"Printed circuit boards (PCB) are particularly problematic to recycle because of the heterogeneous mix of organic materials, metals, and glass fiber. PCBs are found in almost every electroelectronic equipment and their recycling process involves a pre-treatment to separate the products which contain targeted metals. In this work, a physical processing involving sequential shredding and hanuner milling were used to obtain a comminuted sample from scrap printers PCBs. The thus prepared sample was analyzed for particle size distribution and by optical microscopy as well was subjected to pyrolysis, leachabilty and chemical composition determination by XRF. The metals concentration was determined by ICP and AAS. The PCBs have been also analyzed by SEM-EDS (micro-analysis and X-ray mapping). The results show that the studied PCBs are lead free, multilayer with 4 copper layers, have 45% of metals and the copper is present in significantly higher concentration than the rest of the metals.IntroductionThe global generation of e-waste (electrical and electronic equipment waste - WEEEs) grows at a rate of about 40 millions of tons per year [ l].Among this e-waste there are PCBs that are present in almost all electronic equipment. Their composition is heterogeneous and varies according to several factors, including: kind of EEE, when and where it was produced, fabrication technology [2], etc. In printers, the PCBs represent about 6.6- 8 wt.% [3].The PCBs treatment may include physical, pyrometallurgical, hydrometallurgical, ectrometallurgical and more recently bio-hydrometallurgical process. Normally there is a combination between these processes [2, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10].The diversity between the different PCBs composition complicates the recycling process since the composition of metal and others materials can vary according to the models. So characterization is an indispensable step before any processing of PCB to begin. Owing to the above said, the main goal of this work has been set to characterize representative samples of PCBs from printers through physical, chemical and microstructural analyses."

The Bureau of Mines found the chemical and galvanic corrosion behavior of the TZM and molybdenum-30 tungsten alloys to be generally equal or superior to that of unalloyed molybdenum in many aqueous solutions of acids, bases, and salts. Notable exceptions occurred in 1 [N] nitric acid, where both alloys corroded appreciably faster than molybdenum. In mercuric chloride solutions, the TZM alloy was susceptible to a type of crevice corrosion which was not due to differential aeration. The alloys were usually not adversely affected by con-tact with dissimilar metals in galvanic couple experiments, but the dissimilar metals sometimes corroded galvanically. Both alloys were resistant to substitute ocean water spray at 60° C.

The paper describes the new design criteria and control strategies for multi-density dense medium separation (DMS) circuits. The role of the multi-density separation is discussed, and it is emphasized that for many processing problems -related to minerals and coals -it may be very important to perform two or more cuts at different densities in order to obtain a remarkable improvement in quality of products, process efficiency and economy. The two-density separation by dense medium cyclones was generally performed using two dense medium plants in sequence. In contrast to the former technology, the multi-density separation can now be performed by using a single medium circuit composed of different interconnected medium sumps. The sumps, one for each density, are fed with different medium streams selected according to their density, size composition and content in non-magnetic contaminant in such a way that the rheological properties of the media are optimized. This new technology is based on dynamic systems to density the medium, on the size-density segregation of the medium in the cyclones and separating devices and on accurate control systems for the density, viscosity and stability of the dense media of the different sumps. The present paper reports on the theoretical basis for the new, advanced medium circuits and on the systems for the control of the densities and of the rheological properties of the dense media. A typical circuit for a two-density separation is also described, and some industrial applications reported and discussed.

Electrical resistivity surveys were conducted at three sites in Wyoming in an attempt to detect underground rubble zones in oil shale and to determine their size and resistivity contrast. The zones were detected at Rock Springs sites 4 and 5, but none were detected at Green River site 1. The resistivity of the rubble zones at sites 4 and 5 is greater than that of the surrounding rock. The zones at sites 4 and 5 are concluded to be roughly ovaloid in shape, with a horizontal diameter of 33 m and a vertical thickness of 24 m. Both rubble zones and the blasting that created them are considered to be centered at a depth of 24 m.

