of 1354" i 3°C which is 92 pct of the absolute melting point of cobalt. The furnace atmosphere was 99.9 pct pure hydrogen that was purified further by a Deoxo catalytic unit, magnesium perchlorate, and a liquid-nitrogen cold trap. Single crystal Mo-Re alloys (99.99+ purity), grown by electron bombardment floating zone heating, were deformed in tension at temperatures from -196° to +200°C. At -196oC, Mo-6 pet Re and Mo-20 pct Re alloys deform by slip on systems of the type (101) [1ll]. Above-78oC, the operative slip system is of the type (112) [111], (101) [1ll], or (211) [1ll], depending upon orientation. Mo-39 pct Re alloys deform by twinning and slip at all test temperatures with a (112) [111] type twinning system. Critical resolved shear stress for slip and twinning is calculated as a function of composition and temperature, and the mechanical properties compared with those of less Pure polycrystalline alloys. HEXAGONAL close-packed rhenium, c/a = 1.615, is highly soluble in molybdenum. The bee molybdenum-rich solid solution extends to approximately 42 at. pet Re* at 2500°C,' Fig. 1. Recent work on polycrystalline alloys has shown conclusively that the addition of rhenium to molybdenum improves both the fabricability and the low-temperature ductility.2"5 Similar behavior is observed for W-Re and Cr-Re alloys.5 Initially, Geach and Hughes2 found that the Mo-30 pct Re alloy could be cold rolled to approximately 90 pct reduction before the onset of cracking. The remarkable effect of the rhenium was later confirmed by Jaffee et al. 3-5 with an optimum condition of maximum strength combined with maximum ductility at the Mo-35 pet composition. At higher rhenium contents, the ductility was severely impaired due apparently to the presence of brittle tetragonal s phase, Fig. 1. In the Mo-35 pet Re alloy, at least 110 ppm (parts per million) oxygen could be tolerated before cold workability was reduced. By comparison, the corresponding tolerance figure in unalloyed molybdenum is ~ 10 ppm. The effect of rhenium was considered in terms of: 1) a reduction in oxygen solubility in the lattice; 2) a redistribution of intergranular oxide from grain boundary films to isolated spheres; and 3) the promotion of twinning as a further mode of plastic deformation. Paradoxically, twinning is often associated with brittle fracture in iron and the silicon irons.6'7 Work to date has been restricted to are-melted and powder metallurgy polycrystalline material of ~ 99.9 pet purity. The present investigation was initiated for the purpose of determining the mode and crystallography of plastic deformation of a series of bee Mo-Re alloy single crystals over a wide temperature range from -196o to +200°C. Using high-purity zone-melted material (~ 99.99 + pet purity), the specific role of rhenium in the molybdenum lattice may be understood more fully since effects due to grain boundaries and oxide redistribution will be absent. At the same time, the study provides a comparison of single and polycrystalline deformation behavior. EXPERIMENTAL TECHNIQUES A) Preparation and Purity of Single Crystals. An evaluation was made of one of several improved underground communication systems sponsored by the U.S. Bureau of Mines. The system evaluated was installed in a typical metal/non-metal room and pillar mine and utilized UHF repeaters connected to a unique distributed antenna and passive reflector system which provided mine-wide communications. A microprocessor controlled data collection system was assembled and installed for the evaluation. Data consisting principally or times and durations of messages and identities of the originating transceivers was collected between February and August of 1982 (6 mos.). Analysis of the data shows that the principal benefits are reduction in time required for unscheduled maintenance and repair, enhancement of safety, and better coordination of production activities. A cost benefit analysis shows a net benefit over cost, although it is also concluded that the capacity of the system is greater than can be justified by current activity in the mine.

Tunnels as any other structures are affected by different loads and stresses. Generally, the loads on tunnels consist of both static and dynamic loads. These loads must both be considered in the tunnel design process. In this paper, the stability state of Jiroft water-transform tunnel is evaluated. Firstly, the in-situ stresses and then using Kirsch?s equations the induced stresses due to static loads in walls and crown of tunnel are calculated. Consequently, the strain caused by probable earthquake without considering the interaction between the concrete lining of tunnel and rock mass using seismic analysis is calculated based on free-field deformation. When the strain is determined, the simplified method of closed-form solution, Wang?s equations and Penzien?s equations are used to estimate the applied forces on the tunnel due to earthquake such as axial force and bending moment on a tunnel section taking into account the interaction of the tunnel concrete lining and rock mass. Results of this study show that the loads applied to the tunnel as a result of earthquake waves can be affect the stability of underground structures, especially long structures such as tunnels.

