The low -temperature tensile and creep behaviors of single crystals of copper were evaluated and analyzed in such a manner as to provide an estimate of the separate contributions of short-and long-range stress fields to strain-hardening. Furthermore, the average force-displacement diagram for thermally activated intep-section of two dislocations was estublished. This diagram plus a knowledge of the variation of dislocation spacing and the long-range back stresses with strain permits on accurate prediction of creep rates. The calculated activation energy for intersection under conditions of a constant strain rate increases linearly with the absolute tempevatus-e as required by theory. AN understanding of the detailed mechanisms for strain hardening constitutes one of the principal unsolved problems in dislocation theory. Two major models for strain hardening have been advanced in the past. The one that has received greatest attention assumes that strain hardening arises exclusively from long range interaction stresses between moving dislocations and piled-up arrays of blocked dislocations on the slip planes. This type of interaction was first announced by Taylor' who revealed that the back stress fields due to a simple uniform array of positive and negative dislocations entrapped in the deformed crystal would result in parabolic hardening. Shortly thereafter Andrade and Henderson" demonstrated that the strain hardening of fcc single crystals was not parabolic, as previously thought, and finally it was recognized that a typical stress-strain curve consisted of three successive stages of deformation, niz., the easy glide, Stage I, linear hardening, Stage 11, and the parabolic hardening, Stage 111, ranges. The objections to Taylor's somewhat na'ive model, which were presented so forcefully by cottrell; were largely removed by the more realistic details incorporated in Mott's analysis.5 But because Mott's theory for hardening via long range stress fields gave somewhat analogous results to that of Taylor's (inasmuch as it also predicted a parabolic rate of strain hardening whereas the observed rate of strain hardening in Stages I and I1 were linear), it was not widely accepted. Major consideration was therefore given to models, such as those which were advanced by Friedel and seegere that were formulated for the ad hoc purpose of yielding linear rates of strain hardening. The second major thought regarding strain hardening is based on the concept that it arises principally from short-range stress fields due to the interactions between intersecting dislocations. Cottrell and stokes7 showed, several years ago, that the constancy of the flow stress ratio at two temperatures regardless of the strain was inconsistent with the concept that strain hardening arose exclusively from long-range back stresses. The argument that strain hardening was primarily due to local interactions of intersecting dislocations was presented in considerable detail by asinski.' Extending Basinski's method of analysis of the intersection process, Mitra, Os-borne, and dorn recently demonstrated that indeed the strain hardening in aluminum single crystals arises principally from local effects coincident with intersection; however, these conclusions, too, must be modified, as will be shown later in this report. The present investigation, devoted principally to the low-temperature deformation of copper single crystals, was initiated in an attempt to ascertain whether or not the same conclusions arrived at for aluminum also apply to metals, such as copper, which have much wider stacking faults. It was soon observed that the strain hardening in copper could not be attributed exclusively to local effects between intersecting dislocations. Previously no analytical method for arriving at the possible simultaneous contributions of long-range stress fields and localized forces on intersecting dislocations was available; consequently, the separation of these two factors could not be readily accomplished. In the present report a method of estimating the separate contributions of each of these two factors to strain-hardening will be presented. The authors will show that both long-range stress fields of the type contemplated by Seeger and Friedel as well as short-range forces of the type considered by Basinski are responsible for strain hardening in fcc metals at low temperatures. This method of analysis also accounts for, in a satisfactory way, the effect of stress, temperature, and strain on the creep rate under constant stress. Furthermore, in the course of presenting their methods of analysis the authors will also reveal the rather complete agreement of their experimental data with the concepts of the theory for thermally activated intersection of dislocations. Abstract-To evaluate geochemical aspects of sheared zones, 35 samples of granitoid rocks from an area of shearing >5 km2 at Derehamzeh, Iran were studied geochemically. Relatively unaltered samples within the shear-zone area average 38 ppm Cu, 1.45 ppm Mo, 4.6 ppb Au, 0.21 ppm Ag, <1 ppm Re, 46 ppm Zn, 28.5 ppm Pb, and 0.34% S. Bleached, hydrothermally-altered samples are anomalous in Cu (>896 ppm), Au(>59.5 ppb), Ag(>24.4 ppm), Re(>1.28 ppm), Zn (>164 ppm), Pb (>218 ppm), and S(>0.9%). Some samples from bleached sheared zones that are highly anomalous in Cu (5000 ppm), Mo(23 ppm), Ag(74 ppm), and Au(200 ppb) are characterized by a typical sericitic alteration assemblage consisting of sericite, pyrite, chalcopyrite, and granular quartz. The main anomalous zone extends over about 0.4 km2 in the southern part of the area. The strong Cu- Mo-Au-Ag association in the sericitic shear zones suggests a possible relationship to porphyry copper mineralization, similar to that found in northern Chile. Further studies on drill-core samples in the southern sericitized shear zones are required to determine if more extensive porphyry-type sulfide mineralization is present.

