This paper reports the results of flammability studies for methane, propane. hydrogen, and deuterium gases in air conducted by the Pittsburgh Research Laboratory. Knowledge of the explosion hazards of these gases is important to the coal mining industry and to other industries that produce or use flammable gases. The experimental research was conducted in 20 L and 120 L closed explosion chambers under both quiescent and turbulent conditions, using both electric spark and pyrotechnic ignition sources. The data reported here generally confirm the data of previous investigators, but they are more comprehensive than those reported previously. The results illustrate the complications associated with buoyancy, turbulence, selective diffusion, and ignitor strength versus chamber size. Although the lower flammable limits (LFLs) are well defined for methane (CH,) and Propane (CA), the LFLs for hydrogen (HZ) and its heavier isotope deuterium (D2) are much more dependent on the limit criterion chosen. A similar behavior is observed for the upper flammable limit of propane. The data presented include lower and upper flammable limits, maximum pressures, and maximum rates of pressure rise. The rates of pressure rise, even when normalized by the cube root of the chamber volume (V 1/3), are shown to be sensitive to chamber size.

Kyanite, long known to occur in Georgia, did not excite coimmercial interest until about 1930. Investigation1 revealed two main types of deposits: (1) separate kyanite crystals embedded in mica schist; and (2) crystal aggregates of kyanite associated with quartz in small and very irregular veins. The second kind at first sight appeared to be the best source of supply. Large boulders or dornicks of kyanite with more or less quartz were found on the surface at many places throughout the Piedmont and Highland sections of the state, but prospecting failed to disclose a sizable vein. These dornicks seem to be a surface accumulation from small veins or lens-shaped masses not more than one or two feet thick, and with a horizontal extent of not more than a few feet. 'rile larger surface accumulation of kyanite dornicks, where not too badly stained by iron oxide, may prove to be marketable, but it is extremely doubtful whether a vein large enough to mine will ever be found. In 1932 deposits of the kyanite-mica schist were known to occur in two places northwest of Clarkesville, in Habersharn County. In 1934, at the request of and in cooperation with the Georgia Geological Survey, the United States Geological Survey made a thorough investigation2 of the deposits and found that the two known areas of kyanite-mica schist in Habershain County were but a part of an unsymmetrical, U-shaped belt (Fig. 1) with a western limb extending into Rabun County and somewhat longer than the eastern limb. The total length of the belt is about 30 miles. The width of outcrop ranges from 100 ft. to 1/4 mile or more. Deposits of kyanite-mica schist of very doubtful commercial importance were found in several other counties. Only the deposits of this kyanitc-mica schist belt in Habersham and Rabun counties will bc discussed in this paper. The iron ores of Canada have attracted more or less attention in this country for a number of years ; and having had an opportunity this past summer to examine some of them, especially the magnetic ores, I have thought it might be of sufficient interest to the members of the Institute to put on record some of my observations. The region examined contains, for the most part, only the rocks of the Laurentian system. Much of it was originally covered with a dense growth of pine, which interfered with successful prospecting for ores. However, after the best of the timber had been cut off, fire generally got into the bush and cleared it up pretty well. This, besides making travelling about easier, exposed large surfaces of rock, and rendered the work of the prospector far more liable to be rewarded with success, while removing many of its hardships. The general appearance and productiveness of the land have, however, been far from improved by this process. It would be difficult to find a more desolate-appearing country than some of these pine woods after fire has been through them. The country examined may be, for convenience, divided into two

