Laboratory studies were carried out at West Virginia University to investigate the rock fragmentation mechanism by continuous miners using an automated rotary cutting simulator. The primary factors influencing the fragmentation process were found to be: bit spacing, bit geometry, depth of cut and cutting drum rotational speed. This paper presents the influence of these parameters in achieving optimum energy consumption and minimizing dust generation during rock fragmentation process. Tree bits were used simultaneously on Indiana limestone while the bit tip angle was varied from 60° to 900. Bit spacing was varied from 2.54 cm (1 in.) to 5.08 cm (2 in.) while the cutting process was assessed for varying cutting depths. Restorable dust generated during the course of the experiments was analyzed utilizing cascade impactors. Assessment of these parameters has led to a better understanding of the cutting mechanism by continuous miners in terms of energy consumption and dust generation.

The Prince Lyell orebody at Mount Lyell Mine has a rich mining history commencing with the open pit in 1935, which transitioned underground in 1972. Between 1972 and 2014 a total of 64 Mt was mined underground as the mine extended from 210 m to 1100 m below surface. As the depth increased, three separate transitions in the mining method occurred to meet the changing geotechnical conditions, ore grade, mining costs and metal prices. The first was open stoping with pillar recovery in 1972, followed by front caving and longitudinal sublevel caving (1995), and finally transverse sublevel caving (2004 to 2014). This paper provides an overview of key geotechnical and planning milestones relating to the evolution of the mining method including underground stability, gravity flow, cavability and subsidence. Key aspects of the mine design, geotechnical parameters and rock mass response are described and critiqued with reference to observational, numerical and empirical methods.CITATION:Sharrock, G B and Cuello, D A, 2016. Equilibrium CO2 /CO ratios of a gas phase coexisting with selected oxide phase assemblages of the system CaO-"Fe0"-SiOz and vnetallic iron have been determined at 1080°C. The data obtained are used to calculate activity-conzposition relations for metasili-cute, orthosilicate, and CaO- "FeO" solid solutions, and to determine a new value for the free energy of formation of C&S&0,. The metasilicate solution is practically ideal, whereas large deviations from ideality exist in the othe,r two solid solutions. BECAUSE of the geochemical and metallurgical importance of the oxides CaO, "FeO", and SiOz, the system CaO-"FeO"-SiO2 has been the subject of several experimental studies during the past 30 years. Following the delineation of phase relations at liquidus temperatures by a group of investigators at the Geophysical Laboratory of the Carnegie Institution of Washington in 1933,1 Chipman and associates in the early forties2,3 determined activities of FeO in liquids of this system. Since that time, many attempts have been made to interpret the data of Chipman et al. in terms of the constitution of the silicate liquids and the interaction parameters among the various constituents of the system (see for instance papers by Richardson4 and by Flood and coworkers5). One of the assumptions made in some of these interpretations4 is that the binary silicate systems CaSiO3-FeSiO3 and CazSi04-Fe2SiO4 mix ideally in the solid state. The objective of the present study is to provide experimental data on activity-com position relations in solid solutions of the system CaO-"FeO"-SiO2. Such data will contribute toward an understanding of the thermodynamics of silicate solid-solution phases in general, and will serve specifically to confirm or refute some of the assumptions made in interpreting liquid slag behavior. PREVIOUS WORK Phase relations in the system CaO-"FeO"-SiO2 in contact with metallic iron were determined by Bowen, Schairer, and Posnjak,1 and additional phase-equilibrium data for this system have been presented by Allen and snow.' A reproduction of the most up-to-date phase diagram for this system is shown in Fig. 1.7'8 Of particular interest in the present investigation are the relations among the various crystalline phases slightly below the lowest solidus temperature in the system, as shown in Fig. 2. "COAL MINING at Canmore, Alberta, began in 1886 and continued there until July 1979. A comprehensive review of the Canmore operations is not available, but the following notes have been prepared to accompany references where more complete information about the operations and problems encountered may be found. The coal measures at Canmore occur in the Kootenay formation of Lower Cretaceous age, and at least twelve seams of varying thickness and horizontal extent have been recognized. The coal, of high quality, ranges from semi-anthracite in the lower seams to low-volatile bituminous in the upper seams. The strata of the Canmore area form an asymmetric syncline, the western limb being overturned to vertical by the Palaeozoic strata of the Mount Rundle Range. The eastern limb is more gently sloping, its dip ranging from IO to about 40 degrees. Tectonic movements have created a troubled and complex coal field. The seams were initially not regularly or uniformly deposited, and mountain-building activity folded and faulted the strata and in many places sheared and crushed the original structures of the coal(l,2,3,4,5). The lack of continuity of the seams, and changes in thickness and inclination, made longrange mine planning difficult and necessitated flexible methods of work, and the local disturbances sometimes created problems in roof support and contributed to the occurrence of sudden outbursts of coal and gas. Almost all of the coal was produced from underground operations but a few relatively small V-cut mines were worked along surface outcrops. These have all been filled in and revegetated. The basic method of underground work was by room-and-pillar, but many variations in layout and sequences were employed. Gangways were driven along the strike and pillars were formed by raises or slopes and crosscuts. Pillars were recovered to the extent that ground conditions permitted by splitting or taking 'skips' from the sides of the raises or splits or crosscuts. Because of the variety of conditions that existed in the field a considerable range of cutting, loading and support methods were employed, including hand-loading, slushers and scrapers, duckbills and shaker conveyors, mobile loaders and continuous miners. Except for the coal obtained by continuous miners most of the coal was broken out by blasting when driving narrow working places or by air picks when cutting from a face. In the early years hand loading onto cars or conveyors predominated. A continuous miner was introduced into Canmore in 1959 on a trial basis, and another was subsequently acquired, in order to minimize blasting and hand loading, but problems in operating these machines in inclining seams and difficulties in providing safe roof support for the machines and workers restricted their efficient use. Another major difficulty with the use of continuous miners was the problem of ventilating development headings in the very gassy conditions. In the early 1970s they were replaced by electric and compressed air slushers and scrapers, resulting in a general increase in productivity, roof control, safety, and flexibility of operations(1.6,7,8.9)."

