[This Bureau of Mines report presents results of a survey of underground mining equipment and of two demonstration programs showing the feasibility If quieting; a load-haul-dump (LHD) machine and a personnel vehicle. Typical noise levels are presented for the major machine types used in underground mines, along with estimates of the noise overexposure of miners who operate or work near these machines. General principles of noise control are explained, and the application of these principles is illustrated in the description of modifications made to the LHD machine and the personnel vehicle. The noise control package installed On the persona of vehicle lowered its noise level by 14 dBA after 4 months of operation, and inspection of the LHD machine after 2 1/2 years of operation with the modifications showed its noise level 7 dBA lower than that of the unmodified machine. Noise dosimeter measurements indicated that both machines were in compliance with Federal noise regulations for a typical shift.]

In 1986 and 1987, at the request of the U.S. Bureau of Land Management, U.S. Bureau of Mines personnel studied 7,040 acres of the 7,240-acre Sheep Mountain Wilderness Study Area (OR-006-003) in order to evaluate its identified mineral resources. The area studied is along the divide between the Snake River and Pine Creek about 1.5 mi south of the village of Oxbow in Baker County, OR. No mineral resources or mineral-related activities were identified in the Sheep Mountain study area. The basalt covering most of the study area has no known mineralized sites. However, it contains common agate and opal that is of limited interest to mineral collectors. This basalt (stone) could be used locally as construction material (crushed stone or fill); however, suitable material is wide spread in the region and more accessible to possible markets.

Rio Tinto Minera, S.A. operates in Southern Spain, at one of the most ancient mining sites in the world, using advanced computerised mine planning. This paper describes the development and application of the mine planning systems to the copper and gold/silver operations. It briefly covers the hardware configuration, and the advantages and improvements in mine planning achieved. The system's application started with the long term mine planning of Cerro Colorado (open pit) copper mine and was gradually extended to cater for the medium and short term planning requirements of the other operations of the Company. The base of the system is a mineral inventory established by the combined use of the geology and geostatistical methods, and compatible with the mine planning requirements. The planning system has three major components: one used for open pit design and long term mine planning, another used for blast evaluation and finally one used for short term mine planning. Recently, a fourth component has been added to the system for reconciliation between predicted and actual tonnages and grades. There is common data file transfer throughout the system.

X-ray computed tomography (XCT) is a non-destructive technique that allows the exploration of the internal structure of solid objects in 3D. Over the past ten years, the combination of XCT with more conventional 2D techniques and quantitative 3D image processing and analysis (commonly referred to as digital rocks) has allowed us to address some of the most challenging problems in ore deposit studies. The range of X-ray energies used in XCT allows the X-rays to be transmitted through complex and dense materials including iron ores (eg sinters, lumps, granules). Recent high-resolution XCT scanners have the ability to generate multiscale (25 down to 0.3 µm voxel size) imaging of a given sample enabling the characterisation of 3D textures across a range of scales. This paper will focus on the application of digital rocks to iron ore sinter particles (using filtered polychromatic X-ray beam). The paper is divided into three parts and includes: i) details on the methodologies including their benefits and limitations and the effect of spatial resolution; (ii) the quantification of pore network topology and pore characteristics (eg open versus closed pores, pore size distribution and pore morphologies; degree of connectivity of the pore network and its tortuosity); and (iii) the evaluation of the technique to characterise various phases within the material and quantify 3D mineral textures.CITATION:Godel, B, Ellis, B, O’Dea, D, Honeyands, T and Harvey, T, 2017. Different individuals have calculated the boundary stresses around elliptical openings in an infinite elastic medium for various conditions of loading. With caution, such calculations are useful in indicating stress trends in mining. This paper illustrates an application to caving operations and suggests that abnormal field stress would have an adverse effect. Introduction GELDART and Udd (1), applying elastic theory, confirmed, and set out graphically, the stress distributions on the surface of elliptical openings with axis ratios varying from 1.0 (a circle) to infinity (a crack). The loading conditions varied from uniaxial to hydrostatic, and inclinations for the opening, with respect to the stress axis, varied from 0° to 90°. As most mine openings can be generalized into this elliptical conception, the usefulness of the presentation lies in the fact that given reasonable estimates for the stress ratio, the axis ratio, and its inclination, then the trend in stress concentrations as an opening develops can be readily approximated.