During October 1947 an Authority to Prospect was granted by the Minister of Mines to lVIount Isa Mines Limited over an area of approximately 75 sq. miles to the north of Mount Isa.Application for the Authority to Prospect had been made after Zinc Corporation Limited had been granted prospecting rights over two areas, one of 1,265 acres immediately to the north of the Mount Isa Mines leases and the other of 1,960 acres adjoining the south end of Mount Isa Mines leases.METHODSAs a means of providing a cheap map of sufficient accuracy on which to plot geological features, both Mount Isa Mines Limited and Zinc Corporation Limited agreed upon aerial photographs and the two companies shared the cost of an aerial photographic survey by Adastra Airways of 130 sq. miles which covered the prospecting areas held by both companies.The photographs were on a scale of 800 ft. to I in. with 60% overlap on the north-south runs and 25% overlap east-west. A set of alternate prints enlarged to 400 ft. to 1 \in. were obtained for field work. The 400 ft. to 1 in. scale unglossed photographs (size 18 in. x 18 in.) were taken On to the field and rock outcrops, and uncorrelated structures were plotted directly on to them in red crayon pencil. The geological observations were then transferred in the office to a tracing on which accuracy of azimuth and scale was controlled by use of a photo mosaic and ground surveys.

In the last few years, there have been developed at the plant of the Nichols Copper Co., Laurel Hill, 'Borough of Queens, New York City, improvements in electrolytic copper refining by the series system that have materially increased the flexibility and economy of that system. The purpose of this paper is to discuss, as of interest to refiners and to those who have copper to refine, as well as to the engineering profession in general, the changes' that have taken place resulting in wider application and increased efficiency of the series system. Copper is electrolytically refined in two ways, which are spoken of as the "multiple system" and the "series system." In both systems, the electrolytic tanks are in series electrically. Chronic whole-body vibration exposure, as expected in large construction and mining vehicles, has been associated with neck and back pain and injury.1 While work has been done towards gaining a better understanding of the relationship between vibration and shock and muscle activity of the back musculature2, relatively little information regarding the activity of neck, shoulder and upper arm muscles is known. Today’s equipment designs must conform to domestic and international standards, however these standards do not specifically address the vibration exposure in the head and upper quarter. Further it is not well known how the control configuration within a vehicle (e.g. steering wheel versus arm controls) influences muscle voluntary and reflex activity levels. Greater muscle activity may lead to greater muscle fatigue – which in turn may be associated with greater risk of injury.2 Thus, muscle contractions needed to maintain static postures as well as those resulting reflexively should be considered during an analysis of seating position. Unfortunately, little is known regarding the influence of arm position on head and neck muscle function. The purpose of this study was to investigate the relative muscle activities of 5 neck, shoulder, and upper arm muscles during riding simulations of large construction equipment, using three different arm control options. Methods Five typical heavy equipment ride files were “played back” through a man-rated Servo Test 6-degree of freedom (dof) vibration system. Each ride was repeated using 3 seat and control configurations (steering wheel (SW), floor mounted arm-rest controls (FM), seat mounted arm-rest controls (SM)). Two trials were performed for each ride and seat control combination (each trial: 60 sec of 6-dof and 60 sec of vertical vibration). Five channels of surface electromyography (EMG) of the right-side cervical erector spinae muscles (neck extensors), sternocleidomastoid (neck flexor), upper trapezius (shoulder elevator), biceps brachii (elbow flexor) and triceps brachii (elbow extensor) muscles were collected throughout each ride (~ 2min) using pre-amplified (10x), 1 cm silver bar electrodes, with 1 cm fixed inter-electrode distances (Delsys, Inc). Further analog amplification was set at 10k (1k for one subject), and sampled at 1000Hz using a 12-bit DAQ card and Labview 7.1 software (National Instruments). A total of 7 right-handed male subjects were tested, but only 5 had complete EMG data sets to analyze for this sub-study. EMG was analyzed using root mean square (RMS, in mV) of 20 ms moving windows, and then averaged across the entire trial for a measure of mean total muscle activity (voluntary and reflexive). The muscle activity to maintain the static posture was estimated as the mean RMS EMG over a 1 sec interval just prior to and/or after completion of the ride. Repeated Measures ANOVAs were used to test for with-in subject differences using a = 0.05.

