High-water rapid-solidifying material, called æhigh-water materialÆ, is a new material developed by the authors over many years. The material can solidify nine times its volume of water into solid. The material is a fine kind of binder with special properties. The solidifying body of high-water material with water has quite a high early strength. The compressive strength of the material within three days can reach the same strength as conventional Portland in 28 days. One ton of the material can replace three tons of conventional Portland cement as binder. Some important achievements have been made in application of high-water material. In metal mines, based on the material, a new full-tailing cemented backfill technology has been developed. The characteristic of the new technology is that high-water material is used as binder and full tailing or alluvial sand is used as backfill aggregate. Because of the application of the new technology, major technical problems in backfill technology such as classifying of tailing, dewatering, transportation of pulp, low strength of backfill body, environmental contamination and so on, have been solved.

This paper introduces a technique for incorporating employee participation into the prevention component of a contingency plan. Companies sometimes focus so much energy on response that they forget to put resources into the basics of emergency prevention. The training program discussed here was designed to make employees part of the prevention system. Examples of training materials from the program are provided, a sample method for introducing risk assessment to employees is shown, and a strategy to address limited training time using short videos is explained. Methods for tailoring the training to any worksite and for specific risks are also included. The program is being designed and tested by the Pittsburgh Research Laboratory/NIOSH and employees of an underground coal mine. Examples are taken from the implementation of the program at the mine during the summer and fall of 1998. Results of the program evaluation and lessons learned during the implementation are discussed.

At Great Boulder Gold Mines Ltd. a number of attempts were made to remove water soluble copper and iron salts from calcined pyritic concentrates but variou~ problems arose and the methods were abandoned.A method of rapid washing has been developed and although some problems still exist a workable process was established which resulted in substantial savings of reagents used for the cyanidation of calcine.INTRODUCTIONIn the Great Boulder flowsheet crude ore is ground in cyanide solution, then thickened, agitated and subjected to two stage filtering. Secondary filter discharge is pulped with flotation circuit water, gassed with sulphur dioxide to precipitate soluble gold and activate pyrite, and after the addition of copper sulphate and xanthate, the pyrite and tellurides are recovered by flotation. Flotation tailings are thickened and pumped to the disposal area and concentrates are calcined in Edwards roasters. Calcine is washed to remove water soluble copper and iron salts and the washings pumped to the flotation section where the copper is used as an activator. The washed calcine is cyanided and returned to the crude ore circuit via the thickeners. The management and control of hazardous gases released into the underground environment are an integral part of coal mining. The power-generations stations at Appin and Tower collieries, with a combined electrical output of 94 MW, have been operating for some time and have demonstrated a technology that is able to exploit the available gas fully. Preface Pipe heading is a customary and proven technology for the underground installation of all types of piping. In over 90 % of all cases, straight pipe sections are used between shaft constructions since, e.g. this follows roadways or it is necessary from the operational aspect due to pipe control methods, e.g. to use a remote control pipe sensor or comparable control devices within sight from shaft to shaft. Frequently, a straight pipeline is impossible, and is replaced by a more or less spatial alignment due to surface conditions, structures in the ground or foundations. This situation applied for the construction of the Nebensammler Neuland (intercepting sewer) in Hamburg-Neuland for sections IV and V. The following paper is not intended as a description of the complete project. It deals mainly with the special features of this pipe heading, with what I believe to be its somewhat unusual route. "The unique properties of molten carbonates offer a large scope of applications in the field of energy. In effect, these molten salts are in the center of chemical and electrochemical reactions involving carbon and carbonaceous species, carbon dioxide and carbon monoxide, significant for energy generation or even for the production of fuels. Moreover, such media have also an oxidative character; they dissolve molecular oxygen and oxygen reduced species, O 2-, O22- and hypothetically o-, which may have an important role in waste treatments, homogeneous catalysis and synthesis of oxides. In this presentation, an overview will be given on the principal physicochemical properties of molten carbonates, before focusing on their main known application, the molten carbonate fuel cell (MCFC). Progress in other new fuel cells applications will also be analyzed, such as direct carbon fuel cell (DCFC), hybrid carbon fuel cell (HDCFC) and composite high-temperature fuel cells combining the features of MCFC and solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC). Afterwards, membranes for the separation and capture of C02 will be reviewed. Finally, other topics, as the oxidative coupling of methane in molten carbonates, will be briefly mentioned.IntroductionIn the thirty past years, the molten carbonate science and advances have been mainly dedicated to the understanding and optimization of the molten carbonate fuel cell (MCFC), which is still a major issue in the heart of a new vision of energy development. More recently, new topics related to other kinds of fuel cells (DCFC, composite SOFC/MCFC systems) and C02 capture have emerged and are concentrating important research and technological efforts. Moreover, new fields of implementation, related to molten carbonates, are also present: geology, glasses, production of nanocarbon particles etc. Considering other areas where this molten phase plays a major role, such as catalysis, waste destruction, surface treatment, it can be confirmed that the field of molten carbonates is very rich and offers many opportunities for fundamental science and competitive applications. Whatever their specific application, molten carbonates activity is associated to more efficient energy systems with low production of C02 and, in a prospective sense, to non-polluting energy using the value of C02. A recent event, the International Workshop on Molten Carbonates & Related Topics, IWMC201 I, held in Paris in 2011 , have put in evidence the importance to improve and exploit this investigation and technological domain."