Magneto-flotation is a recently developing technology of mineral processing. This technology combines the traditional magnetic separation with flotation and provides a magnetic and buoyant force compound field to separate different minerals based on the differences of magnetism and floatability between useful minerals and gangue minerals. Magneto-flotation is applicable to separate ferromagnetic from nonmagnetic minerals, especially to separate magnetite from floatable gangue minerals. This magneto-flotation column is equipped with pulse electromagnetic field in the middle upper part, a bubble producer and upwell water inlet in the bottom. The pulse time of electromagnetic field in the column can be optionally adjusted and the maximum intensity of pulse magnetic field can reach 35mT. Pulse magnetic field can not only restrain magnetic minerals from entering into the froth layer, but also destroy the magnetic agglomeration to ensure a higher recovery and a higher concentrate grade. The results of experiments with magnetite show that pulse magnetic field has remarkable influence on flotation process. Compared with single flotation, magneto-flotation column can improve the recovery of magnetite by ten percent. After one time?s magneto-flotation processing, the grade of iron concentrate can increase from 65.4% to 69.5%, the content of silicon oxide in iron concentrate decreases from 7.4% to 2.8%, and the total recovery is above 96%.

The creep properties of metals have assumed increasing importance in recent years and many investigations have been made on various phases of the problem. In the past year the annual lectures of the Institute of Metals Division1 and the Iron and Steel Division2 were concerned with this subject, and are excellent reviews. For many years the creep properties of lead and lead alloys have been investigated at the Central Research Laboratories of the American Smelting and Refining Co., and it is hoped that the present paper will contribute knowledge of some of the factors that influence creep. Lead, being a metal that recrys-tallizes readily at room temperature, is an excellent material upon which to investigate creep phenomena because of the simplicity of the apparatus needed, and it might be expected that results would apply to some extent to elevated-temperature tests of other metals. Material The creep tests of this investigation were all made on high-purity lead (99.9998+ Pb) in which the only impurity that could be detected by spectrographic and chemical means was approximately 0.0001 per cent Fe. Flat strips, 0.750 in. wide by 0. 100 in. thick, were prepared by extruding 2-in. dia. cast billets at a temperature of 250°C. This gave a material of 2 to 3 mm. average grain size with a tensile strength of j.400 lb. per sq. in. when tested at a straining rate of 5 per cent per minute. With this extremely soft material, great care was necessary in handling the specimens, to avoid distortion and subsequent recrystallization. The creep tests at 30°C. were conducted in a constant-temperature room, specially built for the purpose in the basement of an office building in which there was no moving machinery, and no vibration was detectable under the most severe conditions of shock in the adjacent surroundings. The room was well insulated and heated electrically, control being by means of a de Khotinsky regulator operating a relay. Maximum temperature variation over a period of several years has been ± 1/2°C. Specimens of the extruded strip, 16 in. long, were used for test purposes with no reduced gauge section, thus eliminating any distortion due to machining. The method of clamping and supporting the specimens is shown diagrammatically in Fig. 1. The gauge marker for the measurement of extension consisted of an aluminum strip, 0.050 in. thick by 0.75 in. wide, one end of which was ground and sanded to a precise knife-edge and fastened to the specimen by suitable pins. After the strip was fastened in place a fine scratch was inscribed just below the knife-edge by means of a sharp teasing needle. Just below this gauge scratch a short vertical mark was made so that the same point could be located and read each time. The Warraua and Mount Poole Inliers form part of a discontinuous series of basement complexes in the northwestern corner of New South Wales. The Inliers comprise mainly clastic sediments of low metamorphic grade (Wonominta Beds) and minor sills, dykes and intrusives, particularly within the Mount Poole lnJier. The Warratta rnlier has received attention due to the occurrence of auriferous quartz-veins where reef mining activities havetaken place.The deformational history of the Warratta and Mount Poole Inljers is characterised by a continuous subhorizontally WSW-ENE directed compression. Deformation was associated with the development of NNW-trending and steeply west-dipping major faults, which bound or biscct the inliers. Chevron folds and a penetrative axial planar cleavage characterise the deformational architecture and document crustal shorterung of at least 40 per cent. In zones adjacent to the major faults and within pelitic and semi-pelitic uruts, a multiple deformational evolution becomes apparent, comprising two events (D1 and D2). Deformational structures considered significant in this study were the result of D1. Tight, northeast-vergent fold patterns FI' and associated axjal plane cleavage SI' and reverse dip-slip movements at major faults indicate early northeast-directed thrusting during D1. This was followed by dextral strike-slip deformation displayed by tight, recumbent folds, en-echelon fold patterns (F2'), a northeast trending crenulation cleavage (52'), and two sets of second order faults, the latter showing high angular relationship to the major faults. A final stage of the deformational history (D2) is represented by WSW-ENE trending kink folds (F2).Auriferous quartz veins, predominantly occurring within pelitic and semi-pelitic units, were generated syntectorucally during the early deformational event (D1) in the course of commencing development of cleavage (S2'). Vein textures point towards vein formation by repeated hydrauJjc fracturing and fracture healing (crack-seal process), and by simple accretionary vein growth. Folded pelite-dominated horizons, considered as low permeability units, are suggested preferential sites where migrating metamorphic Ouids pooled and were trapped, causing high fluid pressure.Hydraulic fracturing and vein precipitation was controlled by lithology and structural constraints such as cleavage.K-Ar dates of approximately 440 Ma (Benambran Orogeny) marking the peak of metamorphism, and coinciding with the development of cleavage S1', also indicate the time of auriferous quartz-vein formation. A period of deformation of at least 30 Ma is proposed for the development of cleavage S1', as constrained by K-Ar dating and the intrusion of a syntectonic granitoid, the Tibooburra Granodiorite.