Laboratory-scale experiments were conducted in a mechanically stirred aeration vessel to determine the rusting abilities of aerated water in the presence of various catalysts compared to the industrially used ammonium chloride. The catalysts used were tartaric acid and citric acid, firstly by themselves, and then in later experiments mixed with ammonium chloride. From these experiments it was found that leaching of iron from reduced ilmenite in the presence of either tartaric acid or its sodium salt was much slower than in the presence of ammonium chloride. Citric acid or its sodium salt also give a slower rate of leaching than the ammonium chloride system, but citric acid and its sodium salt mixed in equal proportions produced a rate of leaching approximately twice as fast as the standard ammonium chloride system. When tartaric acid was mixed with ammonium chloride the leaching rate was found to be equivalent to the leaching rate of the same amount of ammonium chloride alone, thus indicating that tartaric acid made no contribution to the leaching in this svstem_

Equilibrium data which should be useful in the design and/or evaluation of glycol dehydration units were prepared from an analysis of various published data and the correlation of these data by the use of the thermo-dynamic equilibrium ratio. The equilibrium ratios of water are used to solve the glycol absorber problem; such solutions are necessary to define the number of trays and the glycol circulation rate needed to meet drying requirements. Activity coefficients were obtained which relate directly to the equilibrium ratios of water in the water-TEG-natural gas system. These activity coefficients have been used to calculate the equilibrium dew points for aqueous TEG concentrations of 60 to 99.9 weight per cent for the temperature range of 40° to 120° F. They also provide a means of calculating equilibrium ratios for water in the water-TEG-natural gas system; this applies to any desired TEG concentration and to the temperature range from 40° to 120°F. INTRODUCTION During the last several years, the drying of natural gas with aqueous triethylene-glycol (TEG) solutions has become very prominent. Most users of TEG as a drying agent have been satisfied with the performance of TEG solutions at the conditions used; however, there always has been some discussion of the drying ability of TEG solutions at conditions not commonly encountered such as temperatures below 50° or 60°F, but more particularly temperatures above 100°F, and pressures above 1,000 psia. Today, when higher wellhead temperatures such as 120°F are more commonly encountered many are skeptical of TEG's ability to dry sufficiently well to provide dew points around 32°F, which is generally the maximum tolerable when attempting to dry a gas to contract specifications of 7 Ib/MMscf. These views probably have evolved to some extent from the days when suppliers would not guarantee dew-point depressions in excess of 65° to 75 °OF. Also, the feelings about TEG drying may have arisen from the lack of information about the equilibrium relation of water in the drying operations. Porter and Reid' have reported equilibrium data for a 95 per cent TEG solution, while Townsend2 reported equilibrium data for 95, 98 and 100 per cent TEG solutions. Townsend also presented a calculational method which obtains activity coefficients in the liquid phase and, subsequently, the equilibrium water content of a saturated gas over glycol from published3 atmospheric dew points. Wise, Puck and Failey' presented activity data for the water-TEG system at atmospheric pressure. In the past, the equilibrium ratios published for water in a 95 per cent by weight aqueous TEG solution have been used indiscriminately by many for all concentrations of TEG encountered in gas drying operations. Since essentially all such gas operations require the use of more concentrated TEG solutions, a study was undertaken to correlate the existing equilibrium data for aqueous TEG and gas systems and to provide some means of calculating the equilibrium ratio of water in the natural gas-water-TEG system where TEG concentrations were other than 95 per cent. The data presented herein consider only the equilibrium drying ability of the TEG solutions and do not consider the effect of temperature and pressure on the tray eficiency of contactors. In other words, this paper is concerned primarily with the development of the equilibrium relationship between water in the dried natural gas and the water in the lean TEG entering the top tray of the absorber. BASIC EQUILIBRIUM RELATIONS A relationship which relates the K value of water in the natural gas-water-TEG system to the vapor pressure of water at the system temperature, the total pressure of the system and the activities of the liquid and gas phases has been evaluated. THE increase in the production of iron has been accompanied by a growing demand for an improved quality, and more especially at the present time, in the manufacture of Bessemer steel, which is rapidly becoming an important branch of industry. This has led the makers of pig iron to a careful investigation of the composition of the materials from which their metal is produced, the inquiry being greatly assisted by a cordial alliance of science and practice. Formerly, chemical science was held in abeyance, or admitted in a hesitating experimental way ; but now it is received as a valuable auxiliary, and its decisions are accepted as final and conclusive. It is called on to assist the iron-maker in determining the quality of his stock, and to detect the presence of injurious elements in his fuel, ores, flux, or iron. The object of this paper is to submit the method now in use at the furnaces of the Kemble Coal and Iron Company in the Broad Top coal and iron region, for removing, by a process of crushing and washing, slate and other impurities from coal, designed, when coked, for furnace fuel. It is not contemplated to claim very advanced progress in this work, believing that it is susceptible of improvement, but to show that some progress has been made in a comparatively new field, and it is hoped in the right direction, since coke is probably destined to become the principal fuel in the metallurgy of iron. The Broad Top coal region occupies an isolated geographical position, standing 25 miles east from the Alleghany field. It is associated with the latter by the structure of its coal, and more closely with the Cumberland field by a similarity in the quality of coal.