"The property of Perron Gold Mines, Limited, lies in the southwest corner of Pascalis township, northwestern Quebec. It is approximately 12 miles northeast of the town of Val d'Or.This ground was originally staked by Jack Mathews of Amos in the spring of 1931. Shortly after staking, a quartz vein containing visible gold was uncovered on the south boundary of the property, about 400 feet south of the present shaft. With further prospecting, another spectacular goldbearing vein was found 3,000 feet northwest of the original showing. Subsequently, several programmes of exploration were carried out in search of the main ore zone. By 1933 sufficient ore was outlined to warrant sinking a shaft. The first ore was milled in 1934.Total production from the Perron mine from commencement in 1935 to 1944 has been 317,900 oz. gold having a value of $11,935,106. The average recovery a ton for 1944 was $9.01."

Homestake Mining Company has developed an estimating model, based on other closed projects, to audit and prepare new estimating plans. The results of recent closure audits reveal that the original budgets were often insufficient to cover the present expected expenses. Some of the major areas where technical challenges and costs are increasing include heap leach pile detoxification and rinsing, tailings dam closure, water management and treatment, abatement of contaminated soils, and many others. Risk and sensitivity analysis of each category will develop a level of confidence in the estimate and allow management to focus on the pertinent issues. Periodic audits of closure plans and costs throughout the life of mine serves to focus management attention on the complete costs of production. This will result in improved overall planning and management, and reduce the number of missed opportunities for savings.

THE fall meeting of the Petroleum Division of the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers will be held in Fort Worth on Oct. 19 and 20. The Texas Hotel will be headquarters. for this meeting, the technical sessions being held in the ball-room of the hotel. During the evening of the nineteenth a smoker will be held at the Fort Worth Club. In working out the program for this meeting, J. B. Umpleby, vice-chairman for production engineering, considered it especially desirable to offer as complete a discussion as possible of the subject of air-gas lift, its theory and practice, and its relationship to gas-oil ratios. The entire first day will be devoted to sessions on this subject. One session of the second day will be devoted to the use of electricity in oil-field operations and the second to the handling of congealing oils and paraffin. In addition to this program there will be one or more sessions when petroleum engineering research problems will be discussed. This meeting of the Division is primarily devoted to production engineering, as will be seen from the pro-gram. During one of the sessions, however, a brief review with forecasts of the production situation will be presented.

THIS CHAPTER of the Minerals Yearbook contains injury experience and related employment information for the coal-mining, coking, oil and gas, peat, and native asphalt industries in the United States for 1963. No attempt has been made to combine these data and present injury-frequency rates reflecting the mineral-fuel industries because the hazards of the separate industries are not comparable. Tabulations showing the trend of injuries and employment for all mineral industries are presented in Volume III of the Minerals Yearbook. COAL Injury experience of the coal-mining industry was improved slightly in 1963, as measured by the 2-percent decline in the Injury-frequency rate. Although the total number of fatal and nonfatal injuries increased 1 percent, the greater proportional increase of 3 percent in man-hours worked accounted for the improved frequency rate. Employment and injury data for 1963 are based on final data for anthracite mines and preliminary data for bituminous coal and lignite mines.