With processing a variety of orebodies at Glencore’s Ernest Henry Mining (EHM) has come a changing mineralogy and more complex requirements for treatment in the concentrator. From mid-2013 and into 2014 the grind size required to achieve sufficient mineral liberation for production of a quality concentrate has reduced significantly. What was once a final P80 of 35–45 microns was forced to 20 microns. This has necessitated some creative changes to the flow sheet that previously had a 937?kW Vertimill regrinding a rougher concentrate to 40 microns. EHM is able to utilise an existing M10 000 3 MW IsaMill previously used for magnetite processing, to provide a quick convenient solution without large scale capital expenditures. Operating the Vertimill and IsaMill in parallel in closed circuit was successful at reducing the P80 of the regrind circuit to below 20 microns which increased the final concentrate grade by four per cent. This circuit and intermediate circuits used are discussed. "NVI Mining’s Myra Falls Operation is a forty year old underground mining operation feeding a 4000 mtpd concentrator.The current Mill, built in 1985, was designed to process a large massive sulphide ore-body. This ore-body, known as the “HW”, contains about 50% pyrite. Value minerals are chalcopyrite, and sphalerite, with precious metals occurring in all mineral types.By 1997, mining of a new ore-body, known as “Battle-Gap” commenced. Mineralogically complex, the new orebody contains about 15% pyrite, copper minerals including primary chalcopyrite, secondary bornite, chalcocite and tennantite, combined with increased galena and sphalerite.Flotation performance generally decreased with increasing amounts of Battle-Gap ore types, with both copper concentrate quality (increased lead and zinc content) and copper recoveries being affected.Following significant metallurgical testwork, a new fully sequential copper-lead-zinc flotation flowsheet and reagent scheme was developed.This sequential flowsheet was progressively installed and commissioned during 2006.Copper concentrate lead and zinc smelter penalty contents have been reduced by some 40%, whilst increasing copper recovery by 10%.INTRODUCTIONNVI Mining operates the Myra Falls Operation near Campbell River on Vancouver Island, BC. The complex has been in operation since 1966 with mining being predominantly underground. "CuInS2 thin films solar cells have drawn much attention for their low-cost, stability and high conversion efficiency. The electrodeposition of Cu-In precursor films, as the first step in making CuinS2 solar cells electrochemically in the air-and water-stable ionic liquid based on choline chloride/urea eutectic mixture has been investigated at constant potential. Compared with aqueous electrolytes, the large electrochemical window as well as the high thermal stability of this ionic liquid allow the direct electrodeposition of Cu-In precursor films. Then the precursor films were sulfuretted in a tube furnace at different sulfurization temperatures to optimize the films properties. The films obtained were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscope (SEM), energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS).IntroductionCuInS2 is one of the most prospective absorber materials for low cost thin film solar cells, with a high conversion efficiency that exceeds 32% in terms of theory and nearly 13% in laboratory level [1-2]. In addition to its long-term stability, CuinS2 has a band gap energy Eg ranging from 1.3 to 1.55 eV and an optimal optical absorption coefficient reaching 105cm-1 [3-4]. CuinS2 thin films have been prepared by several methods such as spray pyrolysis [5-6], r.f.sputtering [7], vacuum evaporation [8-9] and electrodeposition. Comparing with vacuum methods, electrodeposition has lots of advantages such as less energy consumption, preparation big area thin film, stable system and enabling cheaper films.The electrodeposition of most technologically important metals has been shown to be possible from a wide range of ionic liquids. These ionic liquids are currently applied in a wide variety area. It is reported that the cell efficiency of chalcopyrite absorber layer (CIS, CISeS, and CIGS) via an electrodeposition route in laboratory condition has reached 11.3% [10]. Copper and indium alloy film is regarded as important precursor for the production of compound semiconductors with sulfur. The electrodeposition of the alloy film from room temperature ionic liquid (RTIL) has not been widely investigated. Only few alloy films, such as ZnTe, CdTe, GaAs and AlSb have been electrodeposited."