"Material substitution occurs continuously in response to competitive and economic pressures. Technical development can accelerate or slow substitution by improving the performance of the invading or defending material. The choices are seldom simple and have to be made in the context of continuous commercial change.The development and commercialization of a new aluminum material is examined. The material has been introduced into· several different markets, so it is possible to compare and contrast the degree of success obtained in each.IntroductionAluminum-based materials have been in use for over one hundred years and , therefore, the development of a new family of alloys is rare. In the early 1970s, Dr. L.R. Morris and his coworkers at Alcan' s Kingston Research Centre started work on what was, at the time, something of a scientific curiosity-a family of alloys strengthened by an unusual mechanism.This paper deals with the development and commercialization of what became known as the Alcan 255 alloys"". These alloys have found uses in several markets, usually as improved substitutes for existing materials. Forecasting the usefulness of a substitute material in an existing marketplace is difficult, in part, because even material users are seldom able to specify precisely their requirements. This uncertainty can cause the failure of some substitutions but can also lead to opportunities which were not initially obvious.Technical BackgroundPure aluminum is a soft, weak material. It can be strengthened by the addition of various alloying elements and by work hardening. Alloying elements usually act by forming solid solutions which are stronger than the pure metal or by precipitating during heat treating or aging and so preventing the easy movement of dislocations during deformation. Elements which can perform either role had been investigated for decades and were thought to offer little chance of technical breakthrough in 1970. An outgrowth of the then new and exciting research on directional solidification seemed, however, to offer such promise.Some aluminum-iran-manganese alloys will solidify under certain conditions as 'coupled growth' eutectics (Figs. I and 2). The microstructure shows one phase growing as long rods through the other. This is an uncommon structure and it was investigated to see if it had equally unusual properties. On deformation by rolling the rods were broken up into small equiaxed , evenly-spaced particles (Fig. 3). Materials with this structure were found to be stronger than other alloys with similar amounts of alloying addition, and to resist thermal softening remarkably well. This combination of properties was thought initially to be due directly to the particles by a dispersion strengthening mechanism, but later this was found not to be strictly true."

Conceptually, the frequency should be selected to be the frequency of a simple sinusoidal wave that is used to approximate the blast vibration. In the literature, f is sometimes chosen as the dominant frequency (fdm) estimated from the Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) of the blast vibration wave, on other occasions, f is chosen to be the principal frequency (fpr) from the vibration cycle with the peak vibration amplitude.

THE outstanding fact in connection with dust disease in the United States at present is the growing recognition of its seriousness by state officials and by the more progressive operators of mining, metallurgical and allied industrial plants. The same may perhaps be said of labor in some of its better organized centers, but the average independent non-union workman continues, as of yore, to suffer the toll of disability and even of death from dust inhalation without realization of the source of his ill-being. Progress in the betterment of the handling of sufferers from dust disease and of the conditions creating dust hazards in mining and allied industries is pursuing a course similar to that of the now widespread campaign against accidents, in which the risk is more obvious, more severe, and was naturally recognized sooner. The coming on of dust disease is generally relatively slow and its immediate effects not infre¬quently masked by or attributed to other diseases. Marked exceptions to this general rule have occurred in districts where the dust is particularly pernicious, such as the Rand and Joplin; yet such exceptions, unhappy in themselves, opened the eyes of medical men, and of those in other localities charged with the responsibility for the welfare of industry, to the much more widespread if less spectacular hazard. existing from the inhalation of dust in all rock-excavating operations and all industrial operations creating inorganic dust, whether it be crushing and grinding, sand-blasting, granite-cutting, or what not. Advancement to date in the United States in prevention and treatment has been slow, yet the record shows that quantitative methods for determining the degree of hazard and means for decreasing it were being developed as far back as 25 years ago; and that more rapid progress may be looked for from now on. THE outstanding fact in connection with dust disease in the United States at present is the growing recognition of its seriousness by state officials and by the more progressive operators of mining, metallurgical and allied industrial plants. The same may perhaps be said of labor in some of its better organized centers, but the average independent non-union workman continues, as of yore, to suffer the toll of disability and even of death from dust inhalation without realization of the source of his ill-being. Progress in the betterment of the handling of sufferers from dust disease and of the conditions creating dust hazards in mining and allied industries is pursuing a course similar to that of the now widespread campaign against accidents, in which the risk is more obvious, more severe, and was naturally recognized sooner. The coming on of dust disease is generally relatively slow and its immediate effects not infre-quently masked by or attributed to other diseases.