The push-pull test, which is a simple injection and pumping sequence of ground water spiked with solutes of interest, is presented as a method of determining the adsorption characteristics of a formation. Adsorption properties are necessary to predict restoration from both in situ coal gasification and in situ uranium extraction. The major problems in applying laboratory measurements to the field concern scaling the effect of particle size, and obtaining representative samples. Laboratory measurements are conducted on gram to kilogram scale samples, whereas the push-pull test evaluates a sample weighing approximately 130 to 1,000 metric tons, depending on volume injected and porosity. The problems in translating laboratory results to the field appear to be less severe for sedimentary uranium bodies than for coal. Laboratory measurements are useful in delineating possible ranges in adsorption properties, and in planning the field experiment. The adsorption properties of a formation are characterized by the cation exchange capacity (C) and the distribution coefficient measured at low concentration, (kd) 'Laboratory procedures for their measurement on coal and uranium ore are reported. Two field push-pull tests were conducted on uranium formations in Wyoming. Adsorption properties estimated from these tests on the basis of a simple cell model were compared to the laboratory values. In the first case, excellent agreement was observed between the values estimated from the field test and the values measured in the laboratory. In the second case, the value for kd determined in the laboratory was 5 times higher than the field value. It is recommended that push-pull tests be conducted on coal formations being considered for in situ gasification in view of the great uncertainty in extrapolating 1aboratory.adsorption properties to the field.

This paper presents an overview of the strategy adopted to bring the Ballymoney opencut lignite deposit to an advanced stage of mine design and confidence. Certain aspects of the project differentiate it from the normal Australian experience. These include the thick overlying glacial drift, the proximity to established infrastructure and the wide fluctua- tions in annual lignite demand. The incorporation of these factors in the mine plan are discussed. The deposit area is located near the town of Ballymoney, in Northern Ireland. In July 1986, after winning an internationally competitive tender, Meekatharra Minerals Ltd commenced an exploration programme designed to delineate reserves to supply a 450 MW power station. In less than eighteen months, a complete evaluation was undertaken and a price submitted in December 1987 to the relevant authorities for the supply of lignite. Subsequently, UK government consultants and significant inter- national banks have endorsed the findings. The mining study commenced with the evaluation of various develop- ment strategies, followed by selection of the most viable mining method and equipment. The equipment selected will mine four million tonnes of lignite and eleven million cubic metres of waste each year. In year 15, the waste removal requirement increases to almost seventeen million cubic metres. This results in an average strip ratio over the mine life of three cubic metres of waste per tonne of lignite. The quality of the product delivered to the run of mine conveyor transfer point, based on maximum resource recovery, will include heat content of 8813 kJ/kg (3789 Btu/Ib), ash content of 28% and moisture content of 40%.