Introduction Samarco Mineracao S.A. is a Brazilian corporation jointly owned by S.A. Mineracao da Trindade (SAMITRI) and Utah International Inc., with 51% and 49% interests respectively. Headquartered in Belo Horizonte in the state of Minas Gerais, Samarco owns and operates an open-pit mine capable of producing 10 Mt/a (11 million stpy) of iron ore; a concentrator rated at 7 Mt (7.7 million st); a 12-Mt (13.2-million st) capacity pipeline transportation system; a 7 Mt (7.7 million st) filtering and pelletizing plant; and a harbor facility. The mine, concentrator, and initial pipeline pump station are located at Germano, near the town of Mariana, about 300 km (186 mi) north of Rio de Janeiro by air. The pipeline terminal, pellet plant, and harbor are at Point Ubu, 70 km (43 mi) south of Vitória the capital city of Espirito Santo State, and about 300 km (186 mi) by air east of the mine. The 396-km (246-mi) pipeline uses 508-mm (20-in.) pipe except for a 53-km (33-mi) section where 457-mm (18-in.) pipe is used to absorb and control slack flow through increased velocity in one of the areas along the route. Iron Ore Slurry The hematite iron ore concentrate produced at the Germano plant is processed by grinding the average 53% run-of-mine itabirite iron ore to -150 µm (100 mesh) for gangue liberation. It is treated further by cyclones to remove the 10 µm (1250 mesh) slimes to prepare the ore for flotation. During the multistage cationic flotation operation, the silica is reduced to make low silica (-0.9%) concentrate for the direct reduction (DR) iron-making process or to make normal silica (-3.5% +2.5%) concentrate for the blast furnace (BF) iron-making process. The concentrate then is reground further to meet the particle size requirements for pelletizing. The reground hematite concentrate is screened in closed circuit with the regrind mills for close control of the maximum particle size, not to exceed 3.5% +75 µm (200 mesh) for pipeline wear protection. Thickened concentrates at 70% solids are pumped to four 5-kt (5,510-st)(dry) agitated slurry storage tanks that hold the feed before it goes to the first pipeline system pumping station. Pipeline Capacity The pipeline system was designed to transport 12 Mt/a (13.2 million stpy) at 65% solids with an average minimum safe operating velocity of 1.5 m/s (5 fps). The pipeline will transport 5 Mt (5.5 million st) in 1982. The system, therefore, is moving the slurry in 13-kt (14,330-st) batches, dispatched at intervals to move 20 kt/d (22,050 stpd). In operation, the pipeline has exceeded its 93% availability design factor. Pipeline Facilities Pump station No. 1 is located at the Germano minesite 1 km (3,330 ft) above sea level. It has the following principal equipment: • four 5 kt (5,510-st) (dry) agitate slurry storage tanks; • two centrifugal charge pumps (one stand-by); • a 217-m (712-ft) safety loop; • seven mainline positive displacement triplex plunger pumps (189 m3/h, or 832 gpm, at 14.9 MPa, or 2,162 psi, maximum output pressure); • four corrosion-erosion spools; • a control and command center. "There is a general consensus that, in order to widen the utilization of Western Canadian coals, a major effort must be devoted to their transportation, utilization of fines, beneficiation and mining techniques. It is postulated that the concept studied extensively over the last four years at Alberta Research Council (ARC), and based on a combination of hydraulic mining, selective agglomeration with bitumen and/ or heavy oil, pipeline transportation and oil recovery from agglomerates, offers a particularly attractive solution to the problems associated with extraction, beneficiation, transportation and utilization of Western bituminous and subbituminous coals. Results of preliminary experimental work on the feasibility of pipeline agglomeration of metallurgical coal and hydraulic transportation of agglomerates are presented and discussed in the context of conventional agglomeration techniques in stirred tanks. IntroductionAlberta is endowed with enormous reserves of low-sulphur coals which could attract considerable attention of potential customers, but the remote location of this province handicaps its competitiveness on the world market. It is known that Alberta's Cretaceous, particularly metallurgical, coals differ significantly from their Carboniferous counterparts; current R&D work on indigenous coals should continue to expand in order to encourage overseas client s to use these coals more extensively.There is a genera l consensus that, in order to widen the utilization of Western coals, a major effort must be devoted to their transportation, utilization of fines, beneficiation and mining techniques."