This paper describes a methodology used to develop a numerical model for the study of particulate suspension rheology. Initially, Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) models of different rheometer geometries were tested with both a Newtonian fluid (water), and a non-Newtonian Herschel-Bulkley slurry. Rheograms were reproduced from these models and compared to experimental values. Once a single-phase model had been validated, a coupled model combining CFD and the Discrete Element Method (DEM) was created. Two open source software packages were chosen. CFD is implemented using Open FOAM®, and DEM using LIGGGHTS. These two different codes were coupled via another program called CFDEM. This coupled model is currently capable of modeling spherical particles in a suspending liquid. DLVO forces have been included in some models to account for inter-particle forces due to the surface charge on the particles. The coupled model is currently being validated. OXYGEN has frequently been considered responsible for phenomena in the metallurgy of cast iron which are not sufficiently explained by the presence of other elements. Oxygen and oxides have been regarded as critical factors, particularly for the solidification process, and specifically in the formation of graphite. However, the evidence for an influence of oxygen has mostly only been indirect or qualitative. Furthermore, quantitative data on the oxygen content of cast iron presented in the literature have often been less conclusive as being apparently determined with insufficient regard for the difficulties associated with the sampling and analysis. These problems, experimental and theoretical, have been studied in this investigation. An attempt is made to bring the views on the soluble amount of oxygen in cast iron on a level with the present understanding of the thermodynamics of these types of alloys. Although there are no experimental data on the complete multicomponent cast-iron alloys some conclusions have been drawn from investigations on simpler systems. The order of magnitude of the solubility of oxygen in cast iron is considered in the first part of the paper. The second part deals with the oxygen content actually present under practical conditions. First the possible sources of errors in sampling and analyzing methods are examined. Finally some observations on the oxygen and oxide content of malleable iron during the production process are made. THERMODYNAMICS OF OXYGEN SOLUBILITY When cast iron is saturated with oxygen the saturation phase is essentially carbon monoxide or silicon dioxide depending upon the composition of the iron, the temperature, and the rates of formation of the oxides.* The latter occurs accordiw to the O + C = CO, Kc0 - a COa J 20 + Si = SiO2, Activities are used here instead of weight pct concentrations, since activities are believed to show more sensitively the effects of the interaction of all the alloying elements. Calculations involving activities are, however, seriously hampered by lack of experimental data on the interactions between the components encountered in the multi component cast-iron system Fe-O-C-Si-Mn-P-S- and so on. Coal mining is more widely distributed throughout the United States than is generally known, as 30 States are credited with having coal mines. In 1919 twenty-three of these States each produced at least a million tons of bituminous coal, and all the States produced about 560,000,000 tons. In addition, Pennsylvania produced about 85,000,000 tons of anthracite. Twenty-eight States have regulations prepared by commissions or have enacted laws governing the operation of coal mines. Pennsyl¬vania has separate codes for the anthracite and bituminous fields. The codes may be classified as follows: Twelve distinctly coal¬mining codes; eight codes that are essentially coal mining, but also apply to other mines; five codes that are subdivided, referring partly to coal mines and partly to other mines; and four codes that are essentially metal mining, but apply in part or in whole to coal mining. The first State to have a coal-mining law was Pennsylvania, which enacted a law, for Schuylkill County only, in 1869. The first State to enact a coal-mining law governing all the coal mines in the State was Illinois in 1872, followed by Ohio in 1873. Pennsylvania in 1879 enacted a law for anthracite mines only, but did not enact similar laws for bituminous mines until 1577. At least 10 other States enacted coal-mining laws between the years 1870 and 1890. Before 1890 electricity was little used in coal-ruining operations and therefore practically no provisions governing the installation, inspection, or maintenance of electrical equipment were made in any