Since mining operations began in 1900, Government geologists and mining men have periodically recorded the presence of the minerals of mercury and antimony in the extensive gold placer deposits near Flat in the Iditarod district of the Yukon River region, Alaska. No serious effort was made to recover the cinnabar contained in the gold placer gravels, and there is no evidence that veins of cinnabar and stibnite exposed in the placer operations (as reported by the Geological Survey) were ever explored or developed. A large monzonitic intrusive, which is the dominant geologic feature of the immediate area, is believed to be the lode source of the valuable minerals in the placer deposits. In contact with the monzonite are argillite and quartzite, metamorphic products from the Cretaceous shales and sandstones.

The Bureau of Mines has investigated techniques and instrumentation that measure accurately the airblast overpressures from surface mine blasting. The results include equivalencies between broadband research instrumentation and commercially available impulse precision sound levels meters measuring: root-mean-square, peak, fast, slow, impulse, A and C weighting, C-weighted sound exposure level (CSEL), and "linear" (flat) response. These values were obtained from field measurements and broadband FM tape recordings of production blasts at area and contour coal mines, limestones quarries, and iron mines. Frequency response was determined for 14 commercial systems.

Infrared spectroscopy, employing the internal reflection method in conjunction with solvent extraction techniques, was used to study surface reactions between aqueous potassium ethyl xanthate and both sphalerite and precipitated zinc sulfide each activated with aqueous copper sulfate. It was determined that reactions occurring on the sphalerite and zinc sulfide surfaces produce the reaction products ethyl dixanthogen and cuprous ethyl xanthate, some of which are ad¬sorbed on the mineral surfaces. According to infrared spectra showing the reaction to form these compounds, the ratio of cuprous ethyl xanthate to ethyl dixanthogen adsorbed is directly related to pH of the flotation solution.

For cyanide, these technologies include leach enhancement processes such as PAL™ and Solidox™, and cyanide detoxification with peroxygen based processes such as SILOX™ and Caro's acid using our DegOX™ technology. Degussa has also made important advances in how sodium cyanide is packaged and shipped with our liquid NaCN plant joint venture with MSI, CYANCO in Winnemucca, Nevada, and our Advantage SLS™ solid to liquid cyanide delivery system. All of these innovative technologies developed to support NaCN in mining, provide value to our customers and show Degussa's commitment to Responsible Care·11.1 and dedication to product stewardship. With Responsible Care and the customer in mind, Degussa has developed Advantage CCS™ cyanide control system, which will soon be available for the North American market. Currently there are several CCS units in service installed by Degussa AG (Germany), and we are in the process of designing the next gen­eration of the CCS which should be completed by late '98. Based on our experience working with gold and silver mines all over the world, there appeared to be an opportunity to further assist our customers by providing a better more automated way to control their cyanide additions. By providing the mine with an accurate method for maintaining their desired cyanide levels in their leach circuits, we could help them avoid underdosing and the associated gold and silver losses, and overdosing the cyanide which not only wastes cyanide but may increase treatment costs as well. In the early 1990's, when we began to introduce our CCS units, there were several cyanide controllers and on-line analyzers avail­able. However, they appeared to be too complicated and not made to stand the harsh conditions inside a mill. This resulted in exces­sive downtime and poor analytical results. We also found that many units would be installed but not commissioned by the sup­plier. Based on these observations, along with filtration and con­trol problems on some existing units, Degussa decided to design its own cyanide control system based on our extensive knowledge of cyanide chemistry, using the best components available worldwide.