"A new model for internal oxidation, as well as similar processes, has been implemented on computer. It is based upon a combination of random walk and cellular automata and is capable of treating 3-dimensional cases. To model diffusion, it utilises quantised units of matter. All steps of the process are included: nucleation, growth and coarsening. The effect of grain boundaries on diffusion as well as nucleation is taken into account. Further possible development is briefly discussed; especially the treatment of nucleation needs further consideration. IntroductionComplex diffusion-controlled processes may now be simulated on a routine basis when concentration varies along one co-ordinate only. One-dimensional simulations capture much of the information of interest but not all. For the case at hand, especially the spatial and the size distribution of precipitates, as well as the impact of grain boundaries, would be interesting information not accessible from 1-D simulationsSolving the full Fick-Onsager law in three dimensions does not seem feasible with the computers of today. In the model described in this article, random walk by quantised units of matter are considered. The model should be useful for a number of cases involving dispersed systems. With further development, it would indeed seem possible to simulate most types of phase transformations.Previous workWe have previously published two articles [1,2] on the new approach discussed in this work. In those articles we described the basic idea and showed, among other things, that very good agreement with an experimental concentration profile can be obtained, in a single-phase system, using independently assessed thermodynamic and kinetic data. Sulfur removal from high sulfur coal has several objectives including: a) reduction of the atmospheric load that contributes to the problem of acid precipitation; b) reduction of ash, which contributes to decreased energy transfer in boilers, as well as ash disposal; and c) alleviation of the social and economic dislocations reluted to uneven geographical distribution of sulfur in coal reserves. Cost in relation to the value of refined coal will govern the development of an emerging coal refining industry. Estimation of the premium paid by power companies for coal with a low sulfur content is a good estimate of the value that will be added as the result of refining. Estimates of premiums paid in 1984 are $28.65/t ($26 per st) for reduction of total sulfur from 3’% to 1% S and greater than $28.65/t ($26 per st) for removal below 1% sulfur.

Gipronickel Institute JS that is a Research and Development Centre affiliated to the worldclass Norilsk Nickel Mining and Metallurgical Company, and Outokumpu Technologies AB (Boliden Contech AB) have jointly developed the reconstruction project of Pechenganickel metallurgical operations using a two-zone Vanyukov furnace. The international expert group appointed by the Nordic Investment Bank has examined the project. The project financing should be partly executed by the Norway government. Current annual rate of sulfur dioxide emissions is 100 000 t. The aim of the project is to reduce it to 12 000 tpy. Pechenganickel Combine is owned by MMC Norilsk Nickel. Currently it produces nickel high-grade matte from sulfide copper-nickel concentrate with up to ten per cent MgO content. The existing production is in accordance with the following flow sheet: agglomeration û electric furnace smelting with matte production û converting in horizontal converters. Annual production capacity is about 36 000 t of nickel in high-grade matte. Converter gases report to sulfuric acid production. The principal results of studies on high magnesia materials smelting in two-zone Vanyukov furnace, engineering solutions, and technical and economical parameters are offered.

Batch laboratory-scale beneficiation tests were conducted on four high-iron phosphate samples. These samples included sedimentary ores (Tilemsi Valley, Mali and Tahoua, Niger), a sample from an igneous phosphate deposit (Matongo, Burundi), and a fine-grained phosphatic iron ore processing residue from Chile. The Matongo phosphate deposit occurs as a thick (up to 80 m) residual blanket of P205-enriched soil over solid parent rock (carbonatite and associated rock types). Although the Matongo deposit is an igneous deposit, ore from the deposit can be subjected to beneficiation treatments commonly used to treat sedimentary rocks. The beneficiation flowsheets designed to process these diverse ore types involve attrition scrubbing, size classification, and flotation. At the best flotation conditions tested, phosphate concentrates assaying 32.0%-39.0% P205 and 1.0%-1.5% Fe2O3, were obtained at 64.2%-82.2% overall P2O5 recoveries from run-of-mine (ROM) ores containing 9.2%-28.6% P205 and 5.9%-16.1% F,20,. A cleaner phosphate concentrate assaying 33.1% P205, 1.8% A1203, and 3.3% Fe2O3 at 53.4% overall P205 recovery was obtained from the phosphatic iron ore residue that originally contained 4.5% P205, 8.0% A1203, and 17.6% Fe2O3.

"Gob ventilation boreholes (GVBs) are widely used in underground coal mines for longwall gob degasification purposes. GVBs are often drilled within 10 to 30 m above the top of the coal bed into the fractured zone, completed with 20 cm (8 in.) diameter casing and 60 m of slotted pipe at the bottom. The purpose of this completion strategy is to create a pressure sink to capture the emissions before they can enter into the underground workplace. For GVBs to work effectively, they must be drilled close enough to the working areas to capture methane from the fractured zone while the setting depth must be kept above the caved zone to minimize the amount of ventilation air that is drawn into the GVBs. Well completion parameters are important for creating safe working conditions. In this paper, computational fluid dynamics (CFD) studies will be presented to analyze the effect of different practices for GVBs completion parameters for methane extraction, formation of explosive gas zones in the gob and methane concentrations at the longwall face and tailgate. Authors have identified the optimum completion parameters for GVBs, which can maximize the benefit and minimize fire and explosion risk. INTRODUCTION Coal mines may be considered gassy based on the presence of CH4. Gas from the mined coalbed or from rider seams above or below the mined coalbed can migrate into the gob and then potentially move towards the working areas. In longwall coal mines with high methane emissions, sufficient ventilation and additional methane control measures are usually required to reduce the methane concentration in working areas to below statutory levels. Several techniques or combinations of techniques are available to control the methane hazard. These may include mine face ventilation to dilute methane, coal bed degasification, nitrogen injection into the gob to render a methane atmosphere inert and the use of gob ventilation boreholes (GVBs). Longwall face ventilation and dilution alone can only handle methane emissions up to a certain amount. When methane emissions exceed the face ventilation capacity, additional control measures are required. Drilling horizontal or vertical methane drainage holes into the coal seams as well as gob ventilation boreholes from the surface into the gob area to extract methane are common practices. GVBs are usually drilled from the surface above the longwall panel ahead of mining. When the face moves outby the GVBs and the gob begins to form, methane production starts from the boreholes. It is important to control the performance of GVBs to maintain a safe working environment in the mine. The performance of GVBs depends on multiple factors, including borehole location, length and diameter of slotted casing, setting depth of casing above the coal seam being mined, wellhead vacuum pressure, and permeability of caved-fractured zones."

O objetivo deste trabalho é analisar a influência da solução aquosa com 0,03% de Álcool Polivinílico (PVA) como meio de resfriamento para o aço carbono SAE 1045, comparando-se os resultados de microestrutura e dureza do aço SAE 1045 como recebido e após tratamento térmico de têmpera nos meios de resfriamento: água, óleo e salmoura.

"Presently, there is a number of gold deposits which cannot be developed using the conventional technologies with acceptable economic indices due to low gold content, high depth of ore occurence and other conditions. For such ores, an innovation technology of underground gold leaching in the place of their occurrence is of special interest. The technology excludes ore mining and hoisting to the surface. This enables the production cost of 1 g of gold to be considerably reduced in comparison with conventional methods of gold recovery.The Maminskoye deposit oxidized ores were chosen as the subject of underground leaching because they are ideally suited for this purpose due to their composition and hydrological parameters. The ore reserves within the underground leaching block are 90, 000 t with 0.7 g/t average gold grade.An experimental system for underground leaching with a throughput of 15 cubic m solutions per hour was developed. A combined filtration-and-infiltration system of the ore massif development by holedrillingwhere pregnant solutions are air-lifted was worked out.The underground leaching flowsheet includes Au dissolution by chlorine-containing solutions, Au adsorption from solution onto active carbon, carbon concentrate ashing and calcine melting to produce Dore metal."

INTRODUCTION Most works on flotation of ions and precipitates from solutions have been summarized recently (1-3). Flotation is more desirable than thickening or centrifuging because of higher recovery, productivity, simplicity of apparatus and better economics in general. Electrolytic flotation that utilizes gases is more favorable than other flotation processes because of the following: higher dispersity of gas bubbles, low coalescence of the bubbles, possibility of gradual regulation of the dispersity and other parameters of flotation (4-5). Flotation from solutions is mostly based on the use of alkaline reagents as precipitants (5). Flotation from acid solutions is less common. We used multicomponent solutions with more than 2-3 components, unlike previous research methods. Acidic flotation allows recirculation of solutions to previous operations such as leaching, etc. REAGENTS FOR PRECIPITATION Electroflotation was studied over a wide range of pH with the addition of ferrocyanide, oxyquinoline, hydroxide and carbonate precipitants. In recent works (1,2,6,7) on flotation of Ni, Cu, Zn from alkaline solutions, mostly ferrocyanides were applied. Our choice was oxyquinoline because of the following: 8-oxyquinoline is a nonspecific reagent for many metals, it is readily soluble in acids and alkalis, oxyquinolates of the studied metals are in soluble compounds, the reagent works over a wide range of pH, it is widely available, oxyquinolate precipitates are stable when exposed to air, are readily floatable, and are easily converted to oxides of the metals by sintering.

