Frente a esta problemática, es primordial eliminar o controlar los lixiviados tóxicos de los relaves y mejorar su estabilidad física, con el propósito de reducir el impacto ambiental de los contaminantes en los recursos de agua y suelos, así como asegurar la seguridad física de las relaveras, a fin de ganar la confianza de los stakeholder.

Existing processes for the recovery of platinum group metals (PGM) from UG-2 ores place stringent requirements with regard to chromite content upon feed material to the plant. An alternative hydrometallurgical process for which this is not an issue is proposed that involves reductive roasting of the ore followed by leaching with HCl/chlorine, ion exchange, and recovery of PGM from the ion exchange eluate by reduction. Problems associated with leaching of PGM are discussed and results of laboratory testwork for each of the process steps are given.

Segregation of tailings on deposition can occur as a result of a) sub-aqueous deposition, and b) sub-aerial deposition at lower solids concentrations (i.e. when the solids concentration is less than the segregation threshold). The effects are likely to be more pronounced in the case of subaqueous deposition.This paper presents the results of an investigation of a sub-aqueous tailings facility.Data from the investigation show extreme variations in particle size and density compared to test results for non-segregated ‘all-in” tailings. The results indicate that on segregation both the fine and coarse splits tend towards a well sorted (poorly graded) mix, and both have significantly lower consolidated density than the all in tailings. This result is reasonably well known for the case of the segregated fines (“slimes ponds”) but less appreciated for the coarse fraction. The results suggest that if the effects of segregation are not allowed for, the overall density of the deposit can be seriously over-estimated at the design stage. Also the quantity of water retained in the tailings can significantly influence water recovery and water balance results.CITATION:Seddon, K, 2018. THE existence of mechanical twins in bcc metals has long been known. With recent intensive interest in the mechanism of twin formation and its role in plasticity and crack initiation, a study of the general Characteristics of twin intersection appears pertinent. The scope of the present note will be limited to the crystallography of the twin intersections of (112) twins, without consideration of its mechanism, movement of atoms, crystal structure, or the strain energy involved at such an intersection. The twinning elements of (112) twins are considered to be K1 = {112}, n1 = (111) and K2 = {112}, n2 = (111) with a twin shear of 0.707. The crystallographic features of twin intersections have been worked out in detail by Cahn.1 The present work applies the general principles postulated by Cahn to the intersections of (112) twins. The basic conditions for the twin intersection are: 1) The trace of crossing (A) and the secondary (C) twins in the planes of the crossed twin (B) must be parallel. 2) The direction (n1) and magnitude (s) of shear must be identical in the crossing and secondary twins. Also the sense of shear must be the same. These two conditions have to be fulfilled in order to maintain geometrical continuity at the twin interfaces. Fig. 1 shows the perspective representation of how these two conditions are fulfilled at the intersection. This type of intersection will be named Type-I. It is the purpose of this note to point out the existence of another type of intersection, Type-II, as shown in Fig. 2. In this type of intersection, the crossing twin A remains straight and the crossed twin B has been bent. The two conditions laid down by Cahn must also be met. This leads to the following corollary conditions: 1) The interface between twins B and C must be parallel to the twin habit of crossing twin A. 2) n1c must be parallel to n1A. 3) The twin shear (s) of twin C must be exactly equal to and in the same sense as that of crossing twin A. Thus, in order for the Type-II intersection to take place, the twining elements of secondary twin C must fulfill the above three conditions with respect to crossing twin A. (Butte Meeting, August, 1913.) IN order to obtain data on the thermal effect of the blast-furnace jacket and oil the water consumption in these jackets a series of tests were run on the 56 by 180 in. blast furnaces at the Great Falls Reduction Department of the Anaconda Copper Mining Co., at Great Falls, Mont. The arrangement of the jacket is shown in the transverse section of one of the furnaces (Fig. 1) on which the tests were made. The nose, spout, and breast jackets have independent water supplies and discharges. The end and side jackets are connected in pairs, as regards water supply, the feed water entering at the bottom of the lower jacket and overflowing into the bottom of the jacket immediately above it, and discharging into an independent overflow pipe for each pair of jackets. Tests were run on the main side and end jackets, the breast jacket, the spout, and the nose. Measurements were taken of the quantity of water discharged per minute and the rise in temperature of the water in its passage through the jacket. The product of these two results, expressed in the proper units, evidently gives the number of units of heat removed per minute by the water. Sufficient work was done on each type of jacket to determine its behavior under different conditions, and the results from each set of conditions were checked by repeating the work from three to six times.