Mineral fillers have been defined as inert materials that are included in a composition for some useful purpose. Because this definition and the scope of this review are not specific-indeed, exceptions abound-accurate total statistics are unavailable. One source estimates the total production in the United States in 1979 at 11.3 Mt (12.5 million st) valued at $534 million, averaging $49.19 per ton. Included are a broad group of minerals-asbestos, barite, bentonite, ground limestone and dolomite, clays, diatomite, feldspar, micas, silica, talc. Additional references will be made to synthetic mineral-derived fillers such as aluminum hydrate, precipitated calcium carbonate, and pyrogenic and precipitated silicas and silicates. A section on related uses at the end of this chapter covers absorbents and filters. Mineral fillers can be included in compounds to accomplish a variety of final results. Hardness, brittleness, impact strength, compressive strength, softening point, fire resistance, surface texture, electrical conductivity, and a host of other physical characteristics may be modified by the inclusion of fillers. These effects are the result of properties of the fillers, including chemical activity, hardness, particle size, shape and distribution, surface structure, color, density, and refractive index. To facilitate an overview of the mineral filler industry, this chapter will review the general usage of fillers, the inherent characteristics that intensify their utilization, and similarly their manufactured characteristics. Major using industries will then be examined in detail. Specific information on deposits and processing for industrial minerals will be found in the appropriate commodity chapter. All of these same minerals have additional significant uses based on their chemical composition or other characteristics. References will be found in other use chapters and summarized in commodity chapters. The chart in Table 1, updated from the 4th edition of Industrial Minerals and Rocks, illustrates the major mineral fillers (both natural and manufactured) and their more important end uses. Use of Mineral Fillers Archaeologists have found that more than 5000 years ago, bitumen used for mortar and waterproofing contained mineral contaminants that acted as fillers. Since that time man has added mineral products to compounds to improve certain characteristics. Perhaps the most common objective of filler usage is reduction of cost of the end product. Certainly the inclusion of a filler that costs 2¢ per 0.45 kg (lb) will reduce the cost of a plastic product whose resin costs 50¢ per 0.45 kg (lb). But the decision to use a specific filler is not that simple. It may "soak up" binder, making a compound more viscous and perhaps preventing its flow into a mold as an injection molding compound, but similarly will give good anti-sag characteristics to putty, caulking compound, or undercoating. Flotation process is particle hydrophobic surface-based separation technique. To improve the essential flotation steps of collision and attachment, and reduce detachment probabilities between air bubbles and hydrophobic particles, a selectively designed cavitaion venture-tube can be used to generate very high numbers of pico-nano bubbles to flotation column. Fully embraced by those high numbers of tiny bubbles, hydrophobic particles are readily attracting those tiny bubbles to their surfaces. The results of column flotation of Pittsburgh No.8 seam coal are obtained in a 50 cm ID and 162cm height flotation column equipped with static-mixer and cavitation-venture tube, using kerosene as collector and MIBC as frother. Design of experiment procedure combined with statistical two-stepwise analysis method are applied and attempted to made the optimizing the grade and recovery. The effect of independent variables on response has been explained. Combustible material recovery of 85-90% at clean coal product of 10-11 % ash are obtained from feed of 29.6% ash, with reduced amount of frother and collector than that used in conventional column flotation. The column flotation process utilizing the pico-nanobubbles can also be extended to the lower limit and upper limit of particle size ranges for better recovery minus 75 µm and 300-600 µm, respectively.