Planning for a circular economy allows for previously untapped market opportunities to be explored, resulting in new, innovative revenue generating opportunities, while also reducing environmental impacts. In particular, rare earth elements (REE) are in rising demand as they are key components of over 200 products across a wide range of applications (Xie et al, 2023) including renewable energy technologies. There is a geographical disparity in deposits, with China being the top producer, generating 70 per cent of global production in 2022 (Laboure, 2023). This single dominating source has created supply chain concentration and hence supply risks for other nations, providing a driver for finding alternative sources, such as mine-influenced water (MIW) and tailings. In this study, Isle presents a robust due diligence methodology for undertaking a global horizon scan into REE recovery technology, for a large mining company, from tailings decant water on a specific site. Previous studies of the tailings decant water at this site had shown potentially significant concentrations of both heavy and light REE, but challenges such as high flow, very low pH and high concentrations of iron had previously made recovery unfeasible. Due to these challenges, the horizon scan focused on technologies that had the potential for selective recovery, despite the challenges with water quality, and considered a range of Technology Readiness Levels (TRLs). This included an adsorption-based process that has the potential to selectively separate individual REE, and a polymer based selective flocculation technology.

The introduction of continuous papermaking in the early 1800's was the beginning of the industry as we know it today. Since that time, the majority of the paper produced has employed an acid process. However, in the mid 1960?s, European producers began a transition to an alkaline papermaking process. Early European mill conversions to alkaline papermaking begun in the 601s, accelerated during the 1970's influenced by the dramatically higher cost for OPEC energy as well as the high cost of fiber and imported filler clay.

In the period of 1942-1945, medium-grade, oxidized, lead-silver ore was mined and shipped from the Diamond district near Eureka, Nev. An encouraging tonnage of low-grade ore was developed during these operations and partly blocked-out for future mining. If the low-grade ore could be treated profitably, further development of the district would result, and production of an important strategic metal might be increased. A representative sample of Diamond district ore was obtained through the Reno office of the Mining Division for the studies described in this report. The sample consisted of lumps and fines of a highly altered siliceous rock containing much earthy red hematite and some granular black hematite. Examination with the binocular microscope showed the lead carbonate mineral, cerussite, in seams and disseminated in the hematite. No zinc or silver minerals were identified, and no sulfide minerals were present. Analyses of the ore showed:

The Malana Hydroelectric Project is a private development located in HimachalPradesh State, India that was commissioned in June 2001. The plant was built and is owned by the Malana Power Company, a subsidiary of the Bhilwara Group of New Delhi. With a total head of 400 m and nominal capacity of 86 MW, the plant is capable of generating 360 GWh annually. The 3,1 km long, 4,0 m diameter power tunnel was designed to be excavated by conventional drill and blast methods. Contrary to traditional practice in India for pressure tunnels of providing a concrete lining, the Malana tunnel was finished mainly with shotcrete. In this way, the tunnel was completed in a period of18 months, a record for recent projects in the Himalayas, and at a cost substantially below that of conventionally lined tunnels. An interesting aspect of the project was the design of the steel tunnel liner linking the power tunnel to the penstock. The length of the liner was fixed finally on the basis of in-situ testing using both hydraulic jacking and doorstopper tests to evaluate the ability of the rock to withstand the internal pressure of4,0 MPa that exist near the downstream end of the tunnel.

Pressure tunnel includes water-supply tunnels and tunnels for hydroelectrical power plants. Their design principles are different from those of water/wastewater/conveyance and transportation tunnels. Though theoretical pressure tunnel design guidelines exist, a comprehensive guide to summarize these guidelines to facilitate the planning and design of a pressure tunnel program is lacking. The purpose of this paper is to fulfill this need. It first provides key pressure tunnel design concepts in hard rock environment; then, it illustrates associated final lining design principles, including the design of un-reinforced concrete lining, steel lining, and reinforced concrete lining. Design diagrams and a flowchart for the reinforced concrete lining design are provided.