The production of salt through brining operations and the recovery of potash salts by means of solution with water constitute, in large measure, processes which have been used for many years. And although the salt industry has utilized dissolution techniques for years and years it has been only recently that a better understanding of the mechanism of solution has emerged. Greater adaptability of solution mining processes for recovery of valuable salts from ore bodies found at greater and greater depth has resulted in increased adoption of such methods. Because of the high costs of mining in beds of limited thickness, modifications probable when extracting mixed halites, and restrictions (mostly self-imposed) regarding the extent of cavern development to minimize or eliminate subsidence more information is needed on the solution mechanism. It is the purpose of this paper to present the fundamental aspects of the problem of total solution of salts and to point out the developments of certain solution mining techniques.

"Acid leaching in agitated tanks is central to hydrometallurgical processing for valuable metals’ (e.g., copper, gold, nickel and cobalt) recovery from low grade (e.g., < 2 wt.%) ores. In this study, atmospheric leaching behaviour of Australian saprolitic nickel (Ni) laterite ore using sulfuric acid was investigated under isothermal, batch conditions at pH 1. The effect of primary process variables comprising time (4 h) and temperature (70 and 95 oC) on the leaching mechanisms and kinetics was established for -2 mm, low grade (~1 % Ni) saprolitic ore dispersions at 40 wt.% solid loading. Leaching proceeded incongruently, reflecting the proliferation of gangue minerals’ constituent elements (e.g., Mg, Al, Fe) alongside Ni and Co in the pregnant leach solutions (PLS). Subsequent analysis showed that 89% Ni and 78% Co were extracted after 4 h at 95 oC whilst at 70 oC the recoveries of these metals were markedly low (< 25 %). Overall, 177 and 644 kg H2SO4 /t dry ore were consumed at 70 and 95 oC, respectively. Activation energy of 79.0 ±1.0 kJ/mol was estimated for the mechanism of Ni and Co leaching and associated kinetics. Particles size analyses indicated that when the breakage of frail laterite particles due to shear is taken into consideration, differences in feed and leached product particle size distributions were insignificant , despite a remarkable increase in BET specific surface area of the product. Mineralogical analyses of the feed ore and leached solid products revealed a sub-crystalline silica phase enrichment of the latter. The overall results suggest that the mechanism of acid leaching of saprolitic Ni laterite may be described by a chemical reaction-controlled, shrinking core model."

THE TOTAL production of energy in the United States in 1954 decreased 4.6 percent below 1953. The production of coal continued to decline, and the production of crude oil decreased for the first time since 1949. These decreases were partly offset by an increase in the production of natural gas. The total energy production of 35,365 trillion B. t. u. in 1954 was the lowest since 1950. [ ] This drop in energy production was consistent with the 1.1-percent decline in gross national product during the year-from 364.5 billion dollars in 1953 to 360.5 billion in 1954.