The shape and particle size distribution of caved ore mass in sublevel caving were investigated in this study. The paper first reviews the main factors affecting the shape and characteristic of caved ore mass in sublevel caving and then through the experimental blast testing with cement-sand concrete models, the shape and particle size distribution of caved ore mass were found out. The experimental results indicated that the shape and particle size distribution of caved ore mass was similar to that of the drawn loose body. This finding presented a new perspective for the future study on the ore drawing theory and on the optimisation of structural parameters of sublevel caving. The structural parameters must meet the principle that the shape of the drawn body is in consistency to the shape of caved ore mass.

The solvent extraction properties exhibited by some /V,N'-tetrasubstituted malonamides to efficiently and selectively recover iron(III) from concentrated chloride leaching solutions can be found in the recent literature. The iron(III) extractive chemistry exhibited by some of these derivatives is revisited, in order to compare their chemistry with that shown by a few of the new malonamide compounds. The generally good extraction efficiency towards Fe(III), from >4 M hydrochloric acid solutions, and the relative ease of Fe(III) stripping by distilled water are remarkable findings that are confirmed for the malonamide derivatives described in this work. Furthermore, additional data regarding their selectivity towards Fe(III) extraction over several base metal ions and their behavior when subjected to successive Fe(III) extraction-stripping tests are also presented and discussed.

The 2006 North American Tunneling (NAT) Conference was held June 10-15, 2006, in Chicago, IL. The biennial conference was the first NAT conference by the newly formed Underground Construction Association of SME (UCA of SME). The UCA of SME was formed earlier this year at the request of members of the American Underground Association (AUA) (ME, April 2006, page 75). The conference included a keynote session, technical programs, workshops, a trade show and social activities. The conference exceeded expectations with 570 attendees. They included engineers, equipment manufacturers, representatives from government agencies and other interested individuals in the underground construction industry. The trade show was also a success with more than 86 booth spaces sold. Vendors included the biggest names in the underground construction and tunneling industry and included equipment manufactures, construction contractors and engineering companies. The trade exhibition provided a forum for interested parties in the tunneling industry to meet and discuss services, equipment and techniques.

Laboratory investigations were conducted to establish the feasibility of bioleaching a mixed copper oxide/sulphide rougher concentrate from Nchanga Mine on the Zambian Copperbelt. The objective was to determine the kinetics and extent of copper extraction for this material. Batch experiments were conducted under different solution conditions in stirred tank bioreactors. The progress of (bio)leaching was monitored through measurements of soluble ferrous and ferric iron, copper, pH, and redox potentials, while bacterial activity was monitored online through 02 and C02 gas utilization rates. About 20 per cent copper was solubilized within 2 hours in all cases of non-oxidative (abiotic), oxidative (abiotic), and bioleaching experiments. This was attributed to the dissolution of mainly copper oxides. Subsequently, bioleaching experiments resulted in an overall copper extraction of 93 per cent, with up to 8 g.L-1 copper after six leaching days, compared to 58 per cent copper extraction in the abiotic oxidative acid leaching experiments. However, there was little effect of time (i.e. poor dissolution kinetics) on copper recovery for abiotic non-oxidative acid leaching of the material. Hence, the rate of sulphide leaching increased due to the activity of bacteria. Thus, the material is potentially bioleachable under mesophilic conditions. However, more exhaustive test work needs to be conducted to establish the effect of bioleaching variables and heat requirement.

As the 2009 president of the Society for Mining, Metallurgy, and Exploration, Inc., I am pleased to present the 2009 issue of Transactions of the Society for Mining, Metallurgy, and Exploration, Vol. 326. A significant portion of the contribution that we as a society make is the publication of professional and technical papers that contribute to the advancement of scientific knowledge and information transfer. Communication within the mining community is the key to a successful society. Through the information-transfer mechanisms of books, magazines, meetings and electronic media, the technology exchange that is fundamental to the existence of the Society is accomplished. This technology exchange continues a tradition that dates back to the 1871 meeting of 22 mining engineers in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, that resulted in the founding of AIME; those individuals envisioned that these transaction volumes “would form a most valuable and greatly needed addition to our professional literature.” This volume certainly satisfies that intent. In keeping with SME’s tradition of promoting technological developments while honoring the past, the 2009 Transactions represents an important milestone. It is the last Transactions to appear as a bound volume. Future volumes will appear as e-books only, with some of the Transactions-only papers appearing online prior to the ebook (exactly what form the new Transactions will take is still in development). The decision to go to an all-digital format for this longstanding publication was a difficult one, but one which we hope will better serve the mining community, especially our international members. This 2009 Transactions of SME, Vol. 326, contains a total of 73 technical papers (510 pages), including all 23 papers (136 pages) that were published in 2009 in the Technical Papers Section of Mining Engineering magazine (Vol. 61) and all 32 papers (232 pages) that were published in 2009 in Minerals & Metallurgical Processing (Vol. 26). In addition, this volume contains 18 papers (142 pages) that are being published for the first time in this issue. The papers presented in this volume were written by some of the most distinguished professionals in the industry worldwide. All 73 technical papers were peer-reviewed and approved. The process of review and publication requires much hard work by authors, reviewers and publications staff. As the 2009 president of SME and on behalf of our members, I would like to extend our gratitude to all whose efforts contributed to the publication of this volume.

A two-dimensional time-dependent analysis of a overburden-coal pillar-weak floor strata interaction problem is presented as a beam model consisting of a composite roof beam resting on multiple elastic foundations (pillars) underlain by a composite rock mass representing immediate floor strata. Several different material models may be considered for the immediate floor strata. The analysis can include all openings and pillars in a panel and permits bed separations in the roof composite beam. The model has enabled identification of the relative significance of different geometric and mechanical behavior parameters which govern the system. The paper presents the theoretical background for the model as well as its application to a mine in Illinois where surface and underground geotechnical observations have been conducted over the last two years.