Martin County Coal Corp. is located in Martin County, KY, in the Appalachian coal fields, near the West Virginia border. The company's total leasehold covers more then 133.5 km' (33,000 acres). Total annual production at Martin County Coal Corp. is currently 2.2 Mt (2.5 million st). In certain years, though, it exceeded 2.7 Mt (3 million st). About 45% of the annual production comes from two surface mines. The balance is produced from five underground mines. Martin County Coal's work schedule consists of two nine-hour shifts a day, 240 days a year. Topography The topography of the area is characterized by rugged hills and ridges and sharp V-shaped valleys demonstrating a cliff and slope topography. This topography consists of alternating benches of outcrop sandstone and slopes. The deep valleys have been carved out by many small streams in the area. These streams are contained within the steep slopes of narrow, twisted mountain ridges. The ridges are underlain by massive sandstones that, being resistant to erosion, create sharp, rocky morphology. The height of the hills above the valley floors ranges from 122 to 244 m (400 to 800 ft).

The purification of iron ores by means of hand magnets dates back more than 100 years. The first record in the United States Patent Office of a machine for the magnetic separation of ores shows that on Feb. 20, 1849, U.S. Patent 6121 was issued to Ransom Cook for improvement in electromagnetic ore separators. The patent covered the use of a revolving cylinder, or drum, with poles of electromagnets in its periphery for the purpose of separating magnetic oxide of iron from substances with which it might be associated, by causing the electrornagnets when revolving as component parts of the cylinder to be successively charged to take up the ore and discharged to part with it. Since this patent was issued the science and technique of magnetism have advanced more than most other fields of endeavor. The development of electrical machinery has required and obtained better and better magnetic materials, and the science of applied magnetism is as completely and satisfactorily developed as any branch of physics. Nevertheless, the patent of Ransom Cook, issued in 1849, comes close to covering everything that is now being applied in magnetic separation. The cynic may conclude that this proves the uselessness of modern science and may point in confirmation to flotation, which has grown in a few years, practically without benefit of science, to be the most versatile and useful of concentration methods. On more careful study, however, it appears that an accurate determination of the magnetic properties of minerals and their amenability to control by mechanical and heat treatments has not heretofore been made. The first essential, therefore, in the design of improved magnetic separators has been missing. In spite of this hiatus in scientific data inventors have been busy, and patents are on file covering mineral separations by means of nearly all known magneto-mechanical effects. In the present work, a ceramic foam elaborated with illitic clays was characterized. Properties related to density and compression strength were determined in samples fired at 1300oC, a temperature that permits the clay structure to generate and retain gases that will produce the foamy structure. The microstructure of the ceramic foam was studied by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy and mercury porosimetry. The results showed that the ceramic foam presents a bulk density of 0.38 g/cm3. The microstructure is formed by large open pores, quartz particles and vitreous phase.