In this contribution, various ways of collecting EAF dust in EAF off-gas cleaning systems are reviewed, and generation of dust and concentration of zinc in the dust from various collecting devices are examined. Accordingly, recycling of EAF dust through source separation is discussed.

Traditional cycle theory would postulate that if you have a supply shortage relative to demand, the price will increase because buyers will incrementally increase the price they are willing to pay to ensure that their needs are fulfilled. As prices rise, more supply will be brought on and will eventually exceed demand. This supply excess will cause the price to decline as producers have to lower their prices to sell their goods. What is interesting is that cycles are simply volatility over time. Without the time factor, volatility simply goes up and down. When we add the time element, a cycle is created. This cycle can be big or small. In mining?s case, we are talking about a Super Cycle ? a big cycle. But a Su-per Cycle can be formed in two ways. It can form by either increasing the wavelength or the volatility. If these two elements are combined, a Super Cycle is formed. It is bigger than the normal cycle in terms of time duration and extent of volatility. A recent study (Fig. 1) conducted by Cuddington and Jarrett showed an interesting proof of Super Cycles and suggests that these cycles last between 15 and 30 years. So, what causes a Su-per Cycle? Is it a convergence of unrelated events or a consequence of related events? In a global community everything is related. Equilibrium theory would also take the position that a Super Cycle is a consequence of events.

A study was made of the instrumentation and technique of atomic absorption spectroscopy developed by Walsh of the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO), Australia.The method was evaluated for the determination of silver in lead sulphide concentrate. The precision of the procedure developed is equal to that of the uncorrected fire assay method and the accuracy is greater.Brief mention is made of the use of this technique for the determination of silver and other elements in ores and concentrator products.

Mining differs from the ordinary industry in that most industries and enterprises have an indeterminate life, apparently perpetual, and therefore, are not called on to replace the original investment. In mining, however, when the ore bodies are mined out, there is nothing left, The original capital investment must, therefore, be returned to the investor by the time that the profitable life of the mine is ended. When the operating company makes no provisions for perpetuating its life by investing a portion of its earnings in other properties, the usual procedure is to pay the investor, periodically, a dividend sufficiently larger than the risk return on his investment to enable him, if he reinvests this overplus at a safe rate of compound interest, to replace his original capital by the time the mine is exhausted. This overplus constitutes a return of invested capital. In estimating the value of a mining enterprise, the work leading to the final result may be divided into two parts. The first is the examination of the property to determine ore reserves, mining costs and profits, financial requirements and future prospects. Whatever conclusions are reached in this phase of the work depend on the experience, thoroughness and integrity of the examining engineers. The second is the calculations pursuant to the field examination.