Natural gas has been known to exist for many years in the St. Lawrence Valley, between Quebec and Montreal, and more partirularly in the vicinity of Louisville and Three Rivers, 74 and 94 miles respectively northeast of Montreal, and 98 and 78 miles respectively southwest of Quebec; the distance from Montreal to Quebec along the St. Lawreuce River being about 175 miles. It was not until 1880 that any practical explorations were begun with the hope of finding gas in sufficient quantities for commercial uses. In this year Messrs. Piret and Genest, of Three Rivers, sank a well near St. Maurice to a depth of 50 feet, where solid rock was encountered. A similar well was drilled through the glacial and allavial drift, in the same district, in 1883, by the Messrs. Renaud Freres and Dubois, to a depth of 70 feet before solid rock was encountered. In this latter well a strong flow of gas was obtained. The gas was an outflow from a very limited reservoir in the porous glacial gravel, which had been filled from the gas resulting from the decomposition of vegetable remains, which had been buried in the gravel at the time of its deposition. Subsequently, other wells were sunk in the same way, with the hope of getting gas in commercial quantities from similar reservoirs. CONSTANTAN is an alloy of copper and nickel that is extensively used, under a number of trade names, as a resistance wire with a low temperature coefficient of resistance, and one of the elements of base-metal thermocouples, iron usually being the other thermoelement, although for low-temperature work copper is also used. Before the war, constantan was imported, in common with many other technical necessities. Since it required considerable time to receive the constantan after it was ordered, fairly large stocks were kept on hand; but after the beginning of the war no more was imported acid the stocks of foreign material were exhausted about the same time that the steel and munition manufacturers began to need great quantities of it for thermocouples for the heat treatment of steel. To meet this demand, the International Nickel Co. began manufacturing constantan that met all the requirements of the users of resistance wire but did not give the same electromotive force against iron as the German material and consequently could not be used with instruments calibrated for a definite e.m.f.-temperature relation. It so happened that all the constantan made had an e.m.f. lower than that necessary to meet the specifications of the Leeds & Northrup Co. for whom this investigation was carried out. If some had been higher and some lower, good wire could have been obtained by a, process of selection, but as it was no wire at all could be procured. To remedy this situation, a thorough investigation was started with the close cooperation of the International Nickel Co. and the Electrical Alloys Co. The specifications to which the constantan had to conform were that it should give an e.m.f. of 47.40 millivolts. against pure iron at 1500° F. (816° C.) with the cold-junction temperature at 0° F., or a proportional e.m.f. at temperatures near 1500° F. THE increased demand for iron ore has necessitated a re-examination of ore-bearing lands on which the presence of water previously has indicated hazardous and expensive operating conditions. In view of the importance of iron ore production to the national economy and defense, the Ground Water Branch of the U. S. Geological Survey, in cooperation with the state of Michigan, began a study of mine drainage in the Iron River district in 1945, and later extended the work to the Marquette district. The purpose of these studies was to define the principles involved in the movement of surface and ground water toward the mined areas, with the hope that the information obtained in the research would lead to the development of methods of water control and to a reduction in the total mining costs.

This brief resume of events, transpiring in Mexico, culled from the daily New York newspapers, since the last Bulletin went to press, does not indicate any degree of improvements in the situation. GENERAL ALVAREZ COURTMARTIALED AND SHOT General Francisco Alvarez of the anti-Government forces was captured in the battle in which General Aureliano Blanquet, Minister of War in the Huerta Cabinet, was killed, and was sentenced by a courtmartial and shot in spite of a specific order of the Supreme Court in Mexico City that the execution should not take place. General Alvarez was a member of the staff of Felix Diaz, and was a veteran of the old regular army of Mexico. MEXICO WILL NOT RECOGNIZE MONROE DOCTRINE Failure of the Allied Powers to invite Mexico to participate in the conference of neutrals at Paris aroused President Carranza to bitter resentment, which was enhanced by the incorporation of recognition of the Monroe Doctrine in the covenant of the League of Nations without consultation with Mexico. Statements were issued by the Mexican Foreign Office disavowing adherence to the Monroe Doctrine and announcing the withdrawal of the Mexican representative in France. Carranza had been awaiting an opportunity to get his agent away from Paris for the real reason that he had been unable to secure recognition from either the French or the British Government. Mexico announces, says the New York Times editorially, that "she has not recognized and will not recognize the Monroe Doctrine." "Nobody has asked her to recognize the Monroe Doctrine," continues the editorial. "The enforcement of the principles enunciated by President Monroe does not depend upon Mexico, upon anybody&apos;s recognition or non-recognition. The countries concerned in the Monroe Doctrine are the United States on the one hand, and countries not of this hemisphere on the other."

The paper describes activities undertaken for intensification of copper cathodes production in electro-refining plants of the Polish copper smelters: &apos;Legnica&apos;, `Glogów I&apos; and `Glogów II&apos;. In the &apos;Legnica&apos; smelter, Outokumpu?Wenmec machine was used for preparation of copper anodes. Intensive studies were conducted in order to optimise copper electro-refining conditions. As the result of them, spacing between the electrodes was reduced to 99 mm, which enabled placing forty-one cathodes in each tank and increasing amperage from 10.8 to 13.0 kA. This modification resulted in the increase of electro-refining capacity to 103,000 tons/y. Intensification of the copper production at `Glogów II&apos; by 18,000 tons/y became possible after development of new electro-refining procedures, including application of a regime of changes in electrolyte level during the cathode cycle, implementation of the changes in location of starting sheets relative to anodes, and in dimensions of the sheets, and modification in the shape of the anodes. Similar works have been performed at `Glogów I&apos;, which were concentrated mainly on defining of a new method of anodes preparation, modification of their geometry, determination of optimum current density, composition of a set of inhibitors and of a method of their introducing. The implemented solutions resulted in the increase in electro-refining capacity at `Glogów I&apos; from 207,000 to 240,000 tons/y.

Re-opening of the old Proprietary mine has provided new exposures of the system of uralite dolerite dykes observed in 19110 by the Geological Sub-Committee of the Scientific Society of Broken Hill. The newly exposed dykes have been invaded and replaced by the massive ore, with development of manganese garnet and biotite adjacent to the sulphides. A similarly altered dyke in massive ore has been encountered in the North Broken Hill mine.The textures of the unaltered portions of these dykes indicate that they have not been affected by the intense regional metamorphism that has recrystallized the other rocks of the area. Moreover, in mineral composition and textures, in chemical composition, and in cross-cutting relations, they are so similar to the uralite dolerites of the district which post-date the folding and metamorphism of the Broken Hill area, that they must be regarded as typical members of this suite of post-metamorphic dykes.The invasion and replacement of the dykes by the massive sulphide ore, and their metasomatic alteration adjacent to the invading sulphides, establishes that the lode was formed after the dykes were intruded, so that the high temperature features of the ore cannot be attributed to metamorphism and recrystallization, but are primary features of high temperature hydrothermal deposition.INTRODUCTIONTwo cross dykes are recorded on the plan of the 300-ft. level of the Broken Hill lode accompanying the report on the geology of the Broken Hill lode published by the Geological Sub-Committee of the former Scientific Society of Broken Hill (1910). One dyke occurs in Block 12, and the other in Block 13, and both were stated to consist of a dark basic amphibole rock, called diorite for convenience. WITHDRAWS ARMY FROM MEXICO The American invasion of Mexico lasted less than 24 hours. The troops which crossed the Rio Grande June 15 to put a stop to the firing that was causing death and injury in El Paso were back in their billets on the American side of the border the next night. They had broken up the battle between Villa rebels and the Carranza garrison and driven the rebel forces headlong out of Juarez and into the hills. The Carranza Consul, Garcia, and Gen. Francisco Gonzales are reported by American officials to be pessimistic, if not indignant, at the swift reprisals made by the Americans against the stray shots which were falling in El Paso during the Villa attack on Juarez. In announcing his action in ordering Americans into Mexico Brigadier General Erwin in a formal statement said he had done-so to prevent the indiscriminate firing into El Paso by rebel soldiers, endangering the lives of Americans. "But on no account were they to undertake an invasion into Mexico," continued the statement. Americans with interests in the vicinity of Chihuahua are alarmed lest Villa, smarting under the defeat administered his troops by the American forces, should make a campaign of destruction. General Candido Aguilar, President Carranza&apos;s confidential ambassador to the United States, issued to the press, on June 17, a formal statement that "the government and people of Mexico consider as a violation of Mexican sovereignty the crossing of United States soldiers into Mexican territory" and expressing the hope ?that the situation created by the latest occurrences in Juarez will be satisfactorily adjusted between the two countries." Discussion of Mexican affairs was evoked in both houses of Congress by the crossing of the Rio Grande by American troops.