The high reactivity of plutonium metal presents safety concerns related to material containment during fire scenarios. Plutonium metal is liquid at temperatures achieved under selected fire scenarios. The appearance of liquid plutonium challenges the corrosion resistance of the containment materials. However, by the in situ formation of intermetallic compounds, the plutonium metal can be stabilized as solid and the integrity of the containment vessels preserved. Studies have been conducted to demonstrate candidate materials, including lead, which can be introduced to the liquid-plutonium system and bind the corrosive liquid metal through the formation of intermetallic phases. The results of these investigations will be presented along with a discussion of the experimentally determined phase behavior for the plutonium-lead system.

The northeast-southwest trending ~25 km2 area incorporating Bald Hill is located 18 km northeast of Haast, and 5 - 7 km west of the Alpine Fault in South Westland, New Zealand. The geology consists of Greenland Group greywacke overlain by a Cretaceous-Tertiary sedimentary sequence and fluvio-glacial/marine terrace deposits of Quaternary age. Alluvial gold in Cole Creek, draining west from the summit of Bald Hill, may be derived either from vein mineralisation in basement rocks or from fluvial or marine terraces.   This paper focuses on the potential for in situ gold and base-metal mineralisation in sporadic, siderite-rich quartz veins that cut basement greenschist facies metasediments that have been overprinted by contact metamorphism.   Throughout the area, vein compositions are dominated by quartz and commonly feature zoned plagioclase. Alteration adjacent to veining within the contact aureole is dominated by 1 - 2 mm, coarse grained biotite, with small amounts of sulphide, and is pervaded by abundant siderite veinlets. Outside the aureole, wall rock alteration to veins consists of fine grained chlorite. Trace element XRF analysis has been used to ascertain base metal concentrations within samples of vein and alteration zones collected from throughout the area. Vein and alteration zone mineral assemblages containing <5 per cent sulphide, with low concentrations of As, Cu, Pb and Zn indicate low potential for gold and base-metal mineralisation in the Bald Hill region. Contact metamorphism of Greenland Group basement in the northeast of the region, is likely due to emplacement of a poorly exposed Cr- and Ni- enriched gabbro. The presence of biotite and andalusite in hornfelses indicate contact metamorphism occurred at temperatures >350¦C and at depths <10 km. Widespread vein distribution does not appear to be related to contact metamorphism or gabbro emplacement. Further research is required in order to establish the fluid source from which the veins were precipitated.