This work evaluates and characterizes the impact of the support size and mining dilution of a block model in the operation and selection of equipment at an open pit mine. An exploratory analysis and geostatistical modelling of the grades assayed on a set of drill hole samples is performed, which allows constructing a grade model on a dense grid by means of a conditional simulation. The grades are then averaged to greater selective mining unit supports in order to proceed with the study and methodology. First, the metal-tonnage curves are used to analyse the loss of selectivity on the in situ resources caused by a change of support. Concerning the ore reserves and their mining sequence, defined in the pit optimization and analysis process, the same curves prove that the loss of selectivity is more accentuated. Second, the importance of the block boundary dilution produced during mining operations is assessed. Its value depends on the amount of ore in contact with waste, on the loading error of the equipment and on the ore loss/waste dilution criterion assumed by the planner. The dilution percentage and the differences between waste and ore grades become higher when the block size decreases. For these reasons, considering the dilution in the production plans makes mining a small support more constraining. An adequate delimitation of the orebody can improve the mining selectivity, leading to greater income. Finally, a study of the increase in mining cost that provides a zero difference in NPV between the different block size options is carried out, in order to determine the maximum increase in mining costs for which it remains profitable to mine at a smaller block size. "EH-pH diagrams are useful tools in understanding how mineral surfaces react in solution and particularly how aqueous conditions can be changed to enhance mineral leaching processes. Successful application of these diagrams, however, requires that several considerations be kept in mind to prevent what had been termed as “gross errors” in their calculation and use. In this paper, the aqueous Cu-S system is used as the basis for explaining the mass-balanced method of calculating EH-pH diagrams with the STABCAL thermodynamic equilibrium software. A breakdown of the Gibbs’ Phase Rule and how it is used in STABCAL to modify the diagrams is included. The methodology was applied to the aqueous Cu-As-S system, and resulting diagrams were compared against examples of those generated using the predominant-ion method. The complexity of such diagrams increases with every additional component, and competition between species becomes more apparent, as can be seen by curvature in the resulting mass-balanced diagrams. The complete diagram for enargite (Cu3AsS4) is shown. It compares well with spectroelectrochemical measurements from Raman spectroscopy and cyclic voltammetry studies.IntroductionInnovation in the field of processing arsenicbearing copper ores has been of particular interest. Copper arsenic sulfosalt minerals such as enargite (Cu3AsS4) and tennanite (Cu12As4S13) are now frequently prevalent in ore bodies as the oxide and easily leachable sulfides become harder to find. These minerals, unless pretreated somehow, concentrate in copper sulfide flotation processes, in turn concentrating the arsenic levels. Increasing environmental restrictions on arsenic content for smelters makes the hydrometallurgical processing of these concentrates more favorable. While enargite is considered one of the more refractory copper sulfides, more so than chalcopyrite (CuFeS2), there are still several methods, both industrially proven and in development, that are capable of processing these ore types. Alkaline sulfide leaching can be used as a pretreatment method to solubilize arsenic selectively (Delfini et al., 2003; Anderson and Twidwell, 2008; Tongamp, Takasaki and Shibayama, 2010a, 2010b), or the entire metal content can be leached using acid-type leaches such as acidified ferric sulfate (Dutrizac, 1981; Hackl et al., 1995; Klauber, 2008), or the chloride assisted, CESL (McDonald and Muir, 2007) or nitrogen species catalyzed (Anderson, 2003) processes can be used.As development of these leaching technologies proceed, it is also important to develop an understanding of the mineral thermodynamics. To date, there are numerous studies on the Cu-Fe-S-H2O system, particularly as it relates to chalcopyrite leaching, yet few studies have done on the Cu-As-S-H2O system. Computer-generated EH-pH diagrams have been employed to illustrate the importance of thermodynamic calculations in providing insight into such a system."

Arsenic (As) removal behavior from Changgoon mine tailings was investigated using Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans (A. ferrooxidans) in well-controlled batch reactors by varying pulp density (0.5?4%, pH=1.8, temp=30oC), reaction initial pH (1.8?2.2, pulp density=0.5%, temp=30oC), and temperature (25?35oC, pulp density=0.5%, pH=1.8). The initial concentration of As in the mine tailings used for bioleaching tests was about 30000 ppm, and the size range of tailings used in this study was 63?74 µm. The reaction speed and initial cell concentration were fixed to 150 rpm and 107 cells/mL, respectively. To complement leaching experiments, pH, oxidation/reduction potential (ORP), and amount of ferrous/ferric ions in leachate were analyzed. Scanning electron microscopy and x-ray diffraction analyses were also conducted for the samples before and after leaching to see if any morphological and compositional changes in tailings took place during leaching process. The As leaching efficiency increased with decreasing pulp density, decreasing pH, and increasing temperature in the presence of A. ferrooxidans. Specifically, no significant change in As removal rate was observed when pulp density d 2% while the removal rate dramatically decreased at pulp density of 4%. Regarding pH effect, As removal rate was much more enhanced at lower pHs (i.e., 1.8 and 2.0) compared to pH 2.2. Increasing temperature was observed to tend to enhance As removal rate, showing about 20% enhanced leaching rate under 35oC compared to 25oC and 30oC at the elapsed time of 5 days. The results for As removal behavior at different conditions (i.e., pH, temperature, pulp density) were consistent with the change in pH, ORP, and ferric ion concentration in leachate, showing greater removal rate at the condition with lower pH, and higher ORP and ferric ion concentration in leachate. Furthermore, decreasing removal efficiency was likely in part due to the extent of the formation of by-product (i.e., jarosite) of ferric ions.