of the laws enacted up to 1890. In the law of Colorado, approved April 8, 1885, there is a reference to the use of telephones, probably the first reference to electrical equipment of any kind in a State-mining code. Most of the mining codes have been changed from their original form by amendment or by complete revision. Rotation diffraction patterns of Cu-4.84 wt pct Si polymystalline samples were taken during the course of isothel-ma1 affing of the suPersaturated a phase, a diffraction spots were obserzled to streak during the initial stages of aging, and this streaking was similar to the streaking of a spots observed earlier by Barvett with deformed super saturated samples of the same composition. Although it was suggested that stacking faults were the sole cause of styeaking in the deformed samples, the present study has shown that plates with one small crystallite dimension can also contribute to the streaking when there is lattice coherency across close-packed planes. THE decomposition of the supersaturated a phase in Cu-Si alloys has been reported to occur by means of both thermal and stress activation.1-4 According to the Cu-Si phase diagram,3 Fig. 1, the supersaturated a phase (fcc) is expected to transform during aging by the precipitation of the y phase. The results of earlier studies2,4 have indicated that metastable k phase (hcp with nearly ideal close packing) forms initially at temperatures below the eutectoid temperature, after which the k transforms to the a and y phases. Hof-mann et al.4 have proposed a metastable version of the phase diagram, showing the approximate boundaries for k formation below the eutectoid temperature. In view of the close-packed nature of both the a and k phases, it is essential to consider the role assumed by stacking faults in the transformation. Streaking effects have been reported by Barrett 1 in the rotating crystal X-ray patterns of strained Cu-Si alloys and were attributed to stacking faults rather than particle size effects. This deduction was based on the observation that streaks in the diffraction patterns did not occur tangent to the 220fee Debye ring. It is known that the atom movements involved in faulting leave some X-ray reflections unaffected while others are broadened,&apos; and, in particular, it has been shown that faulting will not cause streaking of 220fee reflections tangent to the 220fee Debye ring as would be expected if all the reflections were broadened.&apos; The formation

The U.S. Bureau of Mines implemented an inte¬grated static and geophysical monitoring program in a southern Wyoming mine to study changes in seismic wave propagation properties in roof strata. The purpose was to develop techniques to assess roof stability problems. The work consisted of record¬ing deformation and stress histories and calcu¬lating seismic velocity profiles. In addition. geology and roof conditions were mapped; the in¬struments were initially installed at the develop¬ment face; monitoring continued until the mecha¬nized retreat face retreated within 60 m of the instruments. Mining geometry consisted of a three-¬entry gate system using 5.2-m-wide pillars at depths of 426 m. Results were analyzed using stan¬dard history plots, velocity tomographs, and numer¬ical modeling techniques. Changes in velocity. frequency, amplitude, dynamic elastic modulus, and dynamic Poisson&apos;s ratio were related to roof defor¬mation, fracturing, and support requirements. A reduction in seismic velocity of 17 pct occurred after 60 mm of roof deformation following installa¬tion of supplementary support. Static measurements revealed significant dilation in the mine floor, spreading to the pillar and the mine roof. Failure was initiated in the floor as a result of uniform pillar penetration.

Introduction Between 1903 and 1905, W. Mclnnis, of the Geological Survey of Canada, made a micrometer traverse of the Kawinogans (Crow) river from Kapkichegimaga lake to its junction with the Otoskwin river. He reported that a belt of Keewatin rocks, 1 to 4 miles wide, was exposed along the course of the river for 17 miles east of Kapkichegimaga lake. Prospectors and exploration companies paid little attention to the mineral possibilities of this belt until the summer of 1928 when, with the adoption of airplane transportation, the area became readily accessible. Within a short time widespread interest was aroused by the announcement of attractive finds, and a mild rush followed. During the winter months, hundreds of claims were staked on either side of Crow river for 12 miles east of Pickle lake. In the summer of 1929, much of this ground was systematically explored and a considerable amount of development work was done on the known deposits.