A systematic study was made of new and old data on chemical activities in Fe-Pt alloys at elevated ternperatuves. Experimental results may be expressed in terms of the excess free energy using Least-squares analysis of the data gave the following values for the constants: for the temperature range 1130° to 1350°C, and tentatively to 155O°C, B = -3.326564 and C = 0.221051; for the temperature range 650" to 850°C, B = -2.555690, C = 1.762735, and D =0.097196. In the study of iron-containing silicate systems, it is sometimes desirable to have a direct experimental measure of the activity of iron in the system. The well-known solubility of iron in platinum, often a headache in experimental work on iron compounds under reducing conditions, can be used to advantage in this respect. If the activity of iron in an Fe-Pt alloy in equilibrium with the silicate is known as a function of the composition of the alloy, chemical analysis of the alloy will give a knowledge of the activity of iron in all of the phases in the system. The present study was undertaken in order to elucidate the characteristics of Fe-Pt alloys as iron activity indicators. This work is intended to tie together some previous work, which may be summarized as follows. Larson and Chipman1 determined the activity of iron in Fe-Pt alloys at 1550°C by equilibrating platinum metal with calcium oxide-iron oxide-silica melts of known iron activity. Compositions of the resulting alloys were determined by chemical analysis. A similar study was carried out by Taylor and ~uan,' who worked at 1300°C. They brought the Fe-Pt alloys into equilibrium with iron oxide under conditions of known partial pressure of oxygen, and thus, from the work of Darken and ~urr~,~ conditions of known iron activity. Compositions were determined indirectly, by following the change in weight of the sample. Sundaresen et el* used the electromotive force of cells in which the alloy formed one electrode in order to measure the activity of iron in the alloy at 650" and 850°C. These temperatures were chosen to be above and below the first-order phase transition which takes place upon the ordering of Fe3Pt and the second-order transition which occurs upon the ordering of FePt3. EXPERIMENTAL 1) High Temperatures. The starting materials used were thin platinum foil, about 0.002 mm thick, and Fisher Certified reagent ferric oxide, Fez03, which had been heated for 24 hr at 1000°C. An intimate mixture of 80-mesh Fez03 and platinum platelets was placed in a thin platinum foil envelope. The latter was suspended from thin platinum wires in the hot zone of a vertical-tube, platinum-wound furnace of the type described by Muan and ~sborn.~ A capillary gas mixer similar to that used by Darken and Gurry3 was used to prepare a precisely known mixture of carbon dioxide and hydrogen, which was allowed to flow upward through the furnace tube. The partial pressure of oxygen in contact with the sample was thereby fixed at a value which was calculated from the charts prepared by porter? Temperatures were measured with a Pt-10 pct Rh-in-platinum thermocouple, which was calibrated using the melting points of gold (1062 .@C) and diopside, CaMgSizOB (1391.5"C). Temperature control was maintained to within i3"C with a Geophysical Laboratory proportional controller, using the furnace resistance as the sensing element. Samples were quenched by passing a small current through the platinum suspension wires, allowing the sample to drop into a bath of dibutyl phthalate at the bottom of the furnace tube. Prior to chemical analysis the samples were washed with acetone and dried. 2) Chemical Analysis. It proved possible, in almost all cases, to separate the Pt-Fe platelets physically from particles of iron oxide. The platelets were dissolved in a small volume of aqua regia, evaporated to dryness, and redissolved to 0.1 M HC1. In order to determine iron in the platinum alloy potentiometrically, it is necessary first to remove the platinum. A 10-cm column of Amberlite IR-120 cation exchange resin in the hydrogen form provided separation quickly and quantitatively: The mixture of iron and platinum in 0.1 M HC1 was added to the top of the column, and washed with about 100 ml of 0.1 M HC1. Under these conditions, the iron, principally in the form of cations such as FeC1" and FeCl;, is held quantitatively in the uppermost centimeter of the column. There was reported in Bureau of Mines Technical Paper 5754/ a series of tests to determine the compressibility and bearing strength of specimens prepared from blocks of potash salt obtained from a mine near Carlsbad , N. Mex . The events leading up to the investigation were sketched in a foreword by George S. Rice , then chief mining engineer of the Bureau ( retired September 30 , 1937 ) ; this foreword also gives a discussion of the possibility of increasing the ultimate total recovery of the potash salt by " second mining" of pillars or by use of a longwall system . In June 1936 , Rice and the senior author visited Carlsbad with H. I. Smith , chief of the mining division of the Geological Survey , to observe mining then in progress and to discuss with the management of one of the mines records of convergence of roof and floor which they were obtaining . It developed that serious thought was being given to the possibility of roof failure resulting from shear at the faces of pillars . There was envisioned the danger of such cracks extending upward to water - bearing strata . Obviously , the simple compression tests of the potash salt then being made would throw no light on this question , and tests of assemblies of potash and roof salts would have to be made . In this connection it is to be remembered that in the mine no sharp division exists between the potash salt being recovered and the nearly pure halite which forms the roof . The interlocked crystalline structure is continuous , and there is merely a very rapid decrease in the proportion of sylvite in a short distance vertically . Figure 2 of Technical Paper 575 shows that two samples near the top of the salt being mined contained , respectively , 51 and 65 percent potassium chloride . Contrasted with this is an analysis of the roof salt given on page 24 of that publication , which showed only 3.6 percent potassium chloride . As the data given in Technical Paper 575 show , the roof salt is much less plastic than the potash salt . The immediate roof may then be thought of as a more rigid stratum of indefinite extent resting on and continuous with yielding supports and loaded uniformly at the rate of 900 to 950 pounds per square inch . Just what thickness of the salt should be considered as immediate roof is uncertain .