Hardrock mines in Ontario generally operate at between 3,000 and 7,500 ft below surface and generally experience significant rockburst activity below 5,000 ft. Since the introduction of bulk mining techniques around 1980, the safety record of Canadian hardrock mines has improved dramatically. However, the process of improvement was not a smooth one and, in the early years, the number of accidents and fatalities actually increased. One incident in 1984 that resulted in 4 fatalities in Ontario initiated a complete re-examination of mining practice and by the mid 1980s many changes had been introduced, driven by new non-prescriptive mining legislation. These changes affected not only the technical discipline of mining engineering but also the management of operational procedures and, together, they resulted in the significant improvements that have continued to this day. The analysis of the rock-fall related fatalities showed 5 major causes (loose, scaling, installing support, collapse and rockburst) and by the mid 1990s fatalities in all of these categories, except rockbursting, had been eliminated and even then, all these rockburst fatalities occurred in one mine which was closed shortly afterward. This paper discusses both the technical and social reasons for the initial failure and the ultimate success in improving the safety of these mines, with implications for mines in other major mining jurisdictions.

The magnitudes and directions of in situ stresses affect the stability of mine openings, as well as the type and amount of ground support needed to maintain a safe working environment for miners. Using hollow inclusion stress cells, researchers from the Spokane Research Laboratory of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health obtained two in situ stress measurements from the face of two footwall lateral drifts at the Stillwater Mine near Nye, MT. The first measurement, obtained in 1997, was collected under the valley beneath the Stillwater River. The second measurement was obtained in 2002 under the main frontal massif of the Bear tooth Mountains in the western sector of the mine. Although few data are available, the major principal stress under the valley has been recorded as nearly horizontal in a north-south direction perpendicular to the ore body, while beneath the mountains, stress runs east-west parallel to the ore body. This paper documents the measurements, describes the in situ stress state, and discusses a finite-difference analysis of the biaxial test.

"Abstract-Hundreds of diamonds have been found in the United States. The majority of the discoveries occurred during the 19th century as a by-product of placer gold mining. Most of these early diamond finds have no known source, and in many cases are situated in areas unfavorable for diamond exploration based on current models that require kimberlite or lamproite to be emplaced in a stable Archean craton or Proterozoic craton margin.Diamonds have also been recovered in situ from lamproite at Murfreesburo, Arkansas, from kimberlite in the Lake Ellen region of Michigan, and in several kimberlites in the Colorado-Wyoming State Line district. Unverified reports also suggest that diamonds may have been recovered from other related intrusions at a number of localities in the United States."

Drilled displacement (DD) piles often develop significantly larger unit shaft resistance values than other drilled or augered pile systems in coarse grained materials. Minimal vibration and limited spoil development are also associated with DD pile installation and these factors are frequently additional financial and/or environmental benefits of the system. The application of DD piles in North America dates to the mid-1990s and their use in the Midwestern United States has been significant, particularly in the past 10 years. The authors have collected an extensive database of DD pile performance in the United States. The alluvial and glacial deposits of the Midwestern U.S. provide conditions where drilled displacement piles perform very efficiently when compared to coastal and residual geologies. This paper presents a summary of the authors? experience regarding installation and performance of DD piles in the Midwestern U.S. Information presented includes summary presentations of DD performance across a range of site conditions as well as a discussion of the relationship of DD performance and installation effort in the Midwest as compared to other geologic settings in the U.S.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines used a contact drilling strategy with short-collared assemblies in order to rotary drill long horizontal methane drainage holes in the Beckley Coalbed near Glen Daniel, WV. By decreasing the thrust, and increasing the rotation of the drill bit when in contact with the roof and floor rock, assemblies with 1-ft (0.3-m), 10-ft (3- m), and 144 (43-m) long collars were made in deflect and stay in the coalbed. Successful application of this procedure resulted in holes drilled full length in coal with the original assembly including bit. The test assemblies deflected away from the original bearings of the holes during drilling and arced. Four holes were drilled to depths ranging from 478 ft (145.7 m) before the strategy was developed, to 4,034 ft (1,230 m) when the strategy was applied. Total length of the holes in coal was 8,590 ft (2,618 m). After 577 days the total methane captured by the holes was 221,600,000 ft? (6,276,000 m3). The methane flow rate peaked at 805,000 ft3/d (22,798 m3/d), then decreased to stabilize at 670,000 ft?/d (18,974 m3/d) after 6 months.