The dispersion characteristics of apatite and magnetite minerals have been assessed based on zeta-potential measurements, using various inorganic and organic reagents, namely sodium silicate, sodium tripolyphosphate, sodium hexametaphosphate and lignin sulphonate. These results highlight that apatite is dispersed to a greater extent vis-à-vis magnetite. Further, the dispersion efficiency of the phosphate reagents is better than that of sodium silicate or lignin sulphonate, for both apatite and magnetite. Batch flotation tests on a high phosphate magnetite ore from Kiruna indicate that higher apatite recovery with minimum phosphorous loss to the magnetite fraction can be achieved using sodium silicate as a dispersant. Although comparable dephosphorization can be attained with lignin sulphonate dispersant, the recovery of magnetite in the non-float fraction is lower, possibly due to the adverse synergistic effect of this organic reagent with the Atrac collector, resulting in the flotation of magnetite. The high intensity conditioning of pulp for up to 30 min resulted in better apatite flotation with <0.015% phosphorous in the magnetite product.

"IntroductionIn its investigations relative to reducing the hazards of carbon monoxide poisoning, the Bureau of Mines recently had its attention drawn to a compound2a sold under a trade name for which claims are reported to have been made regarding its efficacy in reducing that type of poisoning in automobile garages. Accordingly, some of the product was obtained and analyzed for its power to absorb, oxidize, or destroy carbon monoxide; and the results are herein reported.Description of ""Compound"" (quoted from manufacturer's circular)While the circular does not actually state that the ""compound"" protects against carbon monoxide, the inference is therein, because each of the two following quotations is below these respective headings; ""Carbon-Monoxide Poisoning,"" and ""Chronic Gassing Among Garage Workers.""The ""compound"" holds chlorine and oxygen gases in solution with formaldehyde, which unites with the hydrogen to form hydrochloric acid., giving an over-supply of oxygen which burns up carbon just as a piece of wood is burned in the fire. The formaldehyde in the composition of the ""compound"" is a great affinity for ammonia and hydrogen sulphide."

Originally, the term solution mining applied to a dissolution, washing, or "brining" of soluble salts such as halite (common table salt), potash or trona. After the mid-sixties, however, the definition has been expanded to include heap and dump leaching, in-place (in situ) leaching, removal of oil from tar sands, extraction of sulfur from deep wells by the Frasch process and the recovery of metalliferous solutions from geothermal sources. Solution mining is also known as borehole, non-shaft, or chemical mining; the extraction of soluble mineral values from a variety of ores using appropriate solvents and chemicals. Solution mining frequently involves chemical changes; for example, copper usually goes into solution as copper sulfate, gold and silver as a cyanide compound, and uranium as a sulfate or uranyl tricarbonate. The valuable constituent is removed from the solid body of the ore by mass transfer to a aqueous solution.

PREVIOUS studies1 by the writer dealing with the embrittlement of copper have been concerned with the behavior of various pure and deoxidized coppers when exposed to an oxidation-reduction cycle, and the consequent evaluation of these materials on the basis of their resist-ance to this action. No attention was devoted to the variations in pene-tration of embrittlement with time, when these copper materials are exposed to a strong reducing gas, such as hydrogen, nor to the variations in oxygen penetration, with time and temperature, into the "pure" coppers. The cause of the embrittlement is the reduction of the oxygen in the copper by the hot reducing gas, so that a consideration of time, tempera-ture, the occurrence of hydrogen and oxygen must be given. For the purpose of differentiating some of "the involved factors, the present work may be divided into two separate series of experiments. The first of these deals with the oxidation of purified coppers under various conditions and then the subjection of these to a standard hydrogen treatment. The second series concerns the reduction, under different conditions, of tough-pitch coppers of several oxygen contents. The resulting data will give the rates of oxidation, and of reduction, for the materials involved. The first series of experiments will reveal how rapidly copper may become oxidized, while the second series will indicate how rapidly embrittlement will penetrate into an oxygen-containing copper when it is exposed to hydrogen at different temperatures.