An inert particle -marker technique was developed to provide a direct measurement of grain boundary sliding during creep in tile interior of aluminum specimens. Groin boundary sliding in the interior as measured by this technique was found to be nearly the same or slightly lower than that measured on the surface. These data disagree with those obtained by the grain-counting technique developed by W. A. Rachinger. In tests where both techniques were used, the grain-counting technique gave large and variable values of grain boundary sliding. It is shown that the grain-counting technique gines erroneozcs results because of a preferred direction of grain growth during creep. A question which has long plagued those who study grain boundary creep is whether or not surface measurements yield a true representation of the deformation in the interior of a specimen. The first attempt to measure grain boundary sliding in the interior of a creep specimen was made by Rachinger.1 His technique is based on the measurement of average grain diameters, both parallel and perpendicular to the tension axis, followed by a calculation of the grain elongation from these measurements. The difference between total elongation, Et, and the calculated grain elongation, Eg, is considered to be the result of grain boundary sliding, Egb. Surprisingly large values of Egb/ Et (90 pct) came out of creep tests of pure aluminum at temperatures above 250°C (480°F), utilizing the Rachinger technique. This value is very much larger than the values of 8 to 15 pct measured by numerous investigators on the surface of a specimen. Values obtained on the surface by Rachinger, however, were consistent with those measured by the displacement of reference scratches. Chaudhuri and Grant2 repeated the Rachinger method for A1-10 pct Zn, and found the same large values of Egb/Et inside the specimen. However, from purely geometrical considerations, grain boundaries cannot slide without grain deformation; therefore, they questioned the validity of Rachinger's grain-counting method. Several authors2,3 have suggested that grain boundary migration during high-temperature deforma- tion may tend to restore the equiaxed grain shape in order to minimize interfacial energy. Rachinger4 tested this hypothesis and found that it did not hold. Grains elongated by rapid extension retained their elongated shape during a subsequent slow creep test. It appears that some other factor was responsible for the abnormally high values of .Egb/El. McLean and Gifkins5 made a survey of the effect of grain size on the ratio Egb/ Et, and proposed that the high values were the consequence of a small grain size. They failed to explain the low value of Egb/Et which Rachinger observed on the surface of the small grain size specimens, and suggested that the surface effect on the value of Egb/Et does not always occur. Many of the disagreements arising from Rachinger' s work stem from the fact that there was only one method of estimating grain boundary sliding in the interior of a specimen, and that method was of an indirect nature. If a marker line of some sort could be introduced inside of the specimen, one could make measurements just as clearly as on the surface. In the present investigation, the technique utilizes a layer of finely dispersed oxide particles inside the specimen introduced by hot press-bonding of two pieces of aluminum. Rachinger attempted a similar technique but with the oxide distribution he obtained there was so much interference with grain boundary motion that quantitative measurements were not attempted. MATERIALS AND EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE A) Materials Preparation. Two pure aluminum rods (impurity content in percent: Si, 0.002; Cu, 0.004; Fe, 0.002; Mg, 0.000: Zn, 0.000; V. 0.001) 1 in. diameter by 2 in. high were jacketed end to end in a 4-in.-diam cylinder of commercial-purity aluminum, 4 in, high, which had a l-in.-diam hole. The l-in.-diam mating surfaces of the two pure aluminum rods had been electropolished initially. This interface provided the oxide-film internal -marker plane after the hot press-bonding process, see Fig. 2. The composite was annealed for 1 hr at 900 F and hot upset more than 50 pct reduction in height in one step. The resulting slab was then rolled to 1/2 in. thickness; the pure aluminum test material was cut out and annealed at 900°F for 1 hr and cold cross-rolled to 1/8 in. thickness. The sheet was machined into specimens with a 1/8-in.-square cross section and a 1/2-in. gage length. The following heat treatment was given the specimens: Specimen 5A series: annealed at 1000°F for 5 min for grain-size control and then cooled to 700°F and held for 15 hr for stabilization.

The Kunigin-Marien-Hiitte is the only works in Germany where the Bessemer process is carried on by the direct method. The Besserner plant there, is arranged after the true English type, and the only resemblance to the Swedish mode of 'procedure is the dispensing with the use of spiegeleisen at the end of the "blow." In a new department of the establishment, started within three years, each of the converters is turned by means of a very neat and compact reversible engine, the steel shaft of which is an endless screw, which turns against the oblique cogs of a large wheel attached to the shaft of the vessel. An advantage which this arrangement possesses over the ordinary English hydraulic arrangement, is the fact that the endless screw suffices to turn the vessel, in either direction, any number of complete revolutions; while even the latest American improvements, so clearly explained to us by Mr. Holley at the opening session of this meeting, do not secure even one complete revolution without changing the angle of inclination of the hydraulic piston. In the endless screw arrangement, there being no limit to the working of the motor in either direction (no return-stroke necessary), the vessel can always, unless outside reasons demand the contrary, be turned around to any desired position by the shortest cut, whether backwards or forwards. Also, the diameter of the cogwheel attached to the vessel can be made sufficiently great to avoid all unevenness of motion. In the old department the motive-power still continues to be hydraulic. If reports be true, the new department produces spiegelized steel, for the manufacture of all-steel rails. But the old department is still, as from the beginning, devoted to the production by the direct method of steel for steel-headed rails. The most remarkable fact connected with this direct steel is the ease with which it welds to the iron 'of the rail-packets, although no borax or other fluxing agent is used to facilitate the welding. It is very rarely that an exception occurs, and an ingot or a charge is discarded by the rail-mill. The A J Parker Cooperative Research Centre for Hydrometallurgy has recently been established by a major grant from the Australian Commonwealth Government. The participating institutions in this centre are the CSIRO Division of Mineral Products, Curtin University of Technology, Murdoch University and the Chemistry Centre (WA). The Australian Mineral Industries Research Association is also a partner. Information is presented about the research activities of the Parker Centre, which are focussed on the solid/solution interface. Three research programs have been established in the areas of leaching, precipitation and surface processes (adsorption). The initial projects within these three programs are described. Details are also given of the Centre's education program which include honours degree training, masters and doctoral degrees by research, a masters degree by course work and workshops. The importance of collaboration with industry to the successful operation of the centre is stressed.