A U.S. Bureau of Mines study indicates over 200 million yd3 (153 million m3) of cinder resources occur in the Mount Washington Wilderness. No future demand for the deposits is anticipated. Based upon the geologic environment, the area is considered favorable for discovery of geothermal resources. INTRODUCTION The Mount Washington Wilderness, located about 32 mi (51 km) west of Bend, Oregon, contains 46,655 acres (18,881 ha) (fig. 1). A 6,300-acre (2,550-ha) addition on the northeast and east boundaries has been proposed by the Forest Service under RARE II. The U.S. Geological Survey made regional geological, geophysical, and geochemical surveys, and the U.S. Bureau of Mines examined, analyzed, and evaluated the economic potential of prospects and commercially important mineral resources.

The accompanying charts are presented to extend and improve a chart published under the title "A Chart to Provide Approximate Correction for Temperature and Deviation from Boyle's Law."' The applicability of this earlier chart was limited by the fact that it was based on the work of Burke and Keyes² and Kvalnes and Gaddy3 whose experiments were conducted with pure methane, the adjustments suggested for natural gases of higher specific gravity were unsatisfactory except within limited ranges of temperatures and pressures, and precise interpolation was difficult. The extensive work of G. G. Brown, D. L. Katz and their associates on the heavier natural gases has provided better bases for the needed corrections, and the present charts. which are based largely on their work, are intended to simplify the computations involved. The design of the charts has been changed by plotting temperatures as a function of pressure and correction factor, on a semilogarithmic or "ratio" grid, which gives fairly even spacing of the graphs and simplifies interpolation. Charts have been prepared for natural gas with specific gravities of .60, .65, .70, .75 and .80. The standard computation for use in estimating the quantity of gas in a reservoir may be expressed as follows: _ PA X 520 X VR ZT where: Q is the volume of gas at 60°F and one atmosphere pressure PA is the absolute formation pressure in atmospheres

Three years ago, when Sun Energy Development Co. (Sunedo) dedicated its Cordero mine in Wyoming, the company noted that its decision to venture into the coal industry was prompted by the need for domestic energy self-sufficiency. Now, as the energy situation assumes crisis proportions and the cry For coal intensifies, Sunedoo has begun a $21 million expansion program that will double the mine's productive capacity by the mid-1980s. When the Cordero come was originally conceived, Sunedoo obtained permission from permitting authorities to produce up to 11 million t/y (12 million stpy) of coal. But seeing opportunities in the coal market, Sunedoo returned to the agencies in 1976 and came away with permission to produce 22 million t/y (24 million stpy). Of that total permitted capacity, Cordero is expected to produce about 3.6 million tons (4 million st) this year.