The world mineral industry has over the years experienced growth in the production of nickel (Ni) due to its use not only in the catalytic industry but mainly also to its demand in the stainless steel production industry. Hence there is a need to produce more pure and marketable grades of Ni through the use of efficient purification routes such as solvent extraction. The V10-LIX®84-IC system resulted in nickel (Ni) extraction isotherm shifting to lower pH levels. The pH window of opportunity for the extraction of Ni subsequently increased in solution containing magnesium (Mg) and calcium (Ca) even though the system also resulted in slight shifts to less positive pH values for Mg and Ca curves. Results showed a synergistic effect of LIX®84-IC when added to V10 for all elements, Ni, Mg and Ca. The pH50 values for elements Ni, Mg and Ca in the V10-LIX®84-IC system were 2.95, 8.10 and 7.70 respectively. Comparing results obtained when using V10 alone produced ?pH50 for Ni, Mg and Ca being 3.35, 0.15 and 0.70 respectively, which was a confirmation of the synergistic shifts for all the elements. The ?pH50 (Mg-Ni)value was 1.95 with no synergism and 5.15 with synergism and that for ?pH50 (Ca-Ni)was 2.10 with no synergism and 4.75 with synergism. This showed that the Ni-Mg separation factor was relatively larger than the Ni-Ca. Improved loading and stripping kinetics were also observed. HERETOFORE, there has been very little study of the effects of various metallurgical factors on the behavior of thermoelectric materials, the need for which is evident if optimum processing and design of thermoelectric devices is to be realized. Accordingly, we have undertaken such an investigation on the thermoelectric materials bismuth and Bi-Sb alloy and in this paper present some preliminary results which merit consideration, in particular the relatively high thermoelectric power and figure of merit values obtained for the Bi-12Sb (at. pct) alloy powder compacts. The thermoelectric parameters for ingot and powder compact specimens are determined and the results are compared with published data for single crystals. Preparation of Materials. The bismuth and antimony used in this investigation are six nines pure. Melting and casting of the ingots was carried out in air for expediency, since most oxidation unavoidably occurs during the preparation of the powder by filing of the ingots. Chill cast ingots of pure bismuth were prepared by pouring the melt into split copper chill molds, and unidirectionally solidified ingots of bismuth and Bi-Sb alloy were obtained by slow directional cooling in pyrex tubes. All melts remained bright during melting and casting, indicating minimum oxidation. Powder for the powder compact samples was obtained by filing the ingots with a fine and coarse file to give a variation in the particle size of the compacts. The flash smelting technology employed in Jinchuan demands a better mineral processing concentrate with an MgO content below 6.5 per cent. Two ways for MgO removal have been investigated in detail based on properties and process mineralogical characteristics of the rich ores in the number one mining area in Jinchuan. The key to the first way is the use of a new flowsheet which has two-stage grinding and separation followed by single-stage regrinding and multi-stage cleaning for the rougher concentrate. The second approach utilises two novel reagents, AT-131 and AT-202, which have been developed recently. Excellent metallurgical performance has been obtained in a commercial test and a batch test, respectively. The MgO content of flotation concentrate can be reduced to about six per cent.

The region of metallic ore deposits in northern Chile, southern Peru, western Bolivia, and northwestern Argentina occurs in arid zones at altitudes as high as 6 km (19,700 ft). Because surface water supplies are meager, new mines require unexploited sources of water. Prolific ground water aquifers occur in salar basins in this region of the Andean Highlands. Exploration water wells have been constructed and aquifer characteristics have been tested in eight salar basins. Results indicate ground water quality is good. Aquifer transmissivity and storage computed from results of pumping tests indicate maximum capacities of more than 170 L/sec (2700 gpm) for individual production water wells. Results of investigations conducted by the authors demonstrate that ground water reservoirs in the Andean Highlands comprise a source of large quantities of water for the mineral industry.

It has been employed by a few mines for years and in the past decade it has been widely adopted, as its advantages have become better known. Because of the extensive commercial development in England and Canada of machines to operate on this principle, general acceptance has been largely in the British possessions and until recently has been chiefly in the field of conventional steel. In the past two years there has been a definite trend toward hot-milling of detachable bits in Canada, but only in the past year has any considerable attempt been made to build special machines for this type of work. Generally a machine designed for conventional steel has been used and special holders employed to manipulate the bit. As early as 1934 at least one operator in the United States had adapted hot-milling to conventional steel with a substantial saving in resharpening costs.1 Several other operators have taken it up but there has been no widespread adoption of the method in this country by users of conventional steel. This may be partly explained by the fact that until recently no American manufacturer produced this equipment and operators have been obliged to build their own hot-millers or import them. Several years ago a few machines were built in Seattle, Washington, and operated in some mines in the northwest, but, for reasons not generally known, the effort was abandoned. The Process Hot-milling performs the function of re-dressing the bit at a forging temperature of about 1650°F., by the removal of metal from the flutes with a milling cutter, followed by a similar cut from the bit gauge. Conventional bits are thus treated following the usual forging operation in a sharpener, and usually in the same heat.