INTRODUCTION The Bunker Hill mine, located at Kellogg, ID, in the Coeur d'Alene mining district, has been a major pro¬ducer of lead-zinc-silver ore since 1887. Since its dis¬covery, it has produced over 25 401 171 t (28 million st) of ore from 20 to 25 veins and ore zones. The mine now covers an area of approximately 1.609 km (1 mile) in length and 0.8 km (1/2 mile) in width and extends from 1097 m (3600 ft) above sea level to 488 m (1600 ft) below sea level. Production is presently at a rate of 1542 t/d (1700 stpd). During 1965, a new stoping method, the Bunker Hill pillar system, was developed to enable the profitable mining of large, low-grade zinc ore bodies. The system was specifically designed to in¬corporate the Atlas Copco T26GH rubber-tired loaders. High productivities were achieved, and the method was adapted for mining the higher grade stopes where large timber square sets are utilized. This results in nearly 100% extraction. GEOLOGY The area encompassing the Bunker Hill mine lies immediately south of the Osburn fault, a major east-west striking, deep-seated strike slip fault which is the dominant structural feature in the Coeur d'Alene district. The Bunker Hill forms a series of veins and mineralized zones which occur as link structures, tension fractures, and breccia zones in folded, interbedded argillaceous quartzites of the Revett and St. Regis formations of the Precambrian belt series. The Rosco ore body is predominantly a zinc ore body above the Cate fault, which is presently known to occur from the 13 level. [elevation 488 m (1600 ft)] to the 1600 level [elevation 304 m (1000 ft) ]. These ore bodies are stringer zones with at least one dominant 1.8 to 4.5 m (6 to 15 ft) wide band of ore. They dip 0.09 to 0.26 rad (5° to 15°) steeper than the local 0.61 rad (35°) dip of the Cate fault, and also deviate 0.26 to 0.52 rad (15° to 30°) in strike from the Cate. Because of the flat dip and fractured weak hanging wall, normal cut-and-fill mining has not proven practical in this ore body. The mechanized timber methods described in the next section and the Bunker Hill pillar system are the mining methods successfully used. MINING METHODS While pillar stoping and mechanized cut-and-fill stop¬ing methods were obviously superior to the widely used timber stoping methods, as far as cost and productivity

Mining & Sustainability? A Paradox?! ? Production: gradually or exponentially increasing (giant mining) ? Ore Grades: gradually declining, ? Open Cut Mining: now widespread, likely to be sustained in the future though the long-term is hard to predict as new mineral deposits are likely to be deeper ? Waste Rock / Overburden: increasing rapidly, likely to be sustained in the future and closely linked to open cut mining, especially for coal and base metals ? Economic Resources: commonly increasing but some remain stable or gradually declining, future is linked closely to exploration, technology and economics; Increasing population, changing life style and technology development, ultimately result in sustainability in mining industry to hang in the balance and continue.

The Boddington Gold Mine, operated by Worsley Alumina Pty Ltd, is located about 100 km south of Perth and is one of the largest-producing gold mines in Australia.Multiple open pits are planned and several extend below the water table, through the deeply weathered lateritic profile and into the underlying Archean bedrock. Groundwater related mining problems, such as poor trafficability, wet floor conditions and slope instability began to occur early in 1990.The mine is located within Archean greenstones which are steeply dipping and faulted. Rock types include mafic to felsic volcanics, pyroclastics and sediments. These rocks have been regionally deformed and metamorphosed and are intruded by quartz micro-diorites and post-mineralisation dolerite dykes. Deep weathering has produced a typical oxide profile consisting of laterite, clay and saprolite zones underlain by weathered to fresh bedrock.