SYNOPSIS An analysis was made of records of accidents involving Bantu mineworkers and which resulted in either minor injuries or hospitalizations to determine patterns in underground accidents from which to formulate priorities in accident prevention in gold mines. The results showed that: (i) specific labour categories, such as inexperienced men, are exposed to certain types of hazards the extent of which warrant the separate design of safety programmes to meet their specific needs; (ii) the systematic study of minor accidents provides a dependable source of. information of which safety departments could make greater use in their efforts to control and prevent mining accidents.

In choosing solid oxide electrolytes for use in the measurement of thermodynamic quantities at high temperatures, the two most important criteria are the values of the partial ionic and electronic conduc tizities. Measurements of these conducticities have been made for some Group IVA oxides and solid solutions of these oxides with CaO, Y2O3, and La2O3. The total conductivities as a function of temperature. oxygen partial pressure, and composition were determined, as well as the electromotive forces of cells in which the oxygen partial Pressures of the electrodes were between 10-7 and 10-29 atm at 1000°C. Additional factors that influence the experimental arrangements, such as the operating temperature, the appropviate cell atmosphere, and electrode kinetics, are also discussed. IT has long been recognized that galvanic cells incorporating solid electrolytes can possess many advantages for the measurement of high-temperature thermodynamic data. Unfortunately, the electrical-transport properties have only been established for a few solid electrolytes, although attempts have been made, and are still being made, to use such materials as porcelain&apos; and magnesia.&apos; Kuikkola and Wagner have discussed3 and demonstrated4 various applications of solid electrolytes, and, in particular, their work stimulated the electrochemical measurement of oxygen activities using cells incorporating the solid oxide electrolyte, Zr0.85Ca0.15O1.85 The excellent characteristics of this oxide electrolyte have been confirmed by the investigations of Kingery et al.5 (oxygen ion diffusion), Carter and Rhodes6 (zirconium and calcium ion diffusion), and Weissbart and Ruka7 (electronic transference number). However the observations of Peters and Mobius,8 later confirmed by Schmalzried,9 indicated that the electronic component of zirconia-based electrolytes could become significant at low oxygen chemical potentials. Under these conditions, thoria-based electrolytes have obvious advantages arising from their superior thermodynamic stability. It was known that certain thoria solid solutions possessed defect fluorite structures containing anionic vacancies (cf. Zro.85Cao.l50O1. 85), although data on their electrical properties were conflicting. Kiukkola and wagner4 concluded that thoria-based electrolytes exhibited appreciable electronic conductivity, whereas Peters and Mobius8 mentioned that the electronic conductivity only became important at high oxygen partial pressures, but gave no further details. In addition, both Kiukkola and wagner4 and Peters and Mann&apos;" had determined the oxygen chemical potentials associated with the Fe-FeO, Co-COO, Ni-NiO, and Cu-Cu2O equilibria, and it was not known whether discrepancies in their results could be attributed to the different cell design, or the thoria-based electrolyte used by Peters and Mann. These uncertainties have been resolved during the present investigation into the measurement of low oxygen chemical potentials, and transport properties of the relevant oxide electrolytes are presented and discussed. Other experimental difficulties associated with low oxygen chemical potential measurements are also described, with particular reference to the Nb-O system. 1. THEORETICAL CONSIDERATIONS Oxide systems of potential use as solid electrolytes possess a large energy gap between the valence and conduction bands. Little is known about the defects present in these wide-gap metal oxides as a function of impurity content and deviations from stoichiom-etry, or the mechanisms by which electronic charges move in these solids. For these materials it is convenient to represent the measured conductivity as the the sum of three terms: where a, is the conductivity due to positive hole conduction (p type), and oe is the electronic conductivity due to electron conduction (n type). U there is a large concentration of ionic vacancies fixed by composition then the ionic contribution will not be a function of oxygen pressure. Although the possibility of a pressure-independent electronic component also cannot be ignored, it is likely that such a term would only become significant at very high temperatures, and in general the positive hole conduction will increase with increasing oxygen pressure, and the electron conduction will increase with decreasing oxygen pressure. It follows that the total conductivity is related to oxygen partial pressure as follows:
