This paper describes the grinding circuits installed at two remote sites in northern Canada. One is Cominco's Polaris Project at Little Cornwallis Island; a barge-mounted lead/zinc concentrator. The other is Echo Bay Mines' Lupin Project at Contwoyto Lake, 400 km northeast of Yellowknife, a gold mine, all components of which had to be flown to the site. Logistics and considerations of operating and maintenance presented challenges which were met by innovative design. The evolution of the grinding circuits is discussed. Both plants are operating at design throughput.

The purpose of this paper is to set the stage for (1) the determination of the specifications and actions required for a successful development of a system for the management of waste deposits and contaminants resulting from activities in the mineral industries and landfills and (2) the appropriate infrastructure to be developed at the industrial level. The design of this system would be such that its application could be extended to other industries as well. Waste deposits and contaminants from activities in the mineral industries and landfills commonly cause damage to the environment. In addition to precautionary measures aiming to protect against environmental impact, early warning and immediate response to mining hazards and contaminants is a requirement for sustainable development. Hazard detection and control requires continuous and real-time detection techniques, as well as methods for tracing and predicting the motion of contaminants and waste products. The efficient accomplishment of these goals in the minerals industry requires developing an integrated system for environmental monitoring using remote sensing technologies, in combination with advanced image analysis and geostatistical techniques.

Environmental considerations related to the disposal of coal combustion byproducts (CCBs) and the impacts of deforestation associated with the harvesting of timber for utilization as roof supports in mines should become more severe in the future, as landfill space and suitable timber reserves become more scarce. To help address these concerns, lightweight artificial supports, such as post and crib elements, that use large percentages of coal combustion byproducts as aggregate have been developed for use in underground mines. These structural products show equal or better engineering characteristics than timber, and they have the potential to replace timber support in underground mines. CCB-based ultralight structural material (ULSM) has also been developed and commercialized for use in the construction of ventilation stoppings in underground mines. The bulk densities of these blocks range from 0.40 to 0.64 g/cm3 (25 to 40 lb per cu ft) with more than 75% CCBs. Efforts are also given to develop and demonstrate large volume CCB-based subgrade improvement technique for road construction. Soil treated with SIUC fluidized-bed combustion (FBC) fly ash developed an immediate bearing value exceeding 25% with a swelling strain of less than I %, which is greater than untreated soils, and met Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) standard specifications. In this paper, development procedures, engineering characteristics and beneficial uses of CCB-based structural products are given.

The Humphrey's spiral is a static gravity separation device which cannot be adjusted to match short-term variations that occur in the feed. Any disturbance in the feed grade, per cent solids or flow rate affects substantially the recovery and grade of concentrate. Such variations must be minimized in order to maintain the desired rate of production and quality of the product for which the installation has been designed. A study has been performed in which the foregoing assertions were quantified. The feed grade, per cent solids, flow rate and particle size were varied independently. Ore from Carol Lake, Nfld., was used throughout the experiments. This consisted of specular hematite and magnetite in a silica gangue.

The only good news in the exploration sector in 1982-a year plagued by low metal prices and weak demand-was precious metals. Gold in particular remained in the forefront, as it has for at least the past three years. The reason for this is partially due to gold's seeming resilience to conventional supply side factors-such as new production-that normally influence many other metals. Also, with projected production costs of about $6.40-$9.65/g ($200¬$300/oz), modest deposits with average grades can offer an early return on capital investment and good profit potential. Keeping escalating capital costs for new mining ventures within reason has shifted gold exploration efforts in recent years. Many mining companies are seeking relatively low grade, modest tonnage, near-surface gold mineralization. This, of course, leads to lower development costs using open-pit mining methods. Recent refinements in the carbon-in-pulp recovery process also has enhanced the economics of such deposits. Slumping economic conditions certainly played a key role in shaping exploration activity last year. Nearly every major mineral-producing state recorded exploration slowdowns. In Alaska, for example, development expenditures approached the level of exploration spending for the first time in the state's history. This not only reflects major companies' decisions to move toward production but also the economic slowdown. The worldwide recession stopped Nevada's exploration and mining boom "dead in its tracks," said John Schilling, state geologist. The year was one of layoffs and closings for the state's mines and exploration offices, he reported. Similar trends were noted in most other states, especially in the West and Southwest. In the Pacific Northwest, however, exploration appeared to continue at a relatively good pace considering the metals market. In the mining geophysical community, recent advances in telecommunications and microprocessor technology are continuing to provide a positive impact. Many geophysicists have begun using satellite digital communication links to access computer systems from remote sites where using a microcomputer would be difficult. There were also major contributions made in exploration geochemistry last year. Highlights include progress in formulating mineral deposit models, geochemical exploration in glaciated and arid environments, and publication of many informative books. The following state-by-state summary and articles on geophysics and geochemistry provides a detailed view of exploration events throughout the US in 1982.

In 2005, a total of 739 nonmetal mining operations reported employment to the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA). These mines (e.g., potash, gypsum, salt) comprised 5.0% of all operations. ? Mines producing common clay comprised 26.9% (n=199) of all nonmetal mining operations. ? Nonmetal mining operations were located in all states and territories except Alaska, Delaware, Hawaii, Maine, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, Puerto Rico, and the Virgin Islands.

• The Venezuelan Trade Mission to the United States announced that Bethlehem Steel Corp. will begin exporting iron ore from its El Pao concession, south of the Orinoco River in Venezuela, in about three months. The ore will be transported by rail from the mines to barges on the Orinoco and transshipped to ore vessels at the coast for shipment to the Sparrows Point, Md., plant. The Latin American business men warned that projected increases in the United States tariff on petroleum imports from Venezuela would force that country into bilateral trade agreements with other countries and would mean drastic curtailment of Venezuelan imports from this country. •Bethlehem, South American Gold and Platinum Co., and U. S. Steel are investigating the possibilities of securing American foodstuff for their South American mining camp commissaries through the International Basic Economy Corp. IBEC buys in quantity to supply its subsidiary companies operating in Venezuela and Brazil. The mining companies will rid themselves of this burdensome task as well as realizing a saving from the bulk purchases of IBEC. •Oliver Iron Mining Co. has begun construction of a fine ore and taconite agglomeration plant at Virginia, Minn. It is expected to be ready in six months. The plant will be used to experiment with the making of clinker cakes and egg-sized lumps by sintering machines and nodulizing kilns respectively; about 1 million tons per year will be produced. • Roof pinning has been adopted at the iron mines of TCI, near Birmingham, to support overlying strata as mining progresses. Favorable results have been obtained in that dilution of the ore has been reduced by 50% which is attributable to this method of supporting the roof. •An American mining engineering team has gone to Turkey for a two-year assignment assisting Turkish government agencies in the $45 million ECA development, mechanization, and construction of cleaning plants for the Zonguldak coal field, 200 miles east of Istanbul on the Black Sea. The group consists of James Beeley, John E. Good, John S. Lambright, David Renshaw, and Charles R. Weir, all of the Paul Weir Co. •Arthur F. Taggart describes a new way of training engineers by emphasis on broad, basic engineering courses on page 460 of this issue. •Lawrence T. Tierney, chairman of the National Bituminous Coal Advisory Council, released a report stating that the increase in oil imports since the latter part of 194$ has caused significant damage to the U. S. fuel economy. It has reduced the strength of and employment opportunities in the coal, domestic petroleum, and transportation industries, as well as in related service and supplier fields. •Women, camels, and donkeys are the beasts of burden of the Sahara, according-to the UNESCO World Review. •Increased demand for magnesium sheet in airplane construction ana other phases of the national security program have led Alcoa to establish a sheet magnesium rolling division at its New Kensington, Pa., works which will begin operation shortly. Novel prospecting methods being used by the USGS in its search for uranium include: shock-mounted instruments in light trucks,. Geiger-counter probes lowered into augur holes, and experimental airborne prospecting.

The paper point out the Angostura deposit is located in Colombia. The Angostura deposit, located within the Eastern Cordillera of Colombia is hosted by Triassic-Jurassic quartz monzonite and quartz diorite porphyries emplaced into Precambrian gneisses of the Bucaramanga Group. Silicification, pyritization, sericitization, alunite and pyrophyllite and other alteration and indicator minerals suggest a high sulfidation origin for the strong hydrothermal alteration. Major faults and shear zones occur in the area with NE, E-NE, E-W, WNW, NW and N-S directions. Analysis of geological results and structural modeling has also demonstrated that there is potential for additional high-grade ore shoots within the presently known mineralized structures. Delineating these structures should result in an increase of overall grade and contained ounces.

The Wyoming Minerals - Conoco Crownpoint Joint Venture represents the first time that big hole drilling has been exclusively used to develop a privately financed mine. Three shafts, one ten feet in diameter and two six feet in diameter, have been successfully drilled to depths of 2243', 2188' and 2188' respectively and lined with hydrostatic designed steel casing. The largest shaft is to be used to as a development shaft to handle muck and water from enlargement and station excavation of the other two shafts. A reverse fluid air assist circulation system with potassium base mud was used during drilling. The mud was cleaned by settling in steel lined tanks with assistance from cyclone type sand separators. Deviation was monitored with wireline gyroscopic surveying instruments at 30 foot intervals. Horizontal departure did not exceed 16 inches off perpendicular. Casing was designed to withstand full hydrostatic pressures with a 1.5 safety factor for the large shaft and 1.25 safety factor for the two smaller shafts. All casing welds were x-rayed prior to lowering the casing into the hole. Cementing the annular space completed the operation. The total time to mobilize, drill and move off the three shafts was 363 days. The drilling operation was completed ahead of schedule and under budget.

The immediate roof lithology at United Colliery is extremely variable and provides a challenge for the design of secondary support. Support design in recent longwall installation roads at the mine has been carried out using strata management techniques. These techniques allow a robust yet economical secondary roof support design to be achieved. Analysis of roof lithology and roof displacement during first pass driveage are used as a basis for the optimisation of the secondary support design prior to roadway widening. This paper will demonstrate the application of practical strata management techniques in the optimisation of secondary roof support in six installation roadways at United Colliery. The experience gained from the installation roadways for LWs 1 to 5 will be briefy discussed. The experience from LW 6 will be discussed in greater detail. The paper will describe the strata management system that was used, including mapping, borescoping and extensometry, as well as the development and application of a Trigger Action Response Plan (TARP).

The present state of Czech and Polish coal mining industry is presented at the beginning of the article. This paper will inform the reader of the general data concerning hard coal reserves? number of mines, number of miners, output, number of longwalls, productivity, depth of extraction, and extraction methods?in both countries. The main part of the paper describes the methods of gateroad development as well as gateroad support characteristics (support types, gateroad shape and dimensions, distance between support sets, types of reinforcements). The development prospects of gateroad support in the Czech and Polish coal mining industry are also presented.

About 15 per cent of total electricity (400 MkW) was generated by nuclear power plants in the world (2009) and about 36 000 tons of uranium has been mined in uranium mines annually. Radioactive waste material is produced from uranium mines and nuclear power plants. The wastes must be disposed or stored safely for long-term. If they leak and/or move from disposal or storage sites due to air/groundwater flow, then a serious environmental pollution can occur. Hence, multi-layer system has been proposed and employed in order to seal off these radioactive waste materials from biosphere. Basically, bentonite is now used for establishing absorbing and sealing layers in this system. However, the amount of high quality betonite is very limited and in some cases it is hard to be obtained.On the other hand, a great deal of refuse from coal burning plants is produced every year and the amount of it is expected to be higher each year, especially in developing countries. More than half of flyash is utilised and the remaining is disposed at the disposal sites. However, the life of the disposal site is limited and it is diff cult to find a new disposal site. It is requested that the percentage of the utilisation of the flyash be increased in every field.From the above two points of view, a flyash-based barrier layer/cover system is considered in this research and this paper discusses the applicability of flyash as a content of barrier layer/cover material based on the results of a series of laboratory tests.

With the growing dependence on coal as an energy source, finding a means to prevent or reduce the freezing of coal during winter shipment has become increasingly important. Several chemical companies focused on this problem and applied chemical technology to develop suitable solutions. As a result, a number of freeze conditioning agents have been introduced in the past few years, several of which have been highly effective in controlling frozen coal. The efficacy of these chemicals has been well established, however many users have found that only a well defined program will produce acceptable results at a reasonable cost. Positive program results yielding recognizable benefits have caused many power generating and coking plants to consider freeze conditioning agents. A freeze conditioning agent (or FCA) has been defined as a multi-component organic liquid designed to be sprayed on coal particles at bulk shipping points to assure that receiving locations will be able to unload, store and use the treated coal with minimum delay or inconvenience. The chemicals are generally applied at rates of 1 to 2 pints (0.473 to 0.946 liters) per ton and normally function by changing the crystalline structure of water left on the coal during processing. The bond strength of the ice that may subsequently form is markedly reduced. Instead of freezing into solid, unmanageable masses, the coal can be easily unloaded by rotary dumping or the opening of hopper car doors.

A long-term, large-scale, disturbance-recolonization experiment with relevance to the environmental effects of deep seabed mining is described. The study is funded by the German government and was launched in the abyssal eastern tropical South Pacific Ocean in February-March, 1989. After obtaining pre-impact baseline environmental data, a 10.8 km2 (4.2 sq miles) circular area of seafloor was disturbed using a specially designed "plow-harrow" device. An initial post-impact sampling series was carried out immediately after disturbance followed by a second post-impact sampling series six months after the disturbance. Plans call for repeated visits to the site at two year intervals to monitor the anticipated slow recolonization process until the area is inhabited by a new, stabilized community.

INTRODUCTION Before discussing the use of the free piston; it may be well to explain briefly the type of gas lift valves with which the loo] is designed to function. The gas lift valve ii nothing more or less than a small back pressure regulator. It; construction consists of an outer hous ing covering a seamless metallic bellows in such a way as in form a sealed pressure vessel or pressure dome. To the bellow* in attached a stem and to this stem is attached a .rating member. When the valve is run into the hole, a pre-delermined pressure charge is placed in the pressure dome. As shown in Fig. 1. the valve is furnished in four different major assem-blies. to accomplish good results in different types of wells. The valve is mounted on a pup joint (Fig. 2a) : the eoin-plele assembly is entered into the tubing siring at the desired location. Each valve is furnished with a revere flow check valve (Fig. 2-b) to eliminate any back wash through the mechanism. Valve action is as follows: At any time the casing pressure is allowed to exceed the pressure forces within the pressure dome of the valve, the valve simply opens and passes gas from the rasing annulus into the tubing. When the casing pressure forces arc allowed to bleed to a force less than the pressure force within the dome, of the valve. the valve closes. With this type of construction. it is possible to open and close the valve or valves at will from the surface, the medium of the gas pressure in the rasing annnlus. The cycle of operation is governed by a tine cycle motor valve, commonly referred to as a gas lift interutitter or gas life surfacr controller (Fig. 3). In actual practice. after the well is unloaded only one valve is in operation . . . all other valve.: remain in the closed position. On pre-determined time cycles, it is possible to open and close this operating valve at will, and to pass the desired amount of gas through this valve wheneler needed. This method of gas lift is widelv used and has been found In be very efficient. However, it has long been known that even greater efficiency would be obtained if it were possible to place Piston between the injected gas and the fluid head. The free piston which will be discussed here was designed to accomplish this end and has been found to do so with very satisfactory results. DESIGN AND OPERATION OF THE FREE PISTON Basically. the free piston consist- of a telescoping assembly in which are incorporated the various control and operating parts (Fig. A set of sleeve valves which are opened and closed by movement of the telescoping section is contained in the. tool. A cross section of the free piston is shown in Fig. 4-11, 'rile main body cotain- a seamless monel bellows of the same type as that generally used in pressure charged gas lift valves (Fig. 4-c), and a valve core to permit placing a pressure charge in the bellows before the free piston is placed in service. The bellows is the main control unit of the free piston and performs two function: 1. It governs the opening and closing of the sleeve valves. a.: dictated by the producing activities of the well in which the piston is operating. 2. In its normal position, it holds a rubber packer in an elongated position to permit passage of fluid between the packer and the tubing walls. Duval's (now Battle Mountain Gold Co.) copper and gold deposits in the Battle Mountain District in Nevada are in two subdistricts - Copper Basin and Copper Canyon - about 18 km (11miles) apart. Location of the two subdistricts is shown in Fig. 1. The two centers of mineralization have distinctive geologic and ore characteristics that required different innovative approaches to exploration and development. Nearly all of the copper from Copper Basin has been recovered by heap leaching. Because of relatively high gold and silver values in the Copper Canyon ores, a significant part of the sulfide copper ores has been recovered by a conventional flotation mill at Copper Canyon. Recently, this mill has been converted to the recovery of gold that is mined from zones peripheral to the copper deposits. Prior to Duval's entry, small amounts of copper, gold, silver, lead, zinc, and antimony had been mined in the district over a nearly 100 year period, beginning in 1866. The bulk of the $13 million total production to 1962 was derived from copper and gold lode ores and gold placers. Duval's interest in Battle Mountain-arose directly from a submittal by Asarco, which controlled key claims in both the Copper Basin and Copper Canyon subdistricts. Asarco acquired its holdings in the district in 1959 and undertook limited exploration until mid-1961. At that time, the company decided to dispose of its interests. Duval was invited to evaluate Asarco's properties and accepted. On Dec. 6 and 7, 1961, J.E. Frost, R.C. James, R.W. Sayers, and H.A. Schmitt, representing Duval, and K. Richard and E.W. New- man, representing Asarco, visited Copper Basin and Copper Canyon. Frost concluded that the properties were of considerable interest and prepared, by Jan. 12, 1962, a voluminous report recommending that Duval acquire and explore Asarco's properties. Furthermore, he recommended a large initial exploration program that included not only geologic mapping, geochemistry, and geophysics, but also the extensive drilling that was to involve, as the first phase of exploration, 49 drill holes in Copper Basin and 21 drill holes in Copper Canyon. Following property agreements between Duval and Asarco, and Duval and several other claim owners, geologic mapping, geochemical surveys, and drilling began in August 1962. Exploration drilling was completed in July 1964 and engineering studies in April 1965. Development of the Battle Mountain properties was authorized in July 1965, and production commenced in the first quarter of 1967. Because of the unusually high oxide copper content of the ore bodies, particularly in Copper Basin, a much larger than typical proportion of the copper in the deposits has been recovered by heap leaching. The generalized geology and ore zones of the Copper Basin are as shown in Fig. 2 and of Copper Canyon in Fig. 3.

"In this paper, vacuum distillation technology has been employed to study the possibility and regularity of separating copper and enriching lead, silver and other valuable metals from copper- based multi component alloys. The result of experiment indicated the practicability of vacuum distillation dealing with copper base complex multi-component alloy to separating lead and silver, when the vacuum distillation temperature was 1637K, distillation time was 60min; residual gas pressure was 20-30Pa, the removal rate of silver was 95.86%, of lead was 99.63%; the evaporation rate of copper was 0.745%. The removal rate of arsenic, antimony and tin respectively were 83.09%, 48.12% and 24.54%. Vacuum distillation method is applicable for dealing with the copper-based multi component alloys, silver and lead can realize effective recovery.IntroductionCopper generally go with lead mineral, therefore, to remove copper from lead becomes an inevitable link in lead smelting. Dross from removed copper usually contains lead, arsenic, antimony, tin and noble metal silver. In abroad, soda ash-iron dust is adopted to process copper dross of this kind. The outcomes of this process are lead matte, wet lead, scoria smoke dust etc[1~5] The dominant components of all the outcomes are copper and lead. Moreover, in the process of tin smelting, copper contained by-products are produced, such as, crude tin alloy, tin lead electrolytic anode slime and so on. Copper content of all the products are ranging from few percentages to several tens percentage. Those products, no matter merge into main producing process, or separate treatment cost losses of valuable metal. For one hand, the containing of copper of outcomes from pyrogenic attack is less than 50%, for the other hand, a lot of valuable metal need to be processed, which increase the cost of retrieve."

Expanding world economic prosperity, probable peaking of conventional petroleum production in the coming decades and environmental concerns require efforts to increase the efficiency of, and the development of alternatives to, petroleum-based fuels used in automotive transportation. In January 2002, the U.S. Department of Energy (USDOE) and the U.S. Council for Automotive Research (USCAR) of the "Big Three" traditionally-USA-based automakers, DaimlerChrysler, Ford and General Motors, formed the Freedom Cooperative Automotive Research (FreedomCAR) Partnership to fund high-risk, high-payoff research into advanced automotive technologies with the potential for eventually lowering the USA's nearly complete (95%) dependence on petroleum, 55% imported, for its transportation fuels. FreedomCAR replaced the Partnership for a New Generation of Vehicles (PNGV) which existed from 1993 to 2001. In January 2003, the energy-supply industry joined with the FreedomCAR Partnership forming the FreedomCAR and Fuel Initiative (FC&FI) to develop the technologies needed for the mass production of fuel-cell vehicles using hydrogen as fuel and the infrastructure needed to deliver the hydrogen to the consumer. The goal is to enable the automotive and energy-supply industries to make commercialization decisions in 2015 on large-scale introduction of such vehicles and on developing the infrastructure beginning in 2020. In addition to work on fuel cells and hydrogen infrastructure, the FC&FI conducts research on technologies with the potential for nearer-term energy efficiency and environmental benefits, such as new engine concepts, lightweight materials, and engine-electric hybrid propulsion systems. Lightweighting is seen as crucial for shorter and for longer term benefits because hybrid and fuel-cell powertrains are expected, at least in the early stages of adoption, to be heavier and more costly per unit of power than the standard internal-combustion, gasoline- or diesel-fueled powertrains they replace. Research and development (R&D) on casting of aluminum automotive components were major parts of the PNGV and R&D on casting of magnesium automotive components have been and are so under FreedomCAR. This presentation will review those efforts.

Total pressure oxidation (TPOX) is widely outreached leaching practice for base metals from sulfide minerals, wherein high temperature (T ∼ 200 °C) and oxygen pressure (pO2 ∼ 25 bar) are required. These aggressive conditions intensify the oxygen mass transfer, and therefore facilitate metal dissolution. However, challenging-cum-negative aspects of such practice are energy and material intensive requirements and high oxygen demand. Thus, the present study explores the novel emulsified medium for enhancement of oxygen mass transfer, which assists faster metal dissolution at significantly lower temperature and pressure condition. It is possible to achieve quantitative dissolution (>95%) of Cu, Ni and Co from mixed sulfide minerals at T ∼ 95 °C and pO2 ∼ 2 bar using an emulsion of 2.5% (v/v) n-Hexadecane in dilute sulfuric acid. In addition, n-Hexadecane was found to be inert, stable and immiscible in a pressurized leaching system, thus can be easily separated and recycled in subsequent leaching stages. Thus, this study offers an energy efficient route for low temperature-pressure leaching of sulfides.